Depending on the dish, La Gran Parada and another spot on Broad is tied for my top 2 of Dominican food in Providence at the moment. It's located across the street from a CVS in a nondescript strip mall hidden away in plain sight, in an under-appreciated neighborhood. Despite how few yelp reviews there are, it's very popular and can get really busy, especially during lunch. Latin food lovers eat this place up. What makes La Gran Parada stand out from other Dominican spots like Carolina's or Pito's is how much more inviting the dining area is. They had remodeled a year or so ago so everything is spic and span and the prices remained inexpensive, about $5 for a "small" portion that is generously piled up with food like a pyramid on your plate. The food is cafeteria-style and a lot of it tastes better than some made-to-order restaurants around town, Latin or otherwise. There's no signs or menus that I've seen to describe the food, you just pick a plate size and point at something that looks tasty until the server stops asking you what you want. Or, ask. Many of the workers speak English and everyone I've encountered has been helpful. Final thoughts: Bring friends. Try everything. Prepare for major food coma.

I've had better. I got the stewed chicken and it had way too many tiny bones in it, not much meat at all. The rice wasn't fresh. And because they put the chicken gravy over the rice, the rice was riddled with itty bitty tiny pieces of bone but kept getting stuck in my teeth with every bite. One of the worst eating experiences I've had in a while especially since I was so hungry. Grant it it was 9pm and they close at 10 PM. I'm a lover of plantains and these were by far the worst I've ever eaten! They were fatty and barely glazed. No thank you. I won't be returning.

This is the one and only place I stop to get Dominican food in Providence! Friendly. Clean. Spacious. Delicious!

Good food great staff/family... the food selection is amazing ... if your going to eat in theres plenty of parking in the back of the building with back entrance... also after you made your selection [cafeteria style] theyll tell you to go sit down and theyll bring everything to you ... the staff is always in a great mood sometimes youll catch them dancing together and it just puts you in a great mood... If there's something specific that you want they'll most likely make it for you... its very spacious inside with plenty of seating ..

Today, I stopped for lunch and the selection was ample and yummy. I decided to get a Sancocho (Homemade soup made with chicken, pork, plantains, carrots, and other root vegetables). It was delicious !!! So nicely seasoned with the right blend of herbs and seasonings. I also got a beef empanada...the ones they sell are the dough ones not corn...then fried. It was very good, probably the best I've had in a long time.. Crisp and warm, nicely seasoned beef filling. Not greasy at all. Yummy food !!!! Cash only.

Thank you Alma C! I wanted something different for lunch yesterday, started playing around on Yelp but hadn't really found what I wanted. In an AHA! moment I clicked on Alma's profile, and narrowed down her reviews to Providence & restaurants. This is my new life philosophy: WWAD. What Would Alma Do. And she didn't let me down. The food is served cafeteria style, TONS of choices, and the prices are amazing. He asked if I wanted a medium or large serving, I said medium and got a bucket's worth of food, rice & ribs, for $7. The place itself is really nice, bright airy & clean. Very pleasant to eat-in. And they have a parking lot behind the building. Everyone working there is super nice too. A great lunch choice in Elmwood.

La Gran Parada is a place I've noticed often, since it's on the corner of Broad and Adelaide, a street on which friends live. Everytime I look in the large plate glass windows, there is a line. I swear! Today, I stopped and stood in line for 10 minutes and estimated I had 15-20 more minutes to wait. I thought this odd since it is cafeteria style and would seem to flow quickly. The smell was incredible as was the food I saw others eating. Definitely worth another visit...

I've been going to this restaurant for years with my husband and kids. They used to be so amazing but the last couple of times it's been nothing but aggravating service. For instance the lady who served us last time had the biggest attitude and we definitely let her know. And on top of that she charged us an extra plate which I calculated everything we had and we let her know. She acted like she was right. Needless to say after 20 minutes of arguing with her we asked for someone else due to no management being around. We got our money back after she realized she messed up. Never again will we ever go back. I'll go down the street on broad to a different Spanish restaurant. Thanks for nothing but aggravation La Gran Parada.

