Went back here the other night on account of a friend really wanting to go here. Service has improved and BYOB never hurt anybody. Unfortunately, rolls still suffer from the same issues. Way too much rice and some of them fall apart as you try to pick them up. My friend even commented on it. As this always happens here, I was expecting my rolls to fall apart. To be fair, there were two gentleman making the rolls and a few of our rolls stayed together, so that is a big improvement. Now, if both guys get on the same page, I might even suggest others to try this place out. The amount of fish in our rolls was quite generous/fresh which led me to increase the stars from 2 to 3 for Sapporo East. When I visit PA, if a friend would ask me to go here, then I would be willing to give it another chance. The location of the establishment is just too convenient and I really want to like the place. Pack your rolls tighter guys! And the rolls don't need that much rice...it's just excessive...we are here for the fish after all.

I did not have sushi so this review is not base on sushi This place is ok, I wouldn't come back, unless there's nothing else I want to eat, I walked in sat down, and a non-asian waiter took my order, I ordered the seafood Udon, he said "you know that's noodle in soup right?" I said Yes, of course, last time I checked, I look Asian, all Asian know what Udon is.....or I would think. The Udon was bland, but the seafood on top was good portion, scallops, salmon, and shrimp were big....needed more bonito flakes....

After having tried Sapporo East 3 or so times, I can safely rate this place a high 3 stars. As a mostly sashimi eater, the raw fish has always been top notch, with regular offerings of Sea Urchin and White tuna, which can be harder to come by. For those who prefer their sushi rolled, deep fried and loaded with cream cheese, you may find the menu a little lacking in variety, and many of the specialty rolls contain ONLY cooked fish. The rice itself is very disappointing, with very little vinegar and seasoning, falling easily apart. Additionally, when I sampled the Volcano roll, there was a sweet sauce that had the most unpleasant off flavor. Hibachi dishes were off, but the teriyaki choices are decent. Miso soup, house and seaweed salad all consistently yummy. I definitely think they lack in the cooked food arena. Service is fast and efficient, albeit a little confusing as usually three different people attend you. BYO has saved us so much money when dining there; definitely worth remembering! UPDATE: Last few times I've visited Sapporo, the fish has been disappointing. For this area it's still a good option, but really, I'd rather go to Wegman's to get my raw fish fix.

I live in New York City, and I have eaten at a hell of a lot of sushi places. I must say, this is on my short list of favorite sushi restaurants. The place is clean, the same staff have been here for years, and the prices are VERY competitive. The best deal is the sushi boat for two. Best of all: this restaurant is BYOB! My only complaint is that the wait for a table seems to be a little excessive, and the seating process a bit disorganized, but I always make it a point to eat here when I'm in the area.

What can I say about "Sapporo East" other then it is one of the best places to find Sushi in the area. Weather you are a traditional fan or like the more Americanized favors this place has it all. They are not open on Mondays. I am told this is the day they go down to the market in Baltimore, MD to get their fish for the week. Weather this is true I have never asked. If you are a sushi fan this is a must try. For the non-sushi lovers they do also have a lot of other Japanese dishes that are well worth the trip out. Another note, you can not make reservations at Sapporo, and the dinning room is a bit small, about 15 tables (they did recently start a small expansion), so if you are going to have a large party I recommend getting there a bit early so you can get a table. And make sure to say hello to Henry and Mark (the men behind the counter, normally) and ENJOY, I always do.

I've have probably been to sapporo around 100 times and I must say this is by far the best sushi I have ever tasted. sure the presentation isn't the best and the rolls far apart sometimes but the fish is always fresh and is the best i have ever had. I've eaten sushi in many different parts of the world and sapporo kicks ass.

If you can wait for a while and deal with slow, disorganized, inefficient service, then the sushi is well worth the wait. I've never had anything less than terrific food in the 20+ times I've eaten here. I've had great service 4-5 times, when I've been the only party in the place, or close to it. I just left this evening- sushi was great as usual, had 5 different people wait on us, waited 30 min for our food after we ordered, one of the girls took our coupon and disappeared for another 15 min. My boyfriend had to go hunt someone down to get our check so we could finally leave. It was an hour and a half total experience for 2 sushi rolls and 2 Pepsis- they don't know which end is up some days. They're always friendly and sweet, which makes me wonder if they even know how slow and inefficient they are. However, the sushi is always great. Falls apart easily sometimes, but the flavors are phenomenal. Highly recommend the house special roll and the volcano roll. If you have time to wait for slow but friendly service, the sushi is great.

