I made the mistake of not consulting yelp! Before trying this place. A rare occurrence for me since I check for just about everything. Had I looked at the reviews we wouldn't have even bothered with coming here. I am reviewing the table service only and not the hibachi grill. Personally I think hibachi grills are overrated and once you've been to one you've been to them all. I find them pricey and not very good. The sushi here like the other reviewers mentioned is not fresh. You are better off going to Wegman's. The specialty rolls are huge in size and you pretty much have to cut them in half to eat. They're impossible to eat in one bite. WTF? And because they are so big they are full of filler and light on fish so they have no flavor. Our coconut shrimp appetizer was good, we did enjoy that. The atmosphere is cool but the building is so big that even with a decent amount of diners it seems cavernous. I'd skip this one.

I'm no sushi virgin... I've had better sushi in larger cities - BUT the prices were double Aoyama even though the quality was not. This is non-costal, Erie PA, folks ;) I love the sushi here and the prices for the rolls are great. They have a variety of rolls & the rolls are huge!! For $15 - $18, you'll get a roll that is a full meal. It's a nice place to take a date, but my favorite thing to do is to go with a large group of people, order a bunch of different rolls and pass them around :) I've been here a bunch of times... always had good service, and the quality of the rolls is consistently good. The plates are fresh and beautiful. The Haibachi part is fun, but very salty. Not any saltier than anywhere else, just not my thing. It's a very fun thing to do with kids and you'll leave there stuffed, with lunch for the next day too. For Haibachi, the atmosphere is casual. Don't wear anything you wouldn't mind rolling a flying shrimp down the front of ;) and the performing chefs are friendly & entertaining. The atmosphere is classy at the bar and in the central (sushi) dining area. It can get a little noisy on Saturday nights, and sometimes in the winter, it's a little cold in there... but I really do love this place!! If you're in the mood for sushi in Erie PA, it doesn't get any better than this.

Very nice sushi restaurant in Erie. The waiters and sushi chefs were nice. The manager Young was especially friendly and his service was great. Restaurant has a nice atmosphere for dinner and the sushi and steak were delicious. The steak was super tender! Will definitely come back next time!

They are just OK. My hubby had the salad that comes with the meal and instead of the traditional ginger soy dressing we got a creamy dressing that tastes like mayo and soy sauce not appetizing. He got the new york steak hibachi meal though we sat in the dinning room area. The meat was plentiful, good veggi's no bean sprouts they use a lot of baby corn and zuccini. I tried a spicy salmon roll and spicy tuna hand roll. The tuna handroll looked like tuna pureed with mayo and that's exactly how it tasted, not spicy at all but big in size. The second time i had this handrool it was better but they realy over use the mayo in the mix. The spicy salmon hand roll was just awfull, they use the spicy mayo and drizzle it over long slices of salmon that still had skin on it and unable to chew through. I also had a maki spicy salmon roll and that too was hard to chew through. I've also had some yellowtail, shrimp and escolar nigiri sushi those were all pretty good. The miso soup was good and they have excellent jasmine tea. Since my second visit was at 3:45 pm on a sunday i noticed if you sit at the sushi bar you get faster service, and the tuna looks much better then some of what you get when sitting in the dinning room area. This time we got the tuna roll, we figured you can't do much to screw this one up and also regular spicy tuna maki roll. The tuna roll was great the tuna was fresh and that fantastic ruby red color. The maki roll was good again that may mix they use needs less mayo but it was good. They add roe eggs to this roll which my husband didn't enjoy they were larger then most and a little too extra fishy for him. Wel also had the tempura apetizer that was pretty good but a little greasy compaired to all the others i've had. All in all the second time was better and we've learned to sit at the sushi bar.

Best sushi in Erie. The chef's are friendly and fun to talk with while they make your sushi if you sit at the sushi bar.
(4)Trang T.
The best sushi place in Erie, bar none. It's always strange to see a kimono-clad Caucasian greeting you at the door, but otherwise, the ambiance was relaxed, the food was amazing. We had the lychee bellini, house sake, seafood yakitori, seared pepper tuna, chichi (or michi?) roll, and another roll that I can't remember the name of at the moment. For dessert, red bean ice cream. I would like to come back and try the hibachi as well, because though we sat at the bar, we could hear and hear the chefs go at it, and man did they sound great (not dirty or disinterested like at other Erie hibachis; they sounded great). Bottom line: I like my sushi, and especially in Erie, I love Aoyama :)
(4)Erika M.
Definitely not the best hibachi I have had. He overcooked the chicken and there was too sesame seeds on everything. Not to mention that he hit me in the eyeball with a piece of chicken when trying to fling it into my mouth. Probably won't be going back.

