I've been going infrequently for 15 years. It's comfortable and usually sit at the bar. Staff has been pleasant Always a good classic margarita. Had the nachos last night with steak. Very good. In search of best nachos in the state.

Food is authentic but beyond the great food the service is over the top Joanna the host is so friendly and professional. Our waitress Julianna was very helpful and knowledgeable her suggestions were spot on and the table side guacamole that she made was outstanding. Federal Hill for authentic Mexican go figure right but it is great you will not be disappointed.

Middle of the road Tex-Mex. It's ok, not really my cup of tea but good in a pinch especially for the great selection of tequila, friendly service and being convenient for larger parties.

This place is amazing. The drinks are amazing and the female server I've had almost every time is the best lady I've met in a while. The tableside guacamole made me like it and the food is just great.

Best calamari I found in RI! Margaritas are balanced w/flavor & tequila. I alwys get the pollo chipotle and it fills me right up when you're hungry.

Best Mexican in the city!!!! Authentic and delicious, with Jamie, what a treat! Yes it might be a little pricey but you get what you pay for here! I love the atmosphere, the people, and the food. Never a bad time or a bad meal.

This is a solid 3. Nothing spectacular. Small and dark inside. It is maddening that when serving fajitas, all you get is a thimble size of sour cream, and guacamole. We were billed for the additional sour cream we asked for, which, believe me came out in another small container. The sides for the fajitas: lettuce, tomato, re-fried beans were also a smaller size serving then we are accustomed to. Nothing here to rave about.

As a Southern California native, I was convinced that I would not be able to find a Hispanic restaurant that would meet the caliber of flavor I am accustomed to. Don Jose Tequila proved me wrong! The staff are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They are attentive, friendly, helpful, and informative. The food is mouthwatering good! I highly recommend the nachos with chicken. Go with the large and I assure you that It will fill both people up. There are layers of flavor and they don't skim out on either quality or quantity. Best Hispanic restaurant in Federal Hill hands down!

Can't decide between 3 Stars or 4. First of all, we were kind of surprised to learn of a TEX-MEX restaurant on Federal Hill. But this place was recommended by a foodie friend, and we were dying for good fajitas, so to Federal Hill we went in search of them! The restaurant has wonderful valet parking, and nice parkers, to boot! We were greeted by friendly staff at the front door and seated immediately. A friendly waitress came by with menus and took our drink orders. There were SO MANY different types of margaritas on the menu, we simply ordered the one most like an original! We then ordered some guacamole to go with the chips we were served (very stale and hard). A big production was made by a young man making the guacamole at the table with a bowl and pestle, telling us what he put into it and making cute jokes. The guacamole was quite pricey, but it was definitely good and we finished the whole serving before our fajitas for two (which was what we came here for) arrived. The platter was exactly enough for two persons, and there were two of us so that worked out fine! We are accustomed to larger portions in Tex-Mex restaurants in DC where we used to live. But it was still not a big deal because we each had an ample serving. The beef was good and very nicely cooked. It did not have enough of the marinade flavor we were accustomed to, but every place is different, so I'm just mentioning this. The fajita steak was good, but could have had a little bit more flavor. All in all, we thought the food was good, the service was excellent, the guacomole was pricey, and we thought that the restaurant seemed a bit on the "touristy" side. But not sure why tourists would go to Federal Hill for Mexican food. Just sayin'! :-)

A group of friends and I went here for Cinco de Mayo. Despite being crowded, it didn't seem like they had any festivities for the holiday Margaritas are absolutely deliciously sweet. Food was ok.

Deep fried ice cream, need I say more! This is what sets Atwells Ave apart from other places like Little Italy and the North End, being able to get amazing Mexican food just a few doors down from all the great Italian restaurants. My fiancé and I love coming here whenever we have a chance, the margaritas are fantastic even if you just get the house. No matter what you get though be sure to try the fried ice cream. Enjoy!

If I could give less than one star, I would. The food was absolutely disgusting. The mild salsa tasted like Spaghetti-O's sauce. The nachos were just gross. The margaritas were too sweet and very weak -- basically just sour mix. When our food came, it was inedible. The worst part about our experience was that, after I complained, the waitress, manager, and one of the cooks came to our table and tried to convince us that we were wrong about the quality of the food. Now we're home and both feeling incredibly ill. Not really how I wanted to start out my 4th of July weekend! Do yourself a favor and drive to Hope Street and go to Tortilla Flats! Normally I'm not one to leave such a negative review, and I am an avid Mexican food eater, but the semi-harassment of the restaurant staff was just awful and unacceptable.

Readers Digest: Come here for great apps and superb drinks. Best drinks around Federal Hill. The dinner menu, it is on par with average Mexican places. Full Version: Federal Hill is a great place to head when looking for a place to eat. We happened upon this place while in search of dinner. The inside is quaint and quiet. Which is really a plus IMO as I really dislike loud places. Sometimes you find a small place that has music playing, and then everyone tries to talk over the music and then the next thing you know you can barely hear yourself speak. Not here. The waitstaff here also is worth mentioning, as they are incredibly attentive and courteous. One couple had a frustrated child who decided to scream most of the time, and even someone from the kitchen tried to help. While his efforts failed, it was nice to see. Although the family and the member of the staff was speaking Mexican, so I am not really sure what was said in the conversation. The drinks are a little on the pricier side, but any qualms about this goes out the door once you try them. I have had hit and miss situations with Mexican restaurants and Margaritas. This place was SPOT on and I would rank them with the highest and best Margaritas I have had. Not that it is a bad thing, but I am fairly certain we spent more on drinks than food. The dinner meals however were somewhat disappointing. Do not get me wrong, they were fine. And the prices were very reasonable. However after having set the bar so high with the appetizer and drinks, I guess I was expecting the meals to be a bit higher quality. Or perhaps this is more or less authentic than the Mexican food I have become used to. On the meals alone, I would have given this place three stars, but everything else combined makes this easily a four star place. All and all, I would come back here and try the food again regardless. Maybe it was an off night. Maybe it was what I ordered.

The food was amazing every time I go here. The paella was perfect! Shrimp, mussles, clams, calamari, and chicken in saffron rice with tomatoes! Perfect. And funny seeing as Im not very into spicy food lol they made it to order perfectly. The staff are nothing short of amazing attentative and sweet! The drinks are to die for! They have the most amazing mango margaritas! The time before that I had like a seafood stew! They brought it over in a big cast iron pot, and even used the carcass of the lobster as a decoration sticking out of the pot!!! The rice was perfectly cooked! The only possible critique i could have for this place, is that they could do with a bit more lighting. Otherwise, 4 stars!!! I recommend this place to everyone I know that likes spicy authentic mexican food!

The hubs and I went here on a Fri after a long week and were greeted by the friendliest waitress (who didn't stop buzzing around to her many tables) and the most delicious Mexican food we've had in a while! The bill wasn't inexpensive but the food was delicious! I think we've found a new go-to!

