Superior service and local farm-to-table fare, from the greens to the butter to the meats all exceptionally prepared with love by owner Tim Carr and family. One word: divine.

Way too expensive for what you get. Carr's feels like a very outdated, stuffy restaurant that is still living off better times. The food wasn't bad, but several items are $30+ and almost every appetizer was $10+. Again, food was not bad, but a $28 tag for a average-sized, just ok piece of halibut is crazy.

Delicious food and wonderful service. We started at the bar and had a very well made dirty Martini. I asked to be seated next to my girlfriend when I made my reservation and we were given a nice cozy spot on a Saturday night. I ordered the Eberly organic chicken and it was absolutely delicious and fresh. Can't wait for our next visit!

My fiance and I went to Carr's for lunch after some exploring in downtown Lancaster and were underwhelmed by the experience - both in decor and our food. The location is amazing - right in the heart of the historic center square - but Carr's decor and ambiance does nothing to capture that character and beauty. The white table clothes are outdated and the murals on the wall don't seem to depict anything native to Lancaster. Overall, the interior is bland and uninspired. The lunch menus are a sheet of computer paper folded between cheap laminated covers. Laminated covers just reek of an outdated, cheap diner, which I hardly imagine is Carr's objective. (My advice: skip the plastic sheets and just print out menus on a nice, thick sheet of paper. Looks much better and is probably cheaper!) But you don't go to a restaurant just for aesthetics - it's about the food, which we sadly found overly-saturated in butter and unoriginal. We began with the meatballs with toasted bread, which we did really enjoy. However, the rest of the meal was highly disappointing. My fiance had the quesadilla, which he renamed a "Mexican hamburger battered in butter" because of the amount of butter-saturated meat stuffed into a buttery quesadilla. I had the veggie burger, which was just OK. Pretty bland and completely fell apart if I tried to eat it within the sandwich buns. We did split an order of the fries (I believe were beer-battered). These were OK, but come on, how can you mess up battered fries!? Overall, I'm just not sure what Carr's is going for. It's not fine dining. It's not farm-to-table (nothing really tasted fresh and local). It doesn't have traditional Lancaster dishes on the menu... it's just... bland. Carr's gets two stars: Our service was prompt and we liked the meatballs, so it wasn't a complete waste of money. Areas to improve: aesthetics, restaurant identity and FOOD!

I was in Lancaster on business and we decided on this little spot for dinner. Upon entering you walk down a stairs to the bar that winds around the bottom of the stairs. We were kinda early and were seated right away. Our waitress was knowledgeable as well as cute. The seafood soup was to die for. I had the veal with red cabbage and spetzle. Wonderful. I would suggest a side of mac and cheese to take home for later Great.

Great restaurant close by the Fulton Theatre, downtown Lancaster, PA. Food and staff are very good and nice selection of wine. Recommend for anyone with a family party to go to prior to attending a play at the Fulton.. But make reservations at least a couple days in advance of Fulton show weekend.

After literally hundreds of visits for great dinners, memorable lunches and special late night treats, I can testify that Tim Carr has created and maintains one of the most consistently excellent restaurants in central PA. We have never had anything that wasn't good: try whatever the server recommends. Also great market stand (Cobb salad one of the best in downtown Lancaster) and catering.

We are local folks who consider how our money is spent. When we are deciding on dinner in the city, Carr's is always on the list of options. We have had so many wonderful dinners, special occasions at Carr"s. The menu always has interesting options. From traditional dishes to entrees that are more creative. Something for everyone. Nice wine selection too.

First rate food, first rate atmosphere, first rate service. Pricey, but when you want a special dinner, this is your place. Grilled bacon was gorgeously tender. Lamb trio was a knockout. Small portions, but very well executed. And I'd go back just for the wait staff. The stairs down to the restaurant are a little daunting, but I'd do it again.

