Stopped in at 8 pm on a Monday 12/8, in the height of the holiday season. I was advised the kitchen was closed but bar still open. I ordered a glass of wine, and before I could take a few sips, they were shutting the lights off. Frankly I should have been told they were closing. I left the wine, which at $13 was vastly overpriced for the red I had. Since this management hasn't "gotten it" after 6 months of tepid crowds, sad reviews and an overall dismal dining experience, they can only hold out so long before they'll have to close their doors for good. But that will open an opportunity for a more capable operator to take over this quality location and building. Sad. It's like a repeat of the demise of the King George Inn, and quite possibly Youell's Oyster House. God - there is such an opportunity for inspired chefs in the affluent Lehigh Valley, but there's so much mediocrity that can't seem to resonate with the evolving tastes of their core market - and attract Millennials? Lost cause. Depressing.

Ellen The day of our reservation was highly anticipated. We (5) were seated near a window and proceeded to orderdrinks. Now tell me WHO asks the price of plain iced tea?? It arrived in a very large glass and cost $2.75.Iced tea is cheap to make but why give so much at one sitting. Oh yes ,the salad bar-the after thought. We the customers had to step aside for the servers to pass AND no spinach or balsamic vinegar on the bar. The add on of london broil which was flank steak was served on a salad plate and looked discusting. The chef could have sliced it with some lettuce under it for presentation. The penne was advertised with "roasted vegetables". NOT,a few tepid sauteed pieces of squash. The duck breast wast pitifuly small with 3 tiny roasted red potatoes DRY. Not too much longer please be patient. OH YES! the coffee.5 ounce cups of mediocure coffee for $2.50 each. Now we sat in a room where the bar is. Dull and nothing to relate to.The other dining room is even duller with plain brown paneling. We had a bench and three chairs and my husband is 5feet 9 inches and was and looked dwarfed because the chairs are too low and uncomfoortable. Am I or are we returning not in the near future we had no appetizers, no desserts, nor alcohol and we spent $115.00plus tip. I am not happy!!! OH YES ,I FORGOT PAPER NAPKINS. I have spent way more with less people and was happy. People this is ALLENTOWN, not Phila or N.Y. I wish you well and hope you take our critiques to heart we in Allentown are not hicks. You need not go to cooking school to know that we are not getting a good value with some class. We like class, class we should not have to pay for it's free. Our server was excellent and fun.

Celebrating my husband's birthday, and we feel we made a good choice. The salad bar was fresh and our server, Melissa, was super attentive and accommodating. We will definitely be back. Thank you!

Food was good with a fun atmosphere . I can't wait to try more of what's on the menu. The service is also good and it's a comfortable place to eat. Great location!

Local gem but food was just ok, ran out of specials way early and thought it was tacky to have paper napkins, cheap steak knives and no table linens for a place that serves a $31.00 steak? Has potential but needs work.

We were there on Mother's Day and had a disappointing experience. My wife and I each had the Prime Rib, which was overlooked. We each asked for a "medium" cut and both came out well-done. No pink center, just totally cooked with few juices. My 88 year old mother selected the "crab cake" which came out smashed over a bed of rock hard broccoli. She needed our steak knife in order to cut the broccoli into small enough bites to eat. Even the salad bar was disappointing. The bins were lacking items and no effort was there to refill them. We drove 3.5 hours from Delaware to visit my mom and my brother's family, and don't think we would return to this restaurant again.

Fantastic food and experience! Our server, Kaylee, was incredible and so knowledgeable about the menu. Her suggestions were right on! Get the Perch and the Salted Caramel cheesecake! Make yourself happy. We will definitely be back! Highly recommended the restaurant to anyone interested in eclectic menus and comfort food!!!!

5 Stars Well Deserved. What we ordered: Lobster Bisque Chesapeake Pierogis Chicken Carbonara Chicken Florentine Salad Bar The Bisque was the best I have ever had. Not too fishy and just the perfect flavor spectrum all around. I could have eaten a million more bowls. The 3 Pierogis were topped with crab meat, bacon, and onion straws. I'm not huge on bacon so I could have done without that but the crab and onion straws paired perfectly with the soft mashed potatoes inside the pierogi. Salad Bar was also great. Nothing crazy just the typical fixings but everything was very fresh. Salad Bars are harder to come by nowadays so I appreciate that they've kept that from the old shanty (which I've never had but I know they had - thanks to my grandparents) Chicken Carbonara was very thick and rich. Made it halfway through the dish before tapping out. All the right flavors though and for a pretty fair price around $20 I tried a bite of the Chicken Florentine my mom had and it was delicious. Spinach and tomatoes coupled perfectly in a much lighter sauce. EXCELLENT choice made for Mothers Day dinner. Service was quick and staff was extremely friendly, everything came out in the correct order with no rushing or much waiting in between, thanks Shanty!

