Good sushi and BYOB....Nuff said. Great for a date night with your spouse or a large gathering with a bunch of friends. One of my favorite spots.

We went in on a Tuesday night with reservations to celebrate a friend's birthday party. Before I even say anything about this dining experience I want to say that I am a server my self, I have been in the restaurant business for a couple of years and understand that things happen. Places get busy and it can be hard to juggle tables. Therefore I never judge the service when I dine out. However from the moment we walked into this place, the waiter was intentionally rude and completely unprofessional. To keep from making this review extremely long I'll just sum up the night by saying our group waiting over an hour for someone to come and take an order only AFTER I went to the host stand to complain. I was then told I would have to "wait because he was busy"...nice. As the night progressed the waiter continued to tell us that he had put in his 2 weeks so he actually didn't really care about anything. Proceeded to tell us his gender preference or lack of, rudely slammed sushi on the table while saying "I know you couldn't wait for this".It ended with him telling us how he had previously worked for rich "snobby" people. Needless to say I was completely appalled by his attitude and did not tip. By far the WORST service I have ever received. Hopefully the staff will hire someone who knows how to leave his issues at home.

@ Kurt A. "Don't come on a Saturday with eleven of your friends and expect anything but mayhem." Are you kidding me? Walk into ANY decent restaurant in Providence on a Saturday night with a party of 12 with no reservations.... Then watch as the staff shit

Middle of the pack sushi restaurant. Not great, not horrible.

My Fav place to grab some delicious and affordable sushi. I recently went there and brought my own wine but GASP! forgot glasses...No worries...The waiter brought out some nice wine glasses for us and was happy to oblige. They have a great variety of rolls and Sushi and sashimi as well..The Salmon and yellow tail are my favs simply delicious! I suggest the HOT roll and the Crazy roll for those nervous about trying sushi. But really anything fried or deep fried is going to taste good right! Give it a go its worth a shot!

Although I've been to Tokyo before, first impressions still carry some significance. When we first walked in, the girl behind the host stand seemed to be taking an order on the phone, but can't she at least make eye contact? Nothing. We finally asked (well, whispered) if we could sit anywhere since she's still on the phone, and she waves us in apologetically. It takes a few minutes for someone to come by, but not a big deal. He was very flustered that we didn't have the pencil and paper menu, even after we were ready to order, he left briefly to get this. The BYOB feature is always great, and they do have bottle openers and glassware for you. We ordered appetizers and our sushi all together. The miso soup and seaweed salad arrived quickly, so all seemed well even with our very nervous server-who repeatedly told us he was new here. I can understand that having been a server, but some people would be turned off and probably worried they are in for a bumpy ride. Indeed we were. Two platters of sushi arrived next, half of which wasn't our order! He brought our paper menu over that he himself had filled out while we verbally ordered. He pointed to a sashimi sampler that wasn't checked off and that we definitely didn't order. He said he would go check on it, I repeated and pointed out what we did order for him. He still seemed confused, now I was a little concerned. It took him a few trips back to our table to even take away the sashimi, and bring the correct sushi over. I was trying not to breathe on what was likely someone else's food. Did I mention that all the sushi arrived before our appetizers? The girl from the front came by to ask how everything was so far...Okay, except that most of our apps hadn't even arrived yet. She came back a few minutes later to ask if we still wanted them because they hadn't been ordered. To their credit it only took a couple minutes to get them, why bother telling us about your mistake? We finally got everything right, and to actually get to the food part of this review-I really enjoyed everything. The soup and seaweed salad were standard but tasty, the duckling and scallion appetizer was a bit salty but really good, as we're the shrimp dumplings. I had the Hawaii, Sakura and Venus rolls, the first two were delicious, the Venus was a bit boring, my mistake for choosing it really. My boyfriend liked his sushi as well. Most important thing going out for sushi, is that it tastes fresh (and personally that the wasabi is actually spicy), and this was a definite success. However, the process dragged on even more when we tried to settle our bill. We had a $50 restaurant.com certificate, minimum purchase of $100. We asked early on what our total was, and were told we were over $100. After waiting at our table for the server to take our payment, we realized we had to walk over to the host stand to pay because the server didn't know what to do with our certificate. We ended up not being at the minimum, because the sashimi we did not order was part of that original total-great. So we had to order a couple rolls to go just to use our certificate. At first we said we would just come back another time, to which the manager who magically appeared said he would not accept the certificate after the new year so we should probably use it. Funny since the certificates say they do not expire. There was some issue with the credit card machine and a different one had to be used, but thankfully they weren't out of paper, like a few other reviewers mentioned. There was also a very, very rowdy table in the upper seating area literally banging on their tables and yelling while doing sake bombs. Yikes. The man taking care of our check told us how much he hates when they come in. Hmm, ask them to act like civilized patrons or leave? Just a thought. Overall, if you eat at Toyko, expect good food and fresh sushi, but probably some - er, many - glitches in the service, so bring a little patience and a lot of booze!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Providence. We've been coming here very regularly for a long time, and the food and service are awesome. It's not a chic, upscale sushi house, but it's much more affordable and delicious than any other Japanese place I've found in RI. If you have 3 or more people and like sushi, I recommend getting a big boat. It's always different and always delicious.

I've lived in the area for about 10 years and have been visiting Tokyo here in Providence for about eight. The first thing that you have to understand about this place is that it is not a 'high society' type of sushi joint. This is not where you take your first date, or your in-laws, or your boss unless you are POSITIVE that good food is more important to them than atmosphere. The restaurant sports well-used tables, chairs that have seen better days and there is little to no decor anywhere. The waitstaff speak very little English. The language barrier is very much in place and there are times when service seems terribly slow. However, when I go out for sushi - when I want to go for sushi that I know will be consistently good, that will be reasonably priced and that is local I go to Tokyo. I go knowing that it's a crap-shoot with the waiters so I don't go to Tokyo at noon if I have to be in E. Greenwich for a 2pm appointment. I have never had a roll there that I didn't enjoy. I absolutely love their wall menu of new and different rolls that are created randomly - some make the specials menu, some are only there a brief time so make certain to check it out! - I have never had inconsistent quality. They make a great Ahiru Donburri the flavor of the duck is incredible. The green-bean maki rolls are wonderful. Try the Hot Roll and the Juliette - two of my personal favorites! And don't forget to check the special's board - across from the register for something different. Once again though, seriously, go to Tokyo in Providence if you what you are looking for is good sushi. Go elsewhere for atmosphere.

I'm sure this restaurant is somebody's taste. It's not mine. They lost me at the miso soup. I *love* miso soup. I'd happily eat miso soup every day of my life. But this miso soup was... sweet. Outright sweet. It was just enough that I thought, "This is going to be some people's favorite miso soup, revolting though it is." And I'm reading on the other reviews that I was right. The sushi we got was nothing to write home about, and again, it all had that weird sweetness added to everything. I left feeling sticky. It's tough to ruin two of my favorite foods so much that I want to go home and rinse my mouth, but Tokyo managed. I'm not at all surprised that people like this stuff, and that most of them probably aren't able to detect it. Such is the American diet. But I am cruelly able. While I wouldn't dissuade anyone that liked sweetened things as a rule (the service is fine and the price is right, certainly), I doubt I'll be back anytime soon.

Awesome service; fresh, tasty fish & tempura, definitely a local fav.

Having lived in NY for the past four years, i missed Tokyo sushi very much! You go to Toyko for the sushi; its fresh, creative, and SO YUMMY. I have never had a bad meal there, and am always psyched to head back. The resturant is simple decor and simple service, the waitstaff may not be the most attentive, but like i said you go for the food more than the experience. Its a BYOB resturant too! My favorites are the Wickaden roll (tempura flounder) and the Cranston roll (tempura mango and plum)... I was sad to see some low ratings, but honestly if youre into creative sushi it's a great choice!