We went there last night for dinner. We have been here before and enjoyed our meals. Last evening, however, we were surprised when my wife bit into her fried oysters Rockefeller, and one them was still frozen. First, we were shocked that the oysters were frozen and not fresh for $14 for an appetizer. Secondly, our food came out so quickly, both the appetizers and main dish that we felt very rushed throughout the meal. I ordered the New York strip, one of the evening specials, medium, and although I ate it, and did not complain, it was at best rare. At the end of the meal we realized why we were being rushed, when a group of eight parents and their daughter's from an out of town swim team came in. Carr's restaurant has been around quite a while, and frankly, we were really surprised at the food and service. We go out to dinner every weekend, and several times during the week. We don't mind spending the money, but they really need to take a lesson from restaurants like Checker's, Belvedere Inn, and Gibraltar.
This place was great! You walk downstairs to enter the restaurant with the bar to the left and the dining areas to the right. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table and it was very pleasant - this did not seem like a place where people would get rowdy - civilized folks. I ordered a martini and the most impressive thing was delivered - a glass just full enough that I did not spill and the remainder of my drink served in a tiny carafe on ice so it did not sit getting diluted by melt-off in a shaker. SO thoughtful and cute - this typifies my overall experience here. We sat at a long table in the backroom, which features a glass wall and view to the wine cellar - it was very charming. I think I would request seating in this room because of the subterranean cozy feel - the other room had a cheesy mural on the wall of peasants eating. We had the rarebit to start and it was delightful mix of melted strong cheese and bacon served with Auntie Ann's pretzel bits (Lancaster is the HQ of Auntie Ann). Only complaint - we needed more pretzels to soak up the goodness, sadly not available. Everything we ordered was good (some great) with the crab cake and steak being a standout. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. Overall - I really enjoyed it.

The husbands chose Carrs for mutual anniversary dinner. We called for a reservation for 4 and had to take 8 pm on a Saturday night. We arrived at 8 that night to a mostly empty place, only about 5-6 tables occupied. Very irritating. Service was good except for the female server totally without personality until she handed us the check, where she finally cracked her one and only smile. Food was good: crab cake and meatloaf dinners, Caesar salad and green salad with crab cakes. Beers were cold, merlot was fine. $130 before tip. Overall, it was okay.

Interesting take on local/Lancaster county cuisine. Some items were really good and some just OK... bar-lady (forgotten her name - I had too many cocktails!) was fabulous... made some really interesting cocktails and I enjoyed all of them :-) Would most likely return and it's definitely worth a visit if you are in town and looking for something a little different...

So glad we took the recommendation of a local and went to Carr's! We had the Curried Vegetables and Ravioli, both of which were delicious! The Curried Vegetables were full of savory flavors and the vegetables were well roasted, but still tender (not mushy). Also recommend the lemon tart. Our server was very attentive. Would definitely go back again.

My husband brought me here for my birthday, it was our first time dining at Carr's. The atmosphere was great. It was quiet and peaceful and our table was ready right when we arrived (we made a reservation). Our server was very nice and didn't rush us through anything. Actually, I felt encouraged to take as much time as I wanted to enjoy my wine and appetizer, then order my meal. I had a crab cake which was great with mashed potatoes that weren't great, but not the worst I've had. The presentation was very nice. My husband had a chicken special that he loved. We shared a dessert that was mini, or like a sampling of different things and they were delicious and not expensive at all! The tables we were at was a little close to the one next to us, we could hear every word they said, and I'm sure they could hear us as well. Other than that it was a very enjoyable experience with great food.

Went here with a church small group. Nine of us had a nice table right next to the big window of the wine cellar. Everyone enjoyed their food, with the salmon being the biggest hit. I had the crab cake and it was delicious. But I was a tad disappointed. Everyone I know refers to crab cakes in the plural so I just assumed there would be two of them. But no, there was just one lonely forlorn looking crab cake. He needed a companion. I also ordered the asparagus bisque to surprise my lovely wife cuz I've been in the doghouse lately. She loved it ...so I think I got one paw out of that doghouse now. My biggest complaint is how freakin long it took to get drinks, to get food...to get the bill. Server was very professional and friendly and some preppy looking kid filled up my water a lot. But everything took forever. I know it's leisurely dining but this was dining at glacier pace. Since we prayed before we ate, i didn't complain, just whined later. And another thing they need a feng shui dude to change the door situation by the men's room. You come out of that men's room ya better look out, cuz you could get whacked by the darn door that opens to the hallway to the men's room. A little pricey for serving size, but a real nice setting with delicious food, just pick up the pace baby...

