Absolutely delicious pizza steak. Normally I hate chopped steak but this made-to-order sandwich was spectacular. Perfect mixture of provolone cheese and fried onions in a tasty roll. It's no wonder it has the reputation of being the best in Chester County - it delivers on taste. Sat at the counter and ate. Nice people working there. The place has been here 35 years and it's comfy and clean. They certainly knock the cheese steak out of the park. Only reason I didn't go 5 stars is there's no wifi. Come on man. That's a must in my mind in this day and age. But for this food I'm willing to make an exception. Absolutely will return!

Ugh. I am from out of town and remember this place being the best for pizza and cheesesteaks. Not anymore. Just ordered a pizza and cheesesteak and a lump of cheese showed up along with a roll and few pieces of meat. The pizza wasn't cut properly and was over cheesed and under sauced. I've posted a picture. The steak was dry and didn't fill the roll. Very disappointing. And I spent $25.00 for this mess of a lunch. It's very sad to see this once good restaurant lose its core: caring about their food.

Food is usually great. It's a pain that they don't take credit cards (cash or check only). No website or online menus...seems absurd in 2015!

  • Rudy N.

Once upon a time this used to be the best place in the area for cheesesteaks, hoagies and pizza. That has changed a lot in recent years while the quality has gone down, the portions have gotten smaller and the prices have gone up. And after all these years they still will not give you your check so you can look it over or pay the waitress like a normal restaurant, you do not get to look at your check until you have stood in line to pay at the register. The second star is because they still make a pretty good milkshake.

Put simply, Pepper Mill makes some of the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly. Nearly every time I'm the area, I stop at Pepper Mill, a small locally owned hoagie place. They are famous for their cheesesteaks -- and rightly so. The steak is finely chopped, and the melted cheese holds the steak together like delicious glue. It's how a cheesesteak should be. The taste is enhanced by the optional toppings - I recommend onions, mushrooms, and sweet peppers (the latter is particularly delicious). The chicken cheese steak is just as good. They also serve specialty cheesesteaks, such as buffalo chicken and pizza steak. My only complaint is that the bread was a little soggy in my takeout order, but that didn't take away from the sandwich. The French Fries are also delicious. Thick cut fries that you can get with Old Bay seasoning or Cajun. The milkshakes, I hear, are good as well. Also very affordable - a large hoagie will run you $8-10. Overall, if you're in the area you can't go wrong with Pepper Mill.

First let's start with the over 9.00 for a 12 inch cheese steak. A bit pricey but is packed with meat. The sandwich was good. The reason I rank the place so low is due to the cleanliness of the place. It was filthy! I sat at the bar and was getting work done on my phone when my meal came. As I sat there and are it I could do nothing but watch the kitchen seeing it was in front of me. I watched for 10 minutes and only saw 1 person wash their hands. There were 10 people in the kitchen. It seemed like everyone was eating also. At one point I counted 6 people chewing. I got disgusted. In front of the freezer was a pile of French fries on the floor and nobody seemed to care. I watched the one girl eat them make a wrap as she was still chewing! I doubt anyone has taken a safe serve class . Be careful as you eat there ! The picture is only a portion of the dirt on the floor.

  • Elizabeth S.

Used to love it here but now I can't get past the dirt and rodent traps all over the place (very visible traps set up just outside the doors and dumpster on my last visit). I like the food but won't be back unless there is a massive cleaning and extermination effort.

  • Robert P.

Dingy dirty place. Really bad pizza and ok cheese steaks. The Italian grinder is pretty good. Cheese fries when right are really great.

  • Dan K.

I was leery off reordering here because of some of the lukewarm reviews but we ordered delivery tonight and it was very good. Wife got a chicken cheesesteak which she said was just ok. I got a cheesesteak with and it was one of the better I've gotten outside of Philly. Our go to for cheesesteaks

    (4)
  • Johnny V.

Not the Peppermill I used to remember. The Buffalo chicken cheesesteaks were fabulous, but the hamburger was extremely bland with no flavor at all. Service was OK but overall pretty slow. Fries were the big hit. A bit overpriced also.