I'm really glad I gave Sapporo East a second chance. I came here a couple years back and wasn't impressed, the sushi was over priced for what I got. A friend asked me to meet her here a month or so ago, and I was very happy with my experience.... so much that I've been back several times since :) I like going here before the lunch and dinner rush, its a bit small inside so its nice to be one of the only ones in the place. Also when its not too busy they have brought me a small plate compliments of the chef a couple times. The rolls here are very flavorful, fresh, and big. The sauces that accompany are great. They have almost the same exact sushi menu as "Miso"- which is my favorite sushi place on the east shore. The most memorable rolls I can think of from Sapporo are - Special House, Angel Hair, Orange Flamingo, Special Volcano....(pretty much all of the house or specialty rolls I've tried have been amazing) My only complaint is that I've noticed when they get busy, the rolls aren't rolled tight enough(?) and have a tendency to fall apart before they get to my mouth. I've had great service here, very friendly and prompt. I'm def. glad I came back to Sapporo. In my opinion this is the best sushi on the west shore... Just don't show up on a Monday, because they are closed :( Happy Eating !

Best sushi in town. Hands down. They have very creative rolls, and their salmon and tuna is some of the best I've had. I've eaten dinner, lunch and take out, and it's all been great. The lunch specials are a fantastic deal though... soup, salad, and a couple of rolls for under $10. I love the Tokyo Roll and the spicy tuna roll. Their 'hot' bowl is loaded with sashimi and rice. Very good every time I've been there.

Seems like this is the rage for locals. It's ok, but have had way better. Surprised by the size of the place, small.

Just started business traveling to this area and tried this place out for the first time. I tried 2 rolls. Spicy tuna and lobster avocado. Good sized rolls...so quantity was fine. The tuna roll was odd for me. A staple when I get sushi and was not satisfied with this roll at all. Not spicy at all and it had seaweed wrapped inside in a rolled fashion....not on the outside of the roll..on the inside. This wrapped fashion made it difficult for me to swallow..kind of felt like a stringy vegetable if you know what I mean. I almost choked a couple of times. The lobster roll was better...had a nice sauce with it and was enjoyable...but not fantastic. The good: Service fast Friendly Nice atmosphere That other odd thing for me was that the sushi chef asked if everything was ok about 4 times. Usually I would take that as a positive..but it started to feel odd like he was expecting me to say it wasn't good. I was alone at the sushi bar and embedded in my iPad in between bites...so I was confused on the attention. But this could just be me. I have not tried any other places here for sushi...but I hope there are better choices that I find.

A friend and I were craving sushi so we came here for lunch today. I have been here a couple times for dinner and they have never disappointed me. They also have a sister location called Miso on 22 in Harrisburg which is equally as good. Their lot isn't that big. Dinner time can be difficult to get a parking space but for a Monday lunch, I had no problem getting one. They had a great lunch menu to choose from but my friend and I opted for their specialty rolls and shared. The rolls are HUGE and they definitely don't skimp on the fish. We ordered about 4 rolls, an appetizer, and a seaweed salad. My favorite roll that we ordered was the Pink Flamingo and my friend also agreed. We ordered the TNT roll but it didn't have much heat to it (just asked for some sriracha sauce) and the tempera was a little hard ( probably just fried a little too long). But I do have to say, I had to take two bites because it was so BIG! Between the two of us, we barely just finished it all and was completely satisfied. The servers were extremely nice and attentive. They came around a few times to make sure our water was filled. Sapporo is a BYOB, so bring a bottle of your liking, they are more than happy to put it on ice for you.

Consistently good. Not great, but good sushi. The shrimp tempura appetizer however is excellent. We typically sit at the bar and don't have a wait so no issues for me there. I will say however it could do with a nice deep clean soon. Dried rice and soy sauce splashes are apparent on the glass front.

