Lovely & very comfortable. Had a long business day in Washington & my niece recommended this place. We arrived @ 5pm on a Friday night & the place was busy but we were seated right away. The hostess was pleasant and attentive. All of our food was well prepared & pleasant to the eye. The Fried Zucchini appetizer was great. The Wedding Soup and Lobster Bisque were great. The side salad was great. I only had one problem. The Delmonico steak I ordered was cooked perfectly & it was a nice size but there wasn't any seasoning on it... The Blackened Tuna was good... The Fried Shrimp we asked them to prepare it Scampi style & it was perfectly done. I would definitely return, but I would order something different as my main course.

Good food, the place is freezing though. Nice wait staff. Easy parking. A Lillie pricy but good portions. Better for dinner than lunch,

What a great find! I am in Washington on occasion for work and in the past have settled for getting my meals at one of the many chain restaurants along Route 19/Washinton rd.. Never again! The restaurant is very charming. The night I was there I had the pleasure of dining at the bar next to some of the nicest people (Ken, thank you for the beer!). Had the Union Grill Cut, a 14 oz. strip steak that was cooked exactly to my desired temp. Jimmy the bartender was as friendly as I had read in others reviews. I am looking forward to returning on my next visit!

Every town has that one place that you just have to go to, even small towns. Without a doubt, the Union Grill is THE place to go in Washington, PA. Whether for lunch or dinner, this place is a great stop. When I was there, I'd usually grab either the Rachael or the Roberta sandwich. There's a great pasta selection too. I probably went in at least half a dozen times, probably more. The atmosphere is kinda fun - there's one area that's built into the stone foundation. It's usually pretty hopping too.
(5)Kathy D.
I ordered the Lobster Ravioli and it was so delicious and very reasonably priced too!
(5)Gretchen M.
I felt steak prices were a little high. We waited almost an hour for our dinner and all that was said was that they were sorry and I noticed my Pepsi was not charged for when we got the bill. Others that came in after we did had their dinners before us. Do not plan to go back any time soon. If we do go back I think I will ordwer from the sandwich menu.

Have eaten here several times and it is pretty good for the area. Nice bar and great dishes. A favorite of mine when visiting this little town.

I generally fancy myself a tough critic, However no "plastic" (chain) restaurants for me - when in the Washington, pa area, this is my restaurant of choice especially for their Italian fare - I also find it reasonably priced!

While on our way to take our son back to school in Maryland in January, this place was highly suggested by the front desk at the hotel where we were staying for the night. We were told that it was a great spot and much like the bar in "Cheers". Well, one part of that came true..... it was a place where everyone needed to know your name! When we arrived, we were told that there would be a 20 minute wait. That wait turned into 40 minutes, with at least 3 groups being seated before us. At one point, the not too friendly hostess referenced to her boss ( in code, I might add) that we had been there for quite some time when he referenced sitting a group of 2 instead. He merely said "that's alright" and went ahead and seated the group that he obviously knew. Standing by the hostess station and able to hear the conversations, I can attest that none of the groups had reservations. We left after 40 minutes. Probably 20 minutes too long. Never was there any acknowledgement of our wait, or reassurance that we hadn't been forgotten. Good food? We'll never know. Sure hope that manager stays in Washington where everyone seems to know HIS name.....

Great local restaurant. Any time I can eat here it is a treat. The food is excellent. And the restaurant decor is definitely a need to see. Its not without its bad parts though. In the winter, if you sit ANYWHERE near the front door expect to freeze anytime anyone opens the door. Its ALWAYS packed. Expect a wait, but its worth it. Parking is a bit of a pain. No parking lot, only on street parking right near it, so bring quarters. But all in all, if your from around the Washington PA area and have not been here, you have to try it.

From the great appetizers like fried zucchini, fried provolone to delicious calzones, to stuffed steak with shrimp and cheese. Blue cheese crusted veal with peppers, onions, and pepperoni. A great Italian American restaurant in Washington. A full service bar is convenient while you wait to be seated.
(5)Jason A.
Great food, service, and the waitress had a sense of humor right back at us. I would definitely go back.
(5)Bob Y.
Decent food, overpriced for what you get... Service is generally good... Is a nice atmosphere (but very loud) . If prices were a bit less, or food was a bit better then maybe, but my wife and I go here then say "oh Yea, we weren't going to come back were we"... But somehow we always do... Sadly this is one of the only places in Washington with decent non chain atmosphere. Really wish they had better food... It's almost there, but they need that last 10 percent.

