Is it wrong to start my review with the drinks rather than the food or atmosphere? But as I sit here the next day, I keep going back to the drinks. The speciality selection was diverse and each had at least one ingredient that made me think "now that sounds good." I think it will be my mission to stop by weekly until I complete the list. There isn't more to add on food and atmosphere that hasn't already been said. It's a great setting and the dishes were interesting and complex in flavor. Even something as simple as the turnip gratin had deep flavors. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars (I'd go 4.5 if an option) is that growing up in Chester Co. I don't think I'm as blown away by the farm to table concept as the urban set, so the arching theme seems less organic and just ever so slightly contrived.

The loud crowd, over-the-top bling-bling decor, oversized space made us feel like we were in Las Vegas. It caught us by surprise, as we were thinking farm-to-table, cosy, intimate. But if you don't mind this ambience, the food is very good. Service was friendly and professional but incredibly slow (I gave up on ordering dessert because of it). The major letdown was the wine selection by the glass. I don't go to restaurants where I pay more than $150 for two without dessert to drink A-to-Z Pinot and Les Abeilles Côte du Rhone that I can get for $13 a bottle at any liquor store in town (and I do. So what's the point of paying 6 times more at a restaurant). The wine manager is MIA. Huge disappointment. So it's not for us, but given the packed crowd, many people like it there.

Most Steven Starr restaurants are all the same: awesome atmosphere, mediocre food. Talula's Garden definitely breaks this mold. First, the restaurant is so gorgeous. If you can get a table in the garden, do so because it is a magical wonderland out there! The service was excellent, everyone was super friendly and accomodating. The food was phenominal. Definitely get a cheese plate, it was the highlight of the evening when I went. Drinks were also delicious. My only complaint is that it is pretty expensive. I would save this one for a special occasion, but it is certainly worth the cost!

Loved this restaurant for its garden seating which was beyond gorgeous facing Washington Square Park in Old City Philadelphia. We had a lot of different appetizers and drinks, but the cheese plate was phenomenal and sparse! Bring a big wallet or less people and load up on food before or after leaving here or you will spend quite a bit! Loved the experience though!

I have been here twice now with friends and struggled whether to give this five or four stars. The service is phenomenal and the food delicious. As stated in other reviews - - get a cheese plate! They are all out of this world and presented beautifully. So the reason why I did not opt for five stars is it is a bit crowded for my taste and there is not a very broad selections of food on the menu. For main courses there are perhaps only eight things to choose from.

My husband took me to Talula's to celebrate my birthday the other night. What a fabulous dinner! Attentive wait-staff with excellent knowledge of foods and preparation, perfectly sized portions. I was concerned about "5 courses" and how we could enjoy it without feeling overfull at the end. I needn't have worried... it was timed well and portioned well. (and my husband was glad to help out!) And the food? We were awed again and again by wonderful explosions of flavor. Each mouthful was just meant to be savored. The April menu started with warm Parkerhouse rolls...wonderful. Followed by risotto croquettes with a mix of mushrooms in a balsamic glaze. They literally exploded with flavor in your mouth. The next course was a pureed asparagus soup poured tableside around smoked salmon, creme fraiche and herbs. Just wonderful. Our entree was lamb...a couple of slices of lamb loin, pulled lamb neck and (although I had to get my mind around it) lamb belly, which was tender and delicious. Fresh mint, fingerling potatos and olive tapanade. The cheese course was baked brie with a strawberry & rhubarb compote and pine nuts. 3 different bries...very good. And for dessert, a carrot cake with cream cheese ice cream and glazed pecans. After dessert came a birthday treat of chocolate something (I missed the name but it was yummy!) And of course we were sent home happy with some housemade granola with chocolate for the next day. A couple of reviewers say they went home hungry. How could they unless they didn't eat their food (5 courses? come on!) Or else they are just part of the "super-size" generation who equate quantity with quality. I don't believe that the definition of a good meal means discomfort when you leave. I personally could not finish all of my entree. It takes much more skill to serve a meal that delights the palate over and over again without leaving the customer in discomfort. We will come here again...and again!

A wonderful little spot to have a drink and catch up with old friends, woo a future mate or generally hang out with people you love. This is a happy place and it shows in the food, the drink and the hospitality.

This place is great. Had a business dinner meeting there last night and really enjoyed ourselves. We knocked back the cheesemongers cheese plate which was very solid then I had the chicken and my guest had the trout. Both very, very good. He said the best trout he's ever had. We also shared the cucumber salad and the beets. The cucumber salad was OK, I'm spoiled by my wife's cooking and awesome salads, but the beets were really nice and recommended. Service was solid as our witty and extremely dry waitress fit her role perfectly. Oh, and their brioche rolls served with dinner are kickass. Go here.

My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday dinner at Talula's Garden. I have been dying to come and it was absolutely the perfect choice. From the minute the cab pulled up, I was ecstatic. The garden outside is lit and spectacular and the restaurant is gorgeous. Natural wood, flowers, butterflies...perfection. Even though there were only two of us, they sat us at a round 4 seater near the cheese bar, which was amazing. Our waiter brought us both a glass of champagne to celebrate my birthday which was very much appreciated. We felt like royalty already. To start we ordered a cheese plate and told them to make something they thought we would like. Everything was delicious. The plate had a variety of cheeses along with freshly baked bread and crackers, and accompaniments...soaked raisins, salted caramel, local honey, candied walnuts, truffle and apricot chutney the list goes on. The cheese was definitely the best I've ever had. Standouts were the honey goat cheese, the cranberry orange goat cheese, the dulce gorgonzola, and the cheddar which had a note of caramel. For our appetizers we got the Hot Dixie Prawns and the Orchard Pear Salad. Both appetizers were good, but not amazing. The prawns and romesco were great, but the rest of the dish was filled with spicy peppers. The salad was my least favorite of the night. Too many large pieces of pears. Next we got another gift! Freshly baked brioche with thyme butter. Unbelievable! For our entrees we split the Muscovy Duck Breast with Crisp Chickpea Crêpe with Sweet Apricot and Duck Rillete and the Roasted Barnegat Scallops with Celery and Celery Root "Chowder," House-cured Bacon, Little-necks, and Meyer Lemon Clam Broth. Both of these were amazing. The duck was unbelievable and I am now craving it. The scallops were great as well. We opted out of dessert, but they brought us little chocolate bites with a candle for my birthday. So nice! And delicious. This was the perfect night. Great service, amazing food, amazing cheese, beautiful space. My new favorite restaurant. I can't wait to come back.

As this place was rumored to be opening I anxiously awaited its opening (I had a baby and that has really put a damper on my going out lol). I loved the concept and have always heard superb things about TT. When this was Washington Square West (right?) I loved the secret garden concept. Well the secret garden is now a beautiful oasis. Step inside and the city melts away. While the interior of the restaurant is lovely, the garden is the Starr (see what I did there) Atmosphere aside, the food was spectacular! We were given a flat-bread with a dollop of the best ricotta this Italian gal has EVER had, and that includes homemade as well as in Italy. It was sublime. My friend and I also shared a shrimp app that was perfectly plated with the most delicate of flavors. I can't quite recall the name of the drink I had, but it was crafted with bourbon. I say crafted because the bartender created not just poured a drink. While it nearly knocked me off the bar stool, it was so good! Needless to say, I only had one! I cannot wait to return! We are taking my mom for her 70th birthday to brunch. Thankfully her birthday falls in July, so hopefully we can reserve a table in the garden for brunch! she would LOVE it!

Best place for outdoor dining in the city! Lovely cheese plates. Great specialty cocktails. A great place for a special occasion dinner or brunch with friends. I'm always disappointed when I go to Talula's and the weather doesn't allow for outdoor seating but the food never disappoints.

Excellent outside ambiance, if it's a nice summer night the group table is the place to sit. On a cooler night, the comfortable sofa's inside are cozy and great for a couple, or a couple of friends. The bartender is attentive and ready to serve, friendly and quick to make your drink. The food, well, you probably won't be coming back for the food. Granted, I only tried two things on the menu, but we were here for a long night of catching up and planned on making it a night of sampling many things on the menu. The shrimp were cold and over seasoned, we each ate 1 before sending it back. The foie gras dish was a terrine of foie gras and had the thinning two slivers on top of a bed of apples and a crunchy nut concoction. We weren't even sure we were eating foie gras, the bartender had to point it out. With two strikes from the kitchen to start off, we ordered another round, enjoyed our drinks and then departed to find a better meal down the street. It's gotten enough of a buzz that it's worth going back on another night to give the kitchen a second change, especially considering the ambiance and great date-night potential, but my first taste of Talula's Garden was not a pleasant one.

I enjoyed my meal, but sadly, my companion was unable to eat anything because he is allergic to dairy products. It would be fantastic if vegan options could be added to your menu. We had to go elsewhere for him to find food, and I won't return to a restaurant where we cannot both eat. Good coffee, good scones, good breakfast sandwich -- but nothing was fantastic or different. Nice, restful atmosphere. Open & airy setting. Friendly and accommodating staff. I appreciated being given a coffee mug to refill as needed. I don't think it's acceptable to use day old bread for sandwiches "because it's just going to get re-heated anyway". Bad business decision, folks!

Let me preface this by saying I chose this location to shoot my engagement photos due to the consistent brand that Talula delivers at all of their locations. Being that this is my first time and hopefully last time to shoot engagement photos, I was a bit hesitant at first, to shoot inside a public restaurant. The staff there was extremely gracious and accommodating to all our needs. They delivered us snacks to use as props for our photos. We finalized our shoot with an unforgettable meal of course. My highlight was the raw chilled tuna crudo with lime salt and summer melons. I can't even describe what all my taste buds were feeling with each bite. To top off our magical night they honored our occasion with a "happy engagement" message on our dessert tray. The Fig mascarpone parfait, what can I say other that it's the best dessert concoction served in a cup that can only be rivaled by Barbuzzo's salted caramel budino. What an unbelievable experience and kudos to the entire staff for making this a comfortable environment.

Over the past year, Talula's has become my favorite place in Philadelphia. There are so many things I could say, however, nobody wants to hear a ridiculously long review so here is the TL;DR: -stunning, local, seasonal dishes -expertly executed, expertly delivered - what impresses me more than the food is the always attentive, but not too attentive, friendly, and KNOWLEDGEABLE servers. Literally everyone who works there, i feel like i can stop and ask about a certain cheese on my slate and will get the back story of the cow and what he ate in what region before producing the milk for this cheese. I love it -Some people complain that the portion size to price ratio can get a little ridiculous. I think those people fail to realize you aren't paying to huge portions. You are mostly paying for the creativity, and the expertise of preparedness of the dishes. A mid-spring weekend brunch outside, or a fall season dinner outside at talula's cannot be beat, in my opinion.

I am less than thrilled with this place. Knowing that I was coming in town this weekend to see family, I wanted to make reservations here as my mother has been dying to try it. I called about 2-3 months ago to reserve a table for 6 for Saturday evening. The lady that I spoke with was incredibly pleasant and told me it was a little far out and to check back in mid February. So, like a fool, instead of insisting, I did just what she said. She sounded reasonable enough! Mid February rolls around, interesting, still tells me that there are no tables available yet. I try again...and again...and again...until finally the week of my trip home to Philly arrives. Still no availability. So strange I thought! So I called Talula's to see what was up. And I was met with the response "Oh, we take reservations months in advance, this weekend has been booked solid for some time now' How interesting! When I called in January, you were not accepting reservations. Pretty disappointed that it's the week of and I now need to find new plans for my mom and dad's 60th birthday celebration. And guess what...every decent restaurant in the city is booked now. Dear Mom and Dad, I hope you like homemade treats that will hold you over until my next visit at Christmas. Thanks for nothing Talula. Thanks for nothing.

The fig gnocchi was outstanding...I'm extremely picky about pasta so I was debating not getting it,but it was my birthday and I was feeling adventurous so I went for it. The flavors were so complimentary and the gnocchi was so light. We got the swordfish and a cheese plate as well, which was also pretty good. It was my birthday so they brought me out a salted caramel shortbread thing...its like the know me! I'm a sucker for some good shortbread and this stuff was heavenly!

Back again and better than ever! It's been two years since I was at this Stephen Starr hot spot, right when it opened! I've gotta say, they really have it nailed now! Every dish on the menu didn't disappoint! We ended up going with the Cheesemonger's secret surprise stash, and it was fantastic! I don't think I could quote them back to you right now, but know that the toasted hazelnuts, the candied walnuts, super fresh raspberries and honey were phenomenal. Had one of the cocktails, the Day Tripper, a strawberry smash! Bourbon, strawberries, mint, amazing. Also enjoyed a nice little sample of one of the barnegat scallops in the celery and celery root chowder, perfectly cooked and seasoned! But alas, the piece de resistance! The Muscovy duck breast, perfectly cooked! And I'm going to be honest, the crisp chickpea crepe with sweet apricot and duck rillettes? Could quite possibly be the most amazing thing I've ever eaten. Ever. Duck confit and apricot? Out of this world! Killer service, excellent staff, definitely an A+ and will be headed back again!

Two days after a perfect Mother's Day brunch, I am still smiling just thinking about the day. I came here initially a couple months ago back in February for my birthday brunch. We had the long table in the back which was kick ass. I had a 1:30pm reservation and we had to wait until 2 to be seated, but the restaurant made sure we were taken care off once we sat down. The food was amazing. I got the creole brunch, they ran out of shrimp and had to substitute it with scallops ... did not bother me at all :). I was having a bad couple days before, and made sure to let the waitress know that my drinks needed to be extra strong ... she passed on the message to bartender and my drinks were just how I liked them from then on. Everything the table ordered was magnificent. It was all of ours first time there, and everyone was really satisfied and had an wonderful time. That's when I knew, I had to bring Mom here on her day. I made the reservations when I was first able to on open table. They called me a few days before to confirm, and left a message saying that if I did not call back by Saturday at 5pm to confirm my reservation would be cancelled. I quickly called back. Once we got there, I asked for us to be seated in the garden, and they promptly set up a table for us. We were seated within 5 minutes of getting there. The garden is very quaint, goes very well with the "vintage" feel of the restaurant. It is also completely in the shade, so I think even on a hot day sitting there would be good. The temperature was close to 80 degrees, but it was a little chilly (nice) sitting there. For our meal, we started out with Bialy & Lox. The lox spread was delicious, we all wanted more. The rest of the food was great, my dad got the burger, my brother got the filet and my mom and I both for the creole brunch. All of it came out fantastic, and everyone cleared their plates. Our server did not bother us at all, which I loved. He would come around once after bringing out each part of the meal, ask how it is and the let us be. We did not feel rushed in anyway, with it being mothers day and all. We all walked out of the meal full, but not stuffed and with big smiles on our faces. I think it was the combination of the atmosphere, the food and the great weather that really made it the perfect Mother's day brunch for the family

It had been a long time in between my visits here. I had come here during opening week years ago and finally made it back for brunch. It was one of the best brunches I have had in a while! And that says a lot in a city with amazing brunch spots. It's definitely on the pricier side but well worth it. My friends and I started with prosecco and a Bloody Mary. Best Bloody Mary! It's spicy, so be prepared. Food wise we started with the cheese plate. They have amazing cheeses here, I highly recommend- but a warning, the cheese plate is really only meant for 2 people....they are just lil pieces. For entree we got the omelette special (bacon, onions, Gruyere) and the monte cristo. The monte cristo was out of this world! The ham is very thinly sliced and plentiful, and a delicious cheese mixture, all sandwiched between french toast served with ketchup and maple syrup. Does it get any better?nope! We also got the bacon and biscuits on the side. Honestly, the bacon took this meal home. BEST BACON I've ever had in my life. A must try for brunch! Gorgeous restaurant, great service, amazing food.

