Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

I used to like this place a lot but not so much. We are not going to go back unfortunately. Their sweet & sour chicken for pick-up order is always soggy because they drown the chicken pieces in their sweet & sour sauce, when they really should just serve the sauce in a separate container. Their fried rice is not even fried, it's steam rice and i don't like steam rice. Many times when we pick up our orders they always make mistakes and either forget an items, or give us something we did not order. They don't seem to double check. That really makes me furious especially when i find out they didn't give me what i asked and paid for and i am back home and it's too late to return it.

We ordered last night, dinner to-go. It was super easy! I just went to their website and ordered off there just like you would shop online. I really appreciated this option. I sent my husband out and he was back very quickly with our food. :) We ordered the chicken lo mein, fried shrimp, szechwan beef, bbq pork fried rice and steamed rice. It was all piping hot and fresh. I prefer to order my food to go from here, however I don't mind dining-in as I have never had a bad experience.

It's been years since we ate here. And it's still the same atmosphere with large portions (for dinner) for the price. The waitresses were really friendly, we invited friends and celebrated two birthdays born on the same date. One turning 79 and the other turning 35.

Okay, so the good things first. The service is great, very friendly staff instant service, and always with a smile. And now the bad. The food is just awful. It's bland. Lacking spice even when asking for extra spice, and very greasy. Even when you order a meal with veggies, they're greasy and seem once frozen or canned- not fresh. I've always thought this place was dirty, but I assumed that was just my mind because of how dated the location is. Well, last two times I came in there were little sugar ants all over the table. The first time, the lovely young lady said "oh my god gross!" And moved me to a different table. Last time I went, (forgetting about the ants last time) the table had a solid black lime from the seam in the wallpaper to the sugar. I pointed it out, the person this time just used an already dirty damp rag, cleaned some up (made them go ALL OVER the table) then asked if I was ready. I left. Won't be back again.

Tried for the first time and wasn't disappointed! Between the three of us, we had general tso's, house fried rice, shrimp and beef in oyster sauce. Tried them all and no complaints on any (except hot is definitely not hot!! :)). Will be back and add a little variety next time.

I went one time with my fiance and found their food to be lacking in every way. Over cooked my entire meal. The one saving grace was the General Tsao's Chicken. It was quite good. But it could have been spicier :(

I have been eating here for years

My husband and I always wondered about this place, it seems to be packed on weekends. One adventurous afternoon after a few hours of touring goodwills we stopped in. I ordered a combination plate with egg foo young, fried rice, and kung pao chicken, he ordered general tso's and fried rice and egg roll, and both of us got egg drop. I would say thank god for the egg drop being okay because the rest of my food was horrible. The egg was like a burnt hockey buck and tasted like dirt, this was sad because it it one of my favorite dishes. The gravy wasn't very good either. The rice was bland and flavorless, and the spicy kung pao was not spicy at all. My husband's general tso's was almost too sweet to eat. Thank goodness our waitress erin was wonderful. I couldn't tell her how horrible it was since she has nothing to do with the food. We didn't eat it or take it with us, it had too much sugar for me to consider giving it to my dog even. It was for lack of a better work....yucky. I won't be going back.

The food here is very greasy. I would not come here again. There are better alternatives in this town.

It was ok food we didn't care for the fried rice and the bbq pork was cold when I asked them to fix it they went and put it in the microwave which made it dry. Now we have dry hot bbq pork. On a good note the broccoli and chicken was good with good flavor.

Always great service & friendly staff! Food is always hot & fresh! And love that the meals come with egg drop soup. I love coming here with my family.

When I lived in Salem, this was my "go-to" Chinese restaurant. It's been around forever and for a good reason: they consistently deliver piping hot, delicious fare. We came here so often that the waitresses knew our order! The other reviews mentioned that the food is "Americanized"...so be it! To me, it's comforting, Chinese soul food and bless them for that. They use fresh ingredients including all white chicken meat. Their fried rice is still the best I've eaten. I was so happy to see that my favorite combination dish, #6, was still on the menu. It includes "parchment chicken" which is a wonderful treat. Sure, the décor is a bit kitschy and their location isn't chichi, but they aren't trying to be. It's working-class and proud of it. Lum-Yuen serves up quality and quantity. The waitresses have always been friendly and professional. When I am in town again, I'm making a beeline to Lum-Yuen and ordering my combination #6.

