What a disappointment Where do I begin to address what was wrong with my dining experience at Capriccio. I am a RI native now living in DC but visiting the area with a friend who wanted to experience some authentic Italian cuisine. Capriccio was always a wonderful choice for that. I have dined all over the world at some of the best restaurants and was excited to show off a home town favorite. We arrived for our reservation on time and were seated in the corner which surprised me since the restaurant was mostly empty. Our waiter arrived as soon as we sat down and the first words out of his mouth were "do you need me to take that away from you". This was addressed to my dining partner who had her phone in her hand but was not on the phone. She was somewhat confused by his comment and then he followed with, "you don't want to get my second reminder" He then gave us menus and walked away. The tone of the evening was set. My dining partner, a surgeon who had checked on a patient while we valet parked the car, was completely taken aback by the rudeness of our waiter. She was not on her phone, there was no talking to disrupt the other diners, she simply had the phone in her hand and was putting it away. The rest of the evening was no different. Our waiter rushed though the specials barely returned to the table to ask if we were enjoying our meal and forget about refilling our glasses with our $100+ bottle of wine. The only enjoyable part of the evening was the food. It was delicious but in no way made up for the atmosphere our waiter created. Our waiter was condescending, abrupt and his behavior was completely unacceptable. Maybe our waiter thought that since we were two women dining together he didn't have to put in any effort. Clearly we know he could since we both witnessed him showering the nearby tables with attention. An embarrassing representation of dining at a highly rated RI restaurant.

I would rate it lower if there is an option for that. The place is way overrated the waiting staff are old hard of hearing wayyyyyy too slow. I went with bunch of friends and none of us liked their food that's how bad this place is. It's just an average restaurant all the hype is for nothing.

Enjoyed dinner there last night for the first time. My husband had the Lamb Wellington special and I had their Bay Scallops with Risotto special. It was amazing. Incredible food, great atmosphere, and impeccable service. This is our new "fancy" restaurant.

I have dined at Capriccio at least a dozen times but not in the last 8 years. I am happy to report that the atmosphere, the dinner the service was all just fantastic. I only wish they would bring back the piano player in the bar area, if they had one we would have stayed longer. As for "it's expensive". It may be higher than most Italian restaurants but the quality is reflected in the "package". Pay the price it's worth it! Love the valet parking as well.

I went with my husband on a Friday night. The place is very romantic and beautiful inside. The food was good not amazing but I'm more disappointed in the service part of it. I didn't expect to have such an un-attentive waiter. Observing the restaurant, every waiter just looked as though they were on point, enthusiastic about the menu and all about servicing their customers. We went early so we were probably the youngest couple in there at the time around 6:30ish. I'm not sure if it was done on purpose because we are young and they don't think we go out much but we got the newer waiter. He had trouble reciting the menu which is fine, I wasn't upset about that but he seemed to start to disappear from the middle of the dinner. The Burrata cheese appetizer was melt in your mouth good it came with a roasted pear and was just so delicious. My husband got the Beef Wellington which he loved and ate everything although the waiter forgot about his side dish. I got the Truffle Veal dish which I was happy with but not blown away. My side of pasta came as I was finishing my meal and by then I was all set. The worst part of it was he asked if we wanted dessert and I said yes so he hands me the menu and I'm pretty sure he is supposed come out with a tray of what they have or at least a description. Well he never came back. We waited 15 minutes and he was nowhere in sight so we asked another waited to find him and he said he'd be right over. Another 15 minutes later he finally comes over and we ask for the check, mind you no apologies for disappearing or what's worse not even mentioning anything about me wanting dessert! I did notice he coincidentally waited on the other 2 young couples in the restaurant which I think proves my point. It was just sad because it was MY first time eating there and I thought I was going to be wowed by service especially when all around me the waiters seemed so passionate about the food there. Oh well back to the Hill we go I suppose.

Baby Arugula Salad with a hint of Truffle Oil- the best salad I've had since I don't know when. Calamari Frits with Italian Pepper is also quite good. House Chianti is really a perfect match for the steak- I think it was a sirloin.

I've been going to Capprico's for years now and I was disappointed to have to only give it 1 star for this past Friday nights dinner. Night started off with a bug in my husbands drink, then small bugs flying around while we all tried to eat our appetizers. The drink was fixed no problem but the flying bugs nothing we could do. I ordered the Lobster and Pasta dish and my lobster tasted like ammonia, when I googled it said that the lobster had been dead to long and shouldn't be eaten at that point. So the rest of the night I worried being 4 months pregnant that I had eaten bad shell fish and worried I was going to be sick...thankfully I didn't! Better luck next time...which wont be for a while, sorry Cappricio's

I had gone to Capriccio years ago and have never been back. My husband and I used to go there often to listen to jazz music downstairs and enjoy appetizers, etc. A few years later my husband surprised me with dinner there and later a show. I ordered a filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare. It was very well done. It was so awful I had to drown it in steak sauce just to eat the small amount I ate. A $50 piece of steak was ruined and I never went back. Too bad because I love great steak but sadly I have no desire to eat there again.

I'm confused. Perhaps I got ahead of myself when I was picturing Pauly Walnuts and Chris-tu-fuh in a super-elegant Italian joint, but, well... I was. This IS Providence and this IS Capriccio, after all. I did see a few ladies in glittery dresses and ill-fitting soes, and I did see a few big guys with thick accents, and I did have my vino poured by a charming man from Sorrento, but did I feel the magic? Not so much. Our waiter was new, and seemed very nervous. There were a ton of specials in addition to the massive 50,000-page menu, which was slightly overwhelming. I decided to play it safe and go with the Black Angus strip steak. It was presented beautifully, but it was a tad over-cooked and tasted heavily of char. The accompanying mashed taters were scrumps, and the sauce was perfect. What I really loved about Capriccio was the building - really beautiful, charming and old city PVD. The restaurant is in the lower level, and the exposed brick floors have a thick glaze over them that ads such elegance. All of the waiters (no waitresses, please note) are dressed in sharp tuxedos and look as neat as a pin. They even come flambe certain items table-side, which is so old-school I can't even stand it. I wish I had ordered the shrimp, as the man at the table next to me did, so that I could get a fron-row seat and what smelled like a divine meal. Next time!

This is by far one of my favorite Italian restaurants. The price is on the high side, so be ready to pay. However, it is worth every penny. The service is top-notch. Great place for a date or special occasion. Also, I good place to go with old friends and hang out in a relaxed, non-rushed environment. EVERYTHING on the menu is incredible. Osso Bucco USED to be my favorite, but they discontinued it. I am sure the desserts are great, but we never have room because the serving sizes are so large. Call ahead and make a reservation.

Capriccio is both the most expensive and best fine dining experience I have had. I was in Providence for a work conference and was invited with a group to dinner at this fine restaurant. From arriving at the eatery, I was blown away by the ambiance and class of the place. You definitely need to dress it up. After a few drinks at the bar, our group was brought to a private room. The room was elegant and the waiters were fantastic with an eye for top service. Our group (20 of us) ordered one of every appetizer so I got to sample all of them. I especially liked the smoked salmon and mushrooms. For dinner, I went with the recommendation of our driver which was the Osso Bucco. It was fantastic and maybe the best piece of veal I have ever eaten. The wine list was extensive and all the one's I sampled were excellent. I was happy that I was not paying the check. I definitely recommend Capriccio for a fine dining experience. It is pricey but well worth the money in my book. I will definitely visit again the next time I am in Providence.

I did not believe it myself. Why would all the good Italian restaurants be in Providence? I thought Boston had the North End which is supposed to blow my mind but yet I keep trying the places there and endlessly dissapointed. My fav Italian spot is actually in Fenway.. okay, this is besides the point... We came in here after the beach looking less than appropriate for a place where the waiters wear bow ties. I loved the decor.. it's in the basement. It's date appropriate.. definitely. Free valet.. you just need to tip them. I found parking down the street but I was also there at 9 pm. I actually really loved the food. We ended up eating at the bar.. and had two appetizers and a main course which they split graciously for us without asking. Great service. On to the food... 1. Clams with white wine sauce.. not my favorite but they were decent. There are a lot of onions in this dish so if you're not an onion lover.. you will not like this. They were littleneck clams though which are delicious. None of the clams were empty of meat or completely closed... so it was good. 2. Risotto rice balls.. also not the best I have ever had.. but the mushrooms stuffed in them was sooo good. I didn't like the brown gravy sauce.. I am a fan of the red sauce. 3. Lobster with angel hair.. that was really really REALLY good. Chunks of lobster with a creamy tomato sauce. Loved it!

