Dropped by to pick up a bakers dozen of assorted bagels, cream cheese, & lox. Nothing much notable about the small bagel joint itself. The price was reasonable and home I went with my purchases. My first choice once home was the wheat everything bagel with cream cheese, spinach (I added the spinach from home) and lox. I toasted the bagel lightly but really didn't need too. Some chewiness and a mouthful of taste, yum! Afterwards I regretted only getting two wheat everything bagels! My daughter had the garlic bagel with veggie cream cheese and loved it! My hubby devoured the pumpernickel with plain cream cheese! I don't care for bagels that are too bread like and these were not! Great find for a local bagel place with no frills but great tasting bagels!

Excellent for what it's made for!!! Exceptionally large variety of bagels, always fresh, always delicious, with a lot of combinations available to you! I suggest take out, walking to a nice spot on campus and eating :)

I lived around the corner from Bagel Gourmet one semester, and my idea of a quick, filling breakfast was changed forever over those few months. Egg and cheese on their pumpernickel bagel? Oh god, yes. It's so good that every time I went around later than usual, they would always be out of pumpernickel. I'd have to "settle" for their everything bagel or onion bagel. But really, both those are awesome as well. Sometimes, I'd pick up a bagel and some cream cheese in a hurry to munch on during class. These bagels taste fantastic even when they're not toasted! In fact, I began to request that they not toast my bagel if all I wanted with it was cream cheese (definitely get it toasted if you want egg and cheese or sausage instead). This place is an institution. It's cheap and the bagels are authentically New York and out of this world. During commencement weekend at Brown, the breakfast line was out the door, across the parking lot, and on the street. Oh yeah.

This is how you run a local business! Bagel Gourmet's food speaks for itself, but the staff are always so friendly and helpful. This place will be around for a LONG time! Best bagels north of NYC.

I'm always on the look-out for a decent bagel shop that sells an everything bagel that really can be classified as "everything"... bonus points for having a lot of that "everything" stuck to the bagel. I also love places that will cream cheese my bagel for me. Bagel Gourmet filled both my prerequisites this morning, as I stopped and gave it a shot for the first time. Looking at the menu board as I waited for my bagel to toast, I realized that they sell much more than just bagels; next time I'll be trying something different!

Best bagels in Rhode Island. If there is an arrogant New Yorker in your life who sneeringly says things like "You can't get a decent bagel outside 'The City'" take him here to shut him up forever. Bagels, excellent. Cream cheeses, excellent (I recommend the Lox spread, in particular). Breakfast burritos and egg sandwiches, also fantastic. Only downside is that the inside is a bit small and ordering can be a little tricky during breakfast rush times, but that's not their fault, and the service is friendly and fast. I've gone their for years and never had a bad meal!

Probably the best $5 anyone can spend on food for the day. Best Bagels in the city I would argue. Few notes that prevented me from giving this a 5 1. The service here is very inconsistent. No one here really speaks English to well, so they will often forget what you order if you get a lot of items on one Bagel. I've gotten into the habit now of writing it down for them so they get it all right. As well, some workers spend more time talking when it's busy than working, which holds up the flow. 2. The more items you get (and especially if the items are hot, like chicken), you get a lot less for more. Keep it to about 3-4 items per Bagel. 3. Their grilled chicken cost less than buying a seltzer water. Drinks are around a 150-200% markup most of the time. Way overpriced. Don't buy them. Love this place other than that.

I just ate here and had an Onion bagel with Cream cheese, capers, and Lox. I was pleasantly surprised. Is it a New York bagel ? No. Is it still good? Yes! The bagels are a bit small but they had a good bit of chew to them! The staff here was super friendly and despite other ignorant reviews about their ability to speak English, their English was perfect. They were warm and inviting and fast. The line moved very quickly. I will definitely come back here. I may try a breakfast sandwich next ! EDIT: came back and had a breakfast sandwich and was very pleased. Overall still a quickly moving line and good service and good food.