I've been to this restaurant three times and I can honestly say I've found something off each time. I haven't particularly enjoyed the food, though some dishes have been okay. They make a presentation of guacamole being prepared at your table which is kind of interesting, though given the option I'd probably ask them not to. The guacamole is definitely delicious though. I've also had a platter of various foods but found I didn't really like anything on it, so the food really hasn't been a hit for me. The last time I ate here was at dinner time. The lighting inside is not very bright as it is, which could be a nice atmosphere but it becomes very very dim inside at dusk. The waitress didn't light the candles at our table until we were about to leave, well into the evening, and we ate in semi darkness. It wasn't comfortable, and mixing with our disappointment with the food, we were ready to leave as soon as possible. Some highlights would be the guacamole and yum slush margaritas, though they're a bit pricey ($10) but that's also to be expected with the location (Federal Hill). The service is good and welcoming. The inside is decorated very nicely too, though I'd say they could up the lighting a bit and still keep their ambiance. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant as there are numerous other Mexican places very close by that have better menus and prices.

I was extremely pleased (and surprised at how pleased I was) last week when the boy and I ventured here for dinner. Cheap beer, delicious food (have whatever the goat entree is because it'll rock your world), and extremely polite service led us to leave happy and satisfied. They even took a coupon we had that wasn't supposed to be valid on the weekend (shhhh). We just did the chips and salsa, but they'll make guac for you at the table if that's your pleasure. The marge looked HUGE and delish. My only experience has been standing outside trying to get in on cinco de mayo, so this was definitely an improvement.

They left a pen in my burrito box never again will I get food here. Calamari is chewy and hard to eat. The chips were the only "real" edible thing to eat. On top of that the manager is incredibly difficult to talk too and almost refused to compensate not worth the $98.61 and hour and a half of waiting if I could give less stars I would.

Love this place! From the salsa, which is kind of more a puree of peppers and tomato than what you might have experienced with most salsas, to the appetizers and entrees, this place does not dissapoint. The seafood ceviche was amazing with avacado chunks of talapia and medium - large shrimp. For my entree I can't go here and NOT get the stuffed chicken breast in their own mole (mo-lay) sauce. If you love rich flavors and a little kick you MUST try this dish...

If you are on restaurant.com I'm going to try you. If you have margaritas, I'm going to try you. Don Jose Tequilas meets both of those requirements. You'll have to deal with parking on the hill. Luckily its on the quite end. The restaurant is smaller so big party's are welcome but you might have to wait for space. The servers are friendly. No free chips and salsa. BUMMER. I hate paying for chips and salsa. Their fish tacos were good. Not the best I've had but certainly worth having again. The chicken quesadilla was good too. When I had the chicken tacos on the same evening, turned out a little dry. On an app they had this AMAZING tomato cream sauce, I have no idea what it was but it was delicious. The basic margarita is just right. I like mine frozen and it had a great consistency. You can get a pitcher if you choose. I tried the chambord marg and it came chunky and icy. Won't do that again. The one problem I had was the first time we went, we got a pitcher of the basic margarita. The waitress up charged us for the top shelf tequila. UM we didn't ask for that. I was furious. She said well that's what I gave you. I thought it was just a really good marg. So I said I didn't want to pay for it. She was reluctant to take it off the bill. Then the people I was with said they didn't want to deal with it. So we just paid it and didn't really tip her. I was NOT happy. So check your bill if you do go here. Make sure you are getting what you order and make sure you are paying for what you get. I got a plain margarita the second time we went and it sure tasted the same as that "top shelf" one.

Came after work with friends and enjoyed some DELICIOUS margaritas - si senor, skinny, and tamarindo - and a meal. The server was very friendly without being overbearing, the food (barbacoa, enchiladas verdes, and two chicken mole dishes) were liked all around. The Barbacoa was especially good - served on the bone and just falling apart once you cut into it.

I'm really surprised that this place only has three and a half stars! I got the chicken quesadilla and it was amazing. I NEVER finish everything on my plate and I ate the entire thing. Was way too full. Worth it. Shared a pitcher of the Luna Llena margarita which is basically a blue margarita, but it was good. Service was good, ambience is really nice and cozy. A tad pricy, but that is to be expected on Federal Hill. The server did forget to bring us water, but we're all human - he brought it right over when we asked a second time. I'm so glad I finally tried this place since it's in my neighborhood. I've been missing out. Try the fried ice cream if you have room.

Giving this 4 stars and not 5 only because we went for lunch and didn't have cocktails. Really good Mexican. I has the Flautas and my husband has the Chimichanga. We've had both of these items in different restaurants where you could tell they had been frozen then fried. These seemed fresh and were really flavorful. The rice on the side was also really good. Usually the rice in a Mexican restaurant is nothing special but this was almost like a seasoned Jasmine rice. We'll be back again for sure.

Since moving to New England I am always looking for authentic Mexican restaurants (sorry Chipotle and similar burrito joints are NOT authentic). I can now add Don Jose Tequilas to the list places to go to get real Mexican food. The atmosphere is very warm and comfortable; you get a real Mexican feel the minute you walk in the door! I have always been a big fan of tamales, so I had to give it a try. I will say that this was honestly the best tamale I have had; this coming from someone who grew up on home cooked Mexican food, as well as having been to Mexico multiple times. The masa was not overbearing and bland, the pork was very well seasoned, and the thing was huge! Based on Yelp reviews, the group I was with tried the calamari... I am sad to say, that we all agreed that we had had better and would not get it again. The list of margaritas was a bit overwhelming; however, if you have a favorite tequila, they will likely have a margarita with it on the menu. The guys had a pitcher of house margaritas, which were just okay... next time I would probably pay $10 more for the premium stuff. The girls had a pitcher of pomegranate margaritas which everybody agreed was awesome. The menu choices offer enough selection to please any pallet, and it does make it a bit hard to choose from. All of our meals were fantastic! Cochinita Pibil (Yucatan pulled pork), paella, tacos, and burritos, were all well seasoned, and bursting with mouth watering flavor! Their portion size was very good for the price; expect to leave full or take some home with you. The staff was exceptional as well! The hostess greeted us with a friendly smile and seated us right away, our server Claudia was very attentive and friendly as well. With great food, valet parking and such amazing staff, we will certainly be back again soon!

Honestly I don't think I've ever been to a better Mexican-style restaurant, and to find one on Federal Hill, a place known for its Italian? What a gem! The lighting is a bit dark but the decor is really interesting and fun inside. The service was really fast, friendly, and efficient. The waitress never wasted her or our time by interrupting our meal just to check in unnecessarily; she only came by when she knew we needed something and it was always perfect timing. We got the fresh guacamole for an appetizer, which they actually make right at your table, which is interesting. Watch out though, it costs $12! I think the girl who made ours might have been new as she seemed a bit nervous and shy but the guac turned out REALLY good. I got the Picante margarita which was nice and spicy and delicious. My date's marg was also really well done, and the drinks came SO fast it was impressive. The food itself was superb. I got the pollo a chipotle, which is chicken with a creamy chipotle sauce. My date got the pulled pork. Each of the entrees ran about $15 and the margaritas $9, which are a solid price considering the portions and the quality. All in all, this was a wonderful experience and I would definitely go back, especially if the Amazon Local coupon pops up again! I highly recommend it!