I have been to Capriccio with my boyfriend two times in the past two years. Honestly, if I were rating the food alone, it would probably be three or four stars. It's one of the classier restaurants in Providence. The food is solid, but nothing spectacular, especially for the price. I'd much prefer spending a little more and getting something truly special in NYC. The horrible part about Capriccio is its consistently condescending service each and every time. Maybe it's because we're young, 20 year olds, who are not necessarily in a suit (but we do dress appropriate for the occasion). But it doesn't matter. No matter who walks into your restaurant is your customer, and each should be treated properly. At the end of the evening, we are still paying as anyone else in the restaurant, and you're providing a service to me. If Robuchon in Paris, Caprice in Hong Kong, and Le Bernardin in NYC can provide personable and respectful service to us young college students, I'd expect Capriccio to as well. But no. On Valentine's Day last year, we made a reservation well in advance. When we got there, we were told that our table is not ready (which is fine, considering it's probably one of the busiest nights of the year), and for us to take a seat at the bar. Sure. That's until when I see multiple parties (of 2 as well) who walk in after us get seated immediately while I'm relegated to the bar with zero attention for AN HOUR. Not to mention, once we're seated after many complaints, our server seemed to think it's fine to ignore us as well. This week, thinking that last time was just a one-off thing, we decided to give Capriccio another shot given the Restaurant Week deal. We called in an hour ahead to ask if there's space for lunch, and they said yes and we left our name. Sounds to me like a reservation. When we showed up, the extremely rude maitre d promptly told us that he doesn't see our name and that there's nothing he could do about since they're full at the moment. Not a single apology, even after I started getting pissed off and telling him this is absolutely unprofessional. With that, I will never visit Capriccio again. Truly, who do you think you are? I'm a paying customer at the end of the day and I don't need your arrogance and condescension. Plus, the food isn't anything special.

I guess its time to leave Urbanspoon and join Yelp like everyone else! Here goes. I haven't been to Capriccio's in a long time. We had a $100 gift certificate so decided to go this past Wednesday. It was nearly empty when we arrived at 6:30 (had booked through open table) and it remained dreadfully slow the whole evening. First the good news, the food! And really, that's what is all about. We ordered the special cheese app with some beets and prosciutto. It was tasty but nothing spectacular. I ordered the beef wellington and my girlfriend ordered the scallops and risotto. Both were delicious. The meat was cooked well and the wellington was accompanied with some flavorful potatoes. We ordered a nice bottle of Venetian wine and that was also fantastic. Too full for dessert. The ambiance of the place hasn't changed in years and is certainly not for everyone as it can seem a bit impersonal and stuffy. However, those things are non-issues for me. They still do some table side service, which can be a nice touch when going out for an expensive meal. One of the waiters cut my wellington into perfect portions. Our problem, was not with the service (per se) or the food. About 5 minutes after our wine was poured and before we ordered any food, the valet came to our table to inform us that our car had been hit in the parking lot. There was no major damage, but we were outside dealing with police and the other driver for 45 minutes or so. When we returned it was as if nothing happened, with our wine still on the table. I had informed our waiter of the situation before we had gone outside. Ok, so we eat and enjoy our dinner. Now recall, our car was hit in their lot after their valet parked my car. I really anticipated a comp of some sort. Nothing major, a free app, free dessert. Anything more would have been appreciated, but unnecessary. Nothing. No mention of it. We were totally put off by their lack of interest in our predicament. We never mentioned it again at dinner to our waiter. I guess being more vocal would have probably worked for us, but I would like to think that a situation like this would have garnered a little "old fashioned" customer service on their part.

This place used to be spectacular, however, from the miserable staff to the young manager who smells like a cigarette, the atrocious food, and filthy ambiance, our foursome will never return. ever.

A NYE tradition, dinner at Capriccio's! We have been delighted by many dinners here and we always have a fantastic experience every time. The service is impeccable, our server even went the extra step & offered to take a picture of us after dinner near a holiday decorated area to remember our evening. I try to order something new even if it is just a special appetizer. Last night I treated myself to the Foie gras appetizer. It lived up to the hype. The 4 complex levels of each savory bite started my dinner off with extremely high expectations. Of course with every visit at least one person in our party will order the Flambe not only because the taste is out of this world but we look forward to seeing Enzo the flambe chef, he completes the night with his expertise and interesting table talk. He told us last night he had been Capriccio's flambe chef for 40 yrs! In a city that is filled with what seems to be trendy fine dinning establishments Capriccio's still stands out as a indulgent classic dinning experience.

I checked out Capriccio twice for lunch during restaurant week... the first time because Pot au Feu (where I was originally headed) was closed because of a broken AC, and the second because I had already made reservations to go here with a group. Both times, the soup was easily my favorite course (minestrone and then chicken escarole)! The first time I had the stuffed veal and was disappointed, as the veal was fatty (I didn't even think this was possible) and the stuffing was somewhat boring compared to what I had read on the menu. My favorite part was the mashed potato and zucchini sides. The second time I had the sole grenobloise and although it was mostly good, I thought it was very under-seasoned. My sister had the pork loin and said it was overcooked and somewhat dry. Dessert was fine, but the tiramisu was sub-par compared to others I've had (the layers weren't quite soaked enough for my liking), and the creme caramel was good, but nothing amazing. Although the service was attentive, it was incredibly slow. Especially for lunch. The first time I was there the place was quiet, and yet my entree took forever to arrive. The second time the place was full and all of our food (including the soups) took an eternity. Lunch should never take that long, especially when the soup and dessert is pretty much prepared already. All in all, a bit of a disappointment. I'm very tempted to give two stars, but I'll offer up three because the waitstaff was so friendly. I can't see myself ever paying full price for a meal here in the future, and even with restaurant weeks of the future, I'd go elsewhere.

First time dining at Capriccio's after living in Providence for many years. Absolutely delicious. The Haddock special was cooked perfectly. The small greens with a vinegar reduction complimented perfectly. The wait staff was very attentive and knowledgable. I listened even as they explained dishes and wine to the tables next to us and each seemed to have a complete knowledge of each dish. The cappuccino after was perfectly prepared. The milk steamed to its sweetness instead of moving to scalding. The Tiramisu dessert melted in your mouth. Really couldn't have asked for more. I was expecting it to be slightly more expensive by all reports but was surprised with the price versus the quality. Definitely worth it. A win in my book. Sorry I waited so long to try it.

Friday night dinner. My wife and I chose two specials and were both highly disappointed. Sushi grade tuna was well over done to the consistency of canned chunk tuna, the duck was chewy, the bread was cold and stale. We were seated two feet away from a party of six who were so loud we couldn't speak to each other. The restaurant is not handicap accessible. It was a waste of our time and money.

Went there for lunch yesterday for the second time. The service is outstanding and both times my food was delicious and delivered exactly as ordered. Always great specials. Highly recommend the calamari appetizer. The place is fancy, but has a very friendly atmosphere.

I am from Boston, but absolutely love going to Providence for dinner, as there are many great restaurants there that rival any in. Boston. That being said, Capriccio is not one of them. After reading many fabulous reviews here, I went there to celebrate a special occasion, and I regret wasting my time, as there is nothing positive that I can say about the experience. First we were seated and then "greeted" by a waiter that was much less than enthusiastic, and seemed to have a major chip on his shoulder. As we were waiting to order our drinks, we noticed a large party to the immediate left that was as obnoxious as they come, sitting just a few feet from us. While this is no fault of the establishment, it set the tone for what would be a rather unremarkable dining experience. While looking at the menu, it seemed like many of their selections were stuck in another generation, as the menu has definitely not kept up with the times. We started with appetizers that were decent at best, but sadly, the best part of the meal. My wife had a seafood pasta dish that, to its credit, had some decent seafood in it, but the pasta was badly overcooked. I had a seafood paella that could only be described as flavorless and disgusting. First of all, it was like soup, which paella is not. Secondly, there was no flavor to it at all. The chef didn't even bother to throw a pinch of salt in the dish, let alone garlic or fresh herbs. The entree description stated that there was duck in it. Well....after an exhaustive search for the elusive fowl, I found two pieces so small that they could have fit on the head of a pin. All in all, the dish was a massive failure. Halfway through the dinner, my wife finished her wine. This fact escaped our waiter, as did everything else, because he never came to ask how our meal was or if we needed anything else. We saw him much later to pay the bill that surely was not worth the food and service that we received. We didn't even bother to stay for coffee or dessert, as we couldn't run out of this place fast enough. I definitely would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially with so many other fantastic restaurants in the Providence area. For this night, Chef Boyardee may have been a better option!

