Interesting atmosphere, but the service was slow and the food was too salty.

I love Thai food. No you don't understand, if it were a person, I would marry it. I LOVE it! Give me a plate of (veggie/tofu) Pad Kee Mao, a bowl of Tom Yum Ka soup, a side of fried veggie spring rolls with peanut sauce, and a cold glass of (milk-less) Thai ice-tea , and I am a happy camper. Well i guess when i lived in downtown i got more than a bit spoiled, having 2 great Thai places within walking distance of my place. Since moving to the SW down by Tigard, i would still drive back into town, or the SE to get Thai. Little did I know that there was a hidden gem right down the road from me. At least 4 times a week i would head down Barber towards Tigard from SW Capitol Hwy, and pass by Thong Thai. Hidden in a little shopping center amidst a Plaid Pantry and a Radio Shack, it seemed liked just another Thai place, with mediocre food, lack-luster service, high prices, and a silly name (the 13 y.o. boy in me would giggle every time i saw the sign. Sad since i am a 27 y.o. woman...). Well a few weeks ago I was craving some Thai soup. I happen to live right up the road from another Thai place that i happened to try a few months back that was pretty blah. So i was really hoping to find a place nearby that would be as good as my usual places. I happened to be browsing Yelp for restaurants near me that delivered, and Thong Thai caught my eye. Not because they delivered mind you, but because i remembered the name from my immature mind. I decided to have a look at their sight, and read some reviews and got hopeful. But i did not hold my breath, or get my hopes TOO high. I have been hurt by bad Thai food in the past. A few days later, I was in the area with some friends, and we were trying to decide what to eat. I immediately suggested Thong Thai, being that i was still craving Thai food, and it was still fresh in my head. It was a Thursday, about 7 pm, and the place was dead. So i was a bit worried. That can't be good. But we should still try it. Let's be optimistic. Well let me just say this, Just because the place has a funny name in my eyes, and that the shopping center is less than appealing, and that it was dead when we went in, Give it a chance. Don't judge a book by its cover (or in this case name, location, neighbors) I got the Potato Yellow Curry with Tofu, and we as a table got an order of the Veggie Spring Rolls. Can't remember what my friends got, since i was too much in my own personal food-coma heaven. As we started eating, a bell went off in my brain, "DING DING, We have got a winner!". My food was great. The food was cooked perfectly, the tofu was cooked exactly right, the potatoes and carrots just cooked enough to be soft, but not dissolving. My 9 m.o. son even ate some and liked it! Truly, A diamond in the rough. You have my business Thong Thai. I promise not to laugh at your name any longer. Now about that soup...

Low price, fresh food, great friendly service.

Very good, very friendly service. The owner and staff are as nice as you can find. Lunches are fine for the price and good quality. I wasn't blown away by the food but I thought it was perfectly fine for the price. There are a lot of comments about dinner being expensive. I don't know about that but lunch is quite reasonable. I'll check dinner prices next time I visit. I'd suspect it's in line with most Thai restaurants.

Meh, the place is alright, family owned, and the gentleman who usually runs the place is kind as can be. It saddens me then that his food isn't as delicious as he is hospitable. Everything grilled or stir fried, including the ToFu in this meat eaters opinion, is a decent selection on the menu. The noodles, satays, stri fried rice, BBQ Chicken are all surprisingly good. Unfortunately equally surprising is how terrible, flat out terrible, the curry dishes are. If Green Curry is considered a national treasure of Thailand, which it is, then some of the old kings are rolling in their grave at the thought of eating this paste. My comments when the Green Curry arrived was "well at least it's green" because it was such an odd saturated forest green it didn't resemble any curry I had ever eaten. The taste could have been worse, but I was treated to the most bland tasting curry dish of my life. It made me wonder if I was perhaps eating food coloring or something besides a green curry paste it was so bland. Have you had corn flakes? Yep, it's about that bland. The veggies that accompany the dish feel like they've been tossed in a little undercooked. Like they were going to use them in Pad Kee Mao, but some idiot ordered curry. I would have them pegged at 3 stars, but there's no excuse for serving curries like these. They might as well strip them off the menu. Other things like their cucumber sauce for the satay is some of the best I've had in PDX. It's mind boogling. If you need a quick lunch, this is cheap, fast, relatively healthy and if you order anything but a curried dish you could add on a star to my review for good measure. Don't be tempted though, I did warn you. Heed the curry.

