For some reason, Murray's cant seem to get out of Hymies shadow, like the forgotten step child.... Almost every review here either mentions Hymies or compares it to Hymies in some way, and here I am doing it too! But I guess with two Jewish deli's so close together, that is bound to happen. My family and I recently dined at Murray's after being told there was quite a long wait at Hymies (the only reason we have ever come here). I was shocked to find that once at Murrays there restaurant was at least halfway empty, yet people were waiting forever across the street... it made me think "why isn't Murrays at least getting Hymies over flow????" Anyway - I can't explain it. Maybe its that the parking is a bit harder, the smaller size scares people off, or its simply not as visible? I really don't know. The food is excellent, the coffee is delicious, and the service is just as "good" as at Hymies. The breakfast potatoes are sooo good! So is all of the deli meat, and the matzo ball soup! I will start frequenting Murrays more often, and not just as a back up.

The bomb! This is a bonafied Jewish deli. I love it here great food friendly staff. Just remember its cash only!

Feeling flush with success at finding good breakfast on Christmas day at nearby Hymies, the merry band of hungry people set off to experience breakfast at the 'other' Jewish deli in Bala - Murray's Delicatessen, just a1/2 block away, this time New Year's Day (it's a holiday theme). Murray's has a similar setup, half deli, half restaurant, though the dining area is noticeably smaller than that of Hymie's. The decor is also more retro-20's and 30's with some beautiful stained glass and tin. Smaller meant that 6 of us could not fit at a booth, so a 2 top table was added to the end of our booth. It also meant that other patrons had to walk in a zig zag pattern to get around us. Again, we were a mixed order - some with breakfast, some with lunch. One everything bagel with lox (seriously? So not challenging), one mushroom omlette with tomato side, one french toast. One hot dog, one "Texas Tommy" (hot dog stuffed with cheese then wrapped in bacon) and one turkey club. All were....well, just OK. Bland. The turkey club was 98% turkey, and so huge it had to be deconstructed to eat, but for all the meat, there really wasn't a lot of taste to it (and it was ordered with mayo). Next time they should think about less meat (so jaws do not need to be unhinged to eat) and more flavor. French toast was also just 'meh', not nearly the flavor you'd expect from challah bread. Texas Tommy was not loved -bacon was in that chewy not really cooked state that only some love. Fries were not battered but also lacked any kind of flavor. If I had to put one word to the meal it would be "bland". Service was reasonably efficient and friendly, and the place was clean. We may go back at some point but we were generally so not-impressed it wouldn't be an enthusiastic decision. One nice note - free parking behind the restaurant, accessed by an alley next to Aldair (next-door restaurant).

My favorite Jewish hoagie on earth resides at Murray's! Service is slow, but we'll worth it.

I stopped in for lunch with a couple of others. There were plenty of tables on this Friday but they started to fill up after one o'clock. This is a old style deli that reminded me of the Famous 4th St. Deli in Queen Village before it went Hollywood. I've had a lot of takeout from here but this is the first time I've had the chance to eat in. I had a extra lean corned beef special. The sandwich was extra large with thinly sliced, tender and flavorful corned beef on fresh rye. My dining partners went for the pastrami, also very good, served hot and on grilled rye - the Ruben with sauerkraut. We couldn't leave without having a bagel with Nova lox. We split that three ways. Great bagel, fresh and lightly toasted. Nova was great as well. Food - excellent. Service was casual, friendly, quirky, but attentive. The tables and eating area were immaculate. Great experience.

You know that I love ya, Murray. It's been 2 long years since we saw one another. Your matzso ball soup--slammin' as ever. Your sammies--still large and lovely; adore the delicate rye bread you use. Your Jewish apple cake--moist and delish. It's an authentic old-school deli that remains fiesty. I find the pictures of the Babe and Bogie and Gable nostalgic. Murray--you help put the shine on the main line.

Friendly service, had the murrays delight, seems that the pastrami was cooked way too much, like eating beef pastrami bacon. I've had their pastrami before and enjoyed it very much. I guess I would recommend that you order your pastrami cold.

The dating is and look is part of the experience. I have been coming here for forty + years and nothing has changed. Nothing is different. The food is consistent as to what you are eating and overstuffed sandwiches. Cholesterol laden food, but that is what we have been eating since we were kids. Can do this a few times a year, but is the real deal and authentic. Kasha, Kishka great soups. Hymies and its earlier sister restaurants from the day were never as good as Murrays. People are funny, you couldn't get me into Hymies.

  • Mary B.