My wife and I finally tried Cappricio's after hearing about it for years. All the good things I heard were true! The food is amazing and service is top notch! The waiter was very knowledgeable and assisted in choosing a bottle of wine. Prices aren't bad compared to other fine dining restaurants around. Great experience, we can't wait to go back!

Company Christmas dinner. Our group of 19 people was seated in a private area so it's hard to know what the ambiance and service would be like at a smaller table. I can vouch for the food, it was very tasty! Appetizers, entrees and dessert, everything was terrific. Rather larger portions. Our service was stellar. Hard to know if we would have had different service with a smaller table (the guy knew he was going to get a massive tip if he catered to us.... and did he ever cater to us!!!) The bar did not skimp on the alcohol in mixed drinks. I plan to go back again to see how the service differs (if at all) and to get a feel for the ambiance of the place. Based on my one experience I'd recommend it!

I have lived in Providence for a number of years now and made it to most restaurants around town but this is the first time I had been to Capriccio. They have valet right out front and then you walk down the stairs into the restaurant. The atmosphere is great and very old italy. It had a great ambiance to it. The menu is vast and it is great to have an idea of what you want before you open up the menu otherwise you can get lost in it. Our waiter service was honestly awful. We felt like he ignored us half the night which is probably why our dinner was almost 3 hours. When ordering entrees he did not even ask us if we wanted to have a salad or pasta as the side and instead when I asked if mine came with a salad he said "if you want" and to me that meant, for an extra cost. I probed him again and found out that it came with my meal. Later in the night he came back and re-asked us how many salads and we asked him again if it came with our meals. It just seemed very odd to me. My mom asked for the dressing on the side and my dad ordered the oil and vinegar but when all 5 salads came out we all had dressing on the side and we all had oil and vinegar (partly because he did not even ask us what dressing we wanted) we all assumed there was just a house dressing when he did not ask. For an appetizer we decided to order an entree and we got the kobe meatballs and penne. Probably the best pasta I have had in a restaurant and amazing meatballs. When our meals were served, my dad got his entree about 5-10 minutes before the rest of us and it lead to an awkward lag. In an upscale restaurant, with 2 waiters for a table, we assumed that they would at least be able to give us all our meal at the same time. We were all kind of annoyed at this point but then we tried the food and it was spectacular. The chef knows what he is doing! Dishes that we ordered include beef wellington, scallops risotto, haddock, filet mignon, and the lemon sol. They were all amazing dishes and I would order any of them again. Overall, the service was awful which is why I have 3 stars but the food was great. Oh, and I loved the chairs, very comfortable.

I took my wife to Capriccio's for our 6th wedding anniversary. It was a good decision. The service was very good starting with the complimentary valet service at the door. It took a while for the Maitre D to get to us despite the restaurant being close to empty. Once we were seated the waiter did a good job taking us through the specials. The food was very well done in terms of presentation and taste. The serving size was very generous and left us no room for dessert. I highly recommend.

went to Capriccio this evening... party of 2. apps were both dynamite - escargot and oysters rock..entrees were steak au pouivre which would have warranted 5 stars but I ordered rare and it came mr- med.......salmon entree was very good-portions are generous- chesecake with strawberries topped off a better than average restaurant experience.- coffee was excellent- service was attentive and polite. look , if we were in NY or Boston the same meal would have been twice the price at least, Capriccio is still consistently good and worth the price.. I will go back for the steak au pouivre, the beef they buy tops any steakhouse in the city, even overcooked.

I waited a long time to post this, in case it might somehow occur to me that this establishment had some reasonable basis for its deplorable conduct. This might be a nice place most of the time, but most unfriendly to the college family crowd. We made a non-cancelable without penalty reservation 4 months before my daughter's graduation. The food was worse than average, but the service was rude, to the point of arguing with my guests that the cold coffee they served was not actually cold. The bill came with a surprise 20% service included (the 20% charge assessed after sales tax), which explains why we got no service. When I complained to the owner, he said it was because the people from the colleges come only once (I wonder why), and never come back, so they have to make sure they get a good tip. I gather the chef must be on board with the "why bother" approach on graduation weekends, because I cannot imagine anyone giving this place more than two stars based on the quality of the food we got. If your child is graduating and you are looking for a nice place to eat, look someplace else, and both you and the restaurant management and staff (which hates your kind) will be happier. I don't think they really deserve one star, but it is the lowest Yelp will let me give them.

Had a fantastic experience here this past week. Have been enjoying the bounty that Providence has to offer restaurant wise for years now, yet this had been my first time at Capriccio's. Had heard mixed reviews over the years from both friends and family - and was very pleasantly surprised. Lovely formal atmosphere, perfect lighting, and not noisy. Our waiter was attentive and very helpful. Food was EXCELLENT. Everyone at the table was impressed with the quality of their dish. Despite being a on the expensive side, it was certainly worth it. Pay attention to the daily special - you won't be dissappointed. The restaurant also allows you to split salads as an appetizer if you please, which was convenient. The only downside was the lack of variety on the wines by the glass. Impressive wine list, but only house wines were available by the glass. It was good wine, however a choice is always nice. Will certainly be returning.

Hmmmmm. For the peanuts my date shelled out, I'm thinking we should have gotten more? The frog leg appetizer was nothing special. The sauce that accompanied the dish did not compliment it. My entree was a seafood dish that was OK at best. My date also ordered seafood, his was a little better. The waiter cracked me up. At first I couldn't decide if his accent was fo' real or part of the "whole scene." I felt like not only did he ignore us for most of our experience, but he also treated me "less than" and I got the feeling it was because I did not have a set of cajones. Unimpressed with this seemingly mafioso establishment.

Completing outdated! I might as well been sitting in a speakeasy worrying about who might show up. The food was "old" as well in terms of cuisine and over priced. With so many modern progressive type restaurants out there to try no need to return to this one.

One of the best dinners I've had in Providence. A classy environment that actually delivers on the food - fresh, good variety, great taste - can't ask for much more. Portions are generally generous as well.

Cappriccio's has had a wonderful reputation--therefore, we decided to make this our destination for my bachelor's degree graduation. BIG mistake. There were so many things wrong with the food I'll try and point out the gist. 1. The pasta is not made in house 2. My husband's steak was tied with butcher's twine because it was the end of the tenderloin, and this dish was 36-. The "foie gras" on it looked awful and they did not do anything special to it. 3. My side salad was horrible, plain dressing, random toppings. 4. Tableside item tasted just like wine pasta 5. There were four of us and my father-in-law ordered a ceasar salad for dinner and bill was still way over 150 6. tableside cloth was filthy 5. desserts are plain I do have to say that they were busy then, but then again my husband works at a 250 per night restaurant and they have superb meals come out of that kitchen... If you're a "true foodie" you'll pick a place like zooma over this place. Oh and the bathrooms were not clean either.

I'd heard about Capriccio's growing up when the expression, "They went to Capriccios!" was seen as evidence of someone's debauched decadence. But last night was the first time I'd ever been and it was better than I expected. The food was standard Italian - no innovative hipster food here, but that's what you would expect. The ingredients were good and it was well executed. Where but RI do you get a side of pasta with your fish entree? The only quibble I have is that the tomato in the local tomato salad special was pretty flavorless, at least compared to the beauties coming out of my garden. Also, there are some pretty dire wines on the wine list and the markup on those bottles seems to be kind of high (i.e. $20 for a $7 wine). You might want to plan to spend a little more and get something drinkable. Overall, given the level of service and food quality, I would say that the prix fixe (correctly pronounced prixie fixie) menu is actually a fantastic value, not the evidence of profligate spending I was led to believe. So do go to Capriccios. But remember, ladies, the line between tacky and classy exists somewhere between faux cheetah and faux zebra. Try not to cross it.

Loved the ambience, quite classy. Great food, dessert and coffee. Loved the risotto and the strawberry cream dessert. The waiter was quite knowledgeable and the overall experience was great.

I rate this "I'm a fan" because I have visited the restaurant 5 times in the past 3 months: twice for dinner, 2 times for lunch, and once just to have drinks and a light bite at the bar. LOVE the bar area. Service is always topnotch, food is always enjoyable.