I don't know about you, but when I hear "fresh seafood," I don't immediately think "Mechanicsburg, PA." When my friend's family graciously invited me to join them for dinner at a sushi restaurant, I was a bit skeptical. However, Sapporo East did not disappoint. If anything, I left the restaurant pleasantly surprised. For a cold Tuesday night in Central Pennsylvania, the place was BUSY. Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait a couple of minutes for them to be able to accommodate our party of six. Every table was occupied, and the waiters were running around like, umm, prawns with their heads cut off. If you saw this place from the outside, you'd never imagine what kind of hustle and bustle goes on on the inside. On the outside, it looks like an average strip mall restaurant. On the inside, it looks like an average Japanese restaurant, complete with faux bamboo decorations, rice paper and porcelain cats. Hello, Kitty! As a person who does not eat shell fish, I rarely choose to go to a sushi restaurant. When I do, I go for the sashimi or one of the teriyaki plates. Since everyone at my table was raving about the quality of seafood here, I decided to go for the sashimi. I was the last one to order in our party of six. I listened to everyone order sushi rolls and other things I could never, ever eat. Seaweed makes me nauseous. When it was my turn to order, I asked the waitress what I was going to see on my sashimi combination plate ($20.95). She glanced at the specials behind the sushi bar and read off the fresh fish menu: "tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, salmon and mackerel." Perfect! I love all of those. I also ordered a side order of edamame. The whole table waited . . . and waited . . . and waited some more, as I finished my edamame, my miso soup and my salad. A couple of us asked for a refill on water, but we weren't successful the first couple of times. The restaurant seemed understaffed, and the staff - overworked. The edamame, however, was generously sprinkled with coarse salt - not a bad thing, just different from what I was used to. I think they might have been a tad too aggressive with the salt. Then, it was my turn to wait. Everyone had already tasted their sushi rolls, as well as their neighbor's, when my combination plate finally arrived. It was beautifully presented on a bed of shredded daikon atop a wooden board. There were my five types of fish and, oh WHAT IS THAT? Apparently, my combination included 3 slices of octopus and two tiny pieces of crab leg. I am sure some of you might see it as an unexpected boon, whereas I was not amused. For an OCD person who hates shellfish, it was a rather unpleasant surprise. After my friend graciously offered to use her chopsticks to remove the octopus and the crab legs from my plate, I was able to enjoy my sashimi. I received 3-4 thick pieces of each of the 5 kinds of fish. The fish was as fresh, if not fresher, as you'd find in an expensive sushi restaurant in a more traditional sushi town. Sapporo East's websites claims that their fish is delivered daily from the Baltimore Fish Market. I don't doubt that for a second. My sashimi was absolutely delicious, and the combo plate was big enough even for a big guy like me. I think the food here deserves at least 4.5 stars, but the service hurt the rating just a bit. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Great Japanese restaurant in an unlikely place!

We go to this place for sushi a good bit now and have so far been really pleased with it. The portions at this place are extremely generous, sometimes at the point of being almost TOO much. You can order two rolls and be full, so if you go in intending to try a bunch of different things, you might be out of luck. The regular sushi pieces are HUGE and a great amount for the price. The fish always tastes fresh and the sauces are spot on. They seem to have a great variety with the rolls they offer, so if you're a big sushi fan, you can find something, but if you're a first timer, you can start off easy. The one complaint that I have about the rolls (that I also see a lot of other people mention) is that sometimes they are not packed as tightly as they need to be. You pick up a piece and it will just instantly fall apart. They make them so big that when they fall apart, you're left with a ton of stuff all over the plate that you have to pick through. This doesn't happen with EVERY roll, but it definitely seems to be a pretty consistant problem. The restaurant itself is pretty small. Parking is very limited; try to get there either before or after the meal rushes because otherwise you might be out of luck finding a parking spot. The inside is small, but I don't think it seems like you're crowded. Somehow they do a nice job creating a cozy atmosphere with their limited space. The service is usually pretty quick. I saw that other people said in their reviews that it was really slow, but we have NEVER had this issue. Maybe they just went during the prime rush hour, in which case that would happen at any restaurant. The service for us has always been really friendly and accommodating. The prices are definitely extremely reasonable too, especially considering the portion sizes. Some dishes I would really recommend would be: Seared Tuna Special Appetizer- This is AMAZING. Its a weird combination of things, but its really creative and tasty. Its probably one of the most unique sushi appetizers I've seen. Orange Flamingo Roll- Its a nice roll with great sauce, but the construction can be a little iffy, as with a lot of their other rolls. Sushi- Their sushi pieces are PERFECT. You won't find pieces of fish this large at this price anywhere else. They were really fresh. The yellowtail is awesome, which to me is a usually boring choice, but something about it here is wonderful.

