Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This is my pit stop when I am going to the big Apple. It's perfect place to pull over from 81 and have a stretch or two and refill your calories.

Your classic canned food Mexican, just the type an American would think an American would want. Unfortunately that's not true. Very boring presentation on the plate of very boring food

This place does not even know what Green Chili Verde is. After educating the server and relaying back to the cook they got it. Food came out amazing and like anything you have to let them know what you want. I would come back. The Animal

Thought the food was very good. I got the Hawaiian fajitas which was not something I've ever had before and they were delicious. The presentation was also very nice since they brought the food out in a pineapple. My husband also enjoyed his chicken chimichanga. And they brought out fried ice cream since it was his birthday. The meal came out to about $30. Overall I'd say this was a great stop and would definitely recommend.

Went here for dinner tonight. Place was quiet. About 40% full at 8 pm. Staff was great and very attentive. Ordered Burrito Deluxe which was above average. Chips and cheese sauce were very good. Salsa was ok. Had a beer to top it off for $20.

I made a yelp account just so I could write a review of this restaurant and my experience there. Overall this is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. Here's why: 1. From the time we sat down to the time we got our food it was nearly an hour. 2. When we finally did get our food I can say with near certainty, as someone who has worked in the restaurant industry, that our food was prefrozen and microwaved. 3. Although this practice is normal throughout the industry, this food was terrible. The chicken in the enchiladas was dry and rubbery. Neither my girlfriend nor I could stomach more than one of the three soggy awful excuses for enchiladas that were provided at a cost not worth the quality of food. 4. We were genuinely disappointed that the "mexican" food we were craving couldn't be found at this restaurant. If you're in the area I suggest you keep driving. Even the Moe's just down the street has to be better than this place.

Good cheese dip. Beef and cheese enchiladas were better than most though chicken was average. Definitely would pass by again when in town. Food was fresh.

The food is really good, but I like the salsa and guacamole much better at the Dickson City location. It is convenient, because it's in my town, so I go there from time to time.

Avoid at all costs. To start, no toilet paper in the bathrooms, one soap dispenser empty, one sink broken. Took 15 minutes to be visited by our waitress. Thirty minutes for nachos and a soft taco? Get real. Nachos were burnt and mediocre. Keep driving.

Love Mexican food. Friendly staff. And they always have soccer on the TVs at the bar. Cant beat that!

A Saturday dinner search piqued our interest in this new place (to us). Tables topped with paintings and wonderful chair backs of relief scenes that are brightly painted. Good salsa for the four of us, rich in cilantro, plus, the usual chips. Fajita Picantes was a good, healthy choice for one of us, on a sizzling platter. Molcajete Mexicana shocked us with a hot caldron ("lava rock bowl") of marinated chicken, steak and chorizo (dryish), long-stalk onions, red pepper strips, avocado slices, with a tasty sauce in the bowl and tortillas on the side. It was a hit. A Combo Dinner $9.99 - choices - settled on 2 burritos = one chicken and one beef. Both open-ended and skimpy fillings, but decent tasting. Comes with their rice (with some carrot) and the typical refried beans. Finally, the Appetizer Sampler $9.99. 2 chicken quesadilla triangles, 3 big jalapeño poppers, both OK, but the pork taquitos and beef chimichangas were very skimpily-filled! A dish of creamy dip was OK. "Served with chips - NOT. Service was just OK in a nearly empty restaurant.

Very authentic atmosphere and food. Large menu with great selections. Extremely fresh and tasty food. Portions are just right. Convenient from I 81 if you are traveling.

With the amount of small authentic Mexican restaurants that we have in the area La Tonalteca is not where I would choose to go. The food anything but authentic. Since when is a hard shelled taco with ground beef authentic? It is overrated. Don't waste your money go to Garibaldi or Chicano's instead.

On our way back from Niagara Falls to NJ, we were craving for some comfort food. Pulled into this exit, planning to go to another Mexican chain restaurant as we were familiar with it. When we saw this restaurant, we thought of exploring. The service was very courteous. WE were very pleasantly surprised to see a special section for vegetarian options! The waitress explained the many new items on the menu and made recommendations too. Glad we went with it, because everything we orered was simply great!! From the salsa that accompanied the chips to the dessert, everything tasted fresh and delicious! We were chomping the food down like there was no tomorrow :). Wish they had it in NJ. Would have certainly frequented!!

You've probably been to many places like this. It's nothing too special, and more on the Tex-Mex side of things, but the food is fine and the iced tea comes in a huge cup. Only weird thing was my tamal came covered in enchilada sauce. Is that normal?