I took a trip here to meet up with my mother for Mother's day--okay Two days after mother's day, but it's the thought that counts. ( I had to work mother's day.) It was roughly 3pm, and to start the service was kind of slow. Which is kind of to be expected since we were the first people to sit and eat for the day. We started off by ordering drinks-- nothing special, and we received them ten minutes after we ordered them. All we ordered was a coffee, a ginger ale, and a glass of malbec. I'm not sure why it took her so long to give us drinks, but alright! We ordered the chips and a large guacamole to start off with. The salsa was pretty bland if I do say so. It almost tasted like nothing more than tomatoes. The Guacamole was smooth, but to be honest I think I make better guacamole. It didn't seem to have much seasoning in it. My mother ordered the pulled pork, and it was rather flavorful, but everything else that was ordered was very bland. It was kind of disappointing. I mean I ate the food, and overall it wasn't HORRIBLE, it was just very bland. My boyfriend's dish was very bland too. The waitress was pleasant, but after we all ate our food, the plates probably sat on the table for 10 minutes or so, before she came and wrapped up our left overs, and offered dessert/coffee. When my mom finished her cup of coffee, we sat waiting for the check for another 20+ minutes, which is pretty annoying because we were the only ones in the place. I probably won't go back here, there are so many other places in the area to try.

I came here with the intention of getting real Mexican food - and I was pleased! Everything was good from the homemade chips and salsa, to the Don Jose margarita, to the enchiladas I ordered. I ordered my enchiladas with the green sauce, which I had never had but it was delicious. I'd be willing to go back just to order the same thing but with the red sauce. There were plenty of affordable options on the menu and the drink prices were unbeatable! I'm just going to knock it down a star because it was a little too dark in there. But everything else, from the food to the service, was wonderful!

Tonight I had dinner with a good friend and luckily I hadn't seen her in a while and we had a ton to catch up on because for a one course meal we spent 2 1/2 hours there. This was due solely to the painstakingly slow service we received. We ordered our food within 15 min and got it with another 10 easily. From that point on it seemed our server, Dayris, forgot our existence. We had to ask twice for the check also as we were forgotten about after the first request. Ridiculous! Can't say food was good enough to put up with this service and I won't be rushing back any time soon.

I'm on a mission to find the best nachos near Providence, RI, and so far, this is easily the place. Nacho Mama's (see reviews) in Bristol hypes a big Rhode Island Monthly "Best in Rhode Island" banner but the nachos at Don Jose are far better and much cheaper. The enormous basket of nachos at Don Jose priced at $8 (lunch, $9 dinner) includes the guacamole on the nachos at no extra charge, compared to an upcharge of $1.75 for a side of the green stuff at Nacho Mama's. Tacos Don Nacho in Pawtucket is an adorable roadside roach coach with pretty good nachos for a buck less but no indoor seating. Trinity Brewhouse has good nachos but they wouldn't even quote me a price for guacamole on the side, and the nachos were over 50 percent more expensive ($12.96 vs $8.59 tax incl.) to boot. Don Jose is on Atwells Ave, not known as a low rent district, and I figured for sure it would tend to be higher priced. Not so! The service was friendly, the order produced promptly, and the decor and the music were all appropriate for a Mexican restaurant. I look forward to coming back to sample the other offerings.

I'm calling it: my 5.5 year-long search for good Mexican in New England seems to be over! We met a friend and her young daughter at Don Jose last night. The ambience is cozy and casual; the bar TV had on ESPN, and it was quiet enough we could hear ourselves talk. Very attentive waiters. The only sad thing is that our littlest dining companion's chicken fingers took forever to arrive; I think they might have forgotten about the order, or something happened with the fryer. But the food and good company made up for this in the end. We started off with a large order of the pre-made guac; it was very serviceable guacamole, and the chips and salsa were excellent. It did taste a little prepackaged, but at least it was advertised as such! I'm not sure fresh avocadoes would have been better this time of year, but the table next to us got the table-side guacamole and looked very happy with it. My cheese enchiladas mole were amazing, totally delectable. The mole was intense and spicy and chocolatey, and the rice and beans along with the dish were the ultimate comfort food. I had a little bit leftover for breakfast (the order came with 3 enchiladas, which was one more than I was expecting) and it tasted great heated up. Everyone was happy with their meal. Looking forward to going back.

Federal Hill is famous for Italian food, but after a few trips, I've found that the places that don't serve Italian food are even more impressive. Don Jose's is one of them- the tequila selection is AMAZING, and the food is really homemade with love- I've had home cooking from puerto rico to south america, and this place is just as awesome. I always get great service, they genuinely care about you and make for an all-out fantastic experience.

Pros: Great decor. Entrees are pretty good. Cons: Guacamole was basically just avocado. The salsa served with chips was very watery. Service was slow, even though the place was empty. I believe the waiter forgot my guacamole order; I reminded him when he brought my entree.

I keep coming to Don Jose's because I love the atmosphere. I will say the quality of food and margaritas has gone down over the years and I am struggling to find a reason to come back. Would be willing to pay a little extra for a margarita that does not just taste like sour mix. I do enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa and the $19.95 three course menu had some good options.

Quite pleased with our dinner here. My husband, father and I wanted Mexican. The fact that Don Jose's is on Atwells is a plus- it's a nice area to stroll around in after dinner. We thought the decor was fun- bright, colorful, used lots of Mexican standard wall murals, light fixtures, etc. Food wise, we had a tough time deciding. The menu does cover a lot of meats though the fish dishes are pretty much tilapia or shrimp focused. I had the ceviche (quite a tasty and generous portion), we split the guacamole and one of the don jose samplers. The guacamole was VERY good and the chips were nice and fresh. Entre wise I did have their "award winning" (as it was billed on the menu) pork pibil. This dish was AWESOME!! I loved the seasoning and the meat was sooo tender. My husband had the bistek mexicana which was also very tender and delicious. We also tried the stuffed chicken breast in the mole sauce. While I've had more decadent moles, this was pretty good. The chicken breast was also excellent. I am always pleased when meat is cooked properly, not too dry, rubbery or way too raw. Desert wise, wowsa, the tres leches cake was GREAT!! My dad got the fried ice cream which was also yummy. Drink wise I was the only one who got margaritas, which were about 3/5 stars. Fresh, flavorful, but a bit too sweet for my taste. I don't care to drink syrupy sweet drinks. On the whole, my husband and I would've liked to give this place 3.5 stars. It was standard, good quality, tasty, fresh Mexican fare. However, it was very VERY loud. Granted a busy restaurant is a good sign, but it was hard to hear each other across the table. Moreover, the sides were a bit.. . well. . . standard and bland. Rice and beans are . . . well. . . standard. . . but nothing to write home about. The main meals, appetizers and deserts were great. Oh, and our server was incredibly nice, quick and attentive. We'll be coming back.

Tex Mex ahhh yes! Great Fajitas, tamales , pico and margaritas and some really good fried Calamari... It's Da Hill , U Gotta Have Fried Squid! Been ordering delivery through foodler and it always arrives hot and on point!

Everything was great, from the food to the margaritas. I recommend the queso dip with chorizo, the pork tamales and the fried chimichanga. I also highly recommend the barbacoa dish which is very savory and tender goat meat (don't be scared and try. Taste like shredded beef) in a red house sauce.

