Sandwiches are awesome. The bread is particularly delightful. This season they also added a lobster roll, which is really really good. However, as many other reviewers have mentioned, there is absolutely an issue with process and customer service. You can wait 1/2 hour for a sandwich and that is when they aren't that busy. As great as the sandwiches are, they aren't worth missing out on beach time for.

Oh Picnic basket, how Ive missed you. Now, if you could only come open one in Newport. Im finding damn near impossible to get a good sammich over here In Newport, so I make the drive to Gansett for some Boars-Head meat on a crusty yet pillowy baguette. They use all Boar's Head meats, which is just great, and the people that work there are pretty cool. SUCH a great place to get some grub for the beach, or even after the beach. Thank you guys for being so consistent over the years. Love ya!

Awesome sandwiches and perfect for a outside lunch!!

I usually pick up a sandwich once or twice a week here;) Everything that I have tried (and I try to pick something new each time), has been great. My favorite is the Brie melt with added pesto mayo. Tip: Call your order in if you know what you want. It will save you 20 minutes wait time.

Terrible customer service. Completely devoid of any system on my last 2 visits. On both occasions, I phone ordered 3 simple sandwiches, and was quoted 15 minutes. Both times took over an hour. On the most recent trip, they messed up the order by forgetting a sandwich. I wss told that someone on my end had called in to cancel it. That was a lie. On both occasions, the other customers in the restaurant were on the edge of rage with all the problems and delays. Several people walked out with their hands in the air. Will not return.

I love this place! The only complaint is that I can't get there as often as I like! Great sandwiches, pleasant service and amazing selection of snacks and drinks...and just down the street from the beach!

Love the Picnic Basket! Perfect for take out, walk over to the sea wall, beach or park. The selection is huge, bread is awesome and help is friendly. Price wise its comparable to a Subway (not counting the 5 dollar foot long) but taste wise Picnic Basket puts chain stores to shame. (even Wendy's now costs $20 for two people)...and to the people who complain about not fresh or well made, try talking to someone there, I am sure they would happily remake your meal (and it helps if someone new knows if they are doing something wrong:) Good Eats!

We stopped in on Labor Day, which probably wasn't the best day to try this place out. I don't think there A team was working or even close by. We put in an order for 10 sandwiches, which Ill admit is a big order, but we waited for over 45 minutes. Several customer's had come, ordered, eaten and left while we waited. We were later told that the person taking the orders was new...and had written all the orders on separate tickets. We were also overcharged which we didn't realize until we left, shame on us. 10 sandwiches for $101.00 when most were priced around $7.50. Sandwiches were fair at best and didn't include everything listed on the menu. I don't normally complain about restaurants, we eat out quite often, but I felt like I had to say something.

I was surprised by the overall high reviews regarding the food. They have a good, extensive sandwich menu however what you get for the price isn't really worth it in my opinion. I had the grilled chicken mozzarella wrap and I'm not sure if the woman didn't know how to roll a wrap or the way they do it is completely different from a wrap but it was a laid out tortilla folded over with the ingredients sticking out from the top. No where near rolled or wrapped but to each there own I guess. Either way the tortilla fell apart and the dressing it was supposed to have in it leaked all over so I ended up just eating it tortilla-less. You do have to wait about 8 minutes for your food which isn't too bad but not ideal if you're going to grab a bite to go. Service was average and the ambiance is fine. The focaccia bread that comes on the other sandwiches looks good! I'm sure there's a sandwich on the menu for everyone...I'll just have to come back another time and see if I discover mine.

Grabbed a couple of Subs or "Baguettes" to go for the beach one day and I'll admit I was nervous at first looking at the size of the rolls. I was told they were 8 inches but they're a skinny 8 inches. I think considering the price and quality it's a fair deal, but if you're used to large subs at Jersey Mikes filling you this may not be the place to go.

The food is of superb quality. Eating there is a treat for me... I'm about it! There is a nice ambiance inside, its really close to the beach, and there is a variety of other unique products inside as well.

