American restaurants also serve veggie burgers for those who don't relish meat. Cheeseburgers are also hot favorite in the United States.

New owner, new chef...and a big change for the best. New menu items are really good and different. While its not five star elegant dining, it's worthy of good food our see on Diners Drive ins and Dives. Be sure to get the Breakfast Fries...even for dinner. They are the bomb! Next time, I am having the fried chicken on French toast...looks fantastic! Good job team...we will be back to try ,ore.

CANOE OUTFITTERS I went with friends to go canoeing here and it was pretty nice. You had to register with the bartender and bring waiver forms signed. It was about $22 for each person. We split into 3 canoes with 2 people each. Women in front and men in the back. We did the 1.5 hour canal canoe trip and it would have been longer if we actually picked up the canoe and went to the next canal. Overall, very peaceful with alot of geese. Alot of low lying trees which made it an adventure. Afterwards, we went to Molly Maguires and would come out here again.

The decor is exactly what you'd expect from this gem. The patio is ideal for sitting out in the sun while dining for lunch. Luckily, we had perfect weather. The food is exceptional bar food and reasonably priced. Enjoy a cocktail with the chicken Philly!

New chef, Anthony, is fantastic. Just what this place needed. The food was perfect, first time in a long time. He brought our order out and solicited our feedback. He had some great ideas and really knows his stuff. Tara, the bartender, was friendly and talkative. Best experience we've had there in a long time. We will be disappointed if they change staff again.

The ONLY reason I rated this place 3-stars (and not 2) is because of the unique location and cool deck. Word to the wise: let go of any expectation of good service when you go here, else you may be extremely dissapointed. First, the good: this is a cool little bar/restaurant that's tucked away off the beaten path. It's an old stone house that sits right on the canal. The outdoor deck is fairly large (maybe 10-12 tables), and looks right over the canal. On Sundays, they have a band that plays outdoors (weather permitting, obviously) on the front yard. You can just hang out on a blanket or chairs, watch the band, and bring drinks and food out from the bar. Now, the bad: The food is ok. Nothing great, nothing horrible. Typical bar fare. Where this place lacks is service. I have never seen a more disorganized group of servers anywhere! We sat for about 15 minutes at our table on the deck, with two servers constantly walking past. You'd think one of them would have stopped and asked, "Has anyone been out to help you yet? No? Oh, I'm sorry, I'll have someone come right out!" Nope! Took a visit to the bartender to ask for someone to come out. And this has happened on more than one occasion. Plus, the place was not exactly crowded. We ordered two appetizers. Only one came out correct. Expect your drinks to sit empty before someone comes by and asks if you want more. To our server's credit, she left us the "wrong" appetizer to eat, and did not charge us. She also comped a beer for the slow start we got off to. In summary, if you don't have high expectations for service, you'll probably find this a fun place to hang out on a warm, sunny afternoon.

Four stars for Fitzwater Station, two stars for Port Providence Paddle. Did a Sunday brunch for my wedding here and bought everyone tubes and lunch. Sue did a great job planning the menu and event. She went out of her way to make it a good deal for us, giving us a flat rate per person, setting up tables for us with plastic tablecloths on the shady grass by the canal. The planning and customer service were fabulous, the food was pretty nice-- lots of fried food and cheese and meat which isn't really my thing-- but the fried green tomatoes were awesome!! One regret: there was no music or background noise in the picnic grove, which meant it was way too quiet when the guests were first trickling in, and I could see that they all felt uncomfortable. Really wish I had brought music and lawn games. Port Providence Paddle was only two stars. Despite being located a few feet apart, they have different owners, and they do not communicate well with each other. Planning a group tubing event was a nightmare. The guy who runs Port Providence was impossible to get in touch with. He would call me, I would run to the phone and just miss it, call him instantly back and he wouldn't pick up. We would agree on a time for a phone call and he just wouldn't pick up then. It really felt like he didn't want my 30+ people worth of business. Dealing with him was stressful from start to finish. He was hounding us during our whole meal to get in the tubes, but he wouldn't help me get a headcount for how many tubes we still needed to fill. The young teenagers he had running his booth were being young teenagers. However, to his great credit, he didn't charge us for the tubes we reserved but didn't use, which I really appreciated. Group rate: $45 per canoe, $15 per tube. The river was slow with sharp rocks. Water shoes and sunscreen are a must. We found it very hard to keep the tubes together despite the slow current. Also, they forgot to put up the sign that says where to get out of the water, so we all went way too far downstream. One of my guests ended up at an impassable waterfall and had to use his military training to navigate a mile through the woods back to the party-- a good opportunity to keep his survival skills sharp :)

