Dropped in at McGarrey's for a steak salad ($7.95) People rave about the Rueben sandwiches and I saw one--they are impressive, but I really like the steak salad (served with fries.) Yes, it's iceberg lettuce and I'm no fan in general but I make exceptions for McGarreys. The waitstaff are efficient, intelligent and pleasant. The place was packed with big families, 8 to a table, and food was coming out efficiently. The bar next door has a couple of screens and a higher noise level. The restaurant was fairly quiet for as many people as there were. We didn't have a reservation, we dropped in on a Sunday night right at dinner time and were seated. The food was FAST! I have a feeling it is consistent here and will be back to test my hunch!

The food is very good. It's priced very well. The service is normally excellent. But the owner rubs me the wrong way. He comes off as a real jerk like your order isn't worth his time. If you don't have the personality to take orders or deal with customers then stay behind the doors. Almost walked out while ordering with him for my office lunch. As long as you are sitting at a table you will have a great meal just stay away from the bar and this guy.

I ordered the Reuben of course as a first time customer and the fiancé (who has been there plenty of times) ordered the steak tips. Reuben was pretty good, probably the best in Erie but not much competition for that title, and the steak tips were cooked appropriately and pretty good. Reminded me absolutely of a tavern in all senses even with the giant menu.....but I have to give 3 stars because I witnessed an employee pull a ladle out of the soup (which is clearly visible) and pick something out with his fingers to eat and put the ladle back in. Major mistake to do openly....come on! He wasn't even in chefs' clothes or anything so not sure if the owner or what. Just unacceptable to watch though. Hopefully this gets read by the company.

A solid 3.5 for the following reasons.. Sadly Oakwood has declined in recent years.. The salads are very disappointing (even for what you'd expect at a tavern-which isn't much), the fries are very frozen-tasting, and the seating is not ideal (not much room, too cramped) and the prices are a bit steep for tavern food. Their redeeming factor is, of course, the Reuben which is definitely the best in Erie. Maybe the meatloaf, too (with mashed potatoes and a slice of white bread- ehh).. What's good is great and what's mediocre is pretty crappy.. Overall- just stick with the Reuben and you won't be disappointed.. Unless you get the fries with :P

4 stars for the food! Nice diner. atmosphere is ok. There is a dining room side and a bar side. Bartender is a cool dude. Overall its a nice hidden dive of Erie. Serving...one of the best reubens we have ever had! Piping hot and juicy. the perfect balance of kraut and meat. (we dont like when places have over powering kraut) Sauce is on the side which is nice. Will continue to go. we love a great bite and a cold one. Keep it up Oakwood!

I lived a couple blocks from this place for 18 years and have never come to eat their "famous" Reuben. Considering I wasn't allowed to drive for 16 of those years I'll just blame my parents for that (love you mom and dad!). So I told my Dad it was finally time to try this Reuben. Okay, this may be controversial but....I didn't think it was all that great....not enough to be famous. I mean, I liked that they put a good amount of sauerkraut on it (some people scrimp on that) and I loved the bread. Funny enough, I'm not a big rye bread fan, but I love Reubens. This bread was a rye/wheat mix the server told me. That made sense, considering I thought it was so good! I also thought it was weird the thousand island dressing came on the side. Usually they just slap it on the sammie, but I guess they want you to do it yourself...maybe to add what you want (which for me would be the whole container, plus more!). I'd say the sammie was average, at best. We also ordered a side of fried cauliflower. I actually really liked these. But I mean, you fry anything it's probably gonna taste good! I felt like that scene in the movie Elf, where Will Ferrell goes into the coffee shop to congratulate them on having the best coffee in the city. They didn't really, they just had a regular cup of joe. I felt the same about the Reuben.

Classic neighborhood restaurant and pub. Service is friendly and fast. The menu is extensive. Don't bother with the salad (iceberg lettuce and not much else) and stick with the soup if you have the option. I got the perch, which was deep fried and seemed fresh. My wife got the Reuben which she said was tasty. The food comes out fast, so don't expect to wait long. Simple, honest food and good people running it.

Basic small-town cafe atmosphere. Dining area is mostly windowless, so it's easy to shut out all that dreary snow and oppressive summer heat & sun. Never have gone to the bar side. Knowing what to order is key: Recommend the baked perch, planked whitefish (gotta ask for it), or jumbo shrimp dinners, with baked potato or home fries--tho the regular fries are always perfectly made. I've tried the reuben ("Best in Erie!") and it's good I suppose, if one likes corned beef. Dinner side salad is okay but bland, being mostly iceberg lettuce (ever hear of romaine?) with a pallid wedge of unripe tomato. Dinner rolls fresh, but served cold off the baker's tray. McGarrey's do not serve dessert. The spoons are not greasy. Servers are efficient and welcoming, and friendly to regulars, who all turn their eyes to check out newcomers. No visit to Erie would be complete without at least one drop-by.

Family has been going there since I was born 23 years ago. Reuben is phat! They stuff that thing with so much kraut and corn beef. Free dinner rolls with your meal. Great beer on the side. There is seating on both the bar side and the dining side. I've found that it's best to want to get there fast on a busy day, because you won't find a table if you don't.

I have just visited today for the 2nd time. My husband thought his reuben was awful. I got the smothered chicken, it was less than thrilling. The place was packed and the service was good, it's unfortunate that the quality of food did not match. The best part about the lunch was the italian dressing on my side salad. I left wishing we had gone to a chain. I was sad on the ride home.

Stopped in based on the Trip Advisor rating and the fact that we were on this side of town and didn't want the processed chain experience. Service started off a bit rough, but oce it got rolling was fine. It's a nice neighborhood bar and grill set up with a varied menu. The dinner special was fresh lake perch-it was tasty but not OMG I've never had fish like this before. If I lived in town I would probably return, but was only visiting for a few days. Still, it was fun to check out a homegrown spot instead of something from a marketing consultant's formula.

I've loved the Oakwood since I used to come in with my grandparents as a kid. Every time I'm back visiting the area, this is the one restaurant I *insist* on going to every time. Their stuffed chicken breast is by far my favorite, even though they're known for their ruben sandwiches. Their stuffed peppers, city chicken, chicken & biscuits, and hot roast beef sandwiches are also to-die-for. You also can't beat their pricing, especially considering the huge portion sizes. YUM!

We have been going to McGarreys for over 30 years and had to make last min. reception arrangements As always the food and service was first class. An envelope with cash was left behind and the staff called right away. You would not find this in California where we live. This is a great place and an honest staff