Have you ever had one of those moments where you realize you forgot to Yelp about one of your favorite places? No, me neither. Until I just realized I had never written a review for Don Jose Tequilas. I know, I know. You're thinking, "Mexican food on Federal Hill? Blasphemy!" I was too, before I tried it. And you can't knock it before you try it. But being Italian, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the concept. I strolled into Don Jose Tequilas initially because we parked nearby and it was pouring rain, and we figured it was worth stopping for a margarita to wait it out. But one margarita turned into two (or three...) and the aromas of fresh salsa, carne, cilantro and other tasty Mexican foods was just too much for us... so we ordered some food too. The chips and salsa to start with were TO DIE FOR (I think we had 4 bowls) and the quesadillas are outstanding. Their guacamole is one of my favorites. The food, drinks, service and atmosphere here are just top notch. I've now been here a few times and sat both at the bar and at a table, and had great experiences all around. So after my initial skepticism about Mexican food in an Italian neighborhood, I behoove all of you to give it a shot. You won't be disappointed!!

This place was better than I expected based on the mixed reviews. We really liked the chips, guacamole, and queso fundido. The salsa was a bit too spicy for both our tastes. I tend to prefer places that offer pico for this reason. My horchata was very good, stronger flavor than most places. Our waitress was super nice. It was cute how she called us senioritas. I dig it. Nice atmosphere. They have free valet and I like that you can have a salad on the side instead of rice and beans, without paying more. They do charge you for the 2nd orders of chips and salsa. For the prices they charge it may be a better idea to just give smaller amounts after the first serving, to make sure less gets wasted. I mean one can only eat so much of it anyway, especially once they get their food. It got very loud here soon after we got there so weekdays may be best. I tend to avoid the hill on weekends but it was for my friends birthday and she has been wanting to try this place. The only 2 negatives here were that I didn't really care for the beef in my burrito. The taste just didn't sit well with me somehow. Also, I think it is too expensive when there are nearby places that are much cheaper and just as good, if not better. I tend to like both the menu and the prices better at California Taco Shop and El Rancho Grande myself. You can also buy single items there so you don't have to pay $12 for a quesadilla or a burrito with sides you don't want. So I guess I just don't feel the need to pay higher prices here in the future but overall it was an ok experience.

My wife and I went on a Saturday night and the place was pretty busy. The server was super professional and knowledgeable about tequila. He let me try out some Kah Tequila too after I showed an interest. Really cool guy, even gave me a free margarita pass! The food was your standard mexican fare but done well. Can't go wrong here!

Can't be beat! I came here two days in a row for lunch, it was such a memorable experience. Mind you, it's restaurant week here in Providence, so the deal is incredible. An appetizer, entree, and dessert... anything off the menu, no limitations, for $12.95. First of all, the restaurant itself is well-aligned with the theme without being gaudy like some others. It's dark with lots of fake plants and hanging lights. The service is unbeatable! Both days we came here we had different servers, and both were incredibly attentive, friendly, and helpful. Our first lunch was a belated birthday lunch for my mom. Our waiter overheard us making a toast to her and later on surprised ALL of us by playing the Happy Birthday song, putting a candle in her ice cream, and bringing out a sombrero and a shot of tequila. We were stunned that he had overheard and taken the initiative to do that for us, since we hadn't told him. It was an unforgettable birthday that's for sure! As far as the food goes, between my three courses a visit, and trying everyone else's food, I have yet to find a single weakness in their menu. The nachos were wonderful, the enchiladas-delicious, the ceviche-flavorful, the fajitas-classic, the tres leches-luscious, the chocolate tamale-decadent, and so on and so on. I could continue with the food porn for hours. But I can hear my stomach start to growl, so I will save myself from indulging in a late night snack. Just go to Don Jose Tequilas. You won't be sorry! Easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in RI, and I used to live and eat Mexican food in LA once upon a time, so I'm pretty sure my opinion on the matter doesn't suck. Oh and PS the drinks are fab, and pitchers are a really great deal on various margarita flavors and sangria. Yum!

Pretty good mexican for the area. Great looking bar and I love the decor. Can't go wrong with a pitcher of margaritas with fresh lime juice instead of sour mix for $22. Really friendly and attentive service. The menu is really inventive with a some of their dishes on top of also having all the traditional ones as well. The only thing I found weird was how fast the food came out and how my plate was hotter than the food on it. But overall I will definitely give it another try and if not for the food, for the pitchers of margaritas and the selection of tequila.

Great ambiance. Very attentive and fun wait staff. Really good food: the tortilla soup, nachos, and chili relenos were all fantastic! The fish tacos weren't quite as flavorful, but not bad at all. The drinks are decent. They could use a simple syrup for their mojitos instead of sugar, but they have a decent kick to them! The michelada was my favorite! We had a great time both visits and will definitely go back.

Coming from California, I have high expectations from any place calling themselves a mexican restaurant. While the place has always been busy when I have been there, I cannot say that this place meets any of my expectations. I have not found one thing on this menu that tastes good, food is bland, even the salsa is bland. I have been several times to meet friends, but I will not give this place another chance.

Providence doesn't have a lot of Mexicans, and we don't have a lot of Mexican food. We have a lot of Dominicans and Central Americans, and there are some great "authentic" (always a loaded word) restaurants on Broad St and throughout neighborhoods like Washington Park, Elmwood, and Olneyville. Don Jose is a bit of a different animal. It's on Atwells, and it's clientele seems to mostly be folks on a night out, rather than being the corner stop for a quick bite to eat for guys in the neighborhood. I've only been here twice, and each time it actually was a pretty quick in-and-out for me. I've never spent a long night here drinking Margaritas and hanging out. I will say the food I've had was basic (because I order the basics, not because they can't do more) and good. The service each time is insanely fast. If it was any faster I would have eaten my burrito before I walked in the door. The restaurant has a bit of hokeyness to it that is part of it's charm. Like the fact that the server took pains to keep calling us "Amigos" and stressing that term, or calling me "Senor" even though he's some kid from Wanskuck and not Guadalajara. While it may not be one of my go-to places for dinner, I can definitely see myself coming back here every few months to have something a little different.

I don't like how this restaurant only has an average 3 score. I went here the other night and really enjoyed the service, atmosphere, and food. Some of the dishes looked very American-influenced (chimichanga, for example) but my Cochinita Pibil (roast pork dish) was fantastic and tasted just like what I had in Mexico City years ago. I also enjoyed the pineapple margarita. The atmosphere is slightly chain-ish, but not really. They've done a good job making people feel comfortable without selling out to the boring chain styles.

We went here for lunch yesterday. It was ridiculous, in a good way. First off, the interior could use a little updating. We were promptly greeted and seated. Since it was a gray, dismal day and we had no other plans, we said what the hell and ordered a pitcher of margaritas for the two of us. The Si Señor pitcher came with very, very little ice, unlike most places which is 3/4 ice and not much margarita. We ordered guacamole, which was nice and fresh and were also given complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa had a nice, smokey taste. The waiter highly recommended the Molcajete Azteca and since we couldn't make up our minds, we got it for two. He came out with a giant bowl of steak strips, chicken strips, shrimp, chourico and grilled cactus. We each also got a plate of rice and beans. It was way too much food for the two of us, but was delicious! I would definitely go back and get it again although I would like to try out some other dishes. I definitely recommend this place.

