Okay, allow me to preface this review by saying that yes, Jack's can be very smokey. But, if you can get past that, this is, in my humble opinion, one of the best bars in Media. I moved to Media about 6 months ago and have quickly grown to love this little neighborhood place. Let's start with the staff; the bartenders are very friendly and attentive, you never wait long for a drink- major plus in my book. The menu, although quite small, offers something for everyone and the portions are very generous. I have yet to have anything there that hasn't been delicious. The patrons are what gives this place its homey feel for me. On a typical night there is a mix of your middle-aged, blue collar workers and retirees with a sprinkling of in-the-bizzers and twenty somethings, all of whom are friendly. If you are a woman, you can go in solo and not have to worry about getting creeped on, which was probably the biggest initial selling point to me since I do frequently go out alone. I could go on and on about why I love this bar but I would highly recommend checking it out for yourself. (PS, I knocked one star off due to the lack of bar sports- darts, pool, etc- but that seems to be a Media thing)

I have been going to Jacks for over 15 years for cocktails and food. The bartenders (Jack, Lori and Steve) are always attentive, courteous and friendly. If you want conversation, well you have come to the right place. The owner (Jerry) takes pride in the quality of food, service and cleanliness. You can always count on great soups, sandwiches and specials on a daily basis. Great food, drinks, bar crowd, help and sports...sounds pretty good to me!

It is a smoking bar that does not allow anyone under 21, so that makes it priceless just to start. It's a shot and a beer place. The portions of food are generous. The beer and liquor prices good. The staff is like family. The patrons are almost all regulars. The soups are homemade and you can never go wrong with ordering one - but they have some specialty soups like stuffed pepper, chicken pot pie, clams casino and philly cheesesteak that knock your socks off. If you don't want to watch sports on numerous TVs, be bothered with a smoky environment, or are looking to wow a date - don't come here. Please.

An old house converted into a bar, Jack's boasts the stereotypes of your nightmares. Racist old men grabbing a shot and a beer at lunch? Check. Surly waitstaff that hates newcomers? You got it? Sketchy looking chef that throws the food around? What could be better? The thing is, that's what gives Jack's its charm - it's dirty, gritty, smoke infused charm. Look, if you don't enjoy an establishment that caters to locals, offers a beer selection that begins and ends with Bud, serves mediocre bar food and calls flickering florescent bulbs "mood lighting," this is not the place for you. In fact, I'd say never bring a date there for a nightcap. But if you want a great hole-in-the-wall hang to watch the game (plenty of TVs, all the big sport packages), with characters galore and a cheap no nonsense beer selection, than step into Jack's. Just don't make night time the first time.