Never been to Philadelphia and selected Talula's Garden based on Yelp reviews. Could not have found a finer place to dine. We had reservations for 4, but arrived about 30 minutes early. Not a problem, we were seated immediately. The atmosphere was casual elegant; the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Their answers to our questions were precise, but not rehearsed, and showed a true knowledge of the offerings. Their invited suggestions in selecting between several items, including wines, were excellent and led to a dining experience we will always remember. Talula's Garden should be on everyone's list of places to experience. When we return to Philadelphia, we will be sure to return to Talula's Garden.

Must be said in the beginning - the cheeses are delicious. If I had a re-do of my visit to Talula's Garden, I would just order wine and cheese. Great selection, expertly paired with jams/nuts/fruits/etc, and damn tasty. I found the rest of the menu to be a little too plain. We shared a bunch of small plates and 2 'first' plates. Everything was well cooked, but I didn't experience any great flavors or 'OH MY GOSH THIS IS AMAZING' bites. As a vegetarian, I did not taste any of the meat or fish dishes, so I cannot speak to them. Perhaps they left the 'BAM!' to the proteins? Twee ambiance, good service, and the food was fine. I was hoping for a little more for the price. I doubt that I'll be back, but if I do return, I am going cheese plate all the way!

One of my favorite Starr Restaurants in Philly, which serves awesome American food. So far everything I've ordered there was fabulously made. Lovely neighborhood. Sweet staff. Great for family and friends gathering in its super adorable garden. Just make sure to make reservations in advance ~

I've heard nothing but raves about Talula's Garden so I came for a special dinner with some friends. It's a well appointed restaurant with friendly service and well, outrageously high prices. But, as I said, this was a special dinner, so we ordered the pan roasted mushrooms, the heirloom tomatoes and a cheese board to share. We asked for the bacon bits to be kept out of the breadcrumbs but they still tasted like bacon. I'm not sure why someone would want to destroy the delicate natural flavor of heirloom tomatoes with overpowering bacon. The mushrooms were overpowered by the pesto. Overpowering seemed to be the theme so far so I went with a light sounding pasta dish. Hand-Torn Fresh Pasta Ribbons, Summer Squash, Whipped House-Made Ricotta, and Fragrant Summer Truffle was the exact opposite --- boring. Oh, where was the pesto from the other dish to give this some flavor? The chicken under a brick with yukon gold potatoes was heavy and .... sorry, but boring. The caper sauce had some acidity but lacked any complex flavor. A friend's grilled bluefish was paired with a tahini sauce which didn't seem to match. The braised lamb neck another friend ordered was excellent, but the large plate was still more of an appetizer. With desserts at ten dollars a piece and above we decided to share two to end the evening on a sweet note. The summer fruit crostata was excellent but the s'mores cake was an exercise in over the top sweetness. Despite the small (no, make that tiny) portion we didn't finish it. With a little wine and a generous tip (the service was fine) our meals came to over a hundred dollars each. I wanted to stop for a good slice of pizza on the way home.

Many other reviewers have done a lovely job of describing the food and ambiance - both of which were wonderful. My review, and my justification of 5 stars, is based on the service. Things didn't start too well ... We arrived for our reservation on Christmas Eve, plans made after scouring Yelp and personal recommendations from friends about Talula's Garden. We were led to a table in the rear of the restaurant with a common problem -- banquette seat on one side, giant rectangular table and one seat with it's back to the room. This is always an uncomfortable arrangement - too far away from each other for a romantic dinner let alone conversation, and the weird feeling that someone could sneak up on you from behind. Josh, the manager came by to check on us when he noticed our appetizers weren't being eaten and thoughtfully interpreted my partner's non-verbals as not being too happy. We discussed with him the physical arrangements of the table and settled in for another awkward dinner since we couldn't speak to each other. Moments later, Josh came to our table, collected our drinks, and moved us. Such a simple thing, but so considerate! We were moved to a nice table that was turned the short way so we were close and in the transition between two sections so we both felt we could see what was happening around us. I can't adequately describe how much this improved our experience. Thoughtfully doing the right thing, with no fanfare. If only customer service like this existed everywhere, but since it doesn't it makes Talula's stand out even more. Thank you to Josh and Tatiana, our server, for not only providing a delightful dinner for us, but acting to save us from what might have been a disappointing experience.

Current and trendy restaurant with many eco-friendly choices. The garden is absolutely beautiful and worth looking at from the street if you're in the area. I did enjoy my dining experience but just feel like there's better things you can get in Philly for this price range. Some highlights: -tasty cheeses/great cheese arrangments -my duck breast entree was delicious, just not as filling as I had expected for the price point. My date felt the same way about her striped bass -Presentation is great... waitors have a little spheal about their favorite plates and they poured the sauce on the bass just to add some class.. kinda really enjoyed that. So all in all, a beautiful place that is definitely worth checking out, but it takes a toll on your wallet and it doesn't quite make the list of my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia.

Really liked this place for a lot of reasons, and there is very little NOT to like. The pros: This was a wonderful meal - high-quality ingredients, interesting preparations, creative presentation. Friendly and attentive service. The cons: The excessive crowding of the place on a weeknight (can't imagine what it's like on a weekend) and how close they pack the tables in; the prices. Yes, it is a pretty restaurant with a pretty nice ambiance, but sitting three inches from another couple detracts from that ambiance for me. Bill was $150 incl. tip for two people - one round of drinks, two entrees, a shared salad, and shared dessert. This is definitely on the high side. It's food, people -- no matter how they "source" it (this term so gets on my nerves!!). I think this place is unique for Philly and they are able to justify NYC prices as a result. Good for them. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to anyone looking for a special occasion place in Center City Philly.

A SUPER beautiful dining experience, not to mention yummy :) The restaurant has an awesome air to it - comfortable, artsy, and natural. We sat inside (though the outside dining garden looked very cute) and I loved all of the detail from the various walls, the cool tables, the pretty plates, and really cool restroom. Split a Spanish cheese plate- delish!, and then had the scallops and swordfish for dinner (my Mom and I). Both were bursting with new flavors and cooked to perfection. A real treat, from start to finish, with great service as well! Totally recommend this yummy restaurant!

Went there for the Valentine's Day, I was so excited to try the food. We ordered drinks first, I got virgin Bloody Mary, the horseradish taste was seriously strong that gave me headache and burned my stomach, I literally had two sibs and couldn't take it anymore. The cheese plate was nice; however nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered two appetizers and two main courses. All the food had one weird bitter taste, I don't know may the skillet or the cookware they've used. I had high expectations for this place because of the reviews. I wouldn't say that I won't go again, I'd give it a second chance; but definitely not in a special occasion like Valentine's Day or so.

My husband and I have dined here for dinner numerous times, and it is always excellent. However, this past weekend we decided to try the brunch, and I am so glad we did. We had the cheese plate to start and it was excellent. My husband had the Breakfast Burger as an entree and I had the omelette. Both were amazing, but I have to say the Breakfast Burger was EXCELLENT! The portions are a very decent size. We usually do not order dessert, but everything was so good that we decided to each get our own dessert. I ordered the Chocolate Candy Bar, and my husband ordered the Apple Crisp. Both were amazing!!!!!! If you are looking for a good brunch place in the city with great ambiance, Talula's Garden is definitely the place to go. Another plus is they have outdoor seating with heaters. The ambiance is awesome, and on a sunny fall day it doesn't get any better. I would definitely recommend Talula's for any occasion. From a brunch for two to a birthday or special celebration; it is definitely the place to go!

While the weather is still nice, sit outside, its a quaint yet whimsical garden seating area. You might be in the heart of the city, but the garden makes the vibe quite laid-back and relaxing, not to mention, beautiful! This review is for the brunch. I love everything about Talula's- from their coffee, the pretty antique-like dishes and cups, friendly service and most importantly, the food. Whenever I see doughnuts on a menu, I immediately do my happy dance and the sweet ricotta doughnuts did not disappoint. Crisp on the outside and delicately moist on the inside. Another eye-opener on the menu was the truffle scented duck confit with egg and duck hollandaise. You can't tell me by just reading that, it wouldn't make you excited? Well, it did for me and the dish was outstanding. The duck and potatoes were crispy and perfectly salty. Only wished there was more hollandaise because it was so good. My friend order the hanger steak and eggs. I couldn't help but steal a few bites. Her dish was definitely worth the work out we did prior to coming. Everything tasted farm-to-table fresh. Excellent brunch, but I am looking forward to having dinner in the near future!

Everyone's food was fantastic. The vegetarian meal was exquisite - even the non-veggies raved about it. The servers were very friendly and helpful. Great service. Most of all, the food was so colorful and had loads of different flavors in every dish. Talula's Garden might be Steven Starr's best.

Delicious food, starting from the home made brioche with onion butter to the delicate chocolate dessert. A lovely atmosphere, warm efficient service, many great options on the menu. I had scallops with caramelized cauliflower and special ricotta cheese appetizer with clementines and olives. yum. wine good. We loved the place. Will be back. They have a very interesting cocktail selection. We generally stick with wine, but the choices looked good.

This is a great spot if you are looking for local, fresh food. The offerings change seasonally. Highly recommend the World Travel cheese platter! I have only had dinner here - several times and they were all wonderful. A great dining place in the late evening outside.

My hubby and I ate here a little over a week ago and we loved it. Can't stop thinking about delicious everything was. The service was "spot on" and very attentive. The garden area, bar, cheese monger station were really pretty. Great abidance. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone I know going to Philadelphia. And next time I'm in Philly - I will eat there again.

Outstanding spot, but with a MAJOR WARNING!!! If you're not a "foodie", someone looking for a quiet place where you can conduct business without engaging servers, don't even CONSIDER this place. That's not what Talula's is about. It's an interactive food experience. They know the menu and can discuss in fine detail the way the ingredients play off each other and the cheese boards... my lord, what a descriptive explanation (get note pad out and know where DiBruno's is located, folks). Absolute top quality food, outstanding service, but this place is for FOODIES, it's not a romantic spot, a place for a business dinner or, really anything but a food adventure.

The atmosphere is really pretty especially the garden. It's very busy even on a monday so it's best to make reservations. The cheese plates are out of this world, they have a lot of exotic choices but my favorite so far is the truffle temor! Yummm! The brioche they give is also fantastic. The main dishes I didnt care too much for. I recommend the foie gras and the mint straciatella ice cream. Staff is very professional and friendly. Overall it's a nice place and I would come back for the cheese plate and dessert.

I absolutely love this place. I have not had a bad meal here. I am a vegetarian and often have special requests (and my ask a ton of questions about the menu) that Talula's handles without hesitation. From brunch to dinner, you can not go wrong. The atmosphere is just so pleasant as well. I had the ribbon pasta and a side of broccoli at my last visit and want to go back and get it again. The pasta was fresh and just delicious. The broccoli was the perfect amount of spicy. I could eat broccoli like this every day! Don't miss out on the cheese board or dessert! So so so good!

Trendy restaurant, good atmosphere for groups, friends, or colleagues...great food, from appetizer to entree to dessert. Highly recommend the Eight Cheeses of Distinction, Pan-Roasted Black Pearl Salmon, and Fried Fingerling Potatoes. The Sweet Little Ricotta Doughnuts, Rose Scented Chocolate Tart, and Bananas Foster Crepes are really good desserts!

My first time here was great. The service was impeccable and everything was great, from the wine and appetizer to dessert. So I pretty much came back here with expectations. The staff, like the first experience, were very nice. The sweet corn soup was amazing, but I did not really care for the butternut squash tortellini. The ginger/pear creme brulee was very tasty. It was not your traditional creme brulee that comes in a shallow dish. It was just two dollops of something that tastes like mascarpone cheese topped with two caramelized sugar crisps. Even though I did not care for the tortellini, that wasn't not why I took away a star. First, the service is very swift, but too swift may be a bad thing.... like taking away someone's side dish when they were not finished with it or wanted a box. I was at the restroom at the time, but when I got back my friend said that they had taken it so fast that it pretty much went unnoticed. Obviously the server didn't bother asking if we wanted it boxed. This is insanely annoying to me that a server could be this negligent and/or presumptuous. This actually annoyed me so much I want to give it a three stars, but I decided it wasn't entirely fair to have the team taking the hit for one person's one wrong doing. This actually happened to my family and I at the Morton's Steakhouse in Pittsburgh. We were all immersed in a conversation we didn't notice that the waiter took away appetizers we were not finished with. We never went back after that. That's how annoying this behavior is. Another thing about this place is there is their meat selection. I was surprised to find that the second time chicken was not the menu anymore. Chicken is also pretty standard. Since they change their menu, I would call in and ask about the menu to see if there's something (fish, chicken, duck, pork, etc) that you'd like/in the mood for.

Overall: Great. One star knocked off for two reasons: (1) Insanely salty. Not everything, but the charred broccoli side was super heavy on the sodium, and the fish entree was so salty it was hard to eat. (2) While everything was tasty, none of the entrees blew my mind. The warm brioche was to die for, and the cocktails were delish. The cheese assortment was just fantastic. I did it for the novelty, but ended up surprised by how much fun it was tasting the various types and comparing notes with my dinnermates. Service was friendly and attentive. Decor is second-to-none.

I've waited AGES to try Talula's Garden and finally got lucky enough to snag a table for my bday dinner with the family. The verdict: there aren't too many restaurants in Philly that I've felt compelled enough to repeat, but I'd love to return to sample its spring/summer offerings! The food: Very seasonal and locally sourced. Interesting and creative menu items, all well executed (except the pork chop which was slightly overcooked). Talula's Garden has an extensive cheese menu - make sure you get something off it, we got the masters cheese platter and it was delicious. Highlights from the winter menu (March 2014): applewood smoked salmon salad, Hudson Valley foie gras, seared day boat scallops and duck breast. Service: All the restaurant staff were super friendly. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food, especially the cheeses. Reservation tip: It's damn near impossible to get a table for 5 here. I tried to a month in advance and failed. This seemed to be the case at just about any other Philly resto I tried though...is it a Philly thing?! Miracle of miracles, I was able to get a table for 4 much more easily, just a day in advance.
What are the chances we spotted this restaurant to dine at and it was another Stephen Starr restaurant? The previous time we went to Morimoto's. I guess in Philly it would be high! We were attracted to the farm to table concept and thought it was be a good place for a simple but good meal. We were very surprised by the quality and level of the food served. The warm brioche with butter it was a nice start. We also a bottle of a 2013 Pascal Renaud Macon Village White Burgundy it was young but it had a nice wonderful bouquet hint of fruits and finished well. So happy with the wine! For starters we had the two specials: the grilled Percebes and the veal tongue. We had not tried the Percebes before it was quite exciting and I would say it was quite to awesome to try it at Talula's. The percebes is a prized shell fish in Europe that could go as high as $125 per kg. Its tubular shape was puzzling we were not sure how best to eat it. The waiter who served us did not quite explained it well. Basically the outer "sock" had to be removed and the sweet juicy flesh was just heavenly! The veal tongue was brine for 48 hours it was served with roasted cauliflowers in a delectable sorrel sauce what a great combination the tongue was tender and delicious! For main courses, we had the crispy bone-in pork belly charred cabbage leaves and the scallop with kaffir lime leaves. First time I saw a pork belly served bone-in it was charred nicely outside and soft inside the cabbage was so caramelized it was very tasty! The scallops too in a curried foam and the kaffir lime leaves it was a very good dish but not as good as the pork belly. We chose to order the cheese next they had an amazing list of cheese platters or combinations. We asked for 5 French cheeses that included the Epoisse and Roquefort. It was such a good meal we really enjoyed our dinner I would definitely go back. The farm to table at Talula's Garden really puts Founding Farmers to shame.

