Having grown up on Cape Cod and worked in local seafood restaurants, I do know better than to stop at any such place near a ferry landing. BUT, we were hungry upon our return from Block Island and made the HUGE mistake of eating at this miserable excuse for an eatery. We ordered two chowders, a fish sandwich, and crab cakes. The chowder was essentially warm milk with some half-cooked potatoes tossed in, and a dismal smattering of CANNED minced clams (I'm guessing this was Snow's canned clam chowder fresh from the shelves of the nearest Stop & Shop). The consistency made skim milk seem thick... The crab cakes were fried balls of bread that, at some time in the distance past, probably had a piece of crab meat waved over it by way of a passing introduction. The fish sandwich was palatable, but remarkably tasteless. Happily, I think I have now found the Worst Restaurant Ever... So anything else can only be an improvement... Avoid this travesty at all costs

Sea food for a trip out to sea A little sea food restaurant virtually across the street from the Block Island Ferry. Not a particularly big place, just some tables and booths to sit in but they are nicely spread out so you don't feel all scrunched while you devour your food. They have the usual seafood buggy things like scallops, oysters, shrimp and lobster and a great sea platter. Good calamari for starters and plenty of burgers, dogs and fries for fools that don't like seafood. You can even get something called the diet delight plate but of course I have no personal experience with that particular item. A very casual decor which is what you would expect in this king of place. They have a nice television that will usually have some sporting thing on and some cool pictures on the wall of Point Judith lighthouse. They also have a very cool lighthouse clock that makes lighthouse noises on the hour. Certainly not the place if you expect fancy gourmet seafood but a pleasant and relatively inexpensive place for a quick bite while waiting for the ferry.

No complaints with my fried clams. It's typical greasy fried seafood. They have basic window style ordering with both indoor and outdoor seating. No wait service. Their location is somewhat convenient because they're directly across the street from the Block Island ferry docks. Personally if I were going to Block Island I wouldn't eat here because there are definitely better options on the island. Perhaps this place is better suited to grabbing some grub for the car ride home. I can't speak about the freshness of the seafood, but Champlin's Seafood down the street probably has fresher seafood and carries a better reputation. At least at Champlin's, they have a seafood market downstairs where you can actually see the stuff swimming in tanks.

If you like watery chowder, spongy clam cakes, and frozen, mass produced fish, come on down to sunny Galilee where you can have it all deep fried in murky oil at Jimmys Portside! However, if you prefer your food to be fresh (as opposed to fresh-frozen), i would have to recommend you pass on this place. The clam strips were chewy and tasted like dirty oil. they were crispy for about a minute then promptly turned soggy - as is expected with frozen seafood. I don't know what else they were frying in that oil, but it ruined my meal. If you are tricked into buying food here, don't even bother complaining; your criticisms will fall on deaf ears. These people know that the vast majority of their customers are tourists so their goal is to sell you food just once. They could care less about quality or customer service. If anyone reading this can find me one Narragansett local who is a regular here, i will swallow my own nuts.

I really like this place. I was looking for an average restaurant with seafood dishes I recognized and came across this restaurant. My daughter loved the seafood Diablo and I really enjoyed the fried seafood combo and the clam chowder. I always make sure to stop here when in town. If you do stop by, make sure to go to the gift shop located right next to it... They have really good salt water taffy.

Amazing lobster bisque!! Holy cow. Also very friendly staff; I let them know that I needed to nurse my newborn and they happily accommodated my request for a seat near the back. Would say that I would go back again but I'm already here for a second time.

Went here for the first time and tried their clam cakes. The clam cakes were just a ball of flour soaked in oil and only had a"few" small clam meats. Waste of money. Also, not to mention the bad service and attitudes toward customers. I asked for a fork nicely and the lady questioned the need for one, saying it won't even pick up the clam cakes...Am I the one using it or are you?! If you are looking for good fast seafood eats, look elsewhere. Do not go to this place.

This is nice joint just across from the ferry. The interior is nothing to write home about, it was clean and laid out just fine. We all had fish and chips. The fish is lightly battered in a flour / corn mean coating and fried just right. So if you are a beer batter fan, this might not be your cup of tea. For those that like fish in different ways, this was really good. The portions were very big. No one could finish off the meal. The fries were some f the best I have had. Crisp on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. In the end, I think they are still frozen fries, but they were cooked great. The slaw was of the creamy variety and was very well done. I personally had multiple servings. The great thing is that we were there during the off season and the place had a constant flow of locals. We talked to some of the folks before entering and they all spoke highly. So if you are in the area or heading over to block island and want a good meal without all of the Summer tourist nonsense, this would be a great place to go.

