Tavern in our go to place but I decided to change it up for my grandmothers 80th birthday since we are at the Tavern weekly (yes its that good)!!! The place I decided to try called Blackie's ended up saying they never wrote down our reservations so we were stuck with 9 people at 8pm with no food! My husband called Tavern last minute and explained the situation. Even though it was busy they said we will make it work. We drove right there and now it was 8:30! The waitress was awesome because she put 4 tables together and made the night turn from awful to amazing. We all ate and drank like kings and my grandmother had a smile from ear to ear. Thank you again to the staff at the Tavern for making granny's 80th amazing!

We went last night for dinner! Food was delicious! I had grilled tuna & my husband had baked fish. We started with calamari. Service was excellent! I highly recommend you make reservations! They're busy!

An old building which is cool to check out. the bar was full so we sat along the wall behind the bar. The bartender with curly hair was very friendly, accommodating and hard at work. the menu had a lot of nice choices but we did not end up eating. the dining room and bar area were busy so their doing something right! I thought there were a few things that needed updating. and I did hear two different people comment about their food that they weren't completely happy with it. one guy the bartender was saying "why aren't you eating, why didn't you tell me, I would have sent it back" and another lady was choking stating this chicken is sooooo dry. they had keno, a few drafts, a tv, and a full liquor license.

The ambiance is definitely old, historic feel. Original wood floors, low ceilings, heavy wooden tables. I have been there on occasion where they have a giant kettle of hot soup (you can get it by purchasing an entree'), and warm rolls. They have a few butters to choose from, all that are delicious. Food portions are great, and the price is on point. Just recently read an article about the resturant being haunted, and they do ghost dinners in October (if that's your kind of thing). The King's Table is the most requested table to sit at, and also where the most paranormal activity has taken place! Go see it for yourself!

I was recently introduced to Tavern on the Main not too long ago when I went with family for our monthly get together dinner. I have gone there twice now and am not too excited. I was intrigued by the old time decor and low ceilings, making it really feel old-timey and colonial like Publick House in Sturbridge. The food was good and was served in giant portions, but is a little on the expensive side, especially for such a busy and townie restaurant. I always feel full when I leave and am happy with the meal. The downside is that the prices are high, there is little parking, it gets really loud during dinner with the amount of people, it's a super small dining room, and there aren't that many choices to choose from. Other than that, the Tavern is a great place for a comfortable, but fancy dinner out with the family.

The food at Tavern on Main is tasteful, but their customer service is not. Recently my family ordered food-to-go and we were provided with the wrong order. After returning all the way home to a phone call notifying us of the fact, my mother returned to the restaurant to get our correct order. Despite the fact that the incorrect order had come home with us, Tavern on Main actually wanted it back. Having a close friend who is a chef has definitely provided me with an array of frightening restaurant stories, and I have always been warned of restaurants re-selling food. My mother explained that she didn't plan on returning it because it's illegal to re-sell it, the waitress was rude to her and explained that she would now have to pay for her order out of pocket. Now, I've waited before, and unfortunately I have ended up at establishments that will dock an employees pay for an honest mistake. My feelings on this have always been that a restaurant that holds so little value or concern for it's employees can only hold about the same level of concern for their customers. This is clearly illustrated by the treatment my family received from the staff members at the Tavern, who are obviously so on-edge about the punishment they may endure that they find it completely appropriate to actually degrade a customer. In fact, they told my mother that they were going to file CHARGES against her for the food that they made the mistake of giving her. After all of the effort and unpleasantness with Tavern, my mother returned the day-old food with a note to the owner and a check to cover the cost of the order they mistakenly gave us. We haven't heard back from the owner yet, but sadly Tavern DID accept back day-old food. I can honestly say that I will never do business with this company again and will tell my friends to do the same.

Was called the Stagecoach Tavern. Now called the Tavern on Main. Set in a historic 200 year old building. Bar on one side restaurant on the other. Soup and bread with homemade Flavored whipped butter is available for you to help yourself on an old cast iron stove. Food was very good, the young waitress was EXCELLENT, anticipating our needs yet not hovering. Informal dress. The place is evidently haunted although no problems occurred when we were there. Reason prices very good food, extensive menu. Had the veal oscar and a seafood dish (name escapes me).

