Heard about this place and had to try it out. Forgot to leave a review...for its worth leaving one. Came in and was greeted with very friendly servers, very accommodating as well. We had to switch tables to a booth. The place seems to be busy even on a weeknight. We ordered the wheat pizza and it was awesome! We paired it with Sangria and it was really tasty. Would definitely come back here and try out the rest of the menu. Once again, the place is worth trying out and more.

First time to The Big Cheese...The lot was PACKED on a Tuesday night! I couldn't even find a space on the street around the entire block. We almost had to call it quits until someone finally left. What kind of place IS THIS? The decor is straight out of the 80's..dark wood everywhere, with a homey feel. Service was super friendly and it seemed everyone knew everyone else. The side salad was incredible..ice cold plate with a large portion of chilled iceberg, shaved carrot, thick cucumber slices..perfectly tossed with their house dressing. Little Man had a kids sized pizza (about 10 inches in diameter). He's not even 2 years old, but he devoured it. I've never seen him eat pizza like that. I had the Chicken Parm, which was excellent...nothing unexpected. Can't wait to try other dishes!

My first visit there even though I'm in Cranston all the time. The food was good just not great. A great " back pocket" place but not top of my list. The ingredients were definitely fresh, but it seems that maybe one ingredient was missing that would have put it over the edge for me. I only had pizza so that's all I can review. The crust was really good and I rarely eat the crust, but i ate this one. My only peeve: pizza where the cheese falls off...lost a star for that. Lost the other star because the server never addressed me, she wasn't memorable, practically tossed my drink to me after I ordered it. Never checked on us again and after I paid with my card, which had my name on it, never addressed me by name. Am I just old school or what?

I went here last night after a long day at work and a not so great birthday. I wanted to leave the craziness of "the Hill" and just try to enjoy a casual dinner. I'm so glad I told my boyfriend I wanted to check this place out. Usually birthday dinners for me seem to always be fancy and expensive but this time I wanted to trade my heels for sneakers and enjoy some delicious food in a relaxed setting. Our waitress, Erin, was awesome. We told her we were first-timers and she made some great suggestions. We started off with (I forget the exact name) a Spinach Pie stuffed with a Greek salad.... This is Hugeeeee and delicious. And oh, their salad dressings that we read about on here were to die for. Loved their newly added Balsamic one. We then decided to split a calzone ... #12? I think. Eggplant, sausage, hot peppers, cheese ... Again awesome. The ingredients were so good, fresh, and definitely homemade. These two items had us stuffed. And we're good eaters. We will definitely be back. And the staff heard it was my birthday and brought me a Dessert which they normally don't have. So sweet. Thanks for making my birthday better.

Hailing from DC, where the pizza tends to be pricey and/or godawful, I am always wowed by the fantastic pies in these dive-y Rhode Island places. And Big Cheese is one of the best I've tried yet. My sister in law and I split a small (ha ha) Greek salad and the small whole wheat Mediterranean pizza. The Greek dressing here is very tasty and the salad was basic, but fresh and delicious. The pizza was out of sight. A light, crackly thin crust pizza topped with bright tasting sauce and excellent toppings. My husband had the ravioli and meatballs and was in heaven. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was rich, and he thought the meatballs had great depth of flavor - his guess is that they're made with beef and veal. Both my brother and mother in law had mini pizzas, topped with all sorts of meats and cheeses, plus salads. Everybody was pleased with their meal - and the prices were silly awesome. The (massive) small salads were about $5 each, as were the mini pizzas. Fun fact from our waitress: the mini and small pizzas are made with the same amount of dough, just stretched out to different sizes. If you prefer a thicker crusted pizza, the mini is the way to go, while my thin crust loving self is all about the small.

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Cranston. Everything about this place is incredible. The staff is super friendly and warm. The retro yet somehow not distasteful outdated vibe of the decor makes you feel at home. The food is consistently delicious and well-prepared. They even added Dogfish Head IPA to the draught list...any restaurant that does such a thing gets a nod of respect from me. The pizza is in the top tier of pizzas in its style in the greater Providence area. They have the right ratio down between crust, cheese, toppings, and sauce. Most places in the area are either all bread or all cheese. Big Cheese puts out a nice, well-balanced slice. Above all else, The Big Cheese has the world's BEST salad dressing...no questions asked. I'm not exaggerating. It is amazing...nectar of the gods type stuff. We never leave without buying a 16 oz cup of dressing to take home with us. You shouldn't either.

The search for my best-all-around pizza in RI has come to an end. I believe I've found it, in the whole wheat crust pies served at The Big Cheese & Pub. This place has it all: easy access from the highway; ample off-street parking; phenomenal service; and an extensive menu that includes the aforementioned pizza, as well as yummy salads, sandwiches and almost twenty different calzones. (Any sandwich on the menu can also be served as a calzone.) We tucked into a booth here last weekend for dinner. Our server, Kim, was incredible. Upon hearing we were first-time guests, she pulled out all the stops, providing samples of the restaurant's deservedly-legendary homemade salad dressing (you can buy it here, to take home) and red sauce. The Mister is very particular about his red sauce: for him, it can make or break a meal. And he gave this red sauce, which achieves just the right balance of acidic and sweet, two enthusiastic thumbs up. The meal started with a basket of the restaurant's homemade bread. Now normally, I hate to waste a good, hearty appetite on some white bread before a meal really gets rocking and rolling. But this is some tremendously good white bread and well worth a slice, or three. We split a tasty Greek salad, which, while technically only an accompaniment to the veal parmesan entrée, was large enough to be a meal on its own. The veal parmesan dinner was served on a bed of cheese ravioli from Venda. Then, we dug into the aforementioned pizza, and proclaimed that, after almost two years in Cranston, we'd finally met our perfect match. And you know what? It's just as good the next day, after sizzling for a few minutes in a frying pan. The atmosphere is warm, nostalgic, and welcoming. There's a bar area with a TV showing games, beside the main dining room, which fills up for dinner. The booth backs in the dining room pitch forward a little bit, which makes for a modicum of discomfort (maybe this was just our booth; I can't speak for more than that one at the moment). But the quality of the food and the kindness of your server will make you forget about the slightly odd, forward-tilted angle at which you're seated. It's all the better to face-plant into a plate of deliciousness, really. After dinner, Kim talked us into lingering over cups of coffee (there's no dessert menu, but who wants dessert, after a feast like this?). She told us some more about the restaurant, which is owned and operated by a Greek family that operates on a time-honored and crucial principal: always put the customer first. This is something that definitely comes across here (when a place lacks this approach, it's also really noticeable). After one visit, we already feel like family: late to the party, but welcomed in with open arms.