This is not a good sushi restaurant in my experience. I chose the diner option instead of Hibachi. The waiter ( served me in table 909) was very unfriendly. When I asked for a tea refill he only refilled one and I had to share my tea with my friend. The sushi was cold and the miso soup did not taste fresh as well. I lost the mood to eat here because of the unfriendly attitude of the waiter. I did not wish to order more because of this guy. Please search for other sushi places before you decide to go here.

I guess you could say good stuff while in Erie.
(3)Jasmine R.
Terrible experience. We were there on a date and the sushi was good but did not, by a long shot make up for the terrible service. After dinner, we went to the bar for two cosmos. Oh, so you know, cosmos are made in tiny glasses there and cost $7.50 each. They also taste as though they have no alcohol whatsoever in them. When I mentioned to the bartender that maybe he may have left the alcohol out, he got really indignant and said "well, if that's the case, then I just charged you alot of money for no alcohol now didn't I". And then followed that nasty comment up with "I'm a professional" like he was really SOMEBODY. Well, yes, he was a professional A**HOLE obviously. Okay now here's a kid 22-23 years old who is a cut above a bus person telling me off for not liking his drink. Who is the customer here? He was not about to relent and we gave up, drank our watered down cranberry juice, complained to the assistant manager on the way out who was also about 22 years old and couldn't care less. So if you are a glutton for punishment and actually enjoy being treated like that, by all means go to this place - it won't fail.

A first timer to Hibachi style Japanese cuisine and left a satieted, happy customer. Service was very quick and friendly and the chefs were not only talented, but talkative as well! Fantastic food, highly recommended, even though a shade on the expensive side.

My Japanese wife and I flew in from San Diego and everyone in Erie said that Aoyama was "the real deal". Although the decor was nice (generally Asian, not really Japanese), and the food was OK, the service left quite a bit to be desired. It started with the hostess, who apparently doesn't like to smile. Or get us to the table. The empty table. In the empty restaurant. Ok, no big deal. The table was next to the bar, where apparently it is still legal for folks to smoke in PA at the bar (I take not smelling like an ashtray for granted these days). In their defense we were a party of 10, but it took over an hour for the Udon to come out. Now, if you know how Udon is made, you know that they were either hand-rolling the noodles or they forgot the order. At the end of the meal the check was delivered with gratuity added, as per usual for a large party. 18% is a bit steep when the service is lousy. We waited and waited for the waiter (Paul) to come by and pick up the check, and also to hopefully offer us a box for our Tonkatsu (so-so) and teriyaki chicken (dry). I wound up asking the hostess after about 20 minutes. I didn't ask, but my guess is that the workers are Southeast Asian and/or Korean. I didn't see any Japanese folks working there, so not very authentic vis-a-vis my aforementioned friend's affirmation that this was the "real deal". For Peach Street and its sea of chain restaurants, Aoyama is OK at best. Stand alone, I wouldn't recommend it.

Had spicy lobster roll, kimodo roll and salmon skin roll. Spicy lobster and kimodo were the larger "special" rolls and priced about 16 dollars per roll. Each was 10 to 12 large pieces, most of which was filler consisting of rice (of course!), cucumber and lettuce (not crazy bout the lettuce). Taste was average, not bad, but not great, either. Didn't taste much of the main ingredient due to amount of filler. Salmon skin roll definitely not your typical salmon skin. The salmon skins were dipped in some type of deep fried batter reminiscent of sweet and sour chicken, it would have been better if it were tempura batter. They also added a slice of red bell pepper and a type of sweet sauce. The roll tasted more like a Chinese egg roll. Not horrible, but not what I expected for salmon skin roll. In a nutshell the place gets two stars out of five. I have tasted better elsewhere. If we were ever to return to Erie, I would try a different sushi place before I would come back to this restaurant again.