Like-able. You have to wait a while to receive your order but it's worth it. I ordered a "Reuben Dog" because it was cheap and sounded tasty.. Yes, it was tasty.

Best sandwich shop around! I've been going here for years. I have tried other places (a little closer) but they are not to be compared to the quality of the Picnic Basket. They will have everything you need for a day at the beach or just for a great lunch. I highly recommend!
(5)George C.
Excellent selection and quality is top shelf. They use Boar Head meet and bake their own rolls every day. We live in Narragansett year round. Been here for 28 yrs. This is the best sandwich shop in town. Hands down.

Picnic Basket is honestly one of the best places in the world! I went to URI and when I was told about this palce it was like God's gift to mankind! I will now always go back and I have to say I've got some people addicted as well. Every single sandwich is GREAT & Fresh! They only use the best ingredients in their sandwiches. I perfer the Proscuitto and tomato on the Baugette...OMG! Not to mention the atmosphere is super cute. It is really close to the beach, so in the summer time watch out! Lines out the door! Definitely worth the wait though and if you get bored waiting they have board game cards on the table to keep you occupied! I wish I still lived in Rhody so I could eat there!

I used to really enjoy this cafe for a place to grab lunch, but the last few times I've been there the food is consistently bland. No flavor. Very disappointing.

Followed yelp advice and stopped her for a couple of take out sandwiches for a beach picnic with the kids on a Saturday in April. Arrived at noon and a long line from the counter to the door, and all tables filled, but the line moved fast. Had a special - roast beef, slaw, dressing on rye and a grilled shrimp w lettuce/tomato wrap. Both were very good, ample light lunch for two adults and two children preoccupied w/ kite flying. Plenty of sandwich, wraps and salad choices. Things looked fresh and staff attentive and fast. Would definitely come here again.

This place USED to rock. The last time I went, I ordered a Cajun roast beef on a grinder roll. It was supposed to have Lettuce, tomatoes and onions and it was one of the WORST sandwiches I have ever had in my life. I work VERY close to the picnic basket, and I will not send people there for lunch. Over priced too! A sandwich, chips and drink would cost you at least 12$
(2)Nicholette P.
I'm a URI student, and this place is great for good, fresh inexpensive food! Gets pretty crowded on a nice day, so get ready to wait in line! Its right across from the beach, so easy to walk too!
(4)Rita g.
lots of variety, the quality of food is acceptable. it's usually dirty inside and is WAY overpriced.

I was really excited about this place, especially when I went in and saw the menus hanging above the counter. I was hoping for a ton of fresh veggies, and good quality meats. The bread was good, and the atmosphere was fun, but it was tough to order. there was an ORDER NOW sign on the left, and when i stood there to order nobody took my order, so then I went to the register and he told me i had to go over to the sign. I got my sandwich, and it was bland... turkey, chipotle aeoli (mayo), lettuce and tomato. I was expecting some more veggies and a little more sauce.... For what I paid, I was not too impressed. It was better than a chain for sure, but it had a lot of potential.

My favorite sandwich there is the "The Manny" with prosciutto and turkey on a baguette with lettuce, tomato, and mayo with pickle. I want one right now!

We moved to Rhode Island January of 2012 and we discovered the Picnic Basket on my Birthday in March 2012. I LOVE their sandwiches! I have never been a BIG sandwich fan until I came to this small shop in Narragansett. Now, we make sure we at least come by every weekend. We would grab a sandwich there more often, but they close at 5PM during Fall/WInter/Spring. It is a great place to grab a delicious sandwich on your way to or from the beach. I started with trying a different sandwich every time, by trying whatever was the special of the day, and I enjoyed all of them. I did this for about a year. The last 2 months I have stuck with their tuna sandwich on a baguette with muenster lettuce, tomato and banana peppers. The wait can get a bit long for a sandwich shop because it isn't like subway where everything is already sliced and prepared. Here, they slice the meat and cheese to order and their meats and cheeses and bread really makes all the difference. Their different sauces are delicious also. The owners a super nice and we really enjoy eating there and so does our dog Lilly. When the weather is nice, they put a few tables and chairs outside, which is great because our dog can come sit with us and enjoy a small piece of our meal. I almost forgot, I also really enjoy their soups, ESPECIALLY the tomato-chicken vegetable soup. There is something about eating a sandwich and accompanying it with a delicious soup that is so comforting. They do offer half sandwiches. They also offer different pasta salads and other salads. They sell homemade hummus and their shop is also filled with different baskets for sale. Give this place a try.... it is all about finding the best sandwich for You.

