For me, Crossroads is all about the pizza. My family has been getting pizza from here for what seems like my entire life. Now that I live out of state, I make sure to have a pizza night at least one evening when I'm in town. Ask for your pizza thin and crispy -- and note that its cash only.

Great cheese steaks and pizza, friendly staff.

I heard mixed reviews about Crossroads, but I'm a firm believer in making my own opinion so I went to check out the place. I was craving a chicken cheesesteak, and heard great things about their cheesesteaks. I was so disappointed to learn once I arrived they did not offer chicken cheesesteaks. BIG LET DOWN. So I opted for a salad, it was basically just foxy lettuce. I personally would not go back, however if they added chicken cheesesteaks, I'd be more than happy to give it another try.

I'm sorry too, I just don't get it...this is not good pizza, nor what I expected based on people's raving reviews. The pepperoni tasted like hot dog...I'm really sorry you have a great business, but this is not pizza lover's pizza, or people who have ever had great italian food

There is good pizza, there is bad pizza, and then there is the Crossroads. If I had to describe Crossroads pizza in one word it would be legendary. I have friends who drive from Philadelphia and North Jersey to smash a couple pitchers of beer, cheesesteaks, and a few pizzas. However, before you go here expecting New York style pizza be for warned that this is a more traditional bar pizza that has thin crispy crust, sharp cheese, and tangy sauce. The flavor of the pizza is fantastic and it is completely unique to the Matey's style. Personally, I have been going here my entire life and it was a good tonight as I ever could remember it. Crossroads Hotel is a cash only so make sure you have money. It is a locally owned establishment that has offered roughly the same menu options since its inception. Pizza, Cheesesteaks, and French Fries. The menu has some other items but personally I would never stray from the mainstays. They have a full bar and a giant marlin hanging in the dinning area. The place gets busy around dinner time and does an ok lunch. If eating leftover Crossroads pizza for breakfast is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Who doesn't love a great cheesesteak!? The best around!!!

We always make it a point to come here when we are home for cheesesteaks and pizza. California cheesesteak is amazing, pizza is to die for. Prices are super cheap and service is fast. Great little spot!

Pizza is one of our favorites, thin crust, well-done cheese. Steak sandwiches probably the best in the entire region. Pizza, steak sandwiches, and a pitcher of beer = perfect low-key (unhealthy) dinner for two. Cash only.

The Best Steak Sandwiches and Pizza I have loved eating at Crossroads Hotel from childhood, and the food still delights me today! As a Texan, I live in great expectation of my next chance to eat at Crossroads! Steak sandwiches and pizza make Crossroads famous. The steak sandwiches begin with a fresh roll, filled to the brim with perfectly-cooked chip steak, and then flavored with the house steak sauce. Abundant cheese, hot peppers, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and/or mayo are added, depending on the sandwich ordered. The pepperoni pizza has a base of thin curst, home-made pizza sauce, and a generous covering of cheese. The pepperoni is truly unique. The spices in the meat make the flavors come together perfectly, leading you to a second or third slice. The meal would not be complete without a pitcher of birch beer or one of the lagers on tap. The décor of the restaurant is a bit dated, as few things have changed since my first visit. However, everyone comes for the tasty food. As an exclamation point on the meal, the fare is very reasonably priced. Enjoy!

They have a unique style pizza here. Hungarian? The pepperoni is also unique. I get it to go sometimes when I want to mix things up. im taking off a star as the large pie is not that big, and its over $14. cash only.

A conversation with my friends best sums up Crossroads. After a heated debate about the best pizza in the Valley, someone mentioned Crossroads. Mike quickly said "You can't compare, they're on a whole different level." It's true. Crossroads is unique and different. You won't find anything like it. It's Hungarian style with thin sourdough crust. You'll hear lots about the famous cheesesteaks and it's all true. They're juicy with a delicious and unique cheese sauce. You'll hear how families have been coming here for generations. It's incredible - the cheesesteak and pizza I had 25 years ago is the same exact taste when I order today. It's truly nostalgic. There's more that you won't hear about! The BLTs are awesome and the French onion soup is the best I've had. The BLT has a B, an L, and a T with perfectly toasted bread and mayo in every single bite. Every single one! And the French onion soup is the same recipe used in the Matey's prior high end restaurant, Hellertown Hotel. While an usual menu item in a pizza place, it is so worth getting. Food is served on paper plates and its cash only and the prices are awesome because of it. Prices have only raised slightly in the past few decades! Now I'm hungry. I know what I'm getting for lunch!