I love it here. Great prices, very good food and it's one of those places that you just feel comfortable in. Great neighborhood restaurant and bar.

The Big Cheese is a little tiny family restaurant with pretty good Italian food. The decor needs to be updated and the service wasn't that great but the food was pretty good and decently priced which made me forget about that. Definitely make reservations if you go. It's a packed place!

Greeeat pizza, and the mozz bread is to die for. My first visit and I must say it will not be my last. Although I was a lil shocked the chicken parm isn't breaded as usual, it was also pretty good. Our waitress Erin was a sweetheart and even offered to let me use her phone charger!! All in all, Big Cheese is "The Big Cheese"!! Check 'em out!

This place has fabulous food! Their red sauce is to die for. Even the house's salad dressing rocks! They actually get so many requests for this dressing that, while they won't give you the recipe, they sell small containers of it to go (but they don't sell the sauce, too bad). The salads are huge, the portions are large. I have only had Italian food there, that's what I go for. ANYTHING with their red sauce. It is SO SO SO good. You just have to try it. It's one of the best red sauce's in RI - and that's saying a lot, because there's a lot of red sauce in RI. I. LOVE.THIS.PLACE

This was an excellent treat! Now, if I can only recreate the salad dressing! We had dinner for nine and the table was ready quickly and the service was attentive and warm. The food came out all at once, a big plus when in a large group. Everyone was pleased with their meals and we bought some extra dressing to go. Definitely do this restaurant again!

I love this place. Good eats for a good price. They make their dough fresh every morning so calzones and pizzas are a must! Only complaint, their hours suck!

  • Kyra L.

Was recommended to try big cheese by many native cranston people and wow was I impressed. The salads are huge and the dressing is to die for. Got an eggplant calzone made with homemade wheat crust that was out of this world. Not your average pizza joint. Highly recommended

No matter where I've had pizza, it always pales in comparison to pizza from the Big Cheese. The original pizza is delicious, but my favorite is the thin wheat Meditteranean. As mentioned by many others, the salad dressing is phenomenal. If you don't want it in a takeout cup, I believe they will put it in a jar you provide (they aren't in the salad dressing business). Sauteed mushrooms with garlic bread is also delicious.

We were heading to Sobrero for mexican food but when I read all the glowing reviews about the amazing red sauce and Greek salad, we stopped here instead! The nicest wait staff ever - wow, they went above and beyond my ridiculously high expectations :). That marinara was sooo rich and good, they brought me three servings without me even asking - super generous and thoughtful of them. The Greek salad and garlic crazy sticks were so delicious, we could barely touch our main courses and took them home for the kids. Great value and service :)

A BIG wOOt-wOOt!! for The Big Cheese!! Pizza is slammin-- whether you go for a basic cheese n' roni on original crust or opt for a Gourmet or House Specialty, you can't go wrong-- high quality ingredients (and lots of them) make for tasty-tasty 'za! Next, let's talk about the salads... their monster-mega salads don't 'cheeze' out on the good stuff-- Greek salad with Feta for days, Tossed Salad w/ house dressing that I could drink by the gallon... mmm-mmm-yummy! I can't tell you much about any other dishes as I keep going back for salad & 'za! Now for a note on atmosphere: The front of the house is the 'pick-up area' for takeout. Register at the counter, and a couple booths for the self-serve diners. Main dining area leaves a bit to be desired-- clean and well-kept, but lit up like a cafeteria! I don't mind sharing space with other diners, but I don't necessarily want full visibility... dim the lights and the whole vibe will improve. I'm a barfly, and at The Big Cheese, that's the place to be-- fun & personable bartenders, a bar book-ended by TVs, and much more agreeable lighting-- now that's what I call winning!!

Based on a lg cheese pizza. The pizza was blah, the crust was hard as a rock & who cuts a round pizza in squares? First time & last time I order pizza from there.

  • M. D.

I will never eat here again... I ordered the #5 calzone, the ham/cheese/tomato/broccoli calzone, thinking it would be good... boy was I wrong! These people have no idea how to make a calzone! They made it a sub style - tomato, ham, cheese on top, and A POUND of broccoli lining the bottom wrapped in dough! If I wanted a sandwich I would've ordered one! And who in their right mind puts that much broccoli on something like that?! I order calzones all the time - they're supposed to be cheesy with the toppings cut up in little pieces. This was the COMPLETE opposite! It was so gross, I took off the broccoli, ate half of it, threw the other half away and now I feel so sick to my stomach. I heard their pizzas and salads were great, but whoever thought of making the calzones the way they do needs to go to chef school or something. SO NASTY! Last time I order from them!

It's true! The salad dressing is strangely addictive and the marinara is great. Huge portions of really good, no frills Italian food served in a slightly divey, dimly lit pub space. Some of the better eggplant parm I've found in RI. Calzones are also delicious. Never tried the pizza. Wait staff always very friendly.