  • Matt L.

I used to live in the West Chester area but recently moved to North Jersey and surely miss having this place around the corner. My fiance and I were back down in PA this past weekend and once again had to visit this place for lunch. Amazing!!!. I would rate the cheese steak and cheese fries here as a complete 5 star experience. Other items I've ordered in the past are hit and miss which is why I'm giving this a 4 star rating. The onion rings, cheese fries and hoagies are awesome but their pizzas and salads are enghh. Stick with hoagies when you visit; especially the cheese steaks. Seriously competes with some of the best from Philly and certainly heads and shoulders above Pat's and Geno's in my opinion. FYI.....Cash only.

  • Audrey P.

This old grey mare just ain't what she used to be. Prices have gone up, quality has gone down. Pepper Mill was a long time favorite of ours, but now it costs roughly the same as a much nicer dinner, so usually we opt for better quality for our $. Their broccoli poppers can't be found elsewhere though, so I still pick them up from time to time. The last few cheesesteaks we've gotten have been greasy and to light on the meat and cheese. I miss the old days!

    (3)
  • Ed N.

I agree with some of the reviews here. Peppermill used to be my favorite spot to get cheesesteaks (regular, chicken, and buffalo chicken). However, recently, their portions have become much smaller than in the past and the quality is just not the same. I still go here occasionally because the food is decent and it has a nostalgic environment.

    (3)
  • Andrew V.

Really go here for nostalgia anymore. This place has been around for as long as I can remember. They make good cheesesteaks, milk shakes, and crinkle cut fries; everything else on the menu is hit or miss but you'll never go wrong with this. It's gotten pretty expensive over the years but unless you're willing to travel a bit, this is your best option for a cheesesteak in the area. Just know before you go they don't take credit cards, cash only.

    (3)
  • Cara T.

I drive all the way from MontCo just to eat at the Pepper Mill. This unassuming little spot has the best cheesesteaks in the 'burbs. Hands down. No contest. Get the "premier". It's the only choice. They also have delicious milkshakes and great old bay fries. Basically you'll gain 5 pounds eating here. Anytime we have people in from out of town that want to eat cheesesteaks and we don't feel like going downtown, Pepper Mill is the spot. Heads up...they only take cash!!!!!!

    (5)
  • Chris M.

Awesome cheesesteaks! They say that they are the best, and I agree to that. The only thing not so nice is the dinning room. It feels outdated and just not kept to standards. Plus, they only accept cash. They need to get with the times and get a credit card machine and I feel they will increase profit greatly. I may be undersold on those points, but I am still coming back for the triple cheesesteak!

    (3)
  • Stephen Z.

Just moved to the area and we have been able to try a couple things on the menu thus far. Things have been good but not necessarily skyrockets in flight good. One big drawback is cash only, which they advertise or tell you about until you're ready to pay the bill. I understand that this is just how they roll and always have but they are not necessarily any cheaper than other places and probably even a little more expensive than competitors. $9.00 for pepper and eggs sub? Only stating bc relative To the same price as having a steak sandwich. I mean how expensive are eggs really? The building is apparently the same as it's always been so they're not putting that extra money (from not taking credit cards) into capital. Doorways haven't been washed in years, bathrooms are most likely in violation of health code and the place has a unique odor but the Bottom line is that the place has been around forever so they obviously have something good going on.

    (3)
  • Douglas S.

I've been a regular take-out customer (live in the neighborhood) for past 2 years. At first, food was good and order was precise and promptly delivered. Recently (past 4-6 months) orders are often incorrect, deliveries seem to get lost and food is so so (pizza dough undercooked, sandwiches just average). What happen? Recently, we have been exploring other options. Such a shame...