I honestly really enjoy the bagels from here. They are a little on the small side but you can tell that they're fresh. They have a huge selection of cream cheeses and other toppings. The lox spread is my favorite! It's really mixed in and the cream cheese becomes pink too! You can also get breakfast sandwiches and burritos. They have 4 different fridges of bottled drinks as well as coffee behind the counter. The prices are pretty decent. The staff is really nice and they make your food really quickly. The only downfall is the seating dilemma. There's a table with four chairs and then a counter with five or six stools. The counter and table are always covered with seeds from the bagels and are dirty.

  • Kyle S.

Bagel Gourmet, you are A-OK in my book. I'll admit, the bagels here are good but in my opinion, not as mind blowing as some other reviews have stated. It was nice to see that they offer a good variety of freshly made bagels. It was tough though to figure out which ones were which in the case since none of them were labeled. The bagels themselves were a little bit smaller than I hoped for, but at the same time it was still delicious and hit the spot. I also enjoyed the extensive variety of cream cheese flavors they offered to compliment them. If I'm in the area and looking for a quick breakfast bite, I would come back again. The service was prompt & friendly and a nice variety of fresh bagels to choose from at very reasonable prices.

Dirty, unpleasant staff. The bagels were okay nothing to write home about, just a low review.

Best bagel in providence. I grew up with New York bagels and these are up to par. Just take my word for it, folks. This is the place to go. Good coffee. Fast and inexpensive. I hope this place will stay forever. It's my favorite bagel shop in Rhode Island.

  • Paige S.

Delicious bagels - you have to try the whole wheat bagel with chive cream cheese, it's a winner. The staff is a little quiet, but hey they make a damn good bagel and they're not too slow. All locations are great, I prefer the downtown spot just because of its size.

I have literally been to Bagel Gourmet several hundred times over the past four years and not without reason. It's a great spot to grab a quick breakfast before class for under $5 (toasted bagel with cream cheese and an iced coffee). I love their breakfast burritos, which are loaded with egg, peppers, onions, salsa, beans, cheese, and bacon or ham. My favorite order, however, is a bacon egg and cheese with avocado on a toasted bagel. The Best. The bagels are decent though I've definitely had better, but their homemade flavored cream cheeses close the deal for me. They have all sorts of flavors including olive, garlic, sun-dried tomato, chipotle, vegetable, strawberry, cinnamon walnut, chive, and my personal favorite: jalapeño. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, they make decent burritos and quesadillas, too. The place is usually pretty uncrowded except for Saturday and Sunday mornings, where you'll have to wait for up to 20 minutes in a crowded room. Their peak hours are usually around 10-11am on weekdays. I'm gonna miss this place when I graduate.

I come from a family of bagel eaters. In fact for those old enough to remember my father used to bring us to the place that made "real" bagels on North Main Street (Constitution Hill) in the 1950's! Now years later when I come to visit my mom, her favorite bags are from Bagel Gourmet. And from my pre-low carb days, I must agree they are the real thing: flavorful, big and NOT full of air...bagels made the way bagels should be made - soft and chewy inside of a crispy outside!

  • Nicola R.

Best place to get breakfast sandwiches in rhode island hands down but the bagels do not compare to New Yorks, They tried to but didn't make. Im from New York for school and these are the best bagels I have found here. I dont agree with the comment saying it will shut a new yorker up ! I would most definitely go back.

  • Jean F.

Bagel? Mexican? What am I in the mood For?!? Enjoy both at the bagel gourmet! The food is good, quick, cheap and there are plenty of options on the menu including lots of vegetarian options. Unfortunately the ordering /pausing process is less than efficient and pleasant but if you can get past thr you're in store for some good fresh foooood!

  • Joseph P.

Probably the best bagel I've had in Rhode Island...but it's true, it's nothing compared to NY. That being said, they are usually quick with their service, and their breakfast sandwiches are pretty good as well. Be careful because sometimes there is a line to the door, and you need to bring cash with you. I can't speak for the Mexican food since I've yet to try it.

    (3)
  • Molly O.

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM!!!! They have SO many cream cheese options and lots of different bagel choices. I love the caper cream cheese. They make sandwiches too. Its a local favorite so expect it to be busy. Its small so you have to stand awkwardly next to strangers and there is often a long line but it moves quickly. Not much seating so its better to grab and go. Enjoy!