3.5 stars. I came to canoe. They allow dogs, which is a plus. When you canoe, in order to make a loop, you have to get out of the water and drag your canoe two times, which was a pain. We worked up an appetite and decided to stay for lunch. I had the chicken salad, which was huge and very tasty. S had the Salmon BLT. We both enjoyed our food. My only complaint was that the service was extreeeemely slow. And the waitress forgot to bring the beer. But even brought ice cubes for the dogs water! We also had a nice view sitting on the deck while we were eating.

Update to last review on 9.24.2009 There are no good qualities left to speak of. They used to have good food, and it was great for a beer after a bike ride or kayak paddle, but I believe there are new owners. Our waitress was nice, but absolutely clueless. We asked how the Mac & cheese was, and she replied that she liked it. Ours came out ice cold, and when we asked if it was supposed to be hot, she said she didn't know. (Thought you said it was good, which would imply you know if it should be hot or cold???). The crab Mac and cheese is also 15.99, but is the size of a side dish. Service was painfully slow. Never checked with us once and had to flag people down for the bill. I would have loved another beer, if I could have found the waitress. No attention to the basics. In the category of "just plain weird"... Everyone receives a large boiled carrot with their meal now. Heard one table say "am I supposed to make a snowman with this???" It's a wasteful, unattractive garnish folks. Come on now! Otherwise, I'll call the food unhealthy AND flavorless. I'm fine with unhealthy once in a while, but only when it TASTES good! Hummus for my 4 year old came out with two fried pita chips lathered up in hot sauce. ??? The Fitz burger is good, and the only thing I would order again although my medium rare was more like surface of the sun charred and well done. Patrons are typically bikers and locals. Many people bring dogs, but some are unleashed, which leads to brutal dog fights. I think it's actually nice that they let you have dogs there, but one lady had two GIANT dogs on the tiny deck. Doesn't work... Think this would be a great candidate for Kitchen Nightmares or similar tv show!!!

Inside: What is that smell?! Mold, Mildew? Outside: broken umbrellas, baking in the sun. Strange plastic covering on tables, (for hygienic reasons, due to the ducks and geese?, looks as if it has not been changed in a week.) Ordered: pumpkin beer, delicious, good service at beginning. Then, grilled chicken sandwich, diced with apple wood bacon and mushrooms. Huge bun, little tiny pieces of super dry curled up chicken chunks no seasoning and no sauce. black , charred, stringy mushrooms dripping in heavy grease. Gross. Where did our waiter go? Didn't see him for 40 minutes and the place is empty. Water glass empty. Chased him down to find the check. Family: enjoyed their overly breaded sandwiches, pork and crab. What is that smell?! Why don't I check yelp, before I go out? Must remember!

