The seafood here was absolutely great. First off the oyster selection was amazing. The menu from start to finish has a great variety of fresh seafood items . There are also daily specials and a happy hour as well. If you're in the area and craving seafood don't hesitate , give them a try because you won't be disappointed.

I have been to docs more than 5 times. The ambiance is great I love the theme of the place and the mermaids painted on the outside and statues. I always get nervous with seafood so far away from the ocean. I always ask where the seafood comes from and when it was brought in. The staff here is extremely knowledgeable. They could answer all of my questions. I would run into one of the chefs at a local bar not far away from docs some nights really cool and down to earth guy and said he really enjoyed working there. The food is good. I have never had a bad meal here. I have had everything from a lobster roll to shrip. The last time I was there I had a spicy seafood pasta thing and it was soo goooooddd. Really spicy and everything was soft and nothing was chewy. They have a good selection of wine and they have a few different scotches. You can see them prepair the oysters and shuck them at the bar. I know the waiter told me they get them from all over bit he said mass and Maryland were where the oysters came from that night. If you are in the area I would def recommend going to docs. I will be back here in my future trips to the area. PROS: -good food -ambiance is amazing - friendly staff -good parking lot

Just visited Doc's again while in town on business with some coworkers. I used my free Yelp coupon for a delicious shrimp appetizer. My seafood salad was perfect and my coworkers raved about their meals. Our waiter Chris was so attentive, helpful and friendly can't wait to go back. Would certainly recommend this place to anyone who wants a great meal and great service.

How can you not like a seafood brunch on the weekend? We had some oysters to start followed by a delicious lobster frittata and a smoked salmon Benedict that was outstanding. Really good coffee as well, all surrounded by a bluesy sort of old fish market atmosphere. I dig it.

I came here with a friend just before noon. We stood there at the entrance waiting. The bar tender ignored us, the servers were setting up the tables and glanced at us. There was a woman eating oysters at the bar. We felt like we didn't belong. We just left and asked ourselves, was it open for business?

Came here for brunch while at the Peach Festival. Olivia, our server, was awesome. She suggested pints and led us through the menu, and was a good sport with our wisecracks. We had blackened shrimp omelette (yum), Irish hash, breakfast banana split and a sandwich. No complaints at all, and we will definitely be back.

I went to the restaurant on a Wednesday for all you can eat crab and fell in love with the place. Fantastic food and a great atmosphere

Good food, not great, and not a very good value considering the high prices. We ordered the Seafood Cioppino and the Fried Maryland Combo. The Cioppino, at $23, was pretty good, with a decent amount of seafood, but a minimal amount of linguini and a somewhat bland tomato sauce. The Maryland combo, at $27, had a nice-sized crab cake, but only two shrimp, two scallops, and two oysters. Overpriced for the amount of seafood provided. We ate at the bar, and the service was good, but they don't offer rolls with your dinner unless you ask. We'd probably try somewhere else if in the area again

I love seafood and this place is one of the best in this area. Salmon is on point and there prices are just right. I think the oysters were the best thing available.

Meh.... To summarize how the night went, it started off high, dipped really low and then finished somewhere in the middle. A peak, valley and plateau if you will in terms of our dining experience. Allow me to explain. After getting seated right away, the waitress was very friendly and gave us the run down on the restaurant and drink specials. I had the Jim Beam ice tea thing which tasted just like iced tea with a hint of Beam in it. I mean it tasted exactly like iced tea so mission accomplished on that part. For an appetizer, we had the calamari which was excellent and I had the lobster bisque which was very creamy but oh so good. On to the entree portion of the evening where things took a nose dive both food and service wise. I had ordered the seared ahi tuna tacos which were heavily doused in wasabi dressing. Mind you I enjoy wasabi but this was so much so that all I could taste was a hint of ahi and a whole lot of wasabi clearing out my sinuses. No seriously, if I ever have a winter cold, I will just come here and eat this dish as it will clear up any stuffy nose stat. So yeah, way to heavy on the wasabi. My girlfriend ordered the crab cake and steak entree which was one of the most underwhelming items we both have had in awhile. I mean the crab cake was a crab cake, nothing special. The steak was cooked properly but didn't have much flavor. And considering the entree was $29 or so, one could get the same crab cake steak combo at an Outback for less and get more flavor out of both. In addition to our mediocre meal, we never saw the waitress again until we were finished with our meals and were waiting for about 10 minutes before she stopped to ask if we wanted dessert. She did not once come back to check on us after the entree's were dropped. The only interaction we had with the staff was from the bus boy, who cleared our dishes. And before you say maybe she was slammed with other tables because it was a busy Friday night, no, I saw her standing and talking to another server for a majority of the night. And finally we have dessert. Our server came out with an oar of desserts which you could choose from. All were served in small 4oz? glasses. The key lime was on point as well as the cookies and cream pie. Hence it made up for the sub-par entree we had earlier. Would I return to Doc Magrogan's? I really do not know. Part of me wants to give them a second chance but the other part of me says it's overpriced for mediocre food and half-ass service. Hence the 3-star review as it started out 4-star strong, dropped to 2-stars during our main meal and finished around 3 stars after dessert.