A true Cranston staple! With the best and unique calzone combinations that the state has to offer, amazing house salad dressing jump off, all different types of delicious pasta dishes and white or wheat pizza crust from as far back as I can imagine this place does it right with great service and prices and food that makes this tried and true Guinea Happy! I suggest you check it out #CranstonLife

I have been going to the Big Cheese since I was just a little cheese (seriously... like 5 years old.) This had been a family owned operation for years and when the father finally sold the place he thought of what was best for the patrons and also sold the recipes to his famous dressings and sauces. They offer pick up and eat in with a pizza parlor feel in front and the dining room in the back. They have not changed at all but are still as clean and friendly as ever. A number of the original service crew is still around. Always start with a tossed salad with the house dressing. People should come from all over the globe for this family secret. I dream about the dressing and am salivating just writing about it. Pizzas and calzones are a great treat and they are also offered with a wheat crust. Try it with the wheat crust... it is smooth and just as crisp as normal (I am usually turned off by grainy wheat dough.) The pastas are good but what really makes them are the delicious sauces and meats. I LOVE the meatballs as they are meaty (not too much breadiness) and perfectly seasoned. I will ALWAYS go back and ALWAYS recommend it.

One word sums up The Big Cheese "AMAZING" I grew up eating here and now I live in Northern RI. I drive to Cransron to eat at the Big Cheese anytime I want pizza because I can't find anywhere in the smithfield/Lincoln/ Cumberland area that knows how to make pizza!!

I go every few months. Always great. Takeout is good too. Exceptional food for the price. On writing this review I just had a House Salad, dressing is fantastic. It came with my meal and is enough to feed 2. Chicken Parm and ravioli, excellent. Sauce is really good. Nice fresh bread. Service super friendly. Nice warm casual atmosphere.

Okay RI. I've been giving a lot of 5 stars lately, but I swear I don't find everything perfect. But when you stumble upon a gem, you can't hide it or lie about it. This place is more of a sit down than a take out. Went in and sat in the bar area (bar was packed). Went with my boyfriend and we ordered a small greek salad (small is enough to split) and a large original style pepperoni pizza. All was GREAT. They use good pepperonis! You can tell because they aren't flat on the pizza, they actually curl up at the edges and turn into like cups that hold the oil. haha. Crust is great, perfectly cooked. They have several different styles of pizza, they also have whole wheat crust pizza, calzones, they serve pasta dishes, appetizers, and sandwiches. I have the tendency to let my waitress know when it is my first time in a place, the guy next to us heard me say that and told us that he has been going there since 1971 and that we won't walk away unhappy. My boyfriend says he thinks the pizza is similar to Caserta's up on Fed Hill (I think it is better).

When I was a kid, I went out to eat all the time. My parents owned a liquor store in Cranston, Rhode Island and it was a family business for sure. Everyday after school, my dad would pick me up from school and take me to the store, where my mom was working. I would hang out there all day until it closed. My dad would often take me and my siblings out to dinner since we didn't have much capacity to cook. We would rotate through our favorite restaurants in Cranston, one of them being a pizza restaurant called The Big Cheese. The Big Cheese had the best pizza and we went there or got take-out from there at least once a week. I remembered how homey it was- it definitely was a family restaurant and a neighborhood gem. Well, when I first met my husband, I was on a mission to introduce him to the best pizza spots in Rhode Island. The first place I took him to was The Big Cheese and needless to say he fell in love. We went there a handful of times. . . but then I became vegan and low-gluten. The Big Cheese fell off the radar for a good few years. However, this past Saturday, I told my husband to pick any restaurant to go to for our date night. Now that I am eating gluten and dairy in moderation, The Big Cheese was his top pick. I was so excited to return for some of the best pizza in Rhode Island! The interior of The Big Cheese makes you feel like you're in a lodge or log cabin, making for a very cozy, casual setting. The menu features all kinds of Italian favorites, from pasta dishes to sandwiches to various parmagianas to of course, pizza. From what I can tell, everything is homemade, including their tomato sauce and signature salad dressing. To start, I ordered a small Greek salad, which was a simple garden salad topped with feta, olives and their amazing herby oil and vinegar dressing for which they are famous for. The small, by the way, is huge and I only could eat half! The veggies were so fresh and for such a simple salad, my taste buds were delighted. My husband remembered how fresh and delicious their salads were that he got one too (except his was topped with tuna salad!). For our pizza, we ordered a classic cheese pizza on whole wheat crust. I love how it is a round pizza, but cut into squares! Hands-down, The Big Cheese serves one of the top ten pizzas in Rhode Island. First, the crust is so perfect- it is chewy, but still maintains a nice crispiness. The whole wheat is so tasty too. It isn't too thick, but it is substantial enough to hold toppings without flopping. The sauce. . . oh the sauce! It is amazing! Homemade, tangy and sweet- it is awesome. The cheese is sprinkled on in ample amounts and quite honestly, all of the components together make for one killer slice! I had no trouble eating three pieces and honestly could have eaten more! My husband was so happy with his food (he had a salad with tuna salad on top, a side of veal parm and shared the pizza with me) that he ordered an extra tuna sub to go to enjoy at home. Not only was the food incredible, but so was the service. You definitely get the vibe that it is a family-owned restaurant and the waitstaff really gives you a lot of attention. Our waitress was great, always quick to refill my husband's diet Coke before he asked. All in all, The Big Cheese is where it's at, and it has been for years!

Aside from the food taking a bit of time to come out I can't say anything bad about this place. Having been several times over the years, I've enjoyed many dishes. Their 'crazy bread' is delicious and they have killer sausage links. I normally opt for the the farfalle pasta with sausage and meatballs. The meatballs are just OK - but the sauce has a nice sweet tang to it and is always consistent. I haven't had many pizzas from here but what I have (back in my baseball days) i remember to be tasty. Highly Recommend!