By far the best margaritas in town! All fresh ingredients and very tasty with no sour mix! I love their frozen mango margarita it's definitely a treat! The food and atmosphere make you feel like you are in Mexico I love it. The waiters and waitresses are always pleasant and so is the owner.

Don Jose Tequilas has always been a staple Mexican restaurant for me. It's not really the greatest food I've ever eaten, but if I'm looking for authentic Mexican eats close to home and don't mind spending a bit more money on it, then this is the place I'll go. I've tasted many items on the menu and it's all been good, not great, however; I took my mother there this past Saturday and she ordered prime rib with chipotle mashed potatoes, of which I tried both, and they were actually great, not just good. The meat was super tender, melt in your mouth tender. The restaurant itself was re-vamped a few years back and it was much improved. I read a fellow Yelpers comment on the decor being "tacky." I don't think it's tacky, I think it's chic' and interesting; it's really unlike anything else I've seen before and for that reason, I give them credit for doing something that isn't so ordinary. The bar is awesome; rod iron designs casted in red resin? Either that, or there is a red light underneath giving it the affect of being a bright, red bar. It's really quite beautiful. The one thing that will usually always keep me coming back to Don Jose Tequilas is the service; always polite, friendly and attentive. Keep up the good work guys!

It's been a while since I've been here. I think it's over priced and the food is so-so. The last visit ruined it for me. A friend and I popped in here spontaneously on a Saturday afternoon. There was only one couple in there eating. We waiting a few minutes at the host stand. Finally a friendly guy comes up to greet us and brings us to a table. We ordered a few drinks. He disappears for a bit. When he reemerges he hops behind the bar and starts making our drinks. We order a few dishes and he disappears into the kitchen. Everything was taking forever we joked that he is probably the only one working - the host, bartender, waiter, busboy and chef. He apologized for everything taking so long and offered us some chips and guac. We were starving and thought that was a nice gesture. The food was ok but expensive for a few tiny enchiladas. We finally got the check and he charged us $7 for the guacamole! I was pissed. We were in there for 2 hours and had 2 drinks each and some enchiladas. I chalked up the $7 guacamole as his tip. I will not be going back to this place. So many better choices for Mexican in Providence.

WOMP WOMP. Apparently in Providence, a burrito is the same thing as a wrap. Weirdest burrito ever. We ordered margaritas, which were three star level, and came with green salt. The third star is for the green salt. Strike that, no. I'm sticking with two stars. Green salt be damned! The bartender was weird and got surly with my friend (over Waterfire hahahahaha) at the end of the meal. He was really quite awkward. The food itself... well... my cousin said her tacos tasted like nothing. My veggie burrito may as well have been a "wrap," a sandwich construction which I greatly despise. I'm pretty sure all it was, was vegetables. I'm not sure there was any rice or beans involved. We paid way too much for way too little, bad service, and marginal drinks. It makes me sad that people from Providence find this place above average.

Don Jose is not a good restaurant. Like many other fed hill restaurants it is overpriced and low quality. The margarita was clearly made with some kind of bottled mix and was painfully sweet. The Ceviche I shared with my friends was sloppily made with a sauce that was clearly just ketchup and consisted of some previously frozen and rubbery shrimp and other anonymous sea-life. I have to say that I find it really hard to pay for food which has been cooked by someone who could not care less.

DELICIOUS mexi right here in lil rhody...where you don't go home + want to die after eating it. Or... well... you know... The service was great... a little slow but nothing too bad. The inside of this place is really precious-- feels like you totally aren't on the hill once you walk inside. My bf + I loved both of our meals + the chips + salsa were perfection. They even have a special birthday song + sombrero for the bday girl! Jamie, the owner, is THE nicest man ever! Checkem' out on restaurant. com--there are great deals to be had! Every person in there calls you an 'amigo' + me gustó mucho! If you want a lil authentic mex that doesn't give u a tum ache. This is your kinda place!

Overall experience was very good. I had the burrito dinner and my husband had chicken fajitas and we shared a margarita pitcher (and an appetizer of some form of queso that I was not a fan of). I have to say the food was average and agree with another reviewer that the burritos were odd. I still liked it but it was very full of rice of meet and had little else. The beans and rice side were delicious. Good margaritas and good selection. My husband loved the fajitas. The red and green salt on the rims was unnecessary and took away from the cost of the whole thing. Otherwise, GREAT SERVICE, clean, quiet and ambient, very good selection of food, and overall good food. I will go back but I will order something else. -one last thing, we do like a little spice to our food but the salsa and hot sauce were hotter than expected and I couldn't eat it. The chips were small, oily, and thick but still didn't taste bad.

Don Jose is my "catching up place" every time I go to RI I always order a margarita pitcher and love they get you face-numb tipsy. Now the best nachos you will ever find are here! Machos nachos are a must and to die for. Service is average and it's small place crowded on weekend nights.

My boyfriend and I went here the day before Valentines day. It was not busy, but it is cool inside. We asked the waiter what we should order and he suggested this bowl of stewed meats with tortillas( cant remember what it was called) I did not like it, and it was almost $40.00. The sauce was weird, and my boyfriend pulled out a giant, long, black hair. We didnt complain, just stopped eating it. The pitcher of margarita we got was delicious. Im not sure i'd return to eat there, I thought it was expensive and not that great.

Mexican food is my favorite. But on Federal Hill.... options are limited. However, I thought Don Jose was pretty good. We sat outside the inside seemed loud and dark. But the streetside seating was fine with me on a gorgeous summer night. I love love love salsa but I just liked theirs. It seemed a bit bland. Their margarita's were nice. And my shredded chicken tacos on corn tortillas were pretty good. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. All and all, I thought it was OK.

I went in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. It was my first time going, but the three other people I went with go often and highly recommended it. It was noon and the restaurant was empty. We were seated immediately and we ordered guacamole and chip and a pitcher of sangria. Both were amazing! Sangria was the best I've ever had. I ordered the fish tacos, they were okay, not the best I've had. I tried a bite of the nachos which were delicious, and the re-fried beans were also very good. Waiter was attentive and the owner came over the greet us. Overall good experience. Would definitely go back and try something different.

Husband and I went there a few sat. Nights ago for an early dinner. Decent margaritas ...not great. I liked the fact that they used fresh lime and not the horrible mix. Salsa could be spicier...chips were good. Husband's pork shank special was great and my combo of chile relleno and enchilada was very good. I liked the atmosphere and the restaurant got busy as we were leaving. We would go back.

Once upon a time we would go here every few months. The food has always been good (not great) but the service the past few times has killed this place for me. The past three times we went they messed up one of our orders each time. The straw that broke my back was the last visit. There were two of us. We each ordered and what came out was 1 dish (we ordered 2) of which the entree they served was not what either of us had ordered. On top it was a really long wait. We were so fed up we just took it so we could eat something. I won't be going back anytime soon. I really hope they get their act back together. I'll give it 2 stars since this place was once a great destination but hopefully people have a better recent experience than we did.

