I've never eaten such disgusting food at a restaurant. I ordered the assorted seafood, and all of it was frozen fried seafood, including a square haddock patty that looked like it came from a school lunch tray. I couldn't even figure out what one piece was, but it was ice cold on the inside. The server volunteered to "microwave" it for me. Another restaurant employee instructed the server to, "Throw it in the microwave for about a minute and a half." No one seemed to acknowledge any food safety precautions: I was asked to scoop the item off my plate and into a bowl the server held so that she could go warm it up. From what I could tell, nearly nothing was homemade. Everything came out of a box or a can. I even heard the staff telling other customers that most of the food items were frozen: "The mashed potatoes are instant, but we doctor them up," and, "The yams are out of a can, but they're the same ones I make at home." When we spoke to a manager, he seemed astounded that I would have had a problem with anything that had occurred. He did take $4 off the $30+ bill, but treated me with very poor customer service. The one bright spot was the server, who was gracious and seemed to recognize how disgusting the food was and empathize with us. Robert Irvine needs to resurrect this place. I have no idea why it's still open.

Just had lunch after reading the previous review. The Cloister looks generic on the outside, but has genuine "retro" diner character inside. Definitely a locals' spot, but very welcoming. The food was honest, local, homemade and very good. Chicken corn rivel soup was fresh and delicious. So was the lunch special of smoked sausage with two sides (we chose chowchow and pepper cabbage). "Elva's" fresh peach pie was like a quarter of a pie, served with whipped cream. (My diet starts tomorrow!) We definitely would come back for lunch (or breakfast at the counter) when back in the area.

This place is stuck in the 1950s and not in a good way. Had no eggbeaters and no butter alternative. Floor was sticky. Food basically thrown on the plate. Awful. Just awful.

It sure depends what you order. Ask what is homemade at the restaurant. Corn pie delicious, homemade peach pie yummy. I will return again! Inside like a diner but that is what it is and clean. That is important.

This place is nothing special, but their breakfast is so good, and the prices are great. This is my go-to breakfast spot when I'm in town.

Ate there for the first time because I was told about their Corn Pie. It was great. Fresh, sweet corn made this a delicious meal. The gal who made them told us how they pick their own corn and walked us through her process. Four of us then shared a huge piece of her homemade peach pie. Nice, fresh local Lancaster County peaches. Will definitely go back and will always ask about what is homemade.
