This was the worst experience I've ever had at this restaurant. The staff pushed us to order when we didn't even have a chance to look at the menu. My husband's soda had food floating in the top of the cup. I ordered chicken tenders which were under cooked and tasted like fish. His burger was way over cooked and inedible. Neither of us ate our meals and sent them back and they still wanted us to pay for food that we didn't eat. They didn't even seem to care that the food wasn't edible. It was almost a fight to get something off the bill that we couldn't eat do to there lack of culinary skills. I will never go there again.

I never have anything bad here. This is far from fine dining but also has been consistently good. I stopped in here tonight with a craving for some comfort food. It takes a while to get through the menu and I do think there may be too much from which to choose. I ordered a hot open faced turkey sandwich with filling, with gravy. Much to my surprise it was real turkey! The sandwich part was great but the filling wasn't very tasty so maybe next time I'd get fries or a baked potato. The only misfortune is that they have Pepsi products, which i don't care for, but that's just my preference. They have a clear birch beer that was great. This place is also great for breakfast anytime.

Absolutely loved having breakfast here! Being from out of town, you never know what to expect at different places. The staff here was very nice though. Service was quick and the food was delicious with generous portions, especially for the price! I will definitely go back if I'm in the area again. I only wish that I could find a place like this near my home.

Inconsiderate. Was given a very nice table when we were first seated, then made to move to another table over my protests. Should have just left. Crab Benedict seemed like cat food Benedict except I kept getting pieces of shell. Hash browns were soggy.

This is our local diner... We've been going there for years. Some of the food items are better than others, here are a few of our favorites: As far as simple things go, we enjoy a basket of onion rings (always tasty & definitely large enough to share). The fried chicken salad or grilled shrimp salad are decent (though I'll always ask for romaine lettuce since it has more personality than iceberg)... Sandwiches: the cheeseburger club is a good -- I always ask for it on sourdough bread. All club sandwiches comes with a small bag of chips. Other favorites include the traditional gyro or Monte Cristo. While I am sure that the gyro meat is previously frozen, it is good (I can't imagine a diner selling enough to have a full-fledged vertical rotisserie.) My wife likes the cheese steak wrap with the sauce on the side. They do offer quite a selection of "Early Bird" specials that come with one less vegetable than the regular menu items, a slightly smaller serving, and your choice of pudding, ice cream or jell-o for dessert. Of the Early Birds, the chicken croquettes still come with two actual croquettes, so you end up having some to take home... Breakfast is pretty much your standard diner fair. The omelettes served over breakfast hours include homefies or hash browns -- you will pay extra for that outside of normal breakfast hours. I've had their blintzes; they're good, but the filling is certainly out of a can.

Well as promised I would get back to you guys ...but we went today and everything was good. Our waitress was one we never had before and she absolutely upheld the standard we are used too. Food was good, hot and delivered in a timely fashion so not sure what recent negative reviews are about . We had a good experience here (as usual )

If you factor in the prices at this gem, it would be 5* for sure. We probably eat here about 30 times a year, and the food is consistently good, with generous portions. We've been very pleased with the servers, and plan to keep coming back.

We recently visited the Reading area for a weekend music festival and happened across the 5th Street Diner while out re-stocking our camp supplies. It was hot out and we were hungry, so we decided to give it a try and were pleasantly surprised. The food was of a high quality--better than we expected for a diner--and the portions were generous. The wait staff was friendly and the restaurant seemed nice and clean.

Worst food and horrible service. I was there 5 years ago. And me and my buddies went not long ago. And we will never be back.

Good diner , if you understand the concept of keep it simple when you order. The menu is like any other Diner and offers a good breakfast. The place is clean and offers good service . Like 9 out of 10 other diners in america the guy making the food in the kitchen , does not understand or read english. He knows the menu cold , hence the reco the order off the menu. This tip you should remember anytime you order at a diner.

I ordered the hot corned beef sandwich. The sandwich was salty and dry. I felt like I was eating a beef jerky sandwich. The waitress also wasn't the most friendly person. I won't be coming back.

