Based on the reviews here, I tried this place for the first time; I usually go to Chicano's. Certainly the decor is nicer than Chicano's, and Italo's has a full bar. The food, however , does not compare. I ordered the burrito mojado which I often get at Chicano's and although it was probably a third bigger in size, the taste was fairly bland and it was loaded with cheese and rice. I also had the spicy, cheesy bean appetizer which was also not spicy. My lunch mate had the chimichanga which was not deep fried but in a soft tortilla. Overall the food was similar to what you'd get in a chain....I'll definitely be going back to Chicano's.

Had lunch there today (Sunday) and it was great. It's the third time I've eaten there and it still doesn't disappoint. It's very reasonably priced, large portions and great tasting mexican food.

Chimichanga and rice is phenomenal, best guacamole I've ever had, and we are obsessed with the al pastor tacos clari. Easily my favorite mexican food. Easily.

The best Mexican food in the area. Absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommend going here, getting the guacamole, a dos Equis, and a monster burrito that you cannot finish.

I really enjoyed my food. I suggest ordering the burrito when you are hungry because it will definitely fill you up. The staff is absolutely friendly and happy. Prices are great for the amount of food you receive. $8 for the burrito but it was pretty much two meals.

I visited for the first time last week! Service was nice. It was a little slow to get the check when the restaurant was not busy. I got the chicken tacos! They were very good. Not as good as Chicano's, but still very good. The co-pilot got a burrito with pork and pineapple. I tried some, and it was amazing!!!! Good location. They take credit and debit. Clean and nice inside. Prices were decent.

Got fish tacos from here for the first time today and I probably won't be back. They were loaded with cole slaw and another cream sauce (a sickening amount - literally) on top of too much tilapia. The price of 3 fish tacos was $9.10 with tax. 2 stars because everyone that worked there was really friendly and so if you like rather unhealthy options you may enjoy.

Food was absolutely delicious! My waiter couldn't speak English very well and my girlfriend who's also a waiter was not impressed with there experience. But besides that it was enjoyable

Went here for lunch. Not a fancy place but the food was tasty and the portions were large We got the Tinga Huaraches We probably could have split one. Chips were thin but dense and crispy. Needed a little salt but the Salsa was spicy I would have given 4 stars but beverages were limited. Iced tea came in a can. They did have bottled water though. I would like to see margaritas and beer on the menu in the future ;)

Executive Summary: This place is amazing. I stopped in for a late Saturday lunch. I heard the place was good, but I was led astray in the past. Italo's didn't disappoint. The food was amazing. Our waitress came over immediately and took our drink order. I drink water because I don't like soda. I often feel like my server thinks I'm gonna be a problem, so it starts off on bad foot. Not here, when I asked for a refill, she brought a pitcher. We ordered basic burritos (I got steak, my nine year old got chicken). My son didn't want peppers or onions. No problem, they actually make burritos the way YOU want them. The meal started with typical chips and salsa. Next came our burritos. We were laughing at the size. They were enormous. They looked the part (ie, not frozen). Most importantly, the plates weren't hot. That's right, they weren't microwaved. One bite and I was amazed. There was a ton of flavors. I'm a 200lbs guy who can eat. I could only finish half of it. The bathrooms were clean. The restaurant was clean. The staff is engaging. I can't find a negative. I think my bill was only $15.60, I know it was only $21.00 with the tip (hey, it's still 30%). For that, I got lunch for myself and my son on Saturday and brunch for the two us today. You couldn't do that at Taco Bell.

I have been here 5 times and the first 4 were extraordinarily delicious authentic Mexican experiences. We thought we hit a gold mine. Well... The last and final experience was more than terrible. After telling friends/family how awesome it was here, we went with 9 people for a birthday dinner. We ordered our food... But it didn't come for the next hour and a half. The waitress would say she was sorry in an apathetic tone if we would ask if there was a problem. Honestly we just wanted the truth no matter what the problem was. Kitchen fire, chef disappearance, whatever. The food arrived finally, cold. Oh and only half the table was served their meals. The others came about 15 mins later. The waitress barelyyyy apologized and said they were "busy with take out orders" and the owners/managers never approached us. People who came in after us ate and went while we were sitting there. While we were leaving the restaurant, the staff laughed and giggled as they watched us leave. How embarrassing for both them and us, since we raved about the place. We weren't rude but we will never be returning, especially with other Mexican restaurants within blocks of this one.

