Cute, quaint, and local. They have a great smoothie and tea selection, and monthly art to go with First Friday in Scranton.

Northern Light Espresso Bar is as good as it gets. I was here this past weekend and really have to rave about how good this place is. I've been to a bunch of coffee houses all over the Philly area, but... the coffee here blows everything I've had right out of the water. The caramel lattes will not disappoint you. The man working was extremely nice. Place itself is really cute inside, quiet and relaxing. A definite Scranton must try.

Walking in while still on California time, it reminded me of a place on the south side of Berkeley, although it could really be any hipster coffee place in Berkeley. Just had a cup of tea and a bagel. It was rather a DIY set-up for the bagel, and not really worth the price. Nice view of the piazza in downtown Scranton, and the campanile. Will probably drop in at some point during my next three years of school here to have a cappuccino, and will add an update then.

This is a great little cafe in Scranton and a really nice place to meet up and chat for a while. There are plenty of couches and tables where you can sit around and relax for hours. This is also a great place to study if you're a student at any of the nearby colleges. I can't speak for the coffee since it's been years since I've had it, but I recently had their chai and it was pretty good. Their prices are pretty steep, but really on par with starbucks or any other independent coffee shop. Overall, it's a solid place and really a good place to have in Scranton.

    Glad it exists in Scranton!

Cute cafe in the courthouse square of Scranton. I didn't try the coffee because I was already overly caffeinated, but I had the ham, dill, and gouda sandwich, which was pretty decent, if a little dry. I didn't have any of the service problems that other reviewers have mentioned. There were 2 counter people and one guy was very friendly and helpful, and the other guy was sort of surly and indifferent. All in all, nice atmosphere, free wifi, and beautiful view of the courthouse across the street.

When traveling I try hard to visit locally owned businesses and generally find they are rock solid, except here. Jeez . . . Terrible coffee, Yes! Terrible service, Yes! Rude as hell counter staff, Yes! Would I recommend, No! The opinions expressed are mine alone and are not intended to assert any fact.

The positives: the place has a nice vibe and there was a decent selection of baked good, salads, and bagels. The raspberry scone was excellent. I tried the pumpkin chai tea. It was very good, a little sweet but not so much to ruin it. The negatives: the service was painfully slow even with two people behind the counter and only a few people in line. The barista touched the rim of my mug a few times. This is a real pet peeve of mine. Will restaurant workers please stop touching the rims of my glasses and mugs? 3 stars...for now.

It's really nice to go to a local coffee shop with people from the nearby universities hanging out. There are obviously regulars and people seem to know one another. I've never been disappointed by anything I've had there...BUT, the service is lackluster. I just wish they were a little nicer. Incidentally, there is always interesting art on the walls. See, the ambiance of the place is fantastic. I really want to like it, but I just can't give it the five stars I would like to give it. Be nicer, people!

  • Lauren S.

I spent a total of 5 minutes here, and it made me want to move to Scranton, PA. It was the absolute BEST soy latte I have ever had--SO tasty. The ambiance was cozy and casual without being "too hipster." I will dream about this place for months. :)

  • Darius D.

Scranton's attempt at a hipster staffed coffee joint with free wifi. Fantastic location and close to Radisson. Perhaps the smallest breakfast sandwich ever and expensive. The sandwiches and wraps are healthy and hearty though. Coffee has an unusual flavor. (I ordered my usual triple shot Americano.) Overall, the bar is set low for Scranton so this is fine. Go elsewhere though if you want to eat a meal. This is just for a snack and a coffee.

  • Olivia G.

This is a great café to go to. The tea variety and flavors are amazing. As is the staff. The salads are very tasty. There is one with feta cheese and it is delicious! if you want to buy tea, they put in a baggy to take (these are loose teas not tea bags). On the go or sit and eat. Thumbs up!

  • Star T.

A lovely spot to sit a while and have a cup of delicious coffee or tea. The ambience is wonderful and you never feel rushed to leave even after hours. A great find here in Scranton.