There are few times when I'm asked where I want to eat and Tavern is not my first choice. Last night I had the stuffed squash blossoms which were FANTASTIC. The ONLY reason I did not get my usual maine mac and cheese is because tonight they have an upgraded seafood mac and cheese! You Must try the Persian muscles and lamb lollipops. This is also the ONLY restaurant that, when I was in the mood, made me.am .AMAZING,FLAVORFUL TENDER black and blue steak. Weather taking out, eating at the bar.or the dining room do not walk past, THE.FOOD.IS AMAZING!

Found this hidden gem of a restaurant about two years ago when a friend recommended one of his favorite place to eat in Rhode Island. A short drive out of the cities to Chepachet, will lead you to the Tavern on Main ( tavernonmainri.com ) . This is truly home made food, that is cooked to perfection. I have tried a variety of dishes over the last two years, some I love and a few that weren't for me. The best aspect of the Tavern on Main is their never failing soup bar. They have a homemade soup and bread bar that has never disappointed. They serve soups such as Italian Wedding, Baked Potato, Classic Chicken Noodle, and many many more. The meals are always served promptly and to perfection. For seafood lovers, the Seafood Alfredo was even appealing to myself, a non seafood person! It was tossed and topped with a thick creamy Alfredo sauce and filled with a variety of seafood - and ALOT of it!! Typically my favorite meal is Chicken Marsala, however the way it is served with a large slice of real mozzarella cheese topping the thin piece of chicken does not appeal to me. I can tell you, my favorite dish is the Steak Tips topped with Parmesan Cheese. The filled Meatballs were ordered as an appetizer but could easily have been ordered as a meal with a side of pasta. The appetizer came with two baseball sized filled meatballs, topped with a pink vodka sauce. This was a mouthwatering duo. After trying many different meals and appetizers at Tavern on Main, you really can't go wrong. From seafood to steak the meals are home made with love from this unique restaurant. If the food isn't enough to draw you in, the unique and haunting history behind the Tavern may just do it. There are many different stories that go around regarding the haunting of the Tavern on Main and the wait staff always has a new story to share if asked. The restaurant frequently host Paranormal Dinners and Investigations hisandhersreviewspot.tum…

This place is a total home run especially since it's only about a 20 minute drive through the back roads from Douglas. My wife and I came here for lunch and were absolutely blown away with the ambiance and the service, we enjoyed almost the entire dining area to ourselves which was a nice way to start the afternoon. The onion soup was to die for especially since it was made with five different varieties of onion which you could taste. We also shared an order of the zucchini flowers which were unlike any others that I've had before. Lastly we each had one of the signature burgers which again, completely exceeded expectations. We will definitely be back soon especially given how close it is the the Purple Cat winery. Enjoy!

Tavern on Main is a great little nugget of comfort food. The decor is rustic and original, and they offer a buffet of warm bread, popovers, homemade infused butters, and soup before your meal is served. My kids LOVE that! The portions are hearty, and you really can't go wrong. I've never had a bad meal here. I like to make this my winter spot, since the food can be rich and you will tend to overeat.

I have been here twice. I went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my toddler son and mother in law. We waited for 10 minutes before being acknowledged. There were only 2 tables eating. The waitress finally came out from the back and we got seated. I ordered the scallop salad and it was absolutely delicious. From the perfectly cooked bay scallops to the delicious cracker breading, I was just in love with this dish. They also offer a free soup and bread table that I didn't take advantage of, but it was there and it was being used by the other customers. The waitress was very friendly but took a little longer than I would have liked. Luckily it was empty in the restaurant and my son could run around while we waited for our check. This wouldn't have worked if it were busier. I also came here with my best friend and husband on a Saturday night. We called ahead and got reservations and I'm glad that we did. Even with the reservations, we arrived at 5:40pm for a 6:00pm reservation and wasn't seated until after 6:30pm. That was a bit frustrating but I felt it was worth the wait. We ordered lamb pops for an appetizer and the mozzarella sticks. Both were delicious. Our entrees were great, and we ordered some seasonal drinks which were very tasty. My complaint is the timing. It took us forever to get our food and even longer to get our check. We watched our waitress having an at length conversation with a customer who she knew outside of the restaurant while we sat waiting for our checks, our left over food already packed in containers to go. She then came by us, walked past our table twice and then said "I thought I left your check already" and tried to rush off but my husband had his card ready to give her so she couldn't leave us there forever again with the check. I understand this place gets busy on the weekends but that's no excuse for the service to be slowed down because the waitress wants to have lengthy conversations while others are waiting to be served. I would give this a 2 star rating but the food is so incredible and priced right that I just can't, no matter how terrible the service is. My tip: Go for lunch or during the week. The seafood is very delicious but so is everything else I have tried.