A decade ago, or a little more, Capriccio was still turning out very high quality meals. Even then, the atmosphere was dated, but it was forgivable thanks to the excellent service and great food. However, the tides have turned. Capriccio needs to upgrade to 2013. I noticed it starting to slip several years ago when I had, I kid you not, canned black California olives in my salad. The bar needs a modernized drink list made from real, fresh ingredients- the "pomegranate" martini I ordered- after having to ask if they made special martinis- was worse than mixing Popov with Kool Aid. Our waiter was earnest but not at the previous Capriccio level of professionalism or speed. Most importantly- the food. Oysters were good and fresh, I will say. I'm someone who likes to order specials in a good restaurant because I expect it to be something interesting that the chef wants to make (versus in a bad restaurant, where it's something that needs to be pushed before it goes rotten). So I went for a pasta special with crab, only to find that there was no crab. Listen. I don't like to make a fuss, I don't get too many date nights, and I'm not looking to complain. I cook from scratch 5/7 nights a week, inspired by Jamie Oliver, Julia Child, etc- I'm still learning, but I try. I grew up in an Italian family eating anchovies, shrimp, lobster, and all types of fish from birth- literally, at a few months old, Nonna loved to feed babies pastina mixed with homemade fish stock, and my grandfather took us clamming on the Cape in summers, as well as netting blue crab in Little Compton to bring home and grill. What I'm trying to say is that I know whether or not there is crab in my pasta, or even crab broth, and there simply wasn't. After I pointed out the lack of "flaked crab" explicitly stated in the special description, my waiter appropriately went back and discussed with the chef, who clearly instructed him to go back and argue with me- he was always polite, and I could tell it pained him to do so, but while he conceded that there was no visible crab meat, there was "crab stock" in the sauce. Let's say there was- which there wasn't- the dish wasn't as described, and even more importantly, wasn't good. It was dull. Capriccio, I don't want to see you die. It was a Saturday and you were empty. Modernize your decor, shrink your menu (and your prices) a bit and Gordon Ramsay yourselves before it's too late. I can't bring myself to come back until you're updated.

Best steak diane I've ever had. The table side flambé is awesome and if you want it done right, by the best guy in the business, you have to ask for Gino. Old school playa, been doing it right for years! And the fresh pasta and fettucini alfredo they make table side is unreal. The beef stroganoff is also amazing with the egg noodles they make right there. It's certainly a bit pricy, but worth every penny if you want truly fantastic Italian. It's very cozy and dimly lit in the subterranean dining area. The back bar is nice too, and the piano player is nice touch.

4 stars because I accept this restaurant for what it is. Pretty good food, great service, and great atmosphere. You have to know what to order before you get here! Some items are great and some are just plain bland! Service: The woman at the coat check area was very nice and welcoming right when we walked in. Bobby gave us great service and recommended a delicious white Italian wine when I told him what we wanted. Really cool old school feel to the restaurant. You feel like you're in a mob movie in here and all the service staff (all men I might add, which was kind of weird) were very attentive Because it was slow during the transition from lunch to dinner we had the princess treatment from all the servers. The restaurant was decorated for XMAS and had beautiful XMAS music on in the background...made it feel more like the holidays being in here. Food: We asked them to make us a caprese salad, which was okay. They used "fresh" mozzarella (I've had fresher), fresh basil, beefsteak tomatoes, and prosciutto. The dish was good, but nothing out of this world. Again though, the extra star for this review because of the service. The server split the caprese on two plates for us and then offered us fresh ground pepper and fresh olive oil, which was a nice touch. Main Course: We ordered 2 of the specials. 1) The pork osso bucco fell off the bone and if it wasn't so big I would've ate every bite! The pork was served over a bed of white beans, swiss chard, and tomatoes. 2) The second dish I had was some of was my friend's shrimp stuffed sole that was dipped in an egg batter, breaded and then baked. I liked the dish, but didn't want more then a bite and was glad I didn't order it. It was served over a bed of mashed potatoes and sauteed baby spinach, which were both very good. Lastly, we got an after dinner drink (bailey's & coffee) and split a cannoli. Both were delicious! The coffee was hot and the cannoli definitely seemed freshly filled. Miscellaneous Comment: The coffee came with a straw in it (that looked like it belonged in a soda) and the mug was on top of a small plate with a doily. They could skip this presentation if they want to claim "fine dining" on their website. It looks cheap. Again not a destination restaurant, but a great spot!

My favorite restaurant in Providence. I love the ambiance and the service is top notch. Great selection of food - seafood, steak, pasta, etc. They treat you like a king here and nothing disappoints. My staple here is the Veal Saltimbocca. Delicious! It is a little on the expensive side so I don't go as often as I would like.

Capriccio is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Providence. I've never had a bad meal and the service is always top notch! It's got a real old school Italian thing going, which increases if you order a nice bottle of wine. Then they REALLY start paying attention to you! I usually get an appetizer special (any of the ones with buratta cheese are amazing) and the beef wellington as a main dish. Highly recommended!

It was fine. Honestly, I can appreciate the old world charm, but the food was not out of this world. In my opinion out of this world is exactly what it should have been for the price. We started with a delicious cabernet and their foie gras. It was fine. I can rave about the figs, but that's about it. The oysters (contuit) that we had were fine as well, probably a poor ordering choice since an oyster is an oyster (besides preference for the flavor of the meat, not necessarily how it's prepared). My husband ordered the Lobster American. It sounded OUTSTANDING on the menu, I couldn't wait to share it. Unfortunately, though, when it arrived we both looked it and then each other and said "Where is the lobster?" It appeared to just be the tail, but there was a bit of claw meat in the risotto (which was tasty). I ordered the beef wellington and really couldn't have more than a few bites. It was just ok. Nothing to write home about, which was disappointing. The crepes Suzette were also fine, and we tried the red velvet marscapone brownie which was unimpressive. I don't usually have such a mediocre experience at a restaurant, but if you're going to choose between this restaurant and a place like Gracie's, run not walk to Gracie's instead. That is the best restaurant in Providence.

This is my favorite restaurant. Period. While not a casual choice, when it's a special occasion, this has become the new go to. There is simply nothing bad on the menu. Everything is 5 star, including the service. From Raw Oysters, Escargot & Lump Crab to start to Beef Wellington, Tournadoes (twin filet in demi glace) and Beef Shortribs (on special last time we went) to stellar seafood dishes like the Lobster Americano and Capellini Cardinale, this place is THE SPOT. And while the flambe dishes aren't quite as amazing as some others, there's certainly a show with the tableside preparation and skyhigh flames licking the ceiling. Drinks are on-point and desserts are satisfying as well. Prices will certainly put a (big) dent in your wallet but it's well worth it for those special occasions - can't recommend this place enough.

Disappointing! Decor and ambiance were amazing - truly one of a kind. Top shelf service at the front of the house and at the bar, but that's where it ends. Cocktails were lacking - not a good pour and not a good taste. While there were remarkable options on the menu, the actual food was terribly unremarkable. We had osso buco, pasta dishes, seafood dishes including salmon, Beof Wellington (a restaurant specialty), and a chef special of stuffed squid. "Completely ordinary" to "not good at all". The service was frustratingly slow. Waited 45 minutes between salads and entrée. Two members of our party had to leave before completion of the meal because it was taking so long. The server was kind enough to bring a cake to the table to celebrate a special occasion, but we ultimately had to ask another waiter to find our waiter so we could get a check. Not going back. Too many other restaurants that really ARE top shelf and don't rest on their laurels.

Excellent food, superb service, great ambiance, variety of options to choose from! I have dined at Capriccio numerous times and have never been disappointed. I love that they cook some of their dishes tableside. The restaurant is a timeless classic.

Capriccio is absolutely breath-taking. When I stepped in the double-doors, I felt like I was walking into a traditiona ristorante in Italy. The decor is old-world and elegant. The tables are classically adorned and quite comfortable. The servers are outfitted in full suits. Dining at Capriccio is more of an experience than a meal. It's the way dining was meant to be: elegant, unhurried, decadent. And the food? Near perfection. Everything was beautifully prepared and elegantly presented. Some dishes stood out more than others. One of the first things that caught my eye was the bread basket. I truly felt like I was back in Italy when it arrived. There were three options: multigrain bread, white Italian bread, and traditional Italian breadsticks (not Olive Garden-esque breadsticks). I would have preferred the bread be warm, but that is my own personal preference. My biggest gripe with the bread was the butter. They served the butter in a dish with ice, making the butter hard and unspreadable. My first course was the sining star of the meal- zucchini rollatini stuffed ricotta and porchetta. The flavors simply exploded with the very fist bite. It was delicate while still being flavorful. The flavors complimented each other amazingly well, truly showcasing the chef's talent. My main course was pan-seared tilapia with baby shrimp, asparagus, and roasted potatoes. While still very good and well-prepared, it didn't shine as much as the appetizer. The sauce used was a tad on the oily side for my personal preference, but the flavor of it was enjoyable. The portion size was absolutely perfect. For dessert, I chose the Vanilla Panna Cotta. The vanilla flavor was quite strong, but the dessert was far too sweet for my taste. A fellow diner enjoyed the dish much more than I did, which doesn't surprise me. I'm quite picky about custardy desserts, and this one did just not win me over. You may love it, however. Overall, I think that Capriccio is a wonderful dining option in Providence. The food is well-prepared and wonderfully executed. The restaurant itself is beautiful. I will likely go again to sample more of the menu and perhaps find that perfect dish that will raise my review that extra star.

