I ordered a General Tso's lunch special and it came out literally 3 minutes after I placed/paid for the order. It was obvious that nothing on my plate was prepared fresh, and I could only speculate how long the rice/chicken had been sitting. The chicken was extremely dry and purplish in color. The plate the meal was served on was dirty. There are plenty of better alternatives in State College for quick/cheap/Americanized Chinese food (see Uncle Chens) If you have a really important exam or paper due and you need a great excuse to get an extension, eat here, you'll more than likely get food poisoning and be out of action for a few days.

Average prices, average taste and maybe slightly above-average portions. Not bad, but nothing that stands out.

GROSS! This place lacks any true creativity and culinary passion for the Chinese food. I ordered the Sweet & Sour Pork, I was going to order more, but after seeing this establishment (and the fact it was attached to the Japanese Sushi place next door, my gut said, "We should leave and look somewhere else", but my heart said, "But give this place a try... beside you should never judge a book from it's cover". So my mind said, "OK, we will compromise and order just one dish and if it is good, we will come back again." Sadly, I haven't gone back since. The Sweet and Sour pork was not good. The pork was dried and lacked any flavor and had little to none veggies. In fact, the sweet & sour sauce was gave the pork flavor, but I was so looking forward to biting into that tender crispy pork, which would give the dish it's depth and savoriness. But no. So that's my take on it. It is unfortunate that I am judging this place based on this one dish, but how can you get Sweet and Sour Pork so wrong? So my search continues.

This was some of the worst sushi I have ever had. It wasn't fresh and was poorly served. I order from Fuji Jade often and they always present it well even when delivered. Additionally it took them 2 hours from order to delivery. To me that is a bit unacceptable.

They literally just never showed up. Don't even bother wasting your money on this worthless place. I wish I could tell you about their food, but they didn't even let me get there.

Food is extremely salty and the service isn't great, owner is quite stingy about even giving up one extra piece of broccoli. There are so many other better places when it comes to Chinese place, will not go back again.

Hunan wok is the only Chinese food I will get in state college and I've had all of them! I personally recommend to anyone who likes good authentic Chinese food, thumbs up

Good. Probably the best for the $$ in State College. Dinner combos are priced right at $7.25 with fried rice and egg roll or soup or soda. The 3 entree combo is a great value as you get to pick from the more interesting selections. Favorites are pork egg foo young and chicken and shrimp with vegetables. Tried the spare ribs once and they were decent, but a bit short on meat. Egg rolls are good - crispy, but a bit small. Orders are generally ready to go within 10 minutes. Always hot. Comfortable eat in, but no waiter service. Again, nothing special, but very convenient, priced right and generally fresh.

Absolutely horrible delivery process, takes forever and wrong order twice. When i called to complaint they would put me on the phone for 20 min just to figure out whether it was the right or wrong order and maybe they will decide to send the right one that will also take forever to be delivered. When they redelivered it the second time they asked me to pay for it. A joke restaurant!

They just got shut down again today by the health department. Wow! Same owner owned Fuji and Jade, China Dragon, My Tai, 100 degree and paneng.

I have no idea what these other reviewers are talking about - Hunan wok is excellent! If you are going there to eat, make sure you stick to the 3 entree with rice deal for about $6.50. There is a large layout of authentic Chinese entrees - you get to pick three. It is a huge amount of food - and you get a free soup or soda to go with it. I am a graduate student and I often go to lunch with the Chinese people in my department. They say the food is like they eat back in China. I personally have been to China and can second this. So again, I am really surprised the reviews are so bad - I've eaten there for years and never had a bad experience. Maybe the other reviewers were expecting General Tso's or something. Always get the 3 entree and rice thing - the available entree's are different every time and delicious!

I personally think the food isn't that bad and actually pretty good. The lunch special is a pretty good deal $6.50. The lunch special for sushi isn't a bad deal either. I've eaten the sushi a number of times and never got sick. Not the cleanest place in SC. It's a pretty good deal for college students its not expensive and you get a decent amount of food.

Yeah, it's pretty gross. I've tried a couple things there, and I've got to say that their general tso is hands-down the worst I've ever tasted. Plenty of other cheap chinese in the area. Avoid this one. Also, as Brian pointed out, they have been closed multiple times for several health violations. In 2006, they were closed for "chicken kept on the floor" and "dirty and cluttered sinks". extension.iastate.edu/fo…

This is my favorite place to order Chinese in State College. I favor the BBQ boneless ribs, but they've got lots of choices. Not only do I enjoy the food, but it has free delivery and usually only takes about 20 minutes!

I went to Hunan Wok for takeout today. I ordered fried pork but the boss asked me whether I want to try pork with black pepper sauce. She said it's better than the fried pork. I said ok. When I got home I realized why the boss recommended the latter. The pork smells bad, it seems the meat is cooked several days ago...Now my stomach feels really sick... I will never go to Hunan again..

I was on a visit at Penn State University and came across this restaurant. The food was pretty good and price was decent. I asked the manager why the reviews were so bad and she said one of the main chefs quit a while back and they were unable to find a good chef. But I'm glad they finally found one during my stay here.

Once upon a time this place was a five star-er. Not anymore. Many, many years back, I was in town seeing my ex-boyfriend when Hunan Wok first opened its doors. At the time, the food was fresh, tasty while the service was prompt. By the time I moved to State College, it clearly was on its way downhill. To start with, I am not a native of PA. New Englanders have a totally different idea of what "Americanized-Chinese" is, and that includes the infamous chicken fingers smoothed with brown gravy and chow mein. On more than a dozen occasions I would spend a good 30 minutes carefully explaining what I was requesting by asking for "brown gravy" on the side. Yes, I know State College is not in Rhode Island. But I also know, they actually have the said item in question. In the end, I'd usually end up with a strange, sweet and sour substance on the side instead. Ugh. That point aside, the food itself is now totally inedible. Unlike when the joint first opened, my chow mein was more often than not, wilted and browning, my broccoli mushy and the beef, weird and spotty. Totally and utterly gross. We completely stopped ordering from them when my fiancee and I got sick from their fried rice. Really sick. Like, deathly, please kill me sick. That was the last straw. Avoid this place and lastly, avoid both the fake ass Japanese "restaurants" which are owned by the same company/management and serve the same exact nastiness.

There's one word that sums up Hunan Wok: Daaaaaaaaaaaaang. As in "Dang, how did they mess up my delivery order entirely?" Also, "Dang, my food is coated in a frightening layer of MSG and grease." And finally, "Dang, my rear is on fire and there's no Febreeze!" This place was closed down for health violations in 05-06 and for some mind-boggling reason my friends still desire to come here. The food is barely edible and looks even more frightening after sitting in the fridge to become leftovers with a yellow film over all the food. All I can say is that anyone who eats here is expecting a coin flip of whether they survive or not.

They recently started offering some "more authentic" options to appeal to the asian community. Nice try, but what a disappointment. I just wasted my money here. Ordered one of their noodle soups took 2 sips and ordered something else thinking that I just made a bad choice and ordered the wrong thing. That was a mistake because I just ended up wasting more money.

This review is to let vistors know what a dump this place is. Most locals know not to come here. Hunan Wok is quite possibly the worst Chinese food place I have been to. I got sick the last time I tried and vowed to never come here again. A few months after that, hunan was closed down. The Centre daily times (our local newspaper) stated they were closed down a total of three times due to health violations. I can't say if they have cleaned up their act so try at your own risk. I hate to bad mouth a restaurant but I don't want outsiders getting sick while visting this lovely town.

Not the best Americanized Chinese food we all love, but they sure make a good butterfly shrimp.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
