Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The food was good, the prices were on par with other restaurants in the area ($9-$12 an entree), and the service was good. A good place to go if you're craving sit-down mexican restaurant food in Altoona.

This was a decant Mexican place. When you walk in your greeted by the host and the sounds of Mexico playing over the speakers. Once seated your presented with chips and salsa. The chips are fresh, warm, and crispy like they should be. The salsa is also fresh and chunky. Great restaurant style salsa. They have a few beer on tap, dos equis being the only Mexican beer is what I ordered. Lots of other Mexican options on tap. For dinner I went with a shrimp and Chorizo platter that included rice and beans. The dish was very tasty, with really nice flavor combinations between the shrimp and chorizo. This dish is outside of what I would normally order and I'm glad I did because I'd order it again. In fact I'll be back to this place, although a bit pricy ($30 for an entree and two beers) it was a good experience.

Nothing to write home to Momma about. The food was okay and the service was okay. I wasn't that impressed to be honest. Wasn't bad, but wasn't great.

Great food at a great price!! Was less then twenty bucks for two adult dinners. We went in late and the server was attentive and was extremely fast. Great tasting food. I would highly recommend this place!!!

Really slow service. Took at least half an hour to get my dinner. When the waiter cleared my dishes, he disappeared for a long time before bringing the check. The chips tasted like they were cooked in old oil. The shrimp and chorizo was pretty good. But 1-1/2 hours for a dinner for one - even though I'm kind of a slow eater is a bit much. They didn't seem real busy. I also had a hard time getting the waiter to understand my request for red wine until I threw in a bit of Spanish.

This place is decent if you want traditional Mexican food and not that taco bell crap. Great margaritas and food was great. They even have fried ice cream!!! The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I felt like their decor was kind of lacking in fiesta style. Overall it was a nice place to have dinner

Nice little local Mexican place with great prices. I was there for the huge $3.99 margaritas and my 3 chicken soft tacos were only $6.95. Good food at a great value sums it up.

Right off the bat, this place has a couple of things going for it: first, it's not a chain, and second, it's open past 9 PM on weekends (really, Altoona?!). The atmosphere is nice- some cool designs painted on the walls, mostly booth seating. Comfortable, cozy, unassuming. The chips and salsa (free, of course) were a great start to the meal. I had the fish taco special, and it was one of the best Mexican dishes I've ever had. The salsa served with the tacos was smoky, spicy, and flavorful- no removing the pepper seeds and ribs. It was all in on this one, and the result is a nice bite that complements beautifully the cilantro-rich pico and (asadero?) cheese, which arrived on the side. The meal also came with rice and refried beans. Fiancé liked, but didn't love, his chicken taco salad. The staff is very friendly, and service is prompt. Our meals came out quickly, and our chips and salsa were replenished right away as we finished the first bowl. Note to patrons of Mexican restaurants everywhere: please don't attempt to speak Spanish to your server if you don't, you know, speak Spanish. And please don't blather in semi-Spanish, then turn to your companion and ask, "What did I say?" It's disrespectful to the staff, it makes you look ignorant, and it annoys the people at the next table.

I love this place and have been there on average once a week since it opened. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful. The drinks are large and delicious (I'm kind of addicted to their margaritas). The food is terrific! It's always fresh and tasty. The portions are large. The flavors are authentic, and remind me of Mexican home cooking - not the touristy stuff (I spent about a year living in Mexico). Go early and go often! For specific recommendations, try either the Fajita Burrito or Enchiladas Verdes (my own favourite). The salsa verde on the enchiladas is deliciously composed of tomatillos and lime with a punchy flavour. The spice isn't too bad for the average palate and they will spice it up to actual Mexican levels if you ask.

Wow this was amazing and what a deal! Delicious meal that i cant stop thinking about, i highly recommend it, especially for lunch cause of the lunch specials. I ordered steak fajitas and it was enormous, pretty much 2 meals in 1 . Great flavor and quality taste

My boyfriend and I ate here a couple of weeks ago, and we will eat there again. However, they gave me the wrong order. I ordered tacos de chorizo con papas. They brought me tacos de carnitas. They were good. But this ain't my first rodeo, and I know the difference between pork and chorizo. I didn't say anything to any of the servers, but I should have. I've seen too many movies where they do awful things to your food if you send it back. Hopefully someone reads this and doesn't let it happen again. I want to reiterate that we did enjoy the food, and the experience in general.