We went on Saturday for my birthday. It was water fire. Service was good. Valet which was great because of water fire. Food was outstanding. Everything we ordered from the soup, salad, specials and meals were all great. Best piece of filet I have had in RI. Caesar salad very good. Lobster bisque very good. Entrees all excellent. Celtics lost but would go back in a second. The older lady bartender should smile more other than that awesome time.

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the state. I have been coming here for years since I was a small child. My two favorite meals are the Veal Oscar and the Steak Diane, which is cooked table side. Atmosphere is great, very romantic and I would only suggest this restaurant is kid friendly if you have a very well behaved and well mannered child. I have brought my child here many times and he loves it!!

I can't believe I've lived in Rhode Island for more than twenty years and last night was the first time I dined at Capriccio's. I guess I was always put off by the rumors of it being owned by the mob, it having snobby staff, etc. But my best friend said that he had a fabulous meal there recently, and my fiancee's uncle, who recently visited from Maryland, told her that he had one of the best meals of his life there, so I figured why not give it a shot. They have free valet parking, which is nice for that area, considering what I tipped the guy was about what it would have cost to park in one of the nearby lots (or less for some of them). I wasn't quite sure what to expect when we got there, having heard it's in the building's basement. Well, it is in the basement, but it was kind of neat and romantic, dimly lit but not too dark and gloomy. As we had reservations, we were seated immediately at an oversized two-top. The chairs were really comfy too. The waiters all seemed very serious, almost severe at first, which I guess can be seen as snobby. But partway through the meal, they sort of started busting on each other a bit, which took the edge off a bit. I would say that they are being professional in their severity and seriousness, which I've seen at other high-end restaurants, such as The Spiced Pear in Newport. I will say that they were extremely efficient in their service throughout the entire evening, though, which was appreciated. On to the food. . . we had the calamari appetizer, which they split between two plates before serving us, which I rarely see happening anywhere and which I thought was a nice touch so we didn't have to serve ourselves from a central plate. The calamari was good; not the best I've ever had, but definitely acceptable. A salad was included with our meals, which was again good, not great. My fiancee had the sea bass, which she loved, and I had a halibut special, which was very tasty. For dessert, we had a buffalo cheese cheesecake, which was interesting and yummy. For the amount of food and drinks we had (a couple of martinis each, and a cappucino for me with dessert), the price was quite reasonable. Overall, our experience was quite good. While the food was very good, it wasn't over-the-top fabulous. But the service was quite excellent. We will definitely add Capriccio's to our restaurant rotation. One last note: when the waitstaff is all wearing tuxedos, I have a problem with diners coming in wearing jeans and t-shirts, you know, "grunge wear". . . maybe I'm becoming an old fart, but the groups coming in dressed that way definitely took away something from the atmosphere of the place. It's not like I was wearing a suit, but I did wear a sport coat. Okay, off the soap box. . .

Went here for an anniversary before the water fires this summer. For timing, this was a good place to go on a water fire Saturday, provided you reserve a table. The food overall was pretty good, but I did expect more from the wait staff. A couple of times I was ignored, and one time he left in the middle of me asking something. The food was pretty good, and we got a nice free dessert. Overall, they do a great job, and I think we maybe just got a bit unlucky with a waiter serving (bigger tip) larger tables.

Excellent food. Fabulous wait staff. May or may not be owned by the mob. They spared no expense with this place. Valet parking, a bar/lounge area. Ladies...if you're waiting in the lounge for your table to be ready, the host or a waiter will carry your drink to the table, so don't worry about spilling your martini. If you're intimidated by a large menu, I would not dine here. There were so many things on the menu that I had to ask the waiter what he recommended. After 3 or 4 questions about my tastes later, I had the perfect dinner: the lamb. Their escargots were just ok...I'd order the Kobe carpaccio instead, which was absolutely amazing. Our waiter kept our thirsts well-quenched with his choice of wine - which was rather tasty - water and other drinks. One caveat: watch out for the floors in the main dining area, especially if you're wearing heels. They're super slippery. I nearly ate it on my journey to and from the bathroom.

Food was pretty good. Can't beat the price on the 3 course lunch special. The problem was the service. Went there during the week with a couple of coworkers. Took an hour for us to get our apps when I had to leave to go back to work. After another hour (total of two) my coworkers had to have our desserts boxed. I then ate my entree and dessert at my desk when they got back to work.

Ate there recently for lunch. There were some highs and lows w/food and service for all 4 of us. Calamari app.-amazing & tender! Chicken Paillard-very very bland and dry. Veal Parm-excellent & tender, All the salads- really lacked flavor. Clam app-Oily and bland. Service was attentive but odd. One example, asked about a dish on the menu, response was, " I have no idea how it is, havent had it in so many years ".......what was that??? With so many great places they need to step up their game w/the food, especially since the interior is fabulous, and its a great menu. They really should get a new set of eyes for some quality control and updated flavors because it seems they are resting on old laurels.

I took my wonderful girlfriend here for Valentine's day 2009. I had settled on this restaurant after doing a lot of research on the fine dining options in Providence and was not disappointed. The ambiance is very classy and the waitstaff were attentive, polite and knowledgeable. For such an upscale establishment, I thought the food was priced quite reasonably. No real complaints, would definitely come back again for another such event!

Came here for "date night" during a WaterFire. We had 9pm reservations, got there a bit early and had a cocktail at the bar. It was nice to go a little later in the evening as there was room at the bar and no wait for our table. He had the Saltimbocca alla Vincenzo which he claims was excellent - I wouldn't know because my Boeuf Wellington was so good I refused to try it and waste any valuable space on anything else. We split a cannoli for dessert, which was very nice, I had a delicious tawny port and he had a rusty nail. This place is great for taking your time and enjoying a nice dinner out. We never once felt rushed. The decor is a bit stuffy for a basement restaurant and the tuxedos do feel a bit over-the-top, specifically because many of the diners we saw were loud tourists wearing berkenstocks with socks. Over all, a great night and I would definitely go back.

Capriccio is definitely my favorite spot in Providence for northern Italian food. The entire experience every time that I have been (probably half a dozen before finally getting around to reviewing on yelp) has been fantastic from start to finish. You can not beat it for ambiance. The main dinning room is down a set of stairs in what looks like an old wine cellar. The initial impression of the restaurant the wait staff, tables, chairs, and place-settings ooze class and sophistication which befit the price tag. And although Capriccio's is expensive, around $20-$40 average per entree, it is worth it. The free valet parking and coat check are also nice touches. Capriccio also has one of the better wine lists that I have seen around Providence, with wines from around the world though I usually stick with my favorite northern Italian wines Barolo's, Chianti's, and Brunello's (it is a northern Italian restaurant after all)!!! Also, the bar area makes a very nice strong cocktail, mine being Bombay Sapphire and Tonic. They have a great variety on the menu of steaks, seafood, pasta, chicken, and veal options truly something for everyone's palate. My two favorite entrees are the Veal Osso Bucco and the Beef Wellington. The Wellington is fantastic and a must have considering Capriccio is one of the few places around that even serves it. Finally, I cannot say enough about the wait staff, they are always helpful whether in selecting the right wine or a quick question about the menu. The wait staff is so attentive that you practically take a sip from your wine or water glass and someone is immediately refiling them. I have never felt rushed, but is definitely like a restaurant in Italy, take your time and enjoy the whole experience. If you do that then you might not feel so bad when you get your bill!!! Dinning at Capriccio's is an experience. Although it is pricey it is justified with the quality of the food and service. Certainly not a place for everyday, but definitely worth it for a special occasion.

We went to Capriccio on Christmas eve with our best friends. Being transplanted New Yorkers, the four of us are pretty particular about our Italian Food. I'd have to say that our meal on Christamas Eve was one of the best meals I've ever had. The food was spectacular, the ambiance was festive and classy, and the service was first rate. I've probably been to Capriccio about a dozen times over the years and have never had a bad experience. There are a lot of restaurants in New York that can take some lessons from this place.

I originally went here with my girlfriend to check out dinner for Providence Restaurant Week. Once we arrived we both decided that the regular menu was much more appetizing than what they were offering for the promotion. We started off with the Kobe Beef carpaccio along with the lobster bisque. The carpaccio was great. The shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano was delicious. The lobster bisque was also tasty, however when you get to the bottom of the bowl your stomach does realize that you just ate a pound of butter... She had the gnocchi and I had the pork chops. Her gnocchi was delicious and appeared to be homemade. I ordered my pork chops medium and then were definitely well done. A bit on the dry side actually. However, the portions were sized nicely and the accompanying mashed and asparagus were perfect. In addition to the drinks the tab was actually less than expected. The service was top notch. Not quite sure what other people were referring to when they said the service was snobbish. I found them courteous and professional. Overall the food was good. I'd like to give them another chance on an entree'...