Traveling on business, place wasn't super busy but Sunday eve, service was good, had some oysters very nice, Buffalo Wings (sauce could have been hotter) then a blackened Tilapia very tasty. We had a coupon from hotel so free App and over all check with tip $60 for two people. If in town worth the extra walk past Longhorns steakhouse

A great spot for seafood and more starts with a convenient shopping center location (minutes off route 81), parking, and easy access. The building is spacious and nicely decorated. Varied seating choices including booths and many bar stools. Besides some loyal locals, Doc's is also popular with people traveling through or visiting as there are hotels nearby. Waitstaff and hostesses greeted and served us well both at lunch and dinner. Good menu selections for lunch and dinner and specials are sometimes featured too. Selections are not just seafood as would be expected but other items too. I tried and enjoyed a lunch fish taco special. At dinner, the fish and chips and oysters on half shell were both excellent. A great selection of oysters is available... and if you like them you might try Monday with evening special prices (as of this revue...). Check out online menu for other specials. The large bar has decent beer selection and drafts. The bartenders were attentive and helpful, conducive to the nice crowd and atmosphere. Drink specials were featured at happy hour. Some items are a bit pricey for Scranton area but not ridiculous. Seafood isn't cheap anywhere and this is probably the best seafood in a many mile radius.

Had another great experience at Doc's. The oyster selection is great and tasty. The food is top-notch, great drinks, and the service was fantastic. Our server Marissa was the best. She did a great job, made sure all the food was perfect, and drinks were flowing. She made the dining experience perfect.

Food was exceptional but expensive. Had the Maryland grill. Cosisted of 2 shrimp, 2 oysters, 2 scallops, 1 small crab cake for $27.00!!. Beer was $6.00 even in a bottle! Service was very attentive.

Came here with some friends back in Nov '13, so this is a bit overdue. The place has a great atmosphere and the oysters were very tasty. The food was overall pretty good and it's a nice addition to the area. However, the service was very slow, which was frustrating, especially since it wasn't that busy on the day we went. Overall, it's a solid place for NEPA and the oysters were good. I would just be aware that service is fairly slow, so don't try to cram in a meal here when time is of the essence.

We came mothers day for the second time, freindly servers and staff, free apps with Yelp coups. The first time we came, the food was amazing especially the oysters who seasonally change for those picky seafood lovers (like myself). I really know FRESH seafood, as I grew up on the shore and always had fresh seafood for dinner in the summer. Nothing beats THAT. Not Docs either and this time we were a little disappointed. My Mother ordered the regular menu Seared Scallops for 28. The dish was small honestly and a little dry. The risotto was alright but the rest of the dish was a skimpy. My caesar salad with salmon was nice but i can really tell that farmed slamon is dirty. It has that ammoniaesque flavor. The server never brought us complimentary salads with our entrees OR our biscuits this time. Even though we ordered 135 dollars worth of entrees and apps. We were disappointed by that and the bar drinks were mixed up and late. (As requested to be served with our meals) The oysters however were great as usual. I really enjoy them. Mermaid food always cheers me up.

Delicious! Great atmosphere, and delicious fish n' chips! The New England clam chowder was perfectly creamy, and the lobster bisque had plenty of lobster in it. Great place, but a little pricey.

From the wine list to the oysters offered, Doc Magrogan is the best seafood I've had in the Scranton area. It is pricey, so be prepared to pay... but it's worth every penny. I've had both fresh fish prepared by the chef (delicious) and the mussels when I went during Lent (also mouthwatering). I LOVE raw oysters, and the price for what Doc's offers is reasonable and every oyster was delicious. I highly recommend!

This was my second time here and we brought 4 "newbs" with us. We drove from Binghamton, NY for the all-you-can eat crab legs on Weds night. We were seated right away and our waitress was very personable and attentive throughout. We all ordered the All-you-can eat and they did a great job supplying us with refills as needed. A few in our party ordered appetizers which were all very good, and one ordered from the raw bar and said "I have ordered from raw bars in some of the most expensive seafood houses in the country--these oysters were by far the best I've had" Everyone enjoyed their meal and are eager to come back to try out some other dishes on the menu. If you want good seafood but cannot make it to the shore--then I seriously recommend trying Doc's out.

My family and I drove over to Moosic, PA for the movies and after had what was seemingly the most sensible option, Doc McGrogans. The experience began well with a nice staff but when we ordered the calamari, it was the most horrible appetizer ive had in years. Later, other family members ordered the clam chowder, which when I tasted it could only be described as a mix of sweat, salt, and butter. This was later waived after a delicious lobster roll, which was brought out after a wrong entree, but when i finally did get it it was by all means superb. After the meal our waitress sincerely apologized and gave us a free tiramisu, which was good. Not the greatest dining experience, but nevertheless, a great lobster roll can be had.

I had the pleasure of going here this past valentines day for dinner. Started the night with a glass of sangria, while waiting for our table, which was great! Not overly sweet, but very flavorful. My boyfriend and I had 24 oysters, 6 varieties 2 each. The menu gives you a detailed description of how each oyster is going to taste as well as it's origin. I was amazed at how accurate the descriptions were. The oysters were the cleanest and freshest I've ever had, absolutely delicious! For an appetizer we split coconut shrimp in a Guinness batter with a honey mustard sauce, again fantastic. As for entrees, I had the Phyllo wrapped salmon and my boyfriend had the swordfish, needless to say talking was at a minimum once the food arrived, it was that good! Brandon was our waiter and he was extremely friendly and knowledgeable! Can't wait to go back for more oysters!

Went to Docs for dinner last week. Man this place is AMAZING!! Fantastic calamari...spicy cioppino...even the salmon was great...and I don't like salmon! It's an hour away for me...we stopped on a whim whike driving through. I will definitely take a drive back just to eat there again!!

On a disgustingly cold and snowy Thanksgiving eve, my family ventured into the most random town -- Moosic, PA -- to stay in a hotel on our way to New York. While exploring the classic strip-mall options (Qdoba, Panera, Applebees, etc.), we saw something different that neither of us had heard of, and saw the sign: Doc's Oyster House. Ok, sure! They didn't mind that we had two kids; in fact, there was a kids' menu. The drinks were pretty strong and the food was solid. Nice wait staff and hosts. Overall, a very good experience arose out of what we expected to be a bleak situation for dinner. Nothing to write home about, but I'd still recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly elevated dining experience in the area.