Worst service I have experienced ANYWHERE in my life! Myself and two friends arrived at 8:40pm on a Friday night. I was really looking forward to trying the sushi having eaten at Sakura down the street, Kon's in East Greenwich, Yokohama and Mizu in Warwick, Seven Moons... (the list goes on) and had heard good things about Tokyo. We were seated promptly and our order was taken in a reasonable amount of time. After that it all went down hill. The server didn't bring us any water before taking our orders, but we could tell she was new (in fact she didn't even look old enough to be working) so we didn't think much of it and asked her to bring us some when we ordered our food along a glass of Coke. One of my friends ordered chicken teriyaki while myself and my other friend ordered assorted sushi rolls and miso soup. After about 20 minutes the chicken teriyaki arrived but still no water. Or soda. Or soup. So we asked the girl who brought over the dish if she could bring us our water and she politely said "Of course!" Only to have her come back a moment later and explain they were backed up and didn't have any clean glasses at the moment. I work in the food industry and can definitely understand getting backed up. But we had been there a good 30 minutes by this point and had asked twice for water. It doesn't take THAT long to wash 3 glasses. I'm sure a restaurant such as Tokyo has a dishwasher. USE IT! Our waitress then brought us over an appetizer we didn't order and looked very confused when we sent it back. Meanwhile we are still shushi-less and our friend is patiently waiting to eat his meal, which we told him to go ahead and eat before it got cold. Well, he FINISHED his meal, we still didn't have water, soup or sushi (we had been waiting a good 40 minutes at this point) and we hear the waitress tell the table next to us (after they had been waiting 20 minutes to get their check) that the credit card machine was down, so cash was the only way to pay. You would think this would be something you would mention to customers BEFORE they ordered. Of the 3 people in our party only one of us had any cash on us and it wasn't nearly enough to cover all of our food. Then the party at the table behind us who came in a good 20 minutes after us received their sushi and water. We had HAD IT!! We gathered our belongings, went up to the register and told the girls to cancel the rest of our order. We explained we had been waiting 40 minutes without water or food and have no way to pay for the rest of the meal besides with cards. We didn't even receive an apology for the wait or inconvenience. And their solution for the credit machine being down (by "down" they meant they ran out of paper for the machine) was to right down the persons credit card number, have them sign a hand written receipt and they said they would run it through later. I don't know about other people, but I wouldn't trust a restaurant with my information like that. We paid for the meal that was eaten and left. This was the worst run establishment I've ever witnessed! The waitresses were nice enough but didn't seem to care at all that their customers were unhappy. No management, no directions, no organization. I will never go there again! It's a shame, I was really looking forward to trying it. Too bad your service was so incredibly horrible it lost you 3 customers forever.
(1)Becky M.
The miso soup hits the spot every time. The sushi is better elsewhere, but certainly not ad The service is on-par. I haven't ventured to order anything but sushi and soup. But I'd rather be at Sakura.
(3)Edwin L.
Alright... here is the low down... walked in and we got seated to a cheap ikea table... i requested to move to a more respectable table, which i got. took over 25 minutes to order our food and over 30 minutes to receive my water.. wtf... the food was alright... it's average when it comes to sushi; nothing amazing. The service really blows! I recommend dropping all of your wait staff and rebuild... get food runners... make it the responsibility of the bus boy to ensure the water is always full... make it mandatory that every customer get's there water as they are seated.

Dragon California Roll! DRAGON CALIFORNIA ROLL!!!!!!! Every time I find myself in Providence, I am tempted to come here, just for the Dragon California Roll. [They have other good stuff here, like fried tofu and yakitori, so bring you can bring your seafood hating friends] I had never eaten sushi this yummy, not even at Sushi Mura's (my second favorite sushi place). It was completely worth it for about 10 dollars. The roll stayed solid even after I bit off half of it. It was kind of scary, like maybe they used glue to keep the rice together. This must be the best Japanese place in Providence. The food is very fresh, and the service is pretty good though it could be quicker. Generally, I found the hospitality to vary depending on who I came here with. When I came alone because I could not stop the hunger, I was able to chat casually with 2 of the waiters and the sushi chef. I have no idea what the person who said the sushi here is terrible was talking about. Maybe they don't really know what good sushi is and are just jerks pretending to know more than they do. Maybe the real chef was out that night. Also, the sushi here is not that cheap. Rolls typically run anywhere from 7 dollars and up at any decent place. I would know, i've spent enough of my income all around the US AND JAPAN to know what good sushi is, and what it is not.

My Girlfriend and I have been going to Tokyo for the last 8 years. We keep going back to Tokyo for the quality and the price. Many people might not appreciate the decor or service but that is not what keeps us going back. I suspect they have high turn over with their waitstaff but the sushi chef has been the same man for years. Some times on Fridays and Saturdays you might get some noisy college folks. Do not be fooled by other reviews. If you want cheap sushi, BYOB and excellent quality go to Tokyo!
(4)Laurie B.
We were the only ones in the restaurant (which has plenty of seating) around 4 o'clock which seemed a little weird to me. It also smelled off in there. I can't describe it but it's not something you wanna smell when eating. They had a lunch menu, a regular menu, and a paper menu (where you filled out with a pencil what you wanted.) We ordered 4 different rolls and a miso soup. The miso soup was okay. It almost seemed a little burnt. The sushi was just okay too and I was a little disappointed about the amount in some rolls. Also, be careful because some of the rolls have straight sriracha on them, which i choked on for several minutes. Our server was nice. He was the only person besides the sushi chef that we saw working there. The bathroom seriously needs an update. There is graffiti all over the walls and the toilet paper and soap sit on a random table in between the sink and toilet. It looked like in hadn't been cleaned in days. Being that this restaurant is extremely close to my apartment, I'm willing to give it another chance but for take out.