Hymies is worth the wait! Service terrible at Murray's. At least 2 other tables rec'd their food before us in spite of us being seated at least 10 min earlier. The only thing they had to cook was rye toast and a bagel - and they were only toasted! Not going back!

  • Ames M.

BEST COFFEE EVER. The service was great, they even got me a to go cup. The restaurant was clean. The challah French toast was delicious and the price was right. What a deal. The previous reviews scared me but this is a good diner.

I just had the absolute worst experience. Sat down at 12 pm, at 12:15 a waitress finally approaches us to take out order. We ordered two coffees. water. latkes, lox platter, and pastrami sandwich. At 12:50, our waitress told us the food was on the way. At 1:10 the food showed up without the latkes. Latkes arrive at 1:20. We asked for drink refills and she never returned. The hostess had to bring us the drinks. Why did we have to wait so long for a bagel and sandwich? Why did the latkes not come out first? Why didn't she ever apologize or let us know there was a long wait? Waiting outside at Hymie's is 100% worth it compared to eating somewhere with the absolute worst service.

Murray's is a classic deli with a side for deli ordering and a side for the restaurant. It can get busy but we've never had a long wait. Breakfast is delicious. My husband likes the pastrami and eggs and I go for a simple scramble. The bagels are real, chewy bagels, not bagel-shaped bread like some places. We have been here several times and the food is consistently good and service is always pleasant. The restroom, though very tiny (would be hard to bring a child in with you), is immaculate. Overall, the best deli in the area.

  • Martha M.

Murray's Deli is just that...your typical delicatessen. It serves as both a restaurant and an actual take out deli. The restaurant section leaves something to be desired with the decor from the 60s. But the staff is pretty friendly and the service is fast. They have a great selection of sandwiches and their breakfast selection is not too bad either. I just wouldn't go there for dinner as their dinner selections are a bit sparse and the capacity within the dining room leaves something to be desired. Overall just a great sandwich spot.

Murray's is a quant jewish STYLE deli (not kosher). It has a small homey feel and everyone is very nice and you can tell they seem like a ltitle family there. You definitely get your moneys worth with portions and the food is always fresh and well put together. The servers are always on top of things as it is such a small place. Matzo ball soup and any sandwich is always a good choice for eating here!!!

  • Bill E.

Maybe I shoulda stayed and had food, but we got stuff to go and it was awesome. I've never had LOX so smoky and oily and rich as I did here! we got beef tongue, smoked whitefish, bagels... good shit. I'd go back here again!

  • Ryan C.

This is really a 3.5 star but I thought I would be generous. The deli's a nice deli... not much to talk about there. The dining area in theory is well executed. The tables and decor set up is elegant enough for what I would consider a fine dining meal. The drawback is that the walls have a weird color scheme that simply isn't appealing. The place is like a pretty girlfriend who for some reason is not photogenic so you never tag her in your photos on facebook... but whenever you friends see her in person they're like "dude she's hot".

i grew up 4 blocks from murray's and it has been a fixture in my life for as long as i can remember. murray's is the kind of deli you can only find in places like philly, new york, and other east coast jewish enclaves. on one side you have all the meats and fishes: turkey, salami, whitefish, lox, all freshly sliced any way you want it, along with the pickles soaking in barrels (where else do you see that?) and the most delicious poppy homentashn you could ever have. and on the other side is the restaurant. best corned beef and turkey specials in philadelphia, hands down. lox, eggs, and onions with steak fries, a dr. brown's, and toasted everything bagel with cream cheese. this is eatling.

  • Delicious B.

I also grew up 4 blocks from Murray's. 40 odd years ago, it was a decent spot. It has not aged well. The only thing consistent about it is the surly service. Especially behind the deli counter. Overpriced and overrated, imho. Same deal with Hymie's.

  • Leo D.

This was my go to place because of convenience until I witnessed the owner accosting a customer over a parking spot. Other negatives over the past year include food poisoning after eating a Rueben and multiple take out orders not fulfilled properly. But the final straw was watching the owner in action. But he did me a favor because I went to Hymies for the first time - and Hymies is a much CLEANER and BETTER version of what a Jewish deli should be. Wish I had tried them years ago. Between Hymies and the new Dairy Cafe, I am officially done with Murray's!

