There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in the Salem area and this one just didn't stand out. Service was friendly and good. Free chips and salsa were good. Fajitas were just so-so. Not a lot of flavor and much more veggies than meat. Their flour tortillas are not bad but not as good as La Hacienda Real's.

Very sad news. Carlos Placencia, owner of Guadalajara Grill, was tragically killed in a traffic accident last Tuesday night. Heartfelt condolences to the Family.

I went there for lunch last week and was blown away! The service was excellent and the food was super tasty and not greasy at all! I got the lunch special that day (not sure if it changes) it was a enchilada and taco with rice and beans for only $5! You have a choice between picadillo (shredded beef) or chicken. I got the picadillo for both...YUMO!!! I will definitely go back here again over and over! I have a new favorite Mexican restaurant!!!

I used to love this place, but something went wrong. Last time I order Mojarra Frita it was "off" tasting. I couldn't tell if the fish was old or if it was bad fish, so I didn't eat any more of it. Also, there was hardly anyone there and service took FOREVER.

Not sure how I slipped on this one. I've been coming here for years. This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Salem. Miguel has always treated us like long good friends and the waitresses are always great. The food is also very good. Lol. Anyway. I'm sure we'll be coming here way into our oldie days and enjoying it then as well

Delicious!! I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa. Their chips were good, salsa excellent! I had the camarones a la diabla. What a treat! Very fresh, spicy but not too much so. Service was excellent! This is so much better than the Mexican restaurant across the street. We will definitely go back! Con: the margarita was so big I couldn't finish it.... Is that really a con??? Just sayin.

We loved this restaurant. Been to many Mexican restaurants but this was definitely one of the better ones we been to. The chips and dip was very good. Also liked the flour tortilla, tostada and Chile relleno. To top it off our waitress was friendly and very attentive. All in all a very enjoyable meal.

first let's say I saw a very negative review about this place, let's just say I don't trust any reviews that has a stuffed animal as their monocle. stand up and show up for what you really are. with that said my wife really enjoys his place and its her go to place. she enjoys eating in the bar ,the staff have always been very friendly and accommodating. the food is really good. there's certain degrees of Mexican food, I think it's very hard especially here in Salem to find authentic Mexican food that hasn't been changed around a little bit to accommodate American taste. considering the fact that in our area of this probably 40 to 50 different Mexican restaurants. this restaurant fully try to accommodate everyone's taste. if you let the waiter know what you're looking for in one of their particular dishes and try to accommodate it in a more true Mexican food. let's face it this is Salem Oregon not Guadalajara Mexico. they tried very hard to do what they do. the tamales and enchiladas that were serve me are homemade. try this place out and make your own decisions about the food. that stuffed animal on a false face don't do it for me. I have written some very critical reviews for certain things but my face and my name or behind it.

Pretty standard for a Mexican restaurant...good food, fast service, and servers that mostly speak Spanish. Food was good, margaritas good but a little weak. Prices good.

I'm giving Guadalajara Grill 5 Stars (Yelp says, "Woohoo! As good as it gets!) -- not because it's the best Mexican food I've ever had -- but because it's the best Mex I've had since moving to the NW .... nearly 10 months ago. And frankly -- their guacamole is up there in the 5-star range regardless of location. It was truly yumderful. My taste buds did a little dance with every bite. The rest of the meal was wonderful too. I'm beginning to get accustomed to the names of things being slightly different from Tex-Mex and Santa Fe-Mex and SWMex.... In Texas, picadillo is a finely shredded, highly seasoned beef that's stewed for hours with pinola and spices and aromatics... Picadillo here at Guadalajara Grill is more like highly seasoned and partially shredded beef brisket! Sort of like Mexican BBQ brisket seasoned liberally with red chili powder and a full complement of spices! And it is terrific! Lean, supef-flavorful beef (I had it on their Mexican Pizza found in the appetizer menu) Overall, the "pizza" was excellent -- a crispy flour tortilla topped with a very-thin layer of refried beans, then topped with chopped tomatoes, green onion bits, picadillo and jack cheese -- then finished off after baking with a dollop each of sour cream and guacamole. Dear husband had his fave chicken quesadilla -- which he devoured and raved about considerably. Be forewarned that the Mexican Pizza appetizer is probably meant to appetize about 8 peaple -- because even going in hungry, I had a full take-home box of leftovers. This is, by far, the best Mex I've had in ages -- It's not hipster cool or raw vegan sustainable-chow on its labeling or anything -- but it is as close to Mex comfort food as I could want. We will be back.

