We love Cj's! The food is excellent and the service is great! The setting is upscale casual and inviting. I had the smoked prime rib, out of this world! Was cooked perfectly and wasn't over smoked. They smoke theirs meats in house and you can tell its for real and not an additive. Good drink selection too. I foresee we will be back many times in the future.

Had a really disappointing evening. Date night after mass for hubby and I. First sat at the bar and had a couple of beers...all good. Then we were seated at a table in the bar area...very nice. Waitress came over and took our drink and appetizer order. We ordered the pretzel app...very good. Had another beer. Waitress took our main course order. 45 mins later our meals arrived. Steak was warm..not hot but both of our mashed potatoes and asparagus sides were ice cold. Waitress didn't come back but the hostess saw us motioning for her and came over. Sent back for warming...came back but still cold. Ate the steaks and left the sides. Waitress offered us free dessert but we declined. We'd been there over 2 hours at this point and just wanted to pay and go home. 80 bucks later and left hungry :(. Won't be returning.

Cjs is a small restaurant/pub that you can smell delicious smoked meat two blocks away. They have some of the best pulled pork and bbq ribs in shippensburg.

Slowly this establishment is going down hill. What started off as a fine dining experience has become a rushed, rude, pushy experience which feels like paying premium prices to be slapped across the face. Are you fine dining or a slop house? Servers are too busy trying to make quick money I suppose that our table was barely visited. And when we were it was a quick, quite rude, and rushed dialogue. If you want to charge prices of a 5 star restaurant the catch is you have to act like one....no table cloths or fine plate ware; just sticky tables and dirty chairs. The only Barkeep that made a decent drink was not working so my cocktail was over strong and obviously rushed. I have some advice for anyone reading this....don't waste your money being ignored and eating mediocre food( at best). These types of establishments are a dime a dozen and at much more reasonable fare. I'm From Philadelphia and even the worst restaurants in my area have more to offer then this Place. I realize Shippensburg is a microcosm of college staff and townies who rave about the place but to them My advice....get out more...I believe my biggest gripe is the inappropriate affection displayed obviously with no regard to customers and the general managers lack of any action to stop it. In fact it appeared socializing with his buddies always took precedence over keeping staff in line. Honestly the food isn't as good as a year ago....not by far. My apologies if this appears harsh however I feel robbed by my experience. WAY to expensive especially for a small town and it's obvious that said "fresh" items really mean "frozen but thawed". Get some competent wait staff and some fresh seafood and in 6 months I'll try braving the place one more time. If the level of service is still way below reasonable expectation I may write a blog warning others of my experience(s). The staff is beginning to be reminiscent of Aroogas.....young, careless, and more interested in flirtation and fraternization then giving quality service. Going to the bathroom I actually caught a couple of servers speaking about material of a sexual nature .....joking or not I was offended. I'm a columnist and honestly from the hundreds of restaurants I've frequented I could find PLENTY of negative material to fill a review. Crossing my fingers that someone takes these words to heart. As I mentioned beforehand, I see potential however it is way under realized at this point in time.

So they changed their menu, and it now is more "gourmet." I had the Bang Bang Shrimp entree with a twice baked potato. First off the shrimp are deep fried which is not specified on their menu. I suspect they are deep fried, because they are frozen. They then toss them in the "Spicy Bang Bang sauce," overall the shrimp were hard. The twice baked potato, was cold, and they chop off most of the potato, and scoop out the actually potato, to stuff their "twice baked stuff" into the potato. If you want a good twice baked potato and a full potato go to Kathy's Deli! Overall if you don't want a burger and their chips, go to University Grille, Knutes or somewhere else...

place is pricey. food is good, they have entertainment on Saturdays.... They will overcook all meats but will gladly fix if and only if you let them know. The atmosphere is good Not a bad place if you feel like spending $75 for two people not including any alcoholic drinks.