I went here with my fiancee and my future in-laws for brunch before going to The Fulton for a show. I had the shrimp with cheesy grits which were good but not great. The shrimps and grits were supposed to be spiced with a chili rub but instead of being spicy they were sweet. The grits were good but a bit one note. Everyone else ordered the stuffed french toast which was good but the ratio of brioche to baked apples was too large.

Dined here before going to the Fulton for a show. Although my steak was a little rare for my taste, it was very good. I ordered the steak and cake and the crab cake was large and delicious. The server was friendly and attentive and the restaurant offered us a very nice ambiance. The others in my party said their filets were perfect and some of the best steak they've ever had. Dessert was also delicious and our kind waiter topped the plate off with a birthday candle =)

Had the flank steak for $26.00- cooked properly but had an " old flavor" to the meat... Should have had more juices if it was "fresher" Definitely some G.I. Disturbance this morning Caesar salad was a bit bland Green beans no seasoning Potatoes were tasty Crab soup was good Dinner rolls stale Beer selection had nice selections Salad lettuces in others salad were dirty and wilted All other three dinners seemed to be ok.... But For $80 a couple with 2 beers per couple... I would have expected more. Silverware by course was not replaced... Friend had steak knife and butter knife to eat main course no salt and pepper on table- that really bothers me... especially when the food needs seasoned at table. Hostess spend better part of 45 minutes talking to patron at bar... Probably could helped refill waters, clear etc. No front of house management present We go back from time to time but not as frequently as we could given the cost to experience ratio being on the lower end of the scale

Go for dessert. Try the Wilbur Chocolate creme brulee, it's amazing! Upstairs at the crush wine bar, is a small spot for friends. Good wine, little pricey, but overall great spot!
We were fortunate to find this place while checking out the Central Market in Lancaster, and boy am I glad we decided to head down into this charming basement. I am a huge meatloaf fan (the food, not the artist), theirs was described on the menu as a town favorite - and I can see why....it was tender, savory, just perfect. I also tried their tomato and crab bisque, mmmm delish. Even their fries were awesome. We had a party of 8, and all but 1 of us were impressed - the one exception was due to a slightly overcooked/dry salmon dish, had it not been for that, I'd give them 5 stars....really, I think they deserve more like a 4.5. Very nice ambiance, the service was great, very creative/diverse menu, reasonable prices - a must try whether you're a local or just cruzin thru town.

The hostess told us that she had no room for our two families with 5 children when clearly there was an entire section of the restaurant with several tables that could be pushed together. So, she refused to serve us, including an 8 months pregnant lady who had to walk in the rain to find another place to eat. Very inconsiderate, unfeeling. Definitely not family friendly, definitely not group of 10 friendly. They might strive to be more upscale but I cannot support an establishment that so obviously lacks in humanism.

Really nice experience. Food was fresh and cooked perfectly, even the seafood. Everything was very tasty. Great beer and wine selections. We ate at the bar and our bartender was really helpful and made us feel welcome. I will return. It was expensive but worth it. And if you're looking for cheaper options they do offer a bar menu.

For some unknown reason I always forget this place. Luckily, I remembered it last weekend. Everything was wonderful: drinks (great wine selections and well-made drinks) service, but most-importantly the food. And, the prices are reasonable. A similar meal at Fenz or the Belvedere would be about $2-3 more for each item. There were about nine things on the menu that looked fantastic, but we hesitantly decided on the lamb burger special and homemade ravioli. Both we excellent. Cannot wait to return to work our way through the menu.