It's a chain restaurant. Why say more? Whenever I have a say about where I eat, a chain restaurant is never even a passing thought. In the few instances when I have no say, and end up at one, the end result is always the same - it sucked. Thus it was at Doc Maggrogans. Awful food and awfully expensive. If you live in NEPA and would rather go to any chain restaurant rather than the local joints, you need a serious gastronomic intervention. The only people more seriously demented are those who would actually wait in line to get into places like Olive Garden when they are in spitting distance from a local place with authentically good food. If you're one of these people, read the YELP reviews on local places and find out what you're missing.

Freaking delicious! I went for lunch w a friend. Chris was our server. I can't begin to tell you how great service makes all the difference when you go out. He was attentive and friendly. I got the house pinot Grigio and it was delectable. For food I got the salmon salad. Simple, light, great flavors. My friend got the calamari. Also delish. Not over fried, just the right amount of seasoning. I'll def be back to try their raw bar.

Ate here recently on a Friday during Lent.... The food was pretty good, service was great even though they were slammed, and the drinks were pretty strong. Only thing that was a little off was the pricing. For how much the meals and appetizers cost, you don't receive a lot of food. Other than that, I'd say this place was great!

First time for this restaurant, visiting fam out of town. Our waitrees Bernadette was awesome. Friendly, fast and with good memory. Asked for extra lime with first Bloody Mary and she remembered to bring it unasked for on the second. Got the Mediterranean fish salad...they did NOT skimp on the good stuff! Big slab of salmon, a good handful of chunk crab, a few shrimp....very happy. Super yum!

I have to be honest and say that it's the kind of luck of the draw. We've had both great service/food as well as horrible service/food here at Doc's. If you get a hot plate of Cease & Desist Fries, they are to die for as well as their crab cakes. We've been here just about every other Sat night since May. Since Aug I have to say our visits were all NOT so great. Food has been served cold, the server was cold or the food just didn't taste as fresh and not the same as previous months. This unfortunate because it was our date night dinner spot. Not sure if we'll keep going, but if you get there on their good day the food is excellent.

While visiting for the weekend, we had a reservation for a Saturday night which was good, since the place was packed. Since this is technically a chain (I believe there's about 4 locations) and since I don't live back home in Scra'un anymore and most likely won't be back here because of the distance, I'll give it a quick Pro/Con list: PROS: -Mixed drink with Sailor Jerry, Grand Marnier, pineapple & cranberry juices was refreshing and strong...I was buzzed before the meal came out -Server was friendly and helpful. On a completely unrelated note, she had anchors for earrings (love that they keep up with the nautical theme) -First time trying raw oysters (I think we got the Ware variation), and they were delicious and fresh and exactly as I had anticipated them -Two other people in my party got the Yellowfin Tuna and the mixed seafood meal and both said they were delicious. My grilled scallops were also bangin' and buttery. -Giant oyster cracker bread was warm and yummy. CONS: -Overwhelming menu for what all basically sounded the same. -We ordered our oysters as an appetizer and got our entrees first and had to ask for the oysters to accompany the meal. Not a big deal, though. -While the seafood was fresh, the portions were kind of small for the price. Particularly my scallops. I think I counted four and the rest of the dish was just an overload of grilled veggies and mashed potatoes. -Speaking of the mashed potatoes, they were gross. Not creamy at all and tasted like potato buds from the box. If I do happen to come back, I'll skip sitting at a table and dining and just opt for booze and oysters at the oyster bar.

I grew up in Kansas, so I don't know much about seafood. I do love oysters, though. We have been in Scranton for nine years but I just assumed this place was like a chain and we avoided it. In fact it is a Pennsylvania operation with only four locations. We had a dozen oysters, got to choose from 10 varieties, and they were wonderful. My wife had grilled swordfish served on a bed of quinoa, corn and black beans that was marvelous. I think I mentioned that I am from Kansas, so I had the Maryland combo which was fried shrimp, scallops and oysters. It was predictably boring but very well-prepared and I enjoyed it. Great understated decor, exceptionally good service. We will go back again.

Summary - Do NOT miss this place! The staff is friendly, attentive and helpful. The hostess saved me from what could have been a trip to a national chain for a standard meal. Now for the whole story. I'm in the Wilkes-Barre area for one of the sites I support staying in Moosic. Up the hill are several places to eat. Two of the staff members where I work recommended Docs. So there I went for dinner. I get there and the place is packed! 30 - 45 minute wait... Seems it was all you can eat crab legs... who knew?? EVERYBODY! That plus a couple of private parties taking place. I got a little whiny with the hostess, didn't even see a place at the bar to site and eat. She came to my rescue and managed to find a spot for me to sit. The menu had nothing but fabulous items. I ordered a Goose IPA (felt obligated sitting at the bar) which was very good. Great starters - I had a cup of New England Clam Chowder - excellent, smooth and buttery! I followed that with three different oysters on the half. They have a menu for the oysters that reads more like a wine list with the description - 'smooth buttery taste', 'slightly salty with sharp finish', and so on. They did not dissapoint. Freshly shucked, cold and tasty. Followed that with Blackened Mahi Mahi with Mango salsa. Perfect seasoning. Great side of grilled veggies. The Mahi was close to gulf coast standard. Being stuffed at this point I wanted to at least see what they had for dessert. A young lady brings out a board of these cute little parfaits. Turns out that is the size of the dessert. I would call it perfect. Just enough to be good but not so much you want to die. I had the peanut butter chocolate at her suggestion. She was so right. The price for this? Only $43 before tip. I'm about to see what my bosses pain level is on an expense report. :-) So if you find yourself in Wilkes-Barre, Pittston, Scranton, Moosic area, stop in here and enjoy a great dining experience.

