Ordered a classic burger and it was so tasteless. Chili fries were a brown version of italian ragu not good at all, really dry. The mushroom burger was so dry I have no idea how I was able to swallow it, so nasty. Never again would I consider this place. What a joke of burgers.

Just like Tommy's Pizza, this is another place I brag about to out-of-town friends. I'm so darn proud of the NE Weiner (and coffee milk) thing lol The weiners are delicious and so are the fries. Just order a small fry because a small is very large! I hate the parking because it's on the street and very limited, but that's ok. I've called and asked to place an order to be picked up. I guess it depends on whose working on whether or not you can do that as I've been told ok and I've been told no. I've also heard that they now deliver, but I'm not experienced with that.

I went on a Yelp hiatus but my recent experience at New York System reeled me back in. My coworkers found their food satisfactory but I'm writing because of Jason who works there. He was articulate, patient, and just the kind of person you want to deal with over the phone. I'm a delivery fiend and I just wish every transaction was so seamless! Top notch customer service.

WIEN-AHHHHHH'S!!!!!!!!! My friends and I frequent Patrick's Pub across the street and we stay until they close...........and we get hungry........FOR WIENERS. The guys here are AWESOME. They're so friendly and they always let us in to use the restroom even after the inside is closed! The food is so good. I could live off their wieners and cheese fries. I've heard marvelous things about the coffee milk as well. I'll give it a try next time!

NY System Wiener... It's a consummate quirky classic Rhode Island idea (like Dels) that conjures up impure thoughts of bad pornography. There really isn't much about this place that is extraordinary..but the meat sauce and onions are the key. They are all over the PVD area...the analogy is sort of like Ted's hot dogs in Buffalo. Uniquely RI. The concept actually reaches the South County beaches as well (although not under the NY name)...

After seeing this on food network I couldn't wait to eat here coming from new York were you can het a dog just about anywhere I walked in an this place was dirty and old but some places like these turn out to be gems this was the worst thing I have ever had took one bite and spit it out they raved about something called coffee milk an it's just what it sounds like 99% milk 1% coffee this was just as bad do your self a favor if you wanna try it for your self cool but order only a bite full you won't be able to eat more than that !

I started coming here with my father when I was 9-10 years old, I thought they were amazing then and all these years later...I still do. I feel that anyone who gives them a bad review because of what it looks like, well, they don't deserve these gifts from heaven. A lot of people suggest going late at night after a few but I also suggest going on a rainy/snowy day. The windows will be steamed up and outside it might be miserable but get a couple NY System hotdogs, a cup of coffee, talk to the guy behind the counter about the Sox/Patriots and all will seem right with the world. The word institution is often overused but this place truly is a Providence institution. When I move back from sunny and all too happy/friendly, Sarasota, Florida, the first thing I'll do (after beeping, screaming an obscenity and giving the finger to a guy that will no doubt cut me off on Smith Hill) is come here. This place makes gritty and dirty seem beautiful and I love it.
(5)

If you're going to get hot wieners, this is the place to get them in Providence. Like someone else noticed, it's a little grimy, but that's because it's an old restaurant, with 2-3 older guys working behind the counter sporting faded Navy tattoos and lots of character. The wieners are good and the coffee milk is their own special recipe. Ask them about other stuff to do in Rhode Island and you will get typical Rhode Island instructions to go somewhere that such-and-such establishment *used* to be. Newspaper clippings featuring the shop and other local touches decorate the walls. You couldn't get a better distillation of the Rhody experience.

It would be difficult to tell you that this place is amazing and fun and trendy and all that. It isn't. What it is, is delicious hot weiners. Not hog dogs...weiners. Small delicious bites of heaven on a toasted bun with or without all the fixins. I took my husband here because he had never been... and he was a little surprised. True, when you walk in it looks like 1972, but hey, that is the vibe. The people here all know the score and there is no special treatment for newcomers. He ordered 2 weiners and I'm pretty sure he was surprised by how much he liked them. Go here for the nostalgia, go because its close to downtown...but don't go looking for a scene. Unless its Pulp Fiction style....

