Wow... this is one of the best Asian/Japanese places in RI... my husband and I kind of stumbled on this place one night, and we are glad we did.... We've been there often since. The best appetizer EVER is called Seafood Dynamite... this is incredible, you have to try it... comes in a half shell and is just the most tasty thing ever. I've never seen it offered at any other Japanese restaurants. It's a very clean place, the service is always good, and the food is top notch. Most of the other items on the menu are standard Japanese fare, my husband loves their soups... This is a gem of a place, don't be fooled by the front of the restaurant... it's located in a strip-mall..... you will LOVE this place!

This place was so mediocre. the place smelled of rotten fish and ac a was off. I use yelp all the time and a 4 star place had never let me down, except for this one. Not to mention this place is in Johnston. I your looking for good sushi, go to providence to either Huruki east, ran zan, or Sakura.

I cant wait to try more foods there. The service are good, the 2 waitress are very friendly too. Im sure it is a nice place to eat, talk, date, and party because I enioy it so much!

Don't judge this place by the storefront look (in a plaza ). The decor inside was nicely decorated but not a lot of space inside. The food was fresh, ample portions and delicious. A couple of us had the tofu dish, vegetables were fresh, tofu was fried and cooked perfectly. It came with soup and salad, very reasonably priced. One of us had the sushi which she thought was nicely presented and fresh. One of us had the salmon dish which he thought was very well prepared and took some time for him to finish as the portion size was generous. All in all, we were all very satisfied with the restaurant and although not from the area we will return when in town.

Homegirl just celebrated her birthday. And it is notchyo buisiness how many candles were on my cake. But if you know homegirl, you know how deep, how furious, and how scandalous her love is for japanese cuisine. sushi, and sashimi, and nigiri, oh maki! Yes, that was a play on words. So lets talk about this here "Koi". Homegirl wanted something a little special: an escape from the urban jungle and into a zen garden with the aroma of cherry blossom dancing in my nostrils, a traditional mai performance by the lily pads, and perhaps a monk massaging my feet on a velvety carpet. After all this wasn't just an ordinary day, this was THE day of homegirl! As the bass filed beets fizzled down, me and my crew pulled into the parking lot. Homegirl's jaw dropped. While homegirl believes in treating people with care and compassion, this day was not about people. A slew of 'yo mama' jokes were nearly to be sprayed like a hose out of homegirls mouth, due to the disappointing appearance of her what-was-but-a-dream birthday dinner experience. It was a storefront. A little side slot in a strip mall. Underwhelming and washed up looking. While i may go by "homegirl", you best be trippn' if you think your gonna give homegirl some Coors Light and Keno for her B-day. My mother did not push for 9 hours for this nonsense. Mascara staining my porcelain cheeks, I trudged on. Each click-clack on the pavement was a warning to check-yo-self, because homegirl was coming. The door opened and some signery stared me in the hazels. Japanese typography, and a koi fish...then some elegant stone walls, and black accents. The server thought she was helping me, but after this review, she best believe homegirl is doing them a public service. The place was nice inside. Salt depleted eyes for nothing. I ordered 3 sushi rolls, edamame, and sashimi. So good. Fresh and clean. 3 rolls cost about $15, and i took half of them to go. While the appearance was utterly deplorable, take homegirls advice and walk in blind folded until you get through thee doors. Recommended sushi spot fo sho.

Checked this place out last night with a group of friends. Despite it being 7:30 on a Saturday night, we were literally the only customers in there the entire time. Oddity aside, the food was absolutely fantastic. My wife and I split three sushi rolls, all of which were comprised of fresh, high-quality fish. We also had some very tasty edamame before the sushi. I'd definitely recommend heading to Koi if you want some solid sushi without dealing with the "crowds" of Providence - even if you are the only customers in there!

Went to Koi a few nights ago with some friends. We heard it had very good sushi and with a Groupon available we decided nows the time to try them out. The space is very small but cute. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We ordered several appetizers and sushi rolls to try out. Everything was very good and fresh tasting. I ordered a chicken hibachi dinner which for $15 came with a very large portion of chicken and it was very good. Also ordered dessert, the always tasty Exotic Bomba which is pretty much the same everywhere you go so it was good as always lol Several of us ordered hot tea and it had a strange after taste so I wouldn't recommend it. Almost like it was left to steep too long or something, it tasted burnt. Besides the tea the experience was pleasant and we'll probably come here again in the future if we're in the area.

The sushi is good & fresh. The drinks are great. I really want to love this place but I give it a 3 star rating because the service is just 'ok'. It's a small venue, and when I've been there, it isn't packed. They have a bell system to let you know when food is ready, so you KNOW when your stuff should be arriving at the table...but it doesn't. Slow on water glass refill, slow when retrieving our fried ice cream, so the batter was no longer warm, slow on generally everything we asked for. If they can get the service straightened out, I would gladly update my review.
Doomed to be known as "the place that used to be Wasabi" this place is nothing like its predecessor. The fish is fresh, the decor has been completely redone, and while a touch on the expensive side, I really enjoy the food here. Some of the "special rolls" (american sushi) are just too overdone and heavy, but the simple stuff shines. Some highlights: yellow tail with jalepeno, all naruto rolls (rolled in cucumber, no rice), all tataki dishes and the koi wonton (essentially crab rangoon, but with a whole shrimp inside) Only 4-stars because the wine and drink list is pretty sad, actuality it's terrible - but the food is second to none in this area.

