Ordered the Manley, which is their "Famous Portuguese Fish Chowder" with a piece of fried cod in the middle of it. The service was slow, which wasn't a big deal because we were just relaxing with some friends. We order Calamari which was pretty good, seemed to be more batter than shrimp. My meal was decent, very filling, would probably of have skipped the app if I knew how heavy the meal was going to be. The nicest part was the location. It looks over a marina with a nice serene view and outdoor seating. Be aware that there isn't very much parking right next to the restaurant.

I've never actually been to the physical restaurant, but the Melville Grill has a booth at the Pawtucket Winter Farmers Market. They sell a number of items there, including their award-winning Portuguese Fish Chowder. Ok, so you know how a lot of places call their food "award-winning" and it's kind of a sham? Well, this is the real deal. Their chowder took second place at the Newport Chowder Cook-Off this past summer. And you know what? I totally understand why. It's really really good. Melville's chowder is chock full of scallops, shrimp, cod, potatoes, and chorizo in a deliciously creamy broth. It's the kind of soup you crave on a cold winter afternoon. And because they're at the Farmers Market, us Providence folks don't have to drive all the way to Portsmouth to get it. Yay!

Kind of sad I discovered this place only a month before moving out of Portsmouth! It's right on the water set against the background of half a gazillion [exaggeration] sailboats. It has outdoor seating, so definitely check it out while the weather is still decent! I got the chicken bomb pizza. They're thin crust and on the small side, but easily shared by two people if you add fries or an appetizer. It has alfredo sauce with caramelized onions and grilled chicken. Oh and mushrooms, but I opted out of those. It was pretty terriffic. Guest got a burger which he seemed to enjoy. The fries were pretty bodacious as well. Almost tasted like they were fried in the same oil as a batch of fried clams, but I kind of liked it like that. The only thing I didn't like was the coleslaw. It was pretty much the most bland and awful coleslaw I've ever eaten. But I mean, who goes somewhere to eat the side of coleslaw? Other than that, the menu was pretty tempting. There were more than a few things I would like to have ordered, and pricing was decent. Our bill came to $25 with the pizza, burger and two sodas. Overall, I'd definitely come back. It's certainly off the beaten path, but if you've got an iPhone or a GPS you'll find it just fine. There are also signs all the way leading down to it from the main road.

Not good, reviews made me think otherwise but some of the worst food I've had on the Island. Service was great, which is why I'm giving them two stars, but the food was sub par to say the least. The only thing that was decent was the Portuguese Chowder but too salty to enjoy a lot of it. Kung Pao Calamari was so sweet and caked with sauce that it was really not enjoyable, although if they used half or a third the amount of sauce it may have been decent with good fresh calamari (this was chewy and hard at the same time, a sign of old frozen calamari). For entree, I had the baked scrod and the pan had about a 1/2 inch of water on the bottom, signifying deeply frozen fish...this is one of the most seafood rich areas of the world and you're serving me frozen fish? and not properly de-thawed at that?! Had the cheesecake for dessert and it was honestly the worst cheesecake I have ever had, it was months old, no creamy rich-ness, and soggy old strawberries on top. It's too bad because its really tough to get a good meal in Portsmouth and i was really hoping to even moderately enjoy this place, I did not though. I guess we'll keep driving to Newport/Matunick/Jamestown/Bristol and Tiverton for decent meals in the summer....

It's a nice place to take visiting family because it's nautically-themed and located at a marina. Menu was eclectic with lots of choices. Food was tasty too.

I love this spot. An absolutely hidden gem on the island. They have the most amazing Portuguese chowder I've ever had. The wings are amazing and they have the best fish and chips on the island. The staff is always going out of their way to ensure you are comfortable. This is also a great family environment. Never had a bad experience here.