This is the best Mexican food by far in Altoona! Must try!!! Great service and food! Maragritas are the best! Prices are awesome! Free chips and salsa when you dine. Try the Chimichangas in beef or chicken (mmmm) and the queso cheese with your chips!!! Can't say enough about this place! They have a loyalty club I joined today if you text mex126 to 825725 they text coupons!!!

Margaritas arent great but the salsa is very good!

We stopped here for a late lunch. We liked the ambiance and the food was good quality Mexican fare. The salsa had a nice cilantro flavor to it. Kids liked the cheese dip but portion was small for ordering a large. Mom enjoyed the fajita burrito. I had a lunch burrito and taco, as did Andrew, and we both liked. Abby had chicken fajita burrito and said it was good.

On the road. Nice place. Excellent service, clean. Had enchilada rancheros. Chips and salsa top notch. Food came out quickly and hot. Well prepared and delicious. Will return if I'm ever back in the area.

I am a huge fan of authentic Mexican cuisine and I was really impressed with my meal. I ordered the Fajiats Texcanos (sp?). All of the ingredients were fresh and cooked right in the skillet with a sauce I can't really describe, but can guess that it was white wine and cheese which coated everything much to my enjoyment! I highly recommend you visit this place and visit often. I can't wait to come back here when visiting my friends, next time. Our service was amazing as well, we were in and out of there in around 35 minutes, with an appetizer as well.

Clean dining area and restrooms. Meals were delicious. Service was friendly and attentive.

We had dinner here one evening - we ordered sides of Guacamole and con queso to go with the chips and salsa they brought out. I ordered the Nachos Supremos. I asked for jalapeños and black olives to be added to the dish - I was assured they could do this. The Guac and con queso were rather ordinary. And so were the Nachos. And on top of it all - no jalapeños or black olives were added to the Nachos. I'd give this place another shot next time and perhaps try the Burritos or Fajitas instead. Service was good.

Had an early Saturday lunch at Montezuma last week, my family was generally disappointed, the service was a little slow for how empty it was. Somehow they were able to make an enchilada sauce that tastes exactly like Chef Boyardee beef ravioli.

Your average run of the mill chain Mexican restaurant. The food can vary at times from really good to just blah. I do enjoy the fajitas and you get a great portion. The homemadeTomatillo sauce is also very good. The service is very fast and you can usually escape out of here without paying an arm and leg for two people.

Best authentic mexican food in town, and most reasonable prices. My custom order is always correct.

Yum!!! So, for years I love love loved the El Campesino in Altoona. I don't know what happened to that place but it started going downhill. Montezuma's to the rescue! This restaurant is in the building that Ruby Tuesday's used to be. It's beautiful and CLEAN inside. Not once in the many times that I've dined here have I found it to be less than pristine. Even the bathroom is always clean! The staff is great too - seriously! I'm not sure who the guy was running the bar area the one night we closed up the place (yeaaaaah, a little too much drinky) but he's my fav. He made me THE best and biggest margarita I've ever had and didn't charge me an arm and a leg for it. He had a great sense of humor and took great care of our group. Yes, the drinks, they're delicious! They have lots of beer choices too, just ask! Now, the food. Ohhhh, this food is amazing. You get your standard chips and salsa for free but for an extra treat ask for the queso dip. Once, our waiter gave us some other kind of sauce/salsa and it was great, but I can't remember the name of it. I'll have to ask next time. My favorite dish is the mushroom quesadilla. But everything I have tried has been great so I doubt that you will be disappointed. Don't be afraid to grab a fried ice cream for everyone to share either. Now you guys just need a location near McKnight road! :D

Headed to Montezuma this past weekend for our third visit. I wanted to try it one more time before Yelping about it. Delicious food. I had the shrimp fajitas and the hubby had combo #3 with a shredded beef taco. Here are a few reasons we like this place: the heat is perfect....spicy but in undertones that are flavorful and not just hot. The service is great (the waiters always stop and chat/joke with us) and the portions are huge. I always eat part of my rice and beans and yet it looks like I've not touched them, there are so many leftovers. Only downside: they do serve too much food so I always go home a little overstuffed--but really, that's a personal problem. ;) Hope this helps you, fellow yelpers!