Best Sushi in the Area! Love that it is BYOB! It's usually always busy so it is hard to get a table. Sitting at the Bar works for me. Never have been disappointed.

  • Laurie H.

I've been here numerous times for lunch, and have never had an issue with bad service or waiting for a table. Servers have always been cordial and speedy with bringing drinks and food. I also haven't had a single roll fall apart....so I can't agree with the previous posters on quality. I love this place and will continue to go on a weekly basis!!

I went there with a group of 25 from Central Pa Sushi. Even though we were a big bunch the sushi was lovely and fresh. The hot bowl was packed with fish I could hardly finish it. The reason for 3 instead of 4 was down to my Alaskan roll fell apart. I am going to give this place another try though soon

I don't see a reason to take any stars away. Authentic, fresh, tasty, speedy, nicely priced rolls...oh, I'll be back.

  • Juan B.

I went there with my wife and it wasn't that bad, but I prefer my sushi to stay together. Everytime I dipped a piece in soy sauce, it fell apart. And I mean EVERY piece. The place could have also been a little bit tidier, but thats just me.

  • Craig H.

Disappointing. The sushi is okay but the chef does not know how to make teryaki which is pretty basic Japanese food.

By far the best and freshest sushi in the area. Their non-sushi fare is average, but at least it gets your non-sushi-eating friends to come along and watch you enjoy yourself :)

  • Katie M.

Enjoy the atmosphere and everyone who works there is so friendly. The rolls are delicious. I love sushi and tried sushi restaurants all over US and this is still one of my favorites. Once in a while, they give you a free sample of a roll. It's also BYOB, so bring a bottle! A great place for date night or night with yr gal-pals.

Good sushi, but not the best I've had. I think their sushi portions are a bit large for a bite, but maybe that's just me. Could use a little more flavor for me. Always good service though.

  • Andi S.

Five star on all counts. Excellent service, lovely ambiance, ample parking and fresh ingredients. I had the edamame, miso soup, Volcano roll, plus some Maki and the soft shell crab tempura style. You know, I *love* soft shell crab, and it's the only way I will eat it. I never eat crab that is outside of the shell and and never eat imitation crab. Anyhow, the quality of their green tea is excellent! Looking forward to eating there again.

This is probably the best sushi I have had in Harrisburg and Lancaster. Sushi rolls were huge and the sashimi was fresh. The place was crowded and the sushi still arrived really fast. The staff was great and very accommodating.

Best sushi on the Harrisburg Area. great lunch specials. prices are good and people are nice. I would suggest asking for them to make you something special if you have a favorite ingredient to two. always impressed with this

Had the sushi boat and hot bowl. Hot bowl is so delicious. Def getting it again. The sushi boat was alright. The assortment of sushi, sashimi and rolls didn't really blow me away. The sushi was good but it also wasn't very fresh. I'm gonna try their special rolls next time. I'm sure they will taste great. Service was also friendly and attentive.

Let's summarize my review by saying I left feeling very full and happy. I loved the atmosphere and vibe right when you walk into the restaurant. It's definitely a neighborhood gem. Henry, the owner came over to greet us and made some recommendations for that evening. My Date ordered a mix of different sushi rolls and each one was amazing. This was the first place I've been to that you had to "brown bag" it...meaning you have to bring your own alcohol. We brought a couple of good bottles of wine and with no corkage fee, I liked it! I look forward to returning.

best sushi on the carlisle pike. Not just sushi, they have hibachi, and tempura too!! Volcano roll is to die for and i highly reccomend giving it a try, house special roll is amazing, and their miso so-so i like to start off my meal with a fresh cucumber salad (topped w/ immatation crab and sesame seeds) and also with a hot bowl of miso soup they have several tvs behind the sushi bar which is great if youd like to keep up with the news while youre out to eat, small place with a really small parking lot, sometimes if it is crowded around dinner you may have to park across the street. spicy tuna roll is chopped tuna, i prefer a chunk of tuna not all chopped like cat food, i simply asked them to leave it in a chunk and they did! very friendly staff, with good service, sometimes multiple waiters will wait on you. clean and neat, all in all... i reccomend sapporo east. Ps; BYOB!!!