Wonderful brunch option, if you can get a reservation or if you're lucky enough to walk in and get a table. We came here the morning after my best friend's bachelorette party when we were craving a good brunch. They were totally booked up (though most tables were empty when we came in--but they were all occupied soon after). As per the hostess's suggestion, we sat at the bar, and I don't think it detracted from the experience. The bartender was very friendly and nice, though he had to check with the waiters about a few menu questions. No big deal. Our food came out quickly and was quite delicious. Try the donuts on the menu--they're scrumptious. I'd like to come back and get to sit in the garden, but this was a great meal nonetheless.

If a restaurant is packed on a Monday night, that's a sure sign that you should stop to have dinner there! And after eating at Talula's Garden, I'm not surprised by the popularity. All of the food really tasted farm fresh, with layers or flavor. My favorite bites of the night were the duck breast over farro with roasted vegetables. It was perfect! The restaurant is very large, with high ceilings and beautiful light fixtures. The highlight is the outdoor garden/patio, which gave me quite a few ideas for my own outdoor space. They turned what would basically have been an empty lot into a garden oasis that has a 45 minute wait on Monday evenings! Loved the christmas lights in the vines for that extra romantic twinkle. The service was great, and the food was reasonably priced for the atmosphere that we experienced. Love love loved it!

Amazing! I have been wanting to go here forever and it did not disappoint. We didn't have reservations but went right at 5pm and snagged a seat at the bar. The bartender - Vina - was great! Cheese board - "Not your grandmother's" cheese was delish. We shared to apps and two pasta dishes. The pork sausage app was amazing! Pasta was divine! All and all great experience and will be back. Def worth it!
Dinner (8:45) Nice Crowd, Great Ambiance and Decor, Impeccable service and with all that the fresh food satisfied every tastebud we had. (Squash Soup, Cheese Platter, Grilled Chicken and Fried Apple Pie)

I've been to Talula's Garden about 5 times, brunch, lunch, and dinner. I always trust this restaurant and always recommend this place to people who is visiting Philadelphia for the first time. I know we will be treated very well and they will feed us well too. The parking is inconvenient but i am willing to spend 25 dollars for parking to go to this place!!!

Went here last week and I must tell you I wasn't disappointed. I was a little nervous when the first course came out, there were 6 of us and they brought out 2 plates of the potato pancakes and smoked salmon. The portion was pretty small, but it was really good. Next course came out and settled my worry, it was wild mushroom risotto and it was delicious. The taste was incredible and it was seasoned perfectly. It also came out at the perfect time after the second course. Third course was almost as great as the second. Quail stuffed with stuffing and fall squashes. It was texturally amazing with a little crunchy of the stuffing, the savory taste of the quail cooked perfectly tender and the soft squash. Fourth course was a cheese plate and it was more like the first course in that it was 2 plates for 6 people but they were very tasty. Fifth course was an insanely good doughnut that I didn't even want to eat but couldn't resist! The food was incredible, my only complaint would be that I would rather have my own plate even with smaller portions rather than have to share with everyone. I'm just greedy like that! Overall I would recommend strongly!

Words cannot express how delicious the food is. Just go.. get a cheese plate and savor the experience. The brioche rolls that come with the meal in themselves are worth going for.

As someone who's spoiled for choice when it comes to dining in the Bay Area, I'm absolutely impressed by Philadelphia's burgeoning dining scene. On a recent visit to Talula's Garden, I was heartened to see a slice of home greeting me, in the form of Bay Area slow-food pioneer Alice Waters's words adorning the central dining room: "a garden brings life and beauty to the table." It's clear that owner Aimee Oxley and executive chef Sean McPaul have taken this philosophy to heart with a menu highlighting regional, seasonal ingredients. Oxley's cheese expertise is one of her selling points, and there are half a dozen plates to choose from. We chose the master plate for its variety, and indeed, it was an enjoyable array of cheeses made from goat, cow, sheep, and buffalo milk from the world over. The crab salad and a side of marinated beets were a refreshing way to ease into the main courses, which in our case were hanger steak and salmon. Overall, everything felt fresh and satisfying going down, without leaving any heaviness or excessive flavors. Ricotta doughnuts and excellent Haitian French press coffee (sourced from La Colombe, a favorite local cafe and coffee roaster) were an excellent way to round out a delightful dinner. Inside, the ambience is both spacious and airy, with high ceilings, and also rustic and intimate, with wooden tables and barrels. In particular, the bar manages to combine bucolic charm with just a hint of hipster trendiness. Outside, there's a beautiful, cozy garden dining area that's especially beautiful when lit up at night. Last but not least, Jenna, our server, was exceptionally sweet, engaging, and attentive. Overall, a highly enjoyable experience and a restaurant we'd emphatically recommend to locals and visitors alike.

Amazing atmosphere and fantastic food. I am vegetarian and got a cheese board with my table, as well as the potato gnocchi. Everything was just super flavorful. I heard likewise from my other guests. There were no dinner time reservations so we took a 9:30 reservation. Just a heads up!

Ambiance- 5 stars Service- 5 stars Food- 4.5 stars Seating- 4 starts Drinks- 3 stars Talula's has great ambiance and fantastic service. Just the right blend of suggestions and "checking in" from our server. The two top tables are a little close together so it can be a little annoying at times (the couple next to us kept taking pictures of each other so the flash was annoying us, for example.) Starters: Pan-Roasted Rhode Island Calamari: Amazing. I don't like fried calamari, if you are a fan of grilled/roasted or have never tried it--either way try this! Crispy Indian Spiced Pennsylvania Lamb Belly- This was very tasty as well, not a "must have" but very good Main: New England Cod- Cooked perfectly, very tender the grilled beans mixed well Pan-Seared Chesapeake Striped Bass- Cooked perfectly, good size - would get this again for sure Sides: Roasted Mushrooms Galore: Someone else mentioned this and I didn't listen and ordered it anyway- some bites are out of this world, others taste like a salt lick. This could be because I don't know much about mushrooms? Maybe some are salty. I don't know, but I just took a few scoops and left the rest. Drinks: The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is the prices on the wine. 2 glasses of wine @ $15 each is as much as a main dish here... and the pour was VERY small. We tried the margarita and strawberry bourbon drink, both were good, but not the best thing ever for the price. I would skip the alcohol and just enjoy an awesome meal.

First trip to Philadelphia and a highlight was our time at Talulas. Great ambiance both inside and out although we recommend eating in the terrace. It was beautiful and romantic. Our server was attentive and very knowledgeable. We loved every course. The cheese plate was amazing. Our meals were fantastic. If it wasn't a 6 hour drive we would be here to eat often! We keep telling people at home about Talulas. Would recommend without hesitation.

This place is pricey, well worth the first class food and service. They had a $100 pp menu sampler which looked great but we decided on the ala carte menu. The waitress will recommend beers and wines, I enjoyed the inversion IPA she suggested. The International cheese plate is awesome, served with crackers and bread- both which are homemade. We had the heirloom tomato salad, very very fresh and tasty and big enough too share. We tried the beef tartare, which was a good size for three to share but I would not order again. It was tasty, but looked like hash and seemed overly pickled and salty, still tasty but I would prefer to spend money on something else. We had the squash pasta with ricotta and it was fabulous. My son hates ricotta but loved this Italian creme sauce, and the homemade noodles were delish. We then tried the roast chicken with a olive sauce, and potatoes. The chicken was perfectly browned to a crisp but the sauce was made with green olives, so it lacked the salty olive flavor I was expecting. The chicken was prepared perfectly , I would have enjoyed it more without the olive sauce, the portion was big enough to share. Finally we had the broccoli side dish, perfectly cooked but way too much crushed red pepper, just a little less and it would be perfect. I gave 5 stars because the service , ambiance (a little loud) , creative menu were and portions were worth 5 stars!! The waitress went next door and grabbed to go cups for our coffee. The busboy separated our leftovers in neatly package bags, and both were very attentive. Next time I will return for dessert.

Yesterday evening was my 3rd time visiting Talula's Garden, and as expected, Talula's did not disappoint. I went with two of my girlfriends - the one friend had been before, but only for brunch and the other was a Talula's neophyte. With the ever changing menu, it is next to impossible to go back and get the exact same thing that you previously ordered, which is difficult for a person like me, a total creature of habit. This go around I ordered the following: the warm sweet corn soup (so delish - and the jalapeno had the perfect kick positioned against the sweet corn) and the chicken liver mousse parfait w/ figs, shallots & mushrooms (I'm a sucker for anything chicken liver)! My fellow diners ordered the duck confit and the garden boullabaise - both were beyond pleased! Of course we had to save room for dessert - I ordered the pear & ginger scented creme brulee (a deconstructed & tasty approach to creme brulee) and the rest of the table ordered the baked cinnamon apple charlotte and the butterscotch pudding! As they say, sometimes the best things in life are free - as the crowd pleaser was the warm complimentary bread that came out in the beginning of our meal. We remarked at how yummy it was and our uber friendly waitress came back w/ round two of buttery bread! Please mam, can we have some more?

This review is about sitting at the outdoor bar area for one round of drinks. Since we didn't stay for multiple rounds or dinner, I am giving it 3 stars though given what the food looked like as it passed by, I could see that this may be better than 3 stars. After spending the day walking around the city and checking out some of the historical sites, we stopped by this place as we were planning to walk to another adult beverage establishment (The Perch Pub). Walking by the restaurant, we noticed this quiet (and empty) garden bar and dining area. We made our way to the bar, where there were a handful of occupied seats. After looking over an extensive drink menu, I chose the Rainmaker which was a blackberry julep. It was quite refreshing on a warm day during happy hour. My friend got the margarita which had a spiced salt on the rim (spices included coriander and pink peppercorn). We both left very satisfied and continued on our exploration of the city.

I've been wanting to try this place out for a while as part of my mission to try all the best brunch places in Philly. Tried this during one of my last weekends living in Philly - and it seems I've saved one of the best for last. I'm a tough critic of brunch, so 4 stars is excellent. Ambiance - it was a gorgeous late-April day and we sat outside. I felt like I was in a garden and we faced a mini waterfall of sorts. Literally my DREAM environment for brunch Service - our waitress was super busy, but also really friendly and even remembered the small stuff like lighting the little gas light on our table The 3 dishes we ordered were all great in terms of taste, portions, and presentation - Lemon scented whipped ricotta blintzes - basically they are ricotta stuffed crepes but topped with fresh strawberries and rhubarb -- such a treat (although probably like 1000 calories...) - Cornmeal hotcakes - I only had a bite of this but this was definitely not what I was expecting for "hotcakes" - they're 3 incredibly sweet pancakes - very creamy and featherly tasting if that makes sense. Again, this one is probably also 1000 calories, especially since it's topped with bananas, cinnamon, candied walnuts. - Eggs benedict - A staple to compare all brunch places - generous portion of peas and home fries - only had my friend's opinion to go off, but apparently it was delicious Next time will be sure to stop in for dinner - Hopefully I'll upgrade to 5 stars after that experience!

My wife and i came here for her birthday in june. the weather was wonderful and we had planned to sit in the garden; however, once we got the we notice that due to the way the wind was blowing into the garden area, it was forming a wind tunnel. so even though it was beautiful out there we opted for indoor seating. the inside was equally as stunning. high ceilings and doorways make it feel grand and very spacious. the decor was beautiful and up-to-date. the gentleman who waited on us was great! very knowledgeable about their cheese platers and wines. He didn't even look at his pad or anything. i was impressed. We started with one of the cheese platters. It was unbelievable. I am a huge fan of blue cheese, so we got one with a few different kinds. Different textures and tastes, it was a great experience. I had the lamb and my wife had the duck. we got a side of potatoes to go with it. everything was so good. both proteins were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were creamy and delicious. For dessert we got the deconstructed s'more. Chocolate molten cake, smoke flavored ice cream, graham cracker crumble = amazing! This is a must go

This is my kind of place. Beautiful yet homey atmosphere. Dishes that are made with local ingredients. Food that is fresh and delicious. If I were rich, I'd eat here alot more often. Visited Talula's for a bridal shower, which happened to be my first time at this spot (despite wanting to visit for years now). The atmosphere/location cannot be beat. Located right on Washington Square, this restaurant is half dining room and half garden. And when I say garden, I mean GARDEN. In all caps. It's like one of those fancy gardens that you see in magazines or on HGTV. It's absolutely gorgeous. The food is equally as impressive as the ambiance. The menu changes with the season, but when I visited I had a shrimp dish over a roasted red pepper mixture, a pasta dish made with orechiette and vegetables in a lemon sauce, a cheese plate, and the ricotta doughnuts. I thought everything I ate was very good but I just kept thinking how ridiculously expensive each dish was (even though I was a guest and wasn't footing the bill). I think this place would be perfected for a low-key girls night- get some wine and a few cheese boards and sit out in the garden. Service was excellent-- our waiter patiently answered all of our questions about menu items and didn't act as if we were complete idiots (cough: like I was treated at Vetri : cough). He even gave us some background on where they farmed one of the ingredients we asked about (ramps... ever heard of them? I hadn't until then!) Overall, this spot has a lot of the characteristics of a Starr joint- nice atmosphere, good food, and high prices. But it's definitely a great option if you have some extra greenbacks to spend and are a fan of the farm-to-table concept.

Save your $$$. I really wanted to like this place with all my heart, however, between the price of the food, the quantity of food received and the taste, it's just not worth the trip. PROS: Ambiance-Starr restaurants never fall short on ambiance. The restaurant is beautiful and their garden, quaint. Service- Lindsay (I think that was her name) was knowledgeable and prompt. Cheese Plates: All of their cheese plates give beautiful presentation and are garnished with walnuts, raw honey YUM), grapes, apples and apple butter (so good) I would definitely recommend the World Traveler. Kale Cavitelli-very different but definitely not an appetizer to share as it was way too small. CONS: I had the Foraged Spring Salad, which at $14 was extremely underwhelming and soggy. The Painter cocktail I ordered was a $12 fizzy lemonade and the 3 ounce pour of Rose made me $12 poorer. By no means am I a cheapskate but when I'm paying $12 for a glass of wine, I'm expecting a GLASS of at least 6 ounces. After the second drink, all I wanted to do was go home and eat a cheese-steak. This place was highway robbery at its finest.