Kind of a ghetto place in the middle of Portland Rd. Only been here a few times and while it was not neccessarily bad it was not all that great either. Last time I ate their they left my egg rolls and a whole meal out of my bag (carry out) and I did not notice till I got home and honestly I was too tired to care, so me and my friends just split up what we had and it was enough to fill us but if someone was visiting from out of town or even across town and wanted me to take them to Chinese, if I liked them, I would not probably take them here.

Very Americanized Chinese food. Found it to be pretty bland and the menu is somewhat odd & limited. The lunch specials are pretty cheap but this is just below even mediocre Chinese. Not that it's an absolute requirement of good Chinese restaurants but I saw only caucasian employees. I will say the staff was very friendly and attentive.

We tried Lum Yuen first time customers and found it to be yummy with huge portions! Ordered crab puffs, fried rice, special chow mein, shrimp chow yuk and Szechuan chicken. Service was friendly and food was tasty. I posted my pic.

Although my mom loves this restaurant, the lunch plate I ordered didn't taste very good. Sorry, mom, but I thought it was downright awful. I grew up in Hawaii where Chinese food, even Chinese-American food, is much closer to authentic. The standard for Asian food is pretty high with the huge Asian communities that call Hawaii home so my review can't help but be based on a comparison to all the many Chinese meals I've been fortunate to have enjoyed at (at least) 30 Chinese restaurants, both hole-in-the-wall, Chinese-American, as well as high end authentic Chinese restaurants. Although the server was fantastic, quick, friendly, and provided iced water and hot tea along with being cheerful and quick, the food was pretty bad. The pork fried rice was awful, both the flavor, texture, and it's lack of ingredients. It appeared to be seasoned with soy sauce and something sweet, with no meat or vegetables in it except for a tablespoon of sliced ham or cold cut meat that was placed atop the rice. I swear to you I can make pork fried rice that is 100% better, and I am no culinary wonder. They should start with a base of chopped onion at the very least. I don't like it but I understand the batter fried chicken and shrimp in sweet red sauce which would have greater appeal to non-Asian palates. However, the chicken chow mein was so foreign looking that when it was placed in front of me, I asked my mom what it was! I really thought i had been given the wrong item. Where was my mein?? There was a layer of dried, deep fried noodles that looked identical to La Choy's crispy noodles, topped with stir fry vegetables in a mild tasting sauce. The veggies and sauce were okay but when I order mein, which means noodles in Chinese, I really was expecting fresh, not crunchy deep fried or possibly canned, noodles. Very sad face. I'll give Lum Yuen another try and order completely different items and hope for the best and maybe be able to update this review. I feel a little more educated about Chinese fare in Salem. Maybe this is the norm here and I'll grow to like it? Nope, don't think so but at least not be bitterly disappointed? At least the server was very friendly, cheerful, helpful, and she made my visit there quite pleasant. Thank you for great service!

Very friendly staff, even after my 9 month old makes a complete mess all over the floor! This place is great during for their lunch specials! I usually get the Friday special which is pork fried rice, diced almond chicken, and friend shrimp for $5.95! good deal since I always leave with a box. :)

I worked at Lum Yuen as a busboy over 20 years ago and they still remember who I am when I go there for lunch or dinner since they are so close to where I live. They felt like a small group of friends that always remember your name. Just as I remember when I was young, their service is consistent and the food always comes out quickly and hot, while being decently priced. I tend to get the Sweet and Sour Chicken with double Pork Fried Rice (although I do enjoy the diced almond chicken the meal comes with, it makes terrible leftovers.) I've tried nearly everything on their menu and most is really good. Stay away from the fried shrimp because of the over-breading. Overall, there is nothing too spectacular about Lum Yuen, but nothing that makes it a place to avoid. The food is great, they make custom orders, the staff is always friendly and the place is relatively clean. They recently did some renovations and put in some new kitchen equipment. They were closed for a couple of days and my life was a little sadder because of it. But the changes they made were worth it.