There is funky smell in the air but tolerable. They didn't have any raspberry tea so I went with the traditional tea. Lunch comes with miso soup and salad. The miso was a bit watery but great flavor. The lettuce was fresh and came with a delicious ginger dressing. The fried calamari was perfect. The sushi sampler deluxe was a big meal, I couldn't finish it. The fish was moist and fresh, even the garnish was fresh & edible. The staff was very friendly. It was very good. I will be back to try dinner.

I went for the first time on Sunday night. There was some confusion with the servers- one took our drink order and another the food. When the waitress came back with the drinks, she wanted to take the food order too and we had to explain what happened (her English was minimal). Overall the food was very good. We ordered the veggie tempura app and sushi rolls. The fresh crab on the volcano roll was excellent. So far since I've been back in central PA, this the best sushi restaurant I've eaten at.

Best sushi in the area, lunch specials are amazing and you cannot beat the value you get. Quality of food is superior to others nearby and better than any of the other notables in the area. Service is always good.

  • Gab S.

This sushi place is phenomenal. I always order house special roll which is a California roll with salmon and creamy spicy sauce broiled on top. I also recommend their jungle roll and angel haired roll. It's absolutely yummmy fantastic. If you are a fan of cooked rolls the house special and jungle roll are the way to go. I promise you will not be disappointed. The staff there is super nice.. And always ready to take your order even if they are not your server. Great customer service, great sushi, great prices. Can't beat that!!

I ordered a veggie roll off of the menu and asked for a sweet potato roll, which was not on the menu and they did not hesitate to accommodate my request. The restaurant was very busy, I sat alone at the sushi bar and watched the 2 sushi chefs and the guy other reviewers mention is the owner, Henry, put together fabulous works of art for all of the diners. I only give it 4 stars though, because I am not sure which server was mine, 3 different ones took my order, brought my drink, and brought my bill, and even though they were not rude and my water got refilled soon after I emptied it, they weren't really attentive of me either. Overall, excellent food and atmosphere, this will be my go-to place for sushi.

I will admit, I am Judgy-McJudgerson when it comes to sushi. It's NOT like pizza where even when it's bad, it's good. When it's bad, it is just bad. Being that I have lived in most major cities and on islands, I like to consider myself a bit versed in good vs. bad sushi. Believe it or not, some of the best sushi I have ever had was in the middle of Montana, so I know to be open minded. And for Harrisburg, PA, this was pretty darn good. My dining partner enjoyed his more than I did mine, but over all it was fresh and enjoyable and reasonably priced. I would have given 4 stars had the server not dropped off by the end of the meal. It took us almost 25 minutes to get and pay our bill. Not sure what happened there, but I almost felt I needed a flashing neon sign to get her attention again to finish off our meal.

This was our second time here. The food is excellent! Best sushi in the area however the miso soup is terrible but the tempura is good too. We had not been here on a Friday night. It was very busy and four different people asked us to order, four people checked in every 5 minutes, four people filled glasses, cleared dishes while you were eating, and hurried you along for the check. I understand they want to turn the table over but it was ridiculous. Every minute one of the two hosts would pop there head around the corner and stare at you to see if your leaving. I stopped making eye contact and when I did they would walk right up to your table as if they were looking to clear something else. We will never go here again on a weekend because we like to enjoy dinner without being pushed out the door.

I used to love this place, but the fact is there's better sushi in the area. It's BYO, which is cool, but the rolls just don't really impress me and they're very sauce heavy. Also their tamago comes out of a package and I found this horrifying.

We had already found a great Japanese restaurant upon recently moving to the area, but a coworker of my husband's recommended this as his favorite so we decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, I wish we had not ventured into this establishment. My husband's sushi was "meh" per his description. The miso soup tasted distinctly of plastic. My hibachi had so much pepper on it, it was inedible and they did not have the usual yum yum sauce as a condiment option to try to help wash it down. I ate a few bites and gave up. The service was almost nonexistent. No one ever asked how our meal was or if we needed anything. We had a hard time getting a refill and the dining room was freezing cold. We left and I ended up having to purchase a separate meal elsewhere. Needless to say we won't be returning, especially when our experience elsewhere was so outstanding.