Wonderful restaurant, the design is elegant yet relaxing, the hostess was warm and seated us promptly. We had questions about the wines and some appetizers, and our waiter was very helpful without being intrusive. The food was very good, maybe a 4.5 instead of a 5 but the overall experience was outstanding. Highly recommended.

Great food - outrageously small portions. Stopped by for a special dinner with my girlfriend. The prices for everything are a bit out of control, but I knew what I was getting myself into ahead of time. Everything was tasty, but I left hungry $140 later. Wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for more than tapas sized plates.
Actually it's a strong 4.5 stars. We recently had a fabulous early dinner here on a lovely summer evening. Like most people have written here, the place is gorgeous both inside and out. The outside dining is cozy, quiet and lovely. I am actually going to steal Some of their garden decorating ideas for my own garden. I didn't think ANYONE that we dealt with was pretentious and I was waiting to be "hungry after I left" (like I read in most of the low star reviews"). I am assuming Applebee's and Olive Garden are where most if these people frequent if they were dissatisfied with the portion side. Or maybe they saved up their money to come to talulas garden and were expecting leftovers for those prices? Lemme tell you, I'm a girl who can eat... Well. After a beef tartare starter and the pork belly main, not only could I not finish, but I was so full I had to pass on the beer at the concert we attended afterwards! The portion sizes were way more generous than people led on to. The food was amazing (although I have to say my pork belly was my least favorite out of all 6 dishes we tried that night... The chimichurri was a bit too salty and a bit too acidic but I'm biased bc we've spent significant time in Argentina and Uruguay and make our own at home). I thought I would prefer the pork belly on the bone but now I know I don't. But the beans were tender w a bit of chew and a nice refreshing touch to the fatty belly. The beef tartare was excellent. I still prefer a hand chopped tartare (textural thing for me), but I loved the flavor and thought the portion was excellent! The stars were the pastas and actually my dads bluefish. Excellently prepared. Packed with layers of flavor. Mmmmm. I'm excited to bring the hubs here... Maybe we we can enjoy the beautiful indoor tables!

I love this place! However it was tricky getting here because no where outside does the sign say talulas garden, hidden gem I guess. The most unique thing about this place is the backyard garden atmosphere which lights up at night. Perfect place for a romantic date. I had curry spiced tuna for starter and filet for main course, both were fantastic. Melted Chocolate brownie and hazelnut ice cream for dessert, what's not to love about chocolate and hazelnut.

Talula's garden is a beautiful space with a romantic outdoor setting and a low lit earthy indoor side. The brioche bread that comes with the meal is buttery, melt in your mouth good. Lamb belly appetizer was scrumptious. Tender lamb. Rabbit appetizer was amazing. The sauce it was in was earthy and delicious. Fresh pasta. They gave us a sample of Brie cheese with a fig in top of a cracker- it was awesome. The Brie was so smooth and mild. The entrees did not wow me as much. The rack if lamb was great. The sausage type lamb was okay. The veggies were a bit bitter. The scallop and prawn dish had a very good citrus broth with perfectly cooked scallops. The mushroom vegetable side was perfectly seasoned and tasted fantastic. Service was good. Friendly, polite people. I would definitely return and try some new things.
Talulas Garden is everything an exceptional restaurant should be and more! We managed to get a last minute reservation for 4 for Sunday brunch and inside the place was buzzing, but in no way felt crowded or rushed. The interior is a polished blend of designer "earthy" elegance. It's interesting, inviting and alluring all at once. The service was superb from the moment we arrived. The brunch menu was inventive, artistic - and WOW was it ever delicious. The flavors jump off the plate to surprise and delight - and without exaggeration - leave you begging for more. The outside courtyard garden is a rare jewel in a vast city, and we look forward to coming back in season to enjoy an al fresco experience Talula style. The valet parking service was an unexpected bonus, and after lunch, as our car was being retrieved we walked next door to 'Talulas Daily' for a peek, but that's a story for another day!!!

Do yourself a favor and get seated in the garden and prepare to be transported to a magical place with greenery around and twinkling lights above you. The service is attentive and our waiter had good knowledge of the menu. They specialize in food made with seasonal, locally sourced organic ingredients. We ordered a cheese platter, a pasta dish, chicken under a brick and a vegetable side dish. I was pretty impressed by their selection of cheeses which appears to be carefully curated. We got the Summer Stash and really enjoyed it. The bits and bobs on the platter like the jam and candies nuts were equally delightful. The spaghetti with crab was good but nothing to write home about. Next was the chicken entree which was perfectly cooked- golden crispy on the outside and juicy inside. However, it lacked cohesion with the herb caper sauce which accompanied it. The vegetable side dish of charred beans and mushrooms was very tasty and refreshing! Overall, one of the better options to dine in Philadelphia and I'll revisit again and again.

Great food, awesome people/staff, perfect location! We went for brunch and shared the pork chop and grits since I wasn't feeling all that great BUT for having a cold and taste buds being a little off, I still thought this mean was amazzzing dish! Environment is great, they are accommodating & super clean.. great experience overall. Will be back when I return to Philly!

I was surprised that this place fell a little flat for me. Having read so many good reviews, maybe I had inflated expectations. Who knows. In any case, this is purely a brunch review as I have not had dinner here. The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. I have no complaints about that. What an awesome space. The Sunday best cheese board was very, very good. Definitely order it if you're a cheese person. I got the shrimp and grits and my friends got the vegetarian benedict and the cornmeal hotcakes. Of the three, I'd say the veggie benedict was the winner. The flavors were fresh, lively, and balanced. My shrimp and grits meal was good, but I have had better at other (cheaper) establishments. I didn't care for the cornmeal hotcakes at all. They were extremely sweet. I thought my friend was going to start complaining of blurred vision and cold sweats and I might have to go beg some insulin from the kind folks at Pennsylvania Hospital. Service was okay. I'd call our waitress semi-attentive. My water glass was empty a few times and went unnoticed. She also seemed confused by my desire to use a gift card and my credit card to pay my portion of the bill. I see what they're going for with this place. It has a lot of potential. I'm hoping that if I go back for dinner I'll have a better experience. In the meantime, I'll stick to Farmicia or The Dandelion for this kind of brunch.

Awesome. Go right now and order the lobster salad and duck you will be in heaven. Everything that I've tasted has been wonderful from the cheese plate (masters) to the drinks. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with warm and welcoming garden setting. This would be a great place for a date, a group or to take your parents. My party of 8 walked away very satisfied and happy.

Remember the tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes?" Well, that something like the reviews of Talula's Garden. It seems that people will more than happily convince themselves that they see things that aren't there if it makes them a part of the crowd and a sycophant to the prestigious. Now, don't get me wrong. If you are satisfied with fairly mediocre foods set upon amazingly indistinguishable sides (despite the interesting ingredients printed on the menu served on a cloth-less table and surrounded by such noise as to render civil conversation impossible, then this is the place for you. Of course, if you have a liking for the finely prepared you may want to reconsider. We sampled the bass, the pork and the lamb. The bass, quite nice in taste and texture, was little more than one inch by three inches. Now, I am well aware of the cost of fine fish and all that goes into it preparation, but the serving was so small as to leave the dinner, dependent on this dish alone, tempted to stop for pizza or a hoagie on the way home. The lamb and the pork were adequate in size but both were somewhat on what might be called the chewy side. All three were served with something of a stew of mushy vegetables of like texture and taste. Fortunately we did not order a cheese platter as did the table next to us. When we saw the tray of mouse trap size morsels that run between 18 and 20 dollars we asked for our check and went home hungry. On the good side the service was most pleasant, but I do wish these hip places would dress their staff in uniforms. Even Mc Donald's does that.

This is really the best outdoor dining space in the city. I've also never had a dish I didn't like. Everything is so full of flavor and extremely fresh. Whether you do the tasting menu or stick to the full menu, you won't be disappointed. Service is perfect, informative, and attentive. Definitely one of my favorite places to dine.

Got the World Travel cheese plate and 3 of the family portion vegetable dishes to split with 5 other friends, and a half portion of gnocchi for myself - all delicious and very filling, and the complimentary brioche was amazing. Staff are great - very knowledgeable about the different dishes and cheeses - and the restaurant is beautiful! Good place to eat if you're willing to spend some money on quality and you're guaranteed to be full by the end!

Talula's is magical. It's the perfect mix of contemporary and rustic, masculine and feminine, formal and casual, familiar ingredients and new dishes. I didn't want to leave. We visited Talula's on a Thursday at about 8 and had no problem getting a seat at the bar, where the extremely helpful bartender recommended drinks and cheese. I never expect to get a ton of substance out of a cheese plate, but the Autumn selection had a number of samples, plus apples, nuts, puree, etc. The atmosphere was lovely and the people watching was fascinating. I can't wait to return and eat in the gorgeous garden!

Forget that this is a Starr restaurant (for all of you Starr-envy'ers and haters) as I will rate this gem on it's own merits. It's usually the chef that matters, and this Washington Square West eatery is deserving of maximum accolades. From the atmosphere to the service, from the creative menu through the food and presentation, this establishment ranks right up there with Vernick and Supper and any other eclectic spots you've been to in Center City. With necessary reservations confirmed, if you get there to have a drink at the bar beforehand, say a half-hour early, request the hostess to seat you outside in the first-come first-serve outdoor garden. By the time of our actual reservation time, our request was honored. Ivy and plants were strewn throughout the garden and walls, drinks in our hand and the very special server, Nalini, appearing tableside began our extremely pleasant evening. My friend started with their extra special Bellini, I had a taste and the taste was wonderful. A quaint, but varied bottled beer menu was sufficient for me. While sucking down the drinks we ordered a cheese plate. Each cheese was described to us when presented. I've also had one of the 7 cheese plates offered when I was here before, and each one was fantastic, and this time was no exception. What a lovely start to the dining experience. Appetizers were the Braised Rabbit Fazzoletti (pasta handkerchiefs) with confit cherry tomato, capers, herb pistou and toasted breadcrumbs. This was outrageous, so tasty and so decadent in flavor. My choice was the delightful crispy Indian Spiced Pennsylvania Lamb Belly with smokey eggplant dressed with a cucumber yogurt. This was off the charts mind-blowing in taste, texture, flavor combinations, et al. The entrees followed and although not as exceptional as the cheese and appetizers to date, they were excellent in their own right. The Pan-Seared Golden Spotted Tilefish, with sweet corn succotash, banana peppers (added a touch of heat), pole beans, and a custardy corn sauce was delightful. The Herb Baked, Line Caught Bluefish was unbelievably tender and fresh, light not oily at all. But the handmade potato gnocchi with Heirloom tomato 'Puttanesca' as the accompaniment side was a bit confusing as to the proper place with this fish dish. The texture of the gnocci did not contrast with the tender fish. This was one weak point in my opinion. The flavors were great, but it was like having two different entrees in one. Overall this is a wonderful place, and I have no problem with issuing Talula's 5 stars. I've been here before and I will be going again....end o' story!

I'm blown away by this place! Great food, service, decor and atmosphere! We had the burger, portobello Benedict , and strudel. All was delicious. The breakfast potatoes were so good. Def recommend having a cocktail too, spicy bloody was tasty. Best part was the fried peach pie, one of the best desserts ever.

Made reservations for a Sunday brunch, and it was pretty packed. Unfortunately, we didn't get to sit outside, but the interior decor was nice, too. My friend found this place on some article titled, "Philly's most beautiful restaurants" (or something like that). The service was friendly, but our waitress messed up two of our orders. It was strange. She was nice about it, and took the omelet off our bill (it had ham in it, and my friend is vegetarian). I ordered the PB&J donuts, which I loved. The fried potatoes, though, were a little on the greasy side and too crunchy for my taste (yes, I know they're fried, but still). We were introduced to the "bialy" here--we don't have that here in the West! We finished the meal with the pear creme brulee which we all enjoyed. The bathrooms were neat, and kudos to the Alice Waters quote...a little bit of Berkeley in Philadelphia! More than the food, the ambiance was the star.

I decided to try this place because I saw a posted picture of the ricotta donuts with huckleberry jam dessert---which was sooooo good. We even ate the remaining jam out of the cup. :) I had the carrot soup, which was refreshing & tasty and also had the fettucine with pesto sauce appetizer. The first few bites were great, but after all I tasted was salt! I couldn't finish it. Otherwise, my boyfriend's tuna appetizer was amazing & he reports it being the best tuna he's had. The drink, the Visionary, had such a unique and delicious taste. The bread that came with dinner was warm and similar to a croissant. The melted butter on top just made it perfect. Definitely would go back, but not ordering that fettuccine dish... I'd like to go back when it's warm... the outside is so cute! :)

Wonderful atmosphere and a friendly staff, which you have already read before. There are a couple things I want to mention that I didn't see in earlier reviews.... Tallula's doesn't open until 5p, so if you are looking for an early drink or happy hour you will have to go somewhere else. Actually there isn't a "happy hour" here at all. However, the wine and cocktail list both have a lot to offer. I look forward to trying Tallula's for brunch on a warm day as they have a nice outside seating area.

Celebrated my birthday here last night. Such a great ambiance, really beautiful!! The food is delicious. Had to wait about 30 minutes for a table outside, but it was definitely worth the wait. It seems to be busy every night of the week, so make a reservation. The service wasn't the best. The waitress and the bartender were not very friendly but overall the experience was excellent!

I was wowed by the gorgeous outdoor setting and service at Talulas. My bf & I arrived at Talulas on Friday night with reservations for 8:30. We specifically asked for an outside table and were happy to wait at the beautiful bar until one was ready. Setting: The bar is farm-trendy with really cool rustic looking light fixtures. The outside area is serene and romantic. It's full of plants and is beautifully lit up at night. Food: Everything ranged from good to really good. We started with the Master Collection cheese plate. You get 8 cheeses, explained in great detail that are arranged from easier to more pungent flavors. For our entrees I got the steak and my bf got the halibut...solid, no complaints. For dessert we got the ricotta donuts and the chocolate pudding tart. My favorite was the chocolate pudding tart, the sweet/salty combination is my jam. Drink: They have a wide selection of beer, wine, dessert wines and cocktails. If you like sparkling wine based drinks, I recommend The Artist. Our server was really helpful when I needed a dessert wine recommendation and even brought me a sample of sherry after I told her I didn't know much about it. Service: We got off to a bad start. We waited FOREVER for our cheese plate and first round of drinks. It was then explained to us (in person by the manager) that due to a computer glitch, our orders hadn't gone through. This was dealt with in a very classy and professional manner by the Talula's crew. Our cheese plate & first round of drinks were on the house, as well as a to-go bag of the Petite Cookie Collection dessert (which I highly recommend, by the way). The manager (Jen) even called me the next day after she realized that she'd forgotten to give me her business card. The food at Talula's is VERY good and well executed but nothing mind blowing. The beautiful setting and wonderful service bump up this review from 4 to 5 stars. This is a great spot for a romantic night out, especially if the weather is nice enough to sit outside.