I had a wonderful lunch again here today. They have new carpets, new chairs, re-stained and resurfaced the tables but same old friendly staff. The food is still iffy depending on what you order but for the most part its pretty good. The egg drop soup is the best in town now that The Dragon is no longer in business (switched owners). My only critique is that you shouldn't get the sweet and sour chicken because the sauce is hot but the chicken is cold in the center. Plus I tried substituting shrimp for one item and they wanted to charge me 5.00 sub fee.

My husband and I were looking for "Chinese" food without having to leave the house. Sadly we live in a North Salem food desert where no one delivers. So we settled on Lum Yuen, which is only a couple minutes' drive from us. I will say this for them: They were very helpful and easy to understand on the phone, which you don't always get from Chinese restaurants. I ordered my old standby, sweet and sour chicken, and my husband ordered his, Szechuan crispy beef. The beef wasn't bad. I'd call it slightly above average for that dish. No veggies, though. More on that in a minute. The sweet and sour was awful. The chicken was Salty with a capital S. I don't know if they accidentally knocked the salt shaker into the batter or what. Couple that with a sauce that was one-note (all sweet, no sour--basically corn syrup and red food coloring), and the combined result was borderline inedible. I feel bad describing something as both overwhelmingly salty and utterly bland, but there you go. And I usually love Americanized Chinese food. I've noticed that the Chinese places in Salem don't include veggies with any of their fried dishes. Is that a Northwest thing? Everywhere else I've lived in the U.S. (east of the Rockies) puts some combination of bell pepper, onion, carrot and pineapple into sweet and sour dishes. We'll keep trying new places, but for now I have to declare Panda Express the best Chinese food in Salem. How sad.

Wow, I cannot believe this place gets positive ratings. I was the cause of the Stateman Journal review from earlier- statesmanjournal.com/art… From my recollection, this place served food that was not good at all! My Vietnamese wife and myself vowed we would never eat here again. Although I cannot blame the many who line up to eat at this place. They serve exactly what Americans want- loads of ill prepared food, lots of deep fried stuff, and nothing that represents real Chinese food. OK, It is a Chinese- American restaurant, but that does not let them off the hook with me on the quality of their food. Save yourself some money folks, instead of eating here go get some canned LaChoy Chinese food and prepare it at home. You will hardly notice the difference.

They try to trick you into forgetting the poor food by giving you huge portions. You didn't fool me

Being that I'm Chinese, a restaurant that labels itself Chinese-American and has a menu that has American Food options like hamburgers, fries, fish & chips... usually frightens me. But I was hungry and in Salem, so I decided to give it a try. The service was excellent for a typical Chinese restaurant and the place was clean. I looked at the menu for quite some time, not knowing what to order. I'm not a fan of deep fried meat, tossed in sticky sauce (which is typical for most Chinese-American restaurants). I asked the server for suggestions and she told me to order the Shrimp Chow Yuk (Shrimp cooked with assorted vegetables). It was mostly healthy and delicious. Overall, my experience there was good - I'll have to try some other dishes next time.

Finally, Lum Yuen in Salem has a website. I was pretty excited so I though that I would bring it to Yelp. You can visit their new website at lumyuensalem.com .

Ended up here waiting for a concert and while it wasn't the best, it wasn't the worst. Except my buddy ate from the American food menu, and the mashed potatoes were awful. Instant. Watery. So be warned. Mongolian beef and sesame chicken from the traditional Chinese menu were both very good.

I guess it all depends on your taste, like any restaurant. For me, it was just OK. The service was awesome, fast and friendly. It was the food that was just OK. The atmosphere was good, with a booth that was pretty private. But since this place is a bit of a drive for us, we probably won't be back. I liked the food, for the most part, just was so similar to all the other Chinese food around Salem. I'd rather go somewhere closer to home.

Where is the 10 STAR option? This place is good. Think about it. It is located not centralized but yet the parking is super full of cars. At least 40 cars! If it wasnt good, no one would drive here! Hot and sour soup... so GOOD