I am so disappointed I do not even know where to begin. My family has enjoyed The Fitz for over 15 years. My husband and I are also fans of the French Quarter Bistro and were delighted when the new management took over the Fitz and changed the menu. We have visited the Fitz several times over the past few months and have not been disappointed...until today. We arrived at 11:30 and were the only patrons in the place ( they open at 11:00 so it was not surprising that it was empty before the lunch crowd). We were greeted by a "quirky" ( you will see where I am going with this later) , young, tattooed waitress. She was VERY excited to see us and proceeded to tell us she was so glad we were there because the restaurant has been really slow lately and she needed to make some money. She came over to take our drink order but could not remember the types of beers so my husband walked to the bar area to pick one out.. A few minutes later she came back to see if we were ready to order, we were still checking out the menu so we placed an order for some potato skin appetizers. While we were placing the order some more patrons entered and our waitress ran over to greet them and said she was so excited to see people so she could make some money. Once they were seated she redirected herself to us and took our apps order. a few minutes later she returned to take our order, as we started to tell her what we wanted she said " Oh wait I should probably write this down" and then disappeared to the bar area. Returning with paper and pen she now seemed ready to take our order. My son ordered a cheese-steak with fries and my daughter a cheeseburger and fries. I ordered a Turkey Cobb Sandwich ( a lunch special) and my husband ordered wings. Our waitress dashed off with our order immediately not even asking how the burger was to be cooked, what type of cheese for the steak or burger or what type of wing sauce my husband wanted. A few minutes later she was back asking who ordered the chicken sandwich. Um.. what???? She reviewed our orders with us and we determined that when she wrote down cheeseburger she could not read her writing and it looked like "chicken something". At that time she did ask what types of cheese my son and daughter wanted but did not ask about the wing sauce. Our appetizer came out and she placed the plate on our table said "enjoy" and walked away. Now there were FOUR of us and ONE plate with the appetizers on it. My husband got up and sought out our waitress and asked her for some PLATES. She brought us TWO and asked "is that okay:" Sigh... A few minutes later our food arrived. My husband got a mild sauce with his wings, he likes spicy, but hey who cares our waitress was making money right? My son and daughter got chips instead of french fries. We asked for the fries and finally did get them AFTER the sandwiches had been eaten. The food was very good. My husband loved the wings despite the "mild" sauce and my Turkey Cobb sandwich ( carved roast turkey, sliced apple, lettuce, tomato and a spicy cranberry mayo on a brioche roll) was awesome. When it came time for the bill our waitress again mentioned about how glad she was that we chose the Fitz for lunch because she needed the money. She also said we should come back for Karaoke one night and ask to get seated at her table. Um...no thanks. The new menu at the Fitz is very good, we all enjoyed our food very much. Sadly, the dining experience gets one star. Do not tell us the restaurant has been slow, do not tell us you need to make money and do not get our orders wrong!