Pricey so all I can afford is a glass of wine and a cheese board... But dining in green flower paradise is totally worth the expense

After such a memorable first experience I had high hopes but the sequel came up short in recreating the magic. The number one disappointment was the service throughout was simply never there. It turned into an over 2.5 hour dining experience (which I normally wouldn't mind but this was not a multi-course meal). The cheese boards are still my favorite in Philly hands down. By the time we finally received the one this night I couldn't even wait for the descriptions before chowing down. I opted for the trout main course which was flavorful but needed more lemon sauce or something else to complement it. The mushrooms side this night were nothing more than something I might saute up at home in butter, such a shame. No point in sticking around for dessert this time around, I just wanted to end this meal. Still a huge fan of the location, outdoor space and cheese board. I will just be wary if next time in the first 15 minutes after sitting the waiter is no where to be found.

To quote a friend, "If I can't have Talula's Table, I'll just have to take her Garden." I have to say that her garden was pretty damn tasty. All the food is incredibly seasonal and fresh. The mushrooms are absolutely divine. The duck, while the flavor combinations were fairly traditional, the intensity of said flavors was particularly notable and enjoyable. The fish was also very good. The brioche was AMAZING. I wanted to keep asking for more but I felt like a pig. The cocktails leave something to be desired but I suppose that is just the spoiled/jaded New Yorker in me talking. The service was great. The location was very nice. All in all, Talula's is a positive addition to the Philly dining scene.

The food was good but for my BF and my dad it wasn't enough food and they were both still hungry. Plus the waiter were OVER THE TOP when it came to explaining the food. By the time the apps finally arrived and the dude dropping off the food kept talking as we were trying to eat.

Talula's garden is, like its sister stores, simple culinary heaven. I've had the scallops, duck pappardelle, multiple cheese plates, and gnocci. The scallops and duck in particular were some of the best I've had. The beverage selection is diverse. The portions are quite good for the price. They treat you as if you are family, they even gave us caramels at the end of dinner without us ordering them. The service was truly first class without being loud or annoying. I think the interior design adds to the mellow mood, it's NOT like other delicious places in the neighborhood that are noisy and cramped.

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Excellent cocktails, chill but nice atmosphere, great staff, and literally the best gnocchi's I've ever had. And I am very picky when it comes to my gnocchi's.

Talula's has gotten better and better since it opened. It started too fussy, serving minuscule portions, but they corrected that and now it is just wonderful, fresh, farm to table fare,in one of the loveliest settings, inside or out, in Philadelphia. I often eat at the bar, as I did last night with a friend, and the bartenders are knowledgable and friendly. The charred bean side dish was delicious and creative. My trout was super flavorful, with a lemony compote. Perfect. My friend's fish (sea bass) was not as good. Seasonal tomato salad special was wonderful taste of summer. This is a gem in every way. Great for vegetarians or carnivores.

Loved it. This was one of the best brunches I've had in awhile, if not ever. This isn't your traditional eggs benedict spot or a place to get $6 eggs with meat and potato. It is, instead, an experience from beginning to end. The atmosphere is casual and inviting yet sophisticated. The service was top notch, not stuffy, and very attentive to water and coffee glasses the entire time. A key to quality service is the top-off of coffee after you've signed the check; our water and coffee remained fully attended-to until we left. I had the Fresh Baked Biscuits & Gravy with pan fried lamb sausage, tomato "gravy", and spicy hot pepper jam. Phenomenal. I could eat this every weekend. The biscuits were a touch dryer than I would have normally preferred on their own, but they worked perfectly well with the gravy and jam. This is one of those dishes that you will crave and I hope it doesn't disappear off the menu. The garden brunch with seared scallops and a farro salad, with veggies, and lemon and chive vinaigrette was also a favorite at the table. Four scallops seared perfectly for a tasty and satisfying, yet light, option. We had to try dessert right? The meyer lemon ice cream with toasted angel food was out of this world, perfectly tart. The chocolate pudding tart was also amazing, served warm with pumpkin ice cream a dash of salt and caramel. A perfect ending to a perfect brunch. Our tab with coffee, entree, and dessert (including tip) came to about $40/person. A must try for brunch and I can't wait to sample their dinner (and their great outdoor dining space in spring/summer!)

Food was good and the environment was excellent. The portion sizes were small and thus the prices were outrageous. The wait staff kept coming over and asking us how was the food. It was like they were programmed to keep interrupting us. We found it very upsetting. We will think twice before we return. Probably not.

I was looking for a cute outdoor restaurant to eat at with a friend. Being that I was just visiting from CA, I just had to yelp and found this place!!! The pictures don't do justice. It's truly an amazing experience eating at Talula Garden. Very cute ambiance with the lighting and setup! A+ in my book. We went with getting a few appetizers and a main dish to share and it was more than enough. I got pretty full. They're known for their cheeses so I'd recommend trying their cheese. Some of the appetizers we got were the lamb belly, tuna, and crab salad. For the main dish; we went with the chicken and I liked it alot. For wine: I went with a white. I wanted something similar to a riesling and they had a blanc that was from India which was super tasty! Go for it. If you're not interested in coming here for dinner; you are just out of your mind. Even stop by for drinks at the bar. I'd say this place is a total date spot!!

Definitely a date pleaser. The outdoor garden space is beautiful. I love the trees, ivy, faucet wall... they all contribute to a "out of Philadelphia" experience. Too bad it is getting cold now. I passed through the indoor space, and it was nice as well, but not like the patio. We actually had a good sampling of many dishes. We tried: Colorado Lamb Belly, Shortbreads, Spiced Butternut Squash Ravioli, Muscovy Duck Breast, side of Mushrooms Galore, and a few more that I cannot remember (bad sign)... I think they were seasonal. Nothing that blew my socks off, but everything was very, very good. We hinted that the meal took really long (it was a packed night), and we didn't have time for dessert. Our server told the manager, and we got their Trio of Handmade Ice Creams for free! A thoughtful touch. The food was delicious, but definitely more of a fan of the space and ambience.

Talula's Garden is more than just a restaurant, it is an experience. Be sure to leave plenty of time to relax and enjoy every minute of what Talula's has to offer. The entire staff is warm and friendly and amazingly knowledgable. Upscale dining but not the least bit pretentious. The only problem is I can't get back soon enough!

An update. I've since been back to Talula's a few times, for brunch and dinner. While I continue to have good meals, I have to downgrade to 4 stars, mainly because of prices. There are so many excellent dining options in this neighborhood, and the vast majority have larger portions for lower prices. Moreover, many of these other excellent restaurants are BYOB. So when I see a bottle of wine I paid $50 for, selling at $11 in a store 2 blocks away, it reinforces my more considered opinion that Talula's is over-priced.

Really nice place. Met some friends here before a party nearby. The bar was full but they were able to seat us at a table in the bar area so we could get a cheese plate and some drinks/bread. Pretty unique. The server had a great knowledge of the cheeses and if we had ordered other items from the menu, I'm sure we would have been further impressed.

I like Talula's. The ideal situation for a Starr restaurant, an already successful small scale restauranteur with a strong theme for him to run wild on. The atmosphere is excellent. High ceiling high class farmhouse, modern lines and surrealistic farm paintings married with rustic colors and mismatched silverware. It's difficult to decide on a meal here, everything sounds amazing. Server was very knowledgeable, with specific reasons why he preferred certain dishes. Beer list is large enough, with good selections all around. Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout is good stuff. Don't even get me started on Founders Centennial I.P.A. If it wasn't in my fridge at home it would have been in my glass here. We haven't been able to tear ourselves away from the In Kind cheese plate. Despite the enticing descriptions of the others, it's too delicious and a good size for two people. On our last visit I had the Braised Veal with Rosemary Pappardelle, Kale, and Mushrooms. It has a savory flavor that while good, maybe doesn't pop like you'd expect from the description. However, it's a very appropriate dish for the theme of the restaurant, with the tougher veal sections braised to soften them. Wife had the Lobster & Crab Beet salad, and it's quite good. Wife liked her Sea Whistle Salmon with Roasted Sunchokes and Fuyu Persimmon Chutney. Maybe not the best she's had, but good. My roasted Leg of Lamb with Honey Glazed Squash, Braised Kale, and Niçoise Olive Vinaigrette was probably better. Cooked perfectly, it was tender and well balanced with the melding of flavors from the other ingredients. Braised Leek and Leafy Greens Gratinee side is excellent. Overall I'm a little lost about this place. Some of the Starr issues manage to dog it a bit. The total experience is less than the sum of its impressive parts. There are amazing aspects to this restaurant, but the flavors are very restrained, almost too subtle at times. No single dish blows me away. I think the pricing is reasonable given the atmosphere and liquor license though.

Great atmosphere, great food and great service! The cheese is to die for. Tried the Cremont for the first time and it was one of, if not the best cheese I have ever had. Drinks were pricey, but very tastey homemade sangria. Not too expensive.

Just went for the first time. Wow. This was absolutely one of the best meals I've had in Philly, period. Everything was so well balanced, showcasing local vegetables even in dishes that had strong main components (for example, the pea puree in my striped bass dish was just as good as the fish itself, which was excellent). Everything blended together so well, the service was smooth, and the atmosphere is comfortable. Our dishes: The Butcher cocktail - a SPICY bloody mary. Really good, but you better like spice Foraged salad - great combo of fresh greens, veggies, apples, and an awesome dressing Curry Tuna - the tuna was incredible. Very subtle amount of curry flavor, mostly just got the delicious tuna flavor. The green and potatoes accompanying it were fine. Striped Bass - Seared with a crispy skin and served on super fluffy mashed potatoes with pea puree and full peas. So good, the only complaint was that the fish was JUST barely overcooked. I would order this agian and again. Lamb Shoulder - would also order this again and again. Just a pot of pulled lamb, jous, and polenta mixed together. Amazing Gnochetti - really fresh tasting homemade pasta and vegetables. Didn't like the fern (too oily) Creamed Kale - Pretty standard but great Beets and Ricotta - really amazing, the ricotta went with the beet flavor so well. Donuts - Really soft, fluffy donuts, can't go wrong Chocolate Parade - 4 different chocolate dessert, a torte, a hazelnut bar, a pudding, and a salted chocolate caramel cookie. All of them were great, with the salted caramel bar the best We didn't even hit up the huge cheese menu or anythign else, but I would go back and try everything in a heartbeat.

I came here last month for my birthday and I have to say that Talula's is probably my new favorite restaurant in Philly. The decor is beautiful, but I wouldn't expect anything less from a Starr restaurant. The service was also on point, and they went out of their way to make my birthday meal perfect. The only downside was that the tables were so close together it was hard to have a conversation without eavesdropping. I imagine it's better during the week, so unless you are ok with a less-than-intimate meal, I'd skip here on the weekends.
I've been to Talula's twice now and the food gets better each time. My first mistake was not getting a cheese plate when I was at Talula's in July. Get a cheese plate. Wait, let me be clear: Get a cheese plate. If you're like me and don't know much about cheese except that you really like it, The Master Collection is a safe bet (and seems like it's probably the best deal for your money - 8 different cheeses!). I went with 3 (2 pseudo (they eat fish) and 1 actual) vegetarians so we ordered mostly veggie dishes. My cousin and I split the seared scallops. The caramelized cauliflower was absolutely delicious and went perfectly with the scallops. We also shared two vegetable sides, the mushrooms and beets. Beets aren't something you normally see on a menu so we got them. Sort of sweet, sort of weird. Not sure what I thought of them but both my cousin and aunt loved them. I probably wouldn't order them again. The mushrooms were perfect. For dessert we ordered and split the Dark Chocolate Cremeaux which was a perfect way to end a great meal. Next time I visit, regardless of season, I'm sitting outside. It's beautiful.

The best meal I've had in a while.... The bluefish was beyond my expectations! The cheese plate was perfect. The waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. 2 downsides: being sat by the bar despite making reservations, bar patrons were literally standing beside us (a few small inches away as we ate), and the dessert- A cookie plate was meh...

I was here the other night for another fabulous dinner. I had the crab salad, tried a cheese plate, fluke sashimi, and as a main course had the scallops. We finished with the ricotta donuts as dessert. Food is great, and our server was also very knowledgeable and attentive to detail. I will definitely go back. However, I find myself posting today, and giving the restaurant four stars because of the hostess. She came over to our table a couple of times staring at me and our group to determine when we were going to be finished our entrees. She continued to pace around the table, and when I finally looked up and caught her staring at me again, it was then that she asked, "How is everything?". I thought that after our pre-dinner cocktails, three bottles of wine, multiple appetizers, salads, main courses and dessert, I wouldn't feel as if we were being pushed out of the restaurant. I just hope that customer service is addressed by management so this does not happen again.

Had brunch with 5 friends and it was delicious! I took the waiter's advice and ordered the shrimp and grits- deconstructed and so flavorful. Do yourself a favor and order the grits if you're looking for savory; if you're looking for sweet, the sour cream pancakes with blueberries & maple fluff are super light and yummy. I ordered the bloody mary which was good but my friend found too spicy. For dessert, the butterscotch pudding is a revelation, or actually, the warm salty caramel on top. So damn good!

If you want to go for a romantic night out with your partner, this is by far my favourite place to be! You are literally eating in at contemporary garden with the sound of water flowing in the background and twinkling lights hung all oved the walls and trees. While you're waiting to be seated, go to the bar to order one of their spring cocktails. We ordered a jug of white sangria for two - it was really well made, not too sweet or too fruity. We've also ordered steak and duck. The portion of the food is pretty small and it tastes okay nothing special or outstanding. However I will come back hands down - it's a great place to relax from Phillys concrete jungle and busy streets!

The food was wonderfully creative and beautiful. The tastes were delicious and interesting: micro-brewed ginger ale, bright green stinging nettle puree, pickled red onion, blood orange sorbet, perfectly cooked and seasoned fish and meats, and perfect desserts. The waiter was friendly, smart, and the perfect guide for the menu. You could tell he loved the food and loved working there. He really took a great meal and made it a fantastic meal. The supporting staff was also friendly and great in the personality department. The lighting is low and warm. Wonderful I say. We had an incredible time and highly recommend the place.

Talula's Garden is incredible. The staff from the kitchen to the front of the house is superb. The managers did their best to accommodate every request of all patrons. It was quite remarkable. Now onto the food! The food is great. A huge focus on locally farmed/raised sustainable products from meat to vegetables and everything in between is a fantastic concept. Basic ingredients combined together to create memorable dishes. Be sure to ask your server for recommendations, they will direct you to the best dishes available.

My wife and I had dinner here. We started with the World Travel cheese plate which was excellent. However, the dishes went downhill from there. As a previous reviewer said, the entrees were bland. I had the lamb confit and it was in a thick heavy polenta with no depth of flavor. My wife's corn soup was very good with a unique flavor that kept you coming back for another spoonful. Her entree, the cod, was, in contrast, just ok and boring compared to the soup. Overall, this experience didn't live up to the hype for us.