I decided on a four for this because the raw bar was really good. Magrogan's had about 10 different oysters and they were all fresh and shucked to order. The raw bar items were a little pricey, but this is somewhat expected since we aren't exactly on the coast or anything. The two fish dishes that we had were not very good at all. I ordered the buffalo fish filet sandwich and the fish was VERY mushy. My wife ordered the fish and chips and there was way more batter than fish. So, if I was rating only the food, I wouldn't give Magrogan's more than a three but the raw bar items were a four and a half and a large part of that was due to my amazement with such a large selection of oysters in Scranton (of all places). We are glad we went, but not sure if we would go back.

We are new to the area and have had a hard time finding non big chain places with any reviews let alone good ones... so I feel like this one was a pretty good find. It was pretty crowded (6:30 on a Friday) but we got a booth for the two of us. They actually had a bigger wine selection than most places I have been to out here in PA because usually there is three choices.... red, white, or blush at every place. So I got a riesling and he got a beer. Then we got a few oysters. It was nice that the server had a good knowledge about them and you could get just one or two if you wanted. They had a pretty cool looking raw bar also. For our entrees he got a Lobster Roll and I got the fresh Halibut. They Lobster roll was seriously amazing. Amazingly fresh lobster on a garlic toasted roll. He got the fries with it and they were really good too. The food runner came out with my dish, but it was a trout.... and I obviously got the halibut. So they fixed the problem pretty quickly. The halibut was seriously good. Super fresh, cooked perfectly, great seasonings, great mashed potatoes and fresh steamed vegetables. For dessert they had dessert "shooters" perfect size to finish off dinner. To tell you the truth, I was NOT expecting this place to be so good. Nothing was frozen or "fishy" by any means. For this neck of the woods.... I would totally go there again!!

  • Kate E.

Food was good, but the service was extremely disappointing. We waited over an hour for our food and no one from the management team came by to apologize or to explain the delay. In fact, as a manager was going around from table to table asking how everyone's meals were, she walked right past our table to the table behind us and once again began asking the guests about their meals. If it would've been handled properly, it's certainly something that could have been forgotten. But ignoring us made the whole experience much worse and definitely stops us from going back to give this place another try. Also, our server was far from on top of his game...little things that make an experience nice were totally mishandled - every table around us was served bread immediately upon being seated, but we had to ask for ours; we weren't told about all of the specials, which we realized as we heard the waitress explaining them to the table next to us...again, all avoidable mistakes, but when you add it all together, it just made for a bad experience.

I was not impressed at all. We were a little early for a movie across the way and decided to go in for a drink and an appetizer. We had the calamari and a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was $12 for 4 shrimp. The calamari included much too much fried batter with no calamari attached to it. The bartender was ok but i hate it when wait staff looks like they would rather be somewhere else. Overall steer clear there are better choices in the immediate area.

  • Jae P.

I'm always a little suspicious of chain restaurants, but this one really delivered! We did happy hour, and were happy indeed with the appetizer specials. Orange sesame shrimp and crab deviled eggs were the highlight - The rosemary crème brûlée was off the hook. Would give the risotto balls a skip next time, though. The wine pour was very generous. Our server was very nice, and had good taste in wine. Good raw bar too. Wish there was one in Baltimore!

Unbelievable clams on the half shell! Huuuuuge! Good price...buck a clam. NE clam chowder hot and tasty. Fish is always fresh. When driving up to upstate NY from PA I always stop there. Waitstaff and bartenders are professional and helpful.

Started by trying lots of Oysters with my son. Little did I know her had never eaten them raw on a half shell before. So, this is the first place he ever did that and oh did we enjoy. Can't remember them all but enjoyed the Blue Point and most were wonderful. Next we had the New England Clam Chowder which was oh so rich and chuncky and Maryland Crab Soup which was good and filled with crab. We enjoyed our selves the entire weekend and this restaurant was a great find. If we are ever back in the area, we will be back.

Yesterday, I recieved an email detailing your promotions for this weekend. I decided to take my family of seven to your establishment for lunch. Over the years I have spent thousands of dollar in this resturant. Yesterday was one of the most unpleasant experiences I have had in any resturant. The advertised specials were not all available, the waitress said there were no daily specials, even though the waitress taking care of the table next to us detailed a special that we almost overheard. The food we finally ordered took forever to come, and not everyone was served at the same time. The waitress' attitude and demeanor was less than professional. The resturant appeared less than clean and it is looking shabby. I should have left when the lack of all the advertised specials were not available. This is the last time I, and members of family and local company will dine at this resturant.

My husband I frequently come here. Service is decent but I have never had a bad meal. We do happy hour here 5-7 5$ aps 1$ oysters 1/2 price drafts and house wine. Can't go wrong economical and best oysters in the area.

This place is the uber-specialty place for fabulous, fresh seafood. Their raw clams on the half shell were gigantic, and very fresh, and unbelievably sweet! They are a stuffed-mouthful each! No kidding! Their crab cakes are wonderful, with huge lumps of crabmeat. If you're looking for the freshest seafood, look no further. You've arrived!