The quintessential, family-friendly, neighborhood, eat-in pizza joint featuring piping hot, thick, tasty pizza and all other local Italian favorites you might expect -- from calzones to pasta to salads. Overlook the cheesy (sorry) storefront and twenty year-old decor, and the friendly service and affordable prices will make you feel like one of "the family."

Soooo sooooo good! Mozzarella bread is amazing and the marinara is to die for! Took the homemade salad dressing home bc I read the other reviews and I was not disappointed! Super friendly staff, just kind of wish they delivered too!!

So after hearing about The Big Cheese, we finally decided to try it. We got a mini Original and a small Italian pizza with pepperoni and of course had to try the salad dressing. Didn't really care too much for the pizza to be honest - the crust was a bit tough and bland and sauce to me wasn't that great. Dressing was pretty good though. I will give it another shot one of these days

I love The Big Cheese & Pub. When I worked near there, we'd go for lunch often. I never had anything I didn't like there. The staff is nice and they know how to serve efficiently. They understand their lunch crowd doesn't have all day. In fact, I have to revisit it.

We were a party of 11 seated in the pub section for lunch and since no one else was there (we had 3 toddlers & an infant) it was actually perfect. We weren't there for white linens & trendy decor; it was about the pizza!!! We ordered the 3 cheese pizza, the vegetarian & the meditteranean, a tossed salad, and a few calzones. All were quite tasty!!! I'd come back for the 3 cheese any time. Ok, the interior is dark, dated & maybe not sparkling clean. But the service... Our waitress - Christine - was incredible! Friendly, funny, accommodating, efficient... she put up with our messy kids (& some messy adults) and made sure everyone had what they needed and were having a good time. I brought in a cake for my siblings who were celebrating birthdays but forgot a candle. She managed to have one for me and helped me light the cake & sing. Management should know what a gem that have in her service & personailty! We'll be back.

Been here a few times on lunch break when I worked in the area. It's dark in there and I don't think they have remodeled since at least the 80's. But, the food is decent. Calzones are good sized, and so are the pasta dishes. Good place to grab a bite if you are from around the block but, it won't be a destination restaurant for me.

I just moved to Cranston 3 months ago and have been trying a new pizza place every Friday hoping to find THE ONE, I am happy to report my search is over! This place has my idea of the perfect pizza. Not swimming in sauce, great amount of cheese, the crust isn't too thick or too thin and a fair amount of toppings. I can attest to the rest of the reviews when they say they have fantastic meatballs. I can't wait to explore the rest of the menu. I did take 1 star away due to the lady who cashed me out. She was more interested in talking to the guy in front of me that had already cashed out then even acknowledging my presence, the girl in the kitchen that was making the pizzas actually asked if she could help me. Definitely not something that would deter me from going back though.

Great place!! The kid and I were looking for somewhere to grab lunch and saw this place. I was concerned because it had the word "pub" and didn't know if it was kid friendly. Of course I looked up on yelp and checked out the info on it. So we headed in and were greeted instantly. Looked over the menu and was tempted to try the meatball sandwich but was a little afraid that it would be to much for me to eat. So I went for the Italian, LOVED IT! You have a choice to put in a calzone or torpedo bread. I chose torpedo, toasted. Wonderfully put together with provolone cheese, sweet peppers, tomatoes, lettuce and an amazing seasoning to bring it all together. I still only ate half, but saved the other half to bring home. I ordered the same for my husband to go, to bring him back the goodness I had experienced in a hot sandwich. Reaction from hubby- eyes wide open with "damn that's good"! We will be going back to try all the other delicious looking items such as pastas and pizzas. What I am REALLY curious to try is the Stuff Greek Popeye....

I go to Big Cheese about once every 3-4 weeks and I can say that everything on the menu is excellent and I've tried something from every category - pizza, pasta, salads, calzones. Go to Big Cheese and you can't go wrong!

Best calzones I have ever had! Not only are they huge but they are not expensive either. They have a really good house dressing for their salads too if you are not interested in the pizza or calzones. They have so many different kinds of calzones to get that it is hard to decide which one you want. I have been to this restaurant several times and will be back for more.

The best pizza restaurant in the city, and one of the best in the state. The homemade salad dressing is ridiculous and guaranteed you will be addicted. The chicken parm is phenomenal, it's baked not fried and their sauce is delicious.

Big Cheese rules!!!! I would eat here every single day if that weren't ridiculous. Salad dressing is the best. I've loved everything I've ever ordered here. Staff is great. Get the mudslide! They bring you two! Big Cheese FTW!!!

I have always held a special place in my heart for this restaurant. I really love that their food is authentic and as close to homemade as possible. They're recipes are consistent which is very important to me. I hate going to a restaurant and ordering the meal that you always order and come to find out that it is a completely different meal that the last time... well that doesn't happen here. It is always the same. My favorite thing is the pizza. Most people would argue that what makes a good pizza is a good crust. Although they do not have my favorite crust it's the toppings that I really love. Typically I get the real sausage, pepperoni and fresh ricotta cheese. IT IS AMAZING! Salads are basic but its how they dress them that I like. You can tell that it is done with care. Hand made all the way great prices knowledgeable staff. Try it you'll love it.

Another positive review for The Big Cheese. The food is fresh and delicious, the people working there are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the atmosphere is about as good as it gets in the neighborhood. Like the others, I'm a big fan of the Greek salad. The salad dressing is as good as everyone says. I also love the Mediterranean pizza, though I prefer mine with red sauce, and they seem happy to make it that way for me.

I mean, this is Rhode Island. There are many great places to get a good Pizza... but to me, Big Cheese is a great stop. My mom and aunts worked there growing up when it was under a different owner, so we have been getting pizza from take out or dine in for yearrrrrs. There calzones are super, the dough is delicious and they are big enough to share. The salads are simple, but dressing is super tasty. I highly recommend it for anyone in the area!