For a slow day and a single order, they took extremely long (30 minutes) to make a simple chicken sandwich. The counter lady was unfriendly. The food is average. Expect to see a lot ( I mean a lot ) of anoying teenagers.
(2)David J.
Great selection of unique sandwiches both hot and cold. Love there selection of hot chicken sandwiches. very clean, much nicer than the name implies. They use top quality deli meats and the prices are very reasonable. Choice of breads for the sandwiches and awesome home made cookies. It's like a good New York Jewish deli which is rare today. The owner and staff are really friendly. I'm a regular!

First, regarding the product: the sandwiches are DELICIOUS!! Love their turkey in any form. Pepper turkey especially!! Unfortunately, a major absence of any kind of system makes me hesitate to return. And I have visited many times before. My biggest qualm is their sheer lack of customer service. This quality is of equal importance to the product. The sandwiches are a 10. Customer service (esp at point of sale) is a solid ZERO. The man who runs the register lacks even a glimmer of personality. I'm not looking to make a new best friend but this particular guy is a poor fit to greet paying customers. He gave the impression that he did not care that anyone chose to visit the PB or if they ever came back again. Just a dead beat type of person with NONE of the people skills that one would expect when forking over ten bucks for a sandwich. I've seen better POS skills at a Providence Subway. As crazy as this may sound, if the PB replaced the POS person with a friendly, professional and gracious person (with a pulse, at least) then perhaps people who look for those traits in a venue would be more apt to return. I enjoy raving about great places and people. I will admit that their sandwiches are awesome!! But I'd avoid returning based on my experience with a POOR point of sale experience. Lose THAT bum and you win me back!!

Great sandwiches, and consistent for years and years. However, always call ahead your order. Unless you want to be stuck behind a tourist who can't make up their mind on Swiss or cheddar.

I lived in Narragansett for 3 years now and I just recently went here. It's a nice under the radar spot that has a huge selection of fresh sandwiches. I got the prosciutto sandwich and it was simple and very good.
(4)Emma K.
My absolute place to grab some food on the way to or from the beach! Their sandwiches are always AMAZING, and they have such a wide variety of options! The bread is always awesome and perfectly compliments the sandwiches. Their drink and snack selection are also wonderfully vast, and it's so close to the beach! I don't know what more you could ask for! I recommend getting the "Moonwich" (warm chicken salad, lettuce, cranberry sauce, melted Muenster cheese, and mustard). It sounds like a crazy combination, but it is literally the BEST sandwich I have ever had!
(5)Rebecca D.
The food is consistently good here, but a bit pricey because of its proximity to the beach. Also, the portions could be a bit bigger.
(3)MJ K.
I love the picnic basket. I love it. Everything is delicious, fresh and creative. It will cost you more than Subway, but there's a reason for that. Try the HMT or any of the specials. Worth the drive, worth the wait in the summer, worth everything.
(5)Jim P.
Good food. Looooong wait. The bread is kind of weird, not in a good way.
(3)Bryce J.
Great sandwiches and bread been here many times!!! Service is not always fast, especially in summer, but it's worth the wait. The Odd Couple is my Favorite and quality is consistent in all their food. Mark and Doreen are very nice too!
(4)Colleen M.
This is a great place to grab a quick lunch. Our recent visit was mid February so we didn't have to witness the beach crowd. The menu is huge - all kinds of sandwiches, salads, even hot dogs. The service is friendly and fast. They have a few large tables and toys that keep the kids busy during the short wait for our food.