The ambiance is lovely....the decor is very homey. The food is generally very good. We had Derek's seafood platter tonight and it was fantastic with the exception of overcooked clams however the cook made a fresh batch right away and all was well again. :-) The only dish that I was not a fan of in the past was the stuffed shrimp. The cracker stuffing tasted like nothing but grease laden ritz crackers. Love, love, love the red pepper whipped butter and fresh bread. The cream of spinach soup was delicious. We love this place so much that we have decided to have our wedding reception there in the spring.

Excellent steaks and seafood. Many special under $20. Gotta try surf and turf!

GROSS! went in for a baked stuffed lobster special...took one bite, tasted ammonia, paid and left. have since learned that if seafood tastes like ammonia it means it's spoiled. Nice, eh? No thanks!

Not really impressed. We came here because my mom loves it and it was her birthday. We were a party of six which really isn't that big of a party but our server didn't seem pleased that he was sat with a six too of mostly older people. Parking is a nightmare as there is no lot, just street. You also can take a risk and park at the Family Dollar next door that has signs everywhere that you can only park if shopping there. Meals are a little pricey seeing that the servers are pimple faced and immature. The girls are walking around with yoga pants and t shirts. I really don't want to see your panty lines, thanks. Our teenage looking server have my parents attitude when they asked if bread, salad, and soup with our entrees because we couldn't see it anywhere on the menu. Sorry for asking because my parents were curious. Jeeze. He also wasn't really prompt, and rarely checked in with us. Like I said before, it was like he was mad he was getting a six top even though he was guaranteed an 18% tip. The busser was a sweetheart and I hope she gets tipped well. Very attentive, unlike our server, who would always go back to the servers little section and chat instead of taking care of tables. The menu stated they could make almost anything gluten free which intrigued me, but as my server already was jerky I didn't bother asking him, it just wasn't worth it. Also, a family member can't really get up and down stairs and he had a rough time getting in the door--less steep stairs would be nice or a ramp. There are two sets of stairs so you would still have the tavern charm on the main stairs. I don't see why they couldn't adapt one set of stairs to be more accessible. This is an old building (over 250 years old) and it shows some great charm but the floors are really uneven and you really can't move around the restaurant. The floor layout is to fit as many people as possible and it's really awkward to move around to get to the soup and bread bar or bathroom. It's very loud in the dining room, along with the music which wasn't necessary. The bathroom was tiny in that if you opened your stall door you'd hit the person washing their hands and was grimy. Surprisingly the bar side of the tavern was quiet. If I was on a date I'd go to that side of the tavern. The Italian wedding soup was home made and delicious, along with apple butter for the bread! The salad was a great size and the HONEY vinaigrette dressing (that the server insisted was balsamic, lol) was to die for. I wasn't so impressed with the entree I ordered--pasta with pink vodka sauce. The sauce was really watery and didn't have much flavor. I also ordered the fried stuffed meatballs with my pasta, expecting some oozy yummy mozzarella. I was extremely disappointed. It seems like when they made the meatballs (which had more of a sausage texture, very little bread crumbs) they just added mozzarella to the mix before rolling them together so you couldn't really taste it. They weren't really fried (crispy as one would expect) but only pan fried, which is nothing special as many people pan fry their meatballs before putting them in sauce anyways. The pink vodka sauce on them was thick and what I was expecting on the pasta. Bummer that that sauce wasn't on the pasta. My father got a steak and I had a bite. Delicious, wish I got it myself. In fact, the steak is what gave this a three star instead of a two. Interestingly enough, all of the check was done by hand, no POS system. Surprised that the order came out right, but you'd think that a place with prices like these would be a little more in the new age. I probably won't come in as a regular but if I'm in the area I will probably stop in. A little pricey for the atmosphere, but your milage may vary.