Best salad dressing ever... The tuna is something I dream about... Literally the only thing I ever order... The salad is simple and always fresh. Love this place!!!

What can I say? I work at a nearby Italian restaurant that serves pizza- but I prefer to starve until my shift ends, stop at the Big Cheese on my way home, and enjoy a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a nice cheese pizza. I am pretty discerning when it comes to my pie- and I will easily say Big Cheese is hands-down the best in RI! The dining room is no 'frills... classic wooden booths, some faded old art posters, and a fish tank... but don't worry, you'll be focused on the perfectly seasoned pizza sauce and crispy crust. If you are really hungry, I recommend starting with the garlicky bread sticks... but don't forget to pop a breath mint before you lean over the table for a kiss! This is one of those places "the locals" go. From what I understand it has been here for years on end and seems to outlast all it's competition. If you've ever been to Cranston, you know there's a pizza spot on every other corner. The Big Cheese wears it's title well.

Greek salad, "lights out" says Dave G So, I've been eating from this place since I was a kid... so this is going to be EXTREMELY biased. I remember... the one night every MONTH that my Mom wouldn't "feel like" cooking dinner.... it was always BIG CHEESE night. Large cheese and pepperoni Spinach calzone (black olives and cheese) Large greek salad. EVERY TIME The greek salad *dressing* hasn't changed one bit. (Though i was disappointed that the cucumbers weren't cut on a long diagonal like i remembered) Eveyrthing else is great now as it always was. Only recommendation I'd make is if you like it crispy... ask for it!

Dear Big Cheese, You know how much I love you. We have been in this committed relationship for decades, and you are still as good to me as you were when we first began our love affair. I really like this place. Chicken soup is SOOO good. Calzones are huge and delicious. Ambiance is kind of similar to Uncle Tony's in East Providence... but the food is better.

I ordered for pick up, so my review won't be as detailed or carry any true weight... or does it?! Not the best and not the worst calzone I've tried, simply decent. I order the calzone number 14, a spinach, sausage, chopped tomato, feta and provolone cheese calzone for $6.85. This Italian "stocking" was bake to perfection as the outer layer was nice and crispy yet deliciously soft inside. The sausage was a bit undercooked and it was dripping of grease. I was thinking about the gym versus the flavor. hmmm.. The service was standard, friendly and prompt. This meal filled me up, thus I am a happy customer. Sadly I am not entice to return tomorrow, but maybe the next time I want to get lunch outside the typical lunch variety...

One of the best pizzas in Cranston RI. The pizza is smothered with cheese, my only complaint is it hard to stop eating! I have never had any of their other menu items because when I go there I dont want anything else but the pizza. Four stars because they do not deliver.

Friendly family style restaurant. Up front is mostly take out with a few booths and in the back they have tables and a small bar. The sandwiches are all great. Try the calzones, they are huge, delicious are reasonably priced. Solid place.

Not the best food all-round, but their Greek Popeyes are FANTASTIC!!!! They're basically a white (or whole wheat, which is better) dough spinach pie with a Greek salad on the side that you stuff into the spinach pie. So you get this warm and cold thing which seems to be redundant but tastes great!!! Need to try it.

My fiance and I are fans...the pizza, pasta, nachos but best of all, the service and chance to customize everything without issues..and it is very reasonable. I have been there with groups, too, and service and food quality did not suffer.

I ate in here and its okay. Very good selection of Calzone... although I would like to see a menu item for Pesto Chicken which is my favorite calzone. I order out here for pizza and it's hands down the best pie in Rhode Island. Get Italian style and you can't go wrong!

My wife has been trying to get me to try this place for the past 4 years and I have refused to go. Well we finally made it there and it was pretty good. I really like the atmosphere of our seat - right next to the bar but still in our own little corner. The pizza was not very good but i think i ordered the wrong kind - i should have gotten the thin crust - my fault but i always like trying the original on my first attempt at a place. I also had the chix parm sandwhich and that was ok. Usually I like to go with really safe dishes for my first try so if its horrible I am not in a total crappy mood. Overall I will go back to try more of thier offerings.

Just went to Big Cheese recently, hadn't been in 20 years, the taste of their pizza hasn't changed, it's as tasty as I remember. Quality food at moderate prices, worth a visit.

I have been going here with my grandparents since childhood. Their pizza and their salads are like no other and I love them so much. If you're ever in the area and looking for some quality Italian in a nice casual atmosphere, go here. Do it!

  • Geoffrey B.

Oh the sauce, the sauce is so so good. You can taste the herbs and spices along with the little pieces of tomato. Served with everything that asks for a red sauce, you may want more. Their Chicken Parm actually is a chicken breast, not fried and covered with a breading. There is sufficient amount of cheese, no skimping here. The pizza is great, which is what made them famous. Good things are still a local secret. I hope I did not let the cat out of the bag, but the sauce is soooo good!

Not in the mood to cook. Order any sandwich stuffed in a calzone. Gotta love it. The Greek salad is Light's out! Get it, great feta, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, onion and olives....rock on!

This place is the real deal. We have been going there for years and it never lets you down. The salad with home made dressing is out of this world. And get the garlic bread sticks to go with it. Calzones, full meals, thin crust pizza, never had a bad meal. Service is always great and the help has been there for years. That tells you something! Do not confuse this with the Wine and Cheese in N.Providence. The Wine and Cheese is not even in the same ball park.

This is a great family-style restaurant. Food is consistently good. The staff at the take-out counter are always friendly. The wait staff in the restaurant are tried and true. The meatballs are my favorite. The calzones are great. Try the Popeye.

