This is a great find for breakfaat, and I'm sure it flies under the radar. I stopped here twice in the last 5 months, the last time being last week. They have an assortment of items on the menu, and are a basic joint. However, the food is prepared very well, they have great customer skills, and the spicy beef sausage......well, let's good luck not swelling up. It's that good. Nice job folks

This place is a hidden treasure. It looks like nothing at all, but the food is absolutely tremendous! The breakfast sandwiches are especially worth raving about. SOOOO good and everything is made fresh to order! There is usually a line on weekends, but they do accept call ahead orders so if you're getting it to go that might be your best option! Love the owner too - he seems to remember anyone who has ever walked in the door!

This one is a no brainer. GREAT people making very good food on an old flat top. The breakfast sandwiches are out of this world. I strongly suggest calling ahead as they get backed up in the mornings but the wait is worth it. Bruce and his wife are great people and are running a perfect morning breakfast stop. Btw, pork roll egg and cheese on a kaiser!

Really good casual place for breakfast for lunch as long as you don't mind sitting close to and talking with your fellow diners. Nice breakfast platters. Lunch is really good too. Fresh, fast and with a smile.

We stopped by on our way from the airport because of reviews on yelp. Everything was delicious and made from scratch. Do not let the appearance fool you into not trying it out. The owners were extremely attentive and pleasant. On a side note they do not serve potatoes or pancakes so if that's your thing then this is not your place. The French toast I had was out of this world. My wife had egg omelets with Italian sausage and she loved every bite of it. The place is a bit hard to find because the GPS dumps you in the middle of the highway. Look for the Sproul bowling lanes. They are next to it.

Best coffee around! Owners are awesome. Good food, great service. Has a regular crowd in am, lots of characters. Love to stop in for coffee and pick up breakfast. Lots of people sitting at counters talking. Just great local place.

A fine place for breakfast. The first word that comes to mind is "throwback". Your small town breakfast nook that plays host to a lot of newspaper holding regulars. 1. Cash only. There is a small newsstand next door that has an ATM. 2. Love the awning in the middle of the restaurant that hangs above the larger communal table that runs down the center. 3. Service is always very good. They make sure you have ketchup, hot sauce and everything you need to enjoy your breakfast. Very polite and welcoming. 4. It was great to see an employee in the back slicing fresh tomatoes. Fresh ingredients are always a good sign. 5. Fresh rolls! 6. Always fun to watch the regular customers and staff interact. 7. Very small food prep/kitchen area. Somewhat fascinating how they get it all done in such a confined area. 8. It did take a little bit longer than expected to receive my order. Most of the customers here though seem to be of the very patient kind. 9. The oldies are played from an old boom box located on the back counter of the restaurant. Pretty sure that I heard the owner singing along as well, he wasn't bad. 10. All of your traditional breakfast offerings including scrapple, a Philadelphia favorite.

Best breakfast in the area! Little place with great food. My girlfriend had a mushroom and pepper omelette which was delicious and I had the scrapple and egg big muff which was very satisfying. The cook/owner was so nice and jovial. He also made us some out of this world sticky buns which he gave to us on the house!(Don't go in expecting free sticky buns lol) This is definitely a great place for breakfast ands atmosphere. We Loved It!

As an O'Hara grad I think the Hungry A has been there since the dawn of time. I used to live right behind it and would go there to get a sausage, egg & cheese. DELISHIOUS! I can't really say anything about anything else at the place because that sandwich is so good I never order anything else! Now that I've moved, I'll still drive 20min just to get one on a lazy morning. The guy and his wife who own the joint are really nice people. I can't say enough good things about the place. As a "Mom & Pop" business I like to support them as much as I can.

I could brainstorm for a lifetime and never conceive of a name like The Hungry A, but the name's every bit as interesting, nuanced, and endearing as this restaurant/community hub. Walked in the doors for the first time and quickly forgot about it being a rainy Monday. I ordered a large coffee, a bacon, egg and cheese sesame bagel, and a sesame bagel toasted with butter. I was handed the coffee right away, and it was excellent. The bagels had a snap to them with every delicious bite, and all of the eggs and bacon were freshly made. There are signs of wear and tear about the place, and vintage signs of bygone eras fill up the walls and create an eclectic ambiance. On the way out, I was handed a menu and told to order ahead on Saturdays because it gets really busy. If you are not in a rush, want to sip on a coffee, read the newspaper, chat with a friend, etc., this place is perfect; if not, call ahead, have your cash ready (no credit cards), and prepare to be a regular--I know I will be!

I just went here a SECOND time at 2 pm. They are open until 3, but apparently they close their grill down at 2. How stupid. I am never wasting my time here again.

