I have yet to try the hibachi just because i want sushi when i go to a sushi restaurant. Of all the places in around Providence for Sushi, i will say that Yamato takes the cake with 2 exceptions. Ten is way more expensive, so we'll leave that out. Kon is in East Greenwich, so why bother going all that way when the sushi at Yamato is right up there with quality, creativeness, and execution. Yamato does it right. Their rolls are creative, the prices are little less than what you would expect, and most importantly, the fish:rice ratio of their maki is perfect... not like some other places that give you a mouthful of rice and then a toothpick worth of tuna. Love the inside, very modern and "trendy" when you compare them to some other sushi places who have the same tables and seats as Honk Kong Buffet lol. If you like sushi, don't be fooled by Yamato's location being in a strip mall, you walk inside and they'll take it from there.

Great atmosphere. There is no place like it in Smithfield. The Sushi is great and their lunch and dinner specials are amazing. One of my favorite places to go by far.
(5)Desirae D.
Good sushi. Fair prices the sushi bar guy is almost always the same and he is very nice. Nice presentations and fresh. Just wish it was closer to home.
(5)Joe W.
Agree with other op. Really is a hidden gem. Great sushi, and the chicken and shrimp dinner was awesome.
(5)JLynn C.
Great sushi!! The location is kind of sketchy because its in a strip plaza attached to a laundry mat but don't let that fool you! They have a full bar and a great menu to choose from. I always order sushi because its my favorite but my boyfriend says the steak and shrimp combo is awesome. Only downside is the portions are sorta small and the prices are high. It's a good place to order from here and there.

I'm not a huge fan of hibachi and it was far too early in the day for me to eat sushi. Went here for lunch on Sunday with my best friend as I had to go grocery shopping in the area and she was shopping down the street. We were early enough to get the lunch special which wasn't a bad price. The quality though screamed no effort was put in because its almost 3pm on a Sunday. The soup was bizarre, very oniony, mostly broth, there were a few scallions, a few mushrooms and then pieces of what seemed to be French's Fried onions in the soup. Ok it was hot and nice to get something in my stomach. Then a sad iceberg lettuce salad was plunked down in front of me covered in a mysterious bright orange sauce. Nervous I asked my companion what in the world the bright substance was....ginger dressing. It was actually really good! The meal had the saddest looking fried rice ever, it was simply rice and sauce, no egg, no veggies, no meat. Usually fried rice defaults to at least having onion and pork fat in it. The carrots were literally 2 slices, though they were perfectly soft but not mushy and amazingly seasoned. The Scallops were small, but alright. The sauce wasn't overpowering and they tasted pretty fresh.

Best sushi in ri...get the ichiban or dragon roll. Hibatchi is well worth the price regardless of the meat u get. Highly recommend

Decided to go here after another sushi place we tried was closed for Labor Day Weekend. Yamato is a hibachi/sushi bar without the actual hibachi at your table. Instead it is cooked at a central grill. If you are planning to come for the traditional cooking show this is not the place. Overall the food was good...not great. We ordered an appetizer of spicy tuna roll and white swan roll. The sushi rolls were average size but did not have alot of flavor and the wasabi didn't have the normal kick. I got the Chicken & Shrimp combination dinner. The clear broth soup was good and the salad/dressing was good. The Chicken and the Shrimp was very flavorful with a pleasant sweet taste. The vegetables were also good because they were in the same sauce. The only thing I wasn't a big fan on was the fried rice. Although it was OK it had a bit of an oily taste to it. The best part about Yamato is the price. Normal hibachi dinners run you $18-$25 but the prices are much more reasonable in the $12-$18 range for a dinner. If you want the hibachi style of cooking at a reasonable price this is a good bet.

Today I went for a late lunch to this restaurant. Dinning room was very nicely decorated, clean and hostess sat us immediately. Bathroom was nicely kept and clean. Miso soup was par, salad dressing was tasty, but they put too much of it on. Sashimi/fish wasn't the best or most fresh. The wasabi that they use isn't high quality, it lacks tasted and is extremely muddy. On a side note they do serve liquor and I did notice they have a pretty nice bar. Server was readily available and friendly. I wouldn't recommend the sushi but try the noodles, hibachi or other Japanese dishes.