Tokyo is one of those places that is difficult to rate overall. I gave it 3 stars since I know how to manage the negatives. I will continue going at least once every couple weeks (early evening during midweek - read below and you'll understand why). The tables, chairs, table setting, decor are all crap. If you want an upscale experience or somewhere to impress that special someone, avoid Tokyo. The service is not great either. There are two different sushi menus. One is the kind where you write your order and the other is a laminated "special roll" menu that you just tell the waiter. This always leads to a little confusion. Yes, it is BYOB so during the school year on Thursday - Saturday nights expect it to be very busy with big groups of students carrying in their 1.5L bottles of cheap wine and 12 packs of Natural Light. The noise level goes up the later you're there as does the wait time for a table. Most importantly, the food is excellent. Especially the sushi. The raw fish is fresh and delicious and they don't skimp on the fish. The selection of different sushi is very good and the hot dishes are excellent for cold days. Especially the beef sukiyaki. I've dined here at least 30 times with my husband and with groups. We order a little bit of everything. I've never experienced any problems with the food like the other reviewers.
(3)Rob J.
There is no good reason to eat here. It's not far from some guy just making you food in his house, so probably best to just make it yourself or go elsewhere. Not inedible, but I can't imagine you cannot find a better option unless it's the only place open.
(2)Nicole R.
After walking in and being ignored by the waitstaff that was all standing behind the podium for a good 10 minutes we finally got seated. The sushi came after a 30 minute or so wait and it wasn't even that busy. I'm not really sure where the disconnect was but it seemed like a long wait for mediocre sushi.
(3)Zico L.
Tokyo's service has been going downhill and this has been by far the Worst dining experience ever. They ran out of glasses to serve us water, brought us food we didn't order and we were still waiting for anything from our actual order to be served. We literally waited about 30 mins no food no water nothing. I'm fairly certain they lost our order slip and completely forgot we existed that night. we ended up leaving and o by the way, they neglected to tell people that their credit card machine had run out of paper so people had to pay in cash or they were going to write down the credit card # on a piece of paper (ironically) to run at a later time (yeah that's completely legit and secure use of people's information).
(1)Jennifer D.
Def recommend this low key joint. No frills atmosphere, but not a reflection of the food...thumbs up!! The sushi will not disappoint!
(5)Jessica H.
We ordered takeout from Tokyo Restaurant once, and will not be going back. It was the worst sushi I have ever had. Two rolls were inedible. The more basic rolls (spicy tuna and yellowtail) were bland. All in all, a huge disappointment.
(1)Joseph H.
Service here was horrible thats the only way I could describe it. It was slow, and abrupt. Food came out in all different order and pieces of our meals were forgotten. The sushi was a bit tough at times and difficult to eat.
(2)Jonny C.
3 stars, because the sushi is warmer than id like and the ambiance is meh, but....cheap. Way cheap, and the rolls are huge, the place doesnt charge corkage and you can hit up Campus Wines on Brook St (2 blocks) for a 6 pack of Sapporo talls and a bottle of saki, and then focus on eating madd amounts of raw fish. This place is legendary, and i love doing an early dinner here, and just getting after it. Seating at the bar or tables. Wildly popular with East Siders and Brownies. BTW, How does Wickenden support three Sushi spots (Tokyo, Sakura, and Oni)
(3)Gina-Marie M.
Eh, wasn't my fav. cheap but the waiter spoke little english and it was difficult to order. It was also freezing! The Miso soup was yummy but the rolls were a bit to small for me. There also very little veggies in the rolls.
(3)cynthia r.
So disappointed. I used to eat here all the time but my recent visit (about 3 weeks ago) will be my last for a while. My friends and I were sat immediately but put in a corner due to a party they were expecting. We were sat at a plastic table and then we were forgotten about. No one came by until I flagged down some one who had to get our server who still took his time coming. There was a 20 minute gap between people getting their food. Meanwhile the party they were catering to (only about 5 people) were being very attentively taken care of. If I had to guess, most of the staff haven't been waiting tables long. In short, food was still good but the service wasn't worth it at all.
(2)Colby P.
Gotta love Wickenden St. and this is my absolutely favorite establishment there, perhaps in the entire city. Used to eat here two to three times a week. The sushi list is diverse, containing many traditional and fushion (read as Americanized) choices. The Wickenden roll, my favorite, is based around flounder tempura. Other menu highlights: the fire hamachi appetizer, eggplant tempura roll (for you all you veg people), spicey lobster roll (an excellent texture/taste for a very reasonable price) and the black pepper seared salmon appetizer. It's BYOB as are most places on Wickenden, and sports a very pleasant and attentive waitstaff. The side room with floor seating is excellent for large groups.
(5)Irene Y.
I went here for lunch only one time, and was not impressed. I had ordered a lobster roll, and the lobster meat in my roll seemed processed and not genuine. My friend had salmon sashimi plate that she seemed to enjoy. The sushi was tolerable, but not delicious. There are many other sushi restaurants in providence that have better sushi and/or better ambiance. I would only come here if you want to avoid the wait or are in the area and starving.
(3)Emily G.
Service...alright. Food...alright. Overall ambiance...alright. This place is just, as Yelp ranks a 3-star rating, A-OK. Few things to note: BYOB. I was banking on getting Sapporo while I was here, and they didn't have their liquor license. Second, if you are a large party, make a reservation. Third, stick with the sushi combination or dinners. You get the best bang for your buck. Overall, okay, but nothing special. I'm sure there are better sushi place in Providence.
(3)Renée G.
I LOVE TOKYO!!! I haven't found comparable sushi here in Richmond yet. I miss the fresh, tasty salmon sashimi; the super-friendly waitstaff; and the giant list of delicious special rolls. No, the décor isn't anything to write home about, but whatever. By far my favorite sushi restaurant in Providence.
(5)Daniel G.
You go here because it's cheap, it's BYOB and there's usually seating at a table. The quality and the service are just okay. Personally, there are better sushi joints around Providence, both in quality and affordability. Nothing special... unless you're just looking for another sushi place to try out.
(2)Wendy O.
We love this place! My husband and I love our sushi and love that Tokyo has both great quality fish and reasonable prices!
(4)Kat F.
I used to really like this place, but my last experience there wasn't very good. They were out of the appetizer I wanted to order, so I settled for a seaweed salad that had clearly been sitting in the fridge for a long while. The rolls were ok, but the service was slow and the entire experience was underwhelming.
(2)Rich B.
After reading some of the atrocious reviews on here, I had to throw in my 2 cents. Tokyo is a gem. If you want to pay for overpriced sushi, head to Wayland Square. If you want to be forced to switch tables mid-meal, head to Sakura. If you're looking for inexpensive sushi, BYOB (yes, you can bring your own alcohol), and wonderfully friendly waitstaff, you've come to the right place. The nearby Campus Wines and Liquors gives you a great place to grab a nice wine or microbrew to accompany the large quantities of raw fish you are about to inhale. Service tends to be slow on Friday and Saturday nights. This is the case with most really good restaurants. If you want to avoid the loud and slightly obnoxious college crowd, come for an early dinner (4-6) on the weekends or hit up Tokyo between Sunday and Thursday. When I say inexpensive sushi, I'm not kidding. You can order $40 worth of sushi that would normally be $100 at other sushi establishments. The best deal on a roll is the Sakura... a huge roll of tuna, your choice or yellowtail or salmon, cucumber, rice and tobiko for $6! Yes, you get two types of fish in one roll for 6 bones! The miso soup and seaweed salads are cheap and delicious. I tend to gravitate towards the pepper salmon (try it!), crazy roll (shrimp tempura and spicy mayo), smoked salmon, las vegas roll (spicy tuna surrounded by panko flakes), yellowtail and salmon nigiri. Tokyo had me sold the first time I visited. The vegetarian and sushi options are endless. They also have some standard asian fare for the unfortunate sushi-phobe in your crowd. :-) Check it out if you're in the Wickenden area!
(5)Taylor T.
Tokyo is pretty much good for one thing: takeout. I like their sushi menu and their rolls are great, but the poor service just isn't worth the pain and frustration. Even putting in a takeout order can sometimes be challenging. If you want a great dine-in sushi experience, head to Haruki in Wayland Square. If you can settle for solid takeout, Tokyo is the way to go.
(3)Sarah C.
Service is terribly slow and the sushi is meh. Every time my friends want to go here, I fight them and try to go somewhere else. And somehow we always end up there...
(2)Jen L.
I used to go here. Never again. Why? Because the sushi made a whole party of 6 run for the bathroom for 2 days. They also have shit for service and besides the green bean roll I do not miss them one bit.
(1)Adrian M.
This place is the shiznit! BYOB and good sushi!
(4)michelle c.
Jeez - trying to pick between a two and three star rating. The pros: anything tempura is done really well and I love the seaweed salad/miso soup. I also like that it is BYOB. Cons: it looks very worn down and not kept up - the table we were at was at an angle with everyone and everything tilting to the right. It also has had a cleaner type smell when I have gone - perhaps it may be my bad timing. The service is really weird, they run to your table when you first arrive and then disappear - but not really - when we looked up all the servers were standing in a row by the counter watching us eat. I felt a little rushed at the end when they reappeared with the check - I like more time with friends/family before running out the door. Think I will stick with a two.
(2)Stephen D.
Sushi is always fresh here.., the prices are fair...byob is a good thing... But it needs some maintenance work done to it... The waiters sometimes don't understand me but what can u do when I can't go wrong with the price of the food!!'
(3)S S.
My friend and I wanted to surprise a third friend. The former had just completed a somelier exam, and was back in the area for a break; we wanted a place to surprise the latter friend, and where we could bring our own wine to share. This place served perfectly. The food was great; they both enjoyed their sushi, and I enjoyed my chicken teriyaki. We were treated very well and patiently as we took more than enough time to even look at the menu, let alone order. The place was very busy on a Friday night, the wait staff seemed harried at best, so I'm sure a non-demanding table like ours was very welcome. I think if you're looking for a lot of attention, you'd need to either speak with the staff in advance, or find another place. But if you're looking for good food and a place to sit back with your drink of choice with your friends, I think this place would serve you very well. Parking is a bit involved - you may have to park a block or two away, but it's in a decent neighborhood. When you're ready to retire, there is the Coffee Exchange down the street, and Campus Liquors nearby should you need to restock.
(3)Jesse B.
I'll give the sushi 4 1/2 stars, the other food 3 1/2 stars, and the service a 2. First, the sushi was presented beautifully and delicious, and the special roll menu is extensive. The crab fried rice was a platter of fried rice with three imitation crab sticks dropped on top of it. The lobster tempura special appetizer was actually one piece of lobster tempura (which was very good), and a bunch of vegetable tempura pieces served with it. The edamame was good (could anyone ever screw up edamame?). The fried ice cream was good, although you'd expect it to be green tea or vanilla ice cream inside... not strawberry. The service was definitely lacking last night. We got our food before anyone bothered to give us napkins and chopsticks, and it took us asking more than once while sitting there with food on our table to get them. When we had a question about one of our sushi rolls, we got kind of a gruff response. We went here based on a friend's recommendation on the quality of the sushi, and for that they were spot on. I don't live in the neighborhood, but if I did I think I would frequent this place for take-out but would think twice about going for a sit-down.
(4)Trevor B.
Good, affordable sushi with fast, friendly service. Oh and BYOB just makes it all the better:)
(4)Kurt A.
Tokyo is probably the second best place to get sushi in Providence. Haruki East is the best, honestly, but there are reasons to make the trip over to Wickenden for Tokyo. First, let me mention that the fish has always been of high quality. I've been coming here for years, and it's been very consistent. The sushi is less expensive than other places (see Haruki East), not necessarily CHEAP, but you can get by without taking out a second mortgage on your house. Everything is always fresh and delicious. And I'm not sure where they're getting their mackerel, but it's shockingly good! There are some issues: First, just avoid this place on Thursday-Saturday nights. Their service is, and always has been, a weak spot, and when they get slammed it's a total disaster. Don't come on a Saturday with eleven of your friends and expect anything but mayhem. I'm not excusing it - but forewarned is forearmed. Go for lunch or dinner M-W. Another issue is that this place could honestly use a good coat of paint. Maybe not a huge issue, but fit and finish count for something. One last plus: BYOB. Stop down the street @ Campus Wines and you're good to go. Edit: Unfortunately I've got to edit this review, and not for the better. I had a pretty bad experience at Tokyo, where the fish I received was CLEARLY past its prime. A bit more digging around the RI department of health website shows a laundry list of violations at Tokyo, many of which are food handling violations. Perhaps I could turn a blind eye if we weren't talking about raw fish here, but that's not the case. I've had a lot of good meals at Tokyo, so I feel bad about doing a 180 on them after all this time. But all it took was that one mouthful that tasted like I licked a wharf at low tide in the middle of July. Compound that with their apparently ongoing habit of DOH violations, and I'll be happy to drop the extra $ at Haruki East from now on. Link to DOH reports site: food.ri.digitalhealthdep…

One of RI's many many Japanese restaurants, a good one too.