Discovered this place over 20 yrs ago while in nursing school at CCH and it was THE place to go for cheesesteaks. I would have definitely given it 5 stars back then! We still go back a few times a year now, but today might have been our last trip. As I am very nostalgic and hate change, I both love and hate the fact that this place has not changed a bit over the years. It feels homey and welcoming, but at the same time could definitely use a good deep cleaning, as other reviewers have noted. As for the quality of their cheesesteaks, I'm not sure if my taste has grown more picky over the years, or if their steaks are just actually getting worse... but I don't find them to be quite as good anymore and the ones we got today were definitely NOT worth the $9 each! I know other reviewers dislike the parking, but I've never found it to be that bad, even as a teenager. There are plenty of spaces out back if you're too chicken to back out onto 352 when leaving. My biggest issue by far is the fact that they do NOT accept credit cards! I guess it's not as bad when you are just popping in for a personal lunch, but I was really taken back when I placed a huge order for my business and then was told at pick up that they only accept cash or checks. It's not like I carry a business check or tons of cash around with me, so I'm not sure how they survive. I'm sure they are loosing TONS of business because of this policy. I could understand it if they were just trying to keep costs down, but i don't see that to be the case at $9 per cheesesteak.

  • Shauna D.

I been here so many times as a kid and I haven't been here I'm a while at least a few.months and this time when I went the food was cold and I waited forever just for French fries which the waitress forgot. I don't think I'll be coming back. Good bye pepper mill.

    (1)
  • Brian D.

Did a large takeout order and although the youngster on the other end of the phone didn't instill confidence, they got it right! They missed the sides of slaw but we really cared about all the cheese steaks and numerous options that people ordered. We'll be back again! The real bummer to know ahead of time is they don't accept plastic. If you get surprised by that, they send you to run next door to WAWA to get cash from the magic money machine (ATM).

  • Derek T.

Great family restaurant for the "I don't want to make dinner tonight option". Pizzas and hoagies are great, service is good. This is an institution in the greater West Chester area.

    (4)
  • Nani P.

I only get takeout here but food is great, I love their breakfast super fast and cheap! My only reason for 3 stars is because of the inside is really old and kind of smelly/dirty in the back entrance.. But I will return because it's so convenient but I do think updating is definitely a must.

    (3)
  • Julia B.

Very good cheesesteak. About $10 a sandwich which struck me as high, but the meat is great and the sandwich is huge. My waistline is sad that this place is so close and delicious!

    (4)
  • Austin S.

I went to the Peppermill and I ordered a premium cheesesteak.it was absolutely delicious. The service was quick and painless. Definitely check this place out!

    (5)
  • J.B. W.

I can only vouch for the cheesesteak but this has to be the best cheesesteak in chester county - great for us suburbians. I've ordered here several times with work and even with the travel time the food is still very warm and it travels well so don't be afraid to stop in for take out. I'm looking forward to trying pizza from here also.

  • D F.

I've been going to Pepper Mill for years and rate it high as a neighborhood pizza shop. I love many of the items on the menu. I stop by often on Sunday Mornings for breakfast as well. The Cheesesteaks are a true Philly Cheesesteak and rank high as one of the better in the area. I love the fries and enjoy the pizza. Regular readers will recognize my frustrations with Cash only establishments. This is one of them. I would also recommend a little reinvestment into the building by the owners but may be the fact that it doesn't change keeps it feeling so comfortable.

    (4)
  • Matthew Y.

Outside of Tony Lukes outposts, this is the best cheesesteak you can find in the suburbs. In fact, the best buffalo chicken cheesesteak I have ever had. Everything here is done right - the steak is juicy and slathered in cheese, the rolls are perfect, and the portions are large. It's hard to pinpoint how one spot can have a cheesesteak so much better than others, but Pepper Mill delivers. Just be advised, cash only.

    (5)
  • Chantal G.

Among the best cheesesteaks around, period. Great fries, always good service. Reuben Stromboli is completely legit and should be tried. PS-parking was ample.

    (4)
  • Sara M.

Dear Peppermill, thank you for never disappointing. Today you made my day with your super delicious chicken cheeseteak. The only one who doesn't like you is my diet.

    (5)
  • Janet M.