My favorite restaurant in Providence. We have had the pleasure of dining at Capriccio several times over 20 years and every meal is unique and enjoyable. I have never had a bad meal there and to the contrary I have had many of the best meals of my life. Slip through the street-level doors and underground into a classy and cozy atmosphere. The food is phenomenal - fun appetizers, the steaks (and Boeuf Wellington!) are delicious, the seafood always fresh and seasoned to perfection and every pasta dish I have had there would rate near the top of my list. We were thrilled to end up there one night when a visiting chef from Italy was preparing all of the specials, a fantastic idea and indicative of the type of creativity that can be found at Capriccio. We ordered all specials from appetizer through dessert to take advantage of the opportunity and everything was amazing. Sal (the host/manager/owner's son) is always charming and gracious, the waitstaff extremely professional but fun and the wine list is incredible, if a little pricey. It will not be an inexpensive meal but we honestly never think about the price, each meal there has been an experience worth every penny.

i also went to Capriccio for a Graduation celebration with 7 people and it was a terrific experience. What no one is telling you in the other reviews is that they are going or graduating from Johnson and Wales as a chef or in restaurant mgmt and they think they're hot stuff cause they know hot to fry an egg. The real deal is that when you weigh the experience, the location, the variety of food and wine and finally the quality of the food, this place is as good if not a little better. The place has been there longer than these snot noses have been alive. Valet parking, and a few steps down to a semi basement speak easy style restaurant. I hear they have bulletproof glass as well. I was sure to sit with my back to the wall. Our waiter and side flambe waiter had been there for 12 and 18 yrs, so no turnover is a good thing except when you're a snippy college kid who thinks you know it all. Give respect to get it. Secondly when you go to any good restaurant that's well established, try something that they are known for or some of the specials. Kobe Meatballs in pasta, grilled octopus, stuffed zucchini flowers lightly fried, rack of lamb, veal parm and i had the Osso Bucco. The Mom had the duck special . She was happy as a ^&**%%$..I tried , heck we all tried it and it was terrific. The Graduate ( from J&W) went for the steak diane served table side. Terrific Experience , even though the heavy peppercorn sauce was not to his cup of tea, but who are we to complain., He ordered it and it was made just right.. Back to my Osso Bucco...Perfect, from the marrow in the bone to the right amount of fat on the side of the meat. We were so stuffed from diner that we passed on Dessert. Ended up going for some Ben and Jerry's later in the night. As far as the wait staff , i can see why people may have an issue they are a family and it's a busy place. TRY SMILING AND HAVING SOME FUN AND LET DOWN YOUR HAIR and the staff is more than willing to please. FINALLY, a white linen restaurant and your bill is $150 for 4 people and no liquor??? I'd a thrown ya out the door and told ya to go to red lobster. Capriccio, whether you're Italian, in the mob, know someone in the mob or a fan of the sopranos, you'll enjoy.

I have been dining with clients here for the last several years on a regular basis. I have probably eaten here (lunch and dinner) over 30 times. I have tried many of the menu items as have my guests. Let me say that from the time you step out of your car and then get back in it to go home the service is a 10+. The ambiance and food taste and quality is as good as it gets. I have eaten in some of the best Italian restaurants in the north end, new York, and other parts of the country and sal and staff are right there on point with the best of them. Their wine list is awesome with excellent selections at most price points. They also will pretty much make you what ever you want just ask.

Easily the best in ri. People who rate this place low are too naive to know what they are looking at. I have been coming here for years and as a chef i have to say its unbelievable what this place offers. Beef wellington cooked to order, ostrich, quail, venison, veal rib chops, kobe beef, chicken soup with consume` prepared as broth, frois gras imported from France, heirloom tomatoes when in season and the list goes on and on. So why even bother coming here and order a fish fillet and cheesecake? Go to chelos for that. Come here with an open mind an wallet and be prepared to be wowed with dishes not found anywhere else in RI. The wine list is also amazing, including extraordinary vintages of Bordeaux. Many things are great here my favorites include the wellington, kobe beef, duck, squash flower app, all veal dishes. Come here. Service is second to none, and live piano music in the bar will top off an already unbelievable dining experience.

This restaurant is highly recommended by many and is one of the more expensive places in Providence for Italian food. The location is ideal sitting across from the river on a corner, parking is terrible but there are valets and garages nearby. The interior is low ceilings and a bit cramped. It is always crowded so I recommend making a reservation. The staff from start to finish is awful. They treat you poorly and are a bit snobby. Plus this place is a little dated. Surrounded by trendy uopscale restaurants opening everyday, this place needs an upgrading. The decor is outdated and the customers are an older crowd. the menu is a variety of creative Italian dishes and a good selection of both seafood and meat dishes. The portions are large enough and the wine list is extensive. The service is very slow and not enough staff it seems to go around. The prices are of course very high but with the amount of food you get it evens out. there are plenty of other places to try and Providence. this place is worth a try, but not much more than that.

Had a fantastic dinner at Capriccio's on Tuesday August 3rd. The ambiance is wonderful and the food and service could not have been better. This has always been a favorite place to celebrate a special occasion.

Enjoyed the 3-course prix fixe luncheon in a beautiful setting. A choice of salads or soup of the day, unique entrees, and two desserts to choose from. A wonderful opportunity to sample their food in a more casual time. The service was exceptional. I had for my first course the Roasted Beet Salad with baby arugula, toasted walnuts, ricotta salata, with a lemon-honey vinaigrette. For my main course I had Tilapia Piccante with baby shrimp, asparagus, roasted potatoes, and the tiramisu for dessert. The bread was warm and served with soften butter. Generous full portions, well worth the price.

First the good things about this restaurant: the ambience is very good, and the waiters are very professional and polite. The wine list is impressive. The food, however, is simply mediocre. The pork loin I ordered was very oily and bland. The portion was huge, which might count as a plus for some but not for me. I ordered al dianto riso as appetizer which was pretty good, though. Overall, my impression is that the dishes are priced as such because they have to pay for the tuxedo worn by their waiters, not for hiring great cooks..

Took my wife out for her Birthday... We were going to a show after dinner. Bobby (our waiter) was incredible. Got all our food out in a timely but not rushed manner while still getting us out at the exact time I hoped for. We both orderd the Steak Dianne served table side that was so delicious we wished the next day we had left overs. Once again, you did it guys, 2 thumbs up to all the staff!!! Best restaraunt in Providence!!

Capriccio is a higher end Italian restaurant in downtown Providence. It provides a very nice atmosphere to have dinner. I ordered the Boeuf Wellington. It was actually the first time I ever ate a Boeuf Wellington. The entrée was well cooked and I definitely enjoyed it as I devoured all of it. Of course, it is pricey. If you are just passing by Providence, I would definitely recommend the other restaurants instead. Nevertheless, Capriccio is a great choice if you want something that is higher end. I would definitely go there for a business related dinner. If you are passing by Providence and looking for recommendations, please see rookerville.com/2015/09/…

I enjoyed another great night out at Capriccio's last evening. We had a party of five and could not have been more satisfied with the quality of food and extraordinary service. Capriccio's is at the same time a great steak, seafood and Italian restaurant with an ambiance unique to itself. Looking forward to returning soon.

We coincidently ended up here during restaurant week. The service is not good here. They were more concerned with trying to turn the table over than offering a good dining experience. We felt so rushed. The waiter was literally pulling my plate away while I was still eating. Actually I felt like the wait staff were sort of jerks Don't come here for the service. On to the food....

Long story short...went inside and my wife and I stood at the door for 5 mins. No hostess / about 5 waiters walked by without saying a word to us. I thought it was bingo night because most of the patrons were 60 plus. I have Nothing against older ones but the decor / and guest really emphasize out of date! We turned around...walked out! Valet guy was nice, but he was bewildered because he just parked my car. I told him what happened and he made mention he could get us a table. I respectfully declined and tipped him $5. Was not his fault for this experience but I will not go back.