Absolutely my favorite restaurant in Providence! The service there is excellent. They are very quick and friendly. We like to sit at the bar but the few times we've been seated at tables, they seem to be uneven and the water cups slide to the other side...strange. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but the great service and delicious food more than make up for it. They have a large amount of vegetarian roll options and will specially create something if you ask. My favorites are the shitake rolls. T eats fish and he loves this place as well. Whenever we have friends in town, we always take them to Tokyo.
(5)Art V. B.
Average sushi for fish eaters, good meatless sushi for vegetarians. Yam sushi and tempura are probably the best vegetarian options. They don't sell beer, a sushi place without Sapporo or Kirin Beer is like a French place without a wine list. But you can solve this oddity by bringing your own beer to the restaurant. Service may not be that friendly if the place is packed and/or you eat too slow.

Before I give Tokyo a good review I'm gonna crap on stupid reviewers. Ok let just lay some things out for the really stupid people out there. They don't serve alcohol. That six pack on the table next to you is not something those people order it's something they brought. Second, just because it's a sushi restaurant does not mean that every employee will speak Japanese. (look in most kitchens in RI and you will see a full staff of people from Guatemala no matter what food they serve). Anyone who thinks they got a hangover from sushi is a fuxking moron. Why is it that the people who always talk about food poisoning seem to have never had it? I've had it and it's not a headache or an occasional trip to the bathroom. Oh and the dude who didn't like the quality of the table an thought he should have water faster, you're just a fucking idiot. Ok I'm done bitching about other people. The service might not be the greatest but I've never had it be terrible and I've probably eaten here over 100 times. the sushi is damn good (Haruki is a little better but also more expensive) I have enjoyed everything I have gotten there. The baby octopus is fantastic, and I think their seaweed salad is the best in the city. Staff is friendly if not the quickest and sometime it's a little difficult to talk with them (they don't understand you, you can't understand them) but that's what happens when people from different cultures with different native languages get to live together and interact. Basically this place is damn good and people are stupid.

Went here with a couple of my neighbors on a Friday night 3/4/11. We had called ahead and asked if we needed a reservation. They said no, but we needed one! It was about a 30 minute wait minimum for a table. Considering the college area and the time, I can't complain, but we asked if we needed a reservation before coming to limit the wait. The service itself was slow, the noise was unbearable at one point due to the large table of college kids next to us about 20 of them partying it up. It's BYOB which we knew and my neighbor picked up a 6 pack of Sapporo down the street. I only ordered a few things but all of what I ordered was wonderful. The tobiko (flying fish roe), saba (mackerel) some of the best mackerel I've ever had (as another reviewer stated), and one of their rolls called the River roll. While I'm ashamed to admit I forget everything that was in it, it was topped with black tobiko and was something different that I enjoyed. The miso soup was good with a good amount of tofu and kombu in there, good flavor. Overall foodwise the place was great, parking wasn't too bad, price on the Nigiri and Maki was great! Service was very slow, but given the area I'll forgive them a little..... Check out my Sushi Only Review site at : outforsushi.com It is being worked on, new review coming soon. Suggest a place and I'll give it a try!!!

Ok, its not 4 star sushi. But for the price, its one of the best places I've ever eaten. Not a very large place. But great food at a great price!

my first Japanese restaurant experience was at Tokyo on Wickenden, so it'll always have a special place in my heart and I will continue to go despite it's hit or miss service flaws, because the sushi is relatively fresh and tasty and they have all my favorite rolls and raw fish on rice! The Dragon Roll is great if you love raw salmon and yummy eel. The Rainbow roll is awesome awesome awesome if you love eating raw fish! And finally they have raw fish on a bed of rice, like Sake (Salmon) Don, Tekka (Tuna) Don, and Chirashi for the raw sushi variety at a very affordable price. I can't say much for their cooked food menu, because I only go to eat the raw stuff, but my husband orders from the hot foods menu and he is always suggesting to come here, so it must be good. Oh, we share a Shrimp Temura appetizer and it is correctly crispy and fills us up a good deal before the meal comes...that could be a bad thing if you're used to eating small meals.
(4)Irapuca P.
Their food isn't all that great. Their service blows. There are better options within a few blocks. skip this joint.
(2)Courtney H.
I used to eat here at least once a week when I lived in RI. I'm addicted to their Providence Roll... it's so yummy! BUT I hadn't been in a number of years when my husband and I decided to go for dinner. While the food was the same, the atmosphere was not. The place was a little hot and smelled a bit like fish. I know, it's a sushi place, but it just didn't seem right!

After reading some of the reviews here I am completely taken back by the recurring theme; bad service. I have had nothing but the opposite experience each and every time I go to here. Ronnie, the greeter and take out servicer is the most delightful person I have ever met. He is pleasant and attentive each time I am either eating in or dining out. In fact he even knows my order by heart when I call just by saying my name. Take out never takes long and the sushi is scrumptious. I have ordered several different types of rolls and am going through all the latest and greatest wall menu lately with the Pikichau Roll as my favorite right now. The eggplant appetizer is super good especially with the sweet miso sauce, yum yum. I have gone for dinner which is always great especially with large groups because you won't spend a ton on drinks since its byob which normally is half your cost. I love this place and stand by it when I say you must go here!
(5)Jon S.
Tokyo is a nice affordable restaurant with excellent sushi. The chefs behind the sushi bar are friendly and accomodating, and will make sushi rolls wrapped in cucumber instead of rice upon request. This is great if you're on a low-carb diet and need a sushi fix! My only complaint is that the bathrooms aren't kept super clean but that doesn't take away from the sushi.
(5)Laura K.
If I could give less than 1 star, I would. I used to love Tokyo, that was, until we found a huge beetle like bug crawling in our sushi boat...the waiters did not apologize when we called them over to show them, I thought they were going to accuse us of planting it there they reacted so poorly. We wouldn't eat the sushi near the bugs, and they still charged us for everything. I doubt they've changed due to the mixed reviews, really, cheap sushi is not good! Go to an actual good sushi place that takes care of it's customers! I have not been back in several years and I don't miss it.

What a great surprise! In Providence, RI ... a high quality, fun, japanese/sushi experience. Everything I've tried here has been very good so far. And, the VALUE is amazing. Everytime I go there w/ my girlfriend, we choose whatever we want, leave completely full, and it is always less than $40 (2 people) ... this includes coconut juice, coke, and seawead salad starter, 2-3 sushi plates and 2 orders of spicy crunchy shrimp tempura rolls. The food tastes very fresh, the staff is friendly, and it's a good deal ... I always have cravings for this particular place. I really enjoyed sitting and eating at the low japanese-style seating area ... it really completes the whole experience. Try it ! Wickenden St. is clearly the fun street for "adventurous foodies" (not pretentious ones) to have a good meal. The street itself provides an interesting walk, so park at the bottom of the hill, and walk up to Tokyo Restaurant, then you'll get to see other local spots. /tom

Tokyo has been my second home in Providence since I moved here nine years ago. The sushi is wonderful-- fresh fish, perfectly seasoned rice, and creative combinations. My favorites include the crazy roll (shrimp tempura, spicy mayo, avocado, and cucumber), yummy roll (yam tempura, avocado, eel), winter roll (tuna, hamachi, and avocado wrapped with cucumber), and Boston Maki (classic salmon avocado). In addition to the standard list of maki, nigiri and sashimi, they recently added a whole page of "special" rolls that include maki wrapped with cucumber instead of rice and nori, oysters, and mango-lobster rolls. I haven't ordered cooked food beyond appetizers in a few years, so I can't vouch for the entrees, but the tempura, seaweed salad, house salad, and miso soup are all good. The only negative thing I have to say about Tokyo is that the service is usually terrible. My friend and I refuse to sit on the right side of the restaurant because the staff forgets about you. Tokyo is a terrific value, and is great for anytime of day-- I've even been known to go for "sushi brunch" on the weekends (they open at 11 am and have great lunch specials). Nothing cures a hangover like raw fish! Really, you should try it some time.