Can't give this place 4 stars anymore, they've been 4 starts too long. It's not just about the fact that they don't use any real crab but imitation yet charge $14. It's more than that. When you ask for basil, you get very little. I don't like that they charge dinner prices for weekend lunches. Yes I know other Thai places do this too (Typhoon I'm looking at you!), and don't your worry, it will reflect on their scores too across the board. But it's still lame. Lunchtime on a Monday is still lunchtime on a Saturday! Also, why are you charging extra for me to get a pork/chicken/beef combo when the *amount* of meat is the same as if I got just one pf those meats. Their all the same price on their own, not like it's shrimp. Yet now I am paying for shrimp prices for wanting a combo that other places offer without asking for it, it's on their menu. Anyway, their open on Sunday during the day so that's a plus, and their close to home, also a plus. So far Thai food tastes similar to me wherever I go, kinda odd I guess. So at this point I am looking for value. I did like Authentic Thai, huge ass portions, though their far from me, and don't open till dinner time on Sunday. Same problem with sushi, don't they realize we eat during the day on Sundays too!?!? Does Asian culture feel I should be fasting on Sundays!?!? Yeah, no thanks to that lol.
(3)Oliver W.
Satisfied with the food and the help is very nice! Makes a nice lunch break!
(5)Parker P.
What a mistake I made going here....my pad Thai was inedible and this place I noticed on my way after picking my to go order is ****Very Dirty!!! The door and walls around alone are terrible.....yuck!!!! If they can't even keep the dining area clean, I can't even imagine the kitchen.
(1)Joan F.
Really salty food. The veggies were crisp but the overall taste was meh. The pad Thai was disappointing and lacked flavor. The cashew chicken was lacking spice and personality. We won't be back.
(2)PJ P.
The worst pad thai there is to mankind. This place gives Thai food a bad name. I wouldn't recommend this place to any one. I can make better pad thai than this place.
(1)Tzaddi B.
Omg soooo good!!! Soooo much better than the two Thai restaurants closer to my house. I will gladly drive further for this place! Pumpkin Curry, Chicken Larb, Tom Kha soup ... DELICIOUS!!
(5)J H.
This is my go to Thai place. I went to Thailand a few years ago and my favorite dish was pumpkin curry. I was so excited to find it on their menu. It is awesome. I am always sorry when I don't get it. The green curry and the salad rolls are also excellent.
(5)John H.
This is our favorite Thai restaurant in Tigard. Their service is prompt and friendly, their food is excellent, and their prices are very reasonable.

This is a tasty little spot in a strip mall near 99W and 217. The place on the exterior is nothing fancy but the food is mighty tasty. I enjoy their salad rolls with peanut sauce as an appetizer. A light snack prior to lunch we split those. I had the ginger stir fry, which was oh so tasty. I had a Diet Pepsi. They have all their sodas in cans and we got into a spirited debate with the owner over Diet Coke vs Diet Pepsi and he wanted to know the difference. He said, some people when I tell them I only have Diet Pepsi will not order it. I said I'm normally that way but I decided to acquiesce. I suggested that since he was buying it in cans anyway, why not offer a variety. We'll see how it goes. All in all a decent place and decide prices. I'll be back again.

