Yachats is a little drinking town with with a tourist problem. It's not a bad tourist problem, I mean it's no Las Vegas or Disneyland. Hell it's not even Cannon Beach, but the local economy is basically tourism and beach weekends. That's a good thing really, because the alternatives are worse. I mean rather than hoisting a Rouge ale with Bob and Betty from Twin Falls, we could have the Koch Brothers and a Georgia-Pacific paper mill mowing down trees and pumping black death into the ground water. Or we could have a commercial zone with a bunch of big-box retailers and fast food joints strung out along the Pacific Coast Highway like the Bataan death march. No: I like our tourist problem just fine. Yachats is a paradigm stift. We are so used to one-hundred billion punch presses pounding out exact duplicates of what we think we need and want, that when faced with none of that, we get a little nervous - will I survive? Sameness is marketed as quality control - the same experience over and over and all is well. You can't buy a Big Mac in Yachats, but you can get a Sacred Cow reuben sandwich and the Green Salmon. There isn't a Red Lobster or Newport Bay, but you can get a bowl of Slumgullion at Luna Sea Fish House. There is no Lowe's or Home Depot, but there is a hardware store - Yachats Hardware. There's no Olive Garden, but Doug and Heidi make some pretty fine home made Italian food at Heidi's. There's no Starbucks - thank God! I'm a beach guy. I was fifteen in 1967 - the summer of love. Cream's Disraeli Gears, echoed through my warm southern California summer in monophonic, psychedelic, waves. It was the beginning of a new world order that has since retreated to a few scattered ashrams, neighborhoods and towns - a memory that's part of my DNA - like a dominant allele. After a lifetime working for the man, we were passing through Yachats looking for a little plot of land to live on - a place to smell the ocean and join the community. We dropped into the Drift Inn for some food. Inside, was the summer of love - gray, and softer around the middle, but carriers of that same dominant allele. We found a little postage stamp of land just a couple hundred feet from the 804 Trail and the surf pounding the rocky shoreline. We love our peaceful quiet town and the people who make it such a special place.

Yachats has long been my favorite Oregon Coast destination. There are some great beach rentals here, and you can find either sand or rock beaches, with a lovely seaside walking trail. Sadly, the recent troubles with the economy have closed several restaurants and gift shops in recent years. Still, there's a lot of ocean to see, and the people remain friendly and welcoming. Even though my favorite See Vue Inn was razed to build cottages that are now closed, I will keep coming back to this lovely little town.

Stayed in Yachats for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised. Yachats is a small little coastal town about 30 minutes south of Newport. The place is really cute and charming. Really the perfect place to go for some relaxing. It didn't seem like there was a ton going on here. They have several places to eat and a little strip of cute local shops. I don't even think they have a gas station (probably a bit annoying if you are a local). All the locals I encountered were so nice and welcoming. The beach was beautiful and I really enjoyed walking around and taking photos with my camera. I didn't stay out as long as I would have liked due to my fingers getting really cold and going numb. I guess that is to expect with a trip to the coast in December. I am going to attempt to make it back here in the summer so I can enjoy some more time out on the beach or on one of the outdoor patios overlooking the water.

If you prefer a slower paced, quieter town, you won't be disappointed, and be sure to catch a sunset. Beautiful beaches, beautiful sunsets, quiet and friendly.

The city of Yachats really is the Gem of the Oregon Coast! If you can brave the rain the sunny days make it worth while. The beaches are beautiful and clean. All the town folk are nice and friendly. I really like that there are no mainstream stores in this town. But there are plenty of dining options and a smallish grocery market if you need to pickup a few items. Being a California girl this small town is a nice break from the big city! So grab yourself a rain coat and go explore the Gem of the Oregon Coast!