Keeping it curt, try the crazy roll...its fantastic....but rather go down the street to Sakuras, i like it better--

Our first impression of this place was that it was dirty looking. The place smelled old and musty and like old food. Our seats had rips in it, and the floor tiles made me trip cuz they were all broken up. So the people who work here and run this place are not asian whatsoever. No big deal. The sushi was a good amount for the price. We ordered one of them sushi boats. It was OK. Not amazing not terrible, a few pieces were a tad bit mushy and probably not the freshest. The only bad thing was that I got a bad stomach ache after and diarrhea almost immediately after finish eating. Sorry that was gross, but just want to inform other consumers. Service was a tad bit lazy. Hmm what else.... That's it, I was relatively unimpressed. Oh ya - my friend told me that he looked the place up and found they had a lot of health code violations (repeat). Stuff like placing a cutting board on top of a garbage barrel. You can't do that when you are preparing raw food! Bf complained that he didn't feel comfortable eating raw fish in that dirty place. But I am the one with the diarrhea. Whatever, I won't be back.

Pros: 1. BYOB, save your cash by getting your beer wholesale before you head here. 2. The sushi is good and a diverse selection. I'm a big fan of eel and they have multiple eel dishes. There is something here for everyone. 3. Reasonable. Cons: 1. Can get crowded. I've been here a few times where i've had to wait longer than 30 minutes for a table. Not that I mind but there really isn't anywhere to stand, you kind of get stuck dillydallying in front of the entrance. 2. It can be slow. Its sushi so it takes awhile, but sometimes its painfully slow. This can be remedied by Pro #1 though as good company and a few drinks often makes the time pass by pretty quickly. Also, its usually worthwhile to get something to tide you over while you wait for the sushi, whether its some fried rice, sticky rice, miso soup, octopus salad, or ademame (sic?) an appetizer helps to make the time pass more quickly and you won't even mind the wait. 3. Ambiance. This is something that could definitely be worked on. A single bathroom and drapes to cover some "unsightly areas" as well as not really top notch seats and tables, its passable but reinvesting alittle money could do them a world of good. Lastly if you bring your own sake they have the proper glasses but if you bring wine or beer be ready to drink it out of whatever they have in the back. I highly recommend this place to go out with friends but look for somewhere more upscale or classier if your going out on a date.

one of the friend i went with speaks perfect Japaneses. guess what? the waiters don't speak Japanese. A couple next to us thought one order is 1 piece instead of 6 pieces. The waiter didn't point out and end up they have whole table of sushi and they have to call their sister and brothers to come over to the restaurant to finish the sushi.

I'm really only giving this place two stars because our service was TERRIBLE. My boyfriend and I went there on a weeknight and our server barely paid any attention to us. There were only three other tables there, and he wasn't the only server... It's not like he was busy! He forgot my drink order, and 15 minutes later when we asked him for it, he took another five minutes to deliver it. The man who seated us delivered our food to us, but it took forever (seeing a trend here?) for the server to pick up the dirty plates and wrap up the rest of our food. By the time he came back with our leftovers, he walked away from us so fast that we couldn't ask him for our check and surprise, surprise, we had to flag him down to get it. Aside from the awful service, our food was very good. Presentation is also really appealing. We ordered mostly different kinds of maki and I do have to say that their selection of flavor combinations is large. You can tell that they try to cater to every palate from their varied cooking techniques to the sweet-savory combinations. Really an interesting menu. We enjoyed everything we had with the exception of a roll that had a "mango sauce" which tasted to me like a cheap bar puree. I would most likely not go back to Tokyo to dine in, first because of our service experience and second because it lacks ambiance. It makes me a little sad, but maybe takeout is the way to go with this place.

This review will not relate to the Sushi served at all. I'm not a big fan of sushi, hence my hesitation when my coworkers agreed to go here. But you will not be forced to eat that; there are other edible options. If you're someone who's used to eating several small meals a day you will be 3/4's full on the salad and soup they serve before the appetizer. The servers had some difficulty understanding our group order but nothing major. Nice dining set-up and BYOB!!
(3)Paul M.
Here's the thing with Tokyo, the food is absolutely wonderful and varied in taste; the presentation is wonderful. However this is supremely offset by the TERRIBLE service. I made a reservation here for my 21st birthday for 6 people total. Like others have reported the waiter payed NO attention to us what-so-ever. When he originally came to take our orders he off-the-bat said "No alcohol", and we just assumed he meant they did not service it as we saw no cocktail menu, etc; only to find out they did have alcahol and just didn't feel like checking IDs apparently. It took approx. 20 minutes to get drinks, soda and pineapple/strawberry juice. We then realized after about another 30 minutes that none of our food had been served other than miso soup, so we asked where our sushi was; another 20 minutes later we got it. After all the sushi was eaten one of the people at the table was beginning to wonder where her yakisoba was at this point we had been at the restaurant for 2 hours. We had to almost shout a simple "excuse us" waiter to get his attention because waiving our arms was apparantly not good enough. None of us have ever been tempted to give NO tip because of such terrible service, we did end up leaving one...not your standard 20% by any means either. I do not suggest going out to eat to Tokyo what-so-ever.

I've been to Tokyo many times over the years. Their pricing is reasonable, if not low, for the area, but they have often messed up my order. I normally get take out because the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. This past Friday I decided to bring my kids and dine in. We got a couple of appetizers and ordered sushi as well. Our appetizers came out.....but our dinners never did. I am not at all confrontational, but after waiting over an hour and a half I finally got up and asked where our meals were. The lady at the front printed my receipt and said "this is what we have for you." On that receipt were our appetizers and nothing more. They dug through their pile of slips and found my order, clearly noting there were many other items that we never got. I'd like to mention that it was completely dead int the restaurant - there were only two other tables seated while we were there. Our waiter never came and checked on us, or I would've had the opportunity to ask about our meals. She offered to make our meals, but at this point I didn't want to spend another penny in her restaurant. I paid for my appetizers and took my children elsewhere. It's completely unacceptable to me that our waiter never checked on us, and our meals were never made. I will never go back.

