I love this place! The dining area in the back is so lovely, and the up front diner side has that great feel to it. It's a very reasonably priced breakfast and lunch place. I also love how the servers use iPads for ordering, it ensures accuracy and speed! The food is great for both breakfast and lunch. I often order both sweet and savory dishes together and it's amazing. It's very inexpensive and you get a lot of food for your buck. I just wish they were open later in the day! They close at 3, that's just the diner business I suppose!

We were looking for a place that did pancakes on Sunday morning and we didn't want to wait. We found this nice little diner and sat at the bar. The breakfast menu had a nice selection of omelets, pancakes, waffles and other breakfast favorites. Pancakes were available in smaller portions and the price was great. Service was friendly and efficient. Good place to grab breakfast in Providence.

I got the two two two and the Hungry man Breakfast specials. OMG good! I love this place! They are great! The staff is super friendly. The restaurant is clean and they have a cozy back room that can fit a large group. I really enjoyed their home fries and the bacon! All I can say is Yum Yum Yum! You have to try it!

I'll start off by saying the service is on point. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm, friendly service and our waitress was great. Very friendly, very attentive. The food was pretty average. Nothing to really complain about but nothing to do back flips over. I got the eggs florentine with a side of fruit. The fruit was very fresh but the spinach on the florentine was a little off and the hollandaise sauce was very bland. My boyfriend got the stuffed french toast with strawberries and cream cheese. It was tasty but in his opinion very small. I felt bad because he left a little hungry but he's a man with a huge appetite! All together with two orange juices the bill came to around $19. Not bad. I'd probably come back to try something new.

So the West Side Diner is exactly what you'd expect of a diner (albeit a bit cleaner), and I'm A-OK with that. Nothing about it is absolutely amazing, and none of the items I've tried so far are spectacular, but everything is as delicious as you'd expect it to be. It's a diner. When you want bacon and eggs and home fries and hash and coffee without fancy twists or inflated prices, head here. Oh, and it's actually in a diner car, so they makes the experience even better. A great place to start the morning before heading out on a road trip or hitting the beach. You know, it's like, a diner.

I was dragged into Nick's by my very routine friend and told as usual there was a 1hr wait. I am not a fan of Nick's to begin with as stated by my previous review. I suggested that we go around the corner to the West Side Diner where neither of us had been before. Laid back place. No wait. Old school diner in the front. Clean. Great staff. In the back is a completely different restaurant. Food was good. Great alternative to Nick's.

Little parking was to be had at about 8:50am this Saturday, but that didn't slow the service down at all. As a large party (6) we had to wait for some tables to be moved about. We had our order in by 9:07 and it was out to our table by 9:18. The food was good. The bacon was crispy and the hash browns were crunchy but not overly so. The sausage links were a little under-done in my opinion, but they appeared to be cooked all the way through. They accommodated our large family with young children quite nicely. Will definitely return.

For a neighborhood with great restaurants this is a major disappointment. Have lived here for a number of years and have seen some great restaurants come to our neighborhood, but this, unfortunately, is not one of them. The food is highly mediocre, they do not use local goods (e.g., Rhody Fresh milk, Yacht Club Soda, Narragansett Creamery, Providence Granola, etc.), it takes a while for the food to come out (busy or not), and the hours are totally off (they close in the early afternoon). The developer promised it would be a place that would be open late, too. Let's hope they close up so someone else can take it over.

I love this diner... I really do. When I can't get over to Cindy's in my hometown, I'll be coming here. Hash was delicious.. home made and crisp and salty, but not too much on either counts. This is a real diner car, which is always fun. Don't expect the wait staff to be in that mode though, as tablets are used to take orders---unlike Trident in Boston though (check out that review) they aren't jerks about it. Just expect your waitress to have a couple of neck tats and some piercings. The owners also own other diners in the area, like the Lighthouse in Johnston, and share part of the story of the diner car in the front. All in all, service was great, food was hot, and I'll be back. Don't bring big parties in here though, there isn't room. It's a diner car after all :D

Very disappointed to find discrimination against single people with regard to seating. So you lost not the money a 2nd person would have spent today but all the money this 1 person will spend in the future. Not smart when most of your outdoor, in full sun tables are empty and this guy USUALLY arrives early enough not to inconvenience your discriminatory policy. Fortunately Classic Cafe is a half mile away, has great food, and gladly gave me a table. After a few days to calm down, I realize that I don't want to discourage anyone from going to West Side Diner. Not only is it a good place to eat, it's inside a recently renovated historic diner, which is a great addition to the West Side neighborhood. I still don't like their policy, but I'll continue to go there when it's convenient or when I am part of 2 or more.

A standard stop-by for me. Menu is traditional diner but could be expanded. Considering the neighborhood a more eclectic would be welcomed.

So in keeping up with my retro themed weekend, after a night at Ogie's my roommate and I hauled ourselves down to the West Side Diner. Actual diner car? Check. Super old school charm? Not so check. Its all good though. So we sat for a bit without menus until the waitress must have told the hostess that she spaced out on us and they were quickly brought over. Coffee and coca cola was poured, and an actual steel container of cream was delivered, not little creamer cups. There was a sheet with a handful of specials including red velvet pancakes. I opted for the hash benedict special (more on that later) and my roommate went for hash and eggs. Food came out super quick. The has was definitely homemade which is a 1+ in both our books. My benedicts weren't quite really bennys. They situated the poached eggs on top of the hash and then covered with the obligatory hollindaise sauce, but underneath the hash was my plate, not my sourdough toast or an english muffin. Just as well, I was able to use my toast better having it unearthed than I would have if it was constructed as a typical benedict. The waitstaff used their super slick tablet based ordering with little fuss the morning i was there. I also noted that the diner was plenty warm. Nothing worse than going out to eat and debating if you should keep your coat on the whole time.

I haven't been to the West Side Diner since a few bad experiences in the first couple of weeks (a more-or-less raw pancake on one occasion, and a broken hollandaise on another). Finding myself out of eggs this morning, I ventured over to give it another try. I ordered a Federal Hill omelet, filled with sausage, roasted red peppers, onions, and provolone; it came with an order of home fries and a side of fruit salad. The omelet itself was pretty yummy, if a bit over-stuffed with onions. The home fries were a bit of a disappointment -- most of them didn't have any color on them (maybe they're steamed and then fried?), but there were weirdly a few that were past crispy to burnt. The fruit cup was mostly inedible, crunchy honey dew melon. The prices here are great and the service is fast, and I'm glad to have the beautifully restored building in the neighborhood. I'm sure I'll stop by once in a blue moon for a cheap omelet.