Had a good experience here! Within walking distance of hotel I'm staying at. Happy hour is 5-7, half price draft beers and dollar oysters. Have several varieties of oyster to choose from, I had Delaware bay and James river. Pretty cool bar, friendly service, had some good beers on tap.No complaints here, plan on trying crab legs next time

My husband and I were shopping at The Shoppes at Montage and decided to try this place out for the first time. I'm a vegetarian and do not eat seafood, but went bc my husband wanted to try it. I ordered the Mac and Cheese and side of veggies. I never put salt on my food, ever! Except for this time. The Mac and Cheese was so bland. My husband ordered the James River Oysters (half dozen), Clams on the Half Shell (half dozen). The clams were not shucked properly. For a place that only serves seafood we found that odd. He had the Fresh Catch Tuna (which he said had no seasoning) for his entree. Immediately after eating the tuna he looked sick and had to use the rest room. We left to go home and had to stop along the way so he could throw everything up. He got so sick. Good thing we did our shopping first. I called and spoke w/the chef to tell him that they shouldn't serve those particular oysters or clams bc someone else might get sick. I don't know if they figured it was a Sunday and they would serve what they had left even though it wasn't fresh. We travel and have ordered seafood at many many different places. This place was awful. Our server was great, but the food was terrible, old and bland. I am supposed to get a call back, but still have not received a return call.

Nice place, went for first time and found the service great and the menu varied and interesting. Add a star if you are an oyster purist...the raw oyster menu was extensive and educational. It was a cool rainy night and I was looking for comfort food...was disappointed I did not find fried oysters on the menu (maybe it's a seasonal thing or I just missed it) but the bisque made up for that! Also thumbs up for the scampi and crab cakes. Portions were perfectly sized to be satisfying without being gluttonous...i definitely suggest trying various appetizers or the oyster bar menu as the prices seemed reasonable enough to encourage experimenting. The drink menu looked great too, will check into it more next time...

To be very honest, the food is ok. Not the best that I had tasted. But I must say. The manager Lisa is sooooo nice and friendly. I have to give her a good rating. First to start out with the food. The cooked food is ok as mentioned. The raw bar is extremely good and fresh! The oysters on the half shell is on the small side and pricy for both the taste andvthe size. Mostly are from VA and MD area. Here's where it's gets good. The clams are big and super sweet. The thing that surprise me it was $1.00 / each... so cheap and delicious! ! I recommend this!! The reason I said the manager is super friendly and PROFESSIONAL. I had help my son ordering a steak. We requested to be cooked med rare. When the steak arrived. My son started to cut it. After two to three cuts. The steak looks 150% well dine opposed to med rare. I saw the manager and told her this was way over cooked as a lot of restaurants do. So she had taken the wole dish back and said I will cook you another one. After a few min. She came back with the same steak but cut in the middle. She than asked me is this what I wanted. Very pink in thev center and juices still running from it. I said yes. And she said this was our steak. My bad!!! We didn't cut deep into the steak! Just a few cut into the sides. So I said sorry and said my mistake which I was going to taje t Bhai e plate back. She than said it's cold and already making a new order for us. Also asked my son if he wouks like anything to drink or eat meantime waiting for my mistake. I think she is very nice and PROFESSIONAL. .all the restaurant should have people train like her. Just for this I definitely will go back!! The place does need some renovation. Especially the restroom. Bottom line I would recommend thus restaurant since lisa the manager works there!

The food was great. I had salmon with horse radish mashed potatoes which were excellent. The server was also ver friendly. The only few issues I had were that the service was a little slow and they were out of a few beers. I was only in the Scranton area for work but they have some good n the Philly area so I will definitely have to go again. I try to go more than once to a place to give full review.

My family and I have dined here on a couple occasions and it was always good. They love to get all the fresh seafood, but I'm a land-lubber kinda gal. The last time we went my meal was terrible. I ordered the blue cheese steak and mashed potatoes. I guess they ran out of their blue cheese sauce so they just put room temperature New England clam chowder on my steak! It was so gross and ruined the whole thing. Not only is that pretty much the worst call to make when you're out of an item, but it's insulting to think I wouldn't notice (especially with something as distinct as blue cheese). Also, my mashed potatoes were barely warm and had no flavor. Every time my family suggests Doc Magrogan's now I resist and we go somewhere else like Cooper's or Blu Wasabi so they can get their seafood fix. I understand Doc's is a seafood restaurant but everything on the menu should be succulent and delicious. I feel like the quality has definitely decreased with every visit from when they opened to now.

We had a great dinner. Fantastic wait staff, went over and above for any request. My wife had Salmon over Sweet potato hash and she loved it. I had a filet and lobster tail and both were cooked to perfection. Drinks were right on target too!

Best selection of oysters by far in the area. They are fresh and crisp . The food is not microwaved like there competitors in Scranton ( Wally World ) . The staff is super friendly and the service is great . The restaurant is over the top clean . A must stop .

You drop people off at Sno Cove and realize you missed breakfast. You see that it is after 1 pm and decide that you might need to get food in your system before you melt in the summer swelter. You find all sorts of go to places, but have your heart set on seafood. Enter Doc's. Situated atop Montage Mountain, my friend and I decided that we should try this place out. Plus, you can't really go wrong with seafood. It was lunchtime, so the place wasn't packed. We arrived and were seated immediately. Our waitress was super nice and super friendly. We even had the day manager come by our table to see how we were doing. But I digress. So many options to choose from. I went with the crab cake sandwich and my friend went with the Tilapia. I was impressed with the crab cake, which was made even better with the Old Bay seasoning that was at the table. The Tilapia was good as well. Can't wait to try something else!!!