I was in RI and had to kill some time so we grabbed some food at the big cheese. Wow am I glad we did. Their Turkey Breast sandwich is by far one of the best Turkey Breast sandwiches I have ever have. Believe me I'm 41 and I've been around, so I've had my shared. I have to admit for a large sub though, it is a little pricey. But it's worth it.

Delicious pizza and delicious salad. Need I say more??? Who doesn't love a good pizza? You can dine in or eat out, I've done both. Dining in reminds me of what pizza parlor's were like when I was a kid. I love that they've kept it simple and focused on putting out good food.

Ok. So. I absolutely love The Big Cheese. I am a Sicilian man and I am VERY picky with Italian food. I am a huge judge of red sauce and pizza. THE PIZZA IS AMONG THE BEST IN RHODE ISLAND! Better than Caserta. Yes, I said better than Caserta. It is crisp and loaded with cheese, sauce and top notch ingredients. The flavor is INSANE! The salad dressing is so good you want to order a glass of it to drink and a pint to bounce. I have had several dishes there, all really authentic Italian flavors. This is QUALITY food. The place is cute, really "funny" - extremely cozy. It's like you're sitting in a place out of Goodfellas. Very 70's. Right up my alley for sure! When you do something right, there is no reason to change it. The restaurant is also very clean and the wait staff are consistently pleasant. Go, enjoy and thank me when you have been wow'd!!

Very cool old school style Greek pizza joint. I love the atmosphere of this place. I really want to eat in there. I just tried take out there for the first time this afternoon. I got the Popeye Spinach Pie type thingy. Basically it's a Greek salad, and a spinach pie. Which is really just a 10 inch calzone. All for 10 bucks. Very decent salad, and very decent pie. Quite a large meal for the money IMHO. I would order again. They included two dressings without me asking. That's huge bonus points right there. This place, and other older Greek owned places are my favorite pizza places by far. Greek food is very underrated. They really know how to jazz up their food to make it both delicious, and quite unique also. This place is what I would call a true pizza parlor. And they have a nice bar in the back. Its not huge, but instead very cozy looking. I could definitely see myself enjoying a few beers there. In fact if it was within walking distance it would get lots of my hard earned cash. ;) So that all being said I highly recommend that you check this place out. And don't let the bar stop you from bring the kiddies. It seems very family friendly, and in fact there was a young girl there with her sister, and Mom (I assume it was the situation anyway). She by the way was truly adorable, and was having a great time. I'm sure if you go there, you'll have a great time also. Happy Yelping Y'all. :)

We've had Big Cheese pizza before but we've never eaten at the restaurant. We changed that the other night when we stopped in for a late dinner after one of the boy's baseball games. Despite the late hour it was still really busy. We were seated quickly at a table for 6. After a long, hot game we were ready for beers and sodas. The service was extremely friendly and a little slow. The adults ordered 2 large pizzas and the kids got a mini pizza and a side of chicken parm for my son. The chicken parm was unusual in that the chicken wasn't breaded but he liked it anyway. The pizza was delicious as expected. We liked the fact that you can choose your crust - 5 choices - as well as your toppings. We'd had the pizza before so we knew it'd be good. As I said the service was slow and by the time we got our pizzas one of them was cold. It was good but cold so we asked our server if it could go back in the oven. She took care of it and when she brought it back she let us know she'd taken it off the bill. We were pleasantly surprised because we'd already eaten a couple slices - couldn't help ourselves - and we had no complaint about the taste. It was the perfect after game dinner - good food and great service. We'll be back!

This place was great! I had been here maybe once in my life, until just recently. Wanting to try something we haven't been, we just stopped in. Both times we have been here since the food had been really good. It's a basic menu, I wouldn't call it upscale by any means, but the food they make is made well and fresh. I'm a big Greek salad lover and theirs is awesome, and awesomely large! I've noticed all portions are pretty large. And don't leave without getting the mozzarella bread. You can get just that and fall in love.

Oh That Salad Dressing I've lived in the area for over 30 and never tried this spot. I missed out. The Cheese is a wonderful old pizza joint with a bar. Pros: Old School Atmosphere Quality Food Bar Plenty of Parking Cons: Short on bar seats The order: Large Garden Salad Pepperoni and Olive Pizza Well Done Side Order of Chicken Parmigiana All of the item are top quality and the pizza was cooked perfectly. The standout here is the famed salad dressing. It maybe the best dressing I have ever had, kind of a take on a Greek dressing but better. Overall: Great place to grab a pizza and a beer. The bartender and servers are very friendly and inviting. Don't forget to grab a salad with that house dressing. If you like an old school pizza shop that your folks used to frequent then you'll like The Big Cheese. Thanks

The good: Nice servers. No errors with our order. The bad: Dated decor. Mediocre food. Super tight / uncomfortable booths with stiff, straight backs. Young daughter had chicken soup, which had LITERALLY NOT A SINGLE BITE OF CHICKEN. Policy of automatically applying 18% gratuity to a party of 4?? Unfortunately, this experience was underwhelming and the meal unsatisfying. We won't be returning.

honestly the customer service here was amazing I love when you go somewhere and people treat you like they are happy you came and that is exactly how the staff here was. I truly feel like that is what is lacking from a lot of my dining experiences but this place is wonderful. also the pizza was amazing the salad was great my only complaint is that there chicken parm sandwich isn't breaded its grilled and i didn't know that before ordering but the staff was great about taking it back. I will def come back!