The long wait has ended! My review is going to be relative to the Classic Cafe which is a few blocks away. I'm a big fan of the Classic because it has a very diverse menu, extremely friendly service, it's inexpensive, it's got a great diner vibe and the food is tasty. The work that was done to retain that amazing diner feel and experience was top notch and well worth it. It retains the magic of a legit diner (which it was, and still is.) 5stars The service at the counter couldn't have been friendlier. Service at the table: average at best. 3stars The menu is not very diverse. Both lunch & breakfast... the menu is limited compared to Classic Cafe 2stars The food quality was pretty much what you would expect from a diner. Good but not great. Compared to the Classic it seems subpar 2stars Coffee. Important. Coffee at a diner should make my hair stand on end. The coffee here is no good. Weak. Thin. 1star. It took a little longer than I would expect for my meal to be complete. They've been open for a day and a half so no worries. 3stars Unfortunately, the diner closes in the early afternoon... I was hoping for some late night diner eats! 2stars Location. Phenomenal. 5stars It's a diner folks! It's not great but it has a lot of charm, the food is OK, the service is OK, awesome location and I do want it to succeed. All of the West Side breakfast / brunch joints were hopping on a rainy, dreary Sunday. Why? Because a lot of folks were coming to check out the new Diner and since it was packed (which is awesome) other places absorbed a lot of the overflow. Success breeds success. Keep it going on the West Side. Welcome to the neighborhood!

living in the west end, I heavily support small businesses- especially those that are within walking distance. I was very excited when this diner was opening because I live so close to it. I've been to this diner 4 or 5 times by now and I can't say that I've ever really had an excellent meal or experienced excellent service here. the waitstaff are all EXTREMELY kind and friendly, which is why I feel awful leaving a poor review. every time I've been, my order has been screwed up somehow. my first visit, I ordered a simple omelette and it took an hour and a half to reach my booth. it came up without the vegetables in it that I ordered. the most recent time, I ordered the stuffed French toast with strawberries. there was a very minimal layer of cream cheese and a sort of lopsided, heavy layer of strawberries on it when I got it. my friend ordered a side of white toast with her French toast (which was also pretty dismal) but got wheat toast instead. we told our waitress that the toast was wrong and while she was honestly very kind, she snatched the white toast off of her plate with her bare hands (with which she had just been counting money, ew). I ordered a breakfast burrito to bring home. when I went to eat it later, it was basically a cheese omelette wrapped in a tortilla. no vegetables or anything else that was supposed to come with it. looking at all of these positive reviews, I feel like maybe I keep catching them on off days. but after going there so many times and experiencing the same type of service, I can't see myself going back unless nothing else is open.

UPDATE March 2015: Just went for a weekend brunch for the first time -- only to discover that they only serve breakfast! Annoying, but I still love the place. UPDATE March 2014: The West Side Diner now serves breakfast all day (had one yesterday, and it was outstanding -- superb, fresh eggs and crispy-soft hash browns) and they've added some lunch specials. The service has improved as well! When I wrote the review below, I gave it three stars, but I'm upgrading that to four! I love a diner. I especially love a genuine old-school diner with a railcar design and lots of decorative stainless inside and out. On these points, the West Side Diner scores a 10 out of 10, and it's just great to have a place like this within a short walk of my home. As to the food, though, the West Side Diner doesn't really shine as much as the metal. Breakfast is good, with fresh eggs properly done to order and above-average hash browns. Lunch is just so-so, with a fairly limited offering of typical diner fare, all of which (so far as I've sampled it) is ok but nothing to write home about. It's frustrating that they stop serving breakfast at 11:30 -- my idea of a diner offers breakfast all day every day -- and too bad they don't have late night hours as well, which could bring in a whole new crowd. The waitstaff is friendly but a little slow on the order -- the coffee cups are rather small and the refills few and far between; it may be that using iPads instead of paper and a pad is not the best application of new tech to classic food. All in all, I like this place and I wish the new owners well; I'm sure I'll be back for breakfast pretty often, but when it comes to lunch I'm not quite sold. I hope they'll stay and expand their offerings and hours!!

I have no complaints about the food whatsoever. My issues with this establishment revolve around the service and the atmosphere. The servers were very friendly, but were obviously new to the food service industry. They were slow to refill coffee on a slow day, and felt slightly disorganized. My biggest issue with the wait staff was the use of tablets instead of a pen and paper. I witnessed two waitresses talking orders while hunting and pecking at their 7" screens. The ordering process was much slower and made the experience significantly less personable. Lastly, the diner lacked any character and charm. Completely devoid of personally. Sterile and stainless. So if you want decent food at a decent price, please come to west side diner. Just don't expect much more than that.
(3)Jackie B.
We come here frequently for late breakfasts, always delicious, always fast. It's cheap and the specials are always yummy combinations. Have not had lunch here though, someday maybe we will have lunch but it's hard because the breakfast is so good!
(5)Peter C.
It's gotten a lot better. I still wish they were open later and haven't yet tried lunch, but for simple, tasty breakfast food it's great.
(4)Melissa M.
The food is good, the staff is friendly, and it's very affordable. It's nice to have a cheap breakfast place to go to on the Westside considering if you want to go to all of the upscale brunch places you have to pay a fortune. They have outside seating which is nice during the summer. I wish they were open at night but I understand it might attract a bad after bar crowd. Womp womp

My wife and I made our first visit to the Wes Side Diner today, and we'll definitely be back! We made our way from the front of the classically designed Diner experience to the backroom. The front of the diner was classic, and reminded me of other local diners that have dotted the New England landscape for decades. The backroom was airy, and beautifully decorated. We loved the local artwork hanging on the walls. Now let's get to the food. My wife can never pass up eggs Benedict, or anything with a hollandaise sauce. She absolutely loved her dish. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was "just right". She couldn't stop talking about the home fries, and kept saying how awesome they were. I had a basic French toast that was airy, and exactly what I was looking for on an early Sunday morning. The waitstaff was attentive, brought coffee quickly, and offered a refill whenever our cups were approaching empty. We can't wait to visit the West Side Diner again!