Lobster special, something like 17.98, but here is the rub - comes with nothing except free ice water. Ok, so you need to order fries or slaw, we ordered slaw (not bad) but the lobster was over cooked, (boiled or something like that) because the water that poured out of them was scary. Unhelpful waitress. One chance, they failed.

I went there today! there were so many delicious things on the menu, I had a hard time trying to choose just one. I started out with their Bloody Mary Port side special. For the meal, I chose the Seafood Platter( Draggers Delight) All of it was great! the staff was pleasant. I tried to meet with Jimmy, but he was way too busy. The Seafood Platter was excellent! As it had a bit of everything, Clams,Scallops,Fish, Lobster Salad,Fries,Coleslaw and tarter sauce. It was well worth the trip there! And I drove sixty miles each way!

Frozen soggy seafood right next to the ocean. Gross. I wasn't feeling very adventurous, so I ordered fish and chips. On the menu, it was listed as a favorite there, so I figured I'll give it a shot. It was listed as being flounder, but who actually knows. First bite I could tell it was frozen. Mushy, saturated with oil, tasteless. Not so good for 18.99$. The "chips" part was the same story. Mushy, saturated, tasteless. My friend got the seafood plate... What a disaster. Listed as containing fish, scallops, stripped clams, lobster, and shrimp. Everything again tasted store bought, frozen, saturated in oil and tasteless. The scallops were the only thing that had any sort of flavor, even those were mostly batter and oil. We managed to choke most of the 26$ dollars down with the store bought tartar sauce, and left. Our server was very friendly and quick to help. She deserves to be in a place where there are actually customers.

Went in for a snack of clam cakes and chowder. I'm not a huge fan of clam cakes, but for whatever reason they tasted much better than I remember. Lots of clam flavor. They were crispy and hot with a nice doughy center. Maybe because they were smaller in size so they ratio was just right. Won't be a regular meal but just right for a snack.

I'd give it no stars if I could. This was probably the worst excuse for a meal I've ever eaten that I was expected to pay for. Our expectations were already pretty low given the impression given from the 1970s cafeteria decor, but our experience didn't even live up to those! Apart from the lobster roll, which hubby said wasn't that bad, everything served to our party of four seemed to come straight off a Cisco truck. Nothing was fresh. And even at that, it was BAD. One minuscule piece of clam in a clam fritter. Ore-ida style fries not even cooked through. Chowder so watery you could see through it, practically. As for my salmon, I knew it wouldn't be fresh since salmon isn't from around these parts, but it was like eating cardboard, literally. I freezer burned, thin, overcooked bad piece of fish. There are plenty of decent restaurants in RI to get this type of fare....skip Port Side.

I have been eating at the Portside for as long as I can remember and have been always happy with the food and service. Haven't been there for a few years because it was always a special place to take my mom who has since passed away. Was craving some seafood and thought Portside was the place to go, so I packed up the car with my girlfriend, her daughter and her friend and off we went. We got there about 6pm on a Sunday and the first thing I noticed was the redecoration of the restaurant which made it look more modern and clean. We sat at a table and was promptly waited on but it seemed our waitress was in a bit of a rush to take our order. It wasn't because they were busy because they were not. Very surprising for a warm summer Sunday especially that the BI ferry was unloading. We took a few minutes to decide on our order but the kids finally made a decision. I ordered fried whole clams and a cup of white chowder, my order was mediocre at best. The chowder was very watery and full with potatoes and little clams and bland taste. The whole clams were small and had no taste, the fries were greasy. Only received a dab of coleslaw and tarter sauce with the meal. The other meals were just as disappointing. We had a lobster dinner which was over done. Fish and chips they were bland and greasy and stuffies which were the size of little necks also the kids has lobster bisque which was very think and also very bland not creamy and rich in flavor like a good bisque should be. I hope they were having a bad day but from the amount of people who were at other restaurants in the area I don't think they were.