4.75 stars-almost 5 stars. I true gem to have in the area. Our go to spot for Thai. The best dish is the pumpkin Curry! It may or may not be on the menu but ask them about it. Service is super friendly and speedy. Prices can be a little high for this cuisine. This place might be a challenge to find if your not looking for it. It is in a strip mall next to radio shack not far from Cash and carry grocery and Aarons rental place. I also really love the Tom Yum soup and my cat is obsessed with their chicken satay so we always get an extra order for him. Wished they were open on Sundays but they no longer are. As of 11/2014 they now have updated their menu and have several new dishes. I tried their Khao Soi. It was good. It needed more broth but the restaurant is new to making this dish so I will give it some time. We go here pretty often and will return soon.
(4)Paige Z.
If you love crab puffs as much as I do, go here. They have fast service and soda in a can, which I prefer because it is not watered down. Staff is friendly.
(4)Linda F.
Did not like it at all. Very bland. Kinda pricey. Lots of places to eat around here. Pick another place. Seriously.
(1)Dalani S.
The restaurant is clean but empty. The food is fresh and decent, but could use additional seasoning or spice options. We may possibly come back but not go out of our way for a special trip.
(3)Cedric N.
Excellent Thai Restaurant! I have been coming here for over 7 years! The food is fresh and hot! The service is excellent! Most of all the price is anazing! I would recommend anyone who is in this area of town to come here and have a great luch or dinner!

Today was my second time ordering from this place. We pass it several times a week but we are so wary of trying new Thai places. Often times places that are reviewed well here in the NW, still don't live up to our Socal standards. Let's face it, when it comes to Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Socal is where it's at. But the NW is now where we are at so we make do! Anyway, the first time I ordered I asked for the dish to be extremely spicy. On their 1-5 scale, I asked for a 10, I assured them my husband could handle it and informed them that everywhere that we go asking for spicy food, it is NEVER hot. This was no exception. We brought the food home and my husband said it wasn't even slightly spicy. But we all agreed that the food was very good. We had the chicken satay which were nice thick pieces, marinated very well and with a super yummy peanut sauce for dipping. My husband had a noodle dish, I had the massaman curry. Today i went in to order and there was a lovely girl at the counter who I spent a good five minutes talking to solely about how hot I wanted the noodle dish. I told her I get that there is the more western perception of spicyness but that I wanted the Asian level of spiciness, a 10 plus, asian style, as hot as they could make it. My husband eats habanero's as snacks, he's Indian and has eaten spicy food since he was a little kid. She informed me that they do typically use American spices but they also have the Thai spices that produce a different heat. Of course! She added a little container of extra Thai spices on the side. It was probably a good tablespoon of dried spices. My husband added all of it to his dish and mixed it up and said it was the spiciest Thai he's had yet, and he loved it! Any place that can make delicious food and make it hot enough for my husband, gets five stars from me :) We also had the chicken satay again, the shrimp tempura, a duck dish, and tofu yakisoba noodles. Everything was excellent.

It has been difficult to find good Thai food since my favorite place closed. On a whim we stopped in after seeing several times (while visiting Baskin Robbins) :). I was pleasantly surprised! First, the customer service is great; Siree (sp?) is such a friendly guy. They are always so sweet when I have to make special requests due to my many allergies. You MUST try the Basil Fried Rice (it is spicy, but so delicious) and the Mango Paradise Chicken was amazing! The Lemon Grass Chicken is fantastic as well. Thong Thai is a pleasant surprise hidden in a strip of commercialism. Thank you!
(4)Brandon T.
I really enjoyed the pumpkin curry but then again it is Fall and I was in a seasonal dish mood. Would I have enjoyed it as much in the spring? Who knows? Wait...no, of course I would have! Also the salad rolls were pretty darn good but then again it is hard to mess those up. Overall Thong Thai is a go to shop for seemingly any and every thai dish. The interior is very classy, no something you'd expect from a place neighboring ATT and Radio Shack, and the service is very kind. If you are in the area then you might as well give this place a try because there really are not all that many other good options to choose from.
(4)Alex F.
We don't go out for Thai food much, and the places we've gone in Portland are all pretty much at the same level. But Thong Thai is close, convenient, inexpensive, friendly, and has pretty great food. The staff are attentive and friendly. They have great Satay and Curry dishes. It's casual; check it out.
(4)Penny F.
It was OK but i wouldn't go back. Not one person in the place and the food was edible but not good.
(2)Danielle F.
Thong Thai is conveniently located nearby to my home, but hadn't yet stopped in - however my husband and I were pleasantly surprised by how tasty and fresh our food was. We ordered food to go with a very friendly waitress and had to wait only a short while. The sweet and sour chicken was very good - the chopped vegetables tasted fresh, and the crab wantons were delicious! Definitely will be returning here