I love how late this place is open and I find it more convenient to get to than other hot wiener spots. Olneyville New York System is too out of the way and the other good one is way out on Cranston Street. I don't know about you but I don't feel comfortable hanging out on Cranston Street late at night on a weekend. That's not to say this place wins by default. This place has wieners that are on par with those places. I like the Classic New England feel of the place and every time I've been there the staff is usually pretty good for some light conversation. The food is made to order and they have a full menu of typical diner food at pretty good prices. Their wieners have a nice flavor to them, however I think their meat sauce could use a little something extra. I usually put a little black pepper on mine. A word of advice to out-of-towners (I'm not from Rhode Island), Rhode Islanders are gruff and can come off a little rude, but they are generally nice and have good hearts. Once you present yourself as friendly (please and thank yous folks!) you'll see that. Plus these guys deal with drunks, and worst drunk college students, so cut them a little slack. Overall I consider this to be a great spot to end the night for some late night "EAT".
(4)
Mark S.
Very inconsistent. As another reviewer wrote, they don't have the same turnaround as other joints so you're likely to get an old wiener. They also don't use the legit type dogs that they cut themselves. Do yourself a favor and head to olneyville ny system. If you can't make it to O-ville this is a good late night drunk food stop.

I pass this place a few times a week, and had heard a lot about it, so figured it was worth a try... It's a total hole in the wall... there were 2 cute old men there, one behind the counter and the other at the counter, watching the Sox play... right after I ordered, they won! We were off to a good start. Let me also say that I (never having been there before) I ordered 2 "hot dogs; but was quickly corrected, what I wanted was 2 "weineys". Ha! So, they were very friendly, talking Sox pitching, and how they started the season off lousy, but they'll pull through, like they always do... I took my 2 weineys to go... 1 for my dog and 1 for me. Not bad, though I'm not sure what makes a stellar weiney... Pink's in LA has a line basically 24 hrs a day, but I never figured out why. At NY Systems, they charge $1.75/dog. How can you go wrong with that?
(3)
Lou G.
Seriously, this place is great. Not the cleanest, or healthiest - but there are no misconceptions about that. Staff is really friendly, the core staff having been there for YEARS. The food is great, and they have maintained the recipe for the entire time that I have been alive. They also serve a really cheap diner type breakfast, which is great. It's a serious Providence landmark, and whether you like it or not you've gotta at least experience it once if you are in/coming to Rhode Island.

I don't live in RI anymore. But every time I am home, I go get me some gaggers. And I use to work for a shop that served hot wieners when I was in high school. I can remember placing 10 of those steamed buns up my arms, filling them with the gravy meat sauce, onions, and dash of celery salt and mustard. I would go home smelling like these hot dogs so much, that even a shower couldn't help me out. But OMG, they are so eff-in good. So, after my brother's wedding a few weeks ago, some other displaced Rhode Islanders, an innocent bystander and myself drove all the way down from the reception site in Uxbridge, MA, to the original New York System for 3 all the way, of heaven, in our floor length bridesmaid dressers and tuxes. We are classy. It was like prom all over again. While we were there, there was some discussion about Olneyville being the original, and I sprouting that this was here first. Norman, the guy behind the counter, who told us he had been working there just as long as the youngest of our group had been living, was able to recant the notion of Onleyville being the original, and recited to us the whole history of everyone who has ever walked through the doors of this fine establishment. You don't get that service at Olneyville. Now, walking around in a bride's maid dress at one AM. on Smith Street isn't the brightest of ideas. But the place is quiet and not filled with the drunken douche bags leaving the club like Onleyville NYS. Plus, besides the heartburn that is sure to come afterwards, you get on original telling you bout the original, even if you didn't ask.