Best seafood in Narragansett! Forget the tourist traps like Iggy's and George's. If you want great food and great service, go to Jimmy's. Jenn served us, and was a delight from the second we walked in. And don't be surprised if you actually see Jimmy and his adorable mother Debbie at the restaurant when you stop in. I enjoyed everything I had...couldn't stop eating. They have the best lobster bisque I've ever had...yes, there's real chunks of lobster in it. The clam cakes are a must have. The fried lobster tail came with warm melted butter and was salt and peppered perfectly. The lightly battered fried shrimp was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. I'll definitely be back for more.

We were very surprised and delighted with our dining experience! We have been summer residents in Narragansett for 15 years but ate at Port Side only once before many years ago. At that time it was a typical beach greasy food place so haven't been back. Decided to give it a try based on some reviews here. The decor is updated and very well done. We shared grilled swordfish and grilled sea scallops. The swordfish is a 14 oz portion (compare to another area restaurant has 8 oz for same price!). Both were very well prepared and delicious and served with fries and cole slaw. Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant even though she had several other tables to tend. The only negative comment we have is the restaurant has a very limited choice of wine.

Not that it was bad, but $30 for a lobster roll with salty port type sauce that was too salty and not even a platter that included fries or a taste of cole slaw, along and a pint of chowder?

Sorry to report cakes and chowder not so good. Glad I didn't get anything else? Too many choices for me to ever give 2nd shot.

I am wicked amazed. Today I stopped by on a whim looking to buy some seriously stinky greasy seafood like I expect to get in Galilee. I am not a seafood fan I have to tell you. I grew up eating seafood my whole childhood. Like my Mother with beans: if I never ate seafood I would not really miss it. On that note: my Mother can fillet, bake, broil, grill, steam, fry (but not deep fry, I've not ever seen her do that,) parboil, poach do just about anything with any meat including offal. So I know badly prepared seafood. And I actually enjoy (rarely,) an order of fish and chips. Probably because I didn't eat fish in that style when I was young. On to the review. I approached the outdoor window. It was clean and although covered with menus it wasn't caked with oil or food particles. Being a Monday night there was a foreign family, an elderly couple and a teenage couple. Not many people. I was expecting really bad food, stuff that had been waiting in the hopper under the warming lights. Looking at the opening the "Special" caught my eye: A pint of clam chowder (white, red or Rhode Island style,) and a dozen clam cakes for $12.95 That's a pretty good price. So I ordered that. White chowder please, it isn't creamy but that's okay. Under the appetizers I saw that I could order some steamers (for you out-of-towners these are soft shelled clams, the ones with necks that they deep fry in buns, but instead of deep fried their steamed in shell.) at Market Price. I asked how much they were and was told I could get a dozen or two dozen. I believe $17.95 for the dozen I can't remember but it added up to about $32 even. I hate steamers. As a kid I enjoyed digging them up out of the clam flats. My Mom never cleaned them though. We ate them fresh from the brine. Gritty nasty belles and ugly turtle neck discards were what I remembered. But Mom was home and my sister was visiting. I knew they might enjoy them. My Mother ate 4! I can't believe it! She had 2 cups of the chowder (cut with milk and heavy cream, the salt gets to her,) and even ate a clam cake! I was ecstatic! Mom can hardly eat anything and I rarely cook her seafood because I am so bad at it. My sister couldn't believe it when I told her to please finish the steamers. She told me they were sweet and they had no grittiness. And she was right. I had some of the necks and I couldn't believe that the tell tale stink that old seafood retains was not there. The small clam cakes were wonderful barely greasy but not heavy and full of clams. The soupy chowder was rich, full of potatoes and clams and was very good for a non-creamy style chowder. The only thing I thought it lacked was black pepper so I added my own. Coming here was the best idea I had all summer. I'm glad I came, I suggest you come too! BTW I took our meal to go. There is a large area outside for people to eat at picnic tables that hasn't changed much since I was a kid. It's not haute cuisine, you'll find seagull poop on the benches. But if you're walking back to your car from the beach it's a place where you can plop the kids and get the family a nice lunch. There are other options for the kids or anyone that doesn't like seafood. I haven't tried the other dishes but if it's anything like what I bought today I'd be willing to get a burger there. You can also eat inside the restaurant if you don't care to be outside. This place is your traditional New England Glorified Seafood Shack, remember that. And like when Galilee was a true fishing village, there were drinking establishments up and down the road. This place has the booze. I don't really drink so I can't vouch for it's bar but it's one of the few left.