Having grown up in Portsmouth, it boggles me why I haven't been here before now. I mean, I have, like... 12 years ago. But not since I was able to drive! We needed a kid friendly dining option for celebrations, and I also wanted seafood. So Melville Grille filled our desires.. and it even had a great ocean view! The atmosphere is clean, nautical, and it makes you feel that you are in a ship. Which is fitting, because you are in a shipyard. I really enjoyed the decor. They also have a large patio and booths, that overlooks the docked boats and is the perfect place to see the sunset on the harbor. The view is truly spectacular. Gster was confused as we were driving up... it felt like we were in a forbidden warehouse, shipyard... something. It just doesn't feel right until you see the restaurant. We had a party of 6 plus 2 kids, and we were seated right away in a large booth. We ordered both types of Calamari for appetizers, which were crisp, fresh, full of taste, and unique. It was extremely good calamari. For meals, I got the Roast cod, Gster got soup and salad, and I forget what everyone else got. Both Gster and I were not that impressed with my meals. My cod was in a big pool of either grease, butter, water... I am not sure what it was. The cod itself tasted good, but if it was in that much butter it just wasn't appealing, regardless of how well it tasted. The menu does offer a variety of options, so even if you don't like seafood there are possibilities. Regardless of our experience with our food, the bar/drinks/view is worth the pitstop!

Best spot of the moment meal. Had the good tacos and salmon sandwich. Delicious from start to finish. Great fries. Staff very friendly and view of the docks is wonderful. A must try. Make sure check the hours before you go.

This place is great. The food is sooooo good. Get the manley, which is their award winning fish stew with a price of fried cod. Ask for a basket of bread to soak up the good stuff. I also love the caprese grilled cheese. The staff is great, always the best service. I would have given 5 stars but the bar stools are a little uncomfortable. It may be a little out of the way but worth the trip

Service was very good, after that it went downhill, I ordered the KING cut of prime rib rare and I got a 12 OZ slab of cold meat! King Cut for 23$$$ says 1 lb + to me. I sent it back for being cold and it came back with fingerprints in my mashed potatoes! I decided I shouldn't complain anymore cuz who knows what was next!! My wife's pasta was great but I don't think they are used to complaints in the kitchen!

I haven't had anything I didn't like from here. The Portuguese fish chowder is the best chowder I've ever had, hands down. No surprise that they've won various awards. The chicken meatballs are beyond tender and flavorful, with a perfect basil tomato sauce. I don't even like chicken all that much, but oh mama. These two are my favorites, but many more items are just as delicious! The restaurant is right on the water with gorgeous views year-round. If you want to sample some of the food without the trek down to Portsmouth, visit the Pawtucket wintertime farmers market where Scott, the owner, serves up some of his most popular lunch items. Well worth it either way!

I had a wonderful time here. I came with my gf and her friends, who happen to be transwomen. We had an awful experience elsewhere where we had been completely ignored and find this place instead.... And boy we were glad! The food was delicious, drinks were lovely, and our waitress Kathleen was very sweet, attentive, friendly and a great server. Thanks guys, for making us feel welcome and for all the deliciousness and friendliness!

This place has the best fish chowder! I've had Scott's Portuguese fish chowder at the Pawtucket wintertime farmers market. It is absolutely the best and I always get a quart to take home with me. It doesn't last more than a day but I'm ok with having it once a week. His chicken meatballs are to die for. I would have never thought to make chicken meatballs but I purchase a quart of that every week as well. I had his New England clam chowder, hot at the market and it was delicious. He also had pumpkin whoopie pies! Omg! Soo good!! I need to get more before they're out of season! Thanks Scott!

Great food, drinks, service (Yay Cassidy!) and especially location! You may have to drive off the beaten path but you won't be disappointed.

I had been dreaming about their chowder for a year and a half, so when my husband and I came back for a visit last week, I knew that we had to stop in for lunch. I always love their Clam Chowder bread bowl, while my husband is a big fan of the Portuguese Chowder bread bowl. It is a great deal and generous portions. We were lucky to make it in right before noon, as the lunch crowd started to roll in while we ate. An all around good, easy going place, and also an easy place to bring kids.