By far one of the worst Mexican food restaurants I've ever eaten at today along with the poor service I received from my waitress. I ordered the green Verde burrito and my son had the cheese enchilada plate. Let's just start with the refried beans and rice, how can the Mexican food restaurant not get refried beans and rice right and still consider themselves a Mexican restaurant? The beans must've been full of lard and the rice that was served probably had sat in a bin for all day before we were served it. The Burrito and the cheese enchilada came saturated in oily greasy fat and the chili Verde sauce was so overly salty I'm not sure how anyone could've eaten that and considered it good. The pork was alright if you could remove every bit of chili Verde sauce that soaked it. I finally asked for just some plain tortillas and butter because I decided that both me and my son would not even come near to finishing or even wanting to eat more than three bites of a meal that we were served.... So what came were tortillas and this most disgusting looking yellow stuff called butter that they served. What is really sad is that when I looked around it seemed that there were families in there that most likely is their Mexican food restaurant of choice, coming from California I cannot believe how sorry they are mistaken that this is anything but horrible Mexican food. Street carts in Los Angeles do better tacos then. Salem has barely a handful of restaurants I would consider top tolerable for the size town that it is.

Ooooh.. place reminded me of the good ol' mexican places in the midwest (small town, hole in the wall places, with looong menus and great tasting food), sort of wish portland had a few more of these! Stopped at this place in Salem, on the way to climbing South Sister over the weekend. Its a nice lively place with separate bar and dinner seating. Service is very prompt and friendly, and they keep a stream of chips and salsa coming all night long (complimentary!). Their menu is like a book, seriously really long, and i read all of it, took me a good 10 minutes. The descriptions are deliciously written with some very nice pictures to accompany them. They have an extensive sea food menu which is awesome!! I got the Molcajetes (under their new dishes section) buried somewhere in the middle of their extensive menu. Boy was it tasty and a lot of food for the price. Was the perfect feast to prepare us for the gruelling hike that was in front of us. Saw other diners getting some very tasty looking margharitas, sadly we couldn't as we had a long drive ahead.. definitely going to stop here again whenever I'm headed to Central Oregon again.

Love this place! Huge portions, very reasonably priced. They have an excellent 3$ happy hour margarita! Not too sour. Would recommend sharing an entree with some guacamole dip! The staff is friendly and fast. Would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some good Mexican in OR

The portions for the price are huge at this restaurant and the food is very flavorful and filling. Our waitress kept our chips and bean dipped stocked and the drink I ordered was huge and very tasty! The ingredients were fresh, the service was efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere was pleasant and cozy. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for some BOMB and tasty Mexican food!!

Best Mex in the NW!! Coming from San Diego I was thrilled to find this little gem of delicious flavor!! Usually I find one item and stick to it but their food is so incredible I am really branching out and trying lots of new things. Every item has been a flavor sucess!! The service is equal to the menu as well. Evey server has been friendly and professional... each request met in a timely manner... drinks are kept filled and smiles overflow!!!

Best grilled chicken salad I ever had... Really good beans and the chips and salsa to die for.

Me and my husband eat here when we are wanting some Mexican food. It is pretty good for Oregon. We moved here over a year ago from New Mexico so We are kind of Mexican food snobs. Nothing compares to the food in the 505. But this place has pretty good food and salsa. Need salt but the service is decent most days. Drinks in the bar are awesome..... If you want an adult cocktail! I prefer to eat in there the service is better too.

We didn't have food here, just drinks & chips... So, I'd give this five stars if the bartender chic wasn't A) as short/rude with our group and B) wasn't making out with a guy at the bar... Hello!? Lol buuuut our tortilla chips were served hot! Our margaritas (I had a sip from my friends'), were all super yummy. I'm pretty picky about having too weak or too strong of a drink and these were perfect, so props to u make-out-session, rude chic... U DO know how to make a a good drink. :) I would go back of La Hacienda Real wasn't here. :-)

THE best Happy Hour value in town. The nachos are enough food for two, and the drinks are good and inexpensive. We come here at least once a month on Friday afternoon. The service is attentive. We have tried all the other Mexican places in South Salem, and this is by far the best. In regard to their dinners, I recommend the shrimp and mushroom platter.