I have gone to the doc magrogan's about a dozen times the food was great except for tonight 12 16 14 my food was bland had no taste to it at all my wife portion size was ridiculously small for $30 tonight I found a piece of wax paper about an inch by an inch when I told the waitress she she told the manager and she asked the chef he said that it was the skin of a shrimp but you can plainly see that it was wax paper it had the teeth marks where u rip it off the box and they did nothing they didnt take nothing off my bill they gave me nothing I will never eat food from doc magrogan's again. on the other hand the oysters r the best in the valley ill still go back because I love the oysters but I will never order off the menu again very disappointed

Reservations were at 6:30. We were seated at 6:35. Appetizers did not arrive until 7:30! We were seated in a dim and shabby back room. Not sure if it was the holiday weekend that had them so behind or an incompetent server. Food was mediocre. Soup arrived warm not hot. Crab cakes were dry and sides were under seasoned.

Brunch was great! Crabcake Benedict with a creamy hollandaise and asparagus it was Delish! My hubby got the crab & cheese fondue Cheesesteak and said it was amazing! Excellent service, our waitress was very attentive and went above and beyond.

My wife and I came here in a group with five others. We were seated immediately; it wasn't too busy. It took 20 minutes to get our drinks after ordering them, and that was after tracking down our waitress or it would've been longer. She was absent the entire night. We waited 30-45 minutes just to put in our food order. We were one of three tables in our section. Then it took another 45 minutes to get our food. The food was nothing special, either. Two disappointing lobster tacos with plain, white rice for $13. We also tried the Fried Maryland Combo. For $25, I think we got more hush puppies than sea food. Two each of shrimp, scallops, oysters (that were way over breaded), one unimpressive crab cake, and a bowl of the most disgusting Cole slaw we've ever tried. We love Cole slaw. We've had a lot of Cole slaw, and this was the worst. We ordered a side of fries that we probably should have just had for dinner instead of paying for what we got. So, after our "meal" one man in our party complained to the waitress that the service was exceptionally slow and her response was that it was hard to orchestrate meals for a party of seven and making two sushi rolls took a long time. That just doesn't make any sense. Overall a huge disappointment, we have no plans to return or recommend this restaurant to anyone else.

Good food had the broiled platter food was well prepared but $22 is a little pricey for 2 shrimp, 2 scallops and 3-4oz of salmon. It would have been 5 stars if there had been 3 of each or at least all entrees came with a salad.

Service was excellent, prices reasonable and food was good. The portions are large so come here hungry. Conveniently located next to the hotels in the area. I'm not an oyster fan, but the scallops were very good.

Went back after an invite to "make it right" and sure enough they certainly did. Both service and food were fantastic and our portions definitely required " to go" boxes. One of managers, Stephanie Sluck, truly went above and beyond to see that we were pleased with our visit. We also had some very interesting conversation with her.

  • Mustache R.

Progressively worse each time we go there. Lukewarm seafood is not my idea of a good time. The lobster bake is tiny and I left still hungry. The crab legs they serve are comparable to what you get on a Chinese buffet.

Wow... exclamation mark. That was terrible. Leave in the middle of the night and try not to leave anything behind including your terrible hour long waitress spiel. The fresh- frozen- flown in from the freezer fish and yesterdays shucked oysters are shameful. Don't let the slow as molasses shuckers in the front fool you. They are shucking tomorrows oysters. Ever been to a real oyster house...I've worked in one in Boston. It's fast paced and oysters are hard to keep up with when you have to hand shuck dozens to order... so sorry Magrubers... get that casette tape deck back into your jeep and keep it pushing.

Review pertains more to service than food. We went to Docs after a local chain restaurant made a mess of our reservation and we needed a close alternative. I called for a party of 16 which they were able to accommodate. What I didn't realize is how, with a fairly full room, they were able to reconfigure tables to accommodate a fairly diverse party of 16 with 5 minutes notice. Service was spot on and exceeded expectations as they deftly managed wheel chair needs, kids with food allergies, split checks and everything else that goes with that type of circus. Oh and the food was good with typical fried seafood and grilled seafood options. My yellow fin steak was cooked well but had a little to much asian sauce on it. A small criticism for a job well done by the staff at Doc's. Oh

Run of the mill chain. Should have known better. Had the breaded tilapia and blackened tuna, both edible, but nothing special. Scranton, when will you produce a exceptional dining experience? Rolls were the highlight.

My 8oz steak, 2oz mashed potato, 8 pieces of sliced potato, and four pieces of broccoli cost $32. It was all very good but definitely not worth the money. My boyfriend, who never salts his food loaded his seafood Alfredo with salt and pepper just so he could taste something and it included 4 pieces of scallops and 5 piece of shrimp. It was $22. We also ordered fried calamari as an appetizer, which came in a very small bowl, was half calamari and half fried peppers and onions that looked like calamari but was not. When I asked to see their desserts, they showed me $7,8 shot glass sized "cheesecakes" and "mousses" which I refused because of how absolutely ridiculous that would have been. I am so furious that these criminals are getting away with stealing people's money right out from underneath them. If you get the chance to go here, do yourself a favor and consider setting them on fire instead. It will be much cheaper and definitely more satisfying.

Eating alone and greeted by a friendly waitress who sat me near the bar and Oyster bar. Waiter was , prompt and friendly, told me the Doc story and offered me the specials. He did say they specialized in oysters, but I decided to pass and go for a tasty Maryland crab soup. Actually had crab and a little bite...tasty. I decided on going for a shrimp dinner and the waiter said the Asian shrimp was very good. Well, I can't blame the waiter that the shrimp weren't cooked. I mean I could eat sushi every day, but thee is something about undercooked shrimp with an Asian sauce. The waiter was very prompt in taking it back and apologizing. The manager came over and apologized as well and said that a new dish was being made. Both the waiter and manager were great. It's the cook who needs to be trained. So I get my new dish, with a mixture of over cooked and under cooked shrimp and what I can best describe as crunchy jasmine rice and cold veggies. Now for the oysters I didn't order. Being alone you have time to watch what is going on around you. The Oyster Guy was funny to watch. Very adept at getting the oysters opened, but the he would clean out the bits with his gloved finger, and then he did something I never saw before. He would smell each oyster before plating it. Not sure why, but to me it saying maybe they have had a problem before, but to me it was very unappetizing to see him smell each oyster.....yummy. Good friendly service, but you can't eat that.

