I was thrilled to be recently introduced to Mi Guatemala by my girlfriend, who is of Guatemalan descent. First off - it helps to go with someone that understands Guatemalan food. Either way, the food is going to be delicious, but i'm not sure i would have been able to hone in on the most delicious options without some guidance. Case in point - they make a series of drinks i can only describe as fruit smoothie-like (can't recall the exact name, but you'll see the pictures on the menu) - they come in large goblet type glasses and could easily be featured as a dessert - they're that good. I ordered the Carne Adobada, which (it was explained to me) is a nice pork dish served w/ tortillas, guacamole, etc. It also came with salad and soup - the soup being a very interesting flavor that i could easily make a meal of. The service was warm and attentive, and the atmosphere is casual and welcoming. My only possible complaint was that the temperature in the dining room was a bit cooler than i would have liked, but with all the yummy food we were ingesting, that was quickly forgotten. Prices might seem high just looking at the menu, but then your plate arrives, and you realize just how much food you are being served. My leftovers actually accounted for not one, but two (albeit not huge) follow-up meals. Thank you, Mi Guatemala - i'm drooling just a bit thinking about my next visit.

I know this place when they star about 18 years ago. Im so proud of Mi Guatemala Restaurant. Its a lovely place, clean, good energy and the best food. the Mayan decoration, great services coold beers, maragritas, micheladas and Ron Zacapa makes this place original y sophisticated. Love this place with all my hart. Please visit, please support good business!

Best horchata in town, period. One of the few places in town to get papusas. There is a lot of variety here and I've enjoyed everything I've ordered -including the generious sized margaritas. -a bit of advice: the tacos are huge (and delicious).

This is fantastic, authentic Mexican food at a little hole-in-the-wall place. You know it's good Mexican food when most of the patrons are speaking Spanish! The neighborhood's a little sketch, but that should not dissuade you. We ordered the barbeque plate for two and definitely had to take food home. Meat was perfectly cooked. They also had some quite cheap alcoholic drinks advertised that I would be interested in trying next time!

Our group of five ate here for $50, with beers and everything! Great home-cooked Guatemalan at good portions and delicious. Good interior decoration- it's solid food for good prices.

This restaurant has given me quite the experience of having the most authentic spanish food I can get and its quite a memorable experience. When i first walked in, I can already tell this is the real deal spanish restaurant. Family owned, decor, all hispanic workers and customers. This is actually the type of restaurant I'd rather have rather than some big chained restaurant english speaker restaurant, I mean come on, lets face the reality. When I sat down, it was nice and cozy, our waitress came and didnt speak very well english, but she did bare with me. It is actually what i'd rather have when i walk into an authentic spanish restauarant, might sound weird but it's another way to prove that this place is legit. When I looked at the menu, WHOAAA very big pictures and such a big menu, I was eyeing other customer's dishes and I noticed the fish, but it was a little pricey, after leaving i kind of regretted not trying. But i did have the steak. I came with 3 of my buddies, we all ordered the same thing which was the steak with about 3 or 4 different sides. it seemed they cooked their steak well-done, which I dont usually have in steak places but having theirs was quite juicy and packed with flavor! the guys say the same thing. I also had some fresh warm tortillas and completely cleaned my plate with it. wow so increadible overall food and service was top notch, left full and spent about $16. I'd say its worth the price when having a big plate of authentic food.

The food here is absolutely phenomenal. Try the Chuchitos (mini Tamale-like ball) theyre soooooo goood. If youre an adventurous drinker like myself, try a bottle of Quezalteca Rosa de Jamaica (Hibiscus flavored liquer) , on the rocks with Lime. Its to die for and so strong it just might kill ya.

I used to be a casual diner at this place, but over time the quality of the food has gone down a lot. They are pricey for Guatemalan food. This place has a lot of health violations: golocalprov.com/news/25-… Go to Mi Ranchito on Westminster and you'll get better and cheaper food.

The food here is authentic and generally good. However, a majority of their dishes have tried meat. So if you are looking for something healthy, this is not the place. Service is decent but nothing to write home about. There it's plenty of seating and I have never had to wait to sit. This it's definitely a kid and family friendly restaurant.

Loved the food! We had tomalitos de chipilin with cheese, papusas, and tacos. All were very tasty, as were the complimentary chips with three different sauces. I love yucca and asked for a side portion which was cooked perfectly with a hint of cilantro. My glass of wine was overflowing. They don't stint on any of the portions here! The restaurant is very cute, the service good, prices excellent. I would definitely return.