Crossroads has been a family tradition since I was born; and my Mom and Aunt were going here since they were young adults. The bacon pizza pie is our favorite; no matter what else we order from the menu, it's not Crossroads without a bacon pie. You must try it if you enjoy bacon. The steaks are always juicy and stuffed/packed. You can't go wrong with their steaks.

Great place for nostalgia. Growing up in Freemansburg, my family and I frequented this place. Two pitchers of Birch Beer and two large Cheese pizzas were a biweekly occurrence. As a kid I begged for jukebox money and was utterly delighted to hear my song come on. We took turns posing in front of the mounted Swordfish they have on the wall. I moved away from the area 9 years ago so when I came back for a two week visit this place was first on my "we must eat here" list. Everything is exactly as I remember it. The birch beer is the same, the pizza is the same, the swordfish is still there but the jukebox was moved or missing. I get that though because I can imagine they are extremely expensive to own. Even the staff was the same and came over to say hello. Thank god for delicious pizza, birch beer and reliving my childhood memories.

They are the best in the Valley, nothing more needs to be said!!! The staff are friendly and have been there for years and know their product. The pizza is to die for as are the cheese steaks. Its a must do when in the area of the Sands casino too, since it's less than 5 minutes away

As others have said here, when we moved into the area all we kept hearing was this is the best pizza around. From outside, it looks hopeful... a decent looking old inn building. But once you go inside you enter a time warp. There are fast food places that have more ambiance than this joint has. Formica tables (sticky and dirty from the tired old waitresses), sticky dirty floors, very thin, floppy paper plates and plastic utensils that actually bend as you try to eat with them! The food stinks. The pizzas are the worst I've ever had in my life. They market the same pizzas frozen in the area... perhaps they are serving the same frozen ones in-house. The sauce is incredibly acidic and salty. The bread they use for their sandwiches is awful low grade stuff full of air. Think Wonder Bread hoagie. The cheese steaks are no better than you'd get at (ugh) Sonic and are actually dry. They taste of a dirty flat top grill. The fries are obviously frozen and poorly cooked. This place is perhaps popular because of family habits... and it's cheap. I can't imagine anyone rating this highly really knows what a good tasting meal is--or a good pizza. Maybe after another generation or two goes by the wayside, someone will wake up and re-hab this place and start cooking some real food--and REAL pizza. I'm sure the only reason they can stay in business is because it's a family owned business and building. Low overhead can make any nightmare of a restaurant keep it's doors open... Stay clear of this low grade place. Anyone know Robert Irvine's number?? Update: Good Lord, does anyone know how to rate a restaurant on here? There are people taking about "bitchy" waitresses, "greasy food", slow service, a bad smell, trashy old decor, and a frozen pizza taste... and STILL they give it 4-5 stars?? Are you all too embarrassed to admit the truth about this joint?? Perhaps it's a Pennsylvania thing... eat anything with starch, grease, too much salt and on paper plates--MMmm... just like Mama used to buy take-out. I spent my life mostly in Jersey and NYC. I know good food and garbage. Guess what this place serves?

  • Cheif F.

Best cheesesteak outside of Philly....and dare I say one of the best ever over any in Philly? I do! Their beef is super yummy- finely chopped and tastes like roast. Not too greasy. The best part is they toast the sandwich under a broiler so it gets toasty. The only drawback is 1) customer service is certainly lacking. 2) always crowded so it takes a while to get your order once you arrive for takeout 3) wish they did delivery!

    (5)
  • B A.

Popular place with the locals not sure why? Food tastes processed especially the generic pizza. People rave about the cheese steaks but every place in town serves an equal or better one IMO.

    (2)
  • Candice C.