This place used to be called The Stagecoach Tavern, and they have kept the sign outside which is cool. The inside is VERY old, which is part of its charm, but also it's drawback. The floor is very crooked, but it feels really warm and cozy inside. I went with my husband for lunch because we were in town visiting family. They have a free soup station, with warm rolls and 3 different kinds of flavored butter. That was awesome! I got a Buffalo Chicken Salad, and it was good, no complaints but nothing earth shattering. My husband got a bacon burger and it was pretty delicious. If you are in the Gloucester area, I recommend going in. Our waitress was also super friendly, asking where we were from and what brought us in, and recommended we come back for dinner.

Great food but loud and crammed atmosphere.
(3)Tom S.
Let's start out with the freebies, they offer a free soup and custom made butters and bread bar that you help yourself to. Its dam good and we haven't even touched on the food yet!!! Ok, so keep in mind the place is haunted so be aware if you're timid. If the ghost is in the kitchen then he is a hell of a chef, everything I have ever tried here is delicious comfort food. The wait staff is proficient so give the place a chance and you'll love it!

My family went there for Thanksgiving dinner and it could have been a real challenge with an 89 yr old mother in law and two vegetarians. The staff sat us quickly and the service was fantastic, everything on time, hot food was hot, and salads were fresh. Our server, Debbie, was funny and so efficient -- water glasses were never empty. The kitchen made a special entree for the vegetarians and it was delicious. For that matter so was turkey dinner and shrimp scampi. The coffee was wonderful and desserts were perfect. If you are in the area, this is a comfy place with great service! Highly recommended.

The food here is amazing! The stuffed meatball appetizer could be a meal in itself, it was so delicious! The pumpkin chicken is one of my faves! Staff is always friendly, and the atmosphere is very cozy. We love coming here!

After a 24 mile drive from home to this neck of the woods, I was absolutely amazed. The service from our waitress Lisa was second to none and the food amazing. I had the prime rib, medium, and it was perfect. The décor is pleasing and simple. I found the whole experience pleasing and satisfying. Prices are reasonable for food, cocktails are a little pricey. I am booking reservations for next week when I complete this review.

this is a place I just love friendly staff great salad. usually one gets a salad with there meal and the salad is a joke...not this place seafood case role great.
(4)Jay S.
This place is hit or miss. Have visited at least 6 times and half the visits were really good. Th other half, not so good. Seafood dishes have not been satisfying. Recently had the pot roast and it was like homemade and very good. Atmosphere is quaint.

The Tavern on Main is the quintessential New England restaurant. It's not only housed in a building that's almost 300 years old, and it's the site of the historic Dorr Rebellion (go look it up), but the owners claim it is also haunted. The Tavern hosts ghost hunter dinners and has been featured in a number of shows and publications. Despite the overabundance of atmosphere, they seem to be struggling to find their identity. Do they offer culinary experiences or comfort food? Are they a tourist trap or a local gem? Are they expensive or a bargain? The menu, and food, seem to be equally confused. Most dinners come with a soup and bread bar which is hideous at best. However, many of the entrees are exceptional. We have eaten here many times and have had wonderful seafood and steaks on nearly every occasion. On our most recent visit, I enjoyed a large, fresh perfectly-cooked portion of New England cod. But the dinner special included a New England-style apple crisp which my wife liked, but I found boring and flavorless. Despite my criticisms, it is a fun place and I think this is a must-visit restaurant for everyone to try once. Make reservations and arrive early -- the small dining room fills up fast. And as far as value is concerned, they offer many specials, my favorite being the Sunday night menu where a couple can order bread, soup, salad, an entree, dessert, drinks and pay tax and include a tip, and yet still pay only around $40. Scary.

I drive by the Tavern on Main every day and I've always wanted to give it a try, so one day last week I finally decided to stop in. It was just before 8pm on a Wednesday night, so it was a relatively slow night. After perusing their menu (which had some delicious-sounding dishes) I was a bit thrown back by their prices. Chepachet is a small, quaint community, and the prices seemed more Big-City Down-Town. I wasn't concerned, however. After-all, this place could be amazing. I ordered a steak (medium-rare) which came with a side of vegetables and mashed potatoes. Fifteen minutes after ordering, my salad came out. Sixteen minutes after ordering, my steak came out (yes, the steak was delivered one minute after the salad). The steak, which was ordered medium-rare, can out medium-well. While that wasn't fatal, the poor quality of the beef was a major disappointment. For $25 I expect a better cut of beef than could be bought at Walmart for $3.99.