An epic Saturday night disaster. Giving Talula's 2 stars instead of zero because after the fiasco, management did everything they could to make it up to us. Had a 9:15 reservation for 2 people -- our anniversary celebration. Were told they were running 15 minutes behind. No problem. At 9:45, after no communication, we inquired again. Then were advised we had 1 group in front of us. The hostess was neither apologetic nor kind about the situation. A manager intervened very shortly thereafter, apologized profusely and offered a free cheese plate. We were finally seated at 10 p.m., in the bar area. Not what we had in mind for our anniversary. If we had wanted to eat at a bar, we would have gone to Pub and Kitchen or GoodDog. Given the late hour, we took the table. Our knowledgeable waiter took drink orders, delivered beverages and then disappeared. We had to ask someone else to seek him out. There may have been confusion about our order because of the complimentary cheese plate on our table. We ordered at 10:40 p.m. The cheese plate selected by the manager was fantastic, special and arguably the best dish of the evening. We had the salad of raw tuna, which was fabulous, and the oxtail tortelloni. The broth for the tortelloni was overly salted, to the point of being nearly inedible. For main courses, we had the bluefish (very good) and the cod. The cod, like the tortelloni, was extremely salty. The main course arrived at 11:30. At that point, it was way too late to argue about it or substitute another dish. When our waiter inquired about the uneaten cod, we explained the issue. To the restaurant's credit, at the end of our meal, the manager came by and told us our dinner was on the house and would not let us pay for any of it. She encouraged us to come back another time and suggested trying on a less busy night. We genuinely appreciated that management took responsibility for what appears to be an unusual crater in Talula's food and service. With that said, it was a truly disappointing evening. I much prefer to write more positive reviews.

One of my new fave spots for brunch! A bit of background is necessary before delving into the dining experience. I had to call on a few occasions to increase the reservation as people were flying in from various parts of the country and it was somewhat of an impromptu gathering. Each time that I called and inquired about increasing the size of our party, Dan was incredibly accomodating. He was patient and very understanding that some people may or may not make the reservation on time. Upon arrival, our table was ready and waiting. Our server was very kind and made suggestions for those who had dietary restrictions. We began with two cheese plates and if you think I can remember what they were, you're silly. Sheep's Milk, Utah, Fig-infused, rural PA, and honey la la la are the buzz words I recall. The menu made it very difficult to choose an entree, so we all ordered something a bit different and shared tastes. The crab benedict, duck confit, market brunch and omelet were wonderful! And for those of you who subscribe to brunch laced with alcohol specialties, the cocktails are quite nice. I'll be back. Regularly. If you see me there, say hello.

This place has some of the best outdoor seating in the city. I especially love going here in spring and early fall, and sitting outdoors. Service has been impeccable each time I've been here. The cheese plates are amazing, and sometimes the highlight of the entire meal. They used to have this delicious farro risotto with ramps, and other sorts of seasonal veggies. I keep hoping, wishing, praying, they'll add it back to the summer/fall menu - but as of yet, it hasn't happened. The other entree's I've tried have been ok to good. Even though the food here isn't necessarily my favorite, the great service, cheese plates, and option to sit in a relaxing outdoor garden, draws me here regularly.

I went to Talulas Garden for a family dinner, and I was really impressed. The Daytripper cocktail was fruity and interesting, and while the portions were small-ish, the food did not fail to delight. I highly recommend the calamari appetizer and the duck entree - both delicious. As for sweets, I sampled both the doughnuts and the cobbler, and both were divine. Would love to go back soon, when my budget allows!

A great meal and Jenny the general manager / sommelier made this a 5 star night. You have to get over the fact that if you do the tasting and wine pairing, we're talking a $400 bill in a not so intimate / romantic setting so that brought it down a star. The various fish dishes with fun sauces, such as utilizing nettles was delicious, my favorite being the the grilled scallop, but the ribeye was a perfect medium rare as well. The deserts were very good, but they did not steal the show.

Upon arriving for our reservation (on time), we were asked by a VERY rude/pretentious hostess to wait in the bar area, where we proceeded to wait for almost 20 mins. Despite this initial misstep, the food, atmosphere, and our lovely waiter eventually won me over. Very friendly service and helpful in selecting dishes. I had the duck with cherries, which was great. The real star of the meal though was the cheese plate we ordered. We elected to create our own, with some help from our waiter, and everything was delicious. I would go back just to drink wine and eat cheese. A little on the pricey side, but overall a great experience.

Talula's has the most beautiful, magically transformed outdoor space you will find in Philadelphia...or any city, for that matter. There are strings of lights lining the dark stone walls that just sparkle and shine, the iron gate you walk through gives you that "secret garden" feeling. This place is a 5 for ambiance alone. We sat inside which had a cozy, homey, yet separtist feel. There were 4 of us and we made a point not to double up on anything for fear of missing something outstanding. Appetizers were gnocchi, tomato and crab salad, celery root soup and quail egg toast. The gnocchi were simply delicious, the crab salad was my fave being very refreshing and zesty, the celery root soup was excellent, but just a few spoonfuls will do seeing how it's quite filling. I don't "do" quail eggs, so I skipped this one, but it was all the rage at our table. For dinner we had the beef/rib dish, the chicken and buckwheat crepes, the eggplant angliotti, and the lobster pie. We agreed that our apps were the best part of the meal, but that doesn't mean the dinners disappointed. The chicken (believe it or not) was our favorite, my beef was delicious, I wouldn't order it again, but I'm not disappointed that I did. The eggplant and lobster pie were lost on me, I think I was enjoying mine too much to pay attention. Their specialty cocktails were super delicious and our service was impeccible, each server was very knowledgable, helpful and light on their feet not interrupting or implementing poor timing. I would host any event here for it's impressive decor and I would bring all family and friends here to taste what real organic and sustainable food is all about. VERY well done.

I ate here last night for Valentine's Day with the boo. We walked out smiling. We ordered from the regular menu vs. the $100 per person Valentine's Day menu. You get 2 mini brioche buns with onion butter...pretty good, nothing outstanding, but nice. We started with the Master Cheese Platter which was served with house made bread (a raisin one, and a plain french bread, plus some flat crispy jawns) and small portions of honey, cranberry puree, walnuts, and apples. The cheese was delish - and only 1 blue, hurrah! Blue is not my fave. We skipped "Beginnings" because we wanted dessert and went straight to Mains. I got the seared scallops served with cauliflower, pine nuts, and some cream drag of a spoon on the bottom of the plate. Not too heavy or light, it was the perfect platter to satisfy my hunger without making me feel like I needed more food. The boo ordered the leg of lamb served with roasted butternut sqash and kale. I love places like this that are veggie heavy...he would NEVER eat this stuff unless it was served to him at a highly rated restaurant. And he's eating kale, KALE! The lamb was cooked very well - wasn't actually a LEG chillin on the plate, it looked like a sliced skirt steak. But it's a nice change since we haven't tried anything other than a lamb chop/lollipop. Dessert rounded out the entire meal. We split the steamed date pudding served with goat cheese ice cream. Goat cheese ice cream...why isn't this sold by the pint? It tasted great on it's own with the lovable tang of the goat cheese hitting behind each spoonful, but on top of the pudding...O.co. The pudding was like dates and cake all mushed up and soaked in syrup....it was like you were spooning complex brown sugar into your face covered in ice cream. We left feeling full but not overly full. And the only reason I took a star away is because we got kind of a crap seat given that the reservation was made over a month in advance, and the server sort of kept our GC that had extra bones on it. But NBD, the place was super good.

On my second trip, they rolled out the red carpet - apparently writing bad reviews on here and on OpenTable makes you well know.... We actually received a call from Amy Olesky to apologize for the bad experience, and she sent us a gift certificate to cover the majority of the cost of the first meal. Needless to say, we were much more impressed with the food, spent more than we did the first time, and I am now a fan. I don't necessarily think it's the best place in Philadelphia, but it is good. Word of caution - watch out for Josh. We saw him when we were there, and were a little shocked. According to Amy, they had already had a few complaints about him and she was going to deal with it. Not sure what happened, but he was definitely still waiting tables.

Was it adorable? Yes. Did we have a good time? Yes. Was it worth it? Nope. The final bill was in the neighborhood of $250+tip for 4 entrees, an app, a dessert, a bottle of wine, and 4 drinks. I'm not telling you anything new when I say that the portions were small. After reading about the tempura squash blossoms, we ordered them for the table. They were good but nothing extraordinary. It was mostly a big glob of goat cheese inside a fried something. I had seen July's menu and knew that there was only one vegetarian option - some mushroom-y gnocci which sounded delicious. It was August but the menu hadn't been posted online so I didn't know what I could expect. Like July's menu, there was one veg option and it was an eggplant something or other and I'm just not fond of eggplant. I felt bad but I asked if there was any way the chef could whip up something else for me. Our very polite server asked what I liked - pasta, mushrooms, goat cheese, beets... She went back to the kitchen, returned, and told me that it wouldn't be a problem at all. Fantastic! Then our orders arrived: 2 scallop dishes, one lobster, and mine: plain pasta with succotash. Lima beans, corn, some tomatoes, and a handful of croutons over some fusilli. It was bland and uninventive and small and so, so, SO disappointing. Had I known the chef wouldn't have been able to accommodate me, I would have ordered the damn eggplant. I'm not crazy about eggplant at all but I would at least feel that I was getting what the chef could handle. Vegetarians know this: expect one entree on the menu and hope you like it. I didn't even look to see what I was charged for my meal. I didn't want to know. Over $60 a person was sufficient information.

I went here for my birthday. It was good and pricey (fortunately I wasn't paying). Can't really give less than 4 stars for a restaurant in this category, but I just wasn't wowed the way I expected to be by a Starr restaurant with $$$$ prices. The food is all locally sourced and sustainable, to the point that their wine list points out the eco-friendliness of each wine. The "master collection" cheese plate was tasty, though so is walking into Di Bruno Bros on Saturday and tasting just as much cheese for free (instead of $18). I had the leg of lamb ($27) for dinner, which was very succulent and flavorful. I had a taste of the seared tuna, which was also pretty good. I would recommend the trio of cupcakes for desert, though my favorite was the tropical sorbet that comes with the raspberry mousse. Bottom line - I would gladly come here if someone else is paying, but don't think its worth the money otherwise.

I am shocked to see this is only a 4 star rating overall on yelp. This was the best meal I had during a week's visit to Philly on business. Great flavors, fresh, unique foods and served in reasonable sized portions so that you can enjoy every single course. The scallops with bacon and potatoes was an like an explosion of goodness in my mouth with each bite, and who knew that you could make ice cream with a smoke flavor to mimic a smore? On top of the amazing food, the service was fantastic and attentive (without being overbearing) and the atmosphere was quaint and unique - very warm and makes you feel as if you're in someone's home. Make reservations - and GO! If it's a nice evening you may sit outside. Those who gave this restaurant a rating of less than 4 are out of their minds. I'd have to assume that their taste in food lies more with simplistic, mass quantity fare.

I'd like to give 4.5 stars for food and service, but I'm going to round down because of our table location. The cheese plate was really fun. We did the Master's Collection, which offered a great variety of cheese. The honey and fig jam that came with it was really delicious as well. For dinner, I got the chicken dish and my boyfriend got the snapper. He said it was the best snapper he has ever had, and I will say the chicken dish was really juicy and had a great combination of flavors. We shared the pudding tart with caramel ice cream for dessert, which was a nice mix of sweet and salty. As for the negative, we were seated along the window of the bar area (even though we had made reservations weeks in advance and were seated when the restaurant was fairly empty). It was freezing over there! The walls have big grates in them that blow out cold air. They should definitely try to fix that. Avoid those tables if you can. Overall, a great night out in Philadelphia. I'm sure the garden is really beautiful in the summer.

I haven't shelled out that 5th star in a while. It's as if that 5th star is a vowel I have to buy on Wheel of Fortune. Let me also add that Talula's was my second dinner of the night, after a whole day of eating. My brother comes to town, I took the day off of work, we ate Philadelphia. This was our last stop of the night, for a 10:00pm dinner. I think if we came here on an empty (or emptier) stomach, I might have proposed to Talula. Anyhow, we had the halibut artichoke dish, lamb in the clay pot thing with polenta (I can't really recall the official title), and a mushroom pate of sorts. Everything was just so well done and balanced, I don't really have a better way of putting it. Just all the ingredients made sense. I had a hard time picking from the menu because even reading the ingredients, I thought it was brilliant. The garden area is very cute, and the service was impeccable. Small talk, large talk, they covered it all. A waitress who wasn't even our waitress sold the ginger ale like she owned stock in it. I would've bought tap water from her by that point. Talula, I'll see you at the Table in 2012.

We really enjoyed our meal here . . . did we enjoy it enough to spend 200.00 on the regular out at dinner, probably not, but will definitely return when someone else . . . most likely my parents, is footing the bill. The space is fantastic. I want to hold thousands of parties in the outdoor space. It is just beautiful - go just for drinks and take in the atmosophere. We started with the squash blossoms - which I did not love, a little too "tempura-y" for my taste. We then ordered the 8-cheese plate. It was a great selection, and we loved the crackers that the cheese was served with. Sometimes bread can be too overwhelming for a cheese pairing - the thin flatbread was just right. I ordered the lobster and pork belly - both were very good. My fiance got the scallops - they were fantastic! I will definitely be returning . . . most likely just for drinks, cheese and the atmosphere, which were the best parts of the meal anyway, and only a fraction of the cost.

Sounding more like a girls night out or the next title following Pride and Prejudice on a Lifetime movie marathon, I was a little skeptical in the cab ride over. I've always been a burger and fries kinda guy and the thought of enjoying a redux carrot slice with coin sized portion of grass fed anything seems to make me cranky. Alas, I checked all expectations at the door and decided to give it a whirl. Service was competent and knowledgable almost to the point of being hilarious because everything seemed to be "approachable" and deserving of a "nice finish" After a few glasses of wine I started making these words my own until I got kicked under the table. Oh well, on to the food which did not disapoint by any means. We started with an array of cheeses which were fantastic and again....very approachable. Then a fantastic preparation of Veal and pappardelle ensued bringing a nice big "I told you so" to my initial skepticism. For my main it was...You guessed it...grass fed beef with a delicious combination of banyuls (who knows) and brown butter was extremely delicious. Overall the meal, service and the chance to sit outside one last time this season turned out to be an great experience.

The food was exceptional. Portions are on the smaller side, but it is definitely a case of quality over quantity. The garden and the different interior areas are very different from each other, but all very nice and enjoyable.

This is truly a wonderful restaurant. It is in a great location in Philadelphia,, the food is fresh, there is a wonderful drink selection, excellent service, and a diverse menu. You will get a high-quality meal here, and will not be disappointed! It is not cheap, but for a special occasion, it is definitely worth it.
talula is like catherine zeta-jones--sexy and refined, with just a little bit of crazy underneath. i eagerly awaited the arrival of talula's garden, as i had never been to the original, and i was very curious to see what a pairing of starr and olexy would bring. right from the moment you walk in, you see the juxtaposition. non-matching outdoor seating, comfortable small tables, a buffet/console table among the tables, pretty country-esque pictures... this is flanked by ridiculous 20 feet ceilings, a bar area that transmits sounds and voices like you're at your local watering hole. hence, the touch of crazy underneath... are you a upscale farmhouse, or happy hour meet-n-greet? the server was super-knowledgeable, patient, and plain ol' sweet. we got the curds & whey cheese platter, the gnudi were little cloud pillows bathed in a shallot jus. and let's talk about the little happy brioche buns topped with a spring-colored ramp butter. my scallops were good, my friend's beef was on the tougher side. and... get sides. get cheeses. get a dessert. the portions are *tiny* for the price. but i guess, if you are a refined lady like czj, you wouldnt eat til the point of full, huh? classy, refined, right? we had a highly attentive staff who constantly asked us for feedback. i appreciate this, and i was more than honest with them. i love that they want to continually improve, and i can't wait to go back.

