My family's favorite place to eat!! Love the street Tacos and only $1.49 each (Awesome deal)! Love the Downtown Taco... Cost a little more, but worth it... they grill cheese on the outside of the taco... Yum! Love the family that owns the restaurant... They are always so welcoming and attentive! Great Horchata too with free refills!

So the first time I went here it was disappointing. I missed La Perla. The oil used was off. But now, this is one of my favorite downtown Mexican restaurant. A few months later, my assistant was eating some delicious smelling enchiladas. I was surprised that the enchilada's came from here, so she convinced me to try this place again. OMG! They were so good. Now I am pregnant and crave pork tacos. Oh dear lordy, they have the most awesome grilled carnitas tacos and I can order them separately instead of with the combo. That along with Horchata is freaking divine. This pregnant lady is happy!!!! Oh and the verde sauce is AWESOME!!! Oh and the wait staff is so nice and jolly. I came at an off time when they were having their lunch and someone took the time to take my order and serve me. It makes me happy to see the people who work here be happy.

$8.99 entrees that rival $15.99 selections at other Mexican restaurants, La Tolteca was a tasty find that wasnt too pricey. Located in a converted Opera House, the dining area shares space above a hat store and a homemade bar soap establishment. Unique and charming to say the least. The chips: freshly crisp and tasty, but the salsa was a bit watery for my taste. The entrees were terrific, from the crema chicken, to the carne asada and pollo asado. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, the pollo asado is a highlight for chicken lovers. Our server was polite and attentive, and the service overall was speedy and pleasant. If ever in Salem again, I would definitely return.

Food was not bad. We did Tuesday taco lunch. 5.99. Good price. Needs flavor And salsa needs work. None of their sauce was good. I would love to show them. But two people ate with drinks for 20 bucks. Not bad at all. Id go back but not my first choice in walking distance!

Taco Tuesday was really good. 4 street tacos (yes that's a good thing) and a drink for $5.99 going back next Tuesday too. My wife loved the enchiladas. Says they're just like grandma Sarah used to make. Oh and Chorizo breakfast last sat was great. Finally were from So Cal and i miss El pollo loco and this place does that pretty good. Chili Verde is outstanding too !!

I feel sorry for Miss Fawn who really doesn't know what mexican food is all about! You should go to mexico to get a taste of what real mexican food is spose to taste like! Taco bell, Dell Taco, Taco time is not mexican food! Your use to pace salsa or tostitos salsa or tabasco! If thats the salsa you were expecting to try sorry La Tolteca only offers freshly made salsa out of real vegetables and chilies not processed or canned no conservatives made every morning from scratch! Grandmas recipe!! So if u want some fake mexican salsa just bring your own pace bottled "mexican salsa" to enjoy those delicious tacos that only La Tolteca has ;)

You know, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Food's inexpensive and delicious. I'm especially fond of the complimentary salsa. Food to fit every budget and appetite- the chicken tacos are my personal favorite. Good service.

This place is great. I work downtown and get lunch here at least twice a week. The Pollo Asado is huge and delicious. The owners are very nice. There breakfast is delicious and a great deal. Try the wet breakfast burrito, super tasty.

Oh my goodness. Best fish tacos I have ever had. I started the plate off with a bite of the rice. It was cold, not fresh. I was a little disappointed. But the beans were beautifully seasoned. Then magic happened. I took a bite out of the fish taco, and the whole plate because 5 stars. Delicious. If you are looking for a cheap, but great quality lunch... Check out La Tolteca!

If you like regular old northern style Mexican food this is a good place to go in Salem, great enchiladas, good sopes, great chile verde, reasonable prices, and sauceless tamales which pale in comparison to those served off of the menu at the stet and 19th st. muchas gracias, hey you can't have everything! And the tamal was only two bucks a la carte so I can't judge it too much, it had good chicken in it. Cheers

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