    (5)
  • Tara L.

I've had really excellent bagels outside of NYC but this was not the place. The pumpernickel just tasted like a plain bagel and there was hardly any lox in the cream cheese. Eric's everything bagel with veggie cream cheese was only slightly better.

    (2)
  • Rachel D.

The best bagels ever!! So delicious and fresh. They always fresh and hot! They have a crispy outside with a warm soft inside. I always get the dozen for every holiday. Get there early, and sometimes there's a line of mostly eAstsiders and college kids. It can be annoying :/. However for me it's worth the trip. Yummm !!!

    (5)
  • David C.

Nothing wrong with the product (granted, I'm not a stickler when it come to bagels, there's not much difference to me between a famous New York deli bagel and one you might find at Dunkies), but the ordering system is chaotic and confusing, especially on a busy weekend morning. The guys behind the counter are obviously annoyed with the confusion as well, and as such are not very friendly. Not sure if it's worth the hassle to come here.

The first time I went to Bagel Gourmet in 2012 was good. My latest visit was not. My bagel with cream cheese took twice as long to prepare as it would have at Bagel Gourmet Ole. As I was leaving, I noticed that there were fruit flies swarming inside the bagel display. Go to Bagel Gourmet Ole on Thayer Street instead. You'll get the same bagels, but more quickly and in a more sanitary environment. EDIT: Bagel Gourmet Ole on Thayer St has the same problem: fruit flies where they keep their bagels. Nothing kills the appetite faster than seeing flies crawling all over the spinach bagels you were going to order.

I've always expected some legwork when it comes to finding the best bagels after moving to a new town. I didn't expect to have so much trouble finding a decent bagel in this city. I got spoiled when we lived on MDI and I found a one-woman bagel shop (people reportedly traveled from NYC and took her bagels back home with them in bulk). Gosh, does Bagel Gourmet fill that void! Bagel Gourmet is as close as I've found to my perfect bagel since I left Maine 5 years ago (pretty sad if you think about it too hard). Soft on the inside, crisp on the outside, a little bigger than I like, but yummy -- so yummy -- just the same. I've been told that the family running it now took over for a family who owned and operated the shop for years and uses their passed-down recipe. The folks behind the counter here are always nice and helpful, and I love that I can get a baker's dozen with a surprising amount of variety. Only real downside is that you have to pay with cash or check, but that doesn't really bother me. If you're trying to find a delicious bagel (or a bagel, period) in this town, you'll find it at Bagel Gourmet.

  • Shawn B.

And then? And then? And still the best bagel I've ever had. It is always done right. Once you get passed the fact that the slab of cream cheese on your bagel is bigger than the bagel itself, you'll be fine. The staff works quickly to get everyone their orders cause the lines do get long. It's a good idea to know what you want and ready to order as soon as you get to the counter. It keeps the line moving and the servers and staff ready to prepare whatever you'll like. Still going strong . . . without changing a thing . . .5 stars!

Excellent whole wheat bagel with egg bacon cheddar. Could clean up sit down area but that's my only negative.

  • Steve H.

Daughter recommended this shop so I stopped before heading back home. Ordered a breakfast bagel and a bagel with Roast Beef for a lunch meal on the road. Both met the mark. Bagels were as good as they come, right size, taste, and sandwiches were filling. Staff was efficient, friendly and fast. Will make this stop a regular when I return too Providence. The roast beef bagel was delicious even 4 hours later, I was so happy.

  • Meghan R.

The bagel was great, chewy and toasty. The guacamole was equal parts onion and avocado... not excellent. Nice big selection of bagels and cream cheeses ... that's exciting! The guy at the counter wasn't the friendliest, but he wasn't rude either. Great and cheap for lunch!