Loved this place. Sat outside with a group of 6 and the atmosphere was equal parts relaxing and invigorating. We shared a cheese plate, for which our waiter was very helpful in customizing something to meet the group's different tastes. The calamari appetizer was fantastic, especially the strips of pickled tomatoes. I ordered the bass, perfect portion size and great taste. I'm usually not a fish person, but I wanted a change of pace, and it was well worth it. As an added bonus, the bar inside had a selection of locally brewed beers which I really wanted to try while I was in Philly for business.

We were looking forward to exploring Talula's as we were enticed by their menu and "The Spot" photos on their website. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly hostesses. We made an 8:30 reservation to sit in the garden. However, we had to wait another 25 for our table to be ready. We found two seats at the bar and enjoyed a Gardener Mojito and Vodka and Tonic while we waited. The bartenders were very attentive and the drinks were perfectly prepared. We were escorted to our cozy table by an adorable hostess and immediately were approached by our outgoing waiter. The beautiful garden was refreshing with herbs, lanterns, flowers and fun, yet tasteful music. We shared the "In Kind" cheese plate. MMM...a perfect way to start our dinner. our favorites of the four were the Cypress Grove Creamery Truffle Tremor and the Gouda from Holland. We also shared the tortelloni beginning and it melted in our mouths. For our main course, we enjoyed the Scallops and Halibut which were perfectly blended with flavors that made both of us close our eyes to truly enjoy their fullness. Both were cooked to the perfect tenderness. We shared the swiss chard which was excellent. Our deserts were satisfactory. Blueberry Gateaux and Raspberry Almond Crumble. Flavors peaked our taste buds, but the crumble was on the dry side. Now to the presentations. The cheese plate was lovely presented. The server explained each cheese in a friendly manner. However, all of the other courses were not presented at all, except for the dessert...which was rushed and not very well explained. Our dinner was well worth the money and I would definitely return. I would like for the staff to improve their presentations...it makes the experience more enjoyable. The food was amazing. The service was friendly and attentive. The environment was beautiful and inviting.

talula's garden provided the perfect romantic, cozy backdrop for an anniversary celebration. that said - and maybe this is because i'm no expert in organic, locally grown fare - i felt most of the food left something to be desired. save for the amazing cheese plate we started our meal with, we both felt the food was inconsistent. some bites were incredible, others "funny" tasting. here's an example: my bf ordered the bluefish as his main course, and was enjoying it thoroughly when he suddenly got a startled look on his face. "i just ate a whole, peeled lemon," he exclaimed. he spent the rest of his meal trying to avoid any remaining lemons that might've been hiding in his dish. another example: i ordered the green salad with goat cheese and nuts for my starter. the first few bites i took - well - weren't great. i might describe them as "earthy." i powered through, thinking this is what they mean by "locally grown." i'm glad i powered through, because by the end of the salad i was literally licking the plate. but here's the thing, talula, for the price and the hype - shouldn't i have been licking my plate the whole way through?

'Seasonally inspired urban American food' in Stephen Starr's garden-to-table joint venture with Aimee Olexy of Talula's Table, the legendary Kennett Square 12-seater that requires at least a year's notice to snag a reservation. Talula's Garden makes the 'Table' available to the masses in Philly, albeit still at inflated prices for conservative portions. The food was good, but overrated based on all the buzz I had heard in advance about this place. The premium you pay is for the ambiance: Talula's Garden is a delight for the eyes. Lest you forget the farm-to-table concept, the interior features reclaimed wooden planks for its walls and tables, an entire wall for a 'vertical garden' of fresh herbs, and an Alice Waters quote printed in large script. There's also a gorgeous decorated patio garden for outdoor seating, which is definitely going to be hoppin' this summer. As for the food: - Entrees: the Caramelized Sea Scallops (with spring puree, pine nut milk, and watercress) and Lacquered Chicken Breast (crusted in hazelnut) were both nicely cooked, but nothing special - and the chicken in particular was a much smaller dish than expected - Desserts: In the Sweet Doughnuts, the donuts were beignet-style and fine, but the star was definitely the fresh strawberry sauce. I was a fan of the Rhubarb Gateau (on olive oil shortbread, served with rhubarb sherbet). Having had a meal at Alice Waters' Chez Panisse as a frame of reference, I wasn't blown away by Talula's Garden. But food was still solid, service was smooth and pleasant, and I'm all about the concept. I also can't get enough of that brioche with ramp butter they give you...

I went to Talula's for dinner and they have earned every star. Or should I say Starr earned every star?! We sat in the garden and let me just say- the smartest move they made first and foremost was getting rid of the frosted glass and creating a chic, outdoor garden-style patio to dine in. It's nestled between two tall buildings, decorated with a faucet fountain attached to one side and an entrance in to the main restaurant (there is indoor seating as well) on the other side. The service was genuine, quick to please, and spot-on (I suppose they're reading these reviews because everyone around me seemed to be having a great time, too). Everything we ordered was perfection. We shared the soft shell crab beginner and it came with delicious shaved fennel. Our entrees included the Caramelized Maine Sea Scallops, Kohlrabi Puree, Pine Nut Milk, Lemon, Lovage, and Watercress, the Grass-Fed Pennsylvania Beef and Braised Rib, Banyuls and Brown Butter, and Turnip, and the Marinated Halibut, Oxtail Stuffed Artichoke Barigoule (YUM!), Sea Beans, and Saffron - each of us were in heaven! We also indulged in ALL of the veggie sides Baby Beets, Almonds, and Herbs from the Garden; Swiss Chard and Stinging Nettle Gratinee (YUM!!); and Roasted Radishes, Anchovy, and Butter (we devoured these!). and they were all so yummy! You really get everything you pay for here. If you can believe it, two of us still had room for dessert- the Spring Cookie Collection looked good from a distance, but I only had eyes for the Dark Chocolate Cremeaux, sprinkled with bacon and chocolate crumble and I think a hint of caramel sauce. Sweet Jesus! There were also toasted mini-marshmallows with a little sea salt on them, as if they were reading my mind.... We also shared delicious french press for the table- so good! Special Note: The bar in the back of the garden is self-seat starting at 7 PM!

I've had drinks at the bar a couple times, so I was intrigued enough to check out Talula's Garden. I was not expecting anything cheap, especially given the pricey bar menu. But the location and space are beautiful, so I figured this would be a special occasion place anyway. Nothing prepared me, however, for the ridiculous price points. Appetizers start at $12 and entrees at $26? That is bananas! The food was tasty but not mind-blowing. I'd recommend the cheese plate, especially if it's being custom-designed by the cheesemonger. The squash blossoms were also quite tasty, and the tortelloni were absolutely delicious. Who knew that goat would be so tender and tasty? Too bad, it only came with three pieces...for $14, you'd think it would come with more meat. For the entree, I ordered the bass, which was good but nothing that (Little)Fish couldn't serve up better and cheaper. Service was inconsistent. As the place filled up, our table was increasingly glossed over. I didn't even order dessert, but my dining companions waited forever for cookies (which didn't look like any cookie I'm used to seeing). At one point, water was nowhere in sight until the manager had to take things into his own hands and refill our glasses himself. While that was very thoughtful of him, I couldn't help but wonder "Why is the water guy ignoring us?" All in all, very expensive. Stick to the bar. It's expensive, too, but at least it won't set you back a healthy three-figures.

The service and attention to detail is phenominal. Not to mention the food is fresh and excellent. They really do a good job of reinventing their menu on a seasonal basis. Probably the best duck breast I've ever had. Try the side of mushrooms. Stephen Star doesn't disappoint!

Not only is this restaurant beautiful inside and out but the meal was fantastic and the staff including the host staff and management were amazing! We came with a 1 1/2 year old and this isn't really a restaurant for kiddos but they were really accommodating and found great things for her to snack on. The cheese plate and description when served was a great addition. Can't wait to come back in the spring and summer and sit outside!

I am giving this 5 stars because the overall experience was terrific. From the food to the service. I sat at the bar because there were no reservations available but I was able to eat at the bar and honestly it was a great experience. Food was great from the sweet breads appetizer to the farro risotto. There were so many items on the seasonal fresh menu I found it hard to choose. The atmosphere is great both indoors and out of doors. The garden is peaceful and the indoors with it's high ceilings is both sophisticated and comfortable. Unfortunately I don't live in Philadelphia so I won't be able to go for each season but this is a place not to miss if you live in town or are just passing through!!!!!

In summary - the atmosphere was lovely, the food was very good, the service was, as I now understand the service of the Starr restaurants (or Starr-backed restaurants in this case?) to be, over-the-top. In detail - and this is all petty stuff really..... As a former bank the space is grand or has grand dimensions (lofty ceilings, large door frames, metal architectural detailing), which I found to be at odds with the down-home, uber-casual, farm-fresh vibe this place is going for. The outdoor space would have been a preferable experience but I didn't request this on my online reservation so was out of the question. The food was very good and I found the serving sizes adequate. Of our order, my favorite was the Gnocchi entree and radish side. They were really yummy. The cocktails were tasty but too small, which leads me to the service... We had like five different servers, which I now understand is part of the Starr service, but I find the inconsistency annoying. There's always some new young face popping up at the table and his places are teeming with underused staff. And, our waitress cleared our $12 cocktails before we were done.

Just to get it out of the way: One thing I cannot abide is being asked if I have a reservation if there are 50 empty tables in the restaurant. That aside, Talulas Garden is a wonderful hidden gem in Philadelphia. The outside seating area is very picturesque with shabby chic style tables and chairs, as well as the unique faucet fountain on the wall. Some of the chairs recline and are a bit too low for the tables, and are therefore uncomfortable to eat in. Every person I saw sit in one asked to swap with another table. Service was friendly and on point, and the clearing of dishes and bringing of new silverware was well timed. Our waitress (Heather) was very patient and knowledgeable about the menu, answering our questions and giving helpful recommendations. The offerings on the menu were seasonal, local, and the wine list was Eco-friendly. I was impressed by the unique array of food and flavor combinations offered by executive chef Michael santoro. To start, we got the mushroom pate en croute. I was more impressed with the deboned chicken wing with delicate quail egg than the pate, which seemed cold and lifeless next to the warm chicken wing. An odd pairing, but tasted alright. I could have eaten a plate of the chicken wings and been happier for it. They also brought complimentary brioches with ramp butter and fleur de sel. Delicious. "the artist" cocktail of bubbly and grapefruit juice was delightfully springlike and topped with an edible violet. For dinner, my husband got the halibut with sea beans and beef stuffed artichoke barigoule, while i got the grass fed pennsylvania beef and braised rib with turnips. He said the halibut was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed the beef and rib which were both cooked to perfection. I could have licked the plate. For dessert, he got the rhubarb gateau and I got the cookie sampler. The rhubarb gateau came with rhubarb sorbet which was too strong and bitter on it's own, but the gateau was delicious. The cookie sampler was comprised of a carrot cake sandwich cookie, a vanilla crescent, an almond cookie, and a chocolate caramel shortbread with sea salt; all of which were divine. Next time we will be sure to sample some of the many cheese offerings. All in all a great meal, with a somewhat expensive but deserving price tag. We had a great time, enjoying the spring weather and calm ambiance , despite the unfortunate chairs. Every passerby stopped to ogle the place, so kudos on the design of the outdoor space.

Perfectly executed! I went here for my birthday and all my expectations were met. There is a beautiful patio area that is actually NOT on the sidewalk, but in a little garden area. It annoys me to no end when a restaurant's "outside seating area" is on the sidewalk so that diners have the pleasure of eating with cars, fumes, and random pedestrians. No, thank you! Inside, the decor retains the garden element which reminds of me a combination of Secret Garden/Alice in Wonderland/Anthropologie. The bar area is a perfect size for guests waiting for tables. The food and service were both excellent. I ordered the lobster tail and slow cooked pork. My friends ordered the grass fed beef + ribs and the duck. I tasted all the dishes and they were all excellent. This was not a meal you could re-create at home. We also ordered the squash blossoms, kid ravioli/totrellini, mushroom pate, and smoked sturgeon for apps and a cheese plate and the cookie sampler for dessert. Everything exceeded expectations. Everything we ordered was inventive, beautifully plated, and most importantly delicious. Our waitress was attentive and extremely helpful. Her 2 wine suggestions were perfect complements to our meal. I look forward to another visit here soon!

Fantastic, fresh food in a beautifully upscale, yet unpretentious setting. I started with the Locavore cheese platter - a lot for one person, but I wanted to try the famed starter and was able to take the leftovers back home. I also sampled the Crab and Lobster appetizer, which was very fresh. My entree was the Roasted Lancaster Chicken, which was tender and flavorful.

Our new favorite in Philly! We just returned from Paris, and it reminded us of some our favorite culinary experiences in the City of Light. Fantastic cheese tastings, well stocked bar, affordable and complete wine list, great food and even better service, in a lovely ambience. We will be booking again for our next celebration!

Adorable! Only stopped in for drinks - planning to go for dinner soon.

The scallops are excellent ! but the reason why I'm giving them four stars is because we had to wait a while for the waiter to come by, we didn't get greeted or water or anything for about 10-15 mins. However once our waiter did come by, the service was good.

My partner and I went to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't be more delighted over the entire experience. I opted for their autumn salad for a starter and their Muscovy Duck Breast and Confit Duck Leg for a main course. I am not a big meat eater on a regular basis so this was definitely a treat! For dessert we had the Dark Chocolate Cremeaux which they added a candle on top of and wished us a happy anniversary which was absolutely charming. Service was quick and friendly and the hostess answered all our questions when we called ahead to make reservations. We will definitely be back to Talula's Garden!

GREAT atmosphere...service was good as well as the food! Didn't get a chance to sit in the garden but wow is it beautiful. A lil weird seeing the waiters/waitresses in jeans...but great spot. check it out,

(5)Heather B.
(4)Gwendolyn P.

This place was magical - beautiful atmosphere, fantastic food and service. Ugh, can I just live here??

A wonderful little spot to have a drink and catch up with old friends, woo a future mate or generally hang out with people you love. This is a happy place and it shows in the food, the drink and the hospitality.

Loved it. Greta food, service and ambience. A bit pricey, but all really good.

(5)Christy S.
Best place for outdoor dining in the city! Lovely cheese plates. Great specialty cocktails. A great place for a special occasion dinner or brunch with friends. I'm always disappointed when I go to Talula's and the weather doesn't allow for outdoor seating but the food never disappoints.
(5)Ron H.

My husband and I celebrated our 2nd anniversary here. the garden is extremely romantic. The staff is excellent. We highly recommend the cheese plate.

(2)Suzanne K.

(5)Susan W.
(5)K G.

Visited from Chicago and went with local friends. Wonderful atmosphere, creative and wide menu and knowledgeable service. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. miker

(4)Ariel D.