Union Grill is right in the middle of what I can only guess is historic downtown Washington,PA. This place has got a neighborhood bar type atmosphere. There seemed to be lots of regulars. My husband and I came for lunch with our 3 month old son. They sat us in the small back room where we had lots of privacy. We ordered the stuffed banana peppers with melted provolone cheese. The peppers were pretty good and very spicy. I'm not sure if I care to order them again though. For our entree we decided to split a medium chicken bacon ranch pizza. My husband wanted to add buffalo sauce to the chicken and some melted blue cheese crumbles as well. Our waitress was very helpful and did a great job when we customized our pizza order. It came out exactly how we wanted and tasted great! This basement bar had lots of old charm. It's a unique place and a great spot to check out for quick fast bar food. It may not look like much, but the service and food were both great!

Was so good and Delicious had the chicken Marquette... love the sauce and how the Italian dressing on salad is home made

We are traveling east from Indiana and ended up in Washington, PA for the night and just finished an awesome meal at The Union Grill. At the recommendation of Debbie, our very attentive and friendly waitress, my husband decided on the Blue Cheese Herb Crusted Veal with a side Pasta with Olive Oil and Garlic. Two thumbs up from the husband! I decided on the Veal Romano with the green bean side and was very pleased, although I wish they had had a ladies portion. Since we are traveling, we didn't take my leftovers and it felt very wasteful. Pleasant atmosphere and friendly folks, along with great food, make this a perfect place to dine if you are traveling through Washington, PA.

This was my first time eating out in WashPA and was pleasantly surprised. Parking is all metered outside but is free after 6pm. The location is downstairs so it's a little dark. We ordered the fried zucchini as an appetizer and so glad we did. It was delicious. Ordered the white pizza and the pizza crust was thin, chewy & crispy. They have 3 different sizes. The pasta portions are also big. Service was prompt and host/servers were attentive and nice. Dinner for 2 was around $30.
(4)Jeff M.
I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much with the recommendation from the two somewhat entertaining ladies working the front desk at the hotel. However, it is a pretty cool little spot. Walking in on a cold night is a great experience. Awesome speakeasy feel from the street. Sat down and liked the place immediately although I was a bit disappointed in the tap selection. However they had a bottle that served the purpose so no real loss. A pretty large menu with quite a few specialty dishes and the prices seemed fair. I ended up settling on the white pie pizza that was listed as a specialty. A little greasy but it was very good. I really enjoyed the crumpled cheese on top and the crust was well prepared. The staff was attentive and it was a great experience. If you are in town, give it a shot.

What small town food is supposed to be like. This place is a hidden gem in Washington PA. The restaurant / bar is located under a turn of the century building and has been renovated tastefully to show off the old world charm of the place but have modern amenities. The food here is always awesome. I usually get whatever is on the special board when I walk-in. The bar also has a pretty good selection of beers and top shelf liquors if you here for more than just a meal. This is the place to go in Washington.
(5)Buddy G.
Our favorite restaurant in WashPa, this gem is cozied away, down a set of steps, underneath the building on the corner of Wheeling and Main. Food is usually excellent with 3 specials per day. Bartenders are some of the longest tenured I've ever had the pleasure of buying a drink from with some ringing in at 18+ years working at the Union Grille. Love the smoky, speak-easy style ambiance, Union Grille feels like the set from a scene in some movie.
(5)Rose L.
Always good. Waitress never told us about specials or i might have given 5 stars. Portion sizes are too large, but where in the USA aren't they? Up front I ask for half to go. Look at the architecture while you are there.
(4)Mark R.
Staying in the beef family, I decided to try the delmonico steak. it Is listed as 16oz and comes buried in caramelized onions. It took up about all of the plate! This maybe be the absolute best stall I have ever had! It needs no seasoning and really rich taste. This can't be related to hamburger in anyway. The $23.99 price tag was really great for the piece of meat alone, but you can get either soup or salad, and a side standard tater choices or their specialty marinara and spaghetti. You maybe thinking Italian and steak? Isn't that taking away precious stomach room for steak? Take pasta home! Of course, I started with fried zucchini so I had some of that take with me too. The menu is real big. The seafood pasta is now linguini fantasy and has crabmeat, shrimp, mussels, and scallops. Their dinner salad is literally iceberg lettuce, a tomato, a beet and couple pieces of carrot. The main dishs makes up for it big time

This Monday at about 11am we were just looking for somewhere to eat while driving through the area. This place seemed to be the only place open. When walking in it definitely just looks like a whatever bar and grill. The servers and hostess were fairly rude, chucking menus on the table, rolling eyes and just making you feel unwelcome in general. After opening the menu and finding out that it was about $20 per person to eat we immediately left. The lack of personality and friendliness combined with the high prices was enough to drive us out.