The atmosphere was depressingly dark. I've had much better mexican food and I've had worse BUT, I didn't make it through my meal without having to run for the bathroom. When "revenge" hits you that fast, you gotta wonder whats up. We won't be back. On a positive note, the bathroom was very clean so that gives hope that they take just as good care of the kitchen.

I was foaming at the mouth in search for delicious Mexican cuisine the week I moved back home to Providence from Dallas, TX. I had a doubtful mind that I'd find anything better than Tortilla Flats (the worst Mexican in town). I wanted something with a flair of authenticity... I got much more here. The first time I walked into Don Jose's I was greeted by very friendly and smiling faces. The salsa is fresh and the menu selections are well thought out. I do wish they offered tacos, but what they do have is all delicious. My favorite entree is the mixed grill: Molcajete Azteca. A volcanic stone made dish FILLED with Grilled Cactus, Chicken, Steak, Shrimp, Chorizo, Scalion, Viajero Cheese and all of it's sizzling within a mild or spicy Chipolte sauce. You also get tortillas, rice and beans on the side. This is a definite FOOD-GASM! The best Sangria pitchers and FRESH margaritas in town. They offer a great version of Fried Ice Cream too! Don Jose's is especially FUN and crowded on Cinco di Mayo with an outside bar/lounge AND an amazing Mariachi band that walks between the dining room and the outside festivities. They take requests! (Make sure you tip them) This is a perfect spot to take a date or have a casual family meal or enjoy by yourself at the bar. Now, I'm hungry!

The first couple of times I dined here, was pleasant. I used to love their mojitos, however I found that their service is not good on the weekend or when it is busy. I was disappointed after raving about their food and mojitos and took a few friends there last night. Food was mediocre and had to send the mojitos back in exchange for a pitcher of Sangria..needless to say was also mediocre. The interior decor however, is very nice and warming. Mediocre mexican food and drinks ........I would try during the week when it's less busy . It's a hit or miss.

Average tex-mex cuisine for Federal Hill prices and can be hard to park. But it is a fun atmosphere. I had the paella and tried my friends' burritos which were solid (but huuuge). We went for my birthday and they gave me a shot of tequila which i took while wearing a sombrero. fun!

Service is slow, and the food is nothing to brag about. I think the only reason people are here is because It is located on the hill. Had it been anywhere else, I doubt it would still be open.

I was very impressed by the service here. Staff was fairly prompt and attentive. The food was really not that great though the calamari tasted pretty off and the sangria was way too sweet, nachos and quesadilla were decent though. In terms of ambiance decor is pretty tacky and the interior smells musty but if you are looking for low key cheap Mexican this is a decent location.

YUM YUM YUM. Free chips & salsa always equals bonus points in my book, but their salsa is really really good, which gives thema super gold star. This place wins the award for best Chicken Quesadilla, if you ask me. It's sooo tasty, not just chicken in some cheese and a pita. All kinds of yummy spices. I know this is weird, but they also serve this little side salad with all of their meals, and I don't know what it is about it, or what the dressing is (some kind of house or italian), but it's soooooo good. i almost enjoy it as much as I enjoy the meal, haha. Their fajitas are also really good.. aaaaand their enchiladas! I don't even like mexican very much, or at all really.. but this place is delish!

Cute place, decently located on the Hill. The margaritas are phenomenal, and can also be ordered by the pitcher. You'll find a selection of the average Mexican foods everyone knows about, but also a few real dishes from there that you wouldn't find in most places in RI. Service is pretty slow but it's cute, convenient, and fairly priced for that section of town.

This is a great place to enjoy DELICIOUS Mexican cuisine. The appetizers, main course and dessert were all fabulous! Everything we tried was excellent - salad, nachos, enchiladas, the chimichanga, and the tres leches dessert. The wine and drinks are great too. The place is cozy with the lighting, murals; The ambiance made this a highly enjoyable experience. Also, Claudia, our server and all of the staff were very friendly and pleasant. Overall, I feel the service was excellent and extremely prompt. This is a great place for couples and group gatherings for a regular evening out or for any occasion. Everything was a good deal and reasonably price. We will definitely return to Don Jose Tequila's. Don Jose Tequila's also has an upcoming event that sounds super for Cinco de Mayo - is should be lots of fun this May 5th!

My absolute favorite restaurant! The mole sauce is fantastic, and the margaritas are even better. The salad has some interesting mixed greens and some cilantro in it with a light, tangy dressing that's so good I usually eat the entire salad before moving on to the rest of the meal. My go-to meal: Chicken burrito with mole sauce on the side and a side salad. And a Si Senor or Picante margarita.

I have been here a handful of times and I am a fan. Plain & simple it's great Mexican food. I brought a group of out-of-towners here and the restaurant was very accommodating with my fluctuating reservation. I would recommend the chimichangas & their house margarita. Service is quick, but friendly. There tend to be long waits if you go on the weekend so I would recommend making a reservation.

I am puzzled why this restaurant gets any good reviews. My wife and I have been in search of some decent Mexican food since we moved to the Providence area over a year ago. We read all of the hype about Don Jose Tequilas and decided to give it a try. We went on a Friday night and we were worried that it would be crowded but there were plenty of tables available. The place itself is kind of cute and nicely lit. After we were seated, things started going downhill very quickly. They brought over chips and salsa and we should have fled after the first bite. The chips are as thick as pita chips and equally bland with not even a hint of salt. The salsa was the worst I have ever tasted. It's almost as if they threw a tomato in a blender then poured it into a serving dish. My wife ordered a margarita which tasted horrible. I like a little spice with my Mexican food. That was not to be found here. Quacamole? Bland. Enchiladas? Bland. Fajita? Bland. We left here with a very bad taste in our mouths, literally and figuratively. Our search continues...

**UPDATE** I received a response from a "Jaime G" from this restaurant concerning my review. Although there was a short sentence of apology for a bad experience, the majority of the response was a condescending justification of how they are not "a fast food restaurant" and are 'in business to make money." I was then told that they have plenty of regular/new customers, and that our total bill obviously wasn't enought to justify a complaint. I stand by my one star for this place. Any restaurant, especially one that deems themselves "upscale", should pride themselves in offering "upscale" customer service. The staff here does not. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area who offer better food and better service. Its too bad that the management of Don Jose's doesn't value the experience of each and evey customer. Word of mouth is everything!**** We made reservations for Don Jose's for a work get-together/going away party. We were not sure how many people would show but anticipated 15-20. My friend that made the reservation was told this was fine on the phone so she gave her credit card # to reserve. 5 of us arrived first. Our table was set up but we were not allowed to sit at it until "more people showed up." We had to stay at the bar, even though the place was not crowded at all. I will note here that the bartender was the best part of the experience. He was great and worth a good tip (thanks Allen!) The hostess was rude. She seemed to be bothered that our entire party did not show up at the same time ( 18 showed throughout the night, which is what we said.) The food was mediocre and way over-priced. The salsa was tomato water. The chips were ok, but bland. The Tres leches cake tasted like it had been in the fridge too long. Our waitress was not to be found for most of the night, and this place was small, and again, not busy. No soda refills. And who wants to pay $30 for a pitcher of weak margaritas? To top it off, when my friend asked if they would destroy her cc# when they left, she received a lecture from the manager about how 20 people did not show up and next time they would charge $50, Sorry Don Jose's, you will not have that opportunity. You just lost 18 customers, who ironically, work in the customer service industry.