This place is average, but coming from the city where Japanese restaurants are aplenty, I've definitely had better. The sushi/sashimi dishes were well presented...but were definitely not fresh. I also had one of their chef's special rolls (which I forgot all of a sudden), and I found red peppers inside the roll. What the, that's not authentic! Apparently the red peppers replaced the tobiko/masago...an absolute no-no for me. I stopped by here on my way to Grove City, and quite frankly it was the only decent place around. Maybe I should search around more places next time I'm in the area.

Had been here several years ago and when they first opened and were happy. This time however we were not. First of all they refused to honor a gift certificate that we had purchased with the guarantee they would. Second of all the manager argued with us that what we had in front of us was not what it clearly stated it was. Thirdly, as soon as the waitress saw this we didn't see her again until the bill came. We weren't even rude yet he came back a second time to let us know how wrong we were. Very disappointed in the service for food that was ok. Like the other reviews said, you can go to Wegmans a block away and get at least the same food cheaper, faster, and without a rude service.

We keep going there almost every time we decide to eat out. Love their sushi bar! Kids choose their hibachi style dinner over any other place in town.
(5)darren l.
Surprisingly nice. Sushi was a bit pricey but the hibatchi was a great deal at under under $20 per entree for most items. Didn't care for the salad dressing, but mayo is my one major food aversion. This is about minutes north of I-90 and I would recommend.
(4)Aaron K.
Huge portions. They don't charge for fried rice. Super friendly staff (Michael and Ali Baba). But the steak is not good. I guess get the filet mignon.
(4)Michael H.
I have eaten Sushi all over the world, not Japan, and have never had better cuts of fish nor a better presentation than I get at Aoyama EVERY time!!!! Love it here and Young is the best Chef!!'
(5)chris m.
Good sushi. Always room at the counter. Sometimes has uni. Usually nice and fresh with ice cold sapporo wonderful.
(3)Bentley M.
Place is great! I go there about twice a week and the staff are friendly and prompt. Hong the dining room server is the best, always came by and asked how things were and didn't really have to wait long for anything. Will definitely recommend to everyone!!

We took a quick trip out to Erie, PA and this was the only establishment we visited during our short time here. The space of the interior is fairly enormous and spacious; there is a separate dining area for hibachi and non-hibachi. There is ample parking as well. Anyways, on to the actual food. When we usually frequent a Japanese restaurant that offers sushi, I like to order one of the larger assortments of sushi and/or sashimi. Our server was very amicable but he clearly wasn't educated in Japanese cuisine at all; I had to very clearly explain to him that "sushi rice" isn't the same as "regular rice" which I thought was a bit odd. When the sashimi assortment finally came, we noticed that some of the slabs of fish were incredibly cold, I'm talking ICE cold. I would say that the texture of a certain piece of white fish was almost like biting into a solidified slushie. The pieces themselves were fairly large and plentiful; but that doesn't excuse the fact that some pieces were nearly frozen when served. Also, the octopus (tako) had noticeable thawed water remaining on the pieces. My opinion is that the quality control is quite low at the sushi bar, and the sushi was very disappointing. So the lessons learned here, do not order sushi at an establishment that doesn't care about quality control of their fish products.

I love hibachi, and this place has the best fried rice ever. It is accompanied by this great sauce that I have never had anywhere else. Truly unique, and my food is always cooked to perfection. The scallops and filet are my go to for hibachi, but you can't really go wrong on the hibachi menu!
(5)Dion S.
SERVICE Service was great. Our server Eddie was accommodating to our needs and experience. FOOD The Sashimi Deluxe is well presented and tasted great. DESSERT I just got a normal Vanilla Ice Cream dessert which was quite generous in the servicing size. Perfect for post meal.

I have eaten Sushi all over the world. I can sincerely say Chef Young at Aoyama delivers the freshest, highest quality, and authenticity of this Japanese cuisine to Erie, PA. I believe a restaurant is only as it as its chefs and Chef Young delivers an experience of enjoying sushi I can appreciate, and I will continue on following him where ever he goes.