Nice deck view for a sunday afternoon beer. A little pricey for a draft beer in a plastic cup, but its right on the bike trail - so location, location, location trumps the day,
(3)Sharyn C.
Great lunch and service, the lump crab and shrimp salad with Mango vignette was fresh and delicious ! A great stop while kayaking the river. One suggestion would be to make it easier for kayakers to exit.
(5)Rose H.
I would have given a 0 star if it was an option. Service was horrible, food was blah, and other customers were loud and rude. There were only 3 or 4 tables and the waitress took more than 20 minutes to get us the check. We ordered crab fries instead of chips to go with the sandwich, but she gave us regular fries and charged extra. The only reason we didn't bring up the issue was because it would taken her another 2 hours just to sort it out. Do not go there.
(1)Igor O.
Very slow service. An excellent place for your last meal. Or for a quick lunch, if you clear the rest of your afternoon schedule. Or if mother-in-law is in town. You get the point...
(2)Rula R.
Fitzwater is a place where you an get cold beer, delicious food and a nice quite view on the river and served by friendly people. I absolutely love it and im so happy they re opened.
(5)Jim S.
Just had a great lunch here today. Service was fast and efficient. Food was very good large salad, salmon and fish basket tasty. I have not been here in a while but I will be back soon.
(5)Chuck C.
It's a shame that the service sucks. The server staff are miserable. The food was decent and the location is fantastic but the staff killed the whole experience. Not once did our server smile and I heard another server drop the f bomb talking about customers. It basically seemed the servers did not want to work or have customers at all. This place has so much potential but need to either change its management or fire all of its serving staff and start over.
(2)M W.
3 Stars for the Canoe, Kayak and tube rentals!!!. For the food and service I would give 1 star. Service was extremely slow even though there was only like 1 other person in there besides us. This place has a lot of potential if they would just clean it up and get a well trained staff and better food. I will try again in the future to see if anything has changed.
(3)Ron B.
needs a better wait staff and higher food quality, biggest saving grace is that you can hoop right into a canoe or kayak and route to the schuylkill via the canal.
(3)Chris K.
This gets a big fat 0 as my review!! Not only was our service completely horrible but it took 2 hrs for us to get our food. When we asked where our food was they blamed it on the kitchen and the waitress gave us attitude. Don't bother wasting your time with that garbage!! On a side note the kayak rentals are AWESOME!!
(1)Liz F.
This place is hilarious, huge and on the water. Rumor has it that you can rent kayaks/canoes while drinking. They have a pretty small bar and table area but then open up to some pool tables and a gigantic deck. Sitting at a table with Peter B. I think he summed this place up best: the inmates run the asylum. We showed up on a Saturday- karaoke night. There were maybe 5 people who sang, 3 of which worked for or were good friends with the staff. So, if want to go belt out some tunes and hone your skills this is a great venue. The rest of the crowd was funny and included an awesome lady who danced and grooved to everyone's songs. Beers are cheap but not a huge selection. I'd go back to hang out on the deck, rent some kayaks or do some above average people watching. But, overall, I'm pretty underwhelmed.
(3)Samantha L.
I went to the opening day of the new deck. This place has the perfect location! You could drive or walk down the trail along the canal and cross over the bridge to stop for a bite. Our experience was beyond disappointing. The lady said to 'seat yourself' and that's exactly what we did. We sat and waited patiently for someone, and that never happened. After waiting 15 minutes we had to go inside to get some drinks at the bar, and then went back to our table. We sat their for probably an hour. We ended up finishing our drinks while chit chatting got up and left.
(1)A F.
Started on the deck but the huge air conditioner was constantly dripping right behind my seat so moved inside. It was freezing inside! None of the tables were clean. It smelled like spilled beer. We ordered a bunch of appetizers. The fried pickles were way over cooked and very dry. The crab fries only had Old Bay on the top. With our nachos, we asked for jalapeños, and black olives on the side and there were containers on the side of the dish but once we started eating we noticed there were still black olives and jalapeños in the nachos. The chili on the nachos were huge balls of meat instead of shredded ground beef. We ordered a fish bowl each and the size was good but they were very sweet and all you could taste was like blue Pucker. Overall very disappointed