The food here is tasty enough, but I've never been impressed with the service. I've gone here two different times, and on each occasion at least one problem arose. The first time, I went with two friends. The hostess sat us by the door, despite most of the restaurant being empty. The waitress then proceeded to mix up the orders, bringing us a couple of items nowhere near what we asked for and serving meat items to my vegetarian friend. The second time the waitress pretty much ignored me and my date throughout the entire meal. The atmosphere here is nice, and coupling that with the food, sometimes I can justify going. But for the price, I question whether it's worth taking your chances with what the experience will be like.

Very authentic restaurant. Excellent service and menu variations of traditional meals. Guacamole was made to order, also very good flavor. Restaurant was a bit skimpy with salsa and chips, had to requests chips, which was a bit of an annoyance. The margaritas exceeded expectations and complimented the meal nicely. All together, we found the food and service to be excellent and was a nice family of 5 night out.

I have never had a bad meal or server here. The food is always great and fast. My boyfriend and I come here on every birthday because the service and the birthday thing they do with the ice cream and fire is awesome.

I'm from Los Angeles...so I'll admit that my standards for Mexican food is a bit high. I've been to Don Jose a few times and both times have been pretty standard. Its a small place so don't be surprised if you can't find the host to sit down - just wait a minute she'll/he'll come around shortly. Service is usually ok - I hate having to wait for water to be refilled (especially w hen I have a margarita..its not like I'm not paying for drinks here, but come on - its not too much to ask). The drinks are great, I'll give them that. The food is pretty good, but not amazing. It is nice to ask for spicy food and get spicy food - but then its bland spicy. Not a bad place to hit up when you're on the hill - just be realistic about the authentic food.

My best friend and I love it here. We always enjoy our meals and margaritas. Last time we had guacamole made table side and it was incredible. I find it to be a little cramped inside for seating. Last time we went I basically sat with a fake tree over my head, not the most comfortable. Service is prompt and friendly. We will continue to visit!

I've been living on the hill for about two years now, and can not attest to my love of Don Jose's enough. I think I've taken every friend who has visited me from Boston to Jose's at one time or another, as well as any man I've ever dated, or any co-worker who's suggested we spend time after work. It's just that good. I'm sorry to read the reviews from the few people who have had bad experiences, but happy to share that such has bever been the case with me. The day that I moved into Providence, my parents and I went out for lunch at Don Jose's and had a wonderful experience. A week later we enjoyed their brunch, and ended up seated next to our waitress, who was currently off-the-clock and enjoying a meal with her daughter. Despite being on her own time, the waitress, who rememberd us, approached our table briefly to say "hello." That simple exchange had me hooked, and really illustrates what this place is all about - which is just good, friendly people. Now, maybe it's a smaller place and when it gets really busy it gets hectic. I was made to awkwardly wait on my 24th birthday because the restaurant was swarming. But the reality is that these things happen, and that the quality of food and people that you get seriously, seriously outweighs any mediocre experience that one might have. Recently I went in for a girl's night with 5 of my former college roommates and every single one of them raved. Two of them had NEVER had a straight-up margarita before, and could not down the Don Jose gold fast enough (read: they loved them), and another shared about her fajitas, "I don't know WHAT they put on the bottom of this pan, but it's literally the BEST I've ever had." Our server, Hector, was attentive and always ensured that our margarita glasses were full and that we knew what was good, what we were ordering, when it was coming, and never had to go looking for him. On a side note, the ambiance of the place is great and it boasts one of the most beautiful bars I've ever seen. I think I say that to every person I've ever taken there. And if you HAVE been part of that very, very minute group that only had a mediocre experience, I strongly suggest you give it another chance. I would be thoroughly surprised if your mind wasn't change.

I love this restaurant. I have been there, oh let's say 1 million times. The restaurant is clean, pretty and it gets busy. The parking is good because they have a lot at the back of the restaurant. The staff is wonderful. Need I go on about the cuisine? Try out their many brands of fine tequilas. I'm on the flautas now! Dios mio! I never have room for dessert but the Flan is so good.

The food is your typical American Mexican restaurant fair, which is not a bad thing. They use shredded chicken which is a plus for me. The decor is a bit dated yet still cozy. The service was average. I would return.

Love this place, one of the best authentic places I have found in RI. I come here often and it is always a pleasure. The service is always great and the food and drinks are even better. They offer complimentray valet parking on Friday and Saturday's. Reservations are iffy, sometimes they take them sometimes they don't. Sometimes they tell you they will take it but they don't actually record it, so when you get there you like the idiot who doesn't have a reservation. I highly recommend the veggie tamale with the pumpkin seeds and spinach, it is the best! It is a little on the pricey side but well worth it, and you will always have left overs! The Chile Relano is my favorite!

I was extremely impressed with this restaurant after reading mixed reviews on Yelp. Clearly, things have changed over time, as if one looks at the trend, recently, this place has been doing better in recent times.... To start, I had a great margarita. They were willing to customize it a bit as I wanted to go for the Hornitos anejo with just the simple lime juice and grand marinier, instead of the other combinations they offered on the menu. They bring you complimentary chips and what I will call medium heat salsa. We also asked for a mild version (very good), and the waiter offered to bring me some chipotle salsa. The medium and chipotle salsa flavors were out of this world, and I can't wait to have more, and also try to recreate the flavors. We had the machos nachos for an appetizer, and they were great. Huge pile of chips over refried beans, topped with cheese and other stuff. For the main meal we had the Molcajete. This was amazing, and would highly suggest it. The only negative was that the steak was a little over cooked, but this is certainly not worth removing a star. Next time, I will ask for the steak cooked medium rare. With the margarita, some mezcal, and two glasses of wine, the bill came to 82 without tip, what I would consider a great deal for all the food, and drinks we had. Coupled with the quality, this place can't be beat. I will certainly make a trip down to Providence just to eat at this place.

Just moved to Providence from Charleston, SC and this was hands down the worst Mexican food that I have ever eaten. We were sat quickly and that is because the place was empty. The server took forever to greet us and then took forever to bring out margaritas. They tasted like water. We had to ask for chips and never received them. The food was slow cold and tasteless. There was not even pepper on the table to add any flavor. We will not be gonig back ever to this place. I still do not understand all the rave reviews of this place. Obviously the cook normally there was on vacation today. Will not be back at all.

I came here with a group of 12 for a Meetup event. It was a Saturday night, so the place got packed quickly (it's pretty small) and was very loud by the time we left (around 8). The interior is beautiful, with murals on the walls and stonework on the floors. The margaritas were great and I enjoyed my shrimp in the tequila-lime sauce. In fact, this is the best Mexican food I have had since moving to MA. Everyone seemed to really enjoy their food, and I thought the prices were reasonable. I would definitely come back!

Trendy, cozy & fun! We met some great people while dining at the bar.... Alan makes a mean margarita & preps the best Tequila shot I've ever had! The food is fantastic and they have great specials. You can't go wrong :) Great place to go with friends or a date!

