Cheap breakfast option with lots of options, but not a lot of taste. On the same level as Denny's.

Looking for a good breakfast, diner style food, or Valley Dairy's signature ice cream this is the place to visit. My family and I frequent Valley Dairy in Richland when I'm at home visiting, and it's always a good experience.

A good midrange diner that has been a staple in the area for over 50 years. I listened to stories my 92 yr old dad told me about times he and his friends met here and had lunch or breakfast back in the 60s. Good coffee. There really are no surprises on the menu if you are expecting diner food - burgers, salads, pastas all in ample portions at fair prices. The clientele is mostly over 60. The restaurant is clean with booths and a few tables for larger parties. They have an ice cream bar in one end of the room that offers at least 50 flavors and the menu adds shakes and sundaes of varying complexities. As I don't eat anything with bovine milk in it (bovine milk is for baby cows not humans) I can't attest to the freshness or taste of the ice cream products. They offer pints and quarts to take out. It takes a bit of work to get food you can eat if you're vegan (asking about gravies and dressings, removing anything animal based from food particularly cheese which is on nearly everything today and has the same addictive effect as cocaine on the human nervous system) but they listened and brought me exactly what I ordered. I'll continue to patronize this place.

My first Valley Dairy experience...I'm almost ashamed to say that. Anyway, my friend and I went were for lunch one day. We were seated immediately, but our waiter took a little longer than I had expected to get our drink order. It wasn't a big deal, he did an ok job as our waiter, but for an almost empty restaurant I expected a little more prompt service. (Especially when there were 3-4 other waitresses just standing around.) I ordered the club sandwich without tomato and fries. The sandwich had tomato on it, again, wasn't a huge deal, but the idea that I requested no tomato. The fries were just ok. Our waiter was very attentive with the exception of after we just sat down. He was very quick to refill our drinks. Overall, it was an ok experince. Forgetable at best. If given the opportunity I'd probably return.

I'm a fan of Valley Dairy. It's a small localized chain with decent enough food. It's got the diner feel to it. Staff were as friendly as can be, attentive to our needs and never missed a chance to see if we needed anything. The food, even though it is decent, it wasn't very decent this past visit. I had ordered the chicken tender meal. The fries were bland, nothing too special about them at all, in fact I could have swore they were store bought. The chicken tenders were over cooked. So much so that the coating separated from the chicken itself. When I say chicken, I mean a very slender piece of chicken. The meal wasn't very feeling this past visit, but that won't deter me from returning.

You might as well smear it right on your hips! Ah the memories that I have for this place, it's been around longer than I have and we did not go out to eat often when we were young, but this was one of my Mom's favorite places to take her five children for a meal or an ice cream treat. As I got older my friends and I loved nothing more than to stop in for fries with gravy or ice cream. Valley Dairy is a glorified Friendly's, at least to me it is, they serve a full breakfast, lunch and dinner with homemade soups, chili, sandwiches, entrees and some of the best hot meat loaf or turkey with gravy meals or sandwiches, but what I really love about them is their homemade ice cream. They make the very best maple walnut ice cream loaded with big pieces of walnuts and they will even serve it in a dish covered with their famous and exclusive warm walnut syrup, hello yum! So many flavors of ice cream and sherbets and to not miss a trick they have a full and flavorful line of frozen yogurts. If you want a banana split made the way it should be or one of the best root beer floats, grab a seat or take it to go and their orange blossom is so good with orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream blended together, although do beware as sucking on this puppy does induce brain freeze if you enjoy it too fast! On my most recent trip to Johnstown, I just had to stop in and relive a few memories, they have not changed too much and they still use paper place mats with advertising for the local businesses. I've been thinking of pumpkin a lot lately as I love anything pumpkin so much, it makes my favorite pie, cookies and Valley Dairy has always been number one when it comes to pumpkin ice cream. Each of us were planning on only having ice cream and ended up finding other things on the menu that we just had to have first. I, of course, had to have my fries with the rich brown gravy and I shared my hot meat loaf sandwich which would not taste any better if you made it at home. I also ordered the firecracker shrimp with a Thai chili sauce, which killed me to share since they were as good as any I have had. For my dessert I had one scoop of pumpkin ice cream and another scoop of maple walnut with the warm walnut sauce and it is still the very best there is! Noticing they had pumpkin pancakes on the menu and mentioning that I had never had them and how much I so do love pumpkin to a yelp friend ( brian S. RI.) I stopped by in the morning for breakfast and they were some of the best pancakes I have ever had with so much pumpkin flavor, cinnamon and spice, do ask for the warm maple walnut sauce to cover the tops! They do sell their ice cream in tubs to go. They now have coffee buddies which are small cakes filled with mousse and topped with heaven, like the key lime cake with key lime mousse and coconut, the red velvet with a cream cheese mousse and the chocolate peanut butter cup with a rich chocolate cake for the top and bottom filled with a peanut butter mousse and topped with broken peanut butter cups. Hello, which one do I want to take home? All of them! Talk about decadent! Two of my favorite stories of Valley Dairy, Mom and her girlfriend's used to belong to Weight Watchers and after we all got on the bus for school they would walk for miles and miles and end up at Valley Dairy as their reward! Second, my youngest brother once ordered the "kitchen sink", I forget how many scoops of ice cream it had and a zillion toppings, but it was enough to feed an army and he ate it! Ah the memories... Oh BTW, I did notice kids meals are a buck!