When you are in the mood for a breakfast sandwich, think first of Bagel Gourmet! I have visited this small bagel shop on several occasions now and have been delighted each time with the quality of my purchase. Bagel Gourmet's breakfast sandwiches blow their Dunkin Donuts counterpart out of the water. One defining difference. . . made with REAL eggs! The kind you crack open on the griddle, not the pre-formed patties that disintegrate in your mouth. Lots of gooey cheese, meats cooked to perfection. Served on a bagel of your choice and wrapped in wax paper and aluminum foil to maximize warmth for transport time. Breakfast sandwiches are not the only thing you can partake in. There are an infinite amount of bagel and cream cheese combinations, breakfast burritos, and a variety of Mexican dishes served after 10 am. Reasonable prices! Sausage, Egg, and Cheese on an Everything bagel costs approximately $4. From what I recall: Types of Bagels: Plain, Everything, Sesame, Cinnamon Raisin, Poppy, Sunflower, Cinnamon Sugar, Blueberry, Onion, and more! Types of Cream Cheese: Chive, Vegetable, Strawberry, Olive, Jalapeno, Sundried Tomato, Cinnamon Walnut Raisin, and Garlic & Herb. Four refrigerated cases of drinks to choose from including milk, juices, energy drinks, sports drinks, etc. Can get very crowded in here on a busy morning. I do not recommend sitting to eat unless you enjoy having breakfast in a crowded subway car setting. Keep in mind, they do not accept credit cards. ATM nearby! Completely worth the wait, quality meals!

I am a huge bagel fan, and boy, was I happy to find a bagel joint in Providence! The gourmet cream cheeses and bagels taste very fresh, and the bagel sandwiches are always hot and cooked to order. The location is great for East-Sider's, especially on the Wickenden end, but a little inconvenient for other Providence residents. I wish Bagel Gourmet opened another store on the West Side by Broadway. This place gets busy and is teeming with college students.

  • Radd M.

Best bagel I've ever had. Three bucks and change for an onion bagel with caper cream cheese, so it's a bit pricey but you taste where your dollars are going - don't worry about that. Caper cream cheese, #1. I'm totally going to start making that. Also, I'm pretty sure I spotted Mexican colas inside (the ones with real sugar).

    (5)
  • Karen L.

Not perfect. Not bad. Authentic Jewish bagels? I think not. Good attempt. Lots of cream cheese options. No nonsense but satisfying when you have the bagel urge. It's no H&H, but for Providence, I guess it's all right.

    (3)
  • Hilary H.

How do you know when a bagel is perfect? When toasting it would ruin it. Yup, that's what I said. If you can slice it, schmear it and eat it with no further ado, it's perfection. Bagel Gourmet creates such bagels. My favorite favorite favorite is the everything bagel - it's so well balanced with salt, poppy seeds, garlic, onions, and sesame seeds that I might not need to add the schmear of garden veggie cream cheese, but why deprive myself of further gluttonous joy? This cream cheese is SO good - and fresh. I can tell because they use red onions, and they still have their color. Seriously kids - these bagels are a no-brainer if you're looking for authentic, tasty, and satisfying NY bagels. Do it!

  • Amanda P.

You may want to check your order twice to be sure they got it right, but once you sink your teeth into one of these bagels, you'll be in bread-and-cream-cheese heaven. I recommend the sunflower bagel with plain cream cheese & lox, add capers. Heavenly!

    dense, chewy, satisfying, inexpensive bagels

    (4)
  • Abhay Kumar A.

Staff is friendly, ambience is good, but food is average. Can't get a decent whole grain bagel. Servings are miniature. Bagels, cheese, eggs etc from any NYC street cart will be better and cheaper! Good for college crowd though.

    (3)
  • Raza H.

Great place for a good bagel and a quick bite, but the line gets long quickly and the place is cash-only. They make fresh batches at 6 and 10am!

After living in NYC I have become a bit of a bagel snob. I for the life of me cannot find a single one that I like in Maine. So I was a bit skeptical when I was told this place was almost as good as NYC. First off- bring CASH or CHECK. no CC taken here folks. Second- be prepared to wait. It seems there is always a line. Third- it is best to take it to go. not much seating and people are bumping into you and you just feel in the way. Go home and sit on your couch and enjoy it. Ok now the food. Caper cream cheese is sooo good. I had it on the sunflower seed bagel with lox. yum. To be honest this is all I have had here every time I have come (all of two times haha). But it is so worth it. My only complaint is the price. Holy cannoli almost 9$ for that bagel. Lox or not that is expensive. My fav place in NYC does it for 7$. Even the drinks range in price from 2$ or more here. I like it. You should try it.