I walk into this restaurant last night (2/11/13) at 4:30 PM. I wanted to get some quick take out for home. I sat down and no one was at the bar. A waiter comes up to me after about 5 minutes and says he will be right with me. About 10 minutes go by and he comes back. I ask for a margarita and a menu and tell him I would like to order quickly. He says he will be right back. Never comes back. At 5PM a bartender comes on duty. He is very personable and I ask him if I can place an order. He apologizes for the delay and he calls the same waiter over who vanished earlier. He take my order and is on his way. About 15 minutes later the food comes so quick form the time of order to it coming out. A front counter girl comes up to me with the bill and I give her my credit card. She comes back and it is not my bill, there are extra items on it. I point this out and she says she will correct and come right back. A minimum 10 minutes goes by and shes no where to be seen. I walk up to the front counter and ask where my bill is and three people are standing there including my waiter acting like they are out of it. I got fed up and said bill me whatever you want and left. I checked my credit card today and no surprise, they charged me for the whole bill. This place is understaffed, management no where to be found and is a waste of time. Go elsewhere.

I've eaten there three times. Great food and ambiance. But the waiters act like they are stoned. They are nothing like the staff at the dickson city location. If you want to be treated well, take the extra five minutes and drive to the other restaurant.

Completely disagree with the other negative reviews. Good tex-mex joint, everything was fresh and delicious. The servers were very nice and everything was very quick. Also, it wasn't on the menu, but I had the best michelada I've ever had! (and I drink a ton of micheladas/bloody marys)

The second La Tonalteca location in the Scranton area is very similar to the first. Strangely, these two virtually identical full service restaurants are just 3 miles apart. The service at this location was especially poor (not unfriendly, just bad) and the food was on par with the other location: edible but hardly "authentic." That is a term often thrown around when it comes to ethnic cuisine, but don't be fooled. There is certainly no qualifier for the use of the term. The best Mexican food I've had always seems to come from a small house in a neighborhood with an obviously closely knit staff. Certainly not the case here. Upon arrival we witnessed a conversation about scheduling between the hostess and a sever that should have ended when we opened the front door, but lasted about 30 seconds beyond that. The short wait wasn't an issue, but rather a total absence of acknowledgment. Had they communicated with (or even looked at) us, they would have learned that we intended to dine outside rather than silently leading us to an indoor table. The patio at this former Bennigan's is quite small, with a capacity of perhaps 20 and a view of a busy commercial corridor. Likewise, the other location offers a panoramic view of Sears. At least the decor is more festive than Bennigan's (and the short-lived Charlie's which possessed zero ambiance). We took our seats and were presented with menus, chips and salsa. The salsa is pretty thin and not very spicy (3 on a spicy scale of 10), chips were fresh. The menu has changed a bit and the beverage page now includes the Brazilian caipirinha. I excitedly ordered one while my companions chose beer. After ten or fifteen minutes, an orange colored drink with mint was placed in front of me and the server walked away. Uhhh. I didn't touch it and a few moments later two servers came out, informed me of their error, removed the drink and delivered it to another table. You never do that - ever. The server then attempted to clarify with me what a caipirinha was. Really? It's on your menu - it's not a complicated drink and your bartender should know how to make what's on the menu. At that point, for the sake of avoiding further confusion, I decided to order whatever had been placed in front of me in error. It turned out to be a passion fruit mojito and it was great. Foodwise, we chose the crab nachos, chorizo quesadilla, chimichangas and enchiladas. The nachos arrived and we had no silverware or napkins. We requested napkins earlier for a salsa spill and they were not delivered. The menu claims lump crab for the nachos, but we surmised Fancy Feast. It is not lump and is certainly from a can (watery, mushy and greyish looking). The other items arrived perhaps two minutes after the nachos; "do you guys have silverware?" Gee, thanks for noticing, and thanks for giving us sufficient time to eat our appetizer. My quesadilla was very heavy and oozing grease. It's a Mexican grilled cheese - not hard to make. I make a much better one. Ruby Tuesday makes a much better one. This was what Napoleon Dynamite's grandmother would have made. The chorizo was ground and in the spirit of the crab comment my mouth blurted "Alpo!" since it shared the appearance, texture and smell. It wasn't spicy like I'd expect chorizo to be. The other dishes appeared to be adequate. The guacamole served on each plate, though plain and of unusually thin consistency, seemed quite fresh. If you value convenience, tequila selection and just want a bland, greasy plate of cheese and beans, this might be your place. For those who actually crave authenticity, I recommend Garibaldi in West Scranton (byob) and Italo's in South Scranton (full bar), which blow this Wonder Bread suburban faux Mexican garbage out of the agua.
