This family run hot dog restaurant has old fashioned charm and makes a nice stop on a road trip - clean and efficient and a welcome change from Mickie D. Mac and cheese with chile is pretty good, ask for extra sauce. There is a selection of toppings for hot dogs. Root beer in a barrel is Highs and goes well with your dogs.

Some places are just traditional to go to when you're in Altoona. Texas Hot Dogs is the prime example of this! Being open for three generations is amazing enough but somehow managing to mantain the same distinct flavor and atmosphere is really what makes it a key attraction. Plus being able to serve four people in less than twenty minutes and for under twenty bucks, it's an amazing place to grab a quick, awesome quality lunch without breaking the bank!

Four stars for being cheap and good. Quaint little place, very old fashioned like the lunch counters from 30+ years ago. Love it for that. Cheese fries like I used to eat every day in my high school cafeteria. The guys enjoyed their hotdogs. And President Obama ate here...can you beat that?! To address what other reviewers stated, this place was not grimey and I witnessed the waitress using gloves and washing hands. This place is just old fashioned which I think is charming.

It's all fun and games until somebody loses a weiner! Before we even talk about the hot dogs, you have to respect the tradition of Texas Weiners. A family owned business for almost 100 years has to be doing something right. One of those things is root beer and birch beer out of a barrel, poured into a cup with those tiny pieces of ice. So refreshing. And a great compliment to a classic everything dog and the mac n cheese with chili sauce which I ate until I was almost sick. Friendly neighborhood service. You can tell there is a mix of your locals/regulars and tourists (like I was this first time) just in town for a visit. And everyone is treated the same. Great place for a cheap dog. I made a point of stopping here before a Curve baseball game instead of getting a dog at the park. Definitely worth it.

I can't believe noone has written this place up yet! Of the 3 Texas hot dog stands in the area, this is the original and the best. To show you how right this place gets it, they've been in business at this location since 1918. Nearly 100 years of doggie perfection! I remember coming in to this location as a small boy when I'd visit Altoona to see my grandparents. Coming in now is a blast of nostalgia, but the food never disappoints as it so often does when being eaten out of distant memories. When you go in, make sure to order your dogs with "everything". Everything in this case is brown mustard, their proprietary chili sauce and onions on a grilled dog in a steamed bun. Other menu highlights: Mac and cheese with chili sauce and gravy fries.

Great food at a great price.. The root beer was awesome only 1.55 for a hot dog

Not sure what all the hubbub is about this place. We were very disappointed after hearing how great this place was.

Cheap, yes. Shocking service and not in a good way. Items are pre-frozen then fried (fries, cheese balls, mushrooms). Floors under tables are filthy. Frozen Fries kept under the fryer and waitress serving food also handles the fries BARE handed!!! Not only that, I watched her break a chicken tender in half to check that it was cooked, then place it back in the basket to serve, still bare handed. Cooked fries being placed in basket also touched bare handed. Disgusting. I saw this midway while eating my hotdog...lost appetite and we left. Not sure how this place remains in business, but from seeing the types of people during our experience, don't think anyone was concerned about cleanliness. Gross.

Don't expect fancy, but you can expect the best chili dogs on the planet. Order them with everything and add a pint of chocolate milk for maximum effect. A local institution!