Huge restaurant, seemed hectic. We were sat right away, our waitress was nice and quick despite how busy she was. Monday is buckashuck, and I ordered a dozen and got 16 because the suckers weren't paying attention, no extra charge. Oysters were fresh, clean, delicious, only one adductor was a little stuck. My lady had the crab fondue in a bread bowl which was huge, and pretty good. The little necks were eh, nothing like the steamers in Maine. For entree I had a lobster steam pot. Probably the best mussels I've EVER had in the bottom, and the lobster was whole and perfectly cooked. All in all, great seafood house, especially this far from the ocean. Woulda given 5 stars but I'm a seafood snob...sorry

It's a snobby arrogant place to eat. We went there after peak hour for late dinner. Seated right away, but then we waited for loooooooooooooonnnngg for at least 30 minutes and NOBODY CAME TO EVEN SAY HI' HAVE YOUR WAITER CAME AND SERVED YOU?' While other customers who came after us got greeted and served right away. We were passed my many many waiters, yet nobody bothered to check on us. We were like invisible!! To make it worse, when I called the Manager on Duty, this young, un-experienced, oblivious guy who claimed to be a Manager picked the call and didnt even to apologize for the ridiculous wait . He didnt even bother to find where our servant was when we asked for him/her. The management really should hire more experienced Managers who actually have experience in Customer service and know how to handle customers better. Fancy name, fancy looking place, but NOT WORTH YOUR PENNY.

We went there on the Saturday before Mothers Day for an early Mothers Day dinner. The three of us were looking forward to our fresh seafood meal. After all, it is an oyster house! My mother ordered the steamed LITTLE NECKS as an appetizer. Found out that they're actually MIDDLE NECKS which are a bit larger than the smaller and sweeter little necks. No big deal. However, they were very gritty and sandy. Had to send them back and substituted shrimp cocktail instead which was fine. My wife ordered the lump crab meat appetizer and that was excellent. I ordered the clams on the half shell and they were fresh and tasty too. Dinner was the problem. I ordered the tuna which was fine. My wife ordered the surf and turf. The filet was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The lobster tail however was horrible! Tasted like ammonia which means it was on the verge of spoiling. My mothers scallops tasted the same. Amonia! We brought this to the servers attention and the manager apologized and offered replacement dishes and gave us a $25 gift card to encourage our return. There is no way we would go back here again. Very disappointed in the seafood.

This is a great place for fresh fish and seafood dishes in the area. They shuck the oysters in front of you at the bar. The selection of fresh fish is always extensive and you can have it prepared a number of ways. The appetizer coconut shrimp is excellent as well as the calamari. Drink selections are good and the service has always been exceptional. We have dined here at least once a week for over a year now.

Loved this place! Always had a great experience here and the food was fantastic. Their martinis were so yummy, I usually had the raspberry truffle martini. For appetizers we've had the coconut shrimp, the crab and cheese fondue and wasabi pea crusted ahi tuna. Everything was good but sometimes they put too much wasabi sauce on the tuna and it over powered it. I almost always ordered the sea scallops Asian seared, the sauce was delish. One time I ordered the lobster roll hoping it would be as great as one in Boston but that was not the case..so I stuck with the scallops. My fiancé loved the mahi mahi blackened with the mango salsa. After your meal the come around with these mini parfait desserts in many flavors so you can't say no and they're so small you always have room. Perfect ending to a perfect meal. I always left here feeling fully satisfied.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere. The rolls were delicious and calamari tasty but had too many peppers. The lobster Mac and cheese was really good and very filling. The tiger fish was good but rather small. We were happy to find this restaurant on our way to Virginia!

Pleasantly surprised considering the other not so great reviews. I had the cashew encrusted tilapia and the serving was large and cooked perfectly. Husband had the raw platter, we split a salad and calamari. No complaints on the food, everything was good, service could have been a bit faster but our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. For seafood in this area Id definitely go back.

My parents come here all the time and rave about it. Tonight they brought me there and I have to say I don't understand why they like it so much. Now I'm a New Yorker and realize I can be snobby about food but I really just didn't feel there was any wow factor, or flavor, in the food. My step brother had a Ceasar salad to start and it was extremely soggy and tasted like bottled dressing. My boyfriend and I shared the clams casino and oysters doc-a-feller, both tasted fine but both and too much stuffing and not enough clam/oyster. Parents both got the New England chowder, again, fine but not great. For entrées dad had fish and chips, delicious! Step mom and step brother got scallops, they were cooked perfectly but lacked seasoning beyond salt and pepper. Boyfriend got the bouillabaisse which was awful! Basically just pasta and seafood in an oily garlic sauce, totally lacking in any flavor beyond salt and pepper. I got the tuna. One of the worst tuna dishes I've ever had. Ordered it medium rare and it was medium well, additionally it was insanely small and bland, the veggies that came with it were undercooked, and the potatoes tasted dry like they'd been seating under a heat lamp. There are only 2 reasons this place gets 3 stars instead of 1...1) the oysters were EXCELLENT! Fresh, crisp, and heavenly! 2) our waiter, Richard, was the highlight of the night! He was so knowledgable, funny, and accommodating of us! He turned a very blah dining experience into a wonderful evening!