Waitress was sweet, funny and fast. I hate waiting for a check. The pizza was pepperoni & mushroom made fresh. Love that it was thin crust, but not a soft crust. They didn't have egg nog, but that was okay to. Clean restaurant always important. I would go there again. Oh and bring cash.

    (3)
  • Barkly F.

Just average. Their pizza is the only thing I would eat here and that's average. The rest of the menu can be avoided. I'm not sure why this place is popular.

    (3)
  • Stephanie G.

One of the best chesesteaks in the Valley. I've read some people think the steaks are dry, and they can be; you just have to order extra sauce on the side and dip. Their sauce is a bit sweeter than most but it still is very tasty. Cheese is not goopy white american like most other places. Crossroads uses a blend of mozzarella and provolone on their cheesesteaks. Great fries and pierogies. Decent selection of beers on tap too. My sister swears by the pizza, but I'm not a fan. It's a little salty and the crust has the consistency of a store bought frozen pizza.

To correct a review by Vanessa W. below, Crossroads Hotel DOES NOT have a location in Fountain Hill, too. The Matey's in Fountain Hill and the Matey's Crossroads in Hellertown are two completely different places that don't even belong to the same family. As far as the restaurant, everything here is hometown. To add to that, either you hate it, or you love it. Crossroads is VERY convenient to anyone living in town, and the fresh or frozen pizza is GREAT. The fresh is so much better, but if you're on the go, the frozen is cheap ($4.50) compared to most brands carried in grocery stores, and its much tastier! The cheesesteaks are NOTHING to write home about like everyone raves, unless you love a TON of sauce. As a person who likes little to no sauce on a cheesesteak, Crossroads are horrible. If you take-out, there is a separate entrance in the back of the building, which is very convenient. If not, you can sit at the bar or in the dining room. The dining room, like others have stated, has NOT been redecorated since the 70s or 80s, but it's still always clean. Waitresses inside are "diner" waitresses, but are GOOD at their jobs. They'll usually sit down with you to take your order, just simply because they are darn tired.

For what it is, it is good stuff. Look here for the very most basic in bar food. Had a cheese steak and it was good - good like the neighborhood italian place near where I grew up in NJ. Would definately go back for another cheese steak. This is something it seems like most places in this area have trouble doing right, so I'm giving four stars for getting a simple greasy basic down. Price was also right. Bizarre service experience - waitress brought our sandwiches out on a tray, put plates on our table, and then transferred the sandwiches from her tray to our plates with her bare hands directly on the bare sandwich! Waitress was surly - it's just all part of the experience. Sometimes it's nice to eat somewhere they treat you like family LOL. Interior is dated and a bit dirty.

I'm not a huge cheesesteak person, but I can tell when cheesesteak is dry and boring. And Crossroads cheesesteak is dry and boring. The pizza is nothing special. The atmosphere is totally blah. We always get takeout for my family there, because for some reason they like it. Another drawback is that they only take cash, which I guess is fine if you have a huge demographic of old people who are afraid of credit cards. Parking is a mess as well.

As far as steak sanwiches go this is the only place that serves the greatest. To me. I also love their pizza. It is bar pizza style but good.

  • Mandi K.

Hands down the best cheese steaks & pizza I have ever had. The food usually takes a while to come out and the waitresses get really flustered easily it seems, but overall this is one of my favorite places to go with my mom. You can go dressed comfortably and relax. The martinis are also delicious. The interior decor is questionable but just relax. Also, their main customer base is the elderly. ***THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS. HAVE CASH ON YOU, OR BE PREPARED TO USE THE ATM IN THE BAR AREA.

Came here for a casual Friday dinner while in town for the night. Had a house salad, which was a great portion size, and the broiled chicken sandwich that came on a hearty bun with all of the fixings. My table also ordered a pizza which did look a little Digiorno-esque, but was said to be very good, as well as their cheesesteak. I was overall pleased with everything. The table across from us ordered perogies and I experienced some pangs of jealousy..next time that's on my to-get list. Cheap pitchers, too, and everything is reasonably priced. If you're looking for a quaint and down to earth type of family style dining, this will fit the bill.