Sometimes, it's the little things that matter. This place has a lot going for it that would make it a favorite of mine automatically. It's been around close to 50 years, that's a plus. It's known for great breakfast sandwiches, that's another plus. It has a lunch counter feel to it which I just love. In a world where people think places like Panera Bread and Starbucks are great, I will take these family run places any day. But why is the Hungry A more special than most places? Let me put it to you this way. I wish I could say I'm a regular here, but I'm not. I try to get here every now and then. But my schedule is what it is, and I live in an area where I have a lot of other choices. That's just me. If I lived in this area of Springfield I'd be more of a regular. So why do I bring this up? I can say I've been here a handful of times in my life. Last time I was here before this week was maybe a year ago, give or take a couple months. But when I walked in this week, I swear the owner greeted me with a "Hi Steve." I don't know how he did it. I don't know how he remembered based on maybe one conversation we had a while ago. But I was impressed. But what's important is the food. And in my book, you just can't beat fresh eggs off of a grill that's been in use forever. On top of that, another little thing they do well is when they serve you a sandwich on a bagel, they fold the egg around the bacon and cheese so your sandwich doesn't fall apart when you eat it. That's just smarts that you acquire from years of doing it right. Comfort breakfast at it's best. I will make it a point to stop here more often. It's worth a side trip.

Atmosphere is cool and friendly with a genuine, local feel. However, 90% of the customers sitting here (including me and my gf) have been sitting here for 30 minutes waiting for a breakfast sandwich. It's a Saturday morning and we'd like to start the day - bad choice on our part; might as well hit up Panera. Unacceptable.

The Hungry A is just...okay. If you want breakfast you don't have many choices--french toast or a breakfast sandwich. The food was good enough, but we waited about 20-35 minutes for two bagel sandwiches. I could have understood if the place was packed, but there were maybe five other people in the joint. The place advertises itself as fast and friendly. I'll agree with the friendly part. The owner was super nice, and the wait staff was nice enough. If you're a regular, you'll get a lot of attention, apparently. The decor is pretty dismal, kind of cluttered, and it was freezing in there. I ate with a heavy coat on.

The food was tasty diner style with good value. We stopped here well visiting colleges and the couple who owned the place were really nice. Bruce was excited to talk to us Californians and I ended up with a free shirt to start advertising Hungry A West. Overall a great experience!

One of the best places to get a quick bite in Delco. Bruce is the absolute man making sure everyone is satisfied with their order. I bring my guitar in and play songs for the staff and customers and Bruce always makes sure I'm fed. Top notch quality grub at affordable prices makes this place a win, win!

I love a restaurant with personality and this place has it in spades! This is a family run joint and the owner, Bruce, is incredibly personable. I guarantee he will make you feel welcome. The remainder of the staff is very nice as well. Just a heads up that the place gets busy, especially on Saturday mornings. You're going to wait a few minutes for your sandwich but it will be worth it. Order a very good coffee and you can sip while you're waiting. Note that your first refill is free. A breakfast sandwich here is so much better that the fast food joints that's it's unfair even to compare them. Every order is made from scratch. The first thing that made me smile is seeing the stack of Amoroso's boxes. That's a great start to what will be a fabulous sandwich. BTW- here you can choose a kaiser or a long roll. I highly recommend the long roll. Trust me, I know these things. All the usual fillings are available and I chose sausage, egg and cheese on that incredible long roll. The have this neat trick of folding the fillings inside the egg so it's easier to eat without everything spilling out. They do the same thing with the kaiser. Very cool. This is an OMG, role your eyes and moan kind of sandwich. One bite and you'll understand why it gets so busy. My sandwich and coffee was $7 and change and worth every penny. Cash only. There are other breakfast options available including omelets and platters but sandwiches are by far the most popular. Both of the big fast food chains are just seconds away but for a breakfast sandwich, they don't stand a chance with me.

Did you go to college in the city enjoying those awesome breakfast sandwiches from lunch carts? Did you decide to move out to Delaware County and think those days of enjoying said breakfast sandwiches were over? Well you're wrong! This place brought back those memories and made it even better. The bacon, egg and cheese on a toasted long roll with mushrooms and hot peppers was AMAZING! So simple yet it brought back those nostalgic memories. Great sandwich, great service and even better prices. I will definitely be back!

I used to live right behind this place, so I tried it for breakfast sandwiches out of convenience and on a whim... still might be the best pork roll, egg & cheese I've ever had. Also came on a long roll, which changed the way I saw breakfast sandwiches forever. That's a dramatic statement... but the point is, up until that point I thought the Wawa sizzli was as good as it got (yeah, I was young and stupid). The hours were a little annoying from what I remember, so I never got a chance to try it for lunch, but I went back plenty of times for a quick, easy, delicious breakfast.

Heard this was a great breakfast spot. To me - not so much. On positive side: owners were nice and friendly. Had a good number of sandwich choices. You want a platter? None are listed but they can do it( why no suggestions on the menu?). You want potatoes? No-can-do.Not available. Coffee tastes just so-so and is poured in a Styrofoam cup even if you are eating in.You get one free refill. You want cheddar cheese on your eggs? Sorry - not available. I can understand it is a tradition for locals and seemed to be a hang out for people who are regulars, not as welcoming to newcomers. Gave it three stars for owners, cool coffee shop ambiance, decent sandwich. But as a great breakfast spot with eggs, pancakes, waffles etc. Forget it. There are better choices like Nifty Fifties that do it all.