I usually come here with my bf after work for a late-ish night dinner since its in his area and its quicker than going all the way to ichigo ichie in EP for some hibachi. They close at 10 so I always try to get there by 9 since this is where my 4 as opposed to 5 stars comes into play. I think because its "close to, but not really" approaching closing time, I feel like the servers sort of rush u to finish quickly. She comes to the table WAY too many times to ask how everything is and to try and clear our plates when we're not even finished. I feel like I have to make sure I'm holding my fork over my food or else she'll come running back to ask if I'm all set. Like dude its only 920pm RELAX!!!!! Give me time to enjoy my food and dining experience as opposed to checking on us TOO many times. I always get the hibachi dinners and love it. I know what to expect with the soup and salad and fried rice with meats. I enjoy it a lot and it comes out pretty quickly. Other than the servers being in such a rush to clean up and go home and be overbearing, the food and atmosphere here is very good.

Very good Sushi and Hibachi. Just as good or better than the Hibachi places that put on the table show, but without the table show (And associated waiting and prices). Tho the chef is visible so you can still see the great job he's doing preparing your dinner. Lunch specials are quite reasonable as well.

So here I was on a Friday night no kids, no hubby, what's a girl to do? She's gonna treat herself, that's what! I rolled up to Yamato around 7 and scored a prime parking spot. Today was a good day. (cue music) I'm not one of those people that minds eating alone, so I settle in at the sushi bar. The chefs are pretty quiet, acknowledging my presence with only a nod. The waitress came by and asked about my choice of drink. I asked about the sake selection, and she just kept repeating "warm sake?" and I would say "no, cold, unfiltered sake?" and she just stared at me with a question on her face. "Cold sake?" "Yes." She brought out a cold version of filtered sake, it was not the best. Even the bill didn't list the name of the sake they served me. But, it wasn't completely terrible so I drank it. I don't waste. Now, this isn't my first time at the rodeo, I know sushi bar seats can be like having a dinner show. This isn't one of those kinds of places. I asked what he recommended, and he nodded towards the specials board. Nothing said. Meh. I was kind of bummed because I like to be sold on my meal and I'm willing to tip heavily for great service (years in the industry will do that to you). A lot of places will give you a small tasting or some sort of app for sitting at the sushi bar, but I guess that isn't the practice here either. The special was the Titanic roll; salmon, tuna, white tuna, avocado & tempura crunch inside, with hot sauce drizzle. I am always leery of hot sauce on sushi, like it's a mask for fish that is starting to turn. I sucked it up and ordered one, knowing full well that no matter the outcome, a review was being written. It was a good roll, everything tasted fresh. The hot sauce wasn't from a bottle, it tasted like a house blend, which scored extra points in my book. The plate was pretty, decorated with sauce flowers. Everything tasted ok, and I didn't have any issues. I can't complain. For a sushi joint, it didn't wow me, but I must give credit for having a quality product. One time, my husband ordered the spicy tuna pizza, and that has been the best meal there so far.
(3)Joe C.
Troubling I have been to this spot a few times and I can't find anything that is really good about it. I am trying to read the reviews and some of the Yelp mainstays have it right, but I don't know where others are coming from. Like most Hibachi places they are usually overrated and this place won't change my opinion. 1-10 Rating Food: 5 Drinks: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Bar: 4 Overall this is 2 1/2 star cheesy Hibachi restaurant with average sushi and drinks. The price point is decent, but that's about it. Sorry Yamato

This place was very good and the staff were friendly and wonderfull. I am coming here again for sure.

You can't judge a book by it's cover! With that being said, the appearance of this place from the outside makes you think twice about eating here. If you can look past that you will find the inside to be welcoming but slightly outdated. If you're looking for the hibachi experience of having someone cook at your table, you will be highly disappointed. If you are here, just to eat, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I eat at the bar and always order the hibachi chicken or filet mignon, served with soup and salad. I have been tempted to order the sushi because it looks so good but haven't yet! -someday!

I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars. Yamato is conveniently located on Rt 44 in the Village Plaza, right near Smithfield Commons. Easy access and plenty of parking. The decor inside is very nice...dark woods and tile, nicely lit, whether it's an evening dinner or noon on a summer day. The lunch is exceptional. I got the Bento box and it was just enough food for a nice lunch. Salmon teriyaki, a small salad, a California roll, a spring roll and some rice....perfect. The service is a little stand-offish, but friendly. Tucked away in the corner of the restaurant, Yamato has a nice little fully stocked bar too. Great place to get together with an old friend. Super friendly and attractive bartender who'll make sure you're taken care of. I've tried the hibatchi twice and...to tell ya the truth...I wasnt impressed either time. The chicken and steak were cooked...but lacked the high heat sear and carmelization that gives chicken and beef its flavor. The vegetables were sad and the sauces were awful. The brown sauce was sweet and the pink sauce lacked flavor. Maybe its because I compare all hibatchi to Oki's...I don't know...The brown sauce is supposed to go with the steak and steak is supposed to be salty and savory. Sweetness doesn't jive wit it, homey. Given the fact that the hibatchi isn't cooked at your table, I think they should compensate for that and deliver something exceptional and not sub par. Just my 2 cents. I look forward to exploring deeper into Yamato's sushi menu, but save my hibatchi nights for Oki's.