I had to update this review based on my visit today. I was sorely disappointed last time as you can clearly see from my last review. Yeesh, sorry I was a little harsh but hey I was let down. This time was a pleasure. Less is more but I spoke to someone on yelp who turned the whole situation around. He took a negative experience and made it a positive! I had the car valet parked and got the classic door opening and greeting then off to a nice table (not in the dark) and our server Larry was great. He was really friendly and funny. He gave us the regular menu and the restaurant menu (without judgment), then told us over 5 different appetizer and dinner specials, I have no idea how he remembered all that, I know I didn't... We all decided to not go with the restaurant week menu because there were so many other good choices. My mom and I ordered the salmon with apple cider-maple glaze, just enough sweetness, it came with polenta cake, (I traded those in for whipped potatoes.....amazing) and a side of asparagus with all the sharp crunchy parts removed, how nice...and really good. Gail tried the haddock which was served over a tomato and fish fumet, (which is a fancy word for broth), with spinach and caramelized onion goodness. Of course I had the vanilla crème brulee (my favorite dessert in the universe), which was served in a deeper bowl than I have had before and not all flat like they normally come, it is officially the best one I have had. Perfect. I was full but I still ate the whole thing. My mom tried the chocolate mousse, it was literally the most chocolaty thing I have had in a long, long time, awesome, I should have got that with a glass of port. :) Anyways, I thought it was only fair to rewrite my review because I finally gave this place a second chance and had the experience that I had originally hoped for. I am glad that yelp exists, it is a great outlet for expressing ones opinions about local places, getting info, and getting feedback. I write very few negative reviews and I am so glad that I can say Capriccios is not on that list.

Great dinner as always, love this place. I probably should change it up a little and have something other than Beef Wellington but it is the best.

I took my mother to Capriccio's for her 40th birthday given the fine reputation of this establishment. She enjoyed it, but I found it not so pleasing. The servers wore tuxedos which helped the presentation of the restaurant but our sever was quite snobby. I personally did not enjoy my entree (Veal Oscar) it was bland and overpriced. I did not feel welcome by the staff and was disappointed given all the good things I've heard about this place.

Old school where people dress for dinner and the service is impeccable ; and while the ambiance is not trendy; it's dark and cozy. My wife and I celebrated a birthday and it was a perfect night. The food was great (wife had squid ink pasta, beet salad; I had squash blossoms and a sliced steak pasta side). The amazing thing was that the price for the quality of food was quite reasonable. Tip: order the blossoms off the menu; just ask the waiter if they have them

Im not going to lie. Before I walked in I thought this place was going to be a stuffy little tightly squeezed tight quartered establishment with stiff white linens but it is quite the opposite. I walked in with a friend of mines, we were 20minites early for our reservations (it was snowing outside and gross, so we decided to leave a little earlier) and was immediately greeted by a lovely host awho guided us to the bar so we could wait for our table. The bar was awesome. I think its my favorite thing about this place. It felt like a private den where you could smoke cigars and drink some cognac, in their plush cozy seats. The bartender was extremely nice. I chugged my Reisling and headed to my table. The lighting is intimate and cozy. The bread and butter was really good. I had trouble picking an entree and the maitre d was extremely helpful. I finally settled on the Zuppa Di Pesce. The broth/sauce was really good, the capellini was even better, grated parm was spot on. The seafood was a disaster. It was completely over cooked and rubbery. I wish it werent. The best dish on the table was certainly my boys dish. He got the duck cooked in Grand Marnier. It was absolutely the best thing ive ever bitten into in my entire life. I would certainly go back because the entire experience was awesome. But im coming for that duck.

I loved the entire experience! The restaurant is so pretty! The service was the best! The food!!!! I am definitely going back! The escargot was so tender! The buratta was amazing! And steak diane was perfectly flavored & cooked table side. The pasta & sauce was also very good! The coat room attendant was a very sweet woman, very pretty and very well dressed! Even she was a delight! I would have visited sooner but several times I arrived too early in the day and they weren't open yet. Once I went on New Year's Day and they were closed for the holiday. I'm grateful I finally was able to enjoy this experience with my husband

We heard from a friend that Capriccio was his favorite Italian restaurant in Providence, so my BF and I decided to give it a try. Right now, until Labor Day, they offer their 3-course meal - a la Restaurant Week style for $34.95. The choices were abundant... APPETIZERS Fresh Soup of the Day Caesar Salad Roasted Beet & Frisée Salad Arancini di Riso Carpaccio Seafood Cake Mussels Zuppa MAIN COURSES TO CHOOSE FROM.... Atlantic Salmon Porcini-Dusted Sea Scallops Veal Parmigiana Pork Loin Valdostana Chicken Capriccio Lobster Fra Diavolo Rigatoni Bolognese Eggplant Sorrentina DESSERTS Chocolate Mousse Tiramisu Vanilla Panna Cotta I ordered the seafood cake as an appetizer, a 1.25 lb lobster with linguini and the tiramisu. Everything was very good. The linguini was a bit overcooked, but overall, the meal was very good. My BF got the veal parmigiana and it was one of the best I have had in a long while. The breading was made with good quality bread crumbs, cheese, spices and other complex flavors that made every crispy bite, just delicious. The gnocchi that came with the veal was delightful. A nice dining experience.

Capriccio is hailed as one of the best restaurants in Providence, and it certainly looks the part. The dining room is beautifully decorated, all the servers are in tuxedos, and the dishes (served on white linen-ed, candle-lit tables) cost a pretty penny. Sadly, for all its elegance and charm, the food simply does not go the distance. My party of 9 came for my brother's graduation meal on a bustling Saturday night. We were well-taken care of throughout, despite the server's nonchalance. Traditional Italian restaurants are not always known for their friendly servers, so that was no surprise. We ended up waiting awhile between courses, but that was to be expected as well (given that every out-of-town family in Providence was celebrating at the restaurant that night). My main disappointment was the food. I ordered the Beef Carpaccio and Oysters to start. The carpaccio was actually excellent, probably the best dish I tasted that night. The oysters were fine as well, and well-prepared, but nothing special. For my main course I ordered the Pappardelle with Duck Ragu and Pistachios (because how amazing does THAT sound???). Duck ragu should be rich and flavorful, but the meat was dry and sadly, flavor-less. The pistachios added a nice crunch, but with the addition of burst tomatoes (which got soggy under the pasta) it turned what should have been an incredible dish into one that was profoundly mediocre. Everyone else seemed to have a similar experience: the fish dishes ordered were over-fried (killing the flavor), vegetables soggy, pasta overdressed. It could have been an off night for Capriccio, but reading some of the other reviews it seems my experience wasn't too far off the mark of the average meal. It's a beautiful restaurant and certainly an elegant ambiance for a special occasion, but I won't be rushing back.

Average.... start right from the beginning. dress code is business casual and there were people with jeans. ok. PRO's 1. valet parking is awesome, especially in Providence. 2.coat check is a plus 3.beautiful ambiance. 4.service was impeccable. 5.nice beer and wine selection. CON's 1. waited 50 minutes for my meal. (I almost walked out)(I witnessed a couple order, eat, and leave then another couple sat down and ordered , and then we were served) 2.finally served a cold, overcooked steak. 3.my girl ordered the risotto, it was awesome, nice chunks of steak, cheesy rice... $170 meal, tip, valet, coat check... save this place for special occasions.

Nice place. Quick valet service, didn't have to wait for a table at 8pm. I ordered the Veal Parm. Very good, pounded thin. Also ordered the bolognese. Again, very good. Service was solid. Waiter was a bit arrogant, and didn't pay as much attention to the table as he should, but in his defense he had a couple very large groups. I didn't think it was that expensive. They also had very comfortable chairs, make you feel like a king. Dinner for 2 with no booze was $79.

Top of the line all the way!!! Service, food, and atmosphere are impeccable! This is our special spot where me and my boyfriend go for special occasions. I came to Capriccio twice and both times I walked away so full (and satisfied) I could barely move. Luckily I didn't have far to go because of their complimentary valet service. My meal during restaurant week was especially enjoyable. I chose the carpaccio for an appetizer and was blown away - it was covered in truffle oil!! Seriously, can it get any better? Not really, but the entree came close. I got the Pacific Sea Bass, which is one of the best fish entrees I've had to date. The previous time I came I got the Pork Loin Valdostana - also an incredible dish but very heavy. Be prepared to do nothing for the rest of the day if you get that dish. Dessert is decent but pretty run of the mill - the panna cotta and chocolate mousse are both tasty but don't really stand out like the rest of the meal. Won't stop me from getting dessert when I come back, though!