Went here the other night and enjoyed the tasting menu with friends. All of the courses were well done, but for the money, $100 per person, I expected a wow factor on each. This did not happen. The torchon of foie gras and the pork belly were stand out preparations. The foie gras cam with a purée of pistachio and a rhubarb glaze. The pork belly was perfectly done. Accompaniments were perfect. I was disappointed by the pappardelle even though I love ramps and the pan roasted halibut was overdone. The sides of potatoes and kale were served family style. The kale was so stringy that we could not cut it with our knives and forks to share it. We had similar cutting challenges with the spring onions in the first course which was also served family style and with butter knives. Talula's is known for their cheeses and the cheese plate did not disappoint. There was a small sampling of 5 different cheeses with a streak of honey, a fruit reduction, a Marcona almond, a glazed walnut, and some bread chips. The creme brûlée was excellent although the brûlée was an accompaning tuile. Service was good and attentive. I found parking at the meter just out front. There is an outside courtyard garden area for dining in good weather.

The setting, the Decour, the tables, the silverware, plates, the casualness and the warmth of Talula's garden was very inviting when I walked through the door. I came for the five course prefix meal not knowing what to expect but willing to experiment in someone else's dinner selection. Of the five courses, the carrot soup was outstanding and I could've had multiple bowls of that and been satisfied for the evening. The third course consisted of a scallop entrée which was also quite tasty. Now for my disappointments. The first course was a fancy chicken liver pate which was very benign. I believe I've tasted better pate from a corner deli. The fourth course was a cheeseboard which seemed to be in place to fill you up. I didn't understand why it was a fourth course and when asked, the waitstaff couldn't define the order of the food for the evening either. The final course was dessert which consisted of a bunch of chocolate type morsels however I am not a chocolate fan. No blame for either side with this course. Interesting food, somewhat. Inspiring- Not really! And now the real disappointment for the entire evening. Just prior to leaving I was having a conversation with the waitstaff. We were asked how our meal was which I replied, it was okay. And then the waitstaff proceeded to tell us that January's prefix meal was unbelievable and March's was going to be great too and we should come back to try it. She said February really wasn't that good compared to the others. So now I question Talula's Garden and wonder why they put out such a mediocre February prefix meal if the waitstaff doesn't complement it yet they want to pass it off to me as a wonderful monthly dining experience? If your own staff doesn't have rave reviews why would you put the selections on your menu? I felt taken for what should've been a wonderful dining experience. Shame on Talula's Garden!

Favorite place for us. The atmosphere is perfect, food is amazing and the service is impeccable. Try it for brunch!
(5)Alison K.

Wonderful food great service and of course absolutely beautiful work by Groundswell Design with the interior!
(5)Sarah T.
Great farm to table fare! I enjoyed the chicken under brick. The ambiance was very romantic with lighted gardens and muted lighting. The cocktails were very good. We will definitely be going back.

(5)Alison E.

I've always heard good things about this place and especially about Talula's Table in Kennett Square. We couldn't wait to try it out and then head on out to catch our musical. I'm writing this a bit late and on memory, so forgive me for not remembering everything we ordered. First impressions were already good with outdoor seating available for the warmer months and we were seated right away with reservations. There's a nice bar area in the back and different seating arrangements all throughout. Started out with butter brioche buns for the table and my god, I could eat a whole basket of these things! They came out warm, soft, buttery, and almost melts in your mouth. Local Brook Trout and Smokey Bacon, Crisp Brussels Sprouts, Parsnip Cream, Lemon, Cipollini Onion, and Bacon Vinaigrette Sautéed Escarole and Garlic Confit, Housemade Lamb Bacon, Charred Heirloom. I can't wait to come back when it's warmer and have a seat outside. If you're a big cheese person, they seem to have a lot of selections for that as well.

(4)Sarah P.

(5)Yasmin K.
Amazing atmosphere and fantastic food. I am vegetarian and got a cheese board with my table, as well as the potato gnocchi. Everything was just super flavorful. I heard likewise from my other guests. There were no dinner time reservations so we took a 9:30 reservation. Just a heads up!
(5)Kate M.

This place is beautiful. The courtyard is a dream. Cocktails and food are wonderful. If I was rich, I would go here a lot. Since I'm not, I will wait til someone else is buying.
(4)Jeremy M.
Fantastic food, great service, excellent cocktails, and perfect ambiance! If you prepare yourself for the price, you'll love the rest!
(5)Eric B.
Amazing food with delicately layered flavors subtle hint of fresh local herbs, a spectacular cheese menu with various cheese flights, the food will not disappoint. The tale service was outstanding! Our waitress was beyond words with her knowledge and description of the courses.
(4)Daniel N.
Amazing atmosphere, beautiful inside and out. Excellent waitstaff. Just didn't like the food that much. There are many other restaurants in the city in the price range with a far better menu.
(3)Jason W.
The food was amazing. The cheese and vegetable boards are perfect starters! It was the coziest and most unique dining experience we have had in philly.
(5)Tara T.
(5)Cathy F.

(5)Gregory D.
Hands down my favorite restaurant in Philadelphia, and possibly anywhere. The waitstaff is incredible, and the food is amazing and always changing. I have been back 3 times in one month!

(4)Suzanne S.
(2)Walter P.
(5)Joe L.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more casual romantic/dreamy/charming place to dine in Philly. Do Talula's right and make sure to get garden seating. It's worth any extra wait and while I can't back this up scientifically, I'm positive that it makes the food taste even better. So basically 85% of this menu speaks to me. "What does it say?" you ask. It says "EAT MEEEEEE!" I'll refrain from saying what the drink menu chock full of delicious herby, fresh fruity beverages says, as that should be fairly obvious. I was feeling fancy pants champagne status, so I ordered The Painter cocktail. It was a bit pricey for what was basically a lemonade mimosa, but delicious all the same. Ordered the "Not Your Granny's" cheese plate and was pleased. Pleased at its presentation and its deliciousness. Also ordered the calamari from the Beginning's section and the beets from the Little Vegetable Dishes. Both were scrumptious. Didn't get an entrée, because that felt like enough for me and my girlfriend, but will plan on being back at some point to make my way through that portion of the menu.

I have since been back to Talula's 3 more times - including last night. Each time was a true 5 star experience. But not last night. Service was still great. Food was not 5 star. (The cheese plate was still 5 star - best bites of the night including Délice de Bourgogne and a fantastic onion-y Abbott's Gold Cheddar. (Had that last time and swapped it into the "World Travel" cheese plate.) The cavatelli app was superb. But tiny. TINY! Yes, I know it's an app - but they presented it in a huge, deep "pasta" bowl and it made it look even smaller. Maybe serving it in a more propotionate vessel? My friend ordered the spring foraged salad which sounded heavenly on paper and in real life was just OK. The ramps were over powering and the foraged lettuces were a bit bitter and odd tasting. The beets and ricotta side still rocks my world. It was a strong 4 for food, 5 for service but... ...here's the BIG but... The cocktails have somehow gone awry. Even my Arnold Palmer was just "meh. (Did they change their iced tea??) My friend ordered a "The Painter" - a champagne cocktail and it looked like a watered down mimosa with lemon juice instead of orange juice ($12 - FEH!) And the enormous wine glass that the rose came in (Reidel crystal??) made the skimpy less-than-6-oz. pour look positively puny. ($10 - FEH again!) I am deeply saddened to have to downgrade Talulas as it was one of my absolute faves. So sad. So sad. Meanwhile - come have a cheese plate here - but be wary of the new barkeep.

(1)CHRISTINE B.
(5)Agnes C.
(5)Rosie C.

(5)Melissa V.
(5)Bari D.
Perfect. Waitress was knowledgable. Chef was excited to make us vegan food. Their mint water is excellent. Coffee is excellent. Tables are relaxing.
(5)Christine M.
I have yet to have bad meal at this place. Great cheese selection and I love how the menu changes with the seasons.

(4)Arielle L.
expensive, but great food. a friend and i did the tasting menu and it was a wonderful experience. definitely worth a visit.
(5)Tatiana F.
(4)M M.
(4)Brooke B.

(5)Amy U.
Pricey so all I can afford is a glass of wine and a cheese board... But dining in green flower paradise is totally worth the expense
(5)Chris W.
(2)Julie M.
(5)Steven Y.
This is the kind of restaurant that I feel urged to say: I want to come back again. The dishes are balanced in taste and nutrition. And I feel obliged to finish every bit of food.
(5)Rachel K.
The food was good but for my BF and my dad it wasn't enough food and they were both still hungry. Plus the waiter were OVER THE TOP when it came to explaining the food. By the time the apps finally arrived and the dude dropping off the food kept talking as we were trying to eat.
(3)Fima M.
(5)Carmen D.
I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Excellent cocktails, chill but nice atmosphere, great staff, and literally the best gnocchi's I've ever had. And I am very picky when it comes to my gnocchi's.
(5)Chris M.
Very hard to get reservations.. but VERY good and worth the wait. Top notch service and staff. Ambiance and attention to detail Highly recommend a cheese plate. Roasted Root Vegetables and Line Caught Tuna were RIDICULOUS! Can't wait to go back!!
(5)Katie R.
(5)Perry H.
(5)Daniela M.
it was a nice romantic dinner, the place is lovely and the food pretty much organic, great taste and good size of meal
(4)Evinrude A.
Food was good and the environment was excellent. The portion sizes were small and thus the prices were outrageous. The wait staff kept coming over and asking us how was the food. It was like they were programmed to keep interrupting us. We found it very upsetting. We will think twice before we return. Probably not.
(3)Hilary M.
Fantastic food, great drinks, and a beautiful setting!

(4)Angie K.
(4)Liz L.
(5)Arthur V.
(4)Sri C.
(4)Vittorio A.
Went for Sunday Brunch. Cocktails are pricey. Poached egg was probably the best egg I've ever had. I'd definitely go back for dinner.
(4)Miguel R.
I went here for dinner and had the waitress order an appetizer and entree for me. Everything was fantastic, and everyone at the table loved their meal. The drinks were good too. I'll definitely be eating here again.
(5)GF M.
Delicious, they do gluten free like Rock stars! Pricey but worth it. They are indeed famous for their cheeses
(5)Shannon G.
(4)Sally S.
Great atmosphere, great food and great service! The cheese is to die for. Tried the Cremont for the first time and it was one of, if not the best cheese I have ever had. Drinks were pricey, but very tastey homemade sangria. Not too expensive.
(5)P M.
OMG i loooove this place! If it weren't expensive (though understandable, bc the quality of the food is awesome) i'd be there more often!
(5)Phuong T.
Great place with great good. DON'T LET THEM SIT YOU ON TOP OF OTHERS. Plenty of room but they tend to sit people really close to each other.
(4)Ken H.
Fantastic food, ambience, selection. Almost went back for dinner a second night in a row...and wish I had. As good as it gets in Phila.
(5)Louis D.

Ok, just tried this place and I would easily give it 3.5 Starr! First of all the décor is so classy, you feel transported to a millionaire's country house: every room is bright, clean cut, with top notch finishes. And don't even start me on the garden! It is absolutely AMAZING. So décor=5... Food... how about it? Hm...menu is very interesting but the actual execution leaves something to be desired, so I would say 3. We tried half the brunch menu and there were some dishes which were just bland: duck fat fried sweet potatoes were raw in the middle and under seasoned. Frittata was just OK, lacking flavor. So many herbs out there, but none inside this dish. Crepes- not crepes at all, I make them, they are supposed to be very thin, delicate and airy. These were more of thick dough that was...baked? I mean the dish tastes good , but don't call it crepes. The lox on the other hand was great, just rightly seasoned and delicious. Service was perfect, thank you , Jill and staff. The pastry trio really should really be a part of the dessert menu, not the starters, as it was all heavily doused in sugar, like candy. Pumpkin pancakes were great, if a bit too sweet. All in all a great place , but food could be improved.

Loved it! Ambiance, cocktails, food! So romantic! A hidden gem

Favorite Philly restaurant. Beautiful and imaginative food. Engaged service without it being too much. And a gorgeous twinkly ambience. We went for our anniversary meal and it was a really special night. Don't forget to try the cocktails at the bar - delicious!

Wonderful ambiance and attentive waitstaff. Nicely sized (small) portions though the pricing is a bit steep given that

YUM! That's all I have to say. Go.
(5)Kris H.

(4)Lindsay D.

(5)Cassandra H.

(5)Leah G.

Absolutely amazing meal from start to finish!!

Great food! I have been there for dinner and brunch and have never been disappointed. The staff is really friendly. The atmosphere is great too. Highly recommend this place!
(5)Philippe S.
The food was exceptional. Portions are on the smaller side, but it is definitely a case of quality over quantity. The garden and the different interior areas are very different from each other, but all very nice and enjoyable.

Best cheese plates ever. Delicious, light food. Awesome cocktails. Great service. Overall good dining experience.

I rarely write reviews on yelp, and when I do I was either disgusted or amazed. i loved this restaurant. I made a reservation for 8:15 pm on a Monday night (tonight) and I was pleasantly surprised that both the inside and outside dining rooms were full. We arrived on time but still had to wait. Which my husband, daughter, and I were perfectly fine with. It gave us time to enjoy their delicious cocktails and enjoy the garden's ambiance. We were definitely not in a city anymore, we felt like guests at someone's home, a delightful start. The portions of the food were small, but rich and garnished with care. To start we had the Chilled Peekytoe Crab and Maine Lobster Salad, Summer Tomatoes, Lemon, and Hot Paprika, Mushroom Pâté en Croûte, Speck, Chicken Wing, Sunny Quail Egg, and Condiments, Parfait of Hudson Foie Gras, Cherries, Apricot Sauce, Sea Salt, and Brioche... DELICIOUS! Next we had the Marinated Halibut, Oxtail Stuffed Summer Vegetables, Sea Beans, and Saffron and the Grass-Fed Pennsylvania Beef and Braised Rib, Banyuls and Brown Butter, and Turnip DELICIOUS!! And for dessert you must have the doughnuts! We will be back.

talula is like catherine zeta-jones--sexy and refined, with just a little bit of crazy underneath. i eagerly awaited the arrival of talula's garden, as i had never been to the original, and i was very curious to see what a pairing of starr and olexy would bring. right from the moment you walk in, you see the juxtaposition. non-matching outdoor seating, comfortable small tables, a buffet/console table among the tables, pretty country-esque pictures... this is flanked by ridiculous 20 feet ceilings, a bar area that transmits sounds and voices like you're at your local watering hole. hence, the touch of crazy underneath... are you a upscale farmhouse, or happy hour meet-n-greet? the server was super-knowledgeable, patient, and plain ol' sweet. we got the curds & whey cheese platter, the gnudi were little cloud pillows bathed in a shallot jus. and let's talk about the little happy brioche buns topped with a spring-colored ramp butter. my scallops were good, my friend's beef was on the tougher side. and... get sides. get cheeses. get a dessert. the portions are *tiny* for the price. but i guess, if you are a refined lady like czj, you wouldnt eat til the point of full, huh? classy, refined, right? we had a highly attentive staff who constantly asked us for feedback. i appreciate this, and i was more than honest with them. i love that they want to continually improve, and i can't wait to go back.

A very nice brunch place

Everything was incredible; quality food, and amazing service. Cheeses were unbelievable, will be back again!

Absolutely oustanding. We came here to see what Brinn Sinnott (chef) of former Noble American Cookery was up to. Amazing. I suggest the Ragu.