Had an amazing breakfast today. Some of the best corned beef hash I have ever had. Eggs Benny were on point and great home fries definitely the best priced breakfast on the west side by far and beyond worth every penny . I will be back fo sho

I live in the neighborhood and have been waiting for this place to open for the better part of a year. My hope was that it would be good, fast and open early - like a diner should be - so that it would alleviate some of the morning congestion at Nick's and Julians and provide a viable alternative. Well, it IS open early and I took my friend over there this morning as a treat for her birthday. We walked in and were quickly told by the waitress that we could sit anywhere we wanted, so we chose a booth along the front of the diner. The table had yet to be cleared from the previous patrons. Five minutes later the waitress who spoke to us at the door swung by and grabbed a couple plates but left glasses and cups and food still spilled on the table from the previous patrons. Five minutes after that a couple of older men walked in and sat at the bar. They were given coffee and menus almost immediately by the woman who was ostensibly our waitress. At this point we had been there ten minutes and had no menus, a dirty table with dirty dishes and no offer of coffee or anything else. My friend asked if I wanted to leave and go somewhere else. I said we should give it five more minutes. Five more minutes passed - now fifteen minutes since we walked in - and still no attention from any waitstaff. The two older gentlemen at the bar who came in after us had now ordered food. I asked my friend what she wanted to do and she said that we should give it five more minutes. Five more minutes passed with no change in service for us. Twenty minutes after sitting down in a diner that wasn't particularly busy at the time our table still hadn't been bused or cleaned, we hadn't been given menus, offered coffee or even been spoken to by any of the waitstaff. I told my friend that it had been twenty minutes and she said "Let's just go." So we left and got breakfast somewhere else. It appeared to me that none of the other booths were getting any service from the waitstaff. I don't know if this place is just understaffed or poorly staffed, but with half a dozen booths and a counter in the front of the diner it shouldn't be difficult to ensure that everyone gets prompt service - much less any service at all. I can't provide any insight about the food other than to say that it was hard to come by. The interior looks like a classic old diner, but clean and relatively spacious. I also really enjoyed that there wasn't any music playing. I don't know why places like Nick's and Julian's feel the need to blast music when it is already too loud from the standing room only crowd - it just makes people talk louder and increases the unpleasant din. I hope that West Side Diner keeps it music free in the future. Yes, I will give this place a try again. Maybe some morning at 6am before work. I may wait to hear that they have increased their staffing and sped up the overall experience, but I will be back. Until then, it was a disappointing and hopefully anomalous experience.

I stumbled upon this place by accident while on my way to kitchen. Since they were full up, I drove back to the West Side Diner. This dining car had been parked here for years, I wasn't aware someone finally renovated it and opened it. And what a renovation it is! The place is gleaming, it looks brand new. I was very impressed. The diner is fairly wide and open, and they've added a large dining room to the back, with a bar. It's pretty stylish, and with its 1970s large patterned wallpaper that's come back into fashion, it manages to be both a little retro, as befits a diner, and thoroughly modern at the same time. Five stars for the renovation and general cleanliness. We went for breakfast, and ordered stuff that would be pretty hard to screw up, to be honest. I had the western omelette bagel sandwich ($5.99, I think) and a side of home fris and my husband had the hash and eggs ($7.99?). It was all good, but honestly, it would also be hard to screw that up! I tend to judge breakfast joints by the homefries, because an egg is an egg is an egg. And the verdict there is ok, but not exceptional. Could be a little more seasoned, or have added onions or peppers. Service was on the slow side, but it was the kitchen and not the service; Since the cook would walk the plates back to the waitress in the back room, I know we got our food as quickly as the waitress could get it to us. Nothing I can't forgive for a newly opened restaurant but if it had been five minutes more or a few months from now, I might have started getting aggravated. Our waitress was nice though. I'm torn between rating it a 3 or a 4. Truthfully, maybe it just deserves a three, as it seems like an average place to go for breakfast, but I feel generous because it's great to see another restaurant in this neighborhood, especially one that's sparkling clean, spacious inside and actually has off-street parking! P.S. Someone below complained that they wouldn't serve breakfast after 11 am. I don't know if that was a weekday but I can verify that on a Sunday, they serve breakfast after 11.

This place is new so I'm hoping it gets better! I will give it another chance in a month or two and if it happens - I will change my review. It was pretty bad so it's going to be tough to make that second trip into this diner. The food was not great and the service was lacking. I specifically said I don't want runny eggs so I got over medium. My eggs were runny, bacon was rubbery, home fries lacked any pizazz, and the toast was nothing short of thinly sliced sandwich bread. Closing at 2pm on Sunday and stopping breakfast at 11am shows how little they know about the demographic of the west side. The standard are pretty high here! We have a lot of great places to choose from so if the West Side Diner wants to stick around they better hire professional staff and look into the demographic - asap!
(2)Amanda G.
Well, the second time was better. The service improved 100%. The food... eh. My eggs were way undercooked and not hot. Coffee mediocre. We got a coffee bun, which is a square cinnamon roll. It is not made there and the waitress couldn't tell me where it came from when asked. Dry and flavorless; not worth the $$ or calories.
(3)Richard P.
I'm an out-of-towner with family members in the neighborhood. Had breakfast shortly after the recent opening-- best. corned. beef. hash. ever. Not a canned paste that's pan fried but has real pieces of shredded corned beef in it. The eggs seemed very fresh and they have orange marmalade on the table and Frank's Red Hot available, 3 of the top 10 on my checklist. Recently had cheeseburgers to go. One would have satisfied both my wife and I but I got 2, complete with fries. Could barely finish one of them but I did and felt pleasantly guilty all day. Not sure if the charcoal flavor is real or applied but I don't care--tasted like an outdoor grilled burger in DECEMBER! Wanted to get breakfast on New Year's Day but got up too late and had to head home. Will return again and again as time permits.
(5)Arthur S.
Excellent breakfast, I got the Tex Mex burrito and it was top notch. The restaurant was very clean and neat also bathroom is spotless. I would definitely recommend.
(5)Adam B.
To (hopefully) resolve some confusion: They serve breakfast (only) all day (well, all the hours they're open) on Saturday and Sunday, but only until 11:30 during the week. It's a beautiful place, nicely restored and bigger than it looks from the street. The counter seems to go on forever. It was also nearly empty around 12:30 on a Saturday; there were five waitstaff there who didn't have much to do. My experience was great overall--I was greeted the moment I walked in the door and handed a menu and a cup of coffee shortly after I found a seat at the counter. My Blueberry Crunch Pancakes (a special) came quickly and were, well blueberry pancakes--it's hard to mess those up, but the pat of softened butter and sprinkle of powdered sugar on top were a nice touch. The total was about 11 bucks for a stack of pancakes, a bottomless cup of pumpkin spice coffee, and a glass of orange juice, about what I'd expect from any diner in Rhode Island. It hasn't quite displaced the Modern as my favorite breakfast spot in the Providence area, but it looks like you can get in without a wait, and variety's good.
(4)Wayne P.
breakfast today at the West Side Diner. nice place. the old diner section reminded me of the old silver top diner. the menu said in house corned beef hash. so i had to try it and it was indeed NOT canned, good stuff and a generous portion. my wife had the veggie omelet. it does not come with cheese which makes it light and tasty.previous reviewers mentioned problems with service. we found none of that. so i believe they have ironed out most of the problems. can't wait till our next visit.
(4)Neil C.
Outstanding waitstaff, nice decor and atmosphere. Classic breakfast selection for a menu. Our food was fresh, hot and very good. Definitely will return.
(4)Pete S.
Arrived here by accident thinking we were on our way to a different place, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Clean place, very friendly staff, very good food. Will definitely return (intentionally this time).