Question: Why would a coffee shop (assuming the owners want a viable business) only have 1 person attending to customers on a Monday morning at 7:30 AM? It's Monday, people regularly drink coffee in the morning, you are 200 ft from the Hilton, (more walk in traffic). You had at 7:30 AM 7 people in line waiting for coffee, only 1 attendant and NO muffins or any other food out (e.g. more revenue). You lost my sale of not only coffee this morning but two organic salads. That was about 15.00 + in revenue that turned around walked out the door and spent my money at Starbucks at the Hilton. Not Smart...

I'm new to the area and was looking for a place to have a relaxed, vegetarian-friendly meal and this place fit that to a T. There were two employees on the counter and both were giving me advice on what to order and cracking jokes, so I definitely didn't experience the service trouble some people reported on. I was with a friend, and all together we got a mint tea, an americano with flavor shot, a mediterranean wrap, a southwest wrap and a huge chocolate chip cookie to split - and it came to about $21. Both wraps were good and the cookie was perfect - all gooey and crispy on the outside without being burned. I overheard one worker discussing with another customer that they just hired a full-time baker and that everything but the bagels are freshly made or brought in daily from other local places. There's a whole page of teas to choose from and my americano tasted great. (I tried a shot of their toasted almond mocha flavor in it.) About 1/4 of their sandwiches/wraps/salads menu were veg friendly and the mediterranean was even vegan, so that made me happiest of all. I'm living a ways out of town, but I definitely plan on going back next time I'm in downtown Scranton to work my way through trying some more tea and espresso drinks.

I have been to coffee shops all over the country and this one definately holds its own. Well informed, knowledgable staff. Friendly. And some of the brews here are just terriffic. Nice to see there are so good establishments still in the downtown area. Keep up the good work guy!

    (4)
  • Pete B.

Really nice place run by really nice people. And really nice tea. It's also the only nice thing in Scranton, but that's another whole topic.

Northern Light has a lot going for it. It's situated in the downtown area in a nice building with lots of natural light. It has a good amount of space and varied seating areas for relaxing, for reading or for reminiscing with old friends over a drink. Northern also utilizes local foods in their sandwiches and they roast their beans locally. However, those roasts are hit or miss. I'm pretty partial to the espresso roast. It's complex and unique, where Starbucks' espresso is much less compelling. But many of the coffee roasts are less interesting and I'm yet to taste a smooth roast among them. As others have noted, speed is not anyone's forte here. I've never been in a hurry any time I've visited, though I imagine if I ever was in a hurry I might be frustrated by the slow service. That said, most of the baristas are friendly and seem professional enough behind the counter.

    (4)
  • DJ W.

The drinks and baked goods have always been fantastic, and I'm usually partial to the vanilla chai. The only downside is that, at times, it feels like you have to know someone behind the counter to be afforded a cheerful experience.

Cool spot. The vegan chickpea wrap is delicious.

I am a Starbucks fan and gold card holder so to rate another coffee shop high is rare. Fast friendly service and consistent product taste are important an NL gets it done. Plenty of seating and reading material.

The coffee is OK nothing to really brag about. I am currently sitting outside at 7:26 in the morning in the blistering heat. The two girls that are working "snubbed" me as I was walking in the building saying in a rude tone "we aren't open" This is not my first time coming here. The other gentleman that work behind the counters seem put off and bothered by their job. The yogurt is my favorite. The first time it was a raspberry blend and when I asked the women whAt kind of blend it was the second time she said I on early have no idea it's just yogurt and some type of smoothie stuff. WOW real professional. Well as I sit out here in the blistering heat the two employees that were outside smoking in front of the building go in. Now wouldn't you tell everyone who is sweating profusely waiting to go in that you were open now? No! They still did not, I went in grabbed my coffee and was shunned basically because I didn't get coffee. The atmosphere is very calming, I'm almost sleeping as I'm writing this here. The lighting is so so could be a bit brighter. Difficult to read my book. All in all I won't be using this as a hang out spot. I'll get my over priced yogurt $4.50 a pop and go.

