Despite the many, numerous, unbelievable take out options on the island, this is the one to go to. Sarcasm aside, Peking Garden really is delicious. Located in the quaint "Jamestown Mall" (think like, two other businesses), the customer service is extremely friendly and the food full of flavour. My fiancee and I used to walk the couple blocks from his house to pick up dinner on weekends. Out of all the Chinese takeouts I've been to, they hands down make the best Singapore noodles, anywhere. Chewy, moist and with big ole chunks of beef, I couldn't find a dry noodle in the bunch on any of the dozens of times we ordered from them. The fried rice, delicious and well seasoned while the egg rolls were always bursting with healthy MSG yumminess. Granted they tend to be a little more greasy than other Chinese places, their food certainly isn't swimming in it and I've never had an upset stomach. The prices were also extremely reasonable. I can't imagine anyone would actually visit Jamestown simply to eat Chinese grub from a dinky mini mall but in all seriousness, if you're chillin on the beach, there's nothing better. I'm going to assume the locals are well informed of its presence. Overall, perfect food for those late night drinkathons or dates on the cheap. Complete your evening with a frozen novelty ice cream from the gas station across the street and voila, romance on the beach.

Ordered the healthy steamed chicken shrimp & veggies. I didn't expect to be blown away or anything but come on. I was already disappointed they didn't have the walnut shrimp listed on their menu here on yelp. I will say that it was very hot and fresh and extremely healthy but they took healthy overboard on this one. It is literally just steamed meat and veggies. No seasoning or sauce whatsoever. The only trace of flavor was in the lemon slices which didn't bleed any flavor to the rest of the dish. They were just extremely bitter surprises. Emptied all the mustard and soy sauce I grabbed in there and it got even worse. Needs some sort of sauce. Also, their menu is an exact copy of a very mediocre place in Newport. Definitely not with the trip across the bridge.

I unabashedly love Peking Garden. They are a hole-in-the-wall chinese take out place. They do have about 3 or 4 tables in front of the counter that separates the kitchen from the dining/takeout area. The people that run this business have been running it for quite a while I believe and I think they are a family. The business is clean not beautiful. It is very business like, run efficiently and polite. They have never screwed up any of my orders, and always have the food ready when they say it's going to be which is usually "10 minutes". The food is American Chinese Food and it is prepared immediately. I'm cheap; I love a real bargain. The food here is a REAL bargain. I usually get the steamed peking dumplings, which come 8 to a tin and are under $5. they include the typical dipping sauce which is really good, sweet and savory not too salty. The Hot and Sour soup has tofu, shitake, celery and bean sprouts (if I remember correctly,) and is awesome for a cold or sinus problems $3.25 a qt. The General Tso's is crispy in a dark sweet/sour sauce and includes the red pepper pods and broccoli $8.50. The Crab Rangoon are generous sized and ok 10 for $4.60. These prices are much better than anything else I've seen in South County or Aquidneck. Even if I found something cheaper and closer I probably wouldn't go there because the food that they serve at Peking Garden looks and tastes hand made. Compare the dumplings to almost any other place you've been too. I have. They are shaped in the traditional way with a thicker dough than the wonton/egg roll pastry types I've seen at other places. Added to that the filling is mostly pork and very generous. The Rangoons are huge. Their sauces are robust and not bland like typical Chinese take out places. There vegetables are crisp fresh in their soups and entrees. I have never had their fried rice. Yes it's the only Chinese place on the island. If they had a dining room my Mother and I would go there probably 2 times a week. As far as I'm concerned it's a hidden gem like The J-Hop across the street. Like the other reviewers I will add that Jamestown has some beautiful sights to take your chinese food too like Fort Whetherill Park (with picnic tables,) Beavertail Park or any beach (like the one across from the Newport Toll Booths,) you can find. I go across the bridge to get my dumpling fix whenever I like and have no problem. The only problem anyone might have is that when you call make sure you listen carefully. Whoever picks up the phone most likely will have an Asian accent.

Got a take out order from here last night. First and last time. Staff seemed quite friendly, my guess is that its a family restaurant. A young boy and his dad/uncle were playing video games together on the TV. Seemed like happy friendly people, and my order was correct and ready on time. I chose very simple Chinese-American staples for my first time in. And well, I didn't finish my meal and instead threw it out, what does that tell you.. The Chicken Lo Mein was horrible. The noodles were overcooked nearly into porridge, and the flavors muted and muddled nearly as far. Difficult eating experience. The Roast Pork Fried Rice was much better in comparison. The rice was soft and overcooked, and the micro pork chunks dry and leathery, but it didn't remind me of hot oatmeal in the way that the Lo Mein did. The General Tso's Chicken was fried dark and crispy on the outside, with wet raw dough serving as a squishy filling around the chicken in the center. Then dunked in a sticky sweet saucy glue to finish. The dish was served with a nicely steamed broccoli on the side. Just awful.

Any place is always much better than no place. Peking Garden is a small, very typical Chinese restaurant. There probably are zillions of them, practically identical to this one scattered across the galaxy. The one difference is that this one is in the town of Jamestown on Conanicut Island. That means this is the only Chinese restaurant on the island. In fact they're just aren't many restaurant of any type on the island, especially opened in the winter. That means if you want Chinese you eat here or you go off the island or you don't eat at all. Peking Garden has a few tables inside but is primarily a take out place. It's only a 2 or 3 minute walk to Narragansett Bay so you can get the food and take it down to munch by the water with great views of Newport, the Pell Bridge and Rose Island. The food is actually pretty good. Certainly not gourmet or even close to gourmet but it's better than many other little take out type places I have sampled. The veggies are nice and fresh and never over cooked and they don't use the dreaded MSG or tons of salt. The people working here are very friendly and you can tell them how you want your food and they actually listen. If you say you want something spicy, be assured it will be spicy. I go here frequently for their lunch specials because for less than five bucks you can get filled up on a whole bunch of pretty tasty food. Shrimp and Broccoli, General Tso, Chicken and Cashews and a whole passel of other old favorites. They actually have a pretty extensive menu for such a dinky little place. Certainly not a great Chinese restaurant by any means but I've never had a bad meal here. And it's always a hell of a lot better than going hungry.

I got sesame chicken and chicken w/ broccoli. It was possibly the best Chinese food I have had in many, many years. The sesame chicken was crispy on the outside but still very moist in the middle. Often, other places will dry it out. The rice is fluffy and tasty. Not greasy like many places will do. Wish I lived nearby so I could come back to this place again.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
