We recently rented the inappropriately-named Kids Cabin, operated by the Ligonier Country Inn. Beyond disappointing: when we walked in the cabin, there was a open pop bottle on the coffee table in the main room, ironically left by the cleaning people. It only got worse- much worse- from there. There were two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with a bunk bed. The room with the bunk bed was so small that the ladder to get to the upper bunk was inaccessible, and therefore it made for a precarious climb up or down for our little ones. Our 4- and 5-year old ended up sleeping together in the bottom bunk because it wasn't safe for either of them to use the upper bunk. But wait... Before going to bed, I walked through the house and checked all of the doors and windows to make sure everything was locked up for the night. The first window I checked as a broken lock- it wouldn't even engage. There was a piece of wood that was cut to size so that it could be wedged into the window to keep it from opening. Too bad the upper portion could easily be pulled down, and therefore it offered no protection. The second window I checked was in similar condition- at least the lock was ALMOST screwed down (see the picture I posted). And to top it all off, there was black mold growing on the ceiling of the bathroom. After staying up pretty much all night because we were afraid someone was going to take our children (did I mention that we listened to the neighbors shooting guns? No joke.), we were ready to get home. My wife went to check out, and when she tried to talk to someone about a refund the young girl behind the counter said that she couldn't make that call, and suggested that my wfie call the owner. Which she did, two days later. No response until the following Monday (bad stay + 8 days), and Victoria the Office Manager called me back. She wanted to know who we spoke to at the front desk (why?), and offered me a gift certificate (no thanks). She was more apologetic that it was dirty, than the fact that it was clearly unsafe. She said she would have to talk to the owner about any refund, and promised to call me back the next day. After waiting two days, I emailed her asking for a response. She replied the following day and said she spoke to the owner, but that no refund would be given because we had stayed the night. Really? Apparently I was supposed to pull my kids out of bed at 11p on a Saturday for them to find a better room for us. Absolutely no way would I recommend that anyone stay here. Unsafe conditions + unethical business people = bad deal

We stumbled upon the inn because I was in the area antique shopping. We had the Sunday Brunch. It was excellent. First of all, the atmosphere was quiet, comfortable, and best of all, no screaming, squalling, bratty kids that seem to be in every restaurant lately. Now, to the food. We had an omelette made for us at a small omelette station set up back in the bar area. It was very good and fresh. There was another area where waffles were being made with all the fixings to top them with, strawberries, cream, raspberries, butter and syrup. Yum. The bacon was good quality thick cut and the sausage homemade. It wasn't a huge buffet, but enough variety to satisfy. We didn't try any of the lunch items because we were full after the omelette and waffles. We will definitely go back.