I should have stayed home with a bag of Minute Rice. They spend more on the decor than the food itself, and WTF? Where have all the Japanese gone????
(1)Lauren M.
"That was a nice time." "Yea, but I'm still..." "HUNGRY? ME TOO!" And so began the night of two dinners. We went here twice--the second time, we were very disappointed. We had just spent a decent amount of money and were still hungry! The sushi was okay, but nothing spectacular. The decor is dated and could use some refreshing. The service can be pretty mediocre. The BYOB part of it is cool, but I think there are definitely better sushi options in Providence and North Providence.
(3)Michael M.
The sushi is inexpensive and delicious. They have a BYOB policy and a dining area where you can sit on the round with your shoes removed. Easily the best sushi restaurant in the RI/Southern MA area.
(5)Eric C.
This is one of Providence's middle of the road type Japanese places. Obviously catering towards the college population. They have a generic list of sushi and sashimi. Their stuff ain't bad but really nothing stands out. I think that Ran Zan on Hope Street has fresher food and more authentic Japanese cuisine. If you're looking for a quick bite and you aren't looking for the real deal, then this is a perfectly fine place to go on Wickenden! Parking is always a hassle but is available on the street if you can find any!
(3)Shari W.
The last time we were at Tokyo the service was terrible, so we started to look for other sushi on the east side. But didn't find anything we liked any better. Last night we went back to Tokyo for the first time in about 9 months and had a much better experience. The sushi is good there. Very good. The service was much better than the past few times. I am glad we went back. I missed it.
(4)Sasanek ..
I have recently picked up some sushi, and the fish tasted fresh and delicious - but weird smell is still lingering.
(3)Andria T.
This is my go-to sushi joint, for several reasons: 1. The sushi is always fresh and delicious 2. The variety of specialty rolls is fun and there are a ton of options 3. I've never had to wait for a table because the space is pretty big 4. BYOB 5. Excellent prices I can go here, eat my body weight in sushi and still not break the bank--and that's how I like it. I'm not going to debate 'authenticity' or any other words that go hand-in-hand with restaurants that serve non-American cuisine. The sushi at Tokyo tastes good to me, and I am happy to eat it. Maybe it's just like dining in actual Tokyo, I have no clue, I've never been. In actual Tokyo, I can guarantee they don't have a delicious Cranston roll, which is among my favorites. The service here is always prompt and with zero fuss. The servers are polite and deferential. The food tastes good. That's all I really need.
(4)Jenn M.
The service here is terrible. We went on a Friday night and waited an hour and a half for food. Saki was cold on numerous rounds. When we finally got our food, the order wasn't even correct. We ordered a boat of sushi and we definately regretted our thee hour tour by the end of the night... Providence has so many better sushi options!
(1)Kevin M.
Awesome price and very good food. The sushi was fresh and very flavorful. I also ordered the shrimp fried rice which was very tasty! I recommend and will come back.
(4)Heather V.
I've been coming here for years now and it has never gotten better but also never gotten worse. The sushi is great, the service is fast but most of the restaurant except for the special room in the back are run down. Broken tiles on the floor, booths and tables that wobble (more then one), I just get a very unclean feeling in general (especially the bathroom). I know it is an older building but some regular maintenance is seriously needed. You can watch the sushi chef prepare food but there is too much clutter in there space. If you are lucky enough to get a good seat you experience will be OK but it is nothing magical. The price is fair and it is BYOB. I just get too many mixed feelings from this place to say it is good or bad. I might just be waiting for one extreamly intollerable experience to finally call it quits.
(3)Adam C.
I had a pretty terrible experience eating here. I hope for the restaurant's sake it was just an off night. Service was as bad as it gets. It was our waiter's first night on the job so I guess I have to take it easy, but I don't think he was the main problem. The problem for me was he brought out a boat of only the sushi rolls I ordered, making my friend wait 30 minutes for the sashimi he ordered. There's just no excuse for that, especially when the place is not busy at all. Not fun. I found the quality of food to be mediocre, not impressive at all. We were even charged an extra item we hadn't even ordered. The restaurant itself could use a makeover too, with dirty walls and bad paint job. The only redeeming quality may be BYOB. That's right folks, bring your own alcohol and drink it with the hopes of forgetting how miserable service is here.
(1)Jake B.
First off, if you're planning on coming here, you've got to realize that the service is pretty bad. It's kind of like most of the waiters have spent their entire lives trapped in the Jumanji jungle and they got dice-rolled out of there to immediately have to work a shift. The communication is just not there. But, the sushi is cheap and good, and you can bring a few 30 racks and go HAM on that joint. For that, it's totally worth it.
(3)Rob F.
I've been going to Tokyo for years. 90 percent of the time it's for lunch. I've waited in too many long lines at night. I order shrimp and vegetable tempura, ton katsu, deep fried chicken with sweet soy sauce and saki, udon soup, and lots of maki. I always get California rolls, Boston maki with salmon and avocado, tekka with tuna and avocado, hamachi, unagi, and tempura lobster. Maki is 50 percent bigger than it is other places. A roll cut in six pieces, you have to stretch your jaw for some of them. Most of the rolls are $4.50 to $5.50. Very reasonable and fresh. Food is good. Service and atmosphere can be good or bad depending. I've seen the place full of Brown University students with vodka and tequila bottles clearly intoxicated yelling and screaming. The side room was full of drunk girls in party dresses celebrating someone's birthday one night and the walls were shaking. It can be very loud and unruly. Service can be good or you might get cold soup, and have to wait ten minutes to see your waiter again. You have to ask for another cup of tea any you'll probably wait for it. You'll wait for dinner if they are busy. They have a tiny kitchen. I should mention that I brought my friend and his wife there. His wife saw the server bringing un eaten rice from the table back into the kitchen and they dumped it back into the cooker. They said they would never eat there again. I don't get rice as a side! How different is that from every other restaurant re serving uneaten bread? Do you think they toss the rolls you leave in your basket out? Rice is a bit more of a gross out though.
(3)Len L.
We stopped our weekly stop at the restaurant about 18 months ago. We decided to give it another chance tonight. As of tonight little has changed food wise. Great new floor the other floor was scabby. See you in another 12 months!
(2)Ali W.
Very affordable - great sushi overall. The service is ok.. Seems like a bunch of nice college kids just trying to make a few bucks :-) BYOB! Yay! They have some really interesting sushi choices and the atmosphere is casual and no-fuss. Don't waste time or stomach space with apps - just get down to business with the good stuff.
(4)Janette K.
Best sushi I have had in New England. Make sure to get rolls from the specials posted on the wall. The spicy miso soup, sexy Argentinian and the angel roll are the best. Although the service can be spotty at some times, the food is certainly worth it.
(5)Tom K.
Excellent sushi. BYOB. There are a few liquor stores a couple streets over. Bring some friends and have fun. The food is fresh and inexpensive. The atmosphere is casual and friendly.
(4)Harris R.
Incredibly underwhelming sushi. BYOB. The fish had all been shredded. I would recommend Haruki's or Sakura right down the street.
(2)Mike P.
What can I say about this place, well, only negative things I suppose. Had reservations made at 7 on a Saturday night, walk in and we do get the reservation, so that was good. It took 20 minutes before the server came to our table, and the only reason they came was because a person at the table next to us got up to get someone, as they were waiting for someone before we even got there. One couple at our table asked for glasses for their byob they brought. I order the chicken full dinner to get an app and dessert with it. Took about 10 minutes for the appetizers to come out, so that was not bad, but mind you it is about 7:30 and only getting apps, so it's already slow. They brought us an extra app, but they said to keep it so they made a mistake but not that bad. Also, not glasses yet for the byob. Another 15 minutes and we start to get the dinners, a big bowl of udon, and a yellow water chicken teriyaki, see my picture. He chicken was not worth the money, but I suffered through it as I was starving. Asked for the glasses again for byob and nothing yet. About another 10 minutes go by and we get up to get the glasses. Finally around 8:20 the sushi starts to come out, which many people at the table ordered for dinner. Also, our sushi came out before the sushi of the table next to us, who got there and orders before us, very sad. Some of the sushi looked good, a few rolls were pretty average and nothing special, fish was a dull color, not very bright which was off putting. But people are eating as we are starving. We also ask for soy dishes to pour some soy sauce in, asked about 3 times before the table next to us got up and grabbed some bowls for us an them. So it is a little past 9 now and we get the bill. Never received my dessert, but I was not even going to try to get one after the night we had. We get the money ready, paying about $50 in cash, and $60 split differently on 3 credit cards. The server goes over how much to put on each card as we wrote down the card name with the amount to be charged on the back of the receipt. A different person comes back with the entire $110 dinner split evenly on all 3 cards. Ughhhhhhhh, really, were they thinking we left a 50% tip? Well after another 10 minutes it gets resolved and they voided that sale and charged the correct amounts. Also, I should mention, throughout the entire time, a group of what looked like high school kids was a few tables down drinking and being obnoxiously loud and just acting like idiots. We could barely hear each other talking and had to tell across the table to say anything. So there is my review. My first and last time eating here. The other table said they never had service like this as well as other people at my table, but that is not changing my mind. Service was terrible, my chicken was gross, and the sushi looked average. I will not e coming back here again. Also their bathroom was gross, had big splashes of piss on the seat for the entire time we were there.

I have eaten at Tokyo Restaurant twice and have been impressed with the quality of the sushi both times. This is not a fancy establishment, but the food is fresh and good and the price is right. Tonight, Tokyo went above and beyond by replacing an item that I had marked incorrectly on the sushi list with what I had intended to order. I wan't sure if I had ordered incorrectly or if someone else had made a mistake so I asked my server to check the order sheet - even after discovering that I had made the mistake he checked with the owner and offered to replace the item with what I had wanted in the first place. Very gracious, thank you!
(5)Sandro B.
This used to be one of my favorite spots in providence but lately it's been on a steep decline. The service is terrible and so is the atmosphere, they have a lot of sushi options but you'ed be lucky to get your whole order. This isn't worth the money the time or the trip. I'd try haruki east on wayland way before I'd come back here again. If they keep it this way I'd be surprised to see them make it another year.
(1)Alice S.
If you're looking for some good sushi that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg, Tokyo is the place to go. They have a huge selection of sushi, as well as other full entrees. I'll be honest, I have no idea what is the actual menu because I always order the same thing...for the most part (unagi, spicy tuna, california, boston, wickeneden, and a few others; oh and don't forget the edamame and miso soup!). Another great reason to come here, they are BYOB! Whats better than that?! We always do birthday parties here because everyone can find something they like and everyone can bring their own drinks so we can spend that money at the bar later! The only thing you have to worry about when your with a large group is the fact that they put the rolls on the large sushi boats, so make sure you remember to have a slip for every couple of people, or your sushi might be with the people down on the opposite side of the room. If you are headed there, they can get very busy on the weekends, especially if said birthday party is taking place, or if there are any other large groups. But you can make reservations if you have a party of 6 or more. (If you do have a large group, you have two options...tables, or the semi-private dining room with traditional asian floor mat seating - so be sure to specify which you prefer.)
(4)Brian R.
This restaurant is definitely not fancy but the food is good. Service is just ok but again it's not fancy so the service is what you would expect. It is also very inexpensive
(4)Kerry S.
Some of the best sushi ive ever had at a very reasonable price. Its byob as well, which makes it a great, affordable dinner out!