I have visited CJ's several times since opening day. The quality of the food has improved, and the staff is better trained and attentive. My medium rare burger arrived medium rare these past few visits. David is working hard to make CJ's the best place to eat in Shippensburg, I have seen him at each of my visits. The only reason I hesitate to give 5 stars is that I brought guests to CJ's and a ruben arrived absent thousand island (or russian if you prefer) dressing. She was perfectly satisfied using the house made chip dipping sauce for moisture (supposed to be on the sandwich, was not) . I am a harsh critic, I know. To anyone reading this review. Eat at CJ's!

Traveling alone on business and decided to try CJ's because the desk clerk at my hotel recommended it. I grabbed a seat at the bar and looked over the large selection of draft beers. I decided on a pint of Belfast Black for $5.75 which seemed like a lot for a beer that may have been enjoyable if it had been colder. Looked around the room and it was crowded but hardly anyone was eating. The ones that were eating had appetizers or burgers in front of them. This may have been due to the entree prices which seemed unusually high. I ordered a Californian Burger that had two slices of bacon, Asiago cheese and a slice of avocado. It was undercooked and lacked seasoning. Staff was friendly.

The highly recommended smokehouse pork nachos were nothing to write home about! They were cold, small portion and the cheese was a sauce! Who puts cheese sauce on restaurant quality nachos, trying to match a convenience store? You did! Beer on tap served in a warm glass!! Failed bigtime there!! Would not come back!

Avoid. Avoid avoid avoid. Unless you are a Shippensburg resident and already a regular at the ominously bland establishment that is CJ's restaurant, you would probably rather go to Shipwreck's restaurant down the block. The only reason this place is still open is because Shippensburg is home to about five restaurants in total, one of which is a run down diner and another a sketchy sushi place. The fast food "China Wall" doesn't even count. Unless you don't mind being treated like a total creature, don't go here if you have visible tattoos. That was the least of our problems; I am not so much concerned with older women trying to stealthily take my picture with their bedazzled iPhones as I am with the food and service. They were both atrocious, and that's being generous. The service was slow. It was busy, but water should not take ten to fifteen minutes to come out unless you're drugging me. We asked for napkins. We were given one napkin. That's okay; we love to share. The ribs were just a slab of dry meat drowning in some sort of ketchup-esque sauce. My sauce dinner was mediocre at best. The burger was clearly just a crappy frozen patty on a crappy packaged sponge-bun. Want your burger medium? Hope you like it well done, because that's what you're getting. The fries were also the frozen kind that taste like grainy cardboard. McDonald's has better fries.
(1)
Brian B.
The service was a little slow to start but once the food started coming -- oh my lord! The wait was totally worth it. The fish and chips were incredible. Even the kids chicken tenders were moist and crispy. No corners cut when it comes to the food. If I'm ever in this town again, I'm definitely coming back.

Best Black and Blue burger ... Crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Fish tacos had a fruit pico on top with yum yum sauce. So good!! Worth the stop. Staff was great!! And so was the soft rock music playing in the background.

Came in for some drinks after a wedding. Met the manager because my out-of-state temp license caused some confusion with the bartender. He was really nice and we got it figured out, and my boyfriend and I sat at the bar for about an hour. There was live music, he was great and took requests. This is a really good, affordable place to get some drinks or a meal!

CJ's is AMAZING!! The food is delicious and not your normal boring menu. We visit here often and have a wonderful experience everytime. You MUST get their soft pretzels with beer mustard. No discussion and you're welcome in advance. Anything you order off the menu is fantastic and you will not be disappointed! The hot wings are delicious too. Great beer/wine/cocktail menu. The atmosphere is great as well. CJ's is great for any occasion: date night, special events, or just a place to go when you don't feel like cooking! As for the price which seems to be the negative that everyone says, let's put it this way... it's not McDonald's or Applebee's. You're paying for incredible food at a decent price.

Average food that's too expensive for what it is. Seriously, $13 nachos that taste like canned ingredients? No thanks

There aren't many places in Shippensburg, so it's good that CJ's is decent. Burgers were tasty and on the deluxe end of the spectrum -- which is good, because prices are on the deluxe end, too. Steak salad was only reasonable. The "shredded asiago" is a light sprinkle of the very dry, stiff, pre-shredded store-bought version of asiago, which is only barely asiago. (Advice for CJ's: Buy a block of good asiago and grate it yourself. It'll be tastier, more spoil-proof, and less expensive.) Service was very good, quite friendly and efficient. We'll probably go back because...There aren't many places in Shippensburg, and CJ's is decent.