Great diner-type food - pastrami, burgers, fries. It's very popular. Can't recommend the pulled pork and haven't tried the pizza yet. Would love for them to do a deep clean.

    (4)
  • Bruce L.

I stopped here one day with a few friends on a whim. The parking is annoying. Food was okay but nothing blew me away. I would definitely recommend their sandwiches over Wawa.

    (3)
  • Emily J.

Living in West Chester, I've grown up on the Pepper Mill. It's always been the go to place for me and my friends, and I have yet to be disappointed. My go-to is the cheese steak and their fabulous fries. I've had some of their cheese steak variations as well, and all of them are good. I'm also a fan of their Stromboli. If you're planning on getting anything from the Pepper Mill on the go, I'd suggest placing a take out order to pick up instead of getting it delivered. Especially if you're ordering fries, they lose their crispiness (which is why I love them) by the time they arrive.

    (4)
  • Mystery D.

Nothing fancy but awesome for breakfast and lunch. The food is good. The only drawback is the tables are waaaay too close together - try their cheesesteaks

    (5)
  • Bruce C.

we ordered buffalo chicken tenders, BLT hoagie and small pepperoni pizza, the pizza had no pepperoni, even though the receipt clearly indicated PEPPERONI.everything else was as ordered, BTW pizza was good even pepperoni-less.. last week my wife wanted to come home from work for lunch i ordered a pizza for pickup, when she arrived to pick it up, her/my order was no where to be found... I guess we can write these issues off as peppermill lacks supervision.. anyway peppermill has great food, does not accept credit cards which is always raises a red flag for the IRS...

Whenever I'm in the area for any extended period of time, I demand we go eat at the Pepper Mill. My family has been eating here for probably 10+ years. Their pizzas and calzones are tasty, but I also love their hamburgers, which I usually get. My sister loves their chicken cheesesteak ($7.05 small, $8.25 large), and my mom loves their regular cheesesteak ($6.95 small, $7.95 large). Their iced teas ($1.50) come in huge, refillable paper cups. No matter what, we always get an order of fries to share ($3.25). Their fries are some of the best fries I've ever had. The waitresses are always friendly, the food is fast, and the place is a bit run-down, but it just adds to the charm. The bathroom is usually 50-50 on being clean. A note: it's cash only, and you pay at the counter when you're done your meal (tell them your table number, which is on the wall next to your table).

  • Jeremy L.

This place might be outdated and from time to time their website is down. Don't get upset just give them a call. A few things I love about this place is that their cheesesteaks are great (for the Paoli area). They are not the best, however probably in the top 5 of my choices in Chester County. Walking into the Peppermill might scare you, because the door slams shut and it sounds like someone fired a gun. When you walk in through the back (WaWa side) you will come out next to the counter. That door slamming shut behind you earlier must have sent you on a time warp to 1977 in which you end up in a truck stop cafeteria. That is when I know this place is going to be sweet. My office orders from there at least once a month, and here are the favorites (I tried them all!) Potato Chunks: These things are little cubes of potato's seasoned like really good curley fries. These are an essential side to any sandwich, also a regular order is enough to split between two people. Get these you will not go wrong. Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak: This cheesesteak is very good, it is exactly what it sounds like, chopped up chicken with buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing, all of these flavors are creating a party in your mouth. Cheesesteak: The plain is just okay, Premier Cheesesteak: Now we are talking! For a dollar more you can get premium cuts of steak as your cheesesteak. Get it with mushrooms, sauce and onions. This meal will fill you up for a day (especially with the chunks). This place is good and the food is always pretty solid, I know I did have better - but for the proximity it might just be the best in a 10 mile radius.

Growing up at Goshen Friends School across the street, I fell madly in love with the sweet, wafting aroma of the Pepper Mill's frying onions long before I was man enough to eat them. Their pizza was a regular part of my childhood diet, and I dropped in today for some lunch and a kick of nostalgia. I parked out back and placed an order at the counter for a cheesesteak with fried onions to go. I scanned the dining room, which is pretty much exactly the same as when I was a kid, with a lunch clientele that looked heavy on senior citizens. The sandwich was great, juicy and greasy with gooey American cheese and a light helping of onions. I expected no less after so many years. I'm not in the neighborhood very often, but when I am, I find the Pepper Mill pretty irresistible.

