I am writing this un-biased although my fiancée works there. I've eaten at JAPH a handful of times now. They have the BEST burgers in the area. Just yesterday I visited and got the Chicken Chesapeake along with a Lancaster weifenheizer. I was not at all happy with the meal. Chicken was really dry and hardly any flavor. I sent it back and ordered their Reuben and fries. UNBELIEVABLE difference. The corned beef was so juicy, just the right amount of dressing and coulda done with more kraut, but I was really impressed. They are consistent, and though the service could be better, I will definitely go back.

Stopped in for lunch and everything was great. The hand cut fries were perfectly cooked and the burger was perfect med to order as well. Would stop back again.

Stopped by for wings to watch the World Cup. Served wet brown celery with meal. Asked for fresh celery, they brought out more brown wilty stuff. No pride here, need to stick to beer!!

The food is great and the beer selection outstanding -- definitely for a small town like Greencastle. We just moved to the area from DC and thought we would check out the Public House. It was exactly what we were looking in regards to a place to socialize. We will become regulars!

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I am originally from Greencastle, and coming back of age to enjoy an adult beverage, I was excited to try a bar that I thought would be the classy kind of establishment that I am accustomed to now days. I got there around 9 pm on a Friday night, and was originally pleasantly pleased with live music. That is about the ONLY thing good about the place. First, my friends and I sat down at a table (sign at the front read "please seat yourself") expecting a waitress to come and bring us a menu and/or explain drink specials. Fast-forward 20 minutes, still no waitress came to help us. We made eye contact with them so they saw us, tried waving them down when they were looking, and even said "excuse me miss" as they walked by--NOTHING! This went on for 10 more minutes. 30 minutes into the evening, we decided to get up to the bar and fight the over-populated-crowd-for-only-one-bartender. (That was why we originally waited for a waitress or server, the bar was too crowded and we figured it would be easier to have a drink brought to us WITH FOOD). Finally got the first round of drinks--beer was good, but what beer isnt? I will tell you what beer isn't--no beer. Having no beer is not good and they ran out of everything from Yuengling to PBR. I mean HOW DOES A BAR RUN OUT OF PBR OR YUENGLING?! Now, I am more of a craft drinker myself, but did not want to pay the outrageous $5 for 12 oz. of Mad Elf, even though thats what I was stuck with after everything else was gone. The icing on the cake was that even though they are open until 2 am (allegedly), the place cleared out around midnight, and i felt as though I was being rushed out by some lady who went on about how they were going to start mopping and cleaning up soon. Needless to say after getting turned down because of LACK OF BEER AT A BAR and NOT GETTING ANY FOOD OR ATTENTION FROM SERVERS THE ENTIRE EVENING, I will NEVER be coming back here again.

I really enjoyed the food. Wednesday s are tavern night (half price burgers). A nice atmosphere for casual dinning. They do have more expensive dishes on the menu such as prime rib and crab cakes. Everyone that I've talked to says those meals are great. Also if you check them out on Thursday nights they have a wing and beer special.

Good place I will return. Burger prepared perfect and exactly the way I wanted it. Next visit will be crab cakes if only they are jumbo lump. The menu does not specify. Server seemed new but did a great job. Prompt service even though they had number out large parties to slow their processes down!

Dining Date: March 26, 2014 for dinner. Driving through the area on Rt. 81, the JAP House was an unexpected find! The tuna appetizer was excellent and the "Butchers Cut" grilled beef was cooked perfectly, including all the sides. The service was very good from the drink orders through the entire meal. The bar had 8-10 craft beers on tap as well as a good selection of bottled beer. My only suggestion for improvement offs the decor is somewhat dated, but no big deal.

Yelp to the rescue! I was driving up for my annual trek to Vermont and was trying to make it from Richmond, VA to Binghamton, NY on a Friday night and when researching places to stop, Greencastle, PA ended up as the halfway point. A quick search of higher-rated restaurants turned up the John Allison Public House. I am soooo glad I decided to stop in. The restaurant is in an interesting building in a lovely small downtown area. Inside was not quite what I was expecting. It is much more casual than its exterior would leave you to believe. I was greeted warmly and seated by a waiter and a trainee, both of whom made sure I was taken care of properly the entire stay. I chose the Herb-Encrusted Prime Rib and ordered it as rare as they had it. I'll admit I had girded myself for disappointment but the dish that arrived was absolute perfection. I enjoyed it all. The John Allison Public House was an oasis for me in my travels. I was welcomed, fed, relaxed, and recharged. The hours still left ahead of me on the road were put behind me easier for the effort by the staff at this wonderful spot.