I've been going here since they opened due to the consistency. I really admire the sushi chef. He has a solid passion to prepare the fish the best way he can. Great chef. Their fish is fresh and very wonderful. Great staff. Very friendly and hard working. A solid 4 stars. Some nights its a 5. Highly recommended in the northwest corner of RI.
(4)Melissa B.
I've been to several Hibachi places. This is the lowest on the list. The soup was bland, but the salad was okay. I asked for bottled water with lemon, they came over with a warped bottle of water. No glass, no lemon. I had the filet and shrimp. The shrimp were delicious, the filet lacked seasoning. The fried rice tasted like white rice - no flavor. Not worth the money here.
(2)H H.
They used to be awesome but it's definitely gone downhill. The meat they get for steak is two levels below choice (choice is what you get at the grocery store), which is why it's so hard to chew. They've overcooked my hibachi chicken the last four times I've been. You don't actually get a hibachi show either. There is only standard seating. My hubby likes it here (he gets chicken yaki udon. It has saffron.) But the last straw for me was when I could smell the sushi bar from across the restaurant. With that said, if you still wanna chance it, the prices are decent and they always make my cocktails strong.

The yellow and red sign outside the restaurant will have you thinkin' it's one of those typical "Asian take-out places." You know. The ones where you call to order, pick up and eat straight from the container while watching a movie rented from the redbox on your way home. But thankfully it's really not. Upon walking in you are welcomed by a check-in counter and a 180 view of the dining area, sushi bar, the hibachi station, and a full bar. The layout is pretty open with dim lighting, contrasting neutrals and dark cushioned furnishings. What I like about the place is that it gives off a low-key relaxing vibe-- something to be appreciated now-a-days since Japanese dining has become more of a nightlife event. I will have to say that they definitely amped up their service since they first opened. It seems like they have changed their team of servers and the new servers are attentive and most importantly: not miserable. The food always is on point. I usually get the sea scallops/shrimp hibachi, chicken katsu bento box, and tempura green tea ice cream w/a side of ginger salad. Winning combos let me tell ya! Their sea scallops and shrimp are huge and cooked perfectly. Their sauces that goes with the hibachi are so delicious that I have no quelms mixing them together on to my fried rice mixture. Sounds gross I know, but try it. The chicken katsu is probably the most Americanized Japanese dish, but the bento box is a solid go to combo for that feeling of "I want sushi, but I don't want sushi." And their fried green tea tempura ice cream.. Mm! Perfection.

Yamato has been my spot for sushi for maybe five years. I've never had a bad experience here, with food or with the staff. They are friendly, the food is good, reasonably priced, and ready quick.
(4)Margaret G.
Finally made our way to Yamato after all this time! My sister and I went for an early lunch and I was very surprised at how good the lunch specials are! You can get hibachi and sushi for very low prices and the food is very good. One of my favorite thing in life is a good sweet potato tempura roll and Yamato does a perfect job. I also got the chicken hibachi lunch special with soup and rice and it was also very good and well seasoned. The setup is very low-key without much flair which is no problem in my book. There is plenty of parking and the staff is friendly. You get little japanese candies with your check which is a cute little touch.
(4)Christine S.
The food and sushi are delicious. There is also an option of hibachi (show cooking) but the tables are not located directly in front of the grill as some places are set up. I always get the bento box which comes with a cali roll and a choice of main dish. The location is in a plaza down from Smithfield crossing so after your meal you can go for some froyo at kiwi burst and do a bit of shopping which is a plus. Very good place to try, only bad points are that the waitresses are a bit lacking in the English department and it is always busy so sometimes you have to wait but this gem is definitely worth a try!