So I found this gem using Yelp mobile "near me" when searching for a place to eat near our hotel. I would've never tried or found this place otherwise.. Thanks Yelp Universe:) This place was Kosher to the extreme The Fonz would've loved this place. So we ordered a Murray's special and a Ruben. (see the photo I uploaded) Both sandwiches were incredible! The bread was grilled to perfections, there was a good amount of meat. Not overly insane like the New York style deli's but I think that the secret was the Russian dressing on the both of them. Anyhow they both were some of the best that I've had to date... I doubt I'll ever be in the neighborhood to enjoy this wonderful kosher concoctions again.

This place has a deli side and a restaurant side. For this review I'm critiquing the restaurant. Over the last three years I've visited several times both for breakfast and lunch. There hasn't been a remodel here in decades. The atmosphere is 60's or 70's and it's a little beat up. Some people might call it homey but that's a stretch. One other note; it's generally clean. The wait staff is just fine. Usually friendly and competent. Often I feel like I'm being served by my mother and that's not a bad thing. Now for the food. This is a three star place. Everything is hot and fresh. Portions are at least average and often large. Its three stars because when I walk out I never say "Wow that was great!" However I do say "Ahhhh that was good!"

Not good value for money... Food was ok (not terrible, not great). Service was almost ok, but not quite. My bagel and lox sandwhich was solid (but with issues), my son's French Toast was ok. I would have liked a more generous serving of cream cheese -- i used it all, no offer to refill. Gave me a ton of lettuce -- kind of stupid, does anyone really eat that much lettuce with a bagel? Tomato was great! Cucumber had seen better days. No sliced onion (really?), no capers... The French toast was ok, a bit sloppy with egg and a bit mushy. It was served with cheap syrup (really? you charge a premium price for the french toast and it comes with super cheap syrup?). Bacon side was a bit skimpy and was jammed up with the french toast like the cook really didn't care. Coffee was ok, not particularly hot or flavorfull. My coffee cup was overfilled, it had sloshed around (server?) and there was 1/4" coffee floating around in the saucer -- i had to use my only napkin to clean it up -- it was as if the server didn't care... No offer to refill coffee, not once, not ever... No offer to get me a clean napkin (mine was soaked with the coffee that she spilled...) I had to steal a napkin off of another table -- embarrassing. Prices were too high. I have paid way more for breakfast and have been thrilled to do it,, but, this was just plain too high for that level of atmosphere, service and quality. Not good value for money.

Disclaimers... I had been here years ago, just hadn't been back in recent years. Reason I hadn't been back here is that I discovered that I really like Hymie's. I am a Hymie's fan for sure. But, being up in this area recently, I actually thought to myself that I couldn't say for sure whether Hymie's was truly better unless I gave Murray's another shot. Plus, I really wanted to Yelp the place, and I couldn't do it properly without a recent visit. Yet another way that Yelp influences my dining choices. So for once, and in the interest of fairness, I bypassed Hymie's one time for Murray's. I went there at 6:15 pm on a Thursday, and it was empty. Well, maybe the usual dinner crowd was later arriving. A couple of people did come in after 6:30, but again no problem getting a seat or quick service. The matzoh ball soup was simply two matzoh balls in broth. No additional ingredients. It tasted nice, but not special. The turkey special was piled nice and high with some decently sliced turkey and the usual dressing and cole slaw. The scoop of potato salad it came with wasn't bad. But neither item had any special flavor. It was good, it was filling, but I didn't have any "Oh wow" feeling to what I ate. I hate to say this, but I can go to Hymie's and get fresher turkey on my sandwich. Maybe the biggest sin of them all... the pickle that came with it was subpar at best. To be fair, I'm not a pickle guy in general. But I do know the difference between a good pickle and a not so good one. This one was nothing much to write home about, soggy with little flavor or crunch. Jewish delis are known for good pickles. It's part of the experience. When the competition across the street is giving you much better pickle choices (on a serve yourself pickle bar to boot) perhaps you should be willing to upgrade your product in this area. This may be a small thing to many, but I consider that a noticeable slip that is a general indicator of a lack of concern about your quality. Even worse, it tells me that the management of Murray's just doesn't give a damn. You know what, when it really comes down to it, it is just not a fair comparison. Hymie's just does so much more for the dining experience in general that Murray's is just over matched. Hymie's is more spacious, the decor is more pleasing, they have the pickle bar, they have a more expansive menu that's more pleasing to the eye, the deli and bakery are far more stocked, and in general the food seems to taste fresher at Hymie's. I'm sorry to write part of my review here on how good Hymie's is compared to Murray's, but when you are located within a block of each other, you have to expect such comparisons, and you really must raise your game just to compete. It is clear to me that Murray's is unwilling to raise their game and that is a shame because they do some good things. I mean, every time I'm up here, it just seems that Hymie's is more crowded, and it seems that more people are reviewing Hymie's here than Murray's. That should tell you something. I gave you another chance, Murray's. But I can honestly say it was your last chance with me. Why would I come here when I can do better within a block?