Pad Thai...comfort food. I was feeling slightly hung-over and exhausted from braving Washington Square the day after Christmas, thus I needed a little comfort. Hangover food should be a little on the heavy side, maybe a little greasy or oily. Sadly my hangover was not properly nurtured. My Pad Thai was rather on the dry side and was surprisingly lacking in flavour of any kind. My order came with a little pack of nearly flavourless peanut sauce and one slice of lime that did not even come close to moisturizing the abundance of noodles. The scallops were nice and juicy and I polished those off right away. But once those were gone I had little incentive to go near the unenticing pile of noodles before me. Come on, lure me in with some spice, some egg, and heck some moisturizing and tantalizing sauce. On the up side, the guy behind the counter that took my to-go order was super nice. He brought me water while I was waiting and even noticed how dehydrated I was (goes with hangover) and brought me more water. Alas, next time I am looking for a scrumptious Pad Thai, I will probably look elsewhere. As lovely as the service was, really the food only rates 2 stars as "I've experienced better."

Its only ok

One of my favorite things is GOOD pad thai. Unfortunately, it wasn't at that level. The coconut fried tofu was surprisingly flavorless. It was kind of expensive. Having the TV on and loud music in the back at the same time was driving me nuts. The chicken satay was good, but not as good as other places. They have homemade coconut ice cream, and it's pretty decent for the price. I will probably not return.

We stopped in here on a whim because I had grown tired of another Thai restaurant in Tigard. I'm so glad we did! The first thing I order at any unfamiliar Thai place is chicken satay and either a yellow or green curry. The satay was absolutely delicious, as was the peanut sauce that accompanied it, and the curry didn't disappoint either. The service was reasonably quick, extremely warm and very friendly, and even though it's situated in a bland-looking strip mall the restaurant feels cozy and welcoming. This is our new favorite local Thai place.

I met my husband for lunch and we decided to last minute swerve into Thong Thai. Service was great and food was quickly delivered. I just wish it tasted better. The compliementary soup, a version of Tom Yum Ka perhaps? was delicous and I found myself wishing I'd ordered a large bowl of that instead of the summer rolls. UGH..if there's one thing you've learned about me so far is that I hate iceberg stuffed salad rolls with vague amounts of noodles and veggies that screams 'we are ripping you off!' every time you bite into it. These are so cheap to make so why not give us OUR moneys worth? I tried to dress it up with the bland peanut sauce but it still wasn't happening. I ordered my go to yellow curry which turned out to be tasty but just not that flavorful, other than the super spicyness.( I'd requested a level 2). Oh well, it was a spontenous lunch stop so now we know. However, after typing this I'm craving that spicy soup. Maybe I will be back afterall.
(3)Kir S.
I stopped in today for my lunch break from work after having driven past it more than a handful of times when I lived in the sw portland area. Initially I was a bit put off due to it being in a small strip mall, however it was delicious. I have had my fair share of pad thai and ive recently branched out to trying Thai curries. I had the Thong thai special with avocados and shrimp, it was awesome! I had yet to try green curry, and due to my lunch break time constraints, I thought i was going to have to take a to-go box, but it was just TOO good to leave any behind. Def visit this hidden gem on highway 99!