Went to dinner on Sunday night. We were not impressed at all. They didn't have Lager on tap, they were out of black beans burgers. It took nearly an hour for our food to arrive. We were a party of 6 but there was almost nobody else there. The food itself was unremarkable and the service was mediocre. We won't be going back.

This was my second experience at the new version of The Shanty. I will say overall it was better than the first. The persistent fish smell in the restaurant is still there from the first visit and really takes away from an otherwise beautiful restaurant. We started at an outside patio table with 4 of us getting drinks while we waited for the rest of our 11-person party. Once we moved inside with our party the server brought us two separate bills for our drinks like we asked. I noticed that I was charged $13 for two Coronas and when I questioned the server to see if he mistakenly charged me for my brother and his friends mixed drinks his response was, "Well he was talking when I asked about splitting the bills, so I just split them evenly. Isn't he your brother anyway?" Instead of admitting his error and making a simple fix by canceling both checks and putting them through again correctly he just sort of walked away. Needless to say since I was over charged by $3 I did not tip. For our group we had a server named Nicole who was attentive, efficient, friendly, and personable. She took great care of our rowdy group and was on top of everything. The food was excellent! Aside from the poor service by our initial server it was a very good experience.

We came in late night to have a drink. As soon as we sat down we were informed that it was last call but the bartender still made me two perfectly mixed cocktails. Vic gave me a tour of the dining rooms and shared the history of the building. Friendly staff despite the late hour and desire to close. I will visit again when I'm in town and try to go earlier to try the food.

Gave this place a second chance. Big mistake. Was meeting a friend on a Friday night at 7:30. I was seated rather quickly and informed the hostess of who I was waiting for (she knew him personally). 10 minutes went by and my friend arrived (he found me himself). Another 15 minutes until any sever even acknowledged we existed and it wasn't even our server!!! 25 minutes!!!!!!! Totally inexcusable no matter how busy the place is. We ordered our drinks from the server who first approached us, they were delivered by a manager (I think??) along with an excuse blaming our actual server who came by and gave us another excuse blaming it on the hostess. We of course were ready to order in entirety since we had plenty of time to study the small and rather boring menu. Our sandwiches came out while we were still working on our appetizers. At least the entrees were "good". The place was packed (understandably on a Friday night) and LOUD!! Horrible acoustics! All in all ANOTHER BAD EXPERIENCE. Definitely NOT returning unless someone else is paying and I have nothing better to do cuz it's not worth my money or my time otherwise.

The Shanty is a continuous evolution in improvement. I know when it first opened their were some mixed reviews but I have seen a restaurant that listens to it its customers feedback and makes necessary adjustments. What more could you ask for? I have become a regular and there are many aspects that I love about this place. There burgers are AWESOME! The staff is friendly, engaging and very customer service oriented. The management takes great efforts to assure your experience is a positive one. I am a big fan of small plates so I love appetizers! They have implemented some fabulous happy hour specials that are great for a quick bite and cocktail after a day of work. I recommend you try this place and if you have before, come back again as you will be pleasantly surprised by the changes!

They want to be a fine dining establishment. The only thing that's remotely close to it being fine dining is their astronomically priced menu. The food is mediocre, and definitely not worth the price. The greens served with the entree was so bitter, I actually spat it out. Our bill was around 80 dollars for two adults (2 entrees and 4 house wines on "special") plus tip. I gave it two stars b/c the salad bar wasn't bad and the waitress was fine. My advice, this is not worth even trying once (nor trying if you use any promotional coupons they have advertised)!

Awesome Sunday Brunch! Just came from great brunch of smoked salmon. This is my second time here for their Sunday brunch and each time the I have had an awesome meal. The staff is very friendly and the Bloody Mary was excellent with bacon wrapped asparagus. The restaurant is charming and I am happy to see this great addition to the West End of Allentown. This will be a monthly treat for my wife and I!