I'm a sandwich guy. I love sandwiches, especially ruebens, so I took my first visit to Murray's a few days ago. The pastrami rueben is ***fantastic.*** I think it's better than Hymie's. This is a controversial opinion, so I took my friend the very next day to see what she thought. She agreed, it's better than Hymies. I'm giving 5 stars for the rueben. I have no idea what their other food is like. Dont get the cheese fries, they're gross. Its a plate of fries with some kraft singles microwaved on top. Despite this, I will be going there at least once a week for the rest of my life for the rueben alone.

I went online this morning to place an order for delivery, I followed all the steps and had no problem with it all going through. An hour later (when it was supposed to be delivered) we got a phone call from a rather rude staff member saying they were not going to deliver to us because we are out of their radius. He was accusatory that it was something we did, as if we were cheating the system. It was a very uncomfortable conversation. There was no apology or attempt at accommodating something that was clearly an honest mistake. I definitely will not be going there now, knowing how rudely they handled a very small issue.

HOLY MOTHER MARY DE DIOS! I've found the holy grail and it's a sandwich! In the small town of Bala Cynwyd, PA there is a little deli. A little deli with HUGE taste!!! Cheese steak - Pretty good...cheese to meat ratio was on point and had a nice texture and flavor throughout. Great comfort food. Murrays delight: Hot Roumanian Pastrami - Russian dressing, melted swiss and sauerkraut - This bad boy was flavor filled, almost as good as the Ruben, but not quite. Ruben: Hot corned beef, Russian dressing, melted swiss and sauerkraut - Best sandwich EVER (for me). All the ingredients join together and do some crazy voo doo on every taste bud on your tongue. That's the only way I can do it justice...nuff said. I've been alive a long time and have found sustenance between two pieces of bread a large percent of my life. I know a good sandwich when I see/eat one. Murray's possesses the best sandwich I've ate to date. YEAH I SAID IT! Now drop in and prove me wrong.

Murray's and Hymies are the two Jewish staples on the Main Line. Overall, Hymies is probably better, but Murrays has a few great dishes: - Murray's delight - toasted pastrami ruben - Hot brisket sandwich - Murray's special - cold corned beef sandwich Stick with any of these and you'll leave satisfied. I've heard some of the other dishes can be hit or miss, but the ones listed above are top notch.

  • Steven C.

I can see why the pastrami / corned beef / roast beef connoisseurs may agree that Murray's meat is better in quality than Hymies. I ordered the Murray's Delight and I was indeed delighted with the pastrami, coleslaw, and especially the toasty bread. It was $10.25 which is now comparable with Hymies deli sandwiches which are just about the same price but Murray's lacks a full fledged pickle bar. As a college student, I like to get every bang for my buck so I enjoy going to Hymies for exactly that, the pickle bar, in addition to the good sandwiches. Nonetheless, Murray's is great at their deli sandwhiches.

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! THE BEST AUTHENTIC JEWISH FOOD IN PA. IF YOU WANT BETTER YOU WILL HAVE TO GO TO NEW YORK! The food was great, the place was clean, the decor was a little out dated but this place is a fixture on the main line and the people who come here are second or even third generation diners so they would be upset to lose the familiarity of the place. The staff was terrific even during rush my waitress made us feel comfortable, she was relaxed and got our order in a record amount of time, I highly recommend that you check this place out. You will fall in love.

was very excited to eat here because there are alot of reviews on the internet about how "great" they are. I had the Murray's special and it wasnt special at all.Ive eaten at thousands of restaurants and this hardly makes my list of good ones service was good but there were only 3 people eating at the time

The food is good. Not good for you, but that's probably why it tastes awesome. Murray's is your stereotypical Jewish deli/diner combo. Our waitress was lacking though. We had to ask for refills on our drinks as none were offered. Here is what lost me as a potential return customer: the parking lot is in the back, and you have to walk around the building to enter from the front. When it came time to pay, it was raining. I don't mean a little mist, we're talking a deluge that would have floated the Philadelphia Zoo away, had the zoo been in a giant wooden boat. The water we would have to walk through to get to the parking lot was running 2 inches deep, all the way. My husband asked if we could go out the back door to avoid having to walk all the way around the building. No. The back door is for employees only. We were completely soaked when we got to the car, with a 3 hour drive home ahead of us. General courtesy and service aside though, the food really is good. Based on the food alone, I give it 3 stars. Had they tried a little harder to actually go out of their way to make their customers happy, I probably would have given them four stars. But they didn't.