I'm finding myself reviewing a lot of my regular lunch places today.... And this is one of them. It's a perfect place for a decent priced lunch. First of all, one of the waiters is so cute and sweet you just want to either squeeze him or wrap him up and take him home. Except, he's usually the only waiter and is always running around so that might be detrimental to this place. They have a big menu for lunch specials, about about $7 for your typical Thai fare. It always comes with a small cup of soup of the day, ranging from some yummy kind of coconut concoction to something spicy as heck. I'm a wimp in terms of spicyness so you probably shouldn't take that comment so seriously. I always get the Pad Thai, and while not the best, it's still pretty tasty. Otherwise, there's plenty of options on both the lunch and dinner menu. It's a pretty cute little, though typical, Thai place. If it's by your place of business or home, I'd suggest you give it a whirl.

The first dining expirience was grand, when the new owners had just taken over. They were eager to please and let you taste things before you ordered and brought out samples just before the check, so as to have a new fave lined up for next time. But since that then, I have been back twice and it never quite lived up to the first. The tastes were not as well put together and the service had gone downhill.
(2)Jesse N.
The fat kid approves! I went in, and held it to the usual standard: Good price, good quanity, good flavor. The price was as good as any other thai place, with an $8.50 or so average a plate. They however deliver a good amount more on the servings in comparison to other places, so I was pretty happy. The quality was as good if not better than my favorite jams, so I've got to give the place a good rating! Their sauces were good, and the spiciness was there, and it was accompanied with flavor! So many second rate thai places just spice the piss out of their food in the hopes of tricking simpler minds. The fat kid sees through it all though, but this place is trickery free! Then you get the whole multiplier factor for being the only good restaurant in the generica side of town (SW Portland/Tigard/Beaverton) and yep... it's a win! The only complaint is the decor is somewhat bland and thrown together. Also don't look up at those ceiling vents... they've probably never been dusted ever.
(5)Erica H.
We go to thong Thai on a regular basis. We have even made it a christmas eve tradition to get take out from this place! The food is great and the staff is amazingly friendly! Lunch is fast and cheap. Dinner is a little more pricy, but you get tons of food. I highly recommend the salad rolls, massaman curry, and of course pad Thai! All are fabulous!
(5)Cheryle R.
Stopped in here today as it was convenient to some other errands I had to run in the area and I was craving something spicy. I arrived just before lunch (11:15) and was warmly welcomed by the friendly waiter. I asked for a takeout menu and he offered me a seat at the counter (which I accepted) and some hot soup while I waited (which I politely declined). This being post-Christmas and all, I was in sort of a cheap mood and decided to order off their $5.50 lunch specials menu. Stir fried vegetables with chicken seemed like the perfect thing to order in the wake of too much rich holiday food. My order was handed to me promptly and with a smile. It took me awhile to finally eat it once I got home, but when I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh everything looked and at the small to moderate portion size. (Yes, I get grossed out by the huge portions served up at restaurants in our country). It worked out to about a cup of white rice and a cup of the mixed veggies/chicken, which is just right. Taste was on par with other Thai places. I appreciated the low grease factor and the fact that zucchini was one of the veggies. All in all, a pleasant experience and I'm jazzed I dropped my fiver here instead of on a five dollar footlong.
(4)Marty W.
Had the pad kee mao for lunch, and it was fantastic! Fresh onion, tomatoes, and broccoli really made this dish. Great price for lunch too at $6.50 it can't be beat. Service was good too! Not many complaints. Good, solid restaurant and i'll be back for lunch again!