My friend and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday out of the blue. So glad that we did! I had an incredible spinach salad (photo), and she had a turkey reuben. Both were delicious. Great service, nice clean historic place (it's huge!!). We will be back!

A wonderful place to go for an excellent meal or to just stop in for a drink. The wait staff is excellent. The food is excellent. The atmosphere is excellent. You can't beat Wednesday's 1/2 price burgers and fresh cut fries. You won't find a better burger in the area! They also have entertainment every Friday and Saturday night. John, the owner, has a knack for finding amazing talent. I highly recommend stopping by and experiencing the John Allison!

heard a lot about this place from friends. the bar part seems really good. the crab came tasted like it was tuna with cheese. there was very little crab taste in it. i was a little disappointed. also I ordered the seafood special and it was the rock fish. it came in a salsa sauce over rice. the sauce was really good. but the fish tasted NOT fresh. at some point it was a little rubbery. so my first trip there I wasn't impressed with the food. especially for the price they charge. i will go there again at some point and maybe it will get a better review from me.

The JAP House is a local favorite in Greencastle with a great beer selection and decent food. It has a pub style atmosphere with 10 taps with a rotating, seasonal selection.

Went on a Saturday night right about 9. This was our first time here as we are new to area. We were asked if we wanted to sit in dining or bar. The bar was extremely loud, full of drunk townies. So we opted for the dining area. We were seated with menus and we waited. And waited. Oh there's a server, and she made eye contact so she must be coming to get at least our drink order, right? Oh so wrong, we sat there kind of laughing and wondering if they really just left us there for almost 20 minutes without anyone coming to our table. When we walked out the hostess looked confused and we let her know nobody came to get our order. She was very apologetic, offering a drink on her but let's face it, first impressions tell a lot. It stinks, for their business because we eat out, a lot! We usually head to northern VA or DC every weekend and we were hoping we had found a local spot, but we didn't.

This place has drastically improved in the past couple years since they opened. Mike is the best bartender around and will always keep your glass filled. Food is always good now. Salads are way too expensive and the wait staff is still not very good but other than that it's all good.

Stopped in for something other than Highway food. The Pub Burger is outrageously good. The Ruben was fantastic. Great service, friendly staff. I would have given them five stars if they had given me the Guinness glass.

I went to the the John Allison Public house for the first time tonight and I will be back for sure I had the Crispy Sweet Chili BBQ Pork Belly and the flavor profile is unreal the Chef there has a very good concept of flavors and profiling them all together...Chef also brought me a sample of the Hickory Smoked Prime Rib that was very very good I would say its the best prime rib I've had. The bar staff is very good as well I will be back to the John Allison Public House

It has taken me a little while to get to this review but I did want to get it out there. Greencastle has a thing called "First Friday" (actually common in this area of PA) where there are vendors, etc out on sidewalks of main street (actually Baltimore Street) and sometimes entertainment and as a result downtown businesses like John Allison Public House are very busy on the first Friday of each month. So it was that we ended up having dinner with Friends at the "JAP House" on Friday 2 Sep 2011. This was at least our 5th visit to this establishment since it opened and with one exception we have always been disappointed. The same owners have a restaurant in Mercersburg "Flannerys" that is always excellent and so we always expect the same at the "JAP House". On this night the staff was overwhelmed (i.e. the place was understaffed for a First Friday) and service was slow - very slow. I ordered two "small plates" and to be honest by the time they arrive I had had enough beer to fill me up and was no longer hungry but anyway. One of the small plates I ordered was a Fish Taco (because I had recently had some awesome fish tacos in Gordon Biersch in Tysons Corner, VA and they sounded good in the description even if the fish was one I had never heard of. When the dish arrived it the "Taco shell" was made from raw tuna powdered with corn flour (I love raw tuna) but it was absolutely aweful as a taco shell - disappointed yet again. While I continue to highly recommend Flannery's in Mercersburg I caution you on the "JAP House" unless you are just going to the bar for craftbrews - they do have a great beer selection. OH and never go here on First Friday!