  • Ursula K.

Staff is super friendly. Service was quick and perfect because we brought our baby (in the carrier) with us. Sushi is yummmy and filling. My husband is not a sushi fan like I am but he likes this place b/c there's other options to eat.

Atmosphere: 4 Service: 5 Flavors: 4 Value: 4 Extras: great parking, easy access, diverse menu We tried the salad, yaki udon (4), spicy california roll (5), spicy tuna roll (5) and rainbow roll(3). All were very well done. Hot tea was nice as well. Will definitely be back.

Best Sushi in Central PA. I have taken out of towners from larger cities (Philly, SF, etc.) and they have also raved about this place. And no, those folks were not sushi novices. Good, fresh sushi is the name of the game here. My wife loves this place a lot more than me.

  • Matt N.

I checked out the menu and picked out 5 rolls for me and some friends to share. They were tasty and well made. I picked them up at the appointed time and had no issue with the order. I especially liked the angel hair roll. I would recommend them since I have eaten in before here, but the takeout was very tasty and affordable.

Great sushi! I think the same people own Miso on the east shore. The menus are similar. Sapporo East has a great ambiance. I am not a fan of raw fish, but the cooked sushi is fabulous. I really enjoy the House California Roll (California Roll with baked salmon and spicy sauce), Angel Hair roll, Volcano roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll. I really enjoy the spicy sauce on some of the rolls. The restaurant is small, you don't have just one server, and the parking lot is tiny. Prices are similar compared to other sushi places. Sapporo East and Miso are the best sushi places in the Harrisburg area!

Henry and crew rock dinner service every time my family have the pleasure of sitting down at this, our favorite sushi bar. Pleasant smiles from the staff and quick drink service. Item menus are on the pricey side but hey who wants to take a chance on cheap sushi. Best Rolls : Eel/Avocado , Volcano Roll Special. Sapporo is BYOB so bring your Saki and toast the night away.

Fresh sushi, relatively good pricing, and great wait staff. If you're going there for dinner try to get there around six or so. They tend to get packed, fast. Oh, it's BYO but they provide opening utensils.

Henry and the gang are tops! My husband and I have been eating there for quite a while. My sister and her husband even declared it the best they ever had and they eat it in the DC area all the time where sushi spots seem to have sprouted up in every neighborhood. Yes, they are a tad more expensive than other sushi establishments in the area. BUT it is darn tootin' worth it. The other sushi places slice the fish too thin (sometimes paper thin), serve it uncomfortably warm and slimy, (you sushi addicts know what I'm talking about), and often slice the roll and slap it on a tray (with a blob of wasabi and a few shreds of pickled ginger). Sapporo East give you generous portions, the fish is still cool when it arrives at your table, and it is ALWAYS artfully arranged even if you only order a single roll. Their fish is amazingly fresh. At Sapporo East, I have never bitten into a "fishy" smelling or tasting piece of Sashimi - which is the most horrendous experience and one that I've had at just about every other sushi parlor in central PA. When I arrived to meet a work colleage for lunch one day, I waited outside and was able to watch a chef butcher a gigantic tuna fish behind a fence on the side of the building. It doesn't get any fresher than that. Their white tuna is like eating butter - I've never found it better in any part of the country. My sister and her husband are devotees. Their signature rolls are very good - but I do wish they'd post some new creations on the white board over the sushi bar - they seem to be the same every time we go there. The last time I was there, they still had two menus. One is a multi-fold menu. The other is a two-sided menu that features some neat custom rolls. If you want a great dining experience, order from the small menu. They have one dish that has only two pieces and includes salmon roe on top and salmon wrapped around rice. Expensive? Yes. Decadent? Yes. Worth every bite? Yes. Willing to embarrass my husband as I pick up every little piece of roe off of the serving tray? Yup-a-roonies! I have a huge preference for raw sushi and sashimi. However, this is the one place where I also like their cooked rolls. Their fried items are never heavy or greasy. I've tried almost every sushi place in central PA. Sometimes I'm in another part of town, sometimes a friend wants to try something different, sometimes I want to see what the new places have to offer. Every time I wish I had eaten as Sapporo East instead. It's that good. The only drawback for those who want a flashy floor show: they don't have hibachi stations where chefs toss around little bits of premasicated meat and create flaming onion volcanos.

