One of the biggest challenges I have when visiting my mom in eastern Pennsylvania is finding decent restaurants. By far, most of what's available is of the TGI Friday's, Red Lobster and McDonald's variety or some very basic, fairly mediocre local establishments. Yes, there are a several good places around, and perhaps one or two outstanding ones, but they are few and far between (McCool's and, especially, 187 Rue Principale are among them). I was delighted to find BigBites BBQ, a welcome addition to the neighborhood and the only place to get decent BBQ in the area. Family run, all the recipes are original and several, such as the beans and coleslaw are old family recipes. The place is clean and neat and the service casual and friendly. You order at the counter and they will bring the food to your table. I had a combo plate with a 1/4 rack of ribs (four large pork ribs) and the brisket, which is served as a sandwich. My wife and I got the spicy BBQ sauce on the ribs, which were delicious, but the sauce not particularly hot to my taste, There was no sauce on the brisket, which was also delicious, but I would have preferred some sauce on that, too. I'm sure they'd have given me some if I had asked for it. The yummy coleslaw has a thin dressing and is just a bit on the sweet side, Pennsylvania Dutch style. The beans were fantastic and the cornbread with honey butter is a must. On top of the wonderful food, the owners are just plain nice people. When my mom was home recovering from some surgery and couldn't prepare her own meal, Jean, who didn't know my mom, went above and beyond by delivering some food to her home (even though they don't usually deliver orders), and then stopped by again the next day with even more food! We can never thank her enough for her kindness. What more can I say. This place is a great addition to the area and anyone who likes good barbecue should stop by here and treat themselves to some of the best.

During a recent visit, we enjoyed the brisket sandwich and ribs. While I would not say that the "traditional" sauce was all that traditional (there was a sweetness that reminded me of tamarind?), it was good. The brisket was a bit dry, but had good smoke flavor. The sandwich had large chunks of brisket, rather than chopped, the latter of which can be a sign that you are not getting their best product. The ribs were just a shade overcooked, but again had good flavor. They were not oversauced. My wife ordered a 1/4 rack of ribs, while my brisket sandwich platter came with a 1/4 rack (I don't think I have encountered that before outside of a combo). Sides are put in two categories. Depending upon whether you get a regular side or a speciality side determines how many sides you get. Sides were homemade and tasty. The garlic mashed potatoes had lumps (liked that!) and just enough garlic to know it was there, without being overpowering. The cole slaw was good, with a peppery kick. We also tried two other sauces that they had on the side, the East Carolina-style vinegar and the South Carolina-style mustard. The mustard sauce was a bit thinner than we have had in South Carolina, but the flavor was on a par with the best we had when we were there. They need to find a way to feature this sauce more. As someone with significant BBQ experience in cooking, judging and eating in nearly 100 BBQ restaurants, including some of the best in the country, I would return to BigBites. Not the best I have every had, but worth the stop.

I want to start saying this: if your only experience with bbq is what you've had at Applebee's or TGI Fridays then this place will be good. Now to my own personal review as a 15 year bbq chef. I went there tonight on a cold snowy night on my way home. The place is right next to my aunt and grand moms house so I've passed it many times since they opened. I kept a very open mind and order my go to bbq meats for any restaurant, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. The brisket and pork came as a platter with a sweet potato(I did not get a sweet potato, I got a regular baked potato, Something I didn't realize till I got home with my food). I liked that I could get just a 1/4 rack of ribs at a reasonable price to go with my meal. The meat of all three was cooked quite well however the pork had little to no flavor at all and I doubt very highly that they even put a dry rub on the meat before smoking. The brisket was covered in sour cream which I'm sure was probably meant for the potato but really muted the flavor of the first several bites of the brisket. Once I got beneath the sour cream I got to some uncovered brisket. As I said about the pork it was very bland and lacked any signs of a dry rub on what was barely a crust on the top of the cut pieces. On to the ribs, I chose their "ruby red" ribs which I liked the sweetness of the sauce but again the meat had little flavor of its own. I'm not sure what kind of wood is used for their smoking but it gave almost nothing to the flavor of the meat. There was little to no smoke ring and very little smoke flavor in the meat. The meat itself was quite greasy which tells me the meat wasn't cooked long enough and not at the right temperature to render the fat out of it. Now I will say this. I myself prefer a very heavy smoke and deep smoke ring in my own food and I realize that some people do not like that. I think those people don't like real bbq. But as I said in the beginning, if your only experience with bbq is from Applebee's or TGI Fridays then you'll enjoy this place. I will also say that the customer service does seem to be very nice and friendly.

A longtime BBQ fan a BBQuer myself. Great food and wonderful staff. Reminds me of my hometown of Kansas City. All kinds of homemade rubs and sauces. A great first time experience.