Top notch! This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Salem. The service is superb, the prices are great, and the food is awesome. Their margaritas are delicious. I love it here!

Best Mexican lunch in Salem! I've never been for dinner, but we meet up frequently with friends for the $5 lunch specials. When they say any enchiladas on their $5 enchilada lunch platter? They mean it. No dicking around with "special items not included" - I've gotten chile colorado, cheese & onion, chicken mole, crab...anything they've had to put in enchiladas, you can have on the $5 lunch deal. The staff has always been friendly, and we are regulars enough that they always take us right to our favourite window booth.

A great dining experience. Very fresh & flavorful food. Bright cheery decor and friendly, beautiful staff. I ordered the tour de Guadalajara appetizer & the carne asado burrito. Enough food for 3 people (leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow!) The steak in the burrito has the most wonderful chargrilled flavor (ask for the salsa de diablo if you like it a little spicy.) An awesome spicy/smoky salsa to top your burrito.

We were referred to the best Mexican restaurant in Salem which was not Guadalajara we did not like the referral restaurant. Guadalajara's food is very good. I really like Mexican seafood and they have some of the best fish/shrimp dishes I've had in a long time. Pretty good salsa and chips, friendly waitstaff and open late - I think until midnight. I don't drink but they have $3 happy hour Margaritas! Everyone I was with thought the Margaritas were great.

  • Kimberly S.

Come ready to eat! Portions are LARGE, super delicious, and nicely priced. The margaritas can practically be shared and you could still get a buzz. They serve a refried bean dip with their chips, in addition to the salsa - very tasty! I had the appetizer Quesadilla Guadalajara and it was 8 slices instead of the usual 4. Definitely a place to try!

I eat here so often that I've just decided to randomly order items I have never tried before. Last week's choice was the Flautas with beef. Man, am I glad I've decided to branch out and try new things here. The Flautas were really, really good. Fried to golden brown perfection, tender, juicy shredded beef inside. Very flavorful and spiced just right. The guacamole and side order of flour tortillas were wonderful, as usual. Absolutely no complaints!

I am a regular at this place and have always been happy with the food and margaritas! Recently they hired a new waitress/bartender who is awful! She always has an attitude and just gives bad service in general. If that wasn't enough, I watched her one night make 2 drinks, walk out from the back of the bar carrying them, TAKE A DRINK OUT OF THE STRAW of both of them, and then SERVE THEM to customers! I couldn't believe my eyes! To see her drink out of the straws of both drinks and then serve them to customers was outrageous! I called the owner, and all he said was that he'd talk to her. This was over a month ago, and she is still there working! Beware of the blonde waitress/bartender, she may be drinking your drinks before you get them!

We hadn't eaten at this restaurant in years, and thought we'd try it on Saturday night. We ordered the Macho Burrito and the Chile Verde. We ordered it to go. Not only were both dishes extremely "sweet" the chicken in the burrito was so stringy it was hard to eat. If that wasn't bad enough they charged our debit card twice. After calling today, I was told that they have had this issue with the cards being charged twice. My advice was to 'give it a few days to see if it fixed itself'. I called my bank and they stopped the payment and will now have to find out if I need to open a dispute. Just wanted to suggest you check your statements after eating here.

I've eaten here quite a few times now and have gotten consistently good service and good food. The price is not bad either especially since they give you so much food. I really like their guacamole too, it's hard to find a place that has really great guac. Their enchiladas are the best I've had in Salem. The atmosphere is really nice too. It's not noisy and the lighting is perfect.

This is the best Mexican food I have had I very long time! Everything tastes authentic and homemade and I will be back to eat again! Also, the staff were very friendly and nice and the whole experience was a pleasure :)

Been here before and had a good experience but today was quite the opposite. Poor service or at least the lack there of, barely saw the girl serving me. And the food was bland and boring. Kind of disappointing. Really hoping this was a one time deal.