My niece had her graduation dinner here. It was a party of 10. My first impression was that the restaurant was dirty. Food everywhere on the carpet and the counters at the hibachi table very sticky. I also don't like that the huge menus cover your eating plate. I had to wipe my area (and plate) off twice. Most of us got the combination hibachi. I ordered the steak and shrimp. The quality of meats and seafood is good and the server was quick and efficient but it was obvious they didn't want us hanging around as they kept peeking our way to see if we were done. She could have asked us if we or the graduate wanted dessert. When I ordered I asked if the rice and mixed vegetables was a generous portion and she assured me it was. Well, the mound of veg and rice looks impressive on the grill but by the time you're dividing it by 10 it's an INCREDIBLY STINGY portion. My niece sitting next to me didn't want her veg so I took hers. Rice and vegetables are not very expensive and the portions should be larger. ALSO, it doesn't make sense to me that the cook would sautee the veg last! So, he plates the meats first and by the time the veg is done the meats are cold..LOL. SO SILLY. I also ordered the spicy shrimp roll which was 2 pieces short of the serving but it was very good. I can't say that with the $50 I dropped for my lunch alone it was an experience that would make me want to return.

Ever love a place so much that after years of being away you find yourself afraid to return to it, for fear of disappointment? For fear that maybe the place isn't quite the slice of Heaven you recall so fondly? That's how I felt about Aoyama before my trip there last week, and, I'm happy to report, the food and bar experience was just as fantastic as I remember. A friend and I headed to Aoyama last Monday evening for drinks and food before heading downtown for the rest of the night. The place was inexplicably slammed when we arrived around 8PM. Slammed. Line out the door. The bar was packed full as well, but for some reason the few lounge seats/tables near the bar were unoccupied, so we set up shop there. For old time's sake we ordered the Spicy Lobster specialty roll. I'm a wuss when it comes to spice/heat, but the Spicy Lobster roll has a kick that I can (just barely) handle...until the last couple pieces cause my mouth to catch fire. Truly, it's the only thing that comes to mind that I'll eat knowing that there will inevitably be some pain involved. It's a delicious roll, and, FYI, Aoyama specialty rolls are considerably larger (piece-wise and volume-wise) than any specialty rolls I've had at other sushi joints anywhere. We also ordered a hibachi combo dinner (steak and chicken) to share, and, wow, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. Tons of moist steak and chicken piled high upon sizzling veggies such as broccoli and onions and carrots and more. Clear soup, rice (choice of white steamed or fried), and salad also came with this dish, and I thought it was really nice that the kitchen sent out separate salads even though while ordering my friend and I didn't explicitly state that we were sharing. Love you, Aoyama!

Best place ever! Young is an awesome sushi chef. Hong is always our server and takes great care of us! I can eat here everyday!
(5)Vidal D.
The goto spot for sushi and low key bar action. Haven't been here in a while, but it has been consistent and good in the past. Very spacious. Good atmosphere. Doubled as a pseudo night club....does it still? Haa
(5)Phil Q.
Is there no where for good sushi in Erie?.... Been here a few times hoping things would get better. Guess I'm just spoiled when it comes to sushi. Pricey and the sushi is not really good. The fish does not taste fresh and is warm..... Hibachi is just ok....
(2)Joe A.
I've never had a bad experience here. The prices are reasonable, the food is always great, and the entertainment at the hibachi never disappoints! Personally, I usually get the Sea & Land Hibachi Special (filet, chicken, and shrimp) and I've never had a complaint. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