Great random find after a day at the Philly Expo Center. Nice cheap beer specials and good food. Very nice people behind the bar. A bit of a wait to get a table on a Sunday, so my friend and I went straight to the bar, which was the goal anyway. Food also took a while to get to us (about 30-40 mins), but I understand that it was really busy. Everything arrived very hot, so at least it's not as if it had been sitting and waiting. The Clam Chowder was excellent. They also have a nice deck and offer canoe and kayak rental, which we didn't take part in, but the prices seemed reasonable. I would definitely come here again if I go to another show at the Expo Center.
(4)Colleen M.
I've been here a couple of times: once to rent a canoe and once to drink and play Quizzo. I can't speak for the food, but the drinks are to be expected and the Quizzo is pretty standard. It's a pretty chill place with lots of places to sit. It's sort of back in a neighborhood and generally not too crowded. Turns out water sports aren't for me, but it's a good place to rent a canoe and cruise the canal.
(4)Degenerate S.
This place is as low key as it gets. The food is good, they have vegetarian options, it's a great place to sit and chill with a drink. Have been here for lunch a couple of times and the lunch specials are always worth a try. The staff is friendly but leaves you alone to enjoy your food, drink and conversation. In the summer, there is a deck for outdoor dining, but beware, it's over a canal. I was bitten over 100 times by mosquitoes. But that's just a caution for the sweet in warm weather...
(4)Peter B.
I never was a fan of the food at the Fitz. In fact, it's pretty bad. However, the layout is cool and it's on the canal. They have an outside deck which is nice in the warmer seasons. The drinks are reasonably priced and they have a fish bowl special. The fishbowl is advertised to be shared by two people. It's a big bowl with a concoction of mixed liquors to get you lacker, if you know what you mean. They have other specials like karaoke and quiz night which can be entertaining.
(4)J P.
Decent club sandwich, good fries, ice cold coke. I wish they didn't take so long to seat me and I wish the waitress wouldn't complain to me about how bogged down she is but hey, it is what it is. I stopped in after a long bike ride and was happy enough to get fed. They have nice deck seating over looking the canal. I got the feeling this is more of a locals only type of place but in the end it was all good. Would I make this place a dining destination. No way. But I would come back again to eat lunch and finish my ride home.
(2)Jodi O.
ZERO STARS...horrible service and the waitress had an attitude problem ~ sat for 20 minutes waiting for drinks. Decided to just leave!! Will never go back!
(1)Deirdre M.
Most pretentious townie bar ever. My friends and I were looking for a new bar, and we read the reviews here for Fitzwater Station. We were really excited because they have quizzo on Friday nights. We got there around 9:15, and quizzo was supposed to start at 9:30. My friends asked the waitress if we could sit at the only empty table and she replied curtly, "I don't know" and walked away. There were nine of us in our party, and absolutely no room for us at the bar. After a few minutes we decided to leave and head to another bar in Phoenixville. As we were about to leave a waitress asked us if we were there to play quizzo and then said "You can only have six people on your team." We asked if there was any place we could sit, and she said no and that we should have made a reservation. What bar requires reservations? Overall, it felt like we were not welcome at the bar. It seems like if you're not a regular, they don't want you there. But in reality, they missed out on a nine person bar tab.
(1)Emily A.
What is it with this area and poor service? The waitresses with whom my party attempted to interact ignored us completely. We didn't even get to order because we were straight up ignored for 20 minutes. We left. The parking lot is also very sketchy. One good thing: ducks on the water outside! Quack!
(1)Andrew L.
Great bar with a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Great deck overlooking the canal. Perfect place for a relaxing dinner.
(5)deanna lynn w.
We called ahead to ask and be sure they did all you can eat crabs and we were told yes. There were about 10 of us for a birthday tonight. I understand its Monday. After taking our apps, we gave our order - we were there for crabs! Then told only enough for Maybe 3 of us to have "all you can eat". So we chose 3 guys to claim it. Then she came back and denied crabs altogether. No explanation other than they are usually dead on a Monday. I get that. Maybe we bombarded this "gem" of a place on a dead night with one waitress. We really are easy going people. Keep the beer coming, keep us informed, and stop blaming the new chef or the packed house (head count was at 5). Our apps were forgotten, soups forgotten, and many entrees missed or messed up. There is no reason a soup comes out After an entree or a crab cake Caesar be the last to come out. That's all premade that can be made ASAP. This was a 2.5 hr night which would rock if we were drinking and munching the entire time. Nope. This is a place with a menu that reads Very well. Food Sounded great. You can rent a canoe, take it out, stop back for a bite and pint. How cool right? We didn't experience the food they boasted about. Maybe it was timing. But there was no management taking responsibility. Nothing. I hope the owners read this and reach out for constructive criticism. I'm not one to complain, however I felt Very compelled to say Something about our evening. I would not go back unfortunately.
(1)Dave S.
Something drastic needs to be done immediately or the latest version of The Fitz will go down in flames. The parking lot may be full but that's from trail & water users...unless there's a live band playing in the grove, the Fitz is usually empty. I stopped by around 10PM this past week with a friend and the place was closed!!