At long last. The doors have opened. They make a damn good hash. The wait for the renovation was worth it - the ambiance is just awesome! Love the careful tiling and wall color in the back room. But overall... even considering first day jitters... it just wasn't awesome on the food or service front. In fact, my meal was less than awesome - a run of the mill dry burger. I rushed over to meet a friend and got to try a bite of her hash before ordering. But by that time, it was already past 11 and breakfast was no longer being served. What? It's a diner! Breakfast should be served all day! Ordered the "Black and Blue" burger... getting giddy to taste those scrumptious blue cheese crumbles. Was epically disappointed when a side of blue cheese salad dressing arrived. I expected something different. More creative menu? Rumors of serving dinner and alc late night? But it's definitely straightforward diner fare for breakfast and lunch. I've never tried any of the owners' other restaurants, but it's the same guys who run Amanda's in Pawtucket, Lighthouse in Johnston, and Sea Plane Diner in Providence. Seafood served only on Fridays. Homemade pie, baked beans, and corned beef hash. Few parking spots available in the private lot, but plenty of street parking. Local art for sale provided by Small Circle on Wickenden. Call ahead to order takeout!
(3)Amanda E.
De-lish! Me and my boyfriend went here twice each time I visited him at his school (Johnson & Wales). The first time we went, we saw that they had specials like S'mores waffles and pumpkin pancakes but we didn't get them; Instead, we got an omelet each. Mine was a veggie egg white omelet and it was great. The service was good too, we were forgotten about, but that was alright we weren't really in a rush. The second time, the place was packed and it was pouring outside. We asked about the s'mores waffles, but they didn't have it anymore. Instead we got the pumpkin pancakes and they were delicious!! Definitely recommend trying their pancakes and their specials. Very nice place.

Finally, a diner that has retro charm but meets modern realities. It's not freezing cold in there like old diners usually are, and most importantly, they take credit cards. Eating in the front room in the morning means you get all of the pretty morning sun. It really helps you feel connected to the neighborhood. Parking situation is a little weird - there is a tiny lot but you can also just park on the street in front. Our food came out fast, piping hot, and of course delicious, especially the house made corned beef hash! A not-so-happy family came in at 9am and then yelled at the waitress because someone in their party was allergic to eggs, and when they were informed that only the breakfast menu was available, they demanded "What is she supposed to order then???" I had to refrain from turning around and deadpanning: "bagel, oatmeal, fruit, toast, yogurt, or even homefries, bacon, sausage... bitchface." The waitress and cook said they'd be happy to make a burger but no fries since the fryelator wasn't warmed up yet and lunch prep wasn't ready. They left without ordering but I was impressed that the employees were polite the entire time.
(4)Lyd M.
Hash and eggs were delish! Typical menu but everything came out nicely plated...my brother's Belgian waffle with whipped cream and berries looked awesome. Coffee was never empty, service was great, space was cute and clean, easy parking...I'll definitely be back! Oh, and the corner booth was wicked comfy!!
(4)Tyler B.
We walked in at 1:55, unknown to us they close at 2:00. I get it, I've worked in the restaurant business, I know the feeling when someone walks in just as you're about to close but to have your first words be "we're closing in 2 minutes, hurry up and order (then just stand there)" is totally unprofessional. We had never been, we were unfamiliar with the menu, and wanted to look over the menu. I can promise you you were not leaving at 2:05, you need to cash out, count your tips, clean, restock etc. that all could have been done while we were eating. I would have preferred to been told they were closed then say "hurry up were closing in 2 minutes," and again, just stood at the table waiting for us to order. Get me a coffee, get me a water and then I'll order. I'll give it another shot, and will be sure to arrive earlier, but that's rude and very unprofessional.

5 star diner all the way! My boyfriend and I came across this great spot last weekend. We were incredibly hungover and craving down home, old school diner food. Not only did we not have to wait(on a Sunday morning)..the entire statf was very friendly. Tina was our waitress at the bar and was beyond awesome! The food came out super fast and our coffees were constantly topped off. Definitely recommend eating here!
(5)Andrew L.
Great neighborhood diner. The menu has typical diner fare, along with some inventive pancake and waffle specials. The scrambled eggs were very good and made from real eggs, the bacon was crispy and the toast was good quality bread. The prices are very reasonable and the service is prompt and attentive. I only wish they were open until later in the day because I'd definitely go there for dinner.
(5)Jessica S.
With diners being a regular thing in NE it's not often you come across one with such sparkle. Westside is not only a great diner but it's also a wonderful restaurant. The menus is fresh and extensive. Everything is thoughtful and delicious.
(5)Kevin H.
Great spot clean with old diner style. Plenty counter seats and back room. Outdoor tables with umbrellas and lunch menu as well.
(5)Toby H.
You get the feeling that the staff are really trying hard to make this place work but they seem to have not quite perfected their formula yet. In time when they work out the kinks I am confident this place will get much stronger reviews as their food and pricing are both rather good. Until then expect a few bumps during your dining experience i.e. items missing off order, coffee left empty too long - nothing huge but it needs to be fixed.
(3)Nicole W.
I've been here a couple a times and the food is just OK. If you can cook at home, then you can cook the food offered here with the same (or maybe better) level of quality. Nothing really stands out or wows. In my opinion, the whole reason to come here is because you've woken up and have zero ambition to cook your food and want something fast, hot, and cheap. The service is friendly and, like I mentioned, quick. The wait time is minimal between ordering and getting your food out and the price is cheap. It's a greasy spoon without that "greasy" charm because the diner is not-so-recently opened and still shiny from all the time it spent slowly being refurbished.

