Read Nancy S.'s review and can only conclude she got lost and ended up in the wrong place. Absolutely in the Top 5 of "all-time" Philly roast pork sandwiches. Anyone who really knows Philly knows it ain't about the "chee-steaks"... what puts Philly on the map is the Italian roast pork with brocolli rabe and sharp provolone. You can go all the way to the Italian market on 9th and Christian if you like... but if Norristown is closer... head to Sessano's and experience the real-deal.

ExCellent pork sandwiches. Super juicy and very tender. This almost rivals Lenny's, as hard as that is to say. Definitely stop by if you are in the area. Service is very amiable and the owneris great.

When I first tried Sessano's, it was after a morning of thrift shopping (this place is right next to Impact! in Norristown). I really wanted a Tuna Salad Hoagie so I immediately went for that. I loved it so much, that I subsequently ordered it every time I visited Sessano's again. Fast forward a few months. A frustrating morning spent at the DMV demanded a yummy sandwich from Sessano's to make up for the DMV-induced headache. I tried to order a Tuna Salad Hoagie, but I was told they were out of Tuna Salad. That was probably the best bad news I could have received... why? Because, I actually had to look at the menu!... For the first time, I noticed the "bragging" posters of their Roast Pork. I decided to give it a try. I was kind of surprised that it was a bit more expensive, but guess what? IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. Do not skimp on this hoagie. Get the sharp provolone and broccoli rabe, to make it authentically "Philly". HANDS DOWN, easily the BEST ROAST PORK HOAGIE I've ever had. Tuna-- wha? I will probably use them for catering sometime soon, as I've seen in other reviews that they are happy with their services. A Norristown gem!

Office takeout order today was from Sessano's. What a treat ! Wasn't in the mood for pork, so I tried the zep. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's a better zep than the "famous" place on Main Street. The roll was a perfect combination of crisp, soft & chewy. Filled with just the right amount of excellent meats and cheese. Really, really good ! I'll be sure to order again soon and try the pork.

I am not going to go so far and say the experience was a complete wash but in an area where zeps, cheese steaks, & hoagies are sold every where why not try to make great ones using fresh ingredients. It's the difference between keeping a customer & losing one. I'll go back to try the pork sandwich that seems to beat out Santangelo's in taste tests every where & see what all the hype is all about. Then again I would rather skip Santangelos & this place and go to Steppys where I know the pork sandwich is amazing.

Yes, the roast pork is outstanding. I totally forgot to ask for cheese, but I didn't realize it until I was almost finished eating. That's how good the pork is. Two important points about the regular sized sandwiches based on my experience with their roast pork and zep: 1. They use the good bread. Other places use inferior bread for their smaller sandwiches. 2. They are quite large and stuffed with plenty of "meat". I (unfortunately) have a big appetite, and I find a regular to be quite satisfying.

Awesome Roast Pork....Awesome. I would eat it there, otherwise the roll gets soggy. Long hots and provolone. Best in the area! I haven't had anything else, because, well the pork is that good.

Best Pork Sandwich Ever! Gotta get the hot pork with sharp provalone and long hots. Do it! Do it!

Sessano Cafe & Deli is a charming spot right off from Route 202 and Johnson Highway! It's an Italian cafe and deli. Their hours aren't the best (they're not bad, but they're not open late), so try to stop in when they are open. There's ample seating. If you get to meet the owner, say hi, he's a cheerful guy. Much of their menu is made-in-house (try the homemade soup or poundcake). There are non-Italian choices on there, like breakfast choices or greasy appetizers (onion rings or fried mushrooms, anyone?). Don't get their cheeseburger (Black Angus) - while it has (awesome) french fries and a large pickle, the buns are large and dry. The patty itself is so-so. I felt adventurous, and paid for it. Definitely try their Sessano special hoagie - it has prosciutto, salami, capicolla, provolone, fresh (!) mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted peppers, and basil. We think we saw olive oil in there too. It's as fresh as it sounds! Their large (12") is $12.95, while the regular is $6.95. Worth every bite. I've had it three times so far and LOVED it each time.

Like described in other reviews, this is a deli counter mainly but has table seating. Owner very pleasant and conversive. Pork sandwich is delicious but very, very juicy. Make sure you get plenty of napkins when you sit down and eat. It's also very generously-sized and the roll is very soft. You can grab an early dinner here as they close at 7 PM most nights. It's a very casual place for dinner and food is served on paper plates. During the dinner hour, if you want meatballs, the owner said it requires at least 30 minutes of preparation. The parking area is huge. Didn't check restroom.

Great little Italian deli on the outskirts of Norristown! Located in a somewhat rundown strip mall area but this was a good find. I've been there a handful of times, including ordering some deli trays for a work lunch back when my office was located around the corner. They use fresh bread and the deli meats and cheeses are good. Inside seating can get a little crowded around lunch time. I also stopped in for a breakfast sandwich on my way to work one morning - yum. It was a huge sandwich with plenty of eggs and cheese on a large, super-fresh kaiser roll...delicious. I'm a sucker for a good breakfast sandwich. Nice, friendly folks inside, will definitely return again. After reading about the pork sandwich I want to give that a try.