(3)Dawna M.
Friends and I have given this place a couple of opportunities, since it's on the water. Disappointment each time. 1). Food - Soup that was served wasn't remotely warm by the time it reached the table. The cheesecake...frozen! Literally. Still frozen when it was brought to the table. Crab cake sandwich was ok. 2). Service - first time there the service was pretty slow, but she would eventually get to you on the patio. Second time, the lady tending bar was on this side of rude. Yes, you're almost busy, but that's no excuse for the brusqueness. The hostess / server again was practically non-existent. Although it gave me plenty of time while waiting to be seated to enjoy the table reminiscing about dead bodies being found and shootings there. Wtf?! Gave up and went elsewhere when the hostess / server never found her way back.
(1)Merri C.
I have become a bit of a regular here. The Iced tea is great, the food is good, the service is good and friendly. There is a deck you can sit out on when the weather is right, other wise there is a sitting area in the bar or in a glassed in deck. The decor is dated, but in general my husband and I enjoy ourselves every time we go.
(4)Christine K.
5 stars for the location but everything else barely gets one star. Our family visited last night. Where do I begin? There is no host, so you stand at the door for at least 5 minutes before getting greeted. When we finally got sat, the sever came over and took our drink and kids food order. The server came back about 5-10 minutes later with only one kids drink saying she had to get more cups so my daughter started screaming crying because she didn't have a cup. She returned with the juice 5 minutes later and took our order. The kids food came out within 15 minutes. The kids ate their entire meal and were ready to go and we still didn't get our meals. The server stopped by once and got another round of drinks and said our food would be out shortly. She delivered the drinks. Another 15 minutes at least go by and the food wasn't out yet. My husband wanted another beer and she never came out. He tried to go to the bar but apparently there was no bar tender because he never got one. It took over 35 minutes for our meals to come out after we ordered. We got our check with our meals. We had to eat our meals so fast that we couldn't even taste the food because our children were ready to go. I gave the server our check and it took another 10 minutes to get change. And she gave me big bills back. The server had said the kitchen was backed up, with what? I saw 4 other tables who looked like they were waiting around, and about 8 tables outside. Who was working the kitchen then just one cook on their first day?! A wrap does not take 35 minutes to make!! I never saw a manager, in fact I only saw 3 people who working there at all! This restaurant is poorly managed. I will not be going back unless you force me.
(1)Percy N.
From the outside this looks like a typical neighborhood bar...and it is, however, during the summer they rent canoes and kayaks as well. So today we did some canoeing and worked up an appetite paddling over 4 miles, thus we went for a beer and a sandwich. They serve typical American/bar fare (sandwiches, wings, burgers, salads, etc). The portions are huge and the beer battered fries are pretty good. They do have a patio you can sit on or by the bar, which can get a bit smoky.
(4)Austin K.
Great place for friends, cocktails, food, and atmosphere. Been regulars for many years and consider The Fitz our "Cheers" - and if you are too young to understand the reference, you won't fully appreciate The Fitz. BTW - THE BEST cheesesteak in the area.
(5)Lisa N.
The food wasn't bad and the french fries were very good, but the service was slow. When we walked in, the sign said to wait to be seated. There was no hostess. Seating was being handled by the waitresses who were pretty busy and it took a while for them to acknowledge us. There appeared to be only two waitresses for the entire indoor dining area. Definitely not enough for a Saturday night. We even heard a waitress loudly complaining about a very small tip she received. Very inappropriate.
(2)Nicole G.
I usually dont write reviews actually never but this is needed. As this restaurant is dive bar'ish I dont expect much more than bar food. I have been here a few times and food has been good service not great but not terrible. I went here with my family and friends for a birthday -the place wasn't busy- We sat on the patio and had the worst service ever - drinks took forever one round took about 30 minutes. We had no silverware- food came out cold. We ended up spending about $300.00 and we were super dissapointed it pretty much ruined the birthday celebration. I have put the fitz on my black list- If I get bored with every other place in phoenixville I will go back - MAybe.
(2)Meagan H.
Awesome pork sandwich! Great and friendly service. Only downside is that the bar is a little uncomfortable to sit at and it's quite dark inside. Can't wait for it to get warmer out and sit outside!
(4)David F.
This is a dive bar and not a dive bar. Its that local bar that seems to be a dive bar but has that something that pushes out of that realm. The beer selection is good, the food is good, the service is what you expect from a bar, but the atmosphere is that neighborhood bar that may initially scare you but you'll quickly discover this is a lovable, hard working group of people that enjoy their company and drinks. Nice!
(4)Melissa G.
This place is allright. They have a tendency to run out of steaks unfortunately, so if you're a meatatarian, like I, it might not be the best option. They serve pretty good cold shrimp, but the problem is, they don't de-vein, and I won't eat shrimp that has the vein in it. Something about that just makes me shudder a little. Not to mention, if I chew meat and it crunches, it gives me the willies. I've tried the salads and am not really a fan. The steak is the best option IF you can get it.