At one time, Capriccio's may have been the best restaurant in Rhode Island -- and one of the best in New England. And though it has fallen down the list a bit -- a result of many high-quality, upscale restaurants that have opened through the years as part of the city's renaissance -- Capriccio's hasn't missed a beat. We began our dining experience with an assortment of appetizers that included a rich and generous lobster bisque, gently cooked calamari, and a grilled mozzarella caprese rich with the flavor of fresh herbs and prosciutto -- all fabulous. For my entree, I wisely selected the Veal Oscar which was smothered in a rich Hollandaise sauce and littered with tasty lobster chunks. Exceptional. And my wife raved about the Beef Bourguignonne Risotto, a personal favorite, not often seen on local menus. But before you pack the younglings in the mini van, two bits of advice. First, the restaurant prides itself on fine leisurely dining -- don't be in a hurry or have other plans. And second, don't forget your credit card -- Capriccio's can be expensive. So if you can afford my advice, enjoy Capriccio's at its own pace, soak in the old-world ambiance, and enjoy the attentive table side service whenever you can. It is a uniquely Providence experience.

The atmosphere was cool, brick basement with old world charm. We were surprised to see the prefix menu as restaurant week was over. It looked good and had the apps we were going to order before we saw it so we ordered from it. Even though we added extra apps and bought wine, I knew we were sunk by the waiters expression. My scallops were good, but the chicken dish my wife had was pretty terrible. If nobody wants to cook or serve the prefix menu, take it down. Our bill was still around $200, probably what we would have spent otherwise as we wouldn't have added apps and not ordered dessert in the same place we dine. With so many great places to eat in providence I would encourage the wait staff to be respectful of where people choose to offer their palate and worry less about an extra $5.00 tip from a more expensive entrée.

I really love the fact that a restaurant maintains the elegant aspect of table side service... a true white tablecloth restaurant. The famed Sole imported from Holland did not disappoint, the meunière sauce was rich... the fish tender (could have been served warmer however). I was a bit disappointed by the side dish offerings, as well as my friends meal (lobster in vodka sauce over cappellini which was all overcooked, lobster tough... again food not warm). I must give props to the service aspect though, even if the server lacked knowledge of the wine list.

Came here last month for my birthday with another couple. Hadn't been in years...my first choice was Café Nuovo which is their sister restaurant and my favorite but they were closed (!?) on the Saturday night I wanted to go(it was also my husband's bday we were celebrating). We hadn't been in a few years because the last few times it had been a so-so experience but this night made up for it for sure and we will be back. We started with some drinks at the bar. They have a really nice bar - just wish it were larger and they used to have entertainment but I don't think they do that any more. We were sat on time for our reservation. Service was very good. Food was good although they seemed to have switched the temps of my husbands and my meat where he got veal medium rare and I got steak well done. The waiter was quick to remedy the situation. And brought out all new sides as well. It was worth the wait. In addition we must have mentioned it was our bday and he brought out a small cake for the table and bought us a round of drinks for the inconvenience. Very classy Capriccios, thanks for the memories and we will surely be back.

Went for an anniversary dinner with my boyfriend. I rate 5 stars for the food, but the service was another story. I felt as though our waitress was very stern, and serious with us. She was not very friendly or sociable at all. I feel this is because of our age, as we are fairly young but not teenagers. Best veal parm I have ever had though. Love the fact that this place is actually downstairs below street level, it makes it unique. Great food!

Went last night for dinner. Service was very slow. Food was just ok, nothing great. I got the sea bass and my husband got the fettucine which was prepared table side (but actually behind our table against a wall so we couldn't see what he was doing :(. Since we had to wait a long time for the server to prepare the fettucini, my dinner wasn't hot any more when they presented it. Tables too close together for cooking dishes table side... A chef was cooking over flames right next to me for another table, so we could see what he was doing for them! Won't go back, wouldn't recommend it.

If I was looking to whack someone or more likely have the GREATEST BEEF WELLINGTON I have ever had this is where I go. It has old school charm, a superb wait staff and the food is to die for. Its something right out of the Godfather and a must go. Clams casino also deserve a mention. Sit back and let the evening wash over you here you will not be disappointed. If you have ever set foot in the Olive Garden, you cant come here you have no taste.

I have driven past this restaurant many times but due to its prices had never stopped by. During restaurant week, I came here for lunch. The maitre D was a slightly rude to me and my party, perhaps because we were in our 20's, which irked me a little. He even came to pour us water later on when we were eating, but reached right in front of the plate while I was eating without excusing himself and poured - he also never resopnded every time we said "thank you". Our server, however, was very friendly and knew exactly what he was doing. He was respectful and made up for the service problems. The food came in good time, and it was amazing. I had the mussels with white sauce (very fresh) - a little too much butter, but I'm not complaining about that. For my entree, I had the pork loin stuffed with cranberries and spinach and it was much better than I expected. The pork was perfectly cooked, juicy, and the fat-lean content was just right. The potatoes were roasted slow and were seasoned very well. For dessert, I had the panna cotta - smooth, clean, and perfect after a large and satisfying meal. The berries that came with the panna cotta were lack-luster, but did help to cut into the sweetness.

I love the old school feel of Capriccio with the formal wait staff and cozy feel sitting downstairs. We were lucky enough to have the restaurant week menu that they carried over for the summer. The arancini was phenomenal. I would go back just for that! The chicken parm was delicious too. I definitely got my money's worth as the portions were huge. I would recommend this for the experience and the great food!

WOW!!! This place is crazzzy!! Went here for lunch and it was so awesome. Firstly the decor is beautiful, I went to the ladies room and the stall was like a fancy bat cave, no lie! The walls are like a cave. The waiter was so authentically Italian, he was super nice what a gentleman. The lunch was a pre-fix for like 16 bucks. I had a bowl ( a bowl!) of potato squash soup. My friends entree was the veal parm, I had the crispy eggplant lasagna, I took photos check out the portions!! For dessert I had the tiramisu , to die for! I had a Cosmo, my pal had a margarita, we finished dessert with expresso and coffee, this crazy spectacular lunch cost us less than 65 bucks. The waiter followed us to the car with our humongous left overs. Hands down the best lunch I've had like ever. This sh@t is like 4 realz!

Where else can you find flambé, steak Diane, or Dover sole served table side with exceptional service? The prices are perfectly in line for the quality of food, portions (not many restaurants believe in giving you a salad and side of pasta anymore) and attention to detail. We dined as a party of 9. The waiter was nice enough to visit all sides of the table to list specials and answer questions without yelling and disturbing other guests. Every course came out at once, even the table side options were timed perfectly. My only complaint was that one guest and I ordered the beef Wellington med/rare and it came out well done for both of our servings. If you like rare stick with the Diane. This restaurant really is a gem in prov.

My boyfriend and I had a great experience last night going out for my birthday. Everything was great from the dimmed lighting and look of the restaurant to the food and service we received. Initially we were going to just order off of the restaurant week pre fixe menu but after hearing the specials we thought otherwise. I had a blackened squid ink pasta with an tomato arabiata sauce with clams, mussels, bay scallops and squid. It was amazing the sauce wasn't as spicy as expected but all the flavors we're excellent. Although I think I may have liked my boyfriend's dish better which was lamb sliced into 3 tender pieces in a blueberry port wine sauce and mashed potatoes. Phenomenal. I definitely enjoyed the large variety of wine available to us as well. All the servers we're very pleasant and attentive to us, a very professional look to the service. To top of the night we both had martinis the Chocolate Cupcake and the White Chocolatini. So sweet and very well made. We had these alongside our desert which was crepes made tableside and flambe'd, it's a nice touch that you don't see at many restaurants. It is a pricey restaurant but everything is worth it, if you are going to go out somewhere special Cappriccios is a great choice.

This is our 2nd time going here and will certainly not be our last. They offer free valet parking which makes it very easy and we love not having to worry about where we will park. You have to walk down stairs into the restaurant. The service is impeccable. Men wear tuxedos and really know there stuff. We sat not far from a fireplace which was nice. The atmosphere is very nice. We loved the food....our friend got the shrimp Flambe which they make by your table and that was impressive. The gnochi is the best I've ever had and the sauce is by far the best I've tasted. My husband got surf and turf and loved it and other friend got steak of some sort which he enjoyed. A nice night out!

If you like being harassed by wait staff this is the place for you. took my gf here after work both in suits, and was told by the wait staff to remove my beanie I was wearing since it is winter and all. The place was empty and this completely ruined my dinner. I asked for the check immediately and I will never be returning. I will make sure this place is not an option for our clients and future business gatherings after this experience.

Beef Wellington, if you are going too order only one thing this is it, and you had better only order one thing because it was big enough for 2! This place is great, perfectly cooked meats and veggies not too soft not too hard, Goldielocks would approve! Seafood was very fresh but slightly overcooked though it was stuffed striped bass, cook the fish right and the stuffing would have been under done a bit. Overall my only critique is the unecessarily over ambitious menu and specials list must be a bear to manage without waste, but I do no work there so I thorougherly enjoyed the quality and the dining room is Beautiful.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