I went here for a quick lunch with my family after having spent the morning at Central Market. We were quickly seated, however the wait staff took their time to get us a high chair, despite having reminded them twice.I would probably overlook this,as they were very apologetic soon after. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich with a crab bisque, my father ordered a grilled tuna sandwich- which was out of this world,it had capers and red onion. My mother had a turkey club with chicken soup and my husband ordered the open faced meatloaf sandwich. All of us agreed that the meat loaf sandwich was the best,it was moist and flavorful and served on top of toasted bread and mushrooms and came with a side of fries. My parents and I shared dessert, which was croissant bread pudding with creme anglaise. The bread pudding was moist and the creme anglaise complemented it very well.It was a generous portion and perfect for sharing. I will definitely be going back here and would highly recommend the meatloaf sandwich.

Can't knock Carr's. They serve fresh, delicious cuisine that is expertly prepared and served. Hidden in a basement across from Central Market, Carr's greets its customers with humility. The lunch menu favors lighter fare with a focus on freshness and flavor, while the dinner menu leans toward upscale comfort foods with a few steak choices. The starters and main course often leave me happy, but still hungry, so this is one of the few places where I indulge in dessert. The ambiance is soothing, and louder parties can be jarring. I'd like to see more subdued lighting to better complement the noise level and decor. Overall experience is great, time and again, and this is one of my favorite dining spots in Lancaster.

A diner that wants to be fine dining. My husband, three teenage children, and I had lunch at Carr's today, and I was a bit disappointed by how old fashioned this restaurant is. The decor is so dated--lose the tablecloths, laminated menu, water goblets, and art. It's cool to have retro meatloaf, but the sandwiches with our two soup and sandwich combos (ham/Swiss and tuna) were Plane Jane. My mom makes me that exact tuna sandwich! My husband liked his salmon, but the citrus butter sauce was a throwback. Two different soups were okay, but not inventive or delicious. I tend to judge a restaurant by their soup, and that fact that neither was particularly inspiring bummed me out. The stars of the meal were an Elderflower martini made with Hendricks' gin and the milk chocolate creme brûlée. Both items were much more sophisticated than the rest of food we ordered. On the strength of these two items, I would give Carr's a second chance if I was in the area.

Carr's Restaurant has to be one of the best eateries in Lancaster County -- I absolutely LOVED our experience here! We were promptly seated, and our waitress quickly came to our table to get drink orders and go over the menu with us. And I'll say right off the bat, she was one of the best waitresses I have ever had at any restaurant in any country I've been to. EXTREMELY helpful, knowledgable, attentive, and ready to please. The ambience is also great, and suits casual, lunch/weeknight dining as well as more dressy attire on the weekends. The food? Excellent! I ordered the Gulf Shrimp with Lobster Macaroni & Cheese ("sauteed gulf shrimp surrounding our blend of macaroni & cheese flavored with Dijon mustard, tarragon, and Maine lobster chunks") and it was heavenly. Everything was cooked to perfection. The Caesar salad was also a knock out the park. Another guest ordered the Eberly Organic Chicken ("organic, free-range Lancaster County chicken breast, leg, and thigh with seasonal vegetables & mashed potatoes"), and it was some of the best restaurant-prepared chicken we've ever eaten. Seasoned perfectly, cooked to perfection, and presented beautifully. The third guest had the Chicken Pot Pie ("Lancaster county's eberly organic, free range chicken, slow roasted & served in a rich saffron broth with house-made 'pot pie' squares, baby vegetables and fresh parsley"), and it was the only dish that didn't really stand-out. Part of the "problem" was that the "pot pie" was actually more like soup -- they aren't kidding when they say it's served in a broth. None of us were blown away by the flavor, either, but it wasn't bad -- but none of us would order it again. After dinner, we had dessert: chocolate crème brûlée, their cookie assortment, and their chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. All three were great, with the crème brûlée being the hands-down star. All in all, Carr's Restaurant is a wonderful place, and we're glad we went there while on vacation in "Amish Country." If we ever make it back, we will for sure visit this establishment again -- and I'd advise everyone else to try Carr's too!

Have been here numerous times with family occasions and now, for business meeting. Food is great, as are beverages (strong pour, unusual these days). Great service, has never disappointed. Our HQ for fine dining in Lancaster.

Easily Lancaster's best. Imaginative menu executed consistently. Knowledgeable, caring service. Broad wine list with reasonable prices. We are regulars.