  • K S.

I'm no bagel connoisseur, but I love Bagel Gourmet. I only find myself in the mood for a bagel a few times a year, but when I do, I know where to go! As noted, this lovely place is cash only, so if you are like me and never carry cash, come prepared! It can be packed, especially on weekend mornings, but the line moves fast. The bagel sandwiches are yummy, and their selection of bagels and cream cheeses is awesome. I love the blueberry bagel with plain cream cheese, but if I am in the mood for something more savory, the onion bagel with chive cream cheese is out of this world.

    (4)
  • Jody S.

YUM! Get the pumpernickel bagel with olive cream cheese!

    (5)
  • Ashley A.

Everything bagel toasted with creamy chive cream cheese- sounds amazing right? This place is so great. I love their wide selection of cream cheese spreads and their selection of fresh bagels, despite if I always stick with the everything bagel. Recently, I was informed that they also make most of their bagels in wheat as well, so there is the alternative if you prefer wheat. Don't be fooled by the name, they also have a selection of breakfast sandwiches, fresh potatoes and macaroni salads, even burritos! There is also a location down city located in the Brown University Medical Center. It's almost a hidden gem, because it's not as busy as the other location.

Coffee tastes like feet. Full of obnoxious brown students and pretentious east siders. Saw a mouse.

    (1)
  • Kel S.

Decent bagels, got them mid-afternoon on a rainy Sunday, and the guy suggested getting them toasted as he alluded to the fact that they may not be the freshest. Well, the jalepeno cream cheese and chive cream cheese made up for the mediocre bagels. The cream cheeses were unbelievable. The place was crowded even at an off hour in bad weather. I'll go back early morning next time to get the "proper" experience.

  • Meghan A.

I know, I know, I know. Four stars. You would think someone who goes there at least once every weekend (at least) would give it five stars, but I can explain. The first time I went to Bagel Gourmet was when my brother was going to Brown undergrad. After a long (and very fun) night, sometimes the only thing to bring you back to life is a bacon, egg and cheese with some hot sauce. Now that I live in Providence, it's becoming a weekend ritual to go there at least once. My favorite items juggle between an onion bagel toasted with cream cheese, a bacon, egg and cheese or a simple egg and cheese. I give major props to Bagel Gourmet for using real eggs. No real eggs? No business from this gal. I have never felt that my order wasn't cooked well, and I haven't had to worry that I'll get the wrong order. Somehow despite all the activity that is constantly flowing through the establishment, they are able to keep track of who ordered what, how they wanted it, and whether or not they need some hot sauce. Like everyone else has said, there is no avoiding one thing: the line. Sometimes it's small and you get in just in time before the crowd magically appears, sometimes you're stuck at the end. The crew tries to move the line as quickly and efficiently as they can. I would say the only issue is that some people hover around the counter while they wait for their food, and that causes the massive pile up. Stupidity and impatience is a learned trait. Why four stars? I don't think it's the cleanest place in all of Providence. That could have to do with all the people coming in and leaving their trash on the tables instead of throwing them away in the conveniently located trash cans, or it could just appear to be less than sparkling because the building itself isn't in the best shape. But to date I have never seen a rodent that doesn't belong and I have never had anything, but an awesome breakfast from Bagel Gourmet. Pick up your trash, damnit!

  • Jalal O.

I got the whole-wheat everything bagel with the lox spread. The bagel was great, although the garlic bits on the outside got a bit overtoasted and ashy. The spread could use more lox-taste.

  • Anya R.

I don't think there's anyone who went/goes to Brown who hasn't been here and loved it! The cream cheese selection is INCREDIBLE. I just wish they had tofu cream cheese! But it was worth the tummy ache for this lactose intolerant girl to eat a bagel with half sundried tomato and half cinnamon raisin walnut cream cheese (my two favorites! I love that I don't have to choose). They also have delicious breakfast burritos and sandwiches. It would be great if they took credit cards though. Luckily, there's an ATM next door which they always remind you of.