Not sure if it's growing pains, but this was pretty disappointing. I think most of us on the West Side have been staring at this diner's shining silver exterior and waiting on bated, drooling breath for it to open. Unless you want to walk twenty minutes to Julian's or Nick's and then wait an additional hour and change, the breakfast options past Westminster aren't that great. So after we gave a couple of weeks for them to get their act together (every new restaurant has some initial issues), we meandered on over for a Sunday breakfast. The prices were exactly what you'd expect of a diner - cheap, most options under ten bucks, endless coffee. But after that, things got a little wacky. All of their service is done via tablets instead of written tickets, which for a diner, is advanced tech that's probably not required and might even complicate things more than necessary. When I asked for a half-order of eggs benedict (which I think is a fairly average request), the waitress puzzled over it for a solid ten minutes, recruited the help of her coworkers, and eventually wrote my order on a napkin. My manshape ordered their breakfast burrito-type-thing and we decided to split an order of corned beef hash as avid hash junkies. Maybe it's just me, but I tend to judge a breakfast joint by their eggs benedict -- and this one just didn't make the cut. The hollandaise was thick to the point of congealing and tasted like someone took a Lipton soup packet and mixed it with some butter -- really salty, really -- stocky-tasting? I can't even describe it. I don't think it was made from scratch. On top of that, they screwed up my half-order that they worked so hard to put in -- instead of one egg and one English muffin, they gave me one egg and two English muffins. It was kind of sad to look at. The corned beef hash was okay, and the homefries were bangin'. Maybe this place just needs time to get its act together. Maybe I shouldn't judge a book by its hollandaise cover. In either case, you might be better off taking the walk down the road to Corner Cafe and getting better food with better portions for the same price.

New fave breakfast spot! Fun diner, super clean, awesome service and great food. Lots of choices, I like that I can get an egg white omelet, and you can get fruit instead of hashbrowns/homefries. We liked this place so much we went two days in a row. Hoping this becomes our new weekend breakfast place.
(4)Adrianna B.
Exactly what you'd expect for a neighborhood diner! Great food, friendly service and reasonably priced. French toast was awesome
(5)Sarah S.
I love that it's an old diner car. There's also outdoor seating which is nice. The food was fine but nothing special, we ate here once and then reverted back to classic cafe for our usual weekend brunch spot.
(3)Mike P.
Definitely 5 star service. Kendra was the best waitress I've encountered in a long time. Now, on to the restaurant. The front of the restaurant is standard 50s diner, but the back dining room is a unique, modern VIP room. Very well-designed and pleasing to the eye. The food? It comes out quick and piping hot. Generous portions and quite good. I think the home fries are a bit bland, but good. They need something. Also they need to expand the menu a bit more. Overall? 5 stars.