This was my first visit to norther lights, amazing coffee, great atmosphere (very cozy), will most definitely come back.

In town for work and needed to kill some time before my flight. This was a great coffee shop. Loved the atmosphere, style of the place and music. They have wifi and comfortable seating if you planning to spend a few hours there. I had a cup of tea and a bowl of soup. The had a really nice selection of pre made sandwiches and salad. The vegetarian chili soup I had was so good. I really enjoy finding places like this when I'm on the road. Quaint, quiet, relaxing and great food & drink options.

  • Brian S.

I camped out here for a 'work from home' day. Excellent, polite service and very good espresso. Plenty of tables/seats as well. They have standard 2 and 4 top tables, 2 couches and an upstairs seating area.

  • Eat NeP A.

Wanted to try this place but they don't have almond milk. Someone in my party has a soy and lactose allergy. I said something and they weren't very kind in their response "we can't carry it all." Ok, dude, just providing feedback as to why I'm walking out. Off to Zummo's...they have bigger coolers, I guess.

What coffee shops should be. Trendy place with nice ambiance and knowledgable baristas. Good wifi and good couches. Wow, what a gem.

  • Kevin R.

Nice coffee shop in an otherwise sad little downtown area. There always seems to be a decent crowd here. The pastries are hit or miss, maybe it depends on the time of day. Plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy a cup of your favorite hot caffeinated beverage.

I grew up in Scranton and when I return to visit family this is my 1st stop. The coffee here is sine qua non.

i visited the place. not my usual place for coffee. but been there many time before. saw friends that is always nice. ordered a expresso for $3.65 plus $1.00 tip ,it sucked. so brought back to ask if it was what i ordered? that sated it was. no offer to help. so i seem to be stuck with bitching about on yelp & never to return!!!!!!

I've only been to Northern Light a few times, as my daily routine does not take me near central Scranton. I was very happy when I was nearby and decided to stop by for a coffee! It was super cozy and had a nice atmosphere when I walked in. However, I was extremely disappointed to find that they only had two kinds of coffee, LOTS of tea though. I was also annoyed when one of the men behind the counter gave me an attitude whenever I had a question. I am Big on good customer service and this place does not have it. I daresay the local Starbucks baristas at least give you a friendly Hello when you walk through the door! If you like warm, cozy, cute cafes, with plenty of tea but not so much coffee or personal warmth, this is the place for you. If you're not a tea totaler and have an aversion to rude baristas, then this is not the place for you.

This place is in Scranton. SCRANTON. They have a Keys Van Der Weston Mirage. in S.C.R.A.N.T.O.N. Yea, that Scranton. Anyways, this place was a delightful, much needed stop during a 16 hour drive from Chattanooga to Syracuse. I had a slammin' shot of their house espresso blend that left me keyed up for the rest of the drive, but just incase I walked out with a cup of their drip as well. The cafe itself had a nice aesthetic, clean with plenty of natural light. I little cluttered but still a solid place to hang for a minute if you're ever unfortunate enough to find yourself stuck in Scranton. I'd definitely stop back in, although hopefully I wont be making that drive again anytime soon. Brutal.

Skip Starbucks! Support local. This is a very relaxing, charming coffee shop. Perfect for studying or down time. The baked goods, salads, and wraps are always delicious. The drinks are always fabulous. My favorite is the spiced chai tea latte. There are two levels - plenty of seating.

    (5)
  • Nikki K.

Their chai tea lattes are amazing. I haven't found one nearly as good anywhere else - and believe me, I have tried! Definitely worth the expense!

Very relaxing vibe and friendly people. Not like a corporate Starbucks. Lights has a laid back feel. Oh. good coffee and drinks too.

  • Chris W.

The Good: Great coffee! Awesome decor and lighting. Board games. Comfy seating. The Bad: Stereotypical coffee shop music. I think one of the employees had an ipod on, but it sounded like they were streaming Starbucks' music channel. The employees were a little snobby. I ordered a regular cup of coffee and the woman at the register made it seem like I was pulling her teeth. Then she gave me a dirty look because I didn't tip her for the poor service? Stay home if you can't handle working, princess. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd consider grabbing some coffee. Its better than Starbucks, but I rather not deal with hipster cookie cutters just for some coffee.