Classic diner. My favorite place to take my Dad for breakfast when I visit. Dinners are good too, as long as you are into traditional comfort food. I can never get enough of the Coleslaw!

I eat here about 3-4 times over the years. The food and the service has always been good.

Classic diner, neon lights, and a huge selection. However, the food was only OK. I had the chicken parm which was good, but my wife had the chopped sirloin, and our friend had the pork chops. Both of their meals were very over cooked. We also decided the deserts looked wonderful, but they were better yesterday. Overall, I would say that this is just your average place and nothing to make a special trip for.

It's a diner, which is popular around this area, if you're an out-of-towner, don't expect linen napkins and staff to call you sir and madam. It's a very laid back atmosphere, so if that's what you're looking for with pretty good food (for a diner.) Food is not waist-friendly, but that's the norm for diner food. The food most of the time is pretty good, I've had a variety through the years. Most of the waitresses are friendly and, again, laid back, like joking with you and leaning against the wall to take your order. I'm not saying that in a bad way...it's the atmosphere. If you want someone in a suit calling you sir, don't come here...lol You have your occasional grumpy waitress or host/hostess, but generally, everyone's pretty cool and friendly. Restaurant and bathrooms are clean. Plenty of parking. Food's good no matter what time you go. Definitely get a rowdy crowd later in the night/early am like when the bars close. I recommend their burgers (they used to be on kaiser rolls which I thought was better, but still good), creamed chipped beef (or SOS)....don't know what chipped beef or SOS is? LOL Sh** on a Shingle...welcome to Berks county! It's small pieces of smoked or dried beef in a white thick gravy type sauce over toast or home fries. (Think similar to biscuits and gravy in the south.) This is the best place for it! I get it all the time!

Friends and I would do up the 5th Street Diner after hockey games and almost every Friday night during high school. We've created so many funny memories here, and we're almost all still known as "frequents" to the place. The Diner is recently under new management, and I haven't had enough time to gauge the new owners and how the place is being run now, but everything seems the same. The menu is your typical diner menu, and straying away from the breakfast page is typically a bad idea unless you're ordering some of the appetizers or other sandwiches. Steaks, and other foods that you wouldn't expect to taste good at a diner, don't taste good. It's definitely worth a stop to try for yourself.

Typical diner food, not good, not bad, filling. Clean

If I could give this place the 5 stars because of all the wonderful memories I have being in the place, I would. The whole area of Reading is based around the "diner" lifestyle... so under 21 year olds venture to one of the many 24 hours diners around 11-midnightish while the 21 and over crowd will stumble in anytime after 2. 5th street Diner, though, had a plethera of all! Truckers, hipsters, punks, families, after prom, classy, white trashy, people of all walks of life. That's why I enjoy this place. On a few occasions I have eaten here when it wasn't past midnight and the things I recommend on the menu are: Mozzarela Sticks Lobster Bisque Chicken Fingers Crab Salad Pita Coffee Western Omelet I mean, it is a diner so everything going to be the same, but these items are especially delicious. Watch out for the older hostess woman with the glasses and the hair made of straw, she's kind of moody. Late night waitresses are the most friendly and are willing to strike up a conversation, just don't go with a bunch of boys who recently turned 21. There's not a smoking section anymore, so I really don't frequent anymore, because it use to be the palce I could go and smoke without my parents finding out, but it's still a nice place to hang out and get a good old fashioned diner meal. Also, the outside it bright chrome with neon red and blue lights, very old-skool.

One of those old fashioned chrome diners serving old fashioned good home cookin' and some other random food lilke gyro's. I've learned the hard way not to order "teriyaki" or stir fry, but if you are looking for potato filling with that nearly fluorescent yellow gravy, this could be the place for you. Service can be a little slow. You will most likely be the youngest person there if you are under 65 most days. Lots of kinds of pie. One odd thing - visited one time with friends and every dish had something else in it - the spaghetti had peas in it, sherbet had chocolate ice cream in it, potatoes had corn. Do they only have one spoon in their kitchen?? Not sure what is going on there.