Went on a barbecue night and got the chicken a salad and two kids meals. Salad was very good. Bbq chicken was ample with decent sides. Service was inconsistent. Seemed like she was torn with other tables. At times server was completely attentive and then we would have to send out a search party. At the end of them meal a ramekin of ranch dressing was dropped on my shorts as she was clearing the table. Complete accident. Server apologized and brought napkins with soda water. I was told to send them the "cleaning bill" more than once. I was wearing shorts. Don't think that was decent response. How bout a free drink or dessert? Anything other than a flippant response would have been better. Food is fine for marina. Service is inconsistent at best.

Melville Grille has been in my Yelp bookmarks for a year now so on a beautiful but chilly day we decided to take a drive there for a late lunch. When the GPS starting to guide us though what appeared to be an industrial area we were wondering if we were lost, but eventually saw signs and found the restaurant, which is right on the water. There is a nice outdoor deck, which we didn't partake in since it was a bit chilly. The inside was much larger and nicer than I expected. We were quickly greeted and seated and told the specials. I have to say, the service was great. When I was ordering a glass of wine and mentioned I had never tried it before, she brought me over a sample before bringing me a full glass. I decided to start with the clam chowder and my husband the Portuguese fish chowder. I had been in Maine recently and every cup of chowder I had up there was a disappointment. I don't order thick, creamy New England chowder often and it is a bit of a treat for me. The chowder here was better than what I had in Maine, It was good, but not great. I tried my husband's fish chowder and that had a nice taste to it. We were being pigs and also ordered the boneless buffalo tenders. These weren't bad either. The portion was generous. For my meal I went with the Baja chicken salad. I know, I know. Why am I ordering that in a seafood restaurant. It just sounded good, and it was. It was a generous size and had a lot of chicken. I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. My husband had the fish tacos and they were more of a "make your own" dish, with the tortillas separate. He had three large pieces of fresh fried fish. He was happy with his choice. I would definitely return. They are seasonal, to a certain extent. I asked the waitress when they would be closing this year and she said they hope to be open until at least Christmas.

We LOVE it here! Delicious food (you have to try their award winning Portuguese Fish Chowder) and great atmosphere. Sit inside or sit out on the patio and enjoy the scenic view of the marina. We come at least once a week...amazing!!! Must try!
(5)Allison C.
Love this place! The employees are cheerful and so nice and the food is incredible! The boarders are so good and they have such a large variety of food! Plus the sunset there is gorgeous.
(5)Dawn E.
Awesome Portuguese chowder & killer General Tsao calamari! Would definitely do this again!!! Great setting too!
(5)Peter D.
We keep our boat at NEB and would say we are regulars at the Melville Grill. Scott does a nice job and makes his clients feel welcome. Fish chowder, clam chowder and General Tso calamari are a must have. Some of the mains can get expensive, but portions are large.
(4)Beth J.
Great food and service! Perfect for kids too. We will be back when we can sit outside because it's on a nice spot by the water.
(4)Jill D.
It was a beautiful day out and we wanted to sit outside and not deal with Newport traffic. Gps got us there. Waitress friendly and food fast. I had the Reuben which was good. My daughter ordered a patty melt. That was bland. It was ok but nothing special. Overall it was an ok place. Next time I will try the chowder though.

The five stars is first for the great costumer relationships Scott builds. I first started buying the farmers market chili last year at the wintertime market. Before this I had only tried chili once and it was homemade so it was great. After trying this one once I was hooked! I purchased/still purchase it every weekend at the market. Towards the end of the winter market last season Scott told me to come and try a drink and meal on the patio during the summer. Sadly I didn't make it but finally visited the restaurant this past weekend. Was very windy and chilly out but would be a great patio seat during the summer! Staff was very friendly and food was good! We stopped for a light lunch before going to the vineyards. We both got salads and my friend got chowder as well. Food was fresh and portions were plenty. Lots of chicken on the salad. Most impressive part is Scott remembered me this season as the market opened. Remembering I am a teacher he asked about my school year so far and then even remembered my name. I was quite impressed as the winter market ended around April and just opened at the beginning of the month and I had not seen him the whole time.