I really enjoyed my experience here, straight up. Not only is the place incredibly super hole in the wall, but the food and services were straight up terrific. Our server was incredibly friendly, supportive even though I took half of a millennium trying to decide on which meal I wanted, and she was very helpful, patient and allowed me to sample some of the best fried fish I've ever had! Seriously, for $20, you get an ENTIRE fish, head to tail, with every part of the meat as succulent, juicy as you can imagine. The head was incredibly crunchy and delicious and for those of you adventurous daredevils, I strongly recommend eating it. I was not too impressed with the steak, felt a bit cold and overcooked when I was scrunging around other people's leftovers, but I cannot disagree with my dish. So, if nothing else, this place gets a 5-star for being the only restaurant in RI that sells fried whole fish with excellent service and a kickass starter/free chips and salsa. Food: 5 stars (fish) Price: 4 stars Service: 4 stars Ambiance: 3-4 stars

Dude, seriously? This place has been right down the street and I've never tried it? Amazing!!! We had platanos, fried fish and the beef dish that everyone posted in the pics that I can't pronounce. The food was fast, fresh, delicious, the waitress was nice and attentive, the sangria was delicious, no complaints inside. Outside is another story, scratched my new truck trying to squeeze out of their nightmare parking lot. :/ Park in the street to be safe!!

My first time eating Guatemalan food left a great impression. Mi Guatemala is a fabulous restaurant tucked away on Atwells Ave., but once you find it, get excited, because it's delicious. The chips and salsa were very good, especially since two types of salsa were offered. Both were relatively smooth and thin, and the spicy salsa was thankfully very spicy! I got a beef dish with a side salad and some rice. The rice wasn't anything incredible, but the salad was fine, and the beef was thin and very flavorful. It was also under $10! That was exciting to me. Service is friendly and attentive as well. I would definitely recommend Mi Guatemala.

Providence has some surprising breadth and depth in its variety of cuisine options, and Mi Guatemala is certainly a good example of this. Its unassuming location belies its fun ambiance -- a little kitschy, yes, but it has a fun look and style, sort of like a ranch, and totally unironic. The service is very sweet, and even though they don't speak much English, they are patient, attentive, and helpful. I ordered the carne adobada and a side of platanos. Before my food came out, we were given a platter of house-made tortilla chips with two sauces that were unexpectedly different. What I thought was salsa turned out to be something more like warm marinara sauce, and it was accompanied by a dark chili paste in oil (which the waitress warned was "very spicy" but which I found only mildly so). These two sauces worked nicely in concert. I also liked that they put a wheel of lime on my glass of water instead of the typical lemon. My carne adobada was pretty good -- well-done, as previous reviews have said, but also nicely seasoned, flavorful, and pretty tender, if a little dry. The rice and salad accompanying it were nothing special, but the plantains were terrific -- just the right ripeness, and perfectly sweet, charred, and yielding. We also got tortillas to accompany our entrees, and a small pot of pickled jalapenos that I enjoyed spooning over my rice. The bill for three people came out to around $15 each with tip, which I thought was pretty reasonable given how overstuffed and content I felt as I was leaving. Though there are some other Central/South American restaurants I like a little bit more in this area (El Rancho Grande, Los Andes, El Taconazo), Mi Guatemala is a good find, too, with a strong menu and pleasant service.

7/24/14. I went here as a plan B since Cuban Revolution is no more. I ordered Pollo Campesino y maduros y horchata. The pollo Campesino was unremarkable, rice and beans were 2 stars. I will give the Horchata 4 stars and definitely agree with another reviewer that said its the BEST they've had. I will go to Los Andes instead when I'm in the area again.
(2)Yana R.
Ugh I don't know why the reviews are as good as they are. Didn't like this place at all. Don't think I am ever coming back.

Best kept secret in Providence. The steak and chicken platter is one of my favorite meals around.
(5)Sarah C.
Authentic Guatemalan food and the ambiance to match! My husband and I split a giant dish that included pork, chicken, sausage, and carne asada (which was definitely the best part!). It also came with soup, salad, tortillas, guacamole, beans, and salsa, all for $29.99. What a deal! They give you tortilla chips and salsa to start as well.

Never had Guatemalan food. This is a good introduction.