I used to think this place stood out from the pack just a bit, because it had some special dishes that were pretty good (esp. the seafood). Unfortunately, over time (we've been going here on and off for at least 8 years), it seems like the quality has declined slowly and steadily, while prices have done the opposite. To be fair, most entrees give you a lot of food, so I guess the value isn't bad as long as you are either starving, or will take home some food for lunch the next day. But quantity is not quality... the last time I ate here, I had pork sopitos. There was so much shredded lettuce on the plate I couldn't even see the sopitos, and once I uncovered them, I found big chunks of bland pork. My partner had the tacos pastor. We both thought our dishes lacked seasoning and flavor, and that's often a problem here. On the plus side, parking is easy, service is usually good and the decor is colorful, they've got good Margaritas, and the place isn't usually too crowded or noisy (although we only have been here on weekday evenings). Bottom line: Salem has a lot of interchangeable Mexican restaurants, and this place is one of them; there's no reason to come here unless it's closer to you than any other Mexican place, and you want to eat Mexican food or have a Margarita.

Food was good, but had to wait ten plus minutes to order and then another ten plus minutes to get the bill. It was on a monday night and there were only maybe 6 other tables. I didn't see the reason for taking so long. And I had to get my own boxes for my left overs. Not cool!!!

DELICIOUS, DELICIOUS and did I mention DELICIOUS !!!!!! Great food, great service and generous portions all at a great price !!!! Best Mexican food in the Valley, bar none !!!! Guadalajara Grill is by far the BEST Mexican restaurant in all of Oregon. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes and their portions are generous. The food is fresh, flavorful and they really know how to spice a dish. Their menu prices are decent and the service is always wonderful. All of their servers and other staff are a delight! I have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. I highly recommend this restaurant.

It's ok for Northwest Mexican food but it's definitely not the worst I've had in Salem either. I tend to like more spice but the ground beef had decent flavor. The heat was most definitely not there. Service was good and I did like the margarita.

I really like Guadalajara Grill. My boyfriend and myself have been there twice and enjoyed the service, portion sizes, and prices. We now have a regular server and he does a fantastic job, with a bit of humor on the side. When we go out we like to joke around with the employees (as we too work in a restaurant) and we had plenty of entertainment at Guadalajara. The food is very tasty, the asado burrito is especially enormous and totally worth the price. I would suggest going here for great Mexican food and pleasant service.

By far the BEST mexican restaurant ever in Salem!!! The service is superb but the food and the drinks are first class!! My husband and I have tried other places but nothing compares to Guadalajara!!

  • Angel H.

Came here with my girlfriends for a dinner and drink. The service was superb. The chips and salsa/beans were yummy. I ordered Arroz Con Pollo. I found it to be just OK. It was not real hot, and the sauce tasted like it was canned. The chicken was kinda rubbery. I got a bad stomachache ache later. I also though their prices were WAY too high. My bill was $25 for one dinner and ONE drink!! (Price does include my tip). I think I will save my money next time for La Hacienda Real. I get more food for less money and no stomachaches.

A good start with chips & salsa, along with bean dip. Portions are very generous, so we shared a fish taco platter. Good, but I do prefer cabbage instead of the iceberg lettuce served. Overall a god meal with very good service.

Guadalajara Grill is not the best Mexican food I've had, but it probably is my favorite in Salem. The food is consistently good and the service is usually very good. I have tried many items on the menu and have never left thinking I wouldn't order the same thing again. The Super Nachos are always good, as is the Carnitas Special. The staff is really friendly and always remembers us when we visit.

Guadalajara is our favorite south Salem restaurant, and has a wonderful attentive staff to make our dining experience outstanding. We are always more than satisfied with the variety of dishes and great flavors of the food, not just "hot: but deliciously spiced, fresh and very flavorful, which seems lacking in my opinion in other local Mexican restaurants.. So many dishes but of course a few favorites that are a little on the spicy side - Pollo Loco (lots of great veggies with chicken and a spicy diablo sauce), Tacos Al Pastor (delicious pork and just a dash of cinnamon), Chili Verde, Tacos Al Carbon, among a few. Fish tacos are an authentic option on their happy hour menu, in addition to that much needed margarita or two, and specials run all week. Some really good lower cal dishes too for those watching the calories. I am impressed with the owner as he advertises daily lunch specials on FB in addition to some coupons.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