  • Candi K.

I've picked up a frozen pizza or two. Definitely different than most pizza in the Valley. We did eat in one night and had cheesesteaks. Not the best, but not the worst. They defintely haven't redecorated in years, and our waitress was pretty surly. The food did come out pretty fast though. We went there because someone told us this place had the best cheese steaks in the Valley. I wouldn't go that far, but it's a pretty reasonably priced option for decent food if you are in Hellertown.

I think it's time to put this place onto perspective on Yelp. What it is is a neighborhood place that has a loyal following among locals for a menu that is little changed over decades. The pizza is amply described as "bar pizza" - it's thin, with a unique crust that is most akin to the crispness of frozen pizza, except that it is freshly made dough, daily. It will. It will not appeal to many tastes, particularly those that are comparing it to NY actual/style pizza. It doesn't try to be that product, it is it's own interpretation. The decor is dated, but it is clean. The service is consistent. But again, those that stop here should read the reviews in advance, as it's evident what your getting. For the adventurous, you may not like it, you may not be used to it, but consider it an experience in local/Bethlehem culture. I would never call this the best pizza ever, but it can be a nice change of pace for "something different". I usually sit at the bar, which I think is more festive than the dining room.

Absolutely loved the BLT sandwich!!! Nice atmosphere... good food... only problem we had was it is cash only?!? WTF???? Try posting it ... I took the fees out of the tip, sorry bartender?!?

Crossroads easily has a top 5 pizza in the Lehigh Valley, and the california cheesesteaks are great too. Their pizza sauce is very unique and delicious. Highly recommend getting takeout from here.

What the heck? I had at least five people on separate occasions from different walks of life recommend me this place. They advertise as the best in Hellertown and I was all "Yeah I have to try this place now! It's got to be awesome!" It's really a charming setup they have. There's a main restaurant in the front and they have a private parking lot where you can walk in the side and get takeout. Very quick service too. Friendly staff and very helpful. But the pizza is absolutely terrible! It tastes like the pre-made pizzas you get at the grocery store deli and bake at home. I have nice things to say about everything else but the food is just awful here! The pizza crust is rubbery, the sauce is slippery and the cheese slides off, and the cheese itself is paltry. And I know I got the real deal because the guy at the counter was awesome and made sure I was getting the freshest slices out of the oven. So it wasn't like I got some odds and ends they had sitting in the back. I'm just thoroughly confused.

First of all, there is a frozen pizza made by crossroads. However, they do not serve this at the restaurant. The pizza can be greasy, but it is an excellent pie for the Lehigh Valley. I only know of a handful of people who do not like it. The steak and cheese steaks are phenomenal.

    (4)
  • Paul B.

Pizza is ok, but very salty. Cheesesteaks are completely bland and dry. Many people rave about the cheesesteaks here, they really need to expand their horizons and try one somewhere else. Without sauce on it, you won't be able to swallow it. Atmosphere is late 70's and very dated. Also, they only take cash.

Excellent Pizza and California cheese stake.

Best cheesesteaks outside of Philly, yum! Wash it down with a small pitcher of draft birch beer and thank your lucky stars for stopping in. Have yet to try any of the other sandwiches or pizza, but there's always a steady crowd coming through. The locals know good food :-)

After reading mixed reviews on here, my friends and I decided to try the place for ourselves. I had heard they make a mean cheesesteak. Well we walk into the place at 5 pm on a Saturday and as my sister put it they might as well have hung a sign outside that said "retirement home." As it was jammed packed with older people. The place was rather worn looking and had a smoking area to the left (yuck!). We were going to get our food to go when we realized we would have to stand there for 15 minutes waiting for our food. The place had a weird odor going on, and that coupled with the "ambiance" we just couldn't take it. We high tailed it out of there. So my recommendation is definitely don't eat in here. And call ahead.