Granted Shippensburg lacks decent restaurants but to be honest this isn't any better. The atmosphere is loud, the food, while tasty, took forever and is overpriced. Our waiter passed our table several times turning a blind eye to our empty drinks and never checked on our table after the food was delivered.

Very nice sports bar atmosphere yet seems to be pretty family friendly! Stopped in on our way up Rt11 with the grandson and looking for someplace to get some lunch. Getting out of the car I commented, "I smell charred meat!" NOW COMING FROM A CARNIVORE, THIS IS A GREAT COMPLIMENT! We were greeted at hostess station immediately and seated.Appetizer was a nice sized helping of fresh warm tortilla chips and salsa that had just a little kick and nice chunks of tomato and peppers. We enjoyed the Vegan Panini, Cameron's 1/2# burger, and Bullhog (pulled pork & brisket). All sandwiches were of goodly size and excellent taste & quality. Their BBQ sauces are quite tasty. The house made spiced chips were some of the best we have ever had and the dipping sauce for them had just a slight kick. A pretty nice selection of draft beers added to the enjoyment! We had no room for dessert so I can't comment on those selections (maybe next time). Next time we are Shippensburg way, we will hit CJ's!

Awesome. My wife and I needed a quick lunch on a long car ride and while she said "I don't want to be set back an hour just for lunch", and I want what I eat to be good.....so we came here. Food was perfect. Two great burgers. Very clean and attractive atmosphere. If we are ever nearby we will be back. Awesome

So after reading a few reviews my husband and I decided to give this spot a chance. As Philly and NJ/NY transplants, our taste buds crave metropolitan flavors. Overall, the actual environment definitely reminded me of home and was not typical Central PA. Very nicely done inside. Server was gracious and attentive. And when my burger was wrong, the manager brought me a new one (see below). As for the food - I gave it three stars because it was better than most places but lacked seasoning. I had the lobster Mac & cheese - it was on the bland side. Had to add salt and pepper. I had a burger - had to send it back since it came well done (and I ordered medium). As someone else commented, they used asiago cheese on my burger (California burger i believe) that looked like it can from Kraft instead of a good Italian deli and a microplane. The beers on tap were great - decent selection. We may come back but for bar time with a small plate or three (also known as appetizers) but soup to nuts dinner for $75....I would rather cook at home or go to Shipwreck where the food was tastier.

I've been to this restaurant many times and everything that I have eaten was very good. I traveled coast to coast for work and have eaten at many different types of restaurants. I have dined in and ordered takeout enough times from this place to have a pretty good feel for it. The food is very hit or miss. Sometimes awesome, sometimes downright disgusting. The burgers are a safe bet, but the chef seems to sometimes not taste his/her own ideas. Might seem good on paper but not to the taste buds. Even some classics are lackluster. Ordered the ahi tuna once. It tasted as if it had been soaked in household cleaner - something definitely wrong there. Asparagus is always overlooked or undercooked. I have yet to have good service here. Often feel rushed out or unwelcome. Was given a check after only two beers. Got the message. Basically, this place needs to work out some problems, but the Shippensburg burger is delicious, so I'll probably try my luck again.

Not great but not bad. Went here for lunch, I had the Smokehouse burger, came with brisket on top along with American cheese and onion straws, pretty good except brisket was a little dry. Another member ordered the brisket tacos and that was their comment - good but a little dry. Another member had the spinach mushroom wrap which as ok, last member had the turkey melt panini.

Modern, NYC-chic meets Ship = CJ's. I met a friend for an early dinner. We shared the CAB Sauteed Filet Tips - these were super tender and flavorful with wild mushroom demi glace and topped with blue cheese. The spinach salad had really fresh ingredients and Jordan's Mac&Cheese was more like an Alfredo casserole with three kinds of cheese, pancetta, peas and panko. Amazing. Service was attentive and friendly without being annoying. I will definitely return when I'm back in the area.