Visiting Washington while my son is visiting Washington & Jefferson College. This restaurant exceeded my expectations even though it came highly recommended. I sat at the bar and asked the bartender what he recommended. I had the stuffed hot banana pepper appetizer which was awesome and sweet peppered shrimp which was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. The place was packed with locals as well as visitors. Very casual local place. I highly recommend it.
(5)Jason A.
Not bad actually, kid friendly, decent service. Passing through from Northern VA, so not to much of a detour off of 70 to have something better than interstate rest stop or fast food. I did think it was a bit expensive for what you get. Place was pretty full on a Tuesday night which is probably a good sign. Lot of locals kind of place...
(4)Bob B.
Based on Yelp reviews, stopped in while passing through Washington en route to Columbus. Collectively, all the reviews were pretty spot on. I just had 2 beers, but they were cheap and cold. Nice place inside, and I can see what it would be a popular anti-chain destination for locals in a fairly desolate downtown (lots of empty storefronts).
(4)Keith L.
Great food, good prices, and good service. Will for sure eat here again if I come back to town. Would recommend to anyone visiting Washington.
(5)Nicole W.
I somehow grew up in Washington and never once went to Union Grill. Weird, right? Well on a recent trip back home, my mom finally brought me to try it out. I can definitely see the appeal of the place since it is a far cry from all the chain restaurants flooding the area as of late. You get to go down a few steps into the place and feel like you transported back a few decades to a different era. It's a very charming restaurant and would be good for just about any occasion- family dinner, a cozy date, girlfriend lunch- you get the picture. We started off with the fried zucchini and it was really good. However, the marinara sauce was a little boring. For my lunch, I had ordered the Spinach Pasta. I really wasn't a fan.... It looks like there was a tub of feta dumped on the top and everything was sitting in a pool of oil at the bottom of the plate. It was pretty bland and greasy. The others at my table ordered: a ruben sandwich, a cheesesteak sandwich, and a pizza. They all said that they liked their lunch. I enjoyed the atmosphere and our server was great. Perhaps as a non-veg this place would be better since there are plenty of menu items to choose from.
(3)Alyson O.
I don't understand the draw to this place, the food is not that great, the atmosphere is dark and the staff is cold and condescending. I don't care to go back.

Can i give less than 1 star? We walked in and waited to give our name to the hostess who was whispering behind a menu to a waitress about other customers. When she was done, she took our name and told us it would be about 30 mins. (this was at 7:20 pm) There was another customer there who was complaining she'd been waiting for an hour and a half. When i asked the hostess if that was true, she told me she had a party of 9 and since i was only a party of 2, it wouldn't be near that long. We proceeded to the bar to wait. Bartender was friendly, but when i asked for a drink menu, she suggested we complain to the menu because they didn't have one and she's worked there for years and thought it was ridiculous there wasn't a drink menu. At 8:40, our table became ready (note this was 1 hr, 20 mins, not 30 mins as estimated). We were seated and about 10 mins later, we were brought water and bread. I though the person bringing our bread was just a server, not our waitress, but it turns our it was our waitress and although she looked like she was busting her hump trying to wait on all her tables, she never introduced herself nor apologized for our wait. We ordered fried zucchini (after reading other reviews that it was great) and 2 beers. It arrived several mins later and was ok. We then ordered our entrees, which came with a salad, Salad was iceberg with a canned beet on top. seriously. At 9:45, our entrees still had not arrived. We walked out. i have NEVER walked out of any establishment before, but i was so disappointing with this lack of service that i refused to wait any longer. (We had a gift card and did leave that to cover the cost of our drinks/appetizer). I can assure you i will not be back and do not recommend this place to anyone. The complete disorganization was unlike anything i've experienced before.