Let me start this off by saying that I have never written a review in my life, but this restaurant begs for it. If this is how they conduct their dining room, I can only imagine what their kitchen must be like. I am not a food service expert, but I eat out a lot. We made Mother's Day reservations for 12 for the mothers and daughters in my family, We were actually embarrassed that we took our mothers there to celebrate their day. We went for the brunch and arrived at 1pm. They took us to the banquet hall area, and my first thought is that the setup looked like a bad fire hall wedding. We immediately all noticed was how dirty the food area was. The brunch started the buffet at 11am, and apparently had not tidied up at all since then. The white tablecloths on the buffet tables were complete slopped with food. The "waffle station" right inside the door had 4 waffles stacked up and just sitting on the iron. We were short a chair and a place setting, we had to get both ourselves. We sat for about 5 minutes and no waitress, so we got up and asked if we should help ourselves or wait. The first table was cold salads--except they weren't cold. There was lettuce, 2 salads dressings, coleslaw and broccoli slaw just sitting on the table, not on ice. They were in huge BUCKETS--like the kind you would fill with ice and put drinks in if you were having a picnic. I am not an expert, but I would assume that type of container would not be food-grade. I touched the side to see if they felt cold, and they didn't. Who knows how long they had been sitting there. I passed that and went over to the carving station and omlette table. One person was running both, and about 15 people were backed up around this area. They had a tiny little piece of ham that was mostly fat and scraps and were trying to make it go as far as they could. I heard the carver telling people that it was the best part. I waited about 5 minutes for a piece of roast beef and finally walked away. They had 3 tables of hot chaffing dishes and nothing was marked. Turkey, pork, meatballs in gravy, dry white rice, corn floating in juice, some sort of pasta, scrambled eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage balls (??). The table of breads and desserts that were left were scraps, and what was there, was stale. Cold waffles that were supposed to be made-to-order but were just sitting there. I have had better food at Old Country Buffett. Nothing went together or complimented anything else and everything was horrible quality. Condiments such as whipped cream, butter, and ketchup were sitting in giant wooden lattice bowls that are meant for salad or bread, not liquids. BACTERIA. Plates that people had abandoned on the buffet tables just sitting there. Quite a few things needed replenished, and everything needed cleaned up. When we got back to our seats to eat, almost everything was gross and most of it was cold...then we realized the fire was out under almost every single chaffing dish. The came over with drinks and apologized for taking so long. She gave us one carafe of coffee and one pitcher of water for 12 people and immediately left again. I could see everyone was getting upset, so I quietly got up to speak to the manager. They said she was at the front desk, but talk to the "chef" at the carving station. I calmly pointed out that the mayo-based salads weren't even on ice, the Sterno wasn't lit under the chaffing dishes and everything was so sloppy and dirty that we couldn't believe it. He actually had the nerve to tell me that they weren't required to keep the cold salads on ice because they were going through them so fast that it didn't matter. I told him I knew that wasn't correct food safety-wise, and also wrong because it was an enormous quantity of it. He also told me that they just served 200 people and I "needed to understand" that that was a lot of people and they were trying to get it turned over. I said if you can't handle that many people at once, then they shouldn't accept more reservations than they can handle. He told me he'd refund MY money if I was unhappy (not everyone), but never once apologized. My cousin and I went to Vicky, who we were told was the manager and let her know what was going on. Again, no apology and said that she'd talk to them. When we got back, magically all the salads were on ice, new Sternos were lit under the chafing dishes and they put black cloth napkins over all the slopped up table linens. We asked for our checks and told the new waiter we were not happy. He apologized and handed us our checks and didn't even offer to get us a manager. I handed mine to the carver and told him I wasn't happy, I didn't even eat a plate full of food so I will take him up on his offer. They made the rest of my family pay and wanted them all to come back for a free meal in the future, but obviously nobody wanted that.

I'm surprised with the last reviewer's post, especially about the breakfast, because we stayed here 2 nights and were extremely dissapointed by it. I imagine she may have come in for their weekend brunch rather than normal breakfast for people staying there, which was made up of a tiny buffet of oatmeal packets, box donuts, some fruit, coffee, and juice. I thought this was a B&B and so expected much more, maybe some eggs or sausage or just something hot! We stayed in the Shafer House next door which was very nice and well-decorated (which is why I'm at least giving it 3 stars), and we enjoyed the fireplace and whirlpool tub. Only thing was that there was no internet in there, and we couldn't use the internet in the lobby either because it was closed at night! Maybe we were just there during a very slow time so the whole area was a little bit dead (tip: come to the laurel highlands in the summer or fall, NOT winter, unless you're going to a ski resort). Maybe even the breakfast is better when the area is busier, though I've stayed in other B&Bs where there were few people and they still got a phenomenal breakfast. And of course, if you can't provide a good breakfast, you won't get a good review as a bed and breakfast.

I love this place!!!! The buffet breakfast is outstanding and I'd your wanting more than homemade waffles with raspberries, made to order eggs and omelets, french toast, yummy sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, scones, donuts and homemade homefries then go for brunch at 11:00. It's wonderful !!!!! You can't beat the price and the owners and employees make you feel like your part of the family. Not to mention this place is so cozy, and when it's cold the fireplace will be burning . This is by far the best place for breakfast!