My husband and I love the Thursday night dinner for two. Best deal around. They have a great selection of appetizers and meals. Bread is always good. House dressing is awesome!
(5)Russ D.
Went on a Friday night recently -- wife and I had the prime rib. It was cooked perfectly (rare and med rare). Prompt friendly service while not being rushed. New, stylish and hip? NOPE, as other have said it's dated, but if you are looking for good food, reasonable prices and friendly service this is the place. Heard about it from a co-worker who lives in the area. Definitely worth the trip.
(4)Laura L.
My husband and I LOVE the tavern. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the food is to die for at super reasonable prices. The only downside is the consistently slow (but friendly) service, but it's worth it. Try the gourmet Mac n cheese! We went more frequently when we lives in the area, but still make the trip several times a year.
(4)Shannon J.
Perfect for a laid-back Friday night or a hearty dinner out with friends or family. The portions here are huge, and I really mean huge. I once ordered the king cut prime rib and laughed out loud when it was brought to the table; it looked like I had half the cow on my plate. I sometimes wonder how they can be profitable at their very reasonable prices. This isn't fancy food,. but the service is very friendly, the atmosphere is very old New England, they always have at least one great IPA on draught and I always enjoy my meal. I love that I can wait at the adjacent bar and have a drink if I can't get a table right away. Try the mussels Parisienne and any of their ravioli-based dishes and you will be glad you did.
(4)Jenny M.
I LOVE this place. It's not a fancy place, but its quaint and cozy. Its a very old building with some incredible history behind it. The place is haunted and I'm a firm believer! Sitting at a table I suddenly felt as though a strong individual went behind me and pushed my chair in while I sat on it. When I looked back, there was no one there! I really enjoy the spooky atmosphere! My FAVORITE dish is their Autumn chicken. Its seasonal, and in the fall, I'm there twice a week getting it while I can. I really recommend this place, you'll enjoy the home cooked meal taste and feel every time!

First, bring your appetite and WATCH THE FLOORS- This old Stagecoach stop was built ~er~um ~ - a long time ago...... there is a sign that warns about the twisted waitstaff and floors. The prices are great, the food is wonderful and the portions are HUGE. A glass of wine is a nice size- not a 2 ounce taste for $10.00 same with the mixed drinks and beers. There are always specials and on Thursdays they have a 2 for 35$ special- soup, salads, 2 appetizers, 2 (nice) entrees, 2 desserts coffee, and a half caraffe of wine.....beat that!!!!! Oh if you wanna go at peak hours, I would suggest a reservation! It can be loud, but hey this is a family resturant- On occasion, I will get things to go when I am dining solo at home. One of our favorite waitresses is Chelsea...her Father is the owner/ head chef. Once you get to know her, she will be busting yer yams and making fun of what you are drinking....at least my husband, anyway. Her father has some awesome seafood dinners on the menu- but if seafood is not your 'thang, He makes steaks, chicken. chops, tips, etc. My BIL loves when they have Bar-B-Q spare rib ravioli I love thier East meets West (Lobster and Crab) They have great Baked stuffed shrimp, pasta seafood , Seafood Al'iole (((spelling???)) I ((HATED )) their seafood bomb - untiil I asked for it witht he pink cream sauce. (personally love their pink cream sauce instead of the oil)) Crab cakes are wonderful as well as the Lobster stuffed scallops....yeah just you wait. The Mussels Parisian are delicious. They cannot be more accomodating. For the price, you CANNOT go anywhere else in the area and get the quality and selection- Don't get me wrong- this is not Cappriccio's but then again you won't go over your credit limit having dinner here, either! Try it out - Slainte (To your health) Kate
(4)Georgeanne Q.
A local spot that truly delivers! Recently 5 of my family members dined here--4 of which had Fresh steamed Lobster. They raved about it and would def re-order! I have also attend the Hauted Dinner--as they attempt to contact the resident ghosts--a very fun evening. great food--super staff-CHELSEA was wonderful!
(4)Skinclinic E.
Charming atmosphere. The food is not consistent though. The Mussels Parisienne can be to die for some nights and not so much others. The steaks are consistently good as is the Lobster Mac. Thursday nights Derek's Seafood platter was great for $18. The seafood bomb was not good. I love the Tavern Tenderloin. We go here quite a bit so we know which menu items we like...