The breakfast is absolutely amazing and servers are always a pleasant sight in the morning, cheesesteaks are good, but you def need to try their breakfast

A-ok. Hubby's family is from pa and we come here every time we visit. Good prices and large portions. Not the best food, but they can always accommodate our crowd.

    (3)
  • Shawn R.

The only complaints I have about this place stem from things outside of their food quality. The parking lot is obnoxious to get into and out of easily. This place also doesn't take credit cards so expect to bring cash. I guess that is the authentic Italian experience. A restaurant that only deals with unmarked bills. I love their pizza though. A nice combination of cheese, tomato sauce and grease. My heart beats slowly at the thought of it. Most likely due to health reasons. They also have great cheesesteaks. My family definitely frequents this place often.

We got a Pizza Cheese Steak Stromboli New Years Eve - it was absolutely delicious; not greasy, meat was tender, sauce was not spicy tasted like marinara sauce. Kudos to the staff, Happy New Year!

    (5)

Great buffalo chicken cheese steak and don't sleep on the potato chunks with cheese if you like the fries you will love these

    (4)
  • Jenn F.

Average food and service. Accepts only cash or check. Tables are a bit small for number of chairs per table.

    (3)
  • Freddie F.

Their cheesesteak is superb. An excellent roll, chopped tasty beef with perfectly grilled onions. The pizza, don't bother. Service is friendly, I always get the steak sammich and always have a good time.

    (4)
  • Dave H.

You gotta order the Triple Cheese Steak! It's money. Good flavor, not very greasy and love the 3 cheeses. I will be back to try some other things.

    (4)
  • Andrew W.

I agree with the service comments above, but they still get 5 stars from me. The place is so busy it's hard to complain about waiting. I've been going to the Pepper Mill for over a decade, and traditionally I would order a Pizza Steak, a Stromboli or a Pizza (which is far and away the best in the area). Recently I've found some new sandwiches, though. The Pulled Pork is great, and when its on their Cuban Sandwich it's outrageous. For this style of food there is no substitute.

    (5)
  • James W.

Agree 100% with Amanda's review - the place is homey, no-nonsense cheesesteaks, sandwiches, salads, pizza and bolis. Their cheesesteaks are superior. They also have great milkshakes. They do the basics well and have a lot of variety on their menu. As Amanda said, the waitstaff is (and always has been) made up of high school students - some are friendly, some are humiliated by having to work (which I enjoy just as much). Forget about parking in front, which is a kamikaze-like experience when backing out onto 352 - use the back lot by the Wawa. There's a video game in the back entrance to distract yer teens if desired.

    (4)
  • Colleen C.

Cheap, good food. I recommend the cheese steaks, broccoli poppers, and milkshakes.

    (3)
  • Caroline V.

Any place that turns a sandwich into a grinder but even improves it by putting it on garlic bread has me as a fan! The sandwiches are friggin awesome then again it might be the crispy cheesy garlic bread coma i'm in after i eat most of it. They are HUGE and super packed with all kinds of goodies. Menu has lots of options and is reasonably priced. Maybe i'm biased cuz i love cheese and i love garlic bread...but YUM!

At the intersection on Paoli Pike and PA Route 352, the Pepper Mill has been a mainstay of the take-out community for decades. Perfecdt for hoagies, cheese steaks, salads, and pizza, this restaurant could easily be taken as yet another grease pit on a highway dotted with nondescript businesses, hiding behind vast parking lots and ugly plastic signs. But there's something more to the Pepper Mill that you won't really know until you step inside. The cheese steaks drip with just the right combination of hot beef tallow and melted sheese, the rolls' crust crackles in your mouth as they yield to chewy dough and warm piles of cheesy, shredded beef inside. I stop here occasionally on a cold day for a nice hot cheese steak or to pick up a pizza on my way home. Its a nice, fiendly place, and hope it occupies this corned for decades more to come. My favorite time to visit is when its snowing. The plucky owners keep it open, even though most of their clientele hide at home, afraid of the white stuff. Nice to have the place to myself. Yum.

