I enjoyed Malachi's!!! I walked in and was immediately greeted. Upon looking around I noticed the fascinating art work some of which is done by the "most beautiful man." I could not stop looking!!! When asked, I redeemed my free iced coffee offer and got a delicious classic with meat! The iced coffee is not flavored with syrup (big thumbs up) but rather is brewed flavored coffee. Upon handing me the coffee the older gentleman asked me if the color was ok! This was a win for me and the color and coffee were great! Upon leaving he asked if I would wear a shirt if he gave me one? Of course I will, so I picked the communist one with the picture of the "most beautiful man." My experience was great and I will be back! ps I saw the so-called pretentious hipster dude. He was neither pretentious or a hipster!

This place is awesome. Very comfortable, great coffee and teas, and fast wifi. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Far better than the crowded spots on Wickendon and Thayer.

Almost missed it. I mean literally almost drove by - thank goodness for the chalkboard sign out front. It's good and bad, I guess to blend in. This shop definitely fits into the fabric of the residential homes and little stores around their neigborhood. Parking is on-street in front of the store. The reason for the five stars? Customer service and fresh coffee. I walked up to the door, read the hours and saw that they had closed at 3. Shucks!!! I needed a coffee SO bad and had wanted to try this place out since I had seen some buzz from fellow yelpers. So back in my car I go and this guy comes out and waves his arms at me. Puzzled and a little bit off-guard (jaded by all the crazy folk who've crossed my path) by the waving, I took a moment before opening the car to hear him out.Seems the hours SAY the shop is open 'til 3, but he usually sticks around until 5. He keeps the 3pm closing sign just in case he wants to skip out early - his honesty and friendly quirkarama lured me inside. He served up a piping hot, fresh large black cup of guatamalean coffee - one of my favorites for its well-balanced acidity and cocoa notes. In my haste to get into the shop, I left my wallet in the car and when I pulled out what money (and lint) I had in my pocket, realized I was about 20 cents short for my $2.50ish large. Feeling like a loser, I went to scoot our the door to get the balance + tip and the counter guy told me not to worry. Even though this whole deal took place in less than 6 minutes, I was so impressed with the willingness to please and the fresh, tasty coffee. I will definitely come on back for a little more java goodness - and maybe even one of the cookies with the "Pieces belonging to Reis".

This is the best coffee in Providence. Joe & Co are the kindest coffee brewers around. Coffee is always fresh and piping hot. I go out of my way to get coffee here. Thanks for an excellent product with great service Joe!
(5)Tessa Y.
Malachis is amazing!!! The staff is so nice and their food is great! They brew a strong cup of joe, that's for sure. It's a staple of providence, if your from out of town make sure to check malachis out.

Buy four coffees/lattes/whatever get one free = amazing deal! I love this place. Everyone (staff and customers) is super friendly. Joe is hilarious and Josh is ridiculous. Coffee is fine, although you can't doctor it yourself, since there is no milk/sugar bar. It's easy to find parking and fast to get coffee, since there is almost never a line. There is almost always space (and plugs!) to hang out and read or work.

Heard so many good things about this place, but unfortunately my experience was lackluster. A few weeks ago I was in the area and decided to give it a try. There was one man working, and I waited patiently while he made coffee and food for the woman in front of me. It's the type of place where they put your milk/whatever in the coffee for you. When the lady advised him that she prefers her coffee a bit lighter, he actually argued with her before adjusting it. It was rude. And then when I ordered, he made my coffee too light (probably a trickle effect) even though I asked for it darker. Whatever, it's all good. I ordered the vegan grilled cheese simply due to the amazing Yelp reviews... but it was a huge mistake. Never going that route again. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. The Daiya must have been a spicy version (?) because it was unpleasantly potent and spicy, not like the regular Daiya I've tried via my roommate. This could be me not knowing my vegan cheese, but I still feel like you should specify if the cheese has a particular flavor. They also used wayyy too much so it completely overpowered the bread it was on and it glued to the wrapper like a terrifying congealed plastic monster. Maybe it was my fault for ordering that grilled cheese, but I also felt uncomfortable asking for any type of customization regarding the coffee. If I come here again (which is doubtful) I'll just get my coffee black.