I almost forgot to write a review...oops! Anyways...Tried this place out solely on the reviews and was highly disappointed. I should have kept my expectations low. While this place is awesome inside, the food is mediocre! To my husband, the kids and I it was all sorta tasteless. The lines are crazy, but the staff are all nice. This place definitely trumps all others around because is very inviting and cute on the inside. Oh and yes the prices are great and portions are big!! Would I eat here again? Ehhh, not sure, but I know I would still rather eat here over the other Spanish spots around. Better yet, I could just make it all myself lol since my Spanish food is way better (per my family) maybe I should open my own restaurant ;) no but seriously, the food here is way over rated, but again the prices are great and it's cute, clean and pretty comfortable inside! If I do decided to eat here again I will go earlier in the day. I hope that will make a difference in the taste!

I'm giving this place 5 stars because the food tastes like someone(s) put a lot of LOVE into it. Seriously, the Spanish food here is extremely comforting and tasty. There are lots of meat and rice/bean combo options. Some of my favorite so far are the goat and ox-tail. Cooked to perfection, falling off the bone, stick to your ribs kind of stews. The rice and beans too are made very well - not mushy, flavorful but not salty. Oh, and the portions are HUGE. Heaping, generous portions and you won't spend more than $10 for a combo plate that can feed 2-3 people. In terms of ambiance, it has plenty of seating, but there's usually a pretty long line (for a good reason) that entails about a 10-15 minute wait on the weekends. There isn't a clear menu, but you'll do fine just pointing and asking questions. Worth it!

As far as Spanish restaurants go on Broad street in Providence go, this is the top dog in my book. This place is the newest and cleanest looking place I've been to. Their selection is the biggest. Their chicharrones are the best ones I've ever seen, they are huge. I am a huge fan of ox tail and goat. I tried the oxtail. Unlike other Spanish restaurants that charge a flat fee for all meats, this place charged 14 bucks. It was very good. It was cooked in a sherry. If this place wasn't so busy I'd consider eating here more on my work week lunch spot. This is more of a Friday reward me for a long hard week lunch spot. Until then I'll stick with my Pito's on Broad (not Cranston).

Low prices, good amount of food, food quality is okay, the line is always huge and the neighborhood is not the best. Had to wait 20 mins in line to order. 4 stars is fair.

Authentic food at great prices. Staff is extremely kind and accommodating. Portions are huge. Everything is made from scratch. Can't wait to come back!

Forget the bad neighborhood, forget the very minimal language barrier, forget any reason you wouldn't and get down here. My new favorite spot. We discovered it a week ago and have been three times already, and I cook the same type of food at home! It's delicious and the price is so right!

Good food, GREAT price!!! Hard to find a good meal for two under twenty bucks. Fourteen dollars for two plates of awesome pork, yummy yellow rice and crisp small salad with a nice salty vingerette and two sodas. Cant beat that - will definitely return .

If you want something they don't have in display, just ask or call ahead. They will usually make it for you, but you either have to wait or call ahead next time. Sometimes they may have some already made in the back.

Mom and pop type place. Parking in the back. You make an order when you walk in. They have different foods ready, you choose from that. I'm not sure if it'll be easy to order if you don't know Spanish. Prices and names of food are not listed. If you decide to dine in, they bring the food to you. I'm dominican, born there and raised in NY... The food was on point. Some things tasted a bit different than from What I had but still delicious. The food is authentic and delicious. Also, they were friendly! I agree with the previous review stating that this seems to be the island of delicious pork!

This place is soooooo good! The beans are amazing and the yellow rice is perfectly seasoned. They speak both english and Spanish so this is a plus. The line is always really long so make sure you call ahead if you are taking out.

This is a great place, it really is. I don't know exactly what kind of food this is, or where these folks are from -perhaps "the island of delicious pork"? To be fair, I have only tried a few things; the Chicharrón and some wonderfully rich soupy ribs with rice (that I admit I don't know know the name of, I just pointed to it and said "that, please") I bet that if you speak and even rudimentary Spanish (unlike me) you'll have an even better experience here. All I know is that's cheap, fast, and they have the absolutely BEST Chicharrónes I have ever tasted. They do have some small tables but its really more of a take-out kind of place. Plus, this is the kind of food that you want to enjoy either in front of the TV or, conversely, sitting under a tree.

when i crave Spanish dishes, this is the place. Staff are always friendly. Be prepared to wait to order as this is a popular lunch, dinner spot. The food is fresh and delicious. This place can use more seating but other than that, i recommend La Grande Parada.