Yesterday I was at MGM at Foxwoods and had a Bagel with Smoked Salmon at Einstein's. My everything bagel had all the basics plus some. Cream cheese, tomato, onion, sliced tomato, cucumber, smoked salmon and some capers. Packed nicely in a rectangular box, open faced. Nice balance, good flavor nice presentation. This morning, being on Providence East Side, I figured I would stay on the hunt for a Smoked Salmon Bagel. At Bagel Gourmet I always wondered what was missing about the bagels. Today I ordered an everything bagel with Smoked Salmon with the works, there is something lackluster about the bagel (not chewy, puffy or soft about it) the salmon was ok with tomato and onion, but I had to open the paper wrapped sliced bagel to remove the lettuce. Lettuce? I always find it amazing when the people that serve food sometimes do not know how the food they are serving is supposed to be served. Anyway, this does not satisfy the bagel & lox craving. Might be good ok for egg and cheese, but not bagel & lox.

the guy behind the counter complimented my nail polish, so this place automatically gets 5 stars. just kidding. but my point is that the employees here are friendly, always up for conversation, and attentive. ive never been ignored or overlooked and, like it is with bagel gourmet ole on thayer st, im always happy to see the same faces when i walk in. i go to the thayer street location much more often based on the convenience of the location, but if you are a brown university student and live in new dorm or grad center, you might as well come by here to avoid big lines or a trek up thayer. the bagels are fresh and come in a huge variety, the coffee is always piping hot and flavorful, and the prices are pretty cheap and reasonable. bagel gourmet is definitely something im going to miss about providence/brown.

    (5)
  • Andrew T.

Regardless of the name, bagel gourmet has some of the best burritos in Providence. I find myself eating their chicken burritos way more than I should, and I am never disappointed.

  • Uncle K.

Love this place and go out of my way to get there several times on every trip. Star deducted for lack of variety. Bagel Shack in San Clemente and Absolute Bagels in Harlem still have them beat. You won't be disappointed here unless you are looking for that perfect cheddar jalapeno bagel...you need to go cross country for that.

Bagel gourmet is the only place where I've had the egg on my breakfast sandwich cooked right before my eyes. No more of that stupid egg patty which has been frozen for god knows how long from Dunkies and au bon pan and whatever else. MAKE SURE TO BRING CASH, NO CREDIT CARDS

whenever i found myself visiting brown university, i grew to crave bagel gourmet they do a great egg n cheese bagel sandwich and surprisingly some of the simplest, most authentic mexican food on the east coast (burritos, breakfast burritos) yes, sometimes -- especially the times youre starving -- the line is out the door, but it's worth it and they have a great drink selection (apparently, for me, this means...arizona iced tea)

Delicious bagels! There's lots of variety, but I'm usually just looking for a tasty onion bagel with cream cheese.

  • brian l.

best bagels in providence, in my opinion small, i agree with take it to go and bring cash and, well, there may be a line...

    (5)
  • Chris K.

Great little bagel shop, sometimes can get a little crowded and has a very disorganized ordering system( a lot of confusion as to who has ordered and who has paid and who is waiting and who is just looking at the drinks-- its madness). Nonetheless the bagels are chewy on the outside and soft on inside. Bagel with lox is the real winner.- This bad boy costs like 8 bucks but comes with a ton of lox rather than the infamous "lox cream cheese" which contains only small traces of salmon goodness. Prices are fairly cheap- I hear the mexican food is decent but have yet to muster the energy to make my way over in the afternoon.

  • Art V. B.

I'm not surprised this place had the longest line for breakfast in the latest Brown alumni reunion. Nowhere else in the world you'll have such an amazing egg and cheese bagel. I know, it is probably one the most unhealthy breakfasts you may have, but once a year it is worth the treat.

    (5)
  • Giuliano P.

Every time I visit Providence, this place provides consistently good bagels, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, and surprisingly authentic mexican food at very reasonable prices. To boot, they have a very extensive selection of beverages. Sometimes the line can be out the door, and the place can get crowded, but overall, this place is pretty quality.