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Scranton. It has a mix of authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex. If you eat in, the salsa (served with chips) is amazing! If you like guacamole, order it (can also be made spicy); it's creamy and delicious. I haven't had anything here that isn't great, but my favorites are: huarache ranchero, gorditas, sopes, wet burrito, the regular torta, and the chimichanga. If you like spicy, I definitely recommend getting it hot (the restaurant serves green sauce and RARELY has red). I always order the chicken, but I've heard the other meats are great too. Best part about the place is it's cheap and the portions are HUGE! The owners are also some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. My born and raised Mexican friend just relocated to San Diego and said she misses this place! Don't miss out on this gem of a restaurant!

We eat here often. I love their spicy guacamole burritos quesadillas. I haven't ever had anything I didn't like. The staff is friendly & the Resturant is clean. But the food is delicious!!!

Mixed feelings. We (my two friends, brother, and I) came here for a mid afternoon (2 PM) lunch. We picked our seat after the waitress acknowledged us walking in. She asked if we were okay at a table near the bar or if we wanted to move elsewhere. We confirmed that we were okay where we were. We then sat there for the next 5 minutes or so waiting for her to come back with menus and take our drink orders. Three of us ordered coffee and everyone got waters. After trying the coffee we all agreed that it had been sitting a long time and was burned. We then ordered our food and waited for a little over 45 minutes. They gave us some chips and salsa but there was never a reason why or an apology. My friend who was only drinking water waited 20 minutes for a refill. When we did get our food it was warm and delicious but my brother and I both ordered flautas with tinga (ground beef) and we got chicken instead. My other friend had tinga tacos and got it. We didn't ask to prevent delaying things further. The food was good as I mentioned but the service was poor especially considering we were the only ones who ordered food then.

I've mostly been disappointed by Mexican restaurants in the Scranton area and I think I've been to all of them except Taqueria Oaxaca along Cedar and Taco Bandito in N Main Ave. I've been to Italo's only once-- and asked the waitress for their best dish. She recommended the Enchilada de Mole Poblano and it was among the best mole I've ever tasted. Not the watery, overly sweet mole that you find in some other places in the area, this version was as good as any I've had. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to return to try their other dishes because I've also been busy exploring other restaurants in the area.

Very disappointed. After reading many reviews, we thought this would be very good. Not only was the food fair at the very best, waited more than an hour and a half for our meals. Our 8 meals came out two at a time over a 15 minute period. By the time the last meals came out, half our party finished theirs. No explanation why this happened, and the staff didn't seem to care in the least. Again, very disappointed.

Free salsa & chips. Large portion for a good price. The burrito is my favorite and huge! You can totally cover 2 meals with it. The torta (Mexican sandwich) is also very, very large.

Food was good. Service was horrible. Our visit was almost 2 hours long with the food taking 45 minutes to reach us for 2 Chimichangas and a plate of cheese sticks. I did note that only one other table was ahead of us awaiting food. It also took 20 minutes for our server to bring us our bill after she took a couple of plates away. I will not be making a return visit.