Another great hole-in-the-wall Mexican/Guatemalan restaurant in Providence. This place has been decor and ambiance than most of the restaurants in the same market, and it has an extensive menu. A little overwhelming the first time around. I decided to try out the small plate options for my first experience, and I was pleasantly surprised by most of the dishes. In the end, I ordered way too much food and spent less than $10 on it. I do want to try out the traditional Guatemalan items that the waitress told us about, but they are a lot more money, so it's hard to make that transition. For me the deciding factor between a great and good latin restaurant is the chip & salsa, and while these weren't the best in the area (the salsa tasted a little like marinara sauce), they weren't the worst either. I will definitely have this place on my rotation, and I look forward to trying more of the menu

The food was good and the drinks were HUGE! Recommend it, but have to admit I liked Mi Ranchito slightly more food-wise. Plan on returning to both.

Tonight the meal was outstanding....as always, I get the Churrasquito, because to me, is the best dish they serve....great thin pieces of beef, nicely grilled, tasty and tender. Served with salad, rice and plantains (I ask for these instead of the tortillas). The chips are always nice, crispy, fresh and warm. This is a very consistent place and you will not be disappointed. The wait staff is always very pleasant. Other notable dishes here are the Roast Chicken and the Fried Fish (Mojarra frita - which is fried tilapia).

First vist to Mi Guatemala last night, brought there by a Guatemala friend so I was ready to be at least polite. Instead I was blown away by just about everything! We made an assorted "appetizer platter" and one chicken dinner. I loved it all, brought tons of food home, can't wait for seconds. Prices are great - even an oversized pour of pretty good wine for $4. Another big surprise was the "agua minerale con limone" - a huge goblet of mineral water with fresh lemon/lime juice and ice that was tangy, refreshing, and cleared the palate for all the other tastes. Loved the decor - the tables are works of art. Charmingly served by an attentive waitress - it was a lovely dinner.

Overall, the place felt very authentic and the server was sweet and attentive. I went because of the positive reviews but was pretty disappointed in the quality of the food, even though it did seem authentic. I tried a steak and pork dish based on the server's recommendation, and the meat was so low-quality that I barely ate it. The margaritas had a weird taste, and the sides like soup and salad were pretty basic- iceberg lettuce with ranch dressing. Prices were on the high end considering the low quality of ingredients.

Update: food is still good as always. (I still always get the same thing) but service has greatly improved. So stars for that! Service is horrible! As Mexican/ Guatemalan the only thing that has me coming back once in a blue moon for the past 5 yrs is the traditional breakfast. Your asked to seat yourself then wait at least 10 min for the menu. In my most resent visit, I asked for a box to go & the check, after 15 min, my server walked by with a blank look on her face after seeing us. she had completely forgot about us. It wasn't even busy! Food is good but only expect that. p.s horchatea is my favorite drink & the horchata here tastes like vanilla milk. If you rlly want a good horchata (I've pretty much ordered it every where where offered) try chilangos or garibaldi that are on the same ave

Excellent, so far the best for Latin American food in the area, I mean real latin american food !!!

This place makes me cry, I am pure Guatemalan and my abuelita has been dead for 20 years but she was an amazing cook. This food is 100% the real deal. I eat the food and close my eyes and I swear I can feel my abuelita comforting aura enveloping me. A lot like that scene in rattatoulli. This maybe my only biased review, but if you come down to it, if your seeking out delicious authentic Guatemalan food look no further.

I went here with a good friend of mine last weekend. There were people waiting outside so we were a bit hesitant about walking in. We were informed that the wait would be about 30 minutes and almost left. Thankfully we didn't! There is a reason that the line was out the door. Once we were seated we were greeted by a friendly waitress who brought out chips and dip for us. We ordered mixed drinks and to our surprise they were huge! almost as big as our heads and absolutely delicious. We both ordered entrees and small plates and absolutely everything we ate was amazingly delicious. We ended up ordering more food to take home with us. The owner of the restaurant came up to ask to ask how everything was which I thought was very sweet and made the experience even better. This restaurant is family owned and incredible!

One star deducted because the service was kinda slow (and we were like, one of two parties there). But, the food is really really good. We started off with the guac (get it), and the sweet plantains (get em). Then, I shared the garlic fish with a friend of mine - warning: it's a whole fish, bones, head, and all. It was delicious, but a bit of a project to eat (i"ve never had fish like this before). It's really good, no-frills, Latin food, and I hear the margaritas are also really good (though I didn't have any). I'd recommend splitting an entree with someone, especially if you're planning on ordering any appetizers!