I am a transplant from Central Texas where smoked meat is king. I had given up trying to find good BBQ in this area, but while sitting in a parking lot waiting for my wife I decided to search to see if anything was nearby. I was quite surprised to find a little place in Quakertown a couple of blocks from where I was sitting. I called them up and they were extremely friendly . They answered my questions about how they did their meat which lined up pretty closely with what I was hoping to find . There are a couple of regional differences, such as smoking meat over hickory instead of oak, which is my preference. Oak has a heavier, smokier finish to it, where hickory is lighter and almost sweet. Oak seems to penetrate the meat more as well. But I'm not complaining. The brisket was sliced a bit thicker than I am used to, but it was very tender and finished very nicely . I am sure that BigBites could survive and compete in the BBQ capital of the world. I also ordered the cornbread and a side .of beans . The corn bread was absolutely delicious, especially with the honey butter sauce . The beans were sweeter than I am accustomed to but very tasty. The prices were a bit high as well, but everything up here seems steep and they honestly weren't that much more expensive than I'm used too. All in all I am very happy to have found a place that can make me feel at home . I will continue to smoke my own meat as I love to do so, but on those occasions when I don't have eight hours to spare, at least I have a place not too far away that can sate my appetite.

We have been wanting to try this place for awhile now but keep thinking about it on days they are closed. The food: outstanding. I had the pulled pork and ribs with potato salad and cornbread, bf had brisket with beans and cucumber salad. Portions weren't huge, we brought a rib and a little bit of the sides home. Everything was delicious - great BBQ that is slow cooked - hard to find in this area! Customer service: outstanding. Everyone was friendly, service was prompt, and the place is very clean! Price: the only thing that will have me hesitating to go back - for 2 people to have lunch it cost a little over $30.00. I could spend that much at a chain and have a couple drinks in the mix. It's not absurd but the location (a strip of stores) and demographic (lunch/early dinner crowd, no waitresses, etc) should've been a little cheaper.

Had a great dinner here on Saturday night. I had the brisket platter and my wife had the chicken platter. Bright, clean, big portions, delicious food, fair prices, and attentive service. Excellent across the board.

My husband and I have eaten here many times and the food is always great! He loves the brisket platter with the ruby red glaze and my particular favorite is the pulled chicken sandwich with the traditional sauce and garlic mashed potatoes! Yum!!! we've also ordered a couple of pounds of brisket for a family picnic and is a big hit with our families. The family that owns the place is super nice and it is always very clean.

Customer Service: 5 stars. The family running this place is extremely friendly. The small place is extremely clean and the cost for dinner is very reasonable. This feels like a local family joint. The choices for ribs are traditional or ruby red. One sauce, the other a glaze, not rubs so I don't trust the recent long 1 star review from someone that that rates 90% of the restaurants 1 star. As far as smoked meats, there are definitely better choices, but you'd have to drive 25 minutes and wait another 25 in line. Some of the more recent "barbeque" places were not even serving smoked meat. That being said, the food here is good and reasonable, the family that runs it is friendly, and if you are in the Quakertown area, this is the best.

Great barbecue...but better than that...gluten free food. The ribs and pulled pork and beef were tasty. I was able to get (gluten free) cornbread, mac and cheese (!) and bread for a sandwich. Staff friendly. Place is small and clean with a relaxed atmosphere.

Sounds like Glenn needs to chill out! My family and I pulled up later on a Saturday afternoon. We wanted a break from "fast food" but wanted something to take home that was good. The food was fabulous. My husband and I took turns waiting for our food (our 5 kids were in our van with us) and both had great conversations with the owners who were super friendly with great customer service. We had tried other BBQ restaurants in the area and didn't want the heavy "rub" ribs or the lack of sauce. We ordered the brisket (no bread), a full rack of ribs, and a chicken breast. Everything was awesome. The ribs were super tender, and the sauce phenomenal. However, there was NOT enough brisket....it was soooo good, that I wanted more!!!! We definitely will be going back. If they were running out of food, then its because people are spreading the word with how great the place is.

I tried one of everything and liked the BBQ. The Beef Brisket was excellent. True smoky flavor on all meat. The standard homemade sauce is tomato base and mild. I hope they decide to offer a spicy sauce and Carolina vinegar base sauce.

What a great place. My family and I have been here several times and the food has always been great. Everything is made fresh (the way it should be) and cooked low and slow like good BBQ should be. Try the meat parfait and the pulled pork both are really great. My wife's favorite is the meatloaf sandwich. Best of luck to Big Bites BBQ

I want to like this place. The set up is beautiful. Everything is clean and professional looking. My gripe is the value. I had the brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad, $10.00 with no drink. I know, I know, it's 2013 not 1993. But for 10 bucks I'd like a sandwich that's packed with meat. Mine wasn't. The roll was tasty enough, one of those par baked ones that Sysco seems to specialize in. But it was too big for the amount of meat; whole mouthfuls of just bread and some sauce. The brisket was good, the potato salad was OK. I'll be back and will update accordingly.