Tom L.
This is the best breakfast sandwich spot I have found in all my years of having breakfast out. Bacon fat from the cooked bacon which is bottomless is used to cook the egss and the home fries. The service is friendly beyond measure and if you are in more than Twice they will know your name by your third visit. The open early. The milkshakes are made with real ice cream, the eggs are fresh, the honey mustard chicken is great and they do make special orders for sandwiches. Parking is easy and access to highway is good. Not sure if the big sandwich will get through security, but it would be worth the try. Has radio in the background no TV the old posters from shows and movies are more interesting than TV

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 12:30 pm - I've driven past the Hungry A countless times but never entered. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato on wheat bread. Oh - and a cup of black coffee. The cook was busier than a one-legged man in a kicking contest! The two ladies were sweet and courteous. A long table with stools occupied the center of the room with additional seating and stools along the walls. The coffee was excellent and the grilled chicken sandwich was fine. I did not receive an invoice and wasn't sure of the cost. I walked towards the register like a student awaiting his grade for a math test. I received my "grade" after waiting patiently for several customers to pay for their grades er, orders. If you're looking for a frills-free dining experience, this is it.

I ordered a breakfast sandwich that contained the following: hoagie roll, pork roll, 3 eggs and cheese. It would be the first thing I ate all day so therefore I was really hungry. I could have cared less about the decor of the place but it was a little cool to sit on the little bar stools and eat your food. It took about 5 minutes and the lady brought it out to me (you pay after you eat). I didn't know how much it cost but I assumed it would be reasonable considering the location and the building. The food was excellent as well as the sandwich. However, I wasn't quite convinced that they put 3 eggs into my sandwich as it appeared a little light. In my experience 3 eggs and cheese with pork roll is a bit heavier. Anyway, I commented to one of the ladies that worked there that I really enjoyed the food and I would be back again. This was after she asked me how I liked the food. I commented that there are few good places to get breakfast and brunch in Delaware County and that the one deli I used to go to in Springfield was good but charged too much. I then exclaimed that this sandwhich would cost about $6 at that deli (Sleepy Hollow Deli). So I was extremely surprised when one of the ladies rung up my order and it came to $5.83. I couldn't believe the irony! Paying almost $6 for a breakfast sandwhich is WAY too high, especially in Delaware County! It was very good, but I cannot confirm that I will be back again. I should have asked for the price when ordering. Great food and service but too expensive for my taste!

My husband and I stopped in at the Hungry A this morning and were beyond delighted! The signs promise fast, friendly service and that's exactly what we got. I ordered an Eggle (2 egss, mushrooms, and bacon on an everything bagle) and my husband ordered a long roll with eggs and italian sausage. Both meals were absolutely delicious. This gentleman who took our order was personable and funny and made us feel right at home. His wife is the cook and did a superb job. 2 young ladies (daughters??) brought the food to us very quickly so it was served nice and hot. We feel like we've found a wonderful new spot for breakfast food and will definitely be back. Thank you, Hungry A!

Get yourself a real good old fashioned burger, also great for a quick Breakfast Sandwich. BTW Bruce the owner has the best memeory ever, went to High School by there 20 years ago, I walk in and he knows my name even though I have not been to the A in years. Amazing.....

My first Pennsylvania review. This place totally rocks!! I first saw it as I drove by late one night.. and thought what a great name!!! Now I'm totally hooked! It definitely doesn't look like much from the outside but that's it. Once you walk in the door, you are home. It has a counter where you order, and then there are no seats, only stools next to little bars. The owners Bruce and Mickey are a great couple. They definitely make you feel like family. MIckey was totally holding my baby girl while we ate breakfast. Then the food... uh yumm?! TOTAL understatement, its simple, cheap and scrudillyumptious. My wife had the Bigg muff, which is 2 eggs, shrooms and cheese on a English muffin. My daughter had the French toast, 1.25 a slice and melts in your mouth. I had the Special sandwich which was bacon, tomato, cheese and i added egg on a bagel. SOooo good, ya defintely gotta check them out and tell them Joe and co. sent ya!! pics will come later...

Gave it three stars for owners, cool coffee shop ambiance, decent sandwich. But as a great breakfast spot with eggs, pancakes, waffles etc. Forget it. There are better choices like Nifty Fifties that do it all.

Incredible food and service!! The owners are a fun, personable couple who immediately make you feel at home. The food is wonderful, I highly recommend the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich and the grilled sticky bun! Good atmosphere. Definitely worth the stop.

I haven't been to this place in years. I was up early so went in on a Saturday morning for coffee and a sandwich. Coffee was good. Sandwich was light. I guess I'll be back at some point but I won't rush.