Why is this place not packed? The sea bass and the red snapper are so tender and delicious. The hibachi is great and the service is also very nice. come here and eat!

Amazing. Had the dancing dragon, naruto, and Thai spicy something roll. All so fresh and amazing. One of the freshest and best I've had in RI, literally. Will definitely be back....also felt it was necessary to mention my first experience with sushi was from when I lived in Hawaii, so I had no idea that was the freshest id ever have. That tells you how high my standard for freshness is!

Really adorable new sushi spot! It's in the old Wasabi location on Hartford Ave, but has been totally gutted and hugely updated. The inside is still small, but absolutely beautiful. The decor is very dark and intimate with pretty lighting at nighttime. They have a bar area, sushi bar, and dining tables. When we went for a late lunch, it was pretty empty but they did get quite a few takeout orders. They recently sent out their menu in the mail, which is how I heard about them in the first place. The service was friendly and efficient, but not anything spectacular. Awesome cocktail menu! So many options. I tried the "Mutant Ninja Turtle," which is made with green tea liqueur, Bacardi 151, blue curacao, pineapple and cranberry.... very tasty and came in a cute ceramic cup. I was also curious about the "Geisha Blossom" so I ordered that to share with my boyfriend and I loved that even more. It's made with Yukon Jack, triple sec, lime and cranberry... so kind of like a cosmo except much more bold. I think every cocktail here comes in a different cup that kind of goes along with the drink.... it's pretty cool. We stared at the menu for a long time, because it's HUGE! There are so many different specialty rolls to choose from that we had trouble picking what to get... so we ended up with a good assortment. Since we needed some time, we started with some apps; the yellowtail jalapeno and a simple cucumber avocado roll. The roll was very well put together, but its a very basic dish so there's not much to say about it. But the yellowtail app was awesome. It's one of my favorites to begin with, but this place does it much better than anywhere else. The jalapeno sauce is really delicious and has just the right amount of kick, and the fish was really really fresh. Finally we decided on rolls; the crazy tuna roll, the spicy girl roll, and the banana roll. The rolls were not bad, just not really what I was expecting. For the price, I was expecting fresh fish and not the shredded/mixed variety. The tuna roll did have fresh tuna and avocado on top, which were both very good. I also really liked the banana roll, which was an interesting combination of sweet and savory flavors. The spicy girl roll was okay; the only great thing about it was the fresh roe on top. I was expecting fresh fish and maybe some spicy mayo, so I was a little disappointed. They had green tea tempura ice cream for dessert, which we had to order because it's our favorite. The ice cream was very good quality and had a very strong green tea flavor which we really appreciated. We had to let it sit for a minute though because it was still very much frozen and we couldn't get through it with a spoon. Overall, a very good experience and a very lovely new place. We plan to return next time just for cocktails and dessert since they were so fabulous.

Unexpectedly finding ourselves in Johnston yesterday, we noted Koi Japanese Restaurant by the huge bright sign out front, and since it was lunchtime, we decided to give it a try. I have sort of OD'd on sushi lately, but can normally fit in a little more sushi most anytime. The menu was very large, the service was great, the restaurant was really lovely inside and very important to me, the bathroom was immaculate, well-lit and beautifully decorated. I ordered a very simple sushi/sashimi meal which came with miso soup and the usual small salad. Only thing I didn't like, though, was that the dressing on the salad was sort of mayonnaise based rather than the usual carrot.ginger dressing. It added unnecessary fat to the meal (I'm on a diet again as usual!) - but it tasted okay. Also, I was charged an additional $1.50 to substitute brown rice for white. There was barely any rice on the plate - some on a couple of pieces of sushi, and in the California Roll. To upgrade from white rice to brown rice in a large order of rice, it is $1.50 extra. I couldn't understand why they would charge so much for just a small handful - not even - of rice. C'est la vie. My friend had the bento box and it looked absolutely delicious - she said it was too. My food was as good as any sushi I have eaten (I have almost never had bad sushi - luckily - and it's pretty difficult to distinguish one sushi plate from another, other than by freshness and portion size.) Sushi was beyond fresh, and the portion size was more than adequate. This is a really good restaurant, and it's immaculate. I recommend it with the caveat of brown rice price and salad dressing.

Not bad. Came here last night. The restaurant is very small. The sushi prices are okay. There was only one waitress working here, which makes it difficult to get very good service. Might go back, might not. I wish I had chosen something else on the menu because my roll was too spicy :\

Absolutely delicious!! Randomly tried this place because of Groupon. Don't let the outside fool you, it's a really nice place. We shared a few rolls: spicy yellowtail, Amazing Roll (basically melted in your mouth) and Volcano Roll (took top spot on my all time favorite list of sushi rolls). I wanted a little something extra, so we also had the pineapple fried rice (4 lg shrimp, chicken, chopped pea pods and pineapple mixed in with fried rice). Everything was beyond our expectations. The specialty rolls are what set this place apart, but I may start craving the fried rice. Definitely going back.

This place rules. Super friendly staff and excellent sushi. I was bummed when Wasabi closed in the same space but this place has risen from the ashes and is a shining gem in the not so great culinary scene of Johnston. Anyone in the metro providence area who reads this, go here. It's very good and a stones throw from prov.

Very nice décor, friendly service, good sushi, and they have shirley temples. I love that they have sushi without rice and I can only find the cream cheese crab crunchy sushi here. I've been dreaming of it. I did not love the dressing on the salad or the beef katsu on the stick