My rating is based on two small pizzas my wife and I ordered. The rating takes a hit when it came to service, seating and overall feel in the restaurant. My wife ordered a small Pepperoni and I a small Bacon. The pizzas are really good. Thick and crispy! Not too saucy or too cheesy. I have no complaints on the food. The things that could have bumped this rating up were the service, seating and restaurant environment. Our server was very nice, but just not the most attentive. I went in planning on having two beers but only had one because by the time I could have gotten the second my food would have been finished. The seating is HORRIBLE. The booths are old, tight and uncomfortable. We also were seated next to a door that opened up every 45 seconds which is obviously uncomfortable. Lastly I feel this place could just change up its decor a bit to liven the place up and make it fresh. It has a old charm feel to it and that's fine, but you can have the feel without things actually being old. I would definitely eat here again, however I would just pick up and eat at home.

This is a RI favorite, and it's no surprise. Inside, the decor is so perfectly old school, but not neglected or dirty in the least. We had amazing service from our server, but also every other server that walked by! The girl even called her manager on the phone to find out if she could take my coupon. She didn't want to just assume she couldn't and turn me away. You can tell these folks care about their jobs and about each other. It was great to see. Now for the food -- we ordered BBQ chicken, Buffalo chicken, and meatball/ricotta pizzas. The thin and crispy crust is where it's at. Everything tasted super fresh. I wish I had realized that the "chopped spinach" was frozen, not fresh. That's my mistake. It took away from the glory that is the meatball/ricotta pie. It would be great if the chopped spinach were seasoned with garlic or even just a little salt and pepper. The chicken on the other two pizzas are not breaded, which was exactly what I like. It tasted like it had been marinated and very well cooked -- tender and so flavorful. It had been a long while since I had visited this place, and I'm glad I came back. Of course, I took home a container of their famous house made dressing. So worth a try!

My first visit was this evening. .... Christina, you're a champ. I hope to see you soon at Dante's Kitchen... art the end of a long day, thus place was a golden star option... sat at the bar with good company, nice, nice. I am a chef. Pizza is my favorite thing to eat. This pizza Is SOLID. I got mine well-done, which is the way I get it upon every first visit to a new place, just in case... I like a crispy crust and those little brown love-dots of partially charred cheese... both expectations were met with a smile on my face... I recommend. Notes : I sat at the bar; I have not explored the menu...... 4 stars until I delve in more.

If the food was bad too, I would of given 1 star but it actually wasn't too bad for a small italian place. I liked my spaghetti and meatballs. My bf got the chicken parm the way I like it as well with fresh grilled chicken, gooey melted cheese and sauce. The problem was where it took over 20 minutes for a soda and water to come out. Finally it arrived and she apologized. Our waitress was very nice btw! I guess it was just really busy but still.....so our meals came with bread and salad and that never came out ! We were wondering and waiting for it but it never came. Then the food comes out from a different waitress and I mention that we never got our salad n bread. She seemed confused and then our waitress quickly pops up with it and apologizes again. She asked if we wanted to bring our food back to keep it heated and warm and I said yes. The salad was ok, I've definitely had better. The bread was really good though. Finally we finished then our entrees were brought out. Overall a bad experience but the food sorta made up for it, I don't know if I'll be back....

Got a salami and sausage thin pizza (wheat crust). It was nice and crisp, tasty cheese and toppings, but very very very greasy. Maybe it's because of the two deli meats but I have had that combination before at other venues and they had not been that greasy. My stomach kind of felt the rush of greasy and did not like it... :-( I don't know if this is a "to go back" place for me...I am still partial to other pizza restaurants in the area.

I'll start this review by saying that I think the pizza deserves 4 stars, but this review isn't about the pizza, it's about my overpriced veal parm sandwich made with old meat. If you look on any on-line menu the price of the veal parm sandwich is about $9. When I went to pay the bill was over $30 which was a bit more than I thought it would be since we didn't get that much food. I paid, asked for an itemized receipt, and left. It ended up being a $15 sandwich. Fine. It's veal. I didn't expect there to be such a huge price point though. All other sandwiches were under 9 for a large. I would have been fine with this, and just not ordered it again unless it was an amazing veal parm, but when I went to eat it, I could tell that the veal was old. It was tough, chewy, and had the flavour of living on the edge. The kind of taste that you do not want to taste when you are eating meat. I worked in kitchens for 10 years, and the rule always was, "Don't serve anything you wouldn't eat yourself." I find it hard to believe anyone at the Big Cheese would have eaten this veal. Stick to the pizza.

I like eating at the big cheese because the staff is friendly, outgoing and inviting. The food is delicious. I love the salad dressing and the marinara sauce. The portions of the food are huge for the price. I'm a regular customer and will continue to eat here.

I come to Big Cheese at least once a month, mostly for take-out. Their pizza and calzone options are out of this world; really what I'm looking for when I'm in the mood for a filling pizza. In addition, they have great salads if I need something a little lighter!

So I am a little disappointed I did not hit this place sooner. It is old school RI on the inside. It has the vibe of a 1950 - 1960 upscale eatery, but the name would obviously not give that impression. So a couple of things, the meatballs are amazing. Some of the best I have had in RI, which translates to just about anywhere. The marinara is good enough to eat with a spoon. The portions are huge, you will not go hungry. So, what did we eat specifically? Well there was their version of the wimpy skimpy that was a bit too heavy on the spinach side for my liking, but the wife loves it. The Pizza (the house special) was great. Live the crust. The daughter had some sort of salad. Sorry I can not be more descriptive then to say it had chicken in it, but she really liked it. The apps were really good as well. Garlic bread of course, with tones of cheeses. Service was great and the prices were extremely reasonable. So bottom line, if you have seen it and wondered...just pull the trigger at least once.

Great food, but too bad they have racist ppl working there! Went to pick up my order today and one of the girls behind the counter was bashing Obama, which is not a the issue in itself because everyone is entitled to their opinion, however she proceeded to treat me like I was invisible and greeted the customer who walk in behind me! Very disappointing! The food is so good but I'll have to say that I will never return, and will let all of my co-workers who frequent there know as well.