One host that was in this evening was actually helpful but the food was terrible. Ordered take-out and expected at least 8 pieces got 5 not placed in presentable manner. If I pay over $8 for a roll a sushi I expect at least 8 pieces. The "spicy tuna" quotations needed because it wasn't spicy or tasted like tuna, the mystery meat that is considered tuna was dry and un flavorful. Eating a piece of the the only thing I could taste was the rice, seaweed wrap, and whatever sauce they decided to throw in there even with the wasabi and ginger added on top still disappointing! I had to add soy sauce to it and I'm a strong believer in not adding soy sauce to my sushi because it should be fine alone or with wasabi and ginger, but it was still not satisfying. Definitely not worth the money I'd pay the same amount or more at a different place than go here again.

I take certain clients here for lunch. It's quiet, upscale and authentic. They Sushi selection is tremendous and they were the first Sushi restaurant to get it right in RI over 15 years ago. Parking is tough, prices are good and it's a can't miss.

LOve it here! Sad to see some of my (yelp)pals didn't like it as much. I've been coming here for like 20 years and I always get awesome tasty sushi. I get the salmon, the Boston roll, the California roll, and this time we had the Vegas roll with spicy tuna. Top notch, my friends were impressed and I was ever the hero. This time I had their spicy fried rice and it was to die for! It's BYOB so next time the drinks are on me. The tutomi room is kind of out dated but its still fun, sitting in that classic Japanese style, the joints aren't the same as they used to be, but next time when I bring the booze I won't notice!

Tokyo is my favorite sushi place in PVD. The environment is not fancy so if that is what you are liking for this is not the place but if you are looking for great sushi at a very reasonable price Tokyo is a great choice. It is byob so plan accordingly. My favorites are the hot roll, salmon nigiri and the tomago. So in summery great food, byob in a very casual environment.

I'm sushi obsessed and have eaten here maybe a couple dozen times. Both in large parties of 20+ or by myself. I've never had bad service or food. It's BYOB, right on wickenden st and have good prices. There's a little liquor store right around the corner that gives great liquor and wine recommendations.

I have eaten here many times in the past. I stopped going here as the décor was becoming unbearable. Recently, they have made some improvements to the flooring and bathrooms. However, a fresh coat of paint on the walls would do wonders. Aside from the décor and atmosphere, if you are looking for good sushi at a reasonable price this place is just right. The spicy tuna is the very best around. I have eaten in most every spot in RI, and this roll is tops. Also, try the Venus roll, it is a spicy tuna roll, wrapped with tuna sashimi. The Canada roll is a spicy salmon roll topped with spicy tuna, excellent. The Ivory Roll is great, spicy hamachi topped with Hamachi sashimi. And the Ocean Roll, fresh chopped, tuna, hamachi and salmon rolled, then topped with a chopped of the trio. All reasonably priced. I normally go for lunch and service and food delivery is fast and attentive. If you are looking for sushi and not worried about atmosphere, you should try it here.

Never had bad sushi here, place is clean, staff is friendly, awesome place. Good for kids, not super expensive. Spicy Tuna roll is awesome here, not all mushy like most places, good for lunch or dinner, byob, just watch out for graduations at nearby colleges, when that's going on, it can be hard to get a table anywhere in this area.
(5)Audrey M.
Place is always good!! Get the HOT ROLL.. SOOO GOOD! It's the only sushi roll I'll ever get there. Miso soup is always good. Cool ambiance getting to sit on the floor. It's a BYOB. There's a liqueur store close by.

Tokyo is one of the better sushi restaurants I've been to in Providence, but that's not saying much unfortunately. A stone throw away from where I live, Tokyo serves decent sushi at moderate prices. I recommend the Spicy Lobster Roll as particularly good. It's usually not too busy especially if you go early in the evening.

Highly suggest their Crazy Roll (shrimp tempura-rice-avacado-tobiko.....)this one roll has turned many people I know into sushi lovers. Blackened tuna and salmon sushi delicious and the miso soup. BYOB is a nice touch too. Many times I have called in lunch orders to pick up and it is always ready when I arrive. Must try of you are in providence.

I was incredibly dissapointed in the overall experience here especially as this used to be one of my favorite stops for sushi. First off is there was an overall oder through the restaurant that reminded me of a truck stop restroom. The service was horrible even though it was not busy, the waiters did not know the food or the menu, never offered refills on the drinks and never brought the miso soup that came with the meals. The sushi was flavorless and mushy which is a good sign that it was all frozen. The octopus was also bad and had a stronger taste then mackeral. The one restroom they have was clean but no papertowels or way to dry your hands and after telling the staff they completely disregarded it. The table was dirty and the paper napkons were sticking to the table from whatever had been cleaned off from the last guests. The prices are extremely cheap, a sushi/sashimi combination boat for two people is only $35 but that is because everything is frozen and low quality. I will definetly not be visiting this restaurant again.

If you want amazing fresh tasting sushi..come here. If you want decent service and a clean put together atmosphere .. don't. Simple as that.

I'm not sure how it's possible I have not yet written a review for Tokyo Restaurant. But, here we go! This is one of my all time favorite restaurants in Providence. I've been dining her since as long as I've lived here, almost 10 years now. I can't believe I'm seeing 1 and 2 star reviews for this place. It may not tickle everyone's fancy. It's not the nicest place around town as far as ambiance and decor. The wait staff aren't generally overly enthusiastic or friendly, but it sure beats the hell out of Sakura (see my review.) They offer a great selection of fresh sushi. There always seem to be tons of specials as well. My all time favorite is the crazy roll - I salivate just thinking about it. I've never once had a bad experience here. There always seems to be plenty of patrons dining whether it be for an early/late lunch or dinner. In fact, many times when I've gone for dinner, I've had a decent wait for a table. Bonus: BYOB.
(4)Robert S.
First of all... BYOB. Definitely a plus. Why not save some money and bring a nice bottle of sake to make the meal complete. The food is definitely good. My mind wasn't blown, but I really enjoyed it when I went...although I didn't sit on the floor so maybe I missed out on the full experience. If you're not grossed out by spindly legs sticking out each every way, get the spider roll. So worth it. The selection of rolls are pretty standard, but encompass a large selection, which I enjoy. Just please don't be loud and obnoxious when you're here... Some people do that occasionally. Inside voices children. Come on down.

We go to tokyo every year as the anniversary of a sushi meetup group. Each year gets a little worse. This year was so bad we will mever go back. There were 12 of us and we had made a reservation for sushi. It took 2.5 hrs for 2\3s of us to get most of out food. No one got everything they ordered. The waiter was new so we excused him of course but an experienced brought out a dish amd we asked what it was he said "I don't know" and we had to tell him to go find out. The manager never addressed us and she was taking payments at the end. She was terrible. She did not take care of anyone appropriately and pulled the sushi chef to ring people out. When a woman asked if her. Order of sushi was almost done the manager lied and said yes its coming out soon. The chef said he had to go finish orders and the manager told him to continue at the register. Worst experience at a restaurant ever. I ordered a kobe meal it was terrible amd overly priced. The people that did get their sushi were happy with it but I was not worth the time and stress. None of us will ever return. Whomever owns the restaurant to fire the manager and start over. It used to be great. Such a waste.