This is indeed a local's dive bar and it's great! I bet in the summer there are people from all over to take advantage of the canoe rental, which I can't wait to check out. We stopped in this hidden bar on a Friday night. I would say it wasn't crowded but not empty either. I think it was hard to get a table at first. It happened to be quizzo night! That was fun abc entertaining. It did make the service slower but it was worth it. I saw they also have weekday specials I'm going to check out. Anyway, this is a bugs little bar that gas fun entertainment and gives you a relaxed atmosphere. One star off because the food was average bar food (think cold onion rings).

ahhhh the good old fitz. I love this place. they have really good food, a huge menu, and an outdoor deck that overlooks the canal! The inside is a kinda dive bar feel, complete with a pool table. They have lots of bands playing there all summer, and they also rent kayaks during the summer [so much for your typical neighborhood dive bar huh?] As for their food, I havent ever had anything bad. Crab Balls, bacon and blue cheese stuffed burgers, great wings, among other things. Oh and their drinks. for one, they have a fishbowl canal punch, which requires u to have a DD to purchase, what part of a drink that requires a DD could possibly not be fun?? as for the non alcoholic, their tea is really very good. its homebrewed tea with oranges and lemons squeezed in it. SO refreshing. So overall dont be scared by the divey atmosphere, the fitz is one of phoenixville's hidden secrets waiting to be discovered

i went here to try kayaking for the first time and i loved it. the kayaks are $37 and canoes are $47. it's a little confusing when you first get there; you have to go into the bar to pay and let them know you are there for your reservation, and there aren't any signs clearly stating that. they supply life jackets and everything else. the guys who got us settled in the water were nice, but they didn't provide any tips or instructions, but i guess it's pretty self explanatory. you start in the canal. right now, there are quite a few trees down in the canal because of the hurricane we just had, and there is one part that you have to get out of the water and carry your boat around a tree. no biggie. once you get to the end of the canal, you move over to the river. i personally preferred being in the river. there's more room for you to space out and it's prettier. one of the workers will flag you into the end of the river section and help you get your boats over this huge hill. however, he did not help US over the hill...he could have offered a hand to help pull us up, but we got through it. you have to drag your boats back to the canal and the paddle back up to the dock. they have longer routes, but for now i am sticking to "the loop". it took us about 2.5 hours to complete, and it's great for 1st timers. good price for the rentals, but the staff could be a little more helpful. but i am definitely going back! i can't speak to the food or drinks here because we didn't stay for lunch, but perhaps we will next time. kayaking makes you hungry!

I love this place, even though I half-expected to get beat up every time I went in. I now have little kids and don't really go to bars much, and when I do, most of my high-class friends are too squeamish for a smoky dive like the Fitz. But if you like cheap beer, mullets, generic cigarettes, bleached hair, loud conversations, and middle-aged washouts -- and God knows I love all those things -- then this is a good place for you. Until our first kid was born, my wife and I went religiously every Friday night. All kinds of fried and/or greasy bar food are available. Several noisy driving-themed arcade games in the back. Jukebox has a heavy emphasis on 1990s country and hair metal. Beer selections range from Coors Lite and Corona all the way through Flying Fish and Magic Hat. The place is also located right on the Schuylkill Canal and during the summer they rent out paddleboats and canoes, but I've never tried that. The last time the canal flooded, this place was shut for several weeks.