Ordered the pork for family birthday parties and every time it is a hit! Super nice people and reasonable prices. I would definitely suggest it!

Is the roast pork delicious? yes Is the sharp provolone out of this world? yes But, besides that, nothing special, and they have limited seating. I'd much prefer to go to a place like Eve's or Lou's for a zep. But, if you want pork, no one holds a candle to them.

Huge portions especially the French fries. Cheese steaks was big and meaty very cheesey. Pork sandwich was great.

Whilst on an excursion through the northern suburbs of Philly, we happened into this little pizza and deli shop. We have found that sandwiches of all shapes and sizes are readily available in this corner of Pennsylvania in the same way coffee shops are available in the Pacific Northwest. A deli has to really set itself apart. So we ordered a turkey deli on rye and a hot roast beef dipped in its own juice. Both sandwiches were good enough to curb a bit of hunger, but didn't move us as some others in the area had. I suppose to be fair the shop is apparently known for its pork sammy, but I contest a true mark of a great deli is its beef. Pork, as long as it's moist, is always tasty and flavorful. At least mostly. But beef can be difficult to truly pull flavor and moisture out and into the sandwich. This was not the best beef sandwich I've had in PA. And the service was cold as if addressing the customer was not the most important thing going on at the counter.

My daughter took her driving permit test yesterday, and I recall reading there was a great pork sandwich to be found right near the PennDot / DMV. A little research showed that to be Sessano Cafe and Deli. Tucked away in the old Logan Square strip mall, Sessano looks like any other unassuming lunch place. There are maybe a little lover half a dozen tables/booths. You order at the counter, and food is brought to you. As they were famed for their roast pork, both my daughter and I made that selection. She does not care for "stinky" cheese, so ordered the fresh Mozzarella rather than the excellent (and stinky) sharp provolone (which was hand shaved ... not rubbery deli stuff.) The sandwiches arrived well ahead of our fries, on fresh rolls that were much wider than the typical steak/hoagie variety. These were not off-the-shelf Amoroso's. A shiny crust, probably egg-washed surround ed a chewy interior just firm enough to hold whatever went inside without interfering. I'm guessing these are Conshohocken Bakery Zep rolls. Upon first bite, my daughter exclaimed that it tasted "just like mine." Typically, I make roast pork as a New Year's tradition using a big bone-in pork shoulder and a recipe / technique taught to me by an old South Philly grandmother. It makes REALLY good pork, so this was a high compliment. Sessano's pork is evidently a nice, flavorful cut seasoned delicately, though ample garlic can long be detected once the sandwich has been gone. The texture is that of the "pulled" variety that is option at DeNic's at the Reading Terminal and pretty much the standard at John's on Snyder. Each bite is VERY juicy, but the sandwich is not so "overboard " as to make the roll soggy. With Paesano's the new Gold Standard (I haven't been to John's in awhile, but I am hearing hit-or-miss reviews) comparisons always abound. I would really have to taste them side by side, but am willing to go on record as considering Sessano in the top five anywhere. Good as the rolls are, a Sarcone's or Carnagi could put it over the top. That, however is a matter of taste. Service was very friendly, prices are reasonable, and even the chips were crispy and fresh. Fried came a little late, but thy were cooked-to-order and were the crunchy "coated" variety.. quite good. I am looking to try some of their other sandwiches (they have Zeps.. a Norristown specialty.)

Sessano is lunch counter food (with table seating) at its best. The hot and cold sandwiches and soups are a delight. We have never had a bad experience there, either in regards to service (consistently very cheery and friendly) or the food (try the signature hot pork sandwich with cheese). Orders are filled quickly. Prices are average, but I'd call them "inexpensive" given the generally high quality of the fare. The only drawback to this restaurant is the limited seating, which can get tight at meal time.

I live around the corner and will be there often. I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and walking in there felt like I was home. The sharp provolone is the right one, and cannoli shells are super fresh. I wish they were open later for dinner, but no biggie. Next time you think you want some cheap over advertised foot long, or are tempted to order on-line from pizza places that don't know the meaning of 'fuhgettabout it!' go to Sessano's.

Everything, and I do mean everything, on their menu is fantastic! I visit Sessano several times a month. Since day one the staff has always been friendly and welcoming. I think I'm on a first name basis with all of them. I've used them for catering both work and personal functions. Just tell them what you want, how many you're feeding, and when you need it by. They always put together PLENTY of food. Their award winning pork speaks for itself. When I bring friends here for their first time, they always go for it. Nobody has ever been disappointed. Fantastic food, great staff, and a nice place to sit and eat. You can't ask for much more from your local sandwich shop.

Recent college football road trip to Notre Dame, and a Sessano hoagie tray was the hit of the trip. Delicious food, friendly people & as others have alluded to, the roast pork is worth driving out of your way to sample.

Pork sandwiches second only to Lenny's in Conshy.. A bit more pricey than I like to see at a deli, but the food is very good

saw some great reviews about this place. but our food was horrible. the hoagies were small and our pasta dinner tasted processed like frozen food. won't go back there and waste my money again...very disappointing.