We keep our boat at New England Boatworks so The Melville Grille is one of our go to places. We've had a number of items on their menu and have never been disappointed. The fish chowder and clam chowder are fabulous, the stuffies are the best I've ever had, the swordfish is great, as are the burgers, grilled cheese, fish and chips, etc. The location might be a bit off the beaten path, but once you're there you'll be happy you made the trip.

A groovy place - situated WAY WAY out of the way, if you're not a local you'd probably never find this place. It's on the quay where there are a million expensive yachts and sailboats, has a fantastic view of the harbor on the east side of the island, and is a fun place to walk around if you are capable of acting like you belong there. ;-) They have lots of unique foods, I had an $8 "very thin crust pizza" with pepperoni, mushroom, and sausage. It was delicious! Friends had a "Melville Melt" and a "Sicilian Sub" both were good but not amazing. Two beers, three lunches = $37, you can hardly go wrong with that. A great lunch stop, or a weekend dinner.

Our meal was surprisingly good tonight. I had a wonderful scallop dish that was loaded with crab meat and topped with ritz crumbs and sherry. My husband had a chicken topped with Brie and pesto. My daughter had a salmon Alfredo pasta. She asked to sub mushrooms for the broccoli and the waitress was happy to oblige. The menu says the all the veggies are local sand it notes both GL gluten free and H healthy choices. Beautiful sunset location.

The wife and I read all the Yelp reviews and decided we needed to check this place out for ourselves. While it was good, we probably wouldn't run back. If others wanted to go, we would join, but it wouldn't be our first choice. While we can say the service was fantastic it was the food that seemed to be lacking. We had to try the "award winning" Portuguese Fish Chowder, it had a nice flavor but it was mostly just potatoes. Next up was the General Tsao's Calamari, this could have been real good, if it was served hot. I think the calamari is cooked first, then the sauce it put on cold, which cools off everything. The calamari seemed real fresh and the sauce had a nice spice, just disappointing it wasn't hot. We ended off with the Chicken Bomb pizza, it had a nice thin crust and plenty of toppings but just too much cheese and grease for us. Maybe we just made the wrong choices, others plates going by us looked pretty good, ours were just so, so. Like I said we would probably go again but wouldn't hurry back.

This place is REALLY good. The people/waitstaff are super friendly and accommodating. It's family oriented, and they are totally fair when something goes wrong they fix it over and beyond. But hardly does anything go wrong here. The chowder, omg, it really is to die for, and I don't even like chourico much (or it doesn't like me much rather), but this chowder I cannot pass up. They have a dinner for 2 deal that's is super and inexpensive items if you just need a quick meal you don't want to pay through the nose for the view for. The general tao's calamari, you HAVE to try it. I submitted it for Best of RI, but those people never get back to you. Seriously good salmon with the same chili sauce that I get frequently here as well. The pizza was good, not to die for good imo, but still pretty darn good. Can't say enough, and now my stomach is rumbling. I think it's time for another visit from me and the hubster!
(4)J R.
The great little spot in a marina is a bit diffcult to find, but well worth the trip. Everything I have had has been great. Bright and clean and a professional wait staff. Go for lunch, you won't be sorry.
(5)Katy W.
I went there specifically for the General Tsao's Calamari and was very glad I did. It was excellent! Large pieces of calamari, cooked perfectly and topped with a very tasty sauce, jalapenos and peanuts. I had the Reuben which was also very good. Good service, great atmosphere.
(4)Lindsay D.
Such a great view and a really nice lunch! They had some great specials going. A little hard to find but totally worth it! The portions were pretty great. I had the pork medallions (a special) and they were stellar. This is a total go-to for anyone in the area.