This place has been remodeled and perfect place for dinner and drinks. Service is fast and courteous Food is very good and and reasonable priced. Just ask for James, their resident wine guy, and he can hook you up. Always friendly and great music on the weekends.

My wife & I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner. First impression: trendy decor, seemed clean, few patrons, noticable musty-fishy odor. The hostess seated us in the back even though the place was nearly empty. We were surprised to see paper napkins. We ordered 2 burgers, both well done. An eternity later, we were served 1 hockey puck & 1 raw burger. Not rare. Raw. I declined the servers offer to redo my raw burger because the 1st one took so long. My wife & I shared her burnt burger & fries. All the apologies didn't make up for the rookie mistakes. I will never eat here again.

    (1)
  • Rebecca S.

I would never go back here. Salad dressings are definitely NOT homemade (as signage suggests)...veggie burger was obviously microwaved---dirty wineglass (lipstick and everything).....and overpriced. Corny decor.

Liked the atmosphere and food we had. The scallops app was our favorite. I do think the menu is limited though especially the appetizers. It's a hang out scene so more sharing dishes are needed!! Good start though and hope you add to the menu soon. After a revisit a couple of times, I am dissapointed with this restaurant. It's over priced for what you get. The menu is pretty much the same limited menu, especially the appetizers. I did try the Chesapeake Pierogies. Strange combination. The problem is that the bacon totally overpowers the crab, which was limited at best. Think about it, how could you taste crab through the smokey flavor of bacon? You don't! The Pierogies were good, just not worth $12 because it simply tastes like traditional onions and butter preparation with bacon. Skip the bacon guys and put the crab on the inside with the potato/cheese then top it with carmelized onions and Old Bay. That would be "Chesapeake". With all the new competition in town, this place needs to get into the moderately priced realm. $6-10 Apps, $14-20 entree's. The caliber of food just does not warrant the bill at the end of the night.

The rolls and the lame butter in gold foil was just a small mistake. We were pleasantly surprise by the rest of our meal. Everything from the waitress ( Melissa?) , the appetizers, the drinks, the dinners were all beyond our expectations. We were even handed the remote control for the TV!! Drink were always full and service was quick and spot on. I'll say it again, the four of is were all pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate to eat here again or to recommend The Shanty to friends. Spring rolls. Chesapeake pierogis. Chesapeake chicken, chicken carbonara, cracker encrusted shrimp.

Not good. The salad bar is basic and set up horribly. Waitress was no where to be found and another waitress had to bring us water several times. For $75.00 you could do a lot better elsewhere.

Disappointing! With 6 to our table, we were over 1/2 the patrons after 1PM on Friday. I thought that we had just missed the lunch rush. I found out otherwise, it's the food quality. All burgers & fries ordeded, but 1. Kitchen timing needs work. Seriously, over 30 minutes to receive just 3 of the burgers. Then, another solid 5+ minutes to get the rest. With an open kitchen, I could see the buns being "toasted" a.k.a. 1/2 charred black for the last 3 sandwiches. They weren't started until after the first 3 were delivered. In that amount of time, I didn't think meat temperature would be an issue. When a customer verbally requests medium rare(a PINK Center) and receives an 1/8" of gray "sear?" with rare RED center, your temps aren't correct. Guess I'm lucky the charred bun warmed the rare meat a little. Ha-ha! With no guarantee how long a reorder would take, I mentioned the state of the burger to the waitstaff. Since we were the last 3 to receive our food, 35+ minutes after order placement, we declined the reorder. My mistake, within an hour I regretted not sending my burger back. If you know what I mean. If we return, it will be for music & spirits, only. Shanty's food deserves "0"'s.

  • Donna W.

Wow - what happened to the old Shanty? This place is nothing like it. Way overpriced food, tiny portions, and taste was marginal at best. When we showed the manager that the crab cake was smaller than the cucumber slice on the plate, he did add one more to the plate. Don't think we will be going back. Drinks were good though.

We walked in on a Saturday might and was seated immediately. We had a great server. I had French onion soup and my boyfriend had a burger. Everything was perfect and the price was good too. I like the set up and we will recommend the is restaurant to al, our friends