I've been here twice already with a group of coworkers. First time we went just to try something new and I saw it ranked good on Yelp. Went back the second time because of the good food, service, and portions the first time. It was just as tasty and impressive the second time, except the hostess seemed in a bad mood this time. Our waitress was great though. She was pretty much an expert on what was on the menu and on special. We'll definitely be back again and we'll bring some more folks from the office.
(4)pracheta t.
Okay so I have never had the food here but I have been here for a fundraiser and met with friends for drinks. Both times have been great and perhaps I'll have dinner next time I go. The bartenders and staff are friendly and the place itself is clean, big and family friendly.

Union Grill is located adjacent to Washington & Jefferson College in the historic town of Washington, PA. I bet it would be a little hard to find without a GPS, but we had one so it was no problem. It appeared there was plenty of parking (metered and lots). It was a good halfway point for us during a recent visit to northern Ohio. We stopped for lunch after reading some reviews on Yelp. Union Grill is a interesting place. You walk down a few steps to enter and then feel like you are stepping into an earlier-era restaurant. There is a very welcoming bar in the center of the restaurant, which appeared to be populated with regulars. As there were tables open, we did not go to the bar, but it looked like the place to get the 411 on local town happenings. We were seated in one of the dining rooms which was towards the back of the establishment. It had a family/head table (six to eight seats) in the back of it, which appeared to be for regulars. It did get filled twice while we were there and reminded me of an old Italian restaurant that my family went to growing up in NYC. Our server was very polite and attentive. She got our drink orders promptly and put in our food order when we were ready. The establishment had a large enough wait staff to cover its tables and the servers appeared to be well coordinated. The menu had many American and Italian classics and some restaurant specials. We stuck to the lunch items, though the dinner entrees were very tempting (next visit). You can browse the menu at: theuniongrill.com/index_… . My mom had the Chicken Caesar salad and I had a medium-rare hamburger. We shared an order of onion rings. Everything tasted great and was appropriately sized. No complaints at all. We enjoyed the ambiance of the place and had a good time. I would definitely recommend the Union Grill if you are near the south-side of Pittsburgh. It is very close to the I-70 and I-79 junction which makes it convenient to those traveling in the area. It definitely beats any chain restaurant and its menu offers a lot of selections!

This place was recommended to me by several people, so I went with high expectations. Unfortunately, the place didn't live up to the hype for me. The food was average and truly I didn't find anything particularly special to comment on. I might give it another chance, but I'm in no hurry.
(3)Elizabeth S.
Quality food, nice atmosphere - not a great beer selection, though.