I've lived in the Philly area all my life. For a time in S. Philly. This restaraunt has the BEST pork sandwiches I have ever eaten!! I've stopped by with friends occasionally and they all rave about the pork. I understand they have many other items that are great, but I've never tried them, because the pork is so good. We order a tray of the pulled pork when we have small get togethers for lunch. Just try it you'll agree.

I work in Norristown so I consider myself rather familiar with the food choices on the Borough. Sessanos is arguably the best place in town, overall. I recommend the roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe... it is top notch. Easily best roast pork sandwich I've ever had. The hoagies are also high quality; try the Sessanos special... its a great sandwich. This is a lunch joint so they're not open during dinner hours. Also stay away from any chicken items; while its not bad, it's not great either and you'd be missing out on the top notch hoagies and pork. Service is great and friendly. No complaints.

THE BEST of Pennsylvania!! I went to 4 Hoagie places in Pennsylvania, some twice (two Lee Hoagie locations, and the Food Network's famous 'Pat's' and 'Gino's' ) in Philly and hands down my last day, I wanted to go back to end my Pennsylvania eating experience here at Sessano Cafe and Deli. I recommend award winning Roast sandwich with sweet peppers. They start slow roasting the meat 4 hours before they serve it. It's run by a small Italian family. The father; Santino Ciccaglione is from Central Italy out side of Roma and somehow landed in the odd small town called Norristown, PA. The food is worth the trip. Don't expect a fancy environment, it's a deli style restaurant with seating and just good food, the atmosphere is your happy taste buds. Santino said he has shipped the sandwich to people out side the State, it's REALLY that good!!! (I am personally plotting to get him drunk one night, hoping to have him spill the beans of how he makes it). In the meantime, Santino my address is.... I took to photos that are on Yelp check them out. Bon Appétit - Stacy Poulos PostcardTravelers

I finally tried Sessano's the other day only after buying the $5 for $10 Yelp deal. I had attempted to check it out once before, but my TomTom failed me. Alas, with all the positive Yelp reviews, I decided I needed to try it out once and for all. Their "website" lists their roast pork at $6.95 and another $1.25 for broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. I try not to spend upwards of $9 for weekday lunches, but with the Yelp deal, I was good to go. While waiting to order, I checked their menu in the store. The lone $6.95 price on their site is the price for a "regular" sandwich, while a large is $13.50. Before ordering, I asked how big the large was and the size gestured by the female employee was essentially that of a normal 12" hoagie. Since I didn't feel like spending $15+ for a large hoagie after adding rabe and cheese, I went with the regular. When she told me how much I owed, I mentioned I had a Yelp voucher. She then wrote down the voucher code from my phone and seemingly had no idea what Yelp even was. Not sure how that's possible... No matter. After a little confusion on her part, she accepted it as payment and I soon got my sandwich to go which I took back to my office. I've had plenty of roast pork sandwiches and Sessano's was pretty good. Definitely not as good as Dinic's (which is somehow cheaper), but solid. My problem with it was the size (see the picture I uploaded). The sandwich, while quite thick, was basically the same length as a hot dog. For $9, I expect to be full, but this sandwich wasn't completely filling.

My meatball grinder with sharp provolone, fried onions, green bell peppers and long hots was the best I've had in a long time. The meatballs were HOMEMADE not frozen or purchased elsewhere.

  • Jason S.

Italian hoagie didn't have enough meat and the meat it did have on it was to thick for me. To much balsamic vinegar on the sandwich as well. The bread was only good thing about the sandwich in my opinion Roast pork sandwich meat was very tasty. Bread was good, but once again not nearly enough meat. Cheese n long hot peppers were ok

A-OK. We came in for a quick lunch on a weekday. It was really quiet; in fact, we were the only customers! M ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and I had the hot roast beef sandwich. We both thought our sandwich didn't stand out, but it was tasty enough. Our sandwiches came with chips and a pickle on the side. The people working there (or owners, don't know) were super friendly and welcoming, the TV was on, we watched a silly game show, it was all good. I don't think I would come back though. I'd say you can get a similar sandwich from a diner and sit in a nicer place.

The best roast pork sandwich in the area. The Sessano special is amazing too! This is a family run business and everyone there is friendly and helpful. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and treat, eat here!

We've tried three of their more popular sandwiches, all good, but below we listed them in descending order of quality, for us: Sessano Special (Hoagie) - Cured meats blended together really well, everything fresh, great roll, the fresh mozz on it was a really nice touch. Large Roast Pork w Broccoli Rabe - Very good flavor, the right moisture, not too dry or sloppy-juicy, rabe was well-seasoned, cheese was nice and sharp (Note: My husband is spoiled by having DiNic's on the Navy Base each day, so roast pork needs to contend with them for his judgement.) Italian Sausage sandwich - Didn't stand out compared to the two above. Wasn't bad, but it would have been better with hot sausage. All in all a good stop in Norristown for sandwiches.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