  • Amer S.

Great cheesesteaks. Each time i am in west chester,pa, I need to make a stop here. There are gigantic and quite greasy. Since i am not from Philly, Ihaven't tried authentic downtown philly joints, but for W.Chester, this place satisfies my cravings..

    (4)

    great cheessteaks

  • Ray R.

This place is dirty, the food is greasy, the service isn't all that friendly, the menu is a bit overpriced, they only take cash, and I feel gross the rest of the day after eating there... and yet I keep going back.

  • Tracee S.

I Love their Cheesesteaks!! Service: Younger staff, but they get the job done and seem pretty nice. Location: Corner of North Chester, near Paoli Pike. You can't miss the big red PEPPER MILL sign. Must Try: Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak (it's messy so make sure you get plenty of napkins) Summary: One of the many menus that has come across my doorstop. I tried it because it was close (walking distance). I can drive there in 2 min, walk in 10. I tried a Cheesesteak and it was pretty good. It's not the best I've ever had, but considering the convenience factor and the price... It gets the job done when I can't make it into the city. This place is eat-in or take-out, and they also serve Pizza, wraps, and a host of other menu items. Definitely worth a try if you're in the neighborhood. I wits they sold wings though, that would be great. UPDATE 11/10/11: So after coming back and reading this review 3 years later, I've come to the conclusion that Pepper Mill is my favorite place to go for a cheesesteak. And anyone who's ever come to visit me from out of town has told me the same thing. So if you live in the West Chester area and you're looking for a good cheesesteak, check this place out.

    (4)
  • Steve S.

The best buffalo chicken cheesesteak in the area. It's huge, it's real, and it's spectacular!

    (4)
  • Kurt P.

Everything that comes out of this restaurant is HUGE. Seriously, a "small" hoagie is over a foot long. No man/woman needs to order anything bigger than a small unless sharing. I really like the roast beef/horseradish hoagie- the horseradish sauce could be a little more "horseradishy?", but it is still good nonetheless. If you are feeling like a philly- go with the chicken over the steak. They seem to screw up delivery a lot- definitely check your order before they leave.

  • Todd B.

Well, I know as I write this I am the minority. That being said, if you don't mind FILTH--then, "go for it". I ate here 10/9/11 after not having eaten there in probably 2 years. The dining room was disgusting. The chairs have about 20 years of grease and filth on them. The floor was filthy as was the bathroom. The place just skeeved me BIGTIME and I'm not a cleanliness phenatic. The pizza was very flimsy and soggy. I thought it may have just been ours but as I looked at other tables' pizza, there's were the same. I'm good for not returning here, ever.

    (2)
  • Reggie S.

If you need good take out, this place might be okay. The food is decent but as a family restaurant, it needs to be updated. Its 2013, get a credit card machine. Maybe offer a limited beer selection. Kids menu maybe?

    (2)
  • Sara S.

The Pepper Mill used to be my "around the corner, go-to" pizza place. The pizzas are great (if they still have the four-cheese pizza, it's amazing) and the chicken cheese steaks never disappoint (except for the one time they forgot to add cheese to mine...but I'm willing to overlook ONE mistake out of many, many successes). I'm knocking off a star because they only take cash and sometimes, that can be annoying...but always worth it!

    (4)
  • Matt B.

Food was good and our waitress was great but the place was just really dirty. The drop ceiling panels looked their had been some water damage and not replaced. The ceiling light wallking out the back was full of dead flies and the bathroom needed a hosedown. It is what it is, but could be so much better.

  • Michael K.

Chicken cheese steak is as good as it gets! Ample meat on a tasty freshly baked roll.

Very good hoagies and Cheesesteaks. Pizza is decent. Cons: Parking and seating is terrible at lunch and they don't take credit cards.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians.