Had their steak with garlic herb fries. Wow! The steak, a good sized portion, was SO tender, it almost melted in my mouth. The service was great! Friendly, courteous and prompt -- got my order just right. I have been to Flannery's (the parent business) also and I can honestly say I have never had ANYTHING from either place that was less than perfect -- yeah, it might cost a bit more, but ya know, most times you get what you pay for! Really, you cannot go wrong with John Allison or Flannery's! I cannot recommend the John Allison Public House any more than I am! If you don't try it, then you're a fool.

Hopefully I'll be able to revise this review in the future because I was really looking forward to a nice dinner here, but my first impression of this place isn't good. The menu is very 'gourmet' & the prices reflect it. Expect 30$ entrees. Service was very poor & after 1 hr & 15 mins. we asked our server how our food was doing. She said she'd check with the kitchen... then never came back. After 1 hr. & 30 mins. we found out (from another server) that they hadn't even started our entrees yet & it would be another 30 mins or so. We decided to leave at that point, there's a kid in the family who just couldn't wait any longer, & though we were very apologetic... no one was sorry to see us go & no one stopped to offer any apologies for our bad experience. It's a new restaurant, so hopefully they get everything sorted out soon.

My wife and I stopped here on way up 81 from VA (A mile west of 81) in quest to avoid the usual interstate fast food. Each had soup and we split a sandwich. Cream of crab was excellent and chicken corn was pretty good also. We split a classic rueben and both were happy! Corned beef could have been sliced thinner. Nice country town setting and home cooking for sure.

Was in town visiting family and decided to check this place out. Wow! What a meal! My wife and I shared a barbecued pork belly appetizer (which sounded odd but tasted amazing!). For dinner we shared a duck confit and smoked prime rib (yes, a medium rare prime rib with a smoky flavor). For dessert, we shared a lemon tart. Nice ambiance in a historic building. I would definitely stop in again!

Favorite Friday night stop which is close to home! Love their bar area and staff. We come for the Mediterranean App and the tap beers. Prices are great and service is perfect. Burgers have been great and cooked to a perfect medium. The Prime Rib Panini is excellent. Sweet potato fries are crispy salted wonderfulness. Surprised that I wasn't impressed with the crab cake sandwich. Too much bun for the cake and it was a little bland, still surprised when everything else we have tried has been delicious. Their beer flight is the perfect way to start the evening. Desserts look amazing but so far we have been too stuffed to try them. We don't stay if the bar and taproom are full because the dining area is just lacking something. Lighting needs to be dimmed and the walls are stark, just not warm and inviting like the pub area and every time I enter the lobby I think it's a great space and could be made into something special. But we will be back and looking for one of their comfortable bar seats!

This is without a doubt my second favorite area restaurant, following only it's sibling restaurant, Flannery's on the Square in Mercersburg. PA. The food is always creative, top notch, and well plated. There are some highly gourmet offerings, as well as familiar comfort food and sandwiches/salads. The grilled artichokes are the stuff of dreams, and they do sweet potatoes right - always soft inside. That must be difficult, because I've had them many places, and they never cook them well. You just can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They will modify most dishes to suit your preferences as well. I have to agree with the other review about the service though. With a couple of bright exceptions, the waitstaff seem new to the business, and lack that graciousness and efficiency that one would expect of this calibur restaurant. This can easily be corrected with proper management and training. If they can get to the level of Flannery's service, they'll get 5 stars. The bar tenders can't be beat. Just the greatest. It shows too, with all the locals crammed into the very large bar area. It's just like Cheers. The best thing about this restaurant is that they use local ingredients whenever possible. That will keep me coming back regardless of the misses on the service. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, you might want to make a reservation, as they get pretty packed.

First time in the new place. If I'm being honest, I'd have to say I was not impressed. Service was slow and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to who served what table. Chips were way beyond stale as if they were left open in a humid room or outside, wings had no buffalo flavor and only tasted from char that even bleu cheese couldn't overcome, Reuben was acceptable at best. I had high hopes and don't let an atypical experience stop me from giving a second chance. Hoping they are still working out kinks and in a few months I will try again.

Ate there tonight for the second time. They've revised the menu to include dinner entrees which I think is a welcome change. I had the BBQ boneless short rib which was very good and the calamari two ways which I really enjoyed and my 6 and 8 year olds liked also. Overall a very good experience and as always an excellent beer selection!