    (2)
  • Michael B.

Yep still awesome. The 5 stars are because somebody was paying attention... They have BAGELS! The prices of the sandwiches and salads are lower too. Pretty much a perfect cafe and Scranton is better for Northern Light existing.

    (5)
  • Jenny M.

I drank coffee here before it was cool.

    (5)
  • Sean M.

The coffee is ok here. They definitely have the best chai tea in town. I will give them that... The location and interior are both excellent. I hate to say this but some of the staff come off, dare I say, ostentatious/pretentious. Lighten up guys! :)

Great espresso. Upscale coffee bar imitating trendiness in downtown Scranton! Prices are average for the product.

  • Colin P.

Stopped in for the first time in a long while for a quick bite. They make a big deal about the roasters they use, but I was unimpressed with the specific coffee I tried. I found it to be extraordinarily weak; it delivered on its "tropical notes" but lacked body. The same can be said of the staff. They have self-serve coolers full of prepackaged lunch items from Caravia, a local Italian deli/caterer. I was a little put off by the $7.50 price tag on a self-serve prepackaged salad, but it was overloaded beyond expectations with baby spinach, dried cherries, sort-of-candied pecans and a heap of goat cheese, making it well worth it. I'm pretty sure the shop has changed hands once or twice, and feels a lot less "Montana" than it used to. Back then, their loft area served as my afternoon escape from work. It's a nice place to spend time - very easy to forget you're in Scranton. I once found an egg-sized piece of eggshell - basically the whole thing - in one of their muffins. Cute.

Friendly staff, a pleasant interior, and outdoor seating makes Northern Lights a nice Starbucks alternative. They are a little pricy, but offer a loyalty program for repeat customers.

Northern Light is a coffee shop teacher's (i.e., one who likes to grade tests and lesson plan in coffee shops) dream. I am in-cafe Yelping right now to tell you why! Space: 5 stars. So many tables and couches, even on a Saturday afternoon. However, I could lose my table vulturing skills if space was always this plentiful. Outlets: 5 stars. They are *everywhere.* Cambridge, take note! Drinks: 4.5 stars (pending my usual soy latte test). The gingerbread chai is delicious. The chocolate chai is delicious. The tiny cups of free hot chocolate and whipped cream because the barista made extra and gave it to us...also delicious. Food: 4.5 stars. The cheese danish and apple cinnamon danish are delicious. The other guy across the loft must think so too--he's eating three in a stack like pancakes. Music: Nice and mellow, lulling me into the feeling of napping amongst a thousand baby angels fanning me with their wings (that might also be the sugar from all my beverages talking).

This is the place to go for coffee in downtown Scranton. You might just hear the locals refer to it as "Northern Light's" People from Scranton/NEPA have a horrid habit of adding an S to the end of business names. Northern Light is a cozy little espresso bar located on courthouse square. They offer some amazing beverages. The Baristas are all awesome folks. If you aren't sure what you want, just ask one of them to recommend something. They have never steered me in the wrong direction. As far as hot beverages go, I really enjoy the Caramel Latte, Pixie Mate, The Hot Chocolate, and if I am in the mood for some strong coffee and high caffeine-The Red Eye. As far as cold/iced beverages go, I like the ICED Caramel Latte, the blended chai teas, and the Mocha or Green Tea Ice Rage. Try some of their baked goods, I had a cranberry orange muffin there a while back and it was amazing. I also always enjoyed their chocolate chip cookies. Did I mention they have free Wi-Fi?

I appreciate that this place exists but I have had much better coffee in my time. It's a cute shop and the staff are friendly, I was just a big suprised a large iced coffee ran me over 3 bucks. Maybe it's just me?? I'll still go here whenever I'm in downtown Scranton I just don't think the quality is consistent with the price.