Whoah... this place was great! I had been anxiously waiting for this place to open, as well as giving it some time to iron out any newly opened restaurant issues. I must have either hit it right or this place is now just consistently awesome. I'm thinking it is the second option. The atmosphere is top notch. We opted for the open and large, beautifully decorated back dining area that was a bit quieter than the front diner car. Even though feeling seemingly far from the action, the service was prompt, attentive and genuinely down to earth. Our server, Rachel, was so personable! Oh my gosh, the food! I had the hash & eggs (yuuuum so flavorful) with hash browns (hard to find these and so perfectly cooked) and opted for turkey bacon (nice option!) instead of toast. My companion got the Belgian Waffle with granola and the side of sausage. After hearing his almost weekly woes of wanting waffles and never being able to find them (never mind perfect ones) we are so relieved!! Yay yummy waffles in Providence! A++ combinations and presentations on both plates. Great portions, perfect pricing for what you get AND I didn't feel like hell afterwards. Fresh food, definitely not your greasy spoon!
(5)John H.
Great breakfast! Fast and friendly and the money I saved I passed along in the tip. Great portions size for the price. Oh' yeah I'll be back.
(5)Boris S.
First time trying it and I'm really digging it. Reasonably priced, food is really good. Staff is attentive and courteous.
(5)Orlando R.
When it comes to friendly service, amazing breakfast food, and all around good atmosphere, I'm all about that diner life, and this diner makes the cut. Providence can be a bit hectic but don't let the location steer you away from this little gem because when it comes to food, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Definitely well worth it! This place is very clean and I was very impressed. I recommend the Federal Hill omelette (Italian sausage, red peppers, sauteed onions and provologne cheese) and if they have them, the cheesecake Belgian waffles because Oh. My. God. No words do those bad boys justice. The cheesecake is INSIDE the waffle and it's just...amazing. Truly the holy grail of waffles, really. If you're ever in the area I recommend stopping here for your belly busting satisfaction. You won't regret it!
(5)Leonard D.
First time here. Took my two kids here. It was a nice morning so we sat outside. This classic diner is very nostalgic and cool inside. Super friendly and attentive staff. They were great. Sitting outside you can be forgotten about. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us often. Breakfast was very delicious. I had the crab cake bennies. Perfectly cooked poached eggs. My son had the S'mores waffle that was awesome..( I finished it for him lol ). Overall I was very content with the food and service very recommended...check it out.
(4)Michael V.
Ive been here a few times already. The long and short is that its REALLY OVERPRICED diner food. Dont do it! There are ao many other better places to check out
(2)George M.
Ordered a giant to-go order last weekend for friends who were visiting from out of town. The order was 100% accurate and delicious! Will definitely return for more!
(5)Shannon M.
A friend of mine and I arrived to West Side diner to a short line. The hostess promised that to have indoor seating, we would have to wait 10 minutes - tops. The promise was delivered. Within 5 minutes, we were happily seated in a booth and ordering up coffees. One of the specials that morning was the Portuguese Sausage Hash. I ordered that. My friend ordered the Lenguica Omelette with a side of extra lenguica. We also ordered a Cookie Dough Belgian Waffle to share. I was fiending for some breakfast, so when the arrived, I kid you not when I say that I scarfed my breakfast down in about 5 minutes. My Portuguese Sausage Hash was nothing short of amazing. It came with two eggs any style - I chose them over easy. The yolk ran into my side of home fries and Portuguese Sausage Hash. The meal overall was so delightful. My friend loved his Lenguica Omelette. He let me try a link of lenguica. I've never had that before and if you haven't, you should. It's got a pretty distinct flavor. Looks like a red sausage, and its taste is on the sweeter, garlicky side with a touch of Paprika. We were both pretty full by the time we touched the cookie dough waffle, so it was a slight struggle. It was hard to stop eating the waffle though, because it was so damn good. The cookie dough bits are harmoniously baked right into the waffle with butter on top that melted right into it. Overall, the wait was short, the service was great, and the food was freaking delightful. What more could you want? If you're in Providence for a night, wake up the next morning and get breakfast here.
(4)Brian S.
A great diner in Providence. It was very close to the Airbnb we stayed in during our trip to RI, and we decided to check it out. We were a group of four friends. As diners go, West Side Diner is pretty much as you'd expect, in terms of menu options and price. However, that is certainly not a negative point, especially when one considers the fast service, friendly staff, and excellent food. There was also a specials menu separate to the main menu, so lack of choice was not an issue. Staff were always quick to refill coffee and make sure we were okay. Great diner in Providence, worth checking out.
(4)Melanie R.
This is my first time in Providence. We went to two other restaurants in the area looking for breakfast and they each had an hour wait. We walked into Westside Diner and everyone was so nice and accommodating. We ordered the Portuguese French toast, two hungry man breakfasts, one chicken fajita omelette and the vegetable omelette. The pancakes here are amazing! All of the food was so delicious. Definitely order a side of pancakes and bacon. The service here is great and the food came really fast! Our waitress, Kendra, was so sweet! We'll definitely be coming back here the next time we visit :)
(5)Eliezer E.
This place is awesome !!!! The stuffed French toast is definitely a must have... The service is great
(4)Maria C.
I've been here with different groups of friends and we've never been disappointed! It has the cute retro look outside and inside (It's an actual diner car). But wait! Head through what looks like the kitchen door and you'll be seated in a room with a different more contemporary scenery. The walls display local artwork that's cool to admire while you wait for the food! And if it's beautiful out, you have the option of outdoor seating (this is just an ok area, aesthetically). As for the food, it never misses a beat on deliciousness. I keep intending to try the lunch menu but can't pass up on breakfast foods. I've been to places that can be hit or miss with breakfast, not this one! Waffles, pancakes, and French toast are all worthy! I also keep coming back for the spectacular service, especially if you get Kendra.
(5)P C.
Food and service is very good and consistent! Keep it up!
(4)Joe W.
We stopped at West Side Diner early Saturday morning. Our first time in the diner. The staff was exceptionally friendly and we immediately felt welcome. The Federal omelet was excellent and more than enough food. Coffee was always a full cup. A classic diner setting and very clean. We felt like a regular by the time we left. We will have to find more reasons to go to Providence for breakfast!
(5)Jim T.
I had breakfast here and was pleased with the food, service, and price. Very cool old diner restored to it's original glory. Will be back next time I'm in the neighborhood
(4)Sara F.
We found a new breakfast spot and can't get enough! We love going to West Side diner with the family. My favorite is the corned beef hash. The service is good and meals are ready fast. It's a charming neighborhood diner and close to where I live. I recommend it. My husband looks forward to the weekends just to go to West Side Diner.
(4)John A.
Stopped by West Side Diner for breakfast per Yelp reviews & I'm a fan of breakfast places. Liked it. Menu was interesting with some "not everyday, not everywhere" type items. Their hash is home made which is always tempting for me so I had hash & eggs with hash browns (yes they have hash browns) & a single strawberry pancake (strawberries inside not on top). Very tasty. Hash in particular, but hash browns & pancake very decent as well. Most happy I found it. It is a classic "diner" type style with parking on the side. It you like breakfast places it is worth checking out. They do lunch too - sorry to omit that.

I am also happy to report my experience at West Side Diner was awesome! Hubby and I came here twice in a week for brunch to really test out the food/service and support the business in our neighborhood. Food, staff, service, atmosphere are all great. Food: We had the following dishes during our 2 visits. 1. Corned beef hash and 2 eggs: The corned beef and potatoes were in the right proportion. It was not too salty and the potatoes were also cooked just right (got a real good bite but not soggy). 2. Pumpkin Pancakes (Special): OH MY WORD. GET IT. Always ask for their specials because I almost accidentally bypassed it. They used real pumpkin and wonderfully folded it into the pancake mix. The pancakes were fluffy and were perfectly flavored with no syrup needed (That's when you know you got some insane pancakes when you don't need syrup!) 3. Tofu Scramble: Light and tasty. It was slightly on the salty side but when you want to eat and feel healthy, order it! They are vegetarian friendly here. 4. Classic Eggs Benedict: Poached eggs with generous slices of bacon (more like a slab!) on English muffins. They were SO tasty and not overpowered by the hollandaise sauce. I had hash brown as my side and they were just slightly over seasoned. But nothing damaging at all. Staff: Extremely friendly. Greeted right away when we entered the front door (facing Westminster Street). Our water glass was full the whole time. Staff checked on us periodically. We felt cared for and had a pleasant time dining there. Decor: This restaurant actually has 2 seating areas. The front part which is the diner - exactly what you would see and expect from a diner. But they also have a backroom which has a separate coffee bar and restaurant style tables and chairs. They have various artwork on the wall (they are for sale) to support local artists. While the backroom appears to be out of place, I actually appreciate it a lot because it is great for larger groups and families with kids. They did an awesome job in decoration. Clean, chic and very artsy! I am delighted to know this place is finally open with good food and service. While my heart will always go out to Nick's on Broadway, this diner has lived up to its expectation and is now on my go-to place for casual breakfast/brunch without paying the price of Nick's. P.S. They take all credit cards. Also, they are so tech savvy that they use iPads minis to take your orders! Very cool :)

In my exploration for more diner joints in Providence, I came across the newer, hipper cousin of Amanda's Kitchen in the West Side of town. First and foremost, the place is new but still pretty cozy. When I saw the menu, it was a little comforting to see some of the more familiar menu items (especially in the omelettes section). The selections are pretty standard - omelettes, sandwiches, pancakes, and waffles. For me, it was the little things that made a difference for me: - Their corned beef hash was truly made from scratch and it was delicious. - Options for potatoes are a nice change - I went with the home fries, which were all nice and toasty. - My coffee mug was never empty. While Amanda's is still my staple (literally walking distance from my place), the West Side Diner is a good option for when I want something a little different.