The one thing that brings me back to Pa...besides family of course. I don't know if it's a mix of the nostalgia (probably the first pizza I have ever had), remembering fighting with my cousins to get the seat by the "big fish," or just how good the food is, but when I have my yearly pilgrimage back East (relocated to Ca), the first stop is usually Crossroads. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the pizza. And the pirogies. So, if I had to eat it in a truck-stop bathroom, I probably would. That being said, there's something to be said for dining IN. Things haven't changed much in the 20 some-odd years I've been breathing it all in... The same waitress that served my parents during their "courting" days serves us now. Usually I hate when servers sit down with you- it seems condescending . Here, it's not. She's friendly enough and tired enough for it to work. The pizza itself is simply wonderful. Once again, I can't tell if I'm biased because of nostalgia, or because of family pressure (my grandparents basically lived up the street), but I also don't care. I'll let the reader decide if there is any objective basis for my review, and if there isn't, I'm truly sorry. Finally, one of the advantages I love now-a-days, being in my mid-twenties, is drunkenly reminiscing about Crossroads IN CROSSROADS. Writing this now, I'm getting thirsty for some Yuengling pitchers peppered with the occasional belly-laugh.

Stopped here today after a trip back from NYC. I have been driving past this place all my life and decided to try out this famous pizza. It was just awful. Got a pepperoni pizza and I think it was spam or something. It certainly was not the pepperoni you get everywhere else. Eating real pizza in NYC and then coming to this place was a big mistake. Nothing against old people but it seems they are the only ones who dine here. Oh well you only make this mistake once.

    (1)
  • Rick M.

The people that have written bad reviews are clueless about this place! Sit in the bar, have a lemon drop or a draft.. The bartenders are a treat. The food... Pizza, burgers or a cheese steak, that's it! Simple is good.

    (5)
  • Kent F.

Lots of different opinions on this one. Stopped in for a quick dinner on a Thursday night. No problem getting a seat and the service was prompt and pleasant. Food was good but not spectacular. I would give the cheesesteak an ok , the highlight for me was the pizza, a local style, but very flavorful. My main complaint would be the lack of free refills on soda, kinda like living in the past.

Whenever I'm visiting the paternal grandparents up in Bethlehem, I never turn down a trip to the Crossroads. I've probably been to thousands of restaurants domestic and international, and tried hundreds of varieties of pizza, and I can say with out any doubt that the Crossroads' pepperoni pizza is my favorite pizza in the United States. Wonderful family friendly atmosphere, a jukebox (always good fun), and of course great food.

  • Robert S.

I thought I was the only local who had never been to this place until last month. Like others mention, the decor is "70s wood panel basement" but seemed fairly clean. It was pretty busy at 9pm on a weeknight but we were seated quickly. The pizza is definitely "different" but I liked it. Especially the sausage pizza. The waitress had that "diner personality" but was quick and friendly. One tip, don't order any "call" brands of liquor from the bar unless you want to spend $8 on the weakest pour you've ever seen. I think the place is now non-smoking due to the change in PA law. At least it didn't smell smoky when I was there. It's not on my "favorites" list but I'd try the Crossroads again.

    (3)
  • Dorothygale T.

Hands down the best "California" cheesesteak! Pizza is ok, but as someone mentioned, it's frozen. The waitresses are all bitches, which sucks...but just ignore them.

    (5)
  • Denis M.

Their pizza is good but cheesesteaks are their speciality. The best cheesesteaks north of Philadelphia in my opinion.. I practically lived on this delightful sandwich during college. That along with beer and fries and I was in heaven! Their secret is in a final baking of the steak in a pizza over, melting a generous portion of mozzerella cheese on top. That adds an incredible taste. I still look forward to take out from the Crossroads on special occasions. They have a nice bar and eat-in restaurant. Nothing fancy, casual with good service and bargain prices.

    (5)
  • Christopher M.

I can't believe all the negative feedback about the Pizza. I loved the pizza there. That's the only thing that i would order off the menu when I was a kid going there with my parents. Now When I visit the Lehigh Valley It is a MUST STOP for me. The pizza there can definitely beat Little Cearurs, Dominos, Pizza Hut. There was one pizza place that i has that come close the taste of Crossroads, Florencia's in Sun City West AZ. Going there is like the Crossroads of the west, But there is nothing like the orginal.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