"Where's the flavor?!" We kept asking one another when eating the udon soup! Both of our dishes were big bowl fulls of BLAH, each spoonful leaving us with less hope that the next slurp would turn the corner and actually possess a hint of some flavor! Patience... maybe the next one... NOPE! Half full bowls remained half way through a normal meal's duration. Plates of appetizers looked almost untouched. Waiters asked: Should I wrap it up for you? For the first time in my life, I said NO. Everything was BLAH! Maybe they were going for the neutrality of Zen- to find that one place neither where pleasure, nor dissatisfaction exists. If I didn't have to pay for the meal, I would have to say that they accomplished this balancing act. Anyhow, it was not just the udon, but even the shrimp tempora wasn't giving off too much flavor (nor did they provide the dilute soy sauce that a true Japanese joint would have)... in fact just about everything they decided to bread and fry (zucchini, sweet potato, and the shrimp) tasted pretty much exactly the same: fried, oily, a bit of texture, and "uh where's the flavor?" The only part of the meal I enjoyed was my beer, which came from a can. On top of that, our waiter was a bit of DB too. He wanted to be there about as much as I did after my half bowl of noodles. Can't blame him though. I'm thinking that some of the better ratings here are coming from people who haven't had much exposure to Japanese food outside of this area (no offense, but if you gave this place more than 3 stars, I doubt you have much to compare to, or you're just very easy to please, which in that case, kudos, good for you!). There is no way this place would survive is some of the larger cities (Philly and NYC come immediately to mind). All in all, I guess if you're looking for the trendy hibachi experience with a group of friends, this place is OK, but beyond such a novelty I don't think this place lives up to the hype. Average at best... Won't be back.
(2)Adam K.
The bar is decent if you just want a cocktail. Sushi and entrees were not very good you can get better sushi from the grocery store. I wouldn't come back.
(2)Lils N.
Okay. Let me first preface that I am very picky with sushi and I am from Philadelphia where there are many options for affordable, delicious sushi. Also, I didn't have their hibachi but ordered off the menu for other appetizers, entrees, etc. We ordered the appetizer steak and scallion sushi looking thing (like a steak roll with scallion in the middle), sushi and a salmon teriyaki dish. The steak and scallion thing was definitely weird. We saw the pictureo n the menu and though it was kinda cute and wanted to try it. The meat was okay, but the ratio of meat and scallion was definitely off. Too much scallion in the middle. It also sucks up all the sauce, making the middle like a little bomb of sauce. The sushi was nothing special at all. It wasn't particularly fresh, but who knows what's to be expected since this is Erie, PA. Coming from places like Philadelphia, LA or NYC, the quality of the sushi is definitely on the low-end. So if you're from any of those cities, visiting Erie, that would be how I would compare. Definitely a step above the sushi preparations at like...the supermarket though if it means anything. The salmon teriyaki was okay, average at best. We really didn't have any complaints about his dish, but it was not something that made go "wow." Then again, we kinda knew all this coming in, we just wanted some Japanese food and this was pretty much the only place around us at the time. The service was good, the people were nice. One complaint about the environment is that every so often there would be some screaming coming from the hibachi grill, like a ritual scream as the chef cooks. I dont really know what is up with that, maybe it's a thing at hibachi grills, but it was definitely annoying if you wanted to carry out conversation.
(2)Michael K.
It was good sushi for an afternoon lunch. Spoiled by living in Seattle, Washington and the selection of Japanese sushi.
(3)Erin B.
Love this place. The entertainment is always great, everyone's friendly, and very accommodating. At my most recent visit I ordered raw salmon and it came served over loose rice and I asked if they would pack it together for me and they kindly did and displaced the pieces of salmon over each rice ball. Very delicious sushi every visit. Can't go wrong with the spicy salmon roll or Alaska roll. And the hibachi meals are very tasty and big portions! Veggies, rice, soup, salad, and your meat choice. $13-40, depending on the meat.
(5)Yuki S.
Aoyama has a good fresh sushi.service is always satisfying.
(4)Amanda B.
I've been to many sushi restaurants in my day. This one is pretty good. I'm traveling to Erie for work so I didn't stay and appreciate the ambience... It does look like a great place to chill. It's a very spacious place. Very clean as well. I sat at the sushi bar and I was the only one sitting there on a Wednesday at 18:30. There were plenty of people in the rest of the restaurant, including the habachi tables. I was seated right away by the hostess. The two men behind the sushi bar were very polite, friendly and quick to take my order. I had the miso soup, which was fairly good. Nothing exciting (but in my opinion, it never is. It was cold out and I just wanted something to warm me up). I then ordered multiple pieces of sushi. It was very fresh and the perfect temperature. The sushi chef even through in an order of eel. Perfectly cooked. I was interested in some of the chef special rolls but they were fairly expensive at $15 a pop. I then noticed how HUGE they were... and they looked fantastic! I'll definitely be back here at least once in the next two weeks to try some more. Service was quick and friendly. In fact, multiple staff members wished me a good night on the way out.