Sapporo's sushi is not bad, but I have found the mechanics of the creation of the roll to be hit or miss. I prefer tight and well formed rolls, and that sometimes is not the case. Their seafood Udon is great, I give it a 4 out 5 stars. Location and ambiance is mediocre. Location is small, and I have not been onsite recently, but there is a filthy fish tank as you enter that has an underlying odor that is disturbing. I have been told that has been somewhat rectified, but I would need to see that for myself. Service is decent, although 'unusual' requests may result in something other than you envisioned, and sometimes something delightful, sometimes not. Take out is an option, and is merely okay.

The sushi isn't bad, however it is made haphazardly. When a roll arrives at the table, it should stay a roll all the way from the chefs hands, to my mouth. 75% of the time, this is not the case. They are a bit pricey and for what I am paying for they should not be falling apart the way they do. Whenever I go to a sushi restaurant I always order 2 rolls and then ask the chef to make me something of his choice, it really says alot about the chef and it is supposed to be considered an honor to give anyone free reign of your next item. However the times I've done that I was met with more confusion than anything else. It's not rocket science. I'll go here, but only as a second to last resort.

Our waiter sucked n we were rushed. Sushi was ok, but kept falling apart. Prices were fair. Miso was horrible and what sushi place doesn't have green tea Mochi for dessert??? Overall, not impressed.

Tried the regular sushi combo and I was very pleased with the quality and presentation. My platter came with a number of rolls and quite a few varieties of fish, including squid which was excellent. The restaurant is nice inside and the service was great. I also tried a few pieces of the teriyaki chicken which was good. I was definitely surprised at how quickly the food was prepared, the turnaround time is crazy! Overall great experience, but like Dan mentioned in his review, the prices are steeper here than other local sushi joints.

This place seems to be a popular dining area for the folks at the naval base nearby. I suppose for a small town like Mechanicsburg, the quality is good enough there, but if you come from DC area or NYC, then you will be disappointed. They can get quite pack during dinner hours. All of their dishes started with Salad and Miso Soup. From the look of it, the salad was like veggie with baby vomit on top, but it actually tasted decent. The soup was quite skimpy though, did not have any tofu inside, just water and miso paste. First time I had their Sushi & Sashimi Combination, it was just ok. The fish was not very fresh even though it is a costal state, and it could be small town not able to afford to get fresh ones? The cooked dishes were just ok as well, since the tonkatsu I got one time was quite dried due to overcooked. I can see why the locals love Sapporo East, since they are probably one of few in town, and price was fair. The staffs were actually Chinese, and service was just ok. As a sushi lover, I would just rank them average at best.

Great local sushi and Japanese food place. Friendly service, big menu and nice decor. The side salad is fantastic with a house made ginger dressing. The rolls are delicious and huge. Quality is very good for the reasonable price points. Our new place for our weekly sushi fix.

Good food. However, the service disappoints. Missed orders and delays forced me to give it 2 stars.

We were glad to find this and make it a regular stop when we are in the area. The sushi and sashimi are excellent.

We found this hibachi place to be a little better than Benihana on Paxton. The quality and service was an improvment, and the chef was also very entertaining and sometimes a bit weird. Overall a good experience. The sushi was also an improvement. I liked the setup up of Benihana better but this was an overall nicer experience. Still not cheap as Hiachi usually isn't, but a better value than Benihana.

Could be the best Sushi in the Central PA area, I won't argue against it, but I won't stick up 100% either. Never had a bad meal. Fish as always been really fresh, and service has been great

If you think this is 4-5 star sushi, you need to get out more. Sapporo might be the best option for Japanese in this area, but it still falls short of what a good sushi restaurant SHOULD be. The food filled us up, at a reasonable price, but this place leaves much to be desired. First of all, on a Sunday night, they were OUT of TUNA. What Japanese joint runs out of tuna?!?! I get it, it's in landlocked PA, but still people! PLAN! The sushi rolls were not rolled tightly enough and a few pieces fell apart upon being picked up. The shrimp tempura appetizer - which came out after our entrees - tasted like a whole lot of batter and very little else. We also ordered green tea, and were disappointed that it 1) was in a tea bag, not loose leaf and 2) was served in big mugs, not traditional service with a tea pot and small cups.