Just tried this today on my eternal quest for the perfect coffee shop to work in. Malachi's has come close! There's not a pretentious frilly vibe like so many other coffee shops. The coffee's not great (not bad, just not great), but the prices are fair and the food was tasty. Everyone seems to know the manager, and he and his daughter were jovially working the whole time. She was even super nice when I asked if she'd re-fill my nalgene for me! It's a laid-back vibe, and it's nice to get off of Thayer sometimes. Oh- and they have so many outlets! I hate it when I can't find an outlet in a coffee shop! Alsoooooo when you buy 4 coffees, you get your 5th free - that's nothing to sneeze at, I may actually be able to hold on to the card for that long!
(4)Marie S.
Staff is super friendly and the coffee beans are flavored instead of adding flavor via syrup, which is great. Cool little spot with nice outdoor seating and reasonable prices. Will come back again based on my first experience.
(4)Nic B.
Poorly lit and big on flavored coffee. Seems to have no public restroom. In this area you're much better off going to either L'Artisan in Wayland Square or Coffee Exchange on Wickenden. Both have better coffee and better atmosphere.
(2)Meltem G.
This a local coffee shop with no pretense of grandeur. They have great coffee and service -- and therefore, regular customers. It is a pleasure to watch people come and go and chat with the owners. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They explained everything patiently and helped me choose my breakfast. I had bagel sandwich with ham and eggs and I loved it. Everything was fresh and tasty. I am planning to go back at the first opportunity.

I've lived around the corner from Malachi's for 4 years, and only just discovered it a couple of months ago. The coffee is excellent, whether it's flavored with one of the many delicious flavorings they have, or simply black. The Avocado sandwich is literally the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Bacon and egg on an english muffin with fresh avocado, tomato, and spinach - delicious. I'm sure the other sandwiches on their menu are great as well, but I haven't been able to bring myself to order any of the others just yet.
(5)Lisa O.
Food is fresh and so so good. Want a smoothie made with fresh fruit? This is my go to place. Always a nice, quiet study location made extra fabulous by the company of Joe and Joe. Oh, and the beverages are delicious. Malachi's is the best kept secret on the east side.
(5)Johny C.
One of the absolute best spiced Chai (with almond milk) teas I have ever had. Yum. Friendly service. Fair prices. Casual, comfortable atmosphere. You can sit outside if you wish. I'll be back.
(4)Su C.
Fantastic breakfast bagels and the sweetest staff. The gentleman who owns this place is always courteous and professional, and swift with service. Huge fan of that special spicy chili pepper sauce that he puts on the bagels (we usually get sausage, egg, and cheese). Definitely a far cry better than regular tobasco! Music's not too loud, parking is available on the street and on the side. It's got a good vibe, not too many college students hanging thereabouts either which is nice if you want to get away from the crowded and young Thayer St scene. In terms of coffee -- I've had the mocha here and it was pretty standard but solidly good. Definitely worth visiting! It's been my go-to quick breakfast bagel spot in Providence for the past two years.
(4)Kendra N.
Had one of the Food Fights Iced coffee coupons so I checked it out. Cute place, no frills, huge list of sandwiches. I got the Tree Huger (egg, avacado, tomato, apple maple chicken sausage, and spinach), it was a great hearty breakfast sandwich on a bagel. They have numerous brewed flavored iced coffee, I tried the Jamaican me Cray Cray which tasted great. The service was fine, seems as though they have a lot of regulars that they talk to so there wasn't any really communication with me but they seemed friendly.
(4)Rachel M.
Delicious breakfast sandwiches, and their iced coffee flavors are brewed, not syrups! Staff remembered me by name and order after just a few visits.
(5)Meriam T.
Small coffee shop. Must have driven by this place a dozen times. They need to work on that curb appeal. But anyway, don't let that deter you. They are so nice and friendly. Great selection of coffee and sandwiches, smoothies. I tried their flavored hot coffee of the day- Pistachio!!! It was really good. The owner (he's Portuguese) even made me smell (or sniff?) the green pistachio powder. I'm a big pistachio fan and I'm in heaven! I will be back!!!
(4)Jessica F.
Great coffee! I enjoyed a peanut butter banana latte with the classic breakfast sandwich. Great for a sandwich and coffee/tea/smoothie.
(4)Tyler S.
I've only tried the shakes, which are very tasty. Tried the Monkey's Bananas without coffee. So... It's a coffee shop but has plenty of options (food and drink) for those not looking to have coffee. Very friendly people too, and a comfortable place to sit and chat. No reason to not give it 5 stars at the moment.
(5)Olivia P.
Good small business cafe with vegan options. Nice mix of sandwiches, bagels, and snacks. Good coffee and nice staff and service. Very happy to start my memorial morning. The cashier and man in the kitchen (who i assume is the owner) were really nice. They have a restroom and outdoor seating options in addition to indoor. I got the veg-out and it was really well toasted. Yum. Decent pricing.
(5)Diya S.
Great coffee -- the pistachio flavor was amazing! The grilled cheese was delicious too; good to support a local coffee shop. Friendly service & homey atmosphere!
(4)Linda C.
Stopped here because of the amazing reviews of their chai which definitely did not disappoint!! Creamy and so delicious!! Coffee place is rather small though. We would have liked to sit down even for a few minutes, but every table was full. Their menu offers a great selection of breakfast sandwiches which I can't wait to go back and try!
(4)Sarah Jean R.
Great service and coffee! I have only been once, but plan to return very soon. I noticed they have a few good looking vegan options on the menu. I can't wait to try them out. As of now, the 5 stars are for the really nice people working here, laid back atmosphere and good coffee.
(5)Barry D.
Sensational selection. Absolutely delicious drinks and snacks, and some really nice breakfast sandwiches. Planning ahead is necessary, because occasionally the drink and food preparation can be a bit slow (and that can interfere with catching buses and other time-related issues), but this place is about quality - and in that, they deliver in spades. It's become difficult for me to try new drinks there, because there are a couple* that are SO addictively delicious that it's tempting to get them, over and over, every single time. That's testament to how good they are. :) Also: be sure to pick up the buy one, get one half off deal on the five-year anniversary travel mugs! They look great, work very well, and plus, you get five free coffee refills with each mug! * Okay, okay - I'm talking about the pistachio shake, with coffee. Your life will never be the same after you've had it!
(4)Chintan M.
Very unassuming place. Good tea and coffee!! You can sample some Portuguese food. The owner is very nice and friendly person. Free internet.