ONYS: Had it. Lost it. Gave up. Haven't had a good wiener here since 1978. They used to be one of the greats. They don't even make the list now. I've been twice in the last few years and I've been disappointed both times. It's unfortunate for them to coast on their reputation. Problems: 1. Old wieners. They don't get the fast turnaround like the really good wiener joints like Sam's and Olneyville. The wieners sit around for a long time and you're likely to get one that's either dried out, or mushy and decomposing. 2. Bad meat sauce. It may look like glop to you, but there is some mastery involved in making a good wiener sauce. ONYS meat sauce looks and tastes like slop. Shame on you! 3. Bitchy old man working there. I have mixed feelings. I mean, Rhode Islanders are rude. We can't help it. We're also friendly. It's hard to explain. The old counter guy by anyone else's measure is a cranky, miserable, hostile, rude fucking asshole. But by RI standards, he's a character and an icon. Classic Rhode Island-style wieners (forget about the "New York" in the name), topped with mustard, meat sauce, onions, and celery salt. I have to admit that I, a lowly West Coast transplant, would never have conceived of putting celery salt on a hot dog. I also have to admit that it totally works. These are good hot dogs, small enough that several make a meal. Bonus points for being open late.
(3)
Jeff W.
I will warn you right now. This is not for prissy, faint-hearted people. This is for when you want a fabulous greasy hot dog... No, make that 4 or maybe 6 or perhaps 8 hot dogs (they're small). And you have to get the chili sauce on them, and the salt and pepper and of course the onions. Without the chili and everything, well... forget it. This is Providence. This is real life baby. If you stop at the New York System late at night after a few pops, it's as if you died and went to heaven. Since I left the East Coast, we just don't have anything as gritty and wonderful as this in California. But then we don't shoot people in the streets either. God I love these hot dogs.
(4)

RI Classic--the original! Simple dive diner specializing in hot wieners (higher quality -- like $2-3/lb versus $1/lb for hot dog meat). Do NOT call them hot dogs. Get two wieners all the way with a coffee milk and you might pass for a Rhode Islander. Tip: game day special is 50 wieners for $75!
(4)
Lyd M.
Yes. Order some weiners "all the way" and you will be a happy camper. Tip: get them to go, eat them before you drive away, throw the bag in your back seat, and your car will smell scrumptious for days. They put napkins in the bag for the BAG, not for your hands. Love it here.

Pulled up a little after 10pm on a sunday night. Night cook was really sociable and laughed at the 20 minutes of hot wiener jokes we made. The wife and I got hot weiners, BLTs, and fries. I think if it was just a hot dog I would have been pissed but it much more the a dog it is topped with a mixture of toppings that make it a yummy snack or meal for you smaller folk . My friend got eggs homefries toast. we all loved our food and made the cook take a selfie with us as part of our memories of a fun week of following a band on tour the north east coast. Now it is my gift to you yelpers please tip this guys he is worth every dollar.

Wanted to satisfy the cravings of late night munchies and we had just been told about the Rhode Island original hot dog place. With about 3-4 locations now, New York System restaurants are scattered throughout nearby Providence, these locations just recently started accepting credit cards because, well, they're so GD cheap. I think I bought 6 hot dogs (when really a normal human being eats about 2) for under 15 bucks. Each hot dog is seemingly simple but the taste is surprisingly complex. If you're on a date, hopefully both of you are enjoying hot dogs so you have the mutual onion kiss but otherwise pack yourself a few breath mints and quickly brush your teeth at your earliest convenience! Most of these are located in kinda shady areas and parking is a little bit of an issue. But if you make it inside, enjoy a big snack packed in a small package

Weenies and Coffee Milk What is more of Rhody tradition then the late night stop at the wiener joint. Smith St is one of the original locations and they do it pretty well. Tip: 3 wieners with the works and an ice cold coffee milk Always delicious especially when your a little drunk. Only drawback your going to still taste them in the morning. This location is A OK. Thanks

This is one of my favorite late night foods after a long night of bar hopping. I moved to Massachusetts a long time ago and couldn't get these unless I visited Rhode Island. When I returned to RI for college, I quickly realized that these little treasures are even better after a long night.

Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted with an employee having a cigarette outside... I walked in immediately after him and unsure of what to expect after seeing him quickly putting on clear plastic gloves without washing his hands or making any eye contact with me. I notice that the restaurant was predominantly white and the senior citizens grouped together at the far end of the counter. I was not greeted or acknowledged. After sitting directly in the front of the counter, I ask to order.... But no one waited on me... Instead, I was told to hold up. I felt like I wasn't welcome here. After seeing two others walked in who was "also white" got served instantly before me, I knew this place wasn't for me or anyone looking for a family atmosphere restaurant. Don't believe everything you hear... Visit and see exactly what I mean. I lived in Smith Hill for over 25 years and been to this location about twice. This is my last time I assure you. I still rather go to Onleyville NY system to get my fix.