When the place was sold 2 yrs ago, I was anticipating an upgrade in the food at Murray's - instead I have to give it a deep downgrade. Stay away! Since the new owners took over, the place has not been good - not that it was anything special before they purchased it. However, now it's worse. The owner behind the deli counter is not pleasant or accommodating. The menu is extensive like any normal jewish deli, but the food is below average - especially for the high prices. You're better off crossing the street and going to Hymies which is always decent.

Boo.........BOO.............TRIPLE BOO!!!!!!!! Wow, in a neighborhood drowning in the chosen you'd think that a deli would be amazing no? NO! its not, its terrible. Also, its really over priced. I ordered the classic, a bagel with lox and cream cheese with a cup of matzoh ball soup. TERROR, RUN!!!! wow......Seeing as it was the same price as The Second Ave Deli this caused me incredible amounts of anxiety and anger. For those who might be thinking , whats The Second Ave Deli ? Its a deli in Manhattan and its literally mecca for deli in this country as far as Im concerned. When I pray ( I never pray ) I point myself in the direction of 33rd and Lex and I pray. Its that good. Now let's get back to Murrays. It's really bad. Embarrassingly bad considering they just renovated. You'd think they'd change the food and step it up a notch to pay for all those new tables and chairs and the fixin' up. Well, they didn't Extreme Fail. Epic Fail. Fail to the 5th power. Pass go , Do not collect $200.

I was very excited when the Wakim family, of Al Dar next door, bought Murray's. I thought and hoped that it would bring a burst of adreneline into neighborhood staple. At least for breakfast, I was underwhelmed. I ordered scrambled eggs with potatos and toast. The eggs were overcooked and the potatos the opposite. Raw onion and underdone potatos. I will return and hope for better.

Not bad - but better off getting your sandwiches from someone that cares. Such as American Family Market just up the road in Narberth. Granted, AFM is a grocer, not a restaurant.

Not many places offer breakfast midweek so mom and I were happy to go to Murray's since brunch is her favorite meal. Our server was about average. Neither friendly nor standoffish. Neither prompt nor slow. The order came out just as we had requested. She got two eggs (over medium) and ham with homefries and wheat toast. I got an eggwhite omelet with mushrooms, homefries and wheat toast. Tea for her, water for me. Mom's first complaint was that the water for the tea hadn't been boiled. As a Scot who's been drinking tea several times daily all her life, she knows these things. Microwaved hot water causes weird white scum-looking stuff to form on the surface. And the mug was really hot. Honestly, just boil the damn water. Ham and eggs were okay. The toast has been toasted (very good). Our differences happen over the homefries. She likes hers all crispy. I like mine less charred. Murray's does it my way. Unfortunately, they were super salty so neither of us were crazy about them. My omelet wasn't anything to write home about. It was kind of oily, fairly tasteless (my fault for ordering an eggwhite omelet, i guess), and the mushrooms were canned, not fresh. If you enjoy mushrooms, you know that there's a huge taste difference in fresh vs. canned mushrooms. Disappointing experience overall. My mom has been putting up with my requests to try new places in the area so that she can get her brunch fix, but if this keeps up, she'll be dragging me to IHOP soon enough. Price: $19 + tip

Let me start by saying I've been loyal to Murray's for years. Always the go-to convenient spot for an easy breakfast or a great sandwich. Sure, their specialties are great, but their breakfast has always been fair. I think my visit today will be the last one for a while. Their latest price increase is off the wall. Their prices don't make sense anymore. For example, pancakes are 6.99. Pancakes with a few strips of bacon are 9.99. Three dollars extra for bacon? A whitefish salad on a bagel sandwich is now up to 10.99. This is robbery, especially since their quality is nothing extraordinary. Go over to City Line Deli at City and Haverford and get the same quality whitefish sandwich for 6.95. I had been pretty impressed with the way the Wakims were maintaining the quality of the restaurant, but today, after pulling the older Wakim father aside and asking why adding bacon to a breakfast platter was an extra $3, I heard his whole pitch about how "bacon prices are rising through the roof," and "how the staff demands a raise, and what is he supposed to do..." It seemed like it wasn't the first time he had went through this "pitch." I know costs are up, but do me a favor... Regardless, as much as I've loved my visits (sometimes weekly) to Murray's over the years, I'm done for now. PS. A cup of coffee now costs 2.05 there.