Um I love this place. Ives Street is like a little treasure trove - with the divey and always kitschy Captain Seaweeds, the nice folks at Silver Stars, and I am now adding Malachi's to my list. You don't have to deal with the annoyance of overcrowding like Thayer and Wickenden streets, which is a super big plus, but you're just close enough that you can wander over if you want more excitement in your life. The first time I tried to go, it was Monday. It didn't look open but I couldn't tell so I jiggled the handle and it opened. Turns out, Malachi's is not open on Mondays but Joe is there, doing his paperwork. He was SO NICE about it too and even offered to make us anything on the menu, so long as it wasn't drip coffee because he doesn't brew it on Mondays. What a guy! Joe introduced himself, welcomed me to the area, and chatted us up for a while. Although we ended up waiting to purchase anything, it was really refreshing to not feel like an inconvenience, even if we were kind of being an inconvenience. :) Fast forward to my first real time ordering coffee: I love that they have flavored coffees, especially iced coffees, and it's not that gross, overly sweet syrup stuff that gives the flavor. I ordered a Chocolate Chai iced coffee and it was perfect because it wasn't too sweet but had all the flavor of chocolate and chai. Liz added milk to perfection - I hate when there's too much milk in a coffee, leaving it some variation of ivory. I like that they add it for you because, when you use those carafes at a Starbucks or whatever, yeah, they have to write down the time that they filled it so they know when to dump it but you don't know if they are actually adhering to that rule. By them adding the milk, you know it's always going to be cold and, hopefully, not curdling like it does often at places that leave milk carafes out. Anyway, I camped out there for a while surfing their free wifi while I worked on some writing projects. Their music selection is fun, I thought. Not the Kenny G type bull they play at Teas and Javas but not distracting to work. The seating area isn't huge but they have about four really big tables - I don't know about others but I'd have no problem sharing a table, which means, all things considered, you could probably fit at least 14 seated people in there. The only thing that was kind of annoying was this, I'm assuming, regular who kept popping in and out, talking really loudly, and sometimes even leaving the door open as she hollered (it ain't Spring weather yet, baby) but if that's your biggest problem at a coffeeshop, then you've found a rare gem.
(5)Taylor C.
Joe and Liz are amazing. The vegan grilled cheese and lentil soup are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Happy and full. Oh also, the All of Em smoothie is delicious too. This is the only place I've ever eaten where the people working want to talk to the customers and actually come right up to you to talk. Very pleased. Will be back!
(5)Ling L.
Delicious sandwiches.. but the area is under lots of construction which make u need extra attention to find this place
(5)nicole c.
Stopped in here on our way out of town for two iced coffees. Coffee was great and staff was super friendly. If we lived in Providence, this would be our go-to place!
(5)Mike B.
Great coffee - which I believe should be first and foremost if giving a "coffee shop" a good review. I usually go dark roast and it has a nice strong flavor. In general, they brew their coffees stronger than the average coffee places and that's fine by me. The owner [coincidentally named Joe] is a really nice guy who seems willing to bend over backwards to give ya what you want, the way ya want it. The ambiance is a little dark, but perfect if ya just want to veg out and read or have some interesting conversation with the eclectic regulars that pop in. There's wifi as well, and it's a good setting if you just need to focus in and get some work done. You can call ahead if you're in a rush and want to pick up and go. And they have a stamp card for regulars, fifth coffee is always free. Menu is full of different coffees, hot and iced, as well teas and chais, etc. There's also a bit of food like muffins, biscotti, cookies, egg sandwiches, and a damn good pulled pork sandwich (Huge portion), when available. They've recently extended their hrs to 8pm, I believe Weds-Sat. And there's a back patio which is really nice but seems underutilized. Maybe they'll find a way to incorporate the later business hours with that potentially great setting. A bit of a strange name, and a little hard to tell exactly what it is from the outside, but all in all, Malachi's has become my goto place for a good cup of joe.
(4)Tiffany B.
Hidden treasure!! Love the muffins, flavored coffee (they don't use syrup), and the red velvet concoctions
(5)Mick C.