Thong Thai - a classic par-for-the-course strip mall Thai food joint on SW Barbur Blvd near the 217 interchange serves up a glimmer of lunchtime diversity in the murky wasteland of sh***y suburban corporate food. An 84-item menu (and 26-item lunch menu) offers your standard thai foods for lunch and dinner, ranging from $5 to $15 (for the specials). Lunch dishes run in the $6.50 to $9.50 range and provide fairly generous servings. Longing for the good old days when I worked downtown and could get a hungry-man portion of thai food for $5 from any of the numerous nearby carts, I occasionally stop by this place for some quick Thai takeout. More often than not, my response is "mmmm.... meh". It's way better than Skippers, Subway or the Hi-Hat (greasy Chinese), but nothing like what Thai food can be. I will give it 3-stars for being better than it's surroundings, but if this place were next door to any downtown Thai place, it would be empty at lunch time. Today I ordered the Tom Kha Gai, which is guaranteed to be decent at about any Thai place, and decent it was here. Decent. not great, not bad, but worthy of consumption. Unfortunately, the lid was a bit loose, and when it tipped over in my car (I drive like a maniac), it spilled out into the plastic bag surrounding the container. So here I am driving wildly up the street with a thin plastic bag 1/2 full of scalding hot lemongrass soup hanging from one hand, the other hand alternating between the steering wheel and the stick shift, and lo and behold, it did not leak. I got all the way back to work with not even a single drop spilled in the car. So that's a major +1 for this place - they make strong plastic bags. Other than the bag, the soup was tasty enough. The chicken was a bit dry (yeah, dry chicken in soup... I know, that's a tough one). The broth was flavorful enough. Overall, though, it does not hold a candle to E-San's tom kha. I have also indulged in their phad thai, and have about the same amount of enthusiasm (or lack thereof), for it. All in all, I have the feeling that I will only be visiting this place about once every 2 or three months, when the memories are no longer fresh in my mind, and I need a break from my daily Lake O. New Seasons deli lunch.
(3)Mike K.
Food is always good, reasonably priced, and convenient location. Get some soup to go on the way home. The salad rolls are always delicious, their curries are well seasoned, the noodle dishes (pad thai or more adventurous stuff) are great, and the fried tofu app is fantastic with their peanut sauce. I've never had bad food here- I even took my finicky family here and they loved it.
(4)Laura G.
I am visiting from out of town, and was craving Thai. I thought it was decent quality food. The people were very friendly and that was great to see. I'm used to amazing Thai food in Los Angeles though, so I'm a bit biased. I had Prik King and some spring rolls. Was hoping for a coconut to drink but they didn't have any, which kinda disappointed me. Was also a bit pricey. Fantastic service, but I feel the food was a little too costly.
(3)David S.
My favorite dishes are the green currie dishes. They are light, healthy, and flavorful. Try the brown rice too. It is different than most, and very good.
(5)Leah S.
Really glad we found this place, I'd been pining for nearby good Thai food. Everything is really tasty, true to form, and served speedily. The staff is friendly and welcoming and it seems like they have a lot of regulars. I enjoyed listening to the managers chat with the regulars, asking about families and remembering orders. We'll be back!
(5)Samantha D.
I did not have the best experience here, but I do feel like this is a good restaurant. We ordered Tom Kha soup for the table and that was delicious. I ordered green curry tofu fir my entree (4/5 spice level) and I could eat it. I love spicy food. Breaking into a sweat sometime is not unusual, but when you cannot taste anything at all but pepper, what's the point. There wasn't any flavor. My friend got the same dish at a 3 and it wasn't very spicy but was very flavorful. Nobody at the table could palette the spice of the 4. My suggestion is to under shoot your desired spice. I've never not been able to eat a meal because it was too spicy but I guess this will be the first. It wasn't an issue really. I communicated this to the server and cook and they seemed eager to fix it, however, when they brought my meal back, it was just as spicy but stirred around. I asked him what he did to try to fix it, and the cook said he added a little coconut milk. I explained this didn't work and he seemed apathetic and disinterested. Luckily I just said that I no longer wanted it and they did not charge me. Communication is key! If I lived locally I'd give it another chance, but I'm just driving through. I hope you have better luck
(3)Mason P.
2 1/5 stars but I couldn't do that. I love thai food, but I found this place mosre pricey than it was worth. There just wasn't enough food for their prices compared to other restraunts in the area. Good, but high price and small quantity. The waiter was super nice though.