A BBQ place in Quakertown! Yipee! I stumbled onto this place quite by accident-it was dinnertime and we're looking for a place to have dinner. I saw big bites and I thought great! Pulled pork and ribs, just what I'm in the mood for. The restaurant is clean and well decorated. The menu consists of several main items: St. Louis style ribs, baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and brisket with the usual sides of coleslaw, beans, cucumber salad etc. I was really hungry for St. Louis style ribs, but they were sold out. How could you be sold out of one of the main items on your menu at dinnertime? I think I knew at this point they weren't want to get a good review on Yelp, but I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt and try other menu items. I decided on the baby back ribs and they give you a choice of the original Rub or the typical barbecue sauce sopping. I went with the original rub and my friend got the pulled pork sandwich. We also got side orders of beans, cucumbers salad and coleslaw. The ribs were not fall off the bone they were like gnaw off the bone-the flavor was good though. My friend who got the pulled pork sandwich said it was good, although the usual side of pickles was absent. I have a recipe for serving ribs and BBQ: pickles and coleslaw and lots of them. These were missing from our order, except the coleslaw which I paid extra for. The coleslaw was watery and really lacked flavor-there was no Tang or sweetness. The beans were very good and had a nice, albeit a bit too much smoky flavor. The customer service was ok, although people were running around very awkwardly. There are a bunch of young kids manning the register and you could tell they were awkward, not very attentive to customer service and they struggled to figure out change. Their organization seemed more akin to a Keystone Cops short, or as they say, a Chinese fire drill. Honestly, it appears as though, and to quote a line from a famous movie, the kids don't know "shite from Shinola." Rule number one in restaurant running: don't have kids who don't know anything at the front of the house. Another bit of a problem I saw, was the fact that they had no diet soda or diet soft drinks at all! Wake up people it's 2013 and people are conscious of what goes into their body and lots of people drink diet soda and or diet tea and other soft drinks. Don't you think it would be wise to have a few select from? in conclusion, to run out of food at dinner time, marginal customer service, odd hours (they're only open until 8:00-most people don't eat diner until then), few menu items to select from and not a great selection of diet soft drinks makes me think longevity of their business will be about six months, if that. I would have to be bound and gagged and forced at gunpoint to go back to this eatery. Don't people put any thought into a business plan before opening the doors-seems to me an acute case of hubris is at work here? It doesn't seem like it in this case.

Tried the place because of other good reviews. They were right on. I tried the pulled pork sandwich, beans, and cornbread. The pulled pork was excellent. It had good taste and excellent smoke flavor. The beans were traditional and were terrific, they also were smoked slightly. The cornbread was very good also. It was supposed to be smoked but I didn't taste flavor. The owner was proud of the place and made it interesting and fun to eat there. They had ribs, brisket, and chicken. Looking forward to trying them in future visits. I wish they had platters. I like to try the food without the bread. The rolls here and, any other place I have tried, were not anything special. All in all this is a bbq place that is a welcome addition. The prices were reasonable. I wish it good luck and success.

One of the best finds in Quakertown. My wife and I moved to the area recently and have loved exploring local restaurants. By far this has been our favorite discovery. It may not be the largest menu but what they do they do very well. The brisket sandwich is amazing. My wife has a gluten intolerance, which can make dining a bit more challenging, but big bites even has gluten free rolls. Everything we have tried we have loved. The only downside is we can't go over when that BBQ craving hits during the week. Still, if not being able to eat at a restaurant as often as you like is the worst thing you can say about it then they are doing something right.

Great BBQ! I've eaten at this restaurant almost every weekend that I have been in town since they have opened in late May and have tried almost every menu item - everything has been superb! The ribs are GREAT - don't let a poor review dissuade you from trying them - anyone who eats a lot of BBQ ribs knows that good ribs should not necessarily "fall off the bone" to be good - they should actually have some "tooth" to them and good texture. You can just boil the ribs and then grill them off and get them to fall off the bone, but you won't get the experience of the great texture AND flavor of the ribs at this restaurant. The brisket is phenomenal - has a great crust and has the flavor and tenderness that belies the fact that they clearly get a LONG smoke. Pulled pork and pulled chicken is moist with great flavor and texture. All of the side salads clearly are freshly made. The corn salad has great texture with plenty of crunch from the fresh vegetables to balance the soft, sweet corn. The potato salad also has the perfect balance of perfectly cooked potatoes and crunch of vegetables with fresh herbs to round out the flavors. The cucumber salad is just slightly sweet with good acid that helps balance the sweet of the barbecue. The freshly prepared coleslaw gives a great tang and crunch with sweetness that marries very well with the pulled pork. The buns that have been chosen for the sandwiches have a perfect blend of a firmness that stand up to the meat juices without being overly crunchy. This restaurant does have limited hours, but it is well worth it to visit and try it out during those hours to get some truly great BBQ. It would be nice to have some combination platters of things that typically pair well, but for those who love BBQ, we usually know what sides work best for us and like the a la carte nature of this restaurant's menu as well. BigBites should be a must try if you love good BBQ in a truly independent, family owned, and family-friendly restaurant.