  • Anthony J.

ahhh nothern light! I've been going there for years now and I've seen renovations, different baristas, and just about every kind of person inside over time. They serve a heavy bodied solid drip brew and usually always have a few different roasts to choose from, which is nice. They brew mostly Gimme coffee, but I've also seen Cafe Kubal on drip. For espresso and cappuccinos, this is the place to go. Just awesome. The baristas are pretty much all coffee geeks and they have a Mirage espresso machine in house.

The best espresso I've had since New Zealand, and that's saying a LOT. Who knew?! Such a cool hipster place too, if I lived in Scranton I'd hang out there all the time.

Great chai tea and baked items! And a very cool atmosphere. T-shirts are also sold in-store.

Having been a handful of times now, I feel like I can give Northern Light a proper review. Of course, I should say, that the place is pretty nice and all that but I'm a coffee aficionado, so I've got to review it based in large part (90%) on the quality of the espresso drinks. I should start with the fact that these people are devotees to the God of American coffee, David Schomer, who's Vivace (in Seattle; espressovivace.com ) is the best place for coffee I've ever been. As such, they use his techniques, tampers and even have an espresso machine made by Kees VanderWesten, which is essentially like a Rolls Royce. On my recent trip to Michigan I stopped in both going and coming and both times I had an Americano, and the first time I had an iced white mocha as well. All the drinks were excellent. I wouldn't say transcendent, but really, really solid. In Seattle, this place would get a 4, because there are so many amazing places there, however, in Scranton, PA? This place is a 5. Essentially east of Washington State this place is a 5. I can only say that this place makes me stop in Scranton every time I drive across the country and that can only be a good thing.

Love this place. They have yummy drinks, great snacks and nice, healthy packaged lunches. I love getting a hot chocolate which is as big as my head and sitting on the comfy sofa all afternoon laughing out loud as I read their Calvin and Hobbes book. I also love how they support local businesses and events with their large display / community boards.

  • T. Axel J.

Great coffee and espresso drink selection, with some baked goods and pre-made salads and sandwiches for a quick lunch. Atmosphere is relaxing, as are the seating arrangements. My favourite place to stop for coffee in Scranton.

  • Melissa F.

As far as coffee places in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area go, Northern Light is pretty good. I'm a fan of their drip coffee and they have a great chai selection. The Baristas know what they're doing, can properly steam milk, and even do a little latte art. I appreciate that. Two gripes: it's a little expensive (I once paid $4.75 for a small mocha with peppermint syrup, plus change for the parking meter), and something about the vanilla latte tastes a LITTLE bit funny to me. But other than that, it's a good morning coffee stop.

As an establishment, Northern Light Espresso Bar offers a large sitting area (two floors), a beautiful view of the Courthouse Square, an art gallery, and just about any drink desirable. Northern Light Espresso Bar is true to its name, primarily offering espresso based drinks such as cappuccino's and latte's. Because they cater to a very wide demographic, chai's and blended drinks (smoothies, shakes) are also served, as well as various baked treats. Many people come to sit for hours while reading or doing homework, others come and go. For this reason Northern Light is a good place to become acquainted with the city as a new-comer. Northern Light cafe is a true Third Wave coffee shop. They pull triple-ristretto espresso and love to geek about coffee. However, because of customer demands, the cafe offers 20oz drink sizes and promotes what many may call 'sissy drinks' (powder chai's, sweet flavored lattes, etc.). Regardless of your 'usual,' Northern Light Espresso Bar will probably suit most of your drink needs, and serves, by far, the best espresso around. Note: I am currently employed by Northern Light Espresso Bar

Yummy Double Dirty Chai with Soy. They have games to play and a lot of personality. I beat Scot at Chess and we put a decoration on their diy tree.

This place is great! I love the loft. Me and my girlfriend go here often. She studies and I read and use the free wifi to spend all my money on things i don't need. I have yet to have a bad drink here. There are tons of books and magazines to read of you forget your own. Great relaxed attitude. Great place to go and mellow with some friends. They have some small acoustic acts here from time to time. I recommend Norther Lights for all you coffee fixes!