Let me start by saying this place has the best service ever. Our bartender Billy is a real asset to the company. Now to the food . The buck a shuck oysters are the best. Fresh well described and a lot of different type of oysters to choose from . Monday night 4 till closing select oysters are only a buck . My girlfriend had the sirloin steak it was perfect for a oyster house. This place is worth stopping in. The menu has a lot to offer for the non fish eating also . So long Coopers !!

It was difficult for me to decide whether to issue a three or four star review for Doc's. Yes, I liked it, and yes, I'd go back. But I wouldn't run. I decided to round up, based on the evident commitment to the restaurant's concept, the exceptional service we received from John, and the huge transformation undertaken to create a mostly pleasant, mostly authentic atmosphere. Let's back up for a second - an oyster house in Northeastern Pennsylvania? Really? This is one of the few - and perhaps the only - place in the region at which one can dine on raw oysters, and definitely the only place that puts an emphasis on it. This alone makes it unique (again, for the area) and I'm thrilled it exists here. The theme of the space aims to invoke a classic early 1900's environment, with small patterned black and white tile, dark wood paneling and elaborate fabrics. There are also dozens of photographs of the owner/founder Dave Magrogan on the walls, which I thought was very strange, since he already named the place in honor of himself. Make no mistake, this is still a new-ish building situated in a very suburban locale (an open-air "lifestyle" shopping center surrounded by an office park). However, the interior does a pretty good job of making you forget that. You'd never know this used to be an "authentic Irish experience" in the form of Kildare's (another concept from the same company). When I mentioned the "mostly pleasant" atmosphere, I was referring to the very obvious - though not overwhelming - oceanic odor that greets you upon entry. It didn't bother me, but might be enough to make some people turn around and leave. I suppose it's the price you pay in order to watch oysters being shucked in front of your own eyes. Side note: if you really want to be taken back to 1912, visit Mansour's Market in the Petersburg section of Scranton - that renovation is even more convincing. People come here to eat, though, so let's talk about the food for a moment. Admittedly, I did not have any oysters, but the oyster menu appeared to be comprehensive. There were about a dozen selections, each with a full description and geographic origin. John mentioned that the harvest dates were just a day or two earlier than our visit. I was looking for something more substantial, so I ordered a crab fondue bread bowl ($10). It was probably 6" in diameter and contained probably between one and two cups of cheesy, crabby goodness. The "fondue" itself wasn't the molten lava you might expect, but was rather much thicker with finely chopped claw meat. I was bracing myself for something very salty, but this wasn't too bad. My companions ordered Maryland crab soup, calamari, steamed clams and a "grilled combo" ($20) consisting of a small piece of salmon, 3-4 scallops and 3-4 shrimp. I was able to sample these items and, like my "fondue," everything was merely "good." The salmon was heavily seasoned on one end and lightly seasoned on the other. We also had a "flight" of four "dessert shots" (that's what Seasons 52 calls them, anyway) and the portion size is just the right amount of sweetness to round out a meal. Out of the key lime mousse, Reese's Pieces & thick chocolate mousse, s'mores and apple pie (almost literally a small slice of apple pie in a glass), I felt the key lime was the best. Entreés range from the mid-teens ($15 for fish & chips seems a bit excessive) to $33 (lobster tail & petite filet). Wines range from $17-49 by the bottle or $6-11 by the glass. The beer list was similarly reasonable, with most selections priced at $3 or 4. Overall, I had a good experience and the service from John was truly exceptional. However, the food was somewhat overpriced for how square it appeared and tasted. This could be overcome by bumping up presentation, flavor and portion size just a bit. With that said, though, it is definitely heads and shoulders above Scranton's mainstay seafood restaurant, Cooper's, which has existed solely on its reputation and "The Office"-related notoriety for years. As far as other restaurants that are known for seafood, I'd visit Doc's way before I'd step foot into Red Lobster or Sebastianelli's, too. The Yelp reviews for the other two locations (West Chester, PA and Dover, DE) seem to concur with my overall sentiment: Doc's is definitely worth a visit, but don't expect to be wowed.

    (4)
  • Peter M.

Tried Doc's again hoping to have a better experience last night. Ordered the same dish for comparison. Sauce was changed and much better but the scallops were gritty. Friends ordered the shrimp scampi and said it was good but from the looks of it I disagree. The shrimp were overcooked and the sauce was very, very thin. More of a white wine sauce than a scampi. Still a miss for me.

The oysters were good but service was terrible. The bartender wanted to stand around and talk instead of noticing that there was a customer there. He was even told that he had people waiting and he continued to talk. Who ever owns this really needs to get a handle on the concept of service or this place will not last

Excellent and fresh seafood for the Scranton area. Technically a chain restaurant but I don't really consider it as such since there are only 3 other locations and none within 2 hours of here. I usually only go here for lunch since I work nearby and the prices are more reasonable on the lunch menu. They have rotating lunch specials every day and you can get a 4 oz piece of fish plus 2 sides for $9. Not bad considering I've never really had a bad meal here. The swordfish and salmon are excellent. They do also have a few craft beers available. Not many, but a few.

The meal was good. The service was very good in a full restaurant. Although a bit pricey, I felt it was good value. It lived up to the previous reviews.

One of those places that is trying to be fancy - but just not making it. Seared Ahi Tuna was awful. Dry - rubbery. Oysters were ok. Bread was dry. Service - OK. This is the second time I have eaten there - will be the last.

Never again, loud atmosphere and the food was a big disappointment, but if you want to drink beer and eat raw oysters then this is the place.

Drinks are pricey and the oysters, besides also being very expensive, are hit & miss.