I was visiting Washington for a wedding this last weekend and asked at the hotel lobby for a recommendation for a good local non-chain place to eat. I was directed to The Union Grill. I made my way up there and was seated quickly at a booth with my significant other. It was a Friday night and the bar was packed but the rest of the dining room was at about 70% capacity with a few large parties. We looked the menu over for about 5 minutes before our server arrived to take a drink order. Two waters, no ice. 5 minutes later, they arrived with ice and the server immediately left. We went over the menu a bit more, and were ready to order when she returned 5 minutes later. I started ordering with a beer which she took and turned around to go ring it in. We were both hungry and ready to order something at this point but the server showed no interest in actually getting the order in. 8 minutes later, the beer arrived, tossed onto the table as the server went off again. At this point, this was beyond acceptable. After 10 minutes of no further contact, I finished my beer, asked another server the price for a glass of beer and walked out with that amount left on the table. I worked in the food service industry for many years, front and back of the house, and have never seen a situation like this before. This is the first time I have ever abandoned a meal, and felt bad doing it but with over half an hour at the table and not even a chance to order food I could not stay there any longer. I wish I could speak to the quality of the food since I read so many good reviews for it but there was no way we were going to submit ourselves to a further 30+ minutes to maybe get food.
(1)Christina W.
First reaction...curious. Because to get into the restaurant you have to go down concrete stairs, which made it feel like I was going into a club. (Strip!?) Except without a bouncer and seedy men hanging around the entrance. Ha! Anyways, it was absolutely none of the sort. The waiting area was small so reservations are highly recommended! This was a Saturday night so it was pretty packed, but once my friend gave her name we were seated within literally seconds of arriving. We had a party of 6 (Girls night) and were seated quite comfortably for having a larger party than the norm. Our waitress was on top of everything. If we needed water or more wine she was there. Service was wonderful...especially for being so busy. They had a decent wine list to choose from so that is always nice. Once we ordered we were served a delicious Italian bread, (With butter of course!) which would have been better served warm, but it tasted good nonetheless. I ordered the small portion of the Linguini with Hot Peppers Aglio, which included spicy banana peppers sautéed with olive oil & garlic along with a white wine and garlic butter sauce. This was a perfect portion for one individual. If you are planning to share your meal I would recommend ordering the large portion. You can add grilled chicken or sausage for an additional $3.00 charge, but I chose to keep it as is. I love spicy so this was perfect for me. However, once I bit into one of the peppers I thought my mouth was on fire. It was HOT! I could barely eat the rest of it. I ended up eating almost my entire bowl, but left the 4 large banana peppers because they were so hot. I thought I could handle it, but I guess not! The peppers did give the linguine just the right heat so I was extremely satisfied. I thought everything was wonderful and would absolutely go back. Of course, trying something different on my next visit :)
(5)Jess S.
Good service and excellent food. Parking can be tricky, but other than that it's the perfect place for a nice/quiet sit down for dinner and/or drinks.
(4)Matt W.
Great fried zucchini and awesome chicken pesto pizza. Among the best places to eat in WashPA
(4)Kristopher P.
We went here after an obstacle course race and the place was packed on a Saturday night. We sat at the bar and the food and the service were all very good. We really enjoyed our meals and the portions were very good size. I couldn't believe how big the appetizer of fried zucchini was. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 star rating is the crowd all gave us very strange looks as we walked in, almost like we were not welcome or out of place. I am not saying that is something that the restaurant can control, but it did feel a little weird while we were there.
(4)Laura P.
My dad and I work together and call this our satellite office for good reason - I'm at "the Grill" at least three days a week. While Washington is a small town and the Union Grill is a local favorite, it is not a hole in the wall, by far. The food is of very high quality and the nightly specials show that the chefs have sophistication and range. The wine list is very provincial, but the bartenders are excellent and friendly to all. I would recommend a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights because the line literally can go out of the door!
(4)Bill L.
Pleasantly surprised. Was out in the area and decided to pop in to check it out. Had an Italian Calzone for lunch. Thumbs up. Finished off meal with cheese cake. Another thumbs up. Nice atmosphere. Attentive wait staff. Would make a good meeting spot with friends or meal out with family or friends.
(4)Cheryl M.
This is one of my favorite places. It is a Cheers type atmosphere...come as you are...everyone knows your name...tons of charm! Be sure to sit at the bar. The food is fresh, homestyle, and very good.
(4)Amanda M.
Delicious... everything was satisfactory and then some. Reasonably priced great food. We found this place on our way through Washington heading for First Niagra Pavillion (or Starlake, or Post Gazette or whatever it might be now...) Great find.
(4)Mark W.
Good food and service. The fried zucchini was a huge order. Skip the stuffed steak.
(3)Jack K.
If you ever have need of being in WAPA, make sure you stop in at Union Grill for the best food in town. Jimmy, the bartender, is a friendly soul. If you've been there once or twice, chances are he'll remember you. This is where some of the local color goes to drink, smoke cigars, and watch sports. Try to ignore the envelopes being passed between guys in business suits. Its best not to ask too many questions.
(4)Jack W.
Found this place on the way home to Columbus. Was a little Leary with going down the stairs and no windows but was very pleasantly surprised when we walked in! The ambiance was great and the people were too! Had the white pizza and the chicken pizza. White was excellent!
(5)Darren R.
Came into town for a funeral and needed to find a place for the whole family to eat and socialize. We came to the Union and could not have been happier with the choice. Great food, great atmosphere. excellent service staff, this was a tremendous find and a fantastic dining experience for all. Oh and the Italian wedding soup is amazing.
(4)Hao C.
I ordered tuna melt which is so good! You can definitely tell it is prepared by heart and honesty
(5)Daniella B.
This was a great little Italian place. The portions are gigantic so watch out! The ingredients could use a bit more variety or ingenuity but for a small town, I felt that the quality of the dishes were better than what I expected. We loved the old paintings decorating the walls. The service is very friendly but a little on the slow side.
(4)DR. Joel R.
Great food and generous portions I have been eating here since college at w&j Every meal is wonderful Steaks are superb Highest recommendation
(5)John B.
Portions here are large. Can be split between 2 adults. Says it's good for kids but no child's menu and the kids items are ala carte so meal adds up quickly.