The Good: Large portions on alot of the dishes. I had the fajitas...very tastey. Also, the margaritas were great as well. The staff was very friendly. The Not-So-Good: I called ahead to make a reservation, as one of the reviewers on here advised that we do. The guy that answered (which we later surmised was the bartender) said there was no need...I asked if he would "just take my name down". He agreed, but I was pretty sure he didn't. Sure enough, when we got there there was a wait and our name had not been taken down...others went before us who had secured actual reservations. It's not that we had a terrible wait or anything, it was just strange. Later we figured it must have been the bartender because we were made to sit at the bar and order drinks, which I'd imagine is the only way he makes money. Also, "free chips" is only for the first round, which took a while to get. A second one is not free, which we learned when we got our check.

My number one rule when it comes to Mexican food is that it must be well seasoned. Don Jose Tequila's accomplishes this and more! I've been here on the weekend when it was super busy as well as during the week. I'd recommend a reservation on a Friday or Saturday night. The service is always pretty consistent and the waitresses are always quick to return with refills. Last night, my husband and I ordered Tapatia Margaritas (the addition of pineapple juice makes this drink!), Nachos Machos, Chicken Tacos, and the Beef Chimichanga Burrito. My favorites was definitely the Margarita and the nachos. The nachos had so many toppings that we didn't end up with any naked chips leftover at the end - a sign of truly great nachos! I noticed that both couples next to us had the mixed grill, we'll definitely be back to try that!

Food is as authentic as it gets..everytime I get a craving for some Mexican, this is my first choice. Went here for dinner tonight and the place was moderately busy, hence the 10 minutes before someone came to our table for drinks, but I understand because they tend to be short staffed at times. No complaints at all; highly recommended, but stay away from the Habanero Hot Sauce!

  • Sarah D.

Best Mexican in Rhode Island! The tables were dimly lit and the booths were cozy, this place is the real deal. The chips, salsa, and guacamole are out of control good! The tables are close together, which makes the night a little more interesting allowing you to listen and judge the people next to you. As a vegetarian sometimes eating out can be a less than enjoyable experience, but I had the veggie fajitas and they are to date, the best I have ever had! So I ask why are you still reading this and not on your way? Go!

Today was my first time at don jose's awesome maragritas and perfect braised goat shank, don't be scared to try it. Chips and salsa was authentic though the decor was a little juvenile. Service was slow and disorganized but overall a good time

I had lunch here just recently but haven't been in since the interior was improved by none other than Kyla Coburn! She's everywhere. Its definitely more intimate, inviting and lovely inside. I stuck with the brunch menu, order the hash with corn, potatoes and chorizo with grilled chicken, it was tastey, yet dry, definitely needed the cheese melted within the dish and not on the side. My two dining peeps, had enchiladas and something else, but they both sunk into a food coma and ate as much as they could, massive plates of food, smoking hot and filling. I am not the biggest fan of this particular mexican restuarant, but its worth it for brunch.

I really like Don Jose's! The restaurant is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. We went to just grab a beer and they brought us chips and salsa and we went back a few nights later for dinner. They have a pretty good pre-fix type special for weekdays, 19.95 for an app, entree and dessert. We had nachos, enchiladas and burritos, and tres leches and an amazing chocolate cake baked in a corn husk ( I forgot the name..) The nachos were better than average nachos, along with the entrees. The desserts were phenomenal though!! They have a pretty good Mexican beer selection (no draft though) and the house margarite was delicious!! We will definitely be back to try some of the more adventurous dishes.

I loooove Mexican food, good company, and a tasty margarita. I have been to Don Jose for every occasion and have had all of the above on each trip. The burrito is possibly the best I've ever had. Their margaritas can be a bit sweet, but usually they're the perfect mix. I recommend this to all my friends. The service has always been great and it's never been more than 5 minutes before I'm seated. Definitely check out Don Jose's!

Not really what I expected - no burritos on the menu - but since my kid asked, the waited said he'd take care of it - cool. My plate was off the chain! Shrimp, beef, chicken - and get this - cactus! You can tell, I'm not the most adventurous, but I ate it, and it was pretty good - the steak, chicken and shrimp were grilled - delicious! Try the sangria - what a surprise! After my first glass, I got a pitcher to share. All told, we had seven very, very happy people. Not bad.

This is so typical of employees or management of a restaurant who obviously read the reviews on this site to bombard the site with bogus reviews to offset the negative ones. The telling fact is the 1 or 2 reviews all within 1 or 2 days or hours of each other. Are the employees or management of Don Jose really that insecure of their restaurant that they have to resort to this. Do you actually think the regular visitors and reviewers of this site are that stupid that we can not see what is going on. With all that said here is my review of the place. This maybe authentic Mexican or close to it but that does not mean it is good. Reviews exceeding 3 stars for this place is definitely pushing it, 2-3 closer to the real experience. The authentic chips are the size of hockey pucks with no salt. Main courses are very bland and are expensive for a Mexican restaurant. On my last visit for a pitcher of margaritas, 1 appetizer, 2 main courses cost $90.00! No one is going to convince me that Mexican food should be this expensive. When I think Mexican I think inexpensive. Maybe the free shots they give for those birthday celebrations are affecting people's reviews, for the worst unfortunately. To the employees and management I have one thing to say, grow up. If your establishment is good and consistent in the long run the good reviews will far out pace the bad ones, if not then let those authentic hockey puck of chips fall where they may. Has anyone been to the Restaurant Depot, can you buy those chips there?

This is a solid 3. Nothing spectacular. Small and dark inside. It is maddening that when serving fajitas, all you get is a thimble size of sour cream, and guacamole. We were billed for the additional sour cream we asked for, which, believe me came out in another small container. The sides for the fajitas: lettuce, tomato, re-fried beans were also a smaller size serving then we are accustomed to. Nothing here to rave about.

Enjoy!

I've been here twice... Great service, great food, great drinks. However, the price is a little much. I'm from California where the Mexican food and drinks are superb and the real deal... This is the closest you're gonna get in Rhode Island, so I guess that's why they're pricier. They're pretty dead at around 2 so if you need some quiet time and a drink, it's the best time to go since it gets pretty busy at night. However I would recommend this place

My husband & I have been here several times, and it's been great every time!! Took the kids with us tonight and they loved the tacos.. Service is always excellent. We tend to go earlier in the evening (like 6ish) it's gets way busier after 7ish- it's a smaller place, so tables fill up quick. We are big fans of Mexican food, and this place tops our charts for one of the best places with food and atmosphere... Highly recommend.. Margaritas are fabulous! Free valet parking is also a bonus on the busier weekend days when parking is hard to find.

Yum!

We've been here a couple of times. Our most recent time was great! Service was fantastic. We went for lunch... Really wasn't busy at all. Past experiences with the service was also fantastic. Food quality was awesome!! We both had quesadillas, it was great. No complaints here, just a cool mexican joint! Check it out,, u won't be sry.

Trendy, cozy & fun! We met some great people while dining at the bar.... Alan makes a mean margarita & preps the best Tequila shot I've ever had! The food is fantastic and they have great specials. You can't go wrong :) Great place to go with friends or a date!

  • Geoff R.

Not bad.