First things first, super friendly and funny staff (and during a snow storm!) They remember the customers orders and are so conversational. My sandwich was great and so was the dark roast. I came at the recommendation of my coworker who also lives walking distance of here, good spot.
(4)Phil G.
This is my favorite coffee shop in Providence. It has a home-y, neighborhood-y atmosphere - lots of regulars, and very few undergrads - which I enjoy, and it's generally quiet enough for me to concentrate on my work. And when it's not quiet, that's often because something entertaining is going on (e.g., an extemporaneous lecture on the merits of communism). I'm not a sophisticated coffee drinker, but I like Malachi's, and the chai lattes are really good (hot or iced). They also have good lentil soup and vegan sandwiches. But most importantly, the owner - Joe - may be the nicest, friendliest guy in the city. It's not hard to decide whether I'd rather give my money to him or Starbucks.
(5)Jordan K.
Love it! Of all the days I chose to visit Malachai's it was the day of blizzard Juno. I was tired of being cramped up inside and needed to get out. Luckily Malachai's was open even through the snow storm! The owner was very friendly and attentive. I ordered an iced chai and he gave me the option of iced or frozen. I've never had a frozen chai and it sounded delicious and it was. So so good! I ordered the two shoes on an everything bagel and it did not disappoint. I particularly loved the pepper relish. Great little coffee shop, I can't wait to go back and try the lentil soup!
(5)Aaron S.
Malachi's is -- without question -- my favorite cafe in Providence, possibly even my favorite cafe anywhere I've ever lived. The staff is incredibly nice and they create a beautifully unique, familial atmosphere. There are many regulars that come in every day and when they walk through the door, everyone claps for them. It's beautiful. Aside from the amazingly friendly atmosphere, there's plenty for table space. They play soft music in the background. It's a perfect place to study. All that being said, the food is also great! They've got a great selection including awesome vegetarian and vegan options. I've spent numerous entire days there running up a tab through breakfast and lunch. And the prices are SO reasonable. It's one of those places I'd gladly pay significantly more than my bill because it's just such a great place to sit, work, eat, and be happy. Also, they didn't close once throughout all the huge snow storms. This place exceeded my expectations in every single way. It's that diamond in the rough cafe that everyone looks for when they move to a new city but never finds. I highly recommend everyone finding it. You won't be disappointed.
(5)Caroline M.
I never get anything to go at Malachi's because the best part, even better than the bagel sandwiches, is the banter between regulars and regulars, and the regulars and owner Joe. I always feel like my business is valued. I LOVE the Chorizo Navidad sandwich (Portuguese flair in the meat, bread, and cheese!). I LOVE that they have a sandwich that's called the Choizo Navidad. i LOVE that I get stamps and free coffee for my stamps. I LOVE that every time I go in something is different - more added to the walls, new brochures promoting a local business, new crafts for sale from a local artisan. I'm a sporadic regular. Love stopping in on the way into work to... how do they say... shoot the shit. And drink coffee. And people watch. Also a great place to work on your computer for a few hours, though it can get both crowded and noisy. Malachi's is my go-to East Side coffee shop - home away from home.
(4)Karina G.
Great little coffee shop. The dirty chai was good but sweet. I would go back to try the other menu items.
(3)Dee W.
My wife and I just moved to Providence and we were happy to see a sticker that read "Malachi's- Vegan options" I didn't expect much because sometimes "vegan options" means a cookie or a muffin. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they serve vegan sandwiches! Plus the sandwiches are affordable- I just ordered a vegan grilled cheese and it was delicious! I would strongly suggest visiting Malachi's. Plus the owner is SO friendly and helpful! The other dude that works there (the hipster) is not so nice and comes off as pretentious. I love this place, even with the typical pretentious hipster dude.
(5)Alma C.
To be honest, I do not like the coffee here. At all. Maybe it's just my inner coffee control freak kicking in (come on, I want to add my own cream!), but the coffee here is just not for me. However, I do like just about everything else about Malachi's, from the friendly owners, the quirky and random conversation prone regulars, the space, and the vibe. I'd come back for those, and just find my caffeine fix elsewhere. Note to people who try the coffee and disagree, Malachi's has the most generous coffee card punch I've found just about anywhere: buy 4 get the 5th free. I wish more places appreciated their patrons as much!