This place is excellent. The revival of this old timer diner is not only a blast from the past but further underscores the revival the West End has been experiencing the last 5 years. At the West End Diner you can expect excellent, friendly service, great coffee and wonderful Diner style food. I prefer the Eggs Benedict or the Breakfast Burrito. The booths in the front can be a little cramped but the back half of the building is new and gets tons of natural light. Parking can be a challenge but if you don't mind a quick walk you'll have no problems. In short, this is definitely a place you should check out for a nice weekend brunch.

The West Side Diner was something of a legend before it even opened. Rumors have long swirled around the West End regarding the restoration project that has been taking place on Westminster for years. It was said that this would be run by Mike Sears - the renowned restaurateur who brought us Lili Marlene's, Loie Fuller's, Ama's, and Justine's. It was said that it would be open overnight, filling a great need catering to the bar crowd spilling out of the E&O, Avery, Scurvy Dog and other West End bars. It was said that it would serve liquor in addition to food. I'm pretty sure at one point I heard that Christopher Walken himself would greet you at the door and regale you with stories of his lion taming days. It turns out none of these rumors were true. Perhaps at one time they were going to happen (especially the Christopher Walken thing), but when the place finally opened it was just a regular breakfast-and-lunch diner owned by the same folks who run the Seaplane on Allens Ave. I've gone a few times in the short while the West Side Diner has been open. I found the service to be excellent and very attentive. The first time the waitress was so concerned about making sure we were happy that I thought maybe she was one of the owners. Perhaps as a result of some of the less positive reviews on here they're really working to improve the service, or maybe the early reviews just reflect a little disorganization inherent in opening a new business. The food is good, basic diner fare. It's not really accurate to compare West End Diner to foodie establishments like Julians, Nicks, or Kitchen. The best point of comparison in the neighborhood is probably The Classic Cafe. The menu seems to have fewer options than Classic but it also seems a bit cheaper. I could see being disappointed if you went in expecting Loie Fullers and instead got Haven Brothers, but if you're just looking for a cheap, quick place to grab a simple bite, West Side Diner is worth checking out.

For a basic breakfast this HIT THE SPOT. They even offer a little fruit cup as a side--for families that gets huge points in my book. Eggs were perfect; fat, juicy sausage links and the option of hash browns, which is NOT usually something you see so often in New England. The menu is small, so don't expect choices like Modern Diner or Corner Cafe, but for our first visit it was great. Friendly wait staff, clean & new interior and comfortable seating.
(4)Amy B.
Happy to report my experience was much more positive than the others posted here. I found the service to be attentive and the food arrived quickly. Happy to report my husband and I both enjoyed our food. They do have some specials and some items on the menu you would not find in a typical diner like eggs Benedict with crab cakes. Not sure how good that dish is since I did not order it. I stuck with more typical breakfast fare. They also have a tofu scramble for vegans. I must also mention they were busy and more then able to handle the crowd. I will definitely go back.
(4)Elise J.
Really good breakfast. Wait staff exceedingly courteous and helpful. Kendra was our server today, and she helped us accommodate our son's long list of allergies. Omelette special was very good, the buttermilk pancakes with blueberries were tasty and filling, and my son's two for two combo with allergen substitutions was a hit! Be sure to check out the back room, too. Was it the best? No... But it was a very good meal for the price. Welcome to the neighborhood, West Side Diner!
(4)Mark C.
I was here to cover Jorge Elorza the morning after he won the Providence Mayor's race. When I got done shooting my story, I thought, "I ought to stay and have breakfast!" The staff and owners had been so nice! This is a classic American diner, and while they are all quaint, sometimes to food is blah. NOT Here! I had a generous portion of bacon and eggs, with nicely buttered rye toast and some of the best grilled hash browns I'd ever eaten! The price was very reasonable! My coffee and water were filled up often, and the waitresses were just as chatty and friendly as can be! I look forward to going back soon!
(4)Kameron S.
They have pretty decent food there. I really liked the homemade cornbeef hash. It was great and had chunks of cornbeef in it. I also liked the Belgian waffles. They have daily specials for different waffles and pancakes that are fun to try. The only thing I didn't like was their iced coffee. It was watery and weak. I had to get a coffee after I left. My husband said the hot coffee was fine so I don't know why the iced was so bad.
(3)Michelle G.
Ate here for the first time today. The front, the original diner, is just what you'd expect in a classic old school diner. We chose to sit on the patio. It is small but very clean and we'll kept. I was surprised when I went to the ladies room to see an entire different eating area. Beautifully renovated from an old garage. The decision to keep the original garage windows was spot on. It is charming and inviting. My husband had the hungry man. 3 eggs, choice of meat, toast, home fries and pancakes (he was allowed to substitute French toast and was very happy) I has stuffed French toast. Thick pieces of bread with cream cheese, whipped cream and a TON of strawberries. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Wait staff could not have been nicer. We will be back
(4)Shantael C.
This is my first trip here. I love the concept and I've been wanting to go for a few months now. Nothing special about the place typical diner food not exceptional not horrible. The Decour is very comforting. The service was excellent, just wanted to be wowed by the food since it is in my neighborhood. I wasn't. I love the 50s feel that you get from the inside all the way to outside. Parking is a bit difficult I could see how this could pose a problem when they are busy.
(3)Seth D.
Great diner food. Breakfast is fantastic and reasonably priced. Lunch is also quite good. One of my favorite spots.
(5)Shaun L.
My wife and I finally stopped in here today for the first time. We have driven past on many occasions, usually on weekends after the gym and have always said "one weekend. " We were very pleased. I was happy that on a Saturday at 11 am we were seated immediately at the counter with no wait. For a diner it is very clean, bright and new feeling. I was very pleased to see many different specials available. Some creative and new, some healthy and some not for me. The highlight of the trip was the housemade corn beef hash! One of my all time favorite breakfast items and it was DELICIOUS! I had the Fall River Omlette and my wife had the Eggs Benedict. Everything was very good and was what I expected from breakfast at a diner. Can't wait for the next trip.