I have tried lunch and dinner at Yamato. I recommend their lunch, especially for take out. Their lunch special is amazing. You can get a few rolls and soup or salad for a great price. Their hibachi lunch is good, but be aware that its a light lunch. Their hibachi in general is delicious, and dinner has a more generous serving. Biggest warning!!! The waitress don't speak good english at all!!! I took my roommate out for dinner as a treat and we ordered 5 rolls and only 3 came out. She said I confirmed that I had only ordered 3 after I said 5. I wasn't upset with the confusion, but I think she took it personally, because she stopped waiting our table. When we got our first 3 rolls, I was shocked because they were made in soybean wrap not seaweed wrap. I HATE soybean wrap. I asked the waitress if she gave us the wrong rolls and she said no. I asked why they had soybean wrapper and she said thats what we ordered. I informed her that its not on the menu, she countered and said that it was, then when we checked the menu, and she realized she was wrong, she said thats how the roll is made. I then asked, if my 2 remaining rolls had soybean wrap or seaweed. After about 5 minutes of back and forth, the waitress who spoke better english explained that they had seaweed. MAKE SURE TO ASK IF YOU ORDER THE SPECIAL ROLLS. Plus, the rolls were not good at all! My roommate and I went back for lunch, and of course they remembered us. When we arrived, the hostess asked us if we were here for lunch. I said yes. I asked her how we would use our $30 Yamato stamp card and she told me I couldn't use it. I was extremely confused. Then told me that I couldn't use the full $30. After going back and forth, she brought a waitress that spoke better english. She explained to us that we couldn't use the full $30 on our order, because it was under $30. I asked her what order she was referring to. She informed me that the pickup order was under $30. I told her that we had not ordered pickup and just arrived for lunch. I couldn't believe the massive confusion. We would have been able to fix the issue earlier on, but we couldn't understand the hostess at all! We both decided to order sushi lunches and hibachi lunches. I had a $30 gift certificate, so we wanted to get our money's worth. We informed our waitress that we were ordered one of each for us and that went RIGHT over her head. We asked her to write it down, because we didn't want another mix up in our order. She only wrote down the sushi orders because she said she remembered the hibachi orders. Thankfully, our food was correct and delicious. I will only go to Yamato for picking up my lunch order. They forgot rice in one of my orders and I was very annoyed, so check your order before you leave. Pickup only, everything else, I'll pass.
(2)Julie D.
Decent sushi and it is fairly inexpensive. The restaurant decor is a little shabby, renovations sometime in the near future would be a good idea. The bartender was very nice and the staff was very accommodating.
(4)Tess W.
Yummy lunch special. I did it again. I just really like the inside of this restaurant. I took my book and had a nice lunch. Quiet in here with good sushi. I had a lunch special of a salmon roll, an unagi roll, and a salad. Hot tea. They charge for hot tea, why? It is .08 cents for a bag and hot water. $7.99 for the special...with tea and tip it came to $15.00. And just a note: The lunch "yelp check-in" discount expired, but it still pops up when you do a check in.