I don't know if it's because of where, when, or how I grew up, but I never had what are considered some pretty common foods when I was a kid. I seriously had Chinese food maybe twice in my life. Going out to eat in my family generally meant J&D's pizza, Morin's Diner, or for a really special occasion Twin Oaks. Prince Spaghetti was about as ethnic as it got in our house. So the point is I didn't have sushi until I was out of college and in my mid-twenties. I didn't even really know what it was aside from something the rich girl ate in The Breakfast Club. The first time I had sushi was at Tokyo. I loved the sushi. I hated sitting on the floor. Having had more than my fair share of sushi since then, I can still say Tokyo is good. In fact, if you named the three sushi places in the immediate area (Tokyo, Sakura, and Haruki) I'd be very hard pressed to rank them. Maybe I'm not enough of a connoisseur, but they're all good. Like most sushitoriums, they have a list of rolls you can order and share. Many of these are standards, a few are their own house creations. They tend to have a few specials written on a board you need to remember to check when you come in. Everything is good. One room has tables lower than most coffee tables and no chairs. You're supposed to sit on the floor here. For some reason, ladies go crazy for this nonsense. It's insanely uncomfortable, but dudes... do yourself a favor and put up with it on your date. Thank me later when you're making out. Unless you're manly enough that you can sit in a chair like an adult and don't have to pretend to be cultured to impress her. But lets face it, you're at a sushi restaurant on the East Side of Providence - what are the chances of that?
(4)Jeffrey H.
Tokyo is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Providence, though I think it's second place to Haruki east. In some ways, though, it has advantages. Having been here several times, I've always been happy with the food, and almost always happy with the service. Now some people may not care, but for someone who likes to save money, the following is important: BYOB! Their's a liquor store around the corner where you can buy alcoholic beverages (I recommend Junmai "Living Jewel" sake if you like that sort of thing), and at Tokyo they'll bring glasses and serve it for you. I think the prices of food at Tokyo are generally slightly less than some other sushi places in the area, and you certainly get more than what you pay for as far as quality. In summary, if you're trying to impress a date with fine dining, you may want to consider another restaurant, but if you're going out with friends and want good food and drinks without spending a ton of money, Tokyo could be your best bet.
(4)Danny C.
Since there aren't as many Japanese restaurant choices in Providence, I would say that Tokyo would be one of the better ones that some pretty bad ones.. Their food is overall okay, I think the rolls are generally better than their entree menus They have a pretty big selection of rolls to choose from, so read over that roll slip menu with fair amount of detail because you might find one of your rolls for the day! In terms of alcohol, if you bring in your own alcohol, you can enjoy the meal with them-

Going to be a short review. I didn't eat the food. I walked in and the smell was so overpoweringly BAD that I had to walk right back out! It smelled like bad fish had been sweltering in a hot dumpster on Friday afternoon! No thanks!

Went there on a recent Saturday night with my husband. Were seated right away and it didn't seem busy. Sashimi app and seaweed salad were both good. We got a Winter roll, and an Italy roll, which were both amazing. Also, you can never go wrong with a yam roll. The place is not fancy, and caters to college kids, Wickenden st hipsters and BYOB lovers such as ourselves. It is not the best sushi place in Providence, but it is also not pretentious as others like 10 Steak and Sushi is.
(3)Amanda P.
I took a star away because the sushi didn't seem as fresh this time around. Granted it was a Tuesday. Maybe I should come back when they have a little more business coming through. Still love that it is BYOB.
(3)Alaina G.
Eh. I'm usually not this rough on sushi - I love sushi, all forms - but Tokyo just didn't do it for me. For me, it wasn't one particular thing but rather a few little annoyances... 1) They forgot one of our rolls (and seemed generally confused by our questions) 2) They use Windex on the tables, and the smell made our meal really unappetizing 3) It felt a little skuzzy inside - something about the booths and menus just felt dirty 3) I find them more costly than necessary given the quality I will say this - if Sakura wasn't right across the street (and cheaper, and better), then this would have gotten more stars. #1stWorldSushiProblems : )

Here's the deal with Tokyo -- you go there for the cooked entrees, the amazingly cheap and tasty lunch specials, and for the fast and attentive service. Those entrees come either a la carte (just the entree), or as part of a meal including a nice appetizer, some of the best miso in town, and ice cream for dessert. I'm all about the Ahiru for the appetizer. The sushi is only okay, but for me that doesn't downgrade the 5 stars. This isn't a sushi house, it's a restaurant. That said, I have had zero problems with the quality of their Tekka, Sake, and Unagi rolls -- which make up the mainstay of my sushi diet. Still, if you want to go all sushi, you're probably better off down the street at Sakura, or across town on the East Side. I have eaten massive amounts of Japanese food in Rhode Island over the years, cooked and otherwise, so I like to think I have a clue here. Tokyo isn't ambiance. It's not a sushi house. What it is is one of the last truly affordable nice nights out for Japanese in RI, and an *extremely* affordable tasty lunch. And for the folks who gave them a crappy rating because they are BYOB? For god's sakes do some research before you go somewhere, and don't blame them for the liquor laws in Rhode Island of all places.

I went to Tokyo on a Saturday afternoon with a group of eight and had a so-so experience. The food itself (I had a rainbow roll and a hamachi roll) was fine, but the service left a lot to be desired. For starters, there were three different menus. Let's edit and streamline this, folks. Our waiter was downright sullen. He seemed sort of irritated by our presence, and never came back to the table to check on us or refill our water glasses. Our meals came out at all different times, which is a terrific way to send me from mildly annoyed to totally bananas. At least ten minutes passed between when the first and last of our group received their meals. The prices would have been reasonable if not for the bad service and the graffiti all over the bathroom walls. (Seriously, shout-out to "SUSHI THURSDAY 4-EVA!") This is a restaurant, not a high school locker room. Talk about mailing it in. On the plus side, however, it's BYOB.

The food is delicious, but the atmosphere is not. It's very loud and noisy, it looks totally unfinished with hand drawn signs and poor lightning. When I went with a friend, it took pretty long to order and when we got our dishes, we only got two out of three and had to wait another 5 min or so to get the other dish. Lame! Best part was when we paid, both debit. I got charged twice (they ran my card twice). That should not happen, never, ever. So it's relatively cheap, both in price and performance. I probably won't come back.

I got a gift card for Tokyo for 50 bucks. Before I even got seated, I'd ask the host , if they take gift certificates. "The host said no rudely" I asked why " Host said everyone that comes here never tip well." I've ask to see the manager " Hosted again said, my manger is not here". I said okay, won't be dining here and BTW I am a very good tipper. I walked out and will never come back to this place again.

I want to start off by saying that Tokyo Restaurant probably receives a lot of my sushi money, because, to be quite honest, they're really good. HOWEVER, today was a completely different story. This is my first time back since winter break and so I decided to bring my friend to order some sushi. To my surprise, our sushi came out really quickly - within a few minutes of our order; it's unusual because I usually wait about ten minutes just for mine. When I got home, I realized the food was spoiled - like they made it 5 hours before I got there. I called them and they told me that they'd make the order again if I could bring it back to them. Since I was busy, I told them that I'll be there in twenty minutes and if they could have it ready before I got there. They waited until I got there to make the sushi; already stretched on time, I asked if I could get a refund instead. They took about ten minutes to realize they would need the manager; I had to inquire about what was happening in order for them to tell me this vital piece of information. They wanted me to wait for the manager (which they said he'd call me as soon as he got to the restaurant, which is confusing because it seemed like they wanted me to stay); frustrated, I left the restaurant. I called them a few minutes later (after calming down) and said that that was probably the worst customer experience I have ever received and as a result I will no longer be eating there ever again. Instead of apologizing or something a typical host/cashier would do at a regular customer, one of the employees told me I called them too much and to never call them again. I called them twice: one to tell them their product was bad and the call I made to them. Basically, check your food. But definitely check your staff.

I used to eat here once a week because of the BYOB and great sushi. However, the service has gradually gotten worse and worse. You'd think that when they see a regular customer that tips VERY well, they'd give them excellent service, right? Think again. We went for my good friend's 21st birthday. We made a 9pm reservation for 12 to sit on the floor. They refused to sit us at a table with chairs even though it was the middle of the week and the place was empty. The waiters hounded our table the entire time, RUSHING us out of there, even though they were supposedly open until 11pm. They presented us with the check while we were still eating. I tried to explain to the waiter that this was not acceptable, and very un-hospitable for a special occasion dinner...but he could not understand a word that I said. This worried me more. I was glad that I didn't bring my friend with a shellfish allergy...the waiter probably wouldn't have understood that request either. So we interrupted our dinner to divvy up the tab. Then they proceeded to clear our plates and glasses while we were still eating, and I'm pretty sure my face was purple at that point. It was a shame that they added the gratuity onto the check. These fellows didn't deserve a penny. My roommate and I shared a roll that we had eaten their previously, and were totally SKIMPED on the portion. It was supposed to be an 8 piece special roll. We were only served 5. At that point, I was so tired of complaining to the waiter that we didn't mention anything and tried to enjoy the meal. On the way out, I told the waiters that I was a regular customer and would not be returning. With a stoic expression, one said "thank you, have a good night." Oh really now? To top it all off, my roommate and I had TERRIBLE migraine headaches the following morning...definitely a symptom of eating bad salmon. Don't even give this place a shot. There are way better sushi places in this city.