Diners in Providence seem few and far between these days, so I was thrilled to find one so close to my work. I woke up early this morning and couldn't fall back asleep, so I decided to get up and seize the day. When I arrived in Providence I ran a quick Yelp search for diners open early. West Side Diner popped up and it was a mile from my office, so I went for it. I was the first one there and was greeted by the only waitress on at the time. She told me to sit anywhere I wanted and asked if I wanted coffee right away. By the time I got my jacket off, she had my coffee at the table. She gave me a couple minutes to decide on my order and promptly returned to jot it down. About 10 minutes later, my omelette came out along with a side of turkey bacon and a side of corned beef hash. A little overkill with the meat, I know, but the hash was homemade so I had to sample it. My omelette was delicious, perfectly cooked, and had just the right amount of ingredients. I got the "Fall River" with sauteed onions, peppers, tomatoes and linguica. So, so good. The corned beef hash was definitely homemade, had good flavor, and wasn't greasy. The turkey bacon was pretty standard and about as good as one could expect. I asked for it well done and it came out just right. The coffee was fresh, admittedly because it was just made, but had good flavor and wasn't weak or watery. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from a classic diner. I love it. It's very, very clean - you don't feel gross when you leave. The waitress told me that the new owners remodeled it the previous year. There's ample parking in the lot and out front on the street. It's in a decent part of town. The sign out front is also cool, very 50s. All in all, I love this place. I will most definitely be returning. Solid performance, WSD!
(5)Amber O.
Delicious omelettes and French toast specials. Service is Excellent! Erica is the best! Always fun and great decor and atmosphere for breakfast and lunch.
(5)Jen R.
I really like this place and I feel they fill an otherwise depressing void of decent, affordable sit-down diner breakfast options in Providence. I have always been happy with my food there. It comes in a timely manner, and the service is always super friendly and attentive even when they're busy. Some of the waitresses struggle with their high-tech iPad-based ordering system, so I question whether they are training their employees properly. Where are my Johnny Cakes? How can you have a breakfast diner menu in Rhode Island without Johnny Cakes??? I'm giving you three stars instead of four for neglecting to include Classic RI diner food on your RI diner menu.
(3)Lisa O.
I've become a fan of West Side Diner After hearing positive recommendations from friends, I decided to give this place a try. I am glad I did. West Side Diner is a modern day diner. First, I must mention that this place is very, very clean. Often diners think they can get away with not being so and that makes them more diner-ish. Wrong. The staff are also very nice which is a pleasant surprise. And I don't mean just one day when I went in, but every weekend. As for the food, it is good and consistent. There are plenty of options to choose from... including healthy options. Eating a mound of potatoes not your thing? Fear not, you can have fruit instead. My only complaint is that I wish the prices were a little cheaper. Note: This place is busy for weekend brunch and not a huge dining space. Either go later in the day before they close or early before the brunch rush.
(4)Sungeeta A.
How did I not know about this place until now?? This diner is so great! I love the retro feel, extensive menu, and affordable prices. I've only been here once and got the crab cake eggs Benedict (one of my favorite breakfast items), which was delicious! They also have very decadent items on their menu, like cheesecake pancakes, which I'm super excited to go back and try. So happy to have discovered this place, as it may very likely become the go-to weekend breakfast spot.
(5)Franklin M.
This is an old school restaurant that was moved here and restored. We arrived on a late Sunday morning and we were seated immediately. My picky girls ordered the french toast, chocolate pancakes, omelet, and the house potatoes. Quick service and delicious food what more can you ask for.
(5)Nancy W.
They're listening and getting better! I am officially changing my review from a lower rating, because I am impressed that they are listening to feedback and improving themselves. The things other reviewers mentioned, such as slow coffee refills- not the case anymore. They now serve breakfast all day, which had originally been my biggest disappointment. It's become a great spot in the neighborhood for good food for cheap, and with fast service people had hoped for. Aaaaand breakfast!
(4)Denise G.
So we keep expanding our breakfast circle looking for that elusive not too crowded, interesting food, good service, neighborhood breakfast place. West Side Diner hits close to the mark. We have been there twice recently. The first time we stumbled across it we were circling the West Side looking for a breakfast joint that did not have a 40 min wait, when we rocked up to WSD. It looks small from the outside, but had quite the roomy addition on the back. They greeted us warmly and gave our kid a coloring book and crayons without asking... brownie points. Then we perused the menu... the kid got a Nutella french toast (please no palm oil comments, I know!), and I had... ready for this... pancakes with cheesecake inside. Yeah, not nuts or fruit, I said "cheesecake". I should just stop the review there, right? On our second visit, it was just as interesting... I think I got the granola pancakes, and the kid has something smeared all over her face. Hubby as usually loved his meal... he is all about the sausage and gravy. Definately one of my new favs for breakfast!
(4)Lisa D.
So, I had the crab cake Benedict. Eggs were poached nicely, hollandaise sauce was ok, but not great. I like the hollandaise sauce at the Grange much better. Crab cakes were more like bread cakes with a bit of crab in them. Dense, heavy, bread bombs, not crisp at all. I took one bite and knew they were not good. I ate one, hoping there would be more crab, I could not find it...;( I told the owner, and the crab was taken off the bill. I asked for the hash browns, extra crispy, they were the best thing on the plate. Twenty minutes after eating and I feel like I've got a lead bomb in my belly. I might give them another chance, however with other better places in town, I won't run back. That's a shame.
(2)Kristen J.
I have been here on numerous occasions and have never had a bad experience. I love the old diner car and prefer to sit there. Get their hash and eggs! Their iced coffee is divine in a very diner like fashion. It's hard to find a seat on the weekends but trust me when I say that it is worth the wait. Most times the wait is shorter than they say!
(5)Lucinda W.
What a great find: a beautifully restored diner (with extra seating in the back room or the outdoor patio), 'white glove' cleanliness, friendly and attentive staff and ample parking. What could be better? Well, that would be the food! They make their own baked beans and corned beef hash (best since my mother's homemade), the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. Casual, down-to-earth patrons and staff make it a real pleasure.