Very good food! We had seafood soup, seafood stir fried rice, some sushi and a salad with ginger dressing. Everything was really good. The prices were decent.

I've been coming here for the last ten years and have yet to get tired of my usual sushi sashimi combination. The owners understand freshness, the quality of the food is on par if not better than that of which you'll find in larger cities, and the staff is excellent.

After living in Japan for several years, any sushi in the states will fall short in my eyes. That being said, of all the area sushi places- this place rocks! The owner, Henry, is very courteous. The entire staff is always pleasant and they smile :). They always ask how things are. The sushi quality is great compared to the area. They have a wide selection and will make just about anything you have yearning for. My girlfriend and I sometimes will just go there and ask Henry to make us two rolls that aren't on the menu- we haven't been disappointed yet. I would recommend this sushi place to the local and visitor alike. They also offer a military discount!

Great service, fresh sushi and the owner really cares. I love it when restaurants pack your food for you instead of just handing you a box. It's the details that count and show attentiveness and a real passion for service. Sadly even some of the "nicest" steakhouses and restaurants in the area are quick to throw a box at you and walk away, but this place boxes ur leftovers for you and even packs chopsticks so you can eat it later! The attention to detail made them win me over and my taste buds too.

I don't know what happened, but this place seems to have gone downhill. For over a year now the texture of the fish has been off. The best way to describe it is that it lacks the bite that it used to have, to the point that it is sort of slimy. I really wish this was not the case, but I doubt I'll be coming back anytime soon.

I know restaurants can get busy on a Saturday night, especially Sapporo East. We had a larger (10+ people) party, had called ahead for seating, we were assured that a table would be ready at a certain time (they do not take reservations, per se). Everyone in our group brought their own alcohol, wine, beer whatever it was. Once we arrived we waited and waited and waited.... The staff didn't combine any tables to accommodate our group (though they easily could have), after about 45 minutes we even asked to be seated separately. At this point they had seated everyone else who came in after us, about 12 - 15 people. Basically they kept telling us to wait till another large group had left. For the next thirty five minutes they kept telling us "that table will be open soon, they are leaving" despite the fact that there people pouring glasses of wine and chit chatting but not eating any food. My pregnant wife then had a seat at the sushi bar after standing an hour+, and after 2 minutes the waitress came over and said she needed the seat my wife was sitting in. ARE YOU KIDDING ME SAPPORO EAST!? you cant even sit us, now you want my pregnant wife's chair!? Finally having had enough our party left, as we were leaving the waitress kept begging us to wait, saying that the other table would be open soon HAHAHA! In summary I was prepared to wait, but the staff was rude & made no attempt to accommodate our party. EPIC FAIL!

We stopped by Sapporo the other day looking for something get for dinner one Tuesday evening. It was close to 9 PM so we were not sure if we could get a restaurant in this part of the world to seat us. Fortunately for us, Sapporo was not only open, but had a fair number of people dining there at this hour! Service was comparable to any other Asian restaurant - erratic and "Asian" polite a.k.a. polite with a hint of military ordering! Food was good though! We ordered a bunch of sushi, sashimi, and yaki soba! My wife who is not a big fan of sashimi, went on to have seconds! Miso soup was warm at best but we here happy with the dining experience and will definitely be back!

Wish I could give it 3.5 stars. It's one of my favorite spots for sushi in Harrisburg, but that's mostly because I like the atmosphere and the service is great. The menu is more limited than other places I've been, but they usually have a nice selection of specials. I do have one complaint that is consistently an issue every time I go...the rolls are too big and they're not tightly rolled, making consumption difficult. Oh, and if you order hot tea you won't get a teapot and tiny cups, instead you'll get a mug with tea bag.

Sushi is one of those things that needs to be perfect, or you just shouldn't bother. This is the most reliable sushi house around for those that care about quality.