The salad dressing absolutely is amazing. But who decided to put it in a CUP? cmon now. You know people are taking it to go. Buy salad dressing bottles or other tight fitting containers. I get home to a bag covered in dressing. It also leaked in my car. If you are in the car alone it is going to be difficult to transport, even when trying to keep it secured. When you are charging over $5, you can put it in a bottle. It took me 30 seconds online to find cheap wholesale salad dressing bottles

By far the best salad dressing if ever had. There always extremely busy which can only mean one thing that there food is amazing. Calzones are to die for. Extremely nice staff I've never come across any one rude there. They go out of there way to make u feel wanted.

Actually, this was our second visit. First visit, for lunch, the wife and I ordered the sauteed mushrooms which I thought was good (served over garlic bread) but wife wasn't impressed. She thought they were salty and dry. Then we ordered the tossed salad which was a good portion (almost entirely iceberg lettuce though - c'mon!) but I have to agree with the other reviewers that the house dressing was spot on. We left with the wife unimpressed. Today, heading toward Whole Foods in Garden City and in need of something in our bellies, I convinced the wife that for the sake of convenience to give the Big Cheese another shot. We got the tossed salad. Good like last time. We split a calzone which was pretty good also. Overall, I think the food is a good value. Decent food, decent portions. decent prices. Then when I eye-balled the bill my Narragansett drafts were $4.25 apiece! I asked the bartender if this was a mistake an she said that that is what they are charging. Bottom line: when I go to a pizza joint, which this essentially place is, I like to enjoy a beer with my meal. Lots of pizza joints out there. Won't go back.

I have loved this place for years and now they're finally open Monday's! I get a spinach pie, tossed salad and eggplant parm EVERY time I come here. All three are to die for. The insatiable cravings the food gives me keeps me coming back, year after year. The food is always consistent. You're making a mistake by not bringing some of their homemade salad dressing home with you! Yes, you can buy the stuff. You can even bring your own container, which I recommend so you don't get oil all over your car. I've come here with people who 'don't eat salad' and the dressing changes their mind every single time!

  • A. F.

Another visit with excellent service and food! Not really much more to be said. We came at a time when the place wasn't too busy during the middle of the day. We ordered the nachos appetizer that came with meatballs, melted cheese, olives and banana peppers on top. It also came with marinara and sour cream on the side. These were so good, some of the best nachos ever! We also got side orders of eggplant and veal parmesan. These came with hearty Italian bread, and both were very good, as were the drinks we ordered. I would easily go back!

I love the Big Cheese. I grew up going here with the family, and now I make the trip back as often as I can for two reasons: the homemade Italian house dressing, and the homemade sausage. The dressing has been beyond awesome for as long as I've been able to eat salad, I only WISH they would bottle it! I could get it by the case! Can you imagine? In addition, the pizza and pasta dishes are awesome and they always make the meatballs and sausage from scratch. True RI Italian fare. Not to be missed!

  • Pam R.

This is an RI staple for sure, well at least for me it is. One of the places I can't leave RI without visiting! Did you hear about the Greek salad? The dressing! Goodness. You know I always have to buy some before heading out. The fact that they sell it in a cup does bother me a little. They should do something about it. As far as the pizza the three cheese pizza is my favorite one. I miss it already!

  • Mike P.

I like it. I really like it. But I don't love it. The food there is good, and plentiful. It just feels like it needs a little kick. I had the Italian flavor pizza and it didn't have the spicy flavor it advertises. The eggplant parm, the ravioli were plentiful and tasted good. In a way, it reminds me of Marchetti's. Not the best, but solid. Hopefully they put more staff on, the server seemed like they had too many tables in their area.

Best Italian restaurant in town. I have been there a countless amount of times and have always received the best customer service. The cook Tony never fails to asks me how the food was. The food is great and it's a very clean place I would definitely recommend it to anyone!!

We discovered this hidden gem about a year before we moved out of state and it is always at the top of the list for must-visit when we come back to visit our family. Never had a bad meal, calzones are a great deal and the cheesey bread is phenomenal. You must eat here!

I've been coming to the Big Cheese & pub for years. I can't say I can really review a dining in experience since the last time I've dined in here I was 15. I do plan on sitting down sometime for a meal sometime soon. The food here has never disappointed me though. Nor has the polite friendly service. My friends and I swear by their house made greek dressing. It's by far the best I have ever had. My mother always gets the calzone and I either get the tuna sub or their italian grinder. The portions are HUGE and great quality. The bread always tastes very fresh. Their tuna salad is my favorite in the area and the they certainly don't skimp you on toppings on the italian. And for the price? You cannot go wrong.

One of the best eggplant parms I've ever tasted - and house-made salad dressing is amazing. Why do pizza places always have the best dressing? One of the great mysteries of life. But they put that dressing on the pizza, too...which gets a little overpowering. Order a greek salad and a certain pizza? Same dressing two ways. Abusing a delicious condiment deducts you one star.

  • Dave L.

Best calzones anywhere! The Big Cheese is a good place for a variety of dishes, although I'm not a big fan of their pizza. What I do get, almost every time I go there, is a sausage and peppers calzone, with the wheat crust. You must get the wheat crust, as it is truly delicious. Their sausage, which is from a local Rhode Island sausage company, is some of the tastiest you'll ever enjoy. It's mild, not spicy, and has a very fine texture. It is not coarse and chewy, but rather almost melts in your mouth. The tomato sauce is one of the better restaurant sauces I've had - not too salty, tastes of tomato, not oregano. Also, one of the best things they have is their garden salad with the house dressing. People sometimes buy sides of dressing to take home. It's that good! Lastly, the other dish I get, when it's not the calzone, is cheese ravioli with sausage. You get a plate full of wonderful cheese ravioli in that excellent tomato sauce, and of course those amazing sausages. Just writing this review has me craving their food now!