This was my first time to Mi Guatemala in Providence. I grew up in RI, now live in NYC, and I am half Guatemalan. So that is a bit of back story to this review... I arrived after a bit of a tizzy finding this place. I wish my sisters would have just said "near RI college". I guess I don't remember Providence streets that well. In any case, my sisters and I went here with my mom and two nieces the friday before mother's day. My mother tends to like El Champin, but i wanted something new. The place is rather dark, but they really make it feel like guatemala with the queczals on the door and all over the decor...reminded me of my father's old car decals growing up in Newport, RI (uh, tough one to compete with in an irish neighborhood...i digress). Anyway, we ordered a few Parillada platters, tostadas, plantains, guacamole, a pina colada and a pitcher of Margaritas. The meats were seasoned well, and cooked well-done, as is the only way (in guatemala, anyway) and the variety and portions - plentiful. However, we didn't like one of their sausage varieties. All of us agreed it was not tasty, and my mom and sister are tried and true canivorous fiends. The soup starter looked uneventful, BUT boy were we in for a pleasant surprise - it was amazing! The guacamole was good. The plantains sweet and grilled to a perfect buttery exterior. The tostada starters easily won the best in show. They had chourizo and crema fresca or something like that on top and were seasoned well. Our waitress was accommodating and we had two kids, but, keeping in latin style...so did everyone else in the joint! She spoke some English but we appreciated the opportunity to use our native tongue, which goes far too often underutilized in Newport, RI. Over all, we all agreed that the pitcher lacked of tequila, and my mother's pina colada was sweet, not strong. Alas we needed to drive back to Newport anyway. I'd order a cervza next time. SO I def. recommend this place. The prices are so reasonable and the staff goes out of their way to accommodate. And the clincher - this place is frequented by mostly guatemalans/ latinos, with only some gringos. That usually is a good sign of authenticity and delivery in my book! And it proved true in this experience.

I usually enjoy it when I come to Mi Guatemala because the food is good, and the atmosphere is welcoming. I love the fresh chips and salsa that they set at each table, as these are quite addicting. I usually order the churasquito or the carne adobada, and this most recent visit, I ordered the marinated pork. It was tasty like I remember but a little dry. My companions loved the churasco. All the dishes come with rice and side salad. We also shared an order of sweet plantains w crema, which is cheap @ 1.99 and goes perfect with the meal. There are many dishes that they do right here and I will be back.

very good food. we got an appetizer and the combination plates

I love the pacayas! I had never had them before until here and now I'm hooked. The atmosphere is great with lots of authentic guatemalan decorations. I also think its just adorable how all the staff speaks Spanish and English as my boyfriend is guatemalan and I am American. One of my favorite places to eat in Rhode Island.

I've always been curious about Mi Guatemala and finally gave it a try. I liked both the food and the atmosphere. The menu is a few pages long. Since I don't read Spanish, I wasn't sure of the categories, but it seemed to me that there were both traditional dishes as well as some special ones. They have a liquor license, and I spied quite a few large, delicious-looking cocktails at surrounding tables. The waitress brought out what tasted like homemade tortilla chips with a normal and a chipotle salsa. I ordered the Pepita Chicken - chicken with pumpkin seeds - which was huge (I took 2/3 of it home). My boyfriend had the Adobo Pork (hope I spelled this right). Both our meals came with amazing, thick tortillas, a salad and rice; his also included black beans and a delicious soup. Our dishes were both under $15, and there were menu items under $10 as well. The restaurant was cozy and lively, with a lot of booths. Spanish soap operas played on a few high-mounted TVs. I'd definitely go back! (And next time I'm having one of those cocktails).
(4)Kathy S.
One of my favorites. The food is always great. Always service with a smile. Even thought I don't speak Spanish pointing at the menu pictures works just fine. 4 glasses of wine 2 meals and an appetizer. $34.00 How can you go wrong??? GREAT PLACE.
(5)John Z.
This is the best place to go for South American "Mexcian, Spanish" food ever. I used to live in in the area and didn't know about the place until I move to the East Side. I used to go to Mi Ranchito which was a big mistake. This place is superb. Just get the mixed grill. $ 26 for food for 4, and you're done for the night. Forget tortilla flats, this place has margaritas that will compare.