Went on a Friday night and it was packed the entire 2 hours that we were there. The crowd was a mix of couples, families, groups of high schoolers, and general groups of friends. It looks large from the outside, but it's cozy inside. I ordered a combo sushi meal (spicy makki combo that had salmon, tuna and crab). It came with miso soup & salad for $14. A good deal. The sushi was okay. I found bones in my tuna. I wish the miso had mushrooms in it, but it was good. My friend ordered sushi a la carte and seemed content. Our waitstaff were kind and patient, as they needed us to repeat our order a few times. It was strange that they were selling an Oktoberfest beer in mid-December. Overall, okay for sushi. But better Options out there. Note: we didn't have hibachi, but it smelled amazing.
(3)Amy F.
This place is okay. My favorite sushi place closed and i tried here as an alternative but wasnt thrilled. They cut the sushi so big that its hard to fit it all in your mouth. I would never go here on a date because it would be so embarrassing to eat.
(2)Stephen D.
This place is the best sushi place overall..... Yellowtail jalapeño- delicious and refreshing Salmon tartar- the best I've ever had Sashimi- fresh as hell!!!! Hibachi- they may not cook it in front of you but you can't beat the prices compared to other hibachi joints in RI!! Me and my wife come here often and enjoy our meal with a scorpion bowl for two... We love the decor and atmosphere of this restaurant...
(5)Tyler M.
Let me start off by saying this is the cheapest japanese steak house I have ever visited. It cost a total of 40$ for the two of use to dine on steak & chicken combo plates with a scorpion bowl. Now let me highlight what is wrong with this place- In theory, I can see how this place works. A sushi bar in the back, wait-staff is attentive and the prices are good (I also do not usually like hibachi restaurants because you see one you have seen them all and usually have to tip the chief.) The food itself is just not authentic. For example, the fried rice they served was extremely watered down and they did not use oyster sauce. The meat was cooked in butter rather than something more traditional (I'm sorry but since when has Japan used butter in rice and steak?). Maybe they are gearing their food more towards their customer base, that is fine. Again I do not mind there being just one grill in the joint but the food was just a bit off flavor wise. Maybe I will visit again but not on the top of my list and not worth driving to. Next time if every I go back I am ordering the sushi thats for sure.
(3)Jamie H.
I really like it here and I'm not sure why. It's the only hibachi type restaurant in our area and I go ga-ga over their glazed carrots. Get me a side of those and some rolls and I'm golden.
(4)Michael R.
I'm not a sushi fan, but I have been known to be a hibachi fiend from time to time, but I genuinely and surprisingly enjoyed both at Yamato's. The sushi I had is unfortunately not on the normal menu anymore, but if you ask nicely the staff might just oblige you. The Amazing Roll, with spicy crab, mango, avocado, and tuna, was completely awesome -- kudos to Danny, who prepped this killer seafood combo. The filet mignon and chicken with fried rice off the grill was also pretty good too, though the steak was a little on the chewy side. And for the 21+ crowd, try the Scorpion Bowl (or two)! Unfortunately, I live nowhere near Yamato's, but next time I'm in the area, I'll be back for more.
(4)J M.
I went here for the first time recently with my two young children and husband for an early dinner. When we first walked in, I was a little surprised by it being on the smaller size...I also thought the rugs could use a vacuum. From then on, the visit only got better. The staff was very kind and the food good. I tried three maki rolls (sweet potato was my favorite) and my husband had the hibachi grilled steak and chicken. My husband had a Mai Tai that was tasty while I had a glass of wine. I wouldn't recommend this place to someone wanting a hibachi experience but it is a nice touch that you can see the grill station. The food is reasonably priced and yummy. We'll go back.
(4)Mark P.
Reliably good Japanese in RI.
(4)Dani G.
Hibachi restaurants typically enable the diner to watch their meal being prepared right in front of them at their table. This restaurant had a hibachi grill all the way to the far left of the room, to the right of the bar. You can sort of see it as long as you are seated directly in front. We were not and so I had to look between several other diners and around the pole to observe a brief glimpse of a chef in a hat cooking on the grill. Experience lost. The food was ok, the meats were covered in a flavorful sauce with sesame which was good but the dipping sauces were unneccesary. The food resembled more cantonese style rather than Jaoanese hibachi. The rice was just plain rice cooked on the grill with some soy. My meal had two slivers of carrot placed in the rice. No additional vegetables. The miso and the salad were decent.
(2)Lucy L.
Pros: Sweet potato roll was fabulous. My dining partner loved her spicy tuna roll. Cons: The Mai Tai was absurdly strong, to the point where it was painful to drink. It was as if there was rubbing alcohol in it. Service was friendly but extremely inattentive. I had to wave down a server for more water, for a dessert menu, for the check, etc. It was a lot of work just to get basic things. I would go again because the food was pretty good and the prices are reasonable. Just be ready to do a lot of waving.
(2)Olivia U.
I think the only thing worth a damn at this place is the sushi. Here's what I've had: The Sweetheart Roll (Favorite) Crazy Tuna Roll (Really strong and spicy, but amazing nonetheless) Sashimi Platter (I found all of the fish to be fresh and palatable.) Yellow Stone Roll (Mangos and fish? Sold.) Spicy Salmon Roll The wasabi isn't great quality, but in the United States there's a very small chance you're eating anything other than flavored horseradish anyway, so who cares? It tastes good in soy sauce. On another occasion I ordered a bento box with teriyaki salmon. It wasn't very good at all, it tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. Also, the rice that's not in the sushi here always tastes dry. It scores all of its points for being a great local sushi joint. Really polite service as well.
(3)Walter P.
Awesome place for Hibachi style food at a steal!!!!
(5)Reinert A.
Outstanding best presented sushi in Northeastern CT! Excellent hibachi chicken & steak. The sushi chefs are outstanding with their presentation... I have been to numerous sushi joints in CT, Boston, NY, SoCal & Providence... this is the real deal. Highly recommend the "sweetheart roll"or "Godzilla roll". The only con? They need a bigger dining room...
(5)Paul M.
I've been here a few times thus far so the interview is based on a # of experiences. That being said the atmosphere usually depends on who wants to bring their screaming child into the restaurant at 9pm, but that's clearly no fault of the restaurant - it is nice and cozy with very friendly and helpful waitresses/waiters. The drink menu consists of some creative concoctions and although I find the food menu a bit lacking compared to places such as Ichigo Ichi or Haruki's it does stand solid on it's own. Overall if you're in this part of the state Yamato is your best bet for decent japanese food and sushi.