Italo's Mexican Restaurant located close to downtown Scranton is family owned and operated offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have been in business for 14 months and serve mainly Mexican, but also offers cheese steaks, soups and salads, hamburgers and gyros, yes gyros! The dinning area includes around 15 tables and a huge beautiful bar, but they don't have a liquor license. Feel free to BYOB. The waitress was very friendly and offer dining suggestion after finding out we had a vegetarian onboard. She offered to put our Modello's on ice and then suggest an Eggplant Enchiladas Plate which was not on the menu and I went with the Enchiladas De Mole Poblano Plate. The order was place and minutes later she brought out the chips and salsa. The chips were hot and super thin and the salsa was finely chopped and had a bit of a bite, Both were homemade and good! At this point, I asked for some guacamole and she was happy to oblige. The guacamole is made to order and took a couple of minutes. It was also yummy. After speaking to the owner's son for several minutes and finishing my second beer, the two plates were served. Both looked fabulous and came with rice and beans. I dug into the mole, OMG! Smooth, creamy and sweet! I tried the eggplant and was quit impressed with the flavor. The rice and beans were pretty standard, but think the beans may have been made with lard and not fit for any vegetarian, I enjoyed them and she eat around them. We didn't ask? Fulfilled once again it was time to seek the after dinner sweet. I asked about the Flan, but the waitress suggested El Beso De Italos (Photo attached) and glad she did. Bananas cooked in brandy with ice cream and whipped cream on top. Muy Bueno! Our whole dining experience was relaxing, tasty and enjoyable. I would highly recommend. Atmosphere*** Clean, Upgrades Continue Service**** Accommodating. Great Suggestion Food**** Tasty, Plentiful, Quality Value**** Reasonable, Complimentary Dishes As always, Support Local Dining!

This is the best Mexican restaurant in Scranton. The food is much better than Chicano's & Giribaldi's (or whatever it's called). The price is also very fair. I'm really surprised that this place isn't packed. They now serve alcohol if you are wondering. They also serve American fare as well, such as hamburgers, fries, etc..

Real Mexican food there are other Mexican restaurants that think they serve Mexican food and all they are just a fancy taco bell. If you want real Mexican go to Italos

Italo's came on a recommendation from a friend and we were very happy we went. We had a great meal in a friendly setting with a mariachi style musician performing near our table. Definitely the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the Scranton area.

Best Mexican restaurant in the Scranton / Wilkes Barre area. I've travelled all over the world for 28 years, including Puebla Mexico where they invented Mole. This place stacks up right there with it. If you like genuine Mexican food (not chain Mexican), you will love this place. Great staff, super nice. The guy who gave it one star, is a moron. He should try Chi Chi's or any other chain mexican place if the definition of a good Mexican restaurant is having Margaritas...

Good food. Clean. Friendly service I'd go here anytime! The food is great and the portions are huge. You're treated like royalty. The rest rooms are clean. Street parking sucks, but we've never had to walk very far from the door. Just our opinion.

Went on a week night. No one in the joint. Very friendly but the food was disappointing. More authentic than most but the overall quality of the food was sub par. We were hoping for a better experience.

The most awesome Mexican food you can get in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Area. The staff is very friendly and will carry a conversation with you. I usually get a steak burrito. The portions are HUGE and the food tastes great! I stopped in today and got Steak Tostados, and I liked them just as much as the burrito. Prices are cheap and definitely ask for the Salsa Verde (Green Sauce) it definitely has a kick to it!

Excellent food, fantastic service, and a great atmosphere at VERY affordable prices!! While Italo's is a Mexican restaurant, it has a huge menu that includes many traditional American foods as well as American breakfasts! The decor is cute and almost cafe-esque. It was cozy and comfortable, definitely nice enough for a date. The menu is very large but we went with burritos. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. While you wait for your order they bring warm, toasted homemade tortillas and salsa (very tasty!) When I asked for sour cream he brought me two cups and told me to try each (one containing Mexican cream, which was much more flavorful and my choice for in my burrito). The burritos were huge and had "burrito" written on them with Mexican cream! It was a great touch. To add spice to your burrito ask for jalapenos (they're produce peppers as opposed to jarred) and taste better. When my boyfriend asked for salsa our waiter said he had something good and we heard him go to the kitchen and MAKE fresh salsa just for our table. After chatting with him for a little, he brought us horchatas on the house, it's like a milky cinnamon drink, to relieve any spiciness. I definitely reccommend trying this place out, it's very service oriented and a hidden gem!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
